he_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o neglect_v they_o he_o think_v under_o a_o notion_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v save_v by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o he_o neglect_v follow_v hard_o after_o his_o own_o righteousness_n brethren_n this_o be_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v when_o he_o convince_v a_o soul_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o our_o plant_n and_o water_v may_v be_v bless_v for_o those_o end_n for_o which_o god_n have_v appoint_v it_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v this_o that_o without_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o word_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n work_v to_o make_v the_o gospel_n effectual_a and_o operative_a for_o the_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n of_o soul_n 3._o in_o a_o word_n that_o as_o the_o preach_a of_o the_o gospel_n of_o itself_o can_v convert_v or_o save_v any_o soul_n so_o neither_o will_v the_o holy_a ghost_n without_o the_o concurrence_n and_o preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n you_o hear_v before_o that_o the_o preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n can_v do_v it_o alone_o but_o can_v the_o spirit_n will_v not_o the_o spirit_n do_v it_o alone_o it_o can_v do_v it_o alone_o indeed_o but_o mark_v i_o pray_v the_o spirit_n will_v not_o ordinary_o convince_v and_o convert_v effectual_o and_o save_o any_o soul_n without_o the_o ministration_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o give_v more_o than_o all_o that_o ever_o you_o can_v do_v for_o they_o if_o they_o may_v be_v but_o instrumental_a for_o the_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n of_o your_o soul_n it_o will_v be_v more_o comfort_n and_o joy_n to_o they_o than_o all_o the_o world_n beside_o joy_n to_o they_o ay_o it_o will_v be_v joy_n to_o the_o very_a angel_n in_o heaven_n luk._n 15.10_o 11._o there_o shall_v be_v the_o gospel_n to_o you_o and_o people_n come_v and_o receive_v it_o into_o their_o ear_n and_o not_o into_o their_o heart_n no_o good_a do_v upon_o they_o but_o they_o remain_v as_o carnal_a as_o worldly_a and_o unbelieving_a as_o before_o and_o they_o see_v no_o fruit_n of_o their_o ministry_n this_o be_v the_o grief_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n they_o labour_v and_o labour_n and_o question_n whether_o the_o lord_n do_v own_o their_o ministry_n or_o no_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o complain_v as_o the_o prophet_n isa_n 49.6_o i_o have_v labour_v in_o vain_a i_o have_v spend_v my_o strength_n for_o naught_o and_o in_o vain_a so_o the_o poor_a servant_n of_o christ_n go_v with_o a_o dead_a heart_n into_o their_o study_n and_o come_v to_o preach_v with_o a_o sad_a heart_n when_o they_o see_v no_o good_a do_v no_o save_a work_n wrought_v this_o be_v a_o very_a cut_v to_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n and_o they_o will_v rather_o if_o they_o may_v have_v their_o will_n cease_v mention_v of_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n to_o people_n therefore_o let_v it_o be_v the_o desire_n and_o endeavour_v and_o care_n of_o people_n so_o to_o hear_v and_o receive_v the_o word_n into_o their_o heart_n that_o it_o may_v become_v effectual_a and_o a_o instrument_n in_o the_o lord_n hand_n for_o the_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n objection_n but_o you_o will_v say_v be_v it_o in_o our_o power_n i_o know_v you_o think_v so_o in_o your_o heart_n to_o make_v the_o word_n convince_a and_o convert_v and_o save_v answer_n i_o do_v not_o say_v it_o be_v in_o your_o power_n but_o thus_o much_o i_o may_v say_v you_o may_v oppose_v and_o resist_v the_o save_a work_n of_o the_o gospel_n upon_o your_o heart_n and_o therefore_o to_o be_v find_v wait_v commend_v three_o or_o four_o word_n by_o way_n of_o direction_n in_o this_o case_n and_o so_o i_o shall_v leave_v all_o to_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n do_v you_o desire_v to_o have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n make_v effectual_a for_o the_o convince_a and_o convert_v and_o save_v of_o your_o soul_n then_o 1._o be_v much_o and_o earnest_a in_o pray_v for_o the_o spirit_n to_o go_v along_o with_o the_o preach_v of_o the_o word_n into_o your_o heart_n and_o soul_n ay_o pray_v much_o for_o that_o o_o before_o you_o come_v you_o shall_v be_v careful_a to_o wrestle_v with_o god_n for_o the_o how_o shall_v we_o build_v up_o ourselves_o in_o our_o most_o holy_a faith_n how_o shall_v we_o do_v it_o why_o say_v he_o pray_v in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o be_v the_o way_n beg_v earnest_o gospel_n it_o be_v appoint_v for_o that_o end_n eph._n 4.11_o 12._o say_v the_o apostle_n christ_n when_o he_o ascend_v up_o on_o high_a he_o give_v gift_n to_o man_n ministerial_a gift_n he_o give_v he_o that_o soul_n will_v be_v unstable_a its_o comfort_n will_v be_v unstable_a and_o though_o he_o may_v hold_v up_o his_o head_n so_o long_o as_o all_o be_v calm_a and_o clear_a above_o he_o but_o when_o the_o assault_n of_o the_o devil_n come_v and_o the_o power_n of_o hell_n be_v let_v loose_a upon_o it_o to_o try_v its_o foundation_n if_o the_o foundation_n be_v not_o deep_o root_v all_o the_o building_n will_v come_v to_o nothing_o it_o be_v like_o a_o plant_n or_o tree_n that_o be_v plant_v but_o shallow_a in_o the_o ground_n and_o will_v be_v apt_a to_o wither_v so_o christ_n compare_v it_o mat._n 13.21_o the_o seed_n that_o fall_v upon_o the_o stony_a ground_n spring_v up_o for_o a_o while_n but_o when_o the_o sun_n do_v rise_v when_o temptation_n come_v scorch_a finish_v the_o second_o thing_n propound_v i_o shall_v now_o have_v come_v to_o the_o three_o thing_n to_o show_v you_o that_o convince_a of_o sin_n be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n but_o that_o and_o some_o other_o thing_n i_o must_v leave_v till_o another_o opportunity_n the_o holy_a ghost_n convince_v of_o sin_n sermon_n v._n john_n 16.9_o of_o sin_n because_o they_o believe_v understand_v by_o this_o conviction_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o first_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o wherein_o it_o lay_v and_o that_o you_o hear_v in_o three_o thing_n 2._o you_o hear_v the_o necessity_n of_o it_o why_o this_o work_n of_o convince_a of_o sin_n be_v so_o necessary_a in_o order_n to_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n you_o hear_v the_o necessity_n of_o it_o in_o five_o or_o six_o thing_n upon_o which_o account_n it_o be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o salvation_n to_o be_v convince_v of_o sin_n well_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n yet_o remain_v to_o be_v speak_v to_o for_o the_o open_n of_o this_o point_n 3._o the_o three_o thing_n be_v to_o show_v that_o this_o work_n of_o convince_a of_o sin_n be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n nothing_o short_a of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n can_v real_o and_o true_o convince_v the_o soul_n of_o sin_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n and_o then_o 4._o that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o the_o first_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n these_o two_o thing_n i_o shall_v now_o proceed_v to_o through_o the_o lord_n assistance_n 3._o well_o then_o we_o be_v to_o fall_v upon_o the_o three_o to_o make_v it_o evident_a to_o you_o that_o the_o work_n of_o convince_a of_o sin_n be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o how_o do_v that_o appear_v brief_o i_o shall_v give_v you_o two_o or_o three_o demonstration_n of_o it_o 1._o it_o appear_v from_o the_o opposition_n that_o be_v in_o every_o carnal_a heart_n to_o be_v convince_v of_o sin_n there_o be_v a_o desperate_a opposition_n in_o our_o heart_n natural_o we_o be_v utter_o averse_a and_o unwilling_a to_o be_v convince_v of_o sin_n we_o be_v loath_a to_o come_v to_o the_o
