as_o not_o to_o meddle_v with_o particular_n the_o infiniteness_n of_o god_n the_o power_n knowledge_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n there_o must_v be_v some_o knowledge_n of_o these_o in_o some_o degree_n and_o measure_n or_o else_o i_o shall_v not_o respect_n god_n as_o god_n nor_o worship_n god_n or_o make_v any_o dependence_n on_o he_o as_o god_n for_o my_o dependence_n on_o he_o by_o faith_n must_v have_v relation_n to_o the_o excellency_n of_o god_n to_o have_v a_o bottom_n foundation_n and_o groundwork_n on_o that_o work_n in_o his_o work_n 2_o god_n be_v to_o be_v know_v in_o his_o work_n the_o work_n of_o creation_n and_o providence_n be_v the_o main_a and_o so_o in_o those_o excellency_n of_o relation_n that_o depend_v on_o these_o for_o by_o virtue_n of_o this_o that_o he_o be_v creator_n and_o governor_n of_o the_o world_n he_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o lord_n of_o all_o and_o all_o creature_n be_v and_o must_v be_v serviceable_a to_o he_o for_o dominion_n and_o sovereignty_n over_o another_o god_n can_v not_o have_v except_o he_o have_v make_v it_o and_o there_o be_v nothing_o till_o he_o make_v manifest_v his_o excellency_n in_o some_o work_n nothing_o but_o himself_o now_o no_o man_n have_v dominion_n in_o regard_n of_o himself_o to_o speak_v proper_o as_o a_o lordship_n for_o that_o be_v a_o relative_a attribute_n reflect_v on_o the_o work_n of_o god_n when_o god_n have_v make_v the_o world_n and_o the_o creature_n in_o it_o there_o be_v a_o resultancie_n and_o relation_n arise_v out_o of_o that_o between_o he_o and_o his_o work_n they_o be_v his_o workmanship_n and_o all_o his_o creature_n and_o serviceable_a at_o his_o dispose_n and_o he_o as_o their_o lord_n dispose_v and_o order_v all_o and_o so_o much_o of_o necessity_n must_v be_v know_v in_o general_a to_o lay_v a_o tolerable_a foundation_n for_o any_o religious_a carriage_n and_o deportment_n of_o a_o man_n towards_o god_n will_n in_o his_o revealed_z will_n 2._o there_o be_v a_o other_o main_a thing_n to_o be_v know_v concern_v god_n and_o that_o be_v he_o must_v be_v know_v not_o only_o according_a to_o the_o excellency_n of_o his_o nature_n but_o in_o his_o reveal_v will_v a_o man_n must_v know_v some_o thing_n concern_v the_o reveal_v will_n of_o god_n what_o be_v and_o what_o be_v not_o please_v and_o acceptable_a unto_o he_o in_o any_o religion_n for_o no_o religion_n can_v have_v any_o acceptance_n or_o be_v of_o any_o worth_n except_o it_o be_v regulate_v by_o the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o do_v those_o thing_n that_o we_o do_v out_o of_o our_o own_o head_n and_o fancy_n which_o we_o think_v shall_v please_v god_n or_o else_o god_n shall_v have_v nothing_o be_v that_o which_o god_n abhor_v and_o for_o which_o he_o will_v requite_v you_o with_o a_o quis_fw-la requisivit_fw-la who_o have_v require_v these_o thing_n we_o must_v know_v therefore_o the_o reveal_v will_n of_o god_n to_o mention_v no_o other_o thing_n in_o the_o main_a substantial_a thing_n viz._n that_o god_n be_v please_v to_o enter_v into_o covenant_n with_o man_n and_o except_o we_o know_v the_o substance_n and_o the_o main_a of_o the_o covenant_n between_o god_n and_o man_n in_o which_o god_n be_v please_v to_o reveal_v himself_o concern_v the_o way_n to_o our_o happiness_n which_o contain_v 1_o partly_o righteousness_n which_o contain_v what_o he_o command_v in_o the_o law_n holiness_n righteousness_n what_o he_o command_v and_o require_v at_o our_o hand_n whether_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n or_o in_o a_o evangelical_a way_n 1_o in_o the_o legal_a covenant_n perfect_a obedience_n be_v require_v and_o so_o perfect_a holiness_n and_o perfect_a righteousness_n gospel_n in_o the_o gospel_n 2_o in_o the_o evangelical_a covenant_n obedience_n be_v not_o so_o require_v though_o there_o be_v still_o a_o natural_a obligation_n on_o man_n to_o god_n he_o owe_v he_o all_o obedience_n and_o that_o can_v be_v dissolve_v the_o obligation_n can_v be_v cancel_v there_o can_v come_v no_o supervenient_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o take_v it_o off_o much_o more_o be_v it_o far_o from_o grace_n to_o annihilate_v the_o obligation_n of_o obedience_n it_o only_o heal_v the_o inability_n of_o man_n and_o set_v he_o in_o power_n but_o yet_o obedience_n now_o though_o it_o be_v require_v it_o be_v in_o another_o way_n not_o in_o the_o vigour_n of_o perfection_n of_o obedience_n but_o so_o as_o that_o all_o perfection_n of_o obedience_n be_v make_v up_o by_o the_o addition_n of_o two_o other_o thing_n which_o the_o legal_a covenant_n be_v ignorant_a of_o and_o that_o be_v 1_o faith_n in_o christ_n that_o what_o i_o come_v short_a of_o in_o my_o own_o performance_n and_o so_o can_v not_o satisfy_v the_o law_n or_o god_n and_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n i_o therefore_o go_v out_o of_o myself_o to_o find_v it_o in_o another_o and_o lay_v my_o confidence_n on_o another_o who_o have_v pay_v the_o price_n for_o my_o happiness_n and_o make_v up_o what_o be_v want_v in_o i_o obedience_n be_v now_o supply_v by_o faith_n which_o be_v evangelical_a and_o which_o the_o law_n know_v not_o of_o before_o 2_o obedience_n be_v now_o make_v up_o by_o repentance_n that_o though_o a_o man_n do_v not_o keep_v a_o constant_a tenor_n of_o exact_a and_o rigorous_a obedience_n yet_o there_o come_v in_o a_o supply_n of_o that_o in_o another_o evangelical_a way_n make_v it_o whole_a by_o repentance_n by_o sorrow_v and_o mourn_v for_o those_o fail_n and_o walk_v humble_o before_o god_n the_o same_o obedience_n be_v require_v as_o much_o as_o before_o but_o the_o rigour_n be_v not_o exact_v but_o god_n be_v please_v to_o accept_v of_o repentance_n such_o as_o may_v proceed_v from_o faith_n so_o that_o now_o our_o obedience_n be_v supply_v by_o repentance_n for_o out_o fail_n in_o the_o exactness_n of_o it_o now_o i_o speak_v of_o these_o thing_n only_o as_o thing_n to_o be_v know_v and_o believe_v the_o the_o sum_n as_o least_o of_o god_n covenant_n by_o which_o he_o be_v please_v to_o dispense_v happiness_n to_o we_o in_o what_o way_n and_o what_o he_o require_v at_o our_o hand_n towards_o the_o attain_n of_o it_o before_o he_o will_v bestow_v it_o upon_o we_o there_o must_v be_v some_o good_a degree_n of_o knowledge_n of_o these_o thing_n but_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o all_o the_o groundwork_n lay_v towards_o happiness_n by_o commend_v by_o 2_o therefore_o we_o must_v know_v not_o only_o what_o god_n command_v in_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o covenant_n but_o how_o god_n commend_v this_o covenant_n unto_o we_o and_o how_o he_o ratifi_v it_o 1_o by_o menace_n menace_n menace_n in_o which_o we_o know_v the_o sanction_n and_o threaten_n of_o wrath_n upon_o our_o breach_n and_o neglect_v of_o what_o god_n require_v of_o we_o in_o the_o covenant_n 2_o by_o promise_n on_o god_n part_n promise_v promise_v in_o which_o we_o may_v see_v what_o we_o may_v expert_a from_o god_n and_o look_n for_o at_o his_o hand_n if_o we_o do_v perform_v what_o he_o require_v now_o the_o covenant_n contain_v both_o the_o promise_n of_o this_o life_n and_o the_o promise_n of_o a_o better_a life_n these_o thing_n all_o belong_v to_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o covenant_n between_o god_n and_o man_n and_o contain_v the_o way_n by_o which_o he_o convey_v happiness_n unto_o we_o and_o therefore_o must_v be_v know_v but_o i_o speak_v only_o of_o knowledge_n in_o the_o act_n 2_o now_o lest_o there_o shall_v be_v any_o thing_n want_v in_o the_o branch_n of_o knowledge_n thing_n divine_a thing_n i_o add_v this_o to_o make_v a_o supply_n of_o it_o only_o to_o mention_v it_o therefore_o and_o so_o to_o pass_v there_o must_v be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o divine_a thing_n the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n in_o his_o nature_n and_o in_o his_o will_n and_o of_o divine_a thing_n that_o pertain_v to_o these_o that_o have_v a_o necessary_a connexion_n with_o these_o 2_o faith_n in_o god_n assent_n i'faith_o assent_n there_o must_v be_v a_o like_n in_o the_o understanding_n a_o man_n have_v a_o apprehension_n of_o these_o thing_n but_o a_o bare_a apprehension_n of_o these_o thing_n be_v not_o sufficient_a but_o it_o must_v be_v a_o apprehension_n and_o knowledge_n join_v with_o faith_n believe_v and_o assent_v to_o those_o thing_n we_o do_v apprehend_v a_o man_n may_v know_v something_o suppose_n concern_v heaven_n that_o another_o man_n may_v tell_v he_o but_o he_o may_v believe_v it_o no_o more_o than_o a_o fable_n or_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o discourse_v and_o describe_v it_o as_o well_o as_o another_o but_o if_o so_o be_v a_o man_n yield_v a_o assent_n or_o belief_n unto_o it_o so_o as_o he_o conceive_v a_o reality_n in_o the_o thing_n and_o a_o substance_n so_o as_o it_o be_v not_o fabular_a and_o imaginary_a but_o real_a this_o be_v faith_n
have_v occasion_n to_o do_v it_o hereafter_o when_o i_o come_v to_o handle_v the_o other_o point_n for_o all_o these_o place_n that_o prove_v our_o happiness_n to_o be_v in_o god_n alone_o and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n unto_o it_o they_o all_o prove_v this_o point_n i_o shall_v select_v some_o few_o for_o present_a to_o mention_v that_o first_o wherein_o this_o argument_n be_v treat_v in_o it_o be_v the_o same_o with_o this_o wherein_o happiness_n be_v seat_v mat._n 5._o at_o the_o beginning_n our_o saviour_n there_o in_o this_o sermon_n upon_o the_o mount_n purposely_o treat_v of_o happiness_n and_o blessedness_n he_o set_v the_o crown_n of_o blessedness_n or_o happiness_n on_o the_o head_n of_o many_o thing_n as_o bless_a be_v those_o that_o be_v poor_a in_o spirit_n bless_v be_v those_o that_o mourn_n bless_v be_v the_o meek_a etc._n etc._n but_o among_o all_o those_o he_o mention_n there_o he_o mention_n none_o of_o those_o create_v good_a thing_n wherein_o a_o man_n may_v suppose_v they_o shall_v be_v there_o be_v not_o bless_a be_v the_o rich_a man_n or_o bless_a be_v the_o honourable_a man_n or_o the_o wiseman_n or_o he_o that_o enjoy_v the_o good_n of_o beauty_n or_o riches_n or_o strength_n of_o body_n and_o the_o like_a none_o of_o those_o thing_n mention_v but_o all_o these_o thing_n that_o be_v mention_v there_o be_v spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a grace_n that_o put_v a_o man_n into_o fellowship_n and_o communion_n with_o god_n the_o second_o scripture_n be_v that_o in_o psal_n 34.12_o where_o the_o psalmist_n be_v in_o a_o way_n of_o direction_n come_v to_o i_o my_o child_n &_o i_o will_v instruct_v you_o in_o the_o way_n to_o happiness_n who_o be_v he_o that_o desire_v to_o see_v good_a to_o live_v long_o and_o see_v good_a day_n to_o see_v happiness_n and_o to_o come_v to_o happiness_n where_o he_o mention_n none_o of_o those_o thing_n as_o i_o name_v before_o but_o the_o same_o that_o our_o saviour_n seem_v to_o express_v and_o he_o exclude_v other_o thing_n he_o direct_v to_o spiritual_a way_n and_o spiritual_a mean_n for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o happiness_n but_o for_o earthly_a thing_n he_o do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o once_o name_v they_o and_o then_o again_o psal_n 73._o about_o the_o beginning_n there_o be_v a_o full_a proof_n of_o it_o in_o the_o whole_a beginning_n there_o the_o prophet_n reckon_v up_o the_o propriety_n and_o the_o happiness_n of_o wicked_a man_n and_o express_v it_o so_o much_o the_o full_a because_o the_o glister_n of_o these_o worldly_a thing_n have_v dazzle_v the_o eye_n of_o the_o psalmist_n and_o they_o have_v almost_o make_v his_o foot_n to_o stippe_v ver._n 2._o he_o be_v so_o take_v with_o the_o flare_v of_o earthly_a thing_n and_o the_o prosperous_a state_n of_o man_n in_o worldly_a thing_n that_o he_o begin_v to_o bless_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o think_v well_o of_o those_o that_o enjoy_v they_o and_o to_o repine_v at_o his_o own_o estate_n and_o thus_o he_o be_v carry_v away_o till_o god_n bring_v he_o into_o the_o sanctuary_n verse_n 18._o there_o he_o find_v that_o all_o those_o that_o have_v they_o be_v not_o happy_a but_o those_o that_o have_v they_o be_v set_v in_o slippery_a place_n there_o be_v no_o solidity_n of_o happiness_n that_o can_v be_v gather_v out_o of_o those_o thing_n when_o god_n bring_v he_o into_o the_o sanctuary_n than_o he_o learn_v there_o that_o there_o be_v no_o true_a happiness_n in_o all_o these_o earthly_a thing_n and_o so_o psal_n 144._o the_o last_o verse_n the_o psalmist_n there_o in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o verse_n seem_v to_o look_v this_o way_n as_o though_o there_o be_v happiness_n in_o these_o create_a thing_n happy_a be_v the_o people_n that_o be_v in_o such_o a_o case_n the_o people_n that_o flourish_n in_o prosperity_n as_o in_o the_o forego_n verse_n and_o so_o far_o indeed_o as_o they_o be_v conjoin_v with_o god_n there_o be_v something_o of_o happiness_n in_o they_o but_o lest_o any_o shall_v mistake_v the_o prophet_n he_o correct_v himself_o again_o and_o say_v as_o if_o he_o do_v unsay_v what_o he_o he_o have_v say_v happy_a be_v the_o people_n who_o have_v god_n for_o their_o lord_n they_o be_v happy_a man_n who_o god_n be_v the_o lord_n that_o be_v the_o right_n of_o it_o it_o be_v not_o these_o thing_n wherein_o true_a happiness_n lie_v though_o they_o may_v be_v subservient_fw-fr to_o it_o and_o something_o conducible_a to_o happiness_n yet_o our_o happiness_n do_v lie_v in_o our_o conjunction_n with_o god_n and_o therefore_o the_o prophet_n jer._n 9.23_o give_v a_o caution_n let_v not_o the_o wiseman_n glory_n in_o his_o wisdom_n nor_o the_o strong_a man_n in_o his_o strength_n nor_o the_o rich_a man_n glory_n in_o his_o riches_n none_o of_o these_o thing_n can_v make_v a_o man_n happy_a these_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n that_o a_o man_n can_v delight_v in_o or_o boast_v of_o there_o must_v be_v other_o thing_n that_o must_v make_v up_o this_o happiness_n or_o else_o we_o shall_v come_v short_a of_o it_o and_o so_o in_o 1_o tim._n 6.17_o see_v what_o the_o apostle_n say_v concern_v one_o thing_n which_o have_v the_o great_a show_n and_o splendour_n viz._n riches_n charge_v they_o that_o be_v rich_a in_o this_o world_n that_o they_o be_v not_o high_a mind_v and_o that_o they_o trust_v not_o in_o their_o uncertain_a riches_n that_o they_o do_v not_o build_v a_o conceit_a happiness_n in_o or_o upon_o they_o and_o think_v they_o be_v in_o a_o good_a estate_n by_o reason_n of_o they_o the_o apostle_n do_v it_o with_o authority_n and_o efficacy_n and_o he_o will_v have_v it_o lay_v home_o to_o they_o because_o man_n be_v exceed_o apt_a to_o cozen_v themselves_o in_o such_o thing_n and_o to_o give_v something_o as_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o look_v hoseah_n 1.21.22_o alas_o all_o these_o thing_n and_o the_o goodness_n of_o they_o so_o far_o as_o they_o may_v conduce_v in_o a_o inferior_a rank_n for_o our_o good_a depend_v upon_o god_n as_o god_n by_o the_o prophet_n there_o say_v in_o that_o day_n say_v the_o lord_n i_o will_v hear_v the_o heaven_n and_o they_o shall_v hear_v the_o earth_n and_o the_o earth_n shall_v hear_v the_o corn_n and_o wine_n and_o the_o oil_n etc._n etc._n the_o first_o link_n of_o the_o chain_n be_v tie_v to_o the_o throne_n of_o god_n i_o will_v hear_v say_v the_o lord_n the_o earth_n and_o the_o earth_n shall_v hear_v the_o corn_n etc._n etc._n all_o the_o influence_n there_o he_o tie_v to_o god_n all_o come_v from_o he_o and_o depend_v upon_o he_o experience_n experience_n 2._o by_o experience_n all_o the_o experience_n in_o the_o world_n make_v this_o certain_o true_a and_o evident_a especial_o to_o those_o that_o have_v find_v the_o experiment_n and_o to_o other_o likewise_o if_o they_o will_v trust_v to_o experience_n and_o not_o like_a fool_n buy_v their_o own_o wisdom_n by_o their_o own_o experience_n 1._o take_v a_o extraordinary_a experiment_n solomon_n extraordinary_a of_o solomon_n the_o experiment_n of_o one_o may_v serve_v for_o all_o viz._n that_o of_o solomon_n who_o give_v up_o his_o verdict_n vanity_n of_o vanity_n all_o be_v vanity_n etc._n etc._n eccles_n 1.2_o i_o will_v desire_v every_o one_o to_o consider_v this_o well_o there_o be_v no_o exception_n to_o be_v put_v in_o against_o the_o verdict_n but_o it_o will_v speak_v home_o to_o the_o point_n and_o absolute_o convince_v any_o one_o that_o be_v a_o rational_a man_n a_o man_n testimony_n may_v be_v elevate_v or_o abase_v upon_o divers_a ground_n but_o there_o be_v none_o can_v come_v here_o to_o make_v a_o slight_a or_o diminish_v the_o authority_n of_o solomon_n he_o want_v not_o mean_n to_o try_v for_o he_o have_v all_o these_o thing_n and_o can_v run_v through_o they_o all_o and_o taste_v and_o pick_v out_o as_o it_o be_v all_o the_o excellency_n of_o they_o he_o be_v the_o rich_a king_n that_o ever_o be_v he_o have_v the_o great_a plenty_n of_o gold_n and_o all_o other_o thing_n that_o god_n have_v bestow_v upon_o he_o there_o want_v no_o mean_n whatsoever_o to_o make_v a_o experiment_n of_o any_o worldly_a thing_n but_o he_o have_v it_o be_v a_o king_n and_o a_o rich_a king_n neither_o want_v there_o any_o wisdom_n for_o if_o he_o have_v all_o other_o thing_n and_o want_v skill_n it_o have_v be_v nothing_o he_o may_v have_v go_v the_o wrong_a way_n to_o work_v but_o he_o want_v not_o skill_n to_o make_v a_o experiment_n although_o it_o have_v be_v to_o draw_v fire_n out_o of_o flint_n as_o alchemist_n can_v draw_v oil_n out_o of_o iron_n whereas_o ordinary_a people_n can_v draw_v little_a moisture_n out_o of_o it_o be_v they_o want_v skill_n to_o fetch_v out_o the_o quintessence_n of_o it_o but_o it_o can_v be_v say_v
do_v no_o good_a for_o it_o be_v god_n blessing_n that_o make_v any_o thing_n nourish_v and_o comfortable_a to_o we_o though_o we_o have_v the_o thing_n and_o they_o remain_v with_o we_o yet_o they_o can_v be_v useful_a to_o we_o neither_o bread_n to_o nourish_v we_o nor_o clothes_n to_o warm_v we_o or_o wisdom_n to_o guide_v our_o way_n god_n can_v take_v away_o all_o these_o and_o nothing_o be_v any_o thing_n without_o the_o lord_n nothing_o have_v any_o virtue_n to_o preserve_v we_o without_o he_o but_o god_n may_v beat_v our_o own_o weapon_n on_o our_o own_o head_n and_o afflict_v we_o and_o make_v those_o good_a thing_n executioner_n of_o his_o just_a judgement_n against_o we_o so_o that_o without_o god_n there_o be_v no_o sweetness_n in_o these_o thing_n but_o our_o conjunction_n with_o god_n that_o give_v all_o the_o sweetness_n and_o excellency_n in_o which_o they_o may_v any_o way_n conduce_v to_o our_o happiness_n 3._o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o man_n we_o see_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o the_o creature_n be_v a_o diminutive_a and_o a_o dependent_a good_a which_o may_v fail_v and_o there_o be_v no_o good_a at_o all_o in_o they_o without_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n but_o now_o the_o nature_n of_o a_o man_n be_v such_o as_o it_o must_v be_v free_a from_o all_o these_o defect_n it_o desire_v something_o else_o that_o it_o must_v be_v free_a from_o these_o defect_n immortal_a long_a immortal_a 1._o the_o nature_n of_o man_n require_v good_a that_o may_v be_v long_o immortal_a the_o mind_n be_v the_o man_n and_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o man_n hospes_fw-la immortal_a good_a something_o that_o can_v decay_v and_o therefore_o all_o thing_n that_o fade_v or_o decay_v can_v no_o way_n do_v it_o they_o be_v too_o short_a to_o cover_v he_o to_o reach_v to_o emptiness_n and_o want_v of_o satisfaction_n unless_o he_o can_v have_v all_o the_o good_a he_o be_v capable_a of_o but_o now_o all_o the_o creature_n can_v reach_v this_o universality_n man_n be_v capable_a of_o more_o than_o all_o the_o create_a thing_n be_v of_o a_o great_a good_a than_o be_v in_o any_o creature_n and_o so_o long_o as_o he_o miss_v the_o principal_a he_o be_v far_o from_o happiness_n it_o be_v a_o remarkable_a say_n of_o the_o father_n concern_v king_n ahab_n when_o he_o be_v walk_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o three_o year_n famine_n i_o have_v gold_n and_o silver_n and_o wife_n and_o child_n and_o all_o these_o like_a thing_n but_o what_o do_v these_o thing_n good_a see_v the_o heaven_n be_v as_o brass_n and_o the_o earth_n as_o iron_n i_o have_v no_o supply_n than_o so_o the_o creature_n although_o present_a can_v do_v any_o thing_n without_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n but_o he_o himself_o can_v do_v it_o though_o no_o creature_n be_v present_a yea_o god_n be_v so_o eminent_a a_o good_a that_o he_o contain_v the_o transcendent_a excellency_n of_o every_o creature_n for_o let_v any_o creature_n be_v want_v as_o fire_n to_o warm_v we_o or_o water_n to_o wash_v we_o yet_o god_n can_v supply_v that_o defect_n he_o can_v do_v it_o by_o himself_o because_o all_o the_o excellency_n of_o every_o creature_n be_v transcendent_o in_o god_n he_o have_v power_n to_o suspend_v the_o action_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o take_v off_o the_o blessing_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n god_n can_v supply_v the_o want_n of_o the_o creature_n by_o a_o hide_a way_n of_o his_o own_o blessing_n he_o can_v make_v a_o little_a to_o go_v a_o great_a way_n yea_o without_o all_o as_o well_o as_o with_o all_o he_o can_v make_v a_o man_n happy_a he_o be_v a_o equivalent_a good_a to_o make_v satisfaction_n for_o all_o and_o so_o in_o this_o respect_n he_o can_v be_v our_o happiness_n and_o bring_v we_o to_o happiness_n 3._o via_fw-la negationis_fw-la god_n alone_o can_v be_v our_o happiness_n because_o there_o be_v no_o defect_n in_o he_o he_o be_v a_o rock_n in_o time_n of_o need_n he_o can_v do_v whatsoever_o any_o creature_n or_o all_o can_v do_v for_o we_o nay_o more_o for_o if_o we_o have_v all_o the_o creature_n they_o will_v be_v all_o defective_a but_o there_o be_v no_o defect_n in_o god_n as_o suppose_v if_o

just_a reproof_n that_o meet_v with_o every_o one_o more_o or_o less_o why_o do_v not_o we_o prosecute_v this_o way_n more_o earnest_o then_o and_o why_o be_v we_o sluggish_a in_o this_o way_n be_v it_o not_o the_o way_n of_o happiness_n why_o do_v we_o not_o labour_n and_o endeavour_v after_o knowledge_n why_o do_v not_o we_o labour_v to_o raise_v and_o elevate_v our_o affection_n to_o a_o high_a pitch_n towards_o god_n why_o do_v not_o we_o strive_v to_o abound_v in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o make_v our_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a by_o add_v one_o grace_n to_o another_o one_o action_n of_o obedience_n to_o another_o to_o scale_v heaven_n climb_v up_o from_o one_o round_a of_o the_o ladder_n to_o another_o and_o so_o be_v go_v upward_o still_o o_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v so_o sluggish_a and_o slow_a in_o these_o thing_n that_o make_v so_o for_o our_o happiness_n that_o be_v indeed_o as_o we_o have_v prove_v the_o way_n of_o happiness_n when_o on_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o time_n we_o can_v not_o then_o prosecute_v we_o come_v now_o unto_o it_o there_o be_v a_o double_a branch_n of_o the_o exhortation_n according_a to_o which_o i_o desire_v to_o go_v particular_a particular_a first_o in_o relation_n to_o every_o one_o of_o these_o particular_n in_o the_o point_n to_o persuade_v man_n to_o labour_n to_o get_v every_o one_o of_o they_o viz._n your_o knowledge_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o object_n divine_a object_n divine_a must_v be_v divine_a a_o divine_a knowledge_n knowledge_n of_o god_n knowledge_n of_o christ_n knowledge_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o grace_n and_o of_o the_o covenant_n between_o god_n and_o man_n those_o essential_a thing_n that_o god_n have_v signify_v unto_o we_o in_o his_o covenant_n for_o our_o guidance_n to_o happiness_n the_o knowledge_n of_o these_o thing_n especial_o i_o know_v there_o be_v no_o knowledge_n in_o the_o world_n but_o be_v precious_a even_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o mean_a thing_n the_o knowledge_n even_o of_o the_o base_a thing_n may_v be_v of_o very_o good_a use_n but_o what_o be_v all_o the_o knowledge_n in_o the_o world_n to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n that_o make_v the_o world_n and_o of_o christ_n that_o redeem_v the_o world_n that_o be_v the_o knowledge_n which_o do_v immediate_o conduce_v towards_o our_o attain_n of_o happiness_n and_o salvation_n man_n may_v swell_v themselves_o in_o vain_a conceit_n of_o other_o kind_n of_o literature_n and_o look_v big_a and_o scornful_a upon_o this_o divine_a knowledge_n but_o yet_o one_o drachm_n of_o this_o one_o grain_n of_o this_o be_v worth_n more_o than_o all_o the_o knowledge_n in_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o remember_v this_o that_o we_o may_v not_o mistake_v our_o scope_n and_o aim_n i_o do_v not_o interdict_v any_o other_o knowledge_n subordinate_a in_o its_o place_n and_o rank_n but_o i_o set_v this_o in_o the_o high_a place_n and_o high_a rank_n the_o divine_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o those_o thing_n that_o concern_v our_o happiness_n in_o god_n and_o this_o be_v the_o scope_n of_o the_o exhortation_n in_o regard_n of_o this_o that_o we_o will_v be_v content_v to_o take_v a_o little_a pain_n from_o other_o thing_n to_o get_v this_o divine_a knowledge_n at_o least_o not_o to_o squander_v away_o all_o our_o precious_a time_n and_o part_n busy_o in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o other_o thing_n that_o will_v do_v we_o no_o good_a but_o take_v it_o from_o they_o and_o bestow_v ourselves_o our_o time_n and_o our_o wit_n for_o the_o pursue_v of_o divine_a knowledge_n which_o seal_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o both_o the_o former_a a_o man_n can_v have_v no_o assurance_n that_o he_o have_v knowledge_n that_o be_v save_v or_o that_o his_o affection_n be_v such_o as_o be_v right_a except_o both_o these_o show_n themselves_o by_o incline_v we_o to_o obedience_n for_o there_o be_v a_o natural_a l_o dependency_n between_o this_o and_o the_o former_a between_o the_o action_n of_o obedience_n and_o the_o root_n that_o i_o speak_v of_o it_o be_v impossible_a but_o they_o must_v break_v forth_o and_o show_v themselves_o in_o action_n at_o least_o in_o seasonable_a time_n it_o be_v true_a the_o tree_n do_v not_o always_o show_v the_o life_n of_o it_o by_o the_o leaf_n and_o fruit_n they_o be_v something_o separate_v from_o life_n but_o yet_o that_o tree_n that_o do_v not_o show_v though_o it_o lie_v dead_a all_o the_o winter_n that_o it_o live_v in_o the_o spring_n i_o say_v if_o it_o do_v not_o spring_v up_o in_o the_o sunshine_n in_o summer_n if_o it_o do_v not_o then_o flourish_v it_o be_v dead_a so_o in_o this_o case_n certain_o though_o action_n do_v not_o always_o accompany_v we_o a_o man_n affection_n may_v be_v strong_a in_o he_o but_o yet_o there_o be_v more_o require_v to_o action_n than_o affection_n the_o intrinsical_a character_n of_o grace_n lie_v principal_o in_o the_o affection_n and_o therefore_o when_o a_o man_n come_v to_o a_o inward_a breach_n that_o be_v the_o worst_a the_o external_o may_v fail_v and_o the_o apostle_n complain_v of_o that_o miserable_a man_n that_o i_o be_o his_o will_n be_v good_a his_o affection_n be_v good_a but_o he_o have_v not_o power_n to_o act_v but_o yet_o when_o there_o be_v a_o season_n of_o action_n and_o all_o thing_n concur_v when_o god_n afford_v other_o convenience_n in_o abundance_n to_o produceaction_n if_o a_o man_n do_v not_o bring_v forth_o action_n then_o certain_o i_o will_v conclude_v that_o knowledge_n be_v dead_a knowledge_n and_o those_o affection_n be_v dead_a that_o life_n be_v go_v out_o of_o he_o or_o else_o it_o will_v show_v itself_o in_o this_o warm_a summer_n and_o we_o shall_v see_v both_o leaf_n and_o fruit_n for_o it_o can_v lie_v hide_v if_o a_o man_n have_v affection_n to_o god_n but_o it_o will_v break_v forth_o upon_o occasion_n obedience_n therefore_o be_v the_o seal_n of_o truth_n &_o we_o can_v never_o evidence_n the_o truth_n of_o our_o knowledge_n and_o our_o affection_n except_o upon_o occasion_n we_o show_v it_o by_o the_o fruitfulness_n of_o our_o action_n 3._o end_n root_n of_o all_o end_n and_o again_o this_o obedience_n be_v the_o seal_n and_o immediate_a root_n of_o all_o these_o end_n which_o we_o shall_v propound_v to_o ourselves_o it_o be_v the_o immediate_a root_n of_o our_o consolation_n consolation_n 1_o own_o consolation_n a_o man_n may_v gather_v comfort_n from_o his_o obedience_n to_o god_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n i_o do_v not_o say_v it_o be_v the_o proper_a root_n but_o it_o be_v the_o grow_v by_o virtue_n of_o the_o root_n but_o the_o branch_n be_v the_o most_o proper_a place_n on_o which_o they_o be_v to_o grow_v so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n comfort_n be_v immediate_o gather_v as_o it_o be_v from_o the_o forecite_v in_o the_o action_n in_o the_o utmost_a branch_n of_o the_o actual_a obedience_n immediate_o we_o have_v but_o little_a comfort_n from_o our_o affection_n because_o we_o have_v buâ—_n little_a assurance_n of_o the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o affection_n but_o our_o comfort_n be_v gather_v and_o multiply_v in_o our_o abound_v in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o more_o obedience_n the_o more_o comfort_n i_o can_v express_v it_o better_o than_o thus_o a_o man_n body_n be_v warm_a when_o his_o clothes_n be_v on_o he_o to_o keep_v he_o warm_v the_o clothes_n give_v i_o not_o that_o warmth_n that_o i_o have_v but_o my_o body_n and_o yet_o the_o clothes_n keep_v i_o in_o warmth_n for_o without_o they_o i_o shall_v suffer_v some_o cold_a in_o my_o external_a part_n and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n though_o our_o comfort_n do_v not_o original_o arise_v from_o our_o obedience_n yet_o our_o obedience_n keep_v our_o comfort_n warm_a the_o more_o we_o compass_v ourselves_o about_o with_o obedience_n the_o more_o we_o heap_v up_o thing_n and_o do_v they_o according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o god_n word_n and_o our_o conscience_n the_o more_o we_o abound_v in_o these_o thing_n the_o more_o we_o keep_v our_o comfort_n warm_a out_o of_o what_o fear_n or_o love_n we_o do_v they_o to_o god_n there_o be_v the_o vital_a
