finger_n of_o god_n cast_v out_o devil_n by_o who_o do_v your_o child_n cast_v they_o out_o last_o this_o may_v also_o appear_v by_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o mean_n which_o the_o lord_n use_v in_o work_v of_o miracle_n as_o the_o shadow_n of_o peter_n to_o cure_v disease_n can_v any_o man_n shadow_n cure_v another_o no_o but_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v that_o this_o mean_n shall_v show_v that_o the_o thing_n be_v wrought_v by_o his_o power_n so_o the_o handkerchief_n of_o paul_n do_v cure_v disease_n not_o that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o virtue_n in_o it_o but_o that_o it_o come_v from_o the_o lord_n so_o also_o do_v the_o hem_n of_o christ_n garment_n be_v there_o any_o power_n in_o the_o hem_n of_o a_o man_n garment_n to_o cure_v disease_n sure_o no_o but_o the_o lord_n use_v that_o mean_n to_o teach_v we_o thereby_o that_o his_o power_n only_o do_v work_v it_o here_o than_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v that_o miracle_n be_v wrought_v only_o by_o the_o lord_n and_o serve_v great_o to_o the_o advance_v of_o his_o glory_n last_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o a_o miracle_n be_v contrary_a to_o the_o instinct_n of_o nature_n nature_n have_v never_o any_o such_o inclination_n as_o to_o bring_v to_o pass_v any_o miracle_n as_o when_o the_o water_n stand_v on_o two_o part_n nature_n have_v a_o desire_n to_o make_v the_o water_n run_v when_o as_o then_o the_o water_n stand_v it_o be_v contrary_a to_o nature_n the_o use_n the_o use_n that_o we_o must_v make_v hereof_o be_v to_o give_v to_o god_n that_o which_o be_v his_o own_o that_o we_o shall_v acknowledge_v he_o to_o be_v the_o sole_a author_n and_o worker_n of_o miracle_n that_o either_o have_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v in_o the_o world_n if_o thou_o give_v they_o to_o satan_n than_o do_v likewise_o in_o the_o work_n of_o some_o miracle_n it_o please_v he_o not_o to_o admit_v the_o use_n of_o any_o creature_n whatsoever_o as_o when_o he_o stay_v the_o sun_n in_o the_o firmament_n he_o work_v they_o indeed_o but_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o moses_n and_o aaron_n he_o divide_v the_o red_a sea_n so_o that_o israel_n pass_v through_o on_o dry_a foot_n but_o it_o be_v do_v by_o moses_n so_o also_o he_o wrought_v many_o miracle_n in_o the_o wilderness_n before_o the_o isralite_n but_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o moses_n and_o aaron_n so_o some_o miracle_n be_v do_v by_o judge_n some_o by_o elizaeus_n and_o other_o of_o the_o prophet_n so_o also_o god_n wrought_v miracle_n afterward_o not_o only_o by_o his_o son_n but_o also_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o apostle_n so_o that_o it_o be_v a_o true_a point_n of_o religion_n to_o hold_v that_o the_o lord_n in_o work_v of_o miracle_n do_v oftentimes_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o man_n therein_o in_o this_o doctrine_n we_o be_v to_o take_v heed_n of_o these_o two_o dangerous_a point_n first_o that_o we_o derogate_v nothing_o from_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n although_o he_o use_v mean_n in_o the_o work_n of_o many_o miracle_n second_o that_o we_o do_v not_o magnify_v the_o creature_n which_o the_o lord_n use_v above_o that_o which_o be_v convenient_a into_o which_o many_o have_v fall_v heretofore_o for_o the_o avoid_n therefore_o of_o they_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o hold_v these_o two_o point_n of_o religion_n first_o to_o believe_v and_o know_v that_o the_o omnipotent_a power_n of_o god_n can_v be_v communicate_v to_o any_o creature_n for_o the_o lord_n say_v as_o of_o his_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o mercy_n so_o also_o of_o his_o power_n i_o will_v not_o give_v my_o glory_n to_o another_o we_o be_v therefore_o to_o hold_v that_o the_o power_n of_o god_n can_v beseem_v any_o creature_n whatsoever_o no_o though_o it_o be_v a_o angel_n of_o heaven_n second_o that_o we_o must_v know_v remember_v and_o constant_o believe_v that_o albeit_o the_o power_n of_o god_n can_v be_v communicate_v to_o any_o creature_n either_o in_o heaven_n or_o in_o earth_n yet_o that_o there_o be_v no_o creature_n capable_a thereof_o no_o creature_n be_v able_a to_o bear_v it_o this_o be_v evident_a in_o the_o example_n of_o peter_n before_o who_o when_o christ_n have_v wrought_v a_o miracle_n and_o he_o have_v see_v some_o small_a sight_n of_o his_o glory_n he_o say_v depart_v from_o i_o lord_n for_o i_o be_o a_o sinful_a man_n if_o peter_n can_v not_o abide_v the_o glimmer_n of_o his_o glory_n and_o if_o it_o bring_v his_o sin_n to_o memory_n insomuch_o that_o he_o think_v himself_o unworthy_a of_o his_o presence_n how_o much_o more_o unable_a have_v he_o be_v to_o bear_v the_o weight_n thereof_o but_o may_n some_o say_v if_o this_o be_v so_o why_o then_o do_v the_o lord_n use_v mean_n in_o work_v of_o miracle_n why_o do_v he_o use_v man_n prophet_n apostle_n yea_o and_o those_o also_o which_o have_v no_o justify_v faith_n and_o also_o other_o creature_n i_o answer_v the_o lord_n use_v they_o not_o because_o he_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o they_o for_o he_o can_v work_v all_o thing_n of_o himself_o neither_o use_v he_o they_o that_o man_n shall_v ascribe_v less_o to_o he_o and_o more_o to_o the_o creature_n which_o he_o use_v but_o for_o to_o teach_v we_o these_o three_o thing_n first_o to_o sinai_n to_o hear_v the_o lord_n there_o be_v such_o thunder_n and_o lightning_n and_o the_o sound_n of_o a_o trumpet_n exceed_a loud_a and_o the_o mount_n all_o of_o a_o smoke_n because_o the_o lord_n come_v down_o by_o fire_n they_o be_v so_o bereave_v of_o their_o sense_n and_o be_v so_o afraid_a that_o afterward_o they_o
desire_v the_o lord_n not_o to_o speak_v to_o they_o himself_o any_o more_o but_o that_o they_o may_v have_v moses_n to_o speak_v unto_o they_o and_o they_o will_v hear_v he_o three_o the_o lord_n use_v mean_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o our_o faith_n of_o our_o religion_n and_o conscience_n whether_o we_o will_v ascribe_v the_o work_n that_o be_v wrought_v to_o the_o worker_n thereof_o or_o to_o the_o mean_n or_o partly_o to_o the_o worker_n and_o partly_o to_o the_o mean_n or_o as_o some_o do_v all_o to_o the_o mean_n and_o none_o to_o the_o worker_n the_o lord_n try_v whether_o we_o will_v be_v constant_a to_o ascribe_v the_o power_n that_o be_v in_o miracle_n unto_o his_o majesty_n for_o in_o the_o miracle_n of_o christ_n we_o see_v how_o diverse_o they_o be_v expound_v albeit_o they_o work_n of_o the_o miracle_n such_o be_v the_o hem_n of_o christ_n garment_n the_o hem_n of_o a_o garment_n have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o appearance_n that_o it_o shall_v heal_v any_o that_o be_v disease_v such_o be_v the_o handkerchief_n of_o paul_n to_o cure_v disease_n what_o be_v handkerchief_n or_o swaddle_a clout_n as_o we_o may_v aswell_o say_v for_o the_o cure_n of_o disease_n such_o make_v and_o lay_v upon_o his_o eye_n this_o christ_n who_o be_v god_n and_o man_n use_v though_o it_o seem_v to_o contain_v in_o it_o a_o natural_a hindrance_n to_o the_o miracle_n these_o three_o sort_n of_o mean_n the_o lord_n use_v to_o teach_v we_o three_o notable_a point_n first_o he_o use_v the_o first_o mean_n to_o try_v the_o truth_n of_o our_o faith_n to_o see_v whether_o we_o be_v so_o firm_a in_o faith_n and_o whether_o we_o will_v so_o whole_o rely_v upon_o he_o as_o that_o he_o will_v give_v all_o glory_n to_o he_o for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o miracle_n though_o the_o mean_n use_v do_v seem_v to_o have_v some_o power_n of_o bring_v it_o to_o pass_v we_o must_v therefore_o learn_v to_o give_v all_o glory_n to_o the_o lord_n whatsoever_o second_o the_o second_o sort_n of_o mean_n that_o the_o lord_n use_v be_v to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v he_o alone_o that_o work_v miracle_n and_o not_o the_o creature_n which_o be_v use_v his_o sole_a omnipotent_a power_n do_v work_v it_o let_v the_o mean_n do_v or_o be_v what_o it_o will_v whether_o it_o be_v any_o creature_n whatsoev_a or_o no_o creature_n as_o be_v the_o shadow_n of_o peter_n which_o be_v nothing_o but_o the_o absence_n of_o light_n let_v we_o acknowledge_v the_o lord_n to_o be_v the_o only_a cause_n and_o worker_n of_o the_o miracle_n three_o the_o three_o sort_n of_o mean_n teach_v we_o to_o give_v nothing_o to_o the_o creature_n itself_o which_o be_v use_v which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o opinion_n of_o many_o superstitious_a people_n and_o contrary_a to_o all_o conjurer_n sorcerer_n or_o caster_n of_o figure_n satan_n make_v they_o to_o think_v that_o the_o miracle_n be_v bring_v to_o pass_v by_o he_o or_o the_o mean_n which_o he_o appoint_v and_o not_o by_o the_o power_n of_o god._n but_o we_o must_v acknowlegde_v that_o all_o creature_n whatsoev_a that_o albeit_o the_o power_n of_o angel_n be_v great_a yet_o if_o all_o these_o be_v join_v together_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o work_v the_o least_o miracle_n that_o can_v be_v this_o doctrine_n have_v singular_a use_n first_o it_o teach_v we_o what_o a_o miracle_n be_v second_o what_o a_o miracle_n be_v not_o as_o all_o manner_n of_o appearance_n be_v no_o miracle_n whether_o they_o be_v illusion_n of_o satan_n or_o proceed_v from_o the_o deceit_n subtlety_n and_o agility_n of_o man_n none_o of_o they_o be_v miracle_n so_o the_o preservation_n of_o mankind_n albeit_o it_o be_v a_o true_a work_n wrought_v by_o god_n only_o yet_o because_o it_o be_v a_o true_a usual_a and_o ordinary_a work_n it_o be_v no_o miracle_n for_o every_o miracle_n be_v a_o rare_a work_n of_o god_n three_o it_o teach_v we_o that_o no_o work_n be_v a_o miracle_n which_o can_v be_v feel_v smell_v or_o perceive_v by_o some_o of_o the_o sense_n when_o man_n therefore_o hold_v we_o in_o hand_n that_o there_o be_v a_o miracle_n yet_o if_o we_o can_v see_v any_o thing_n feel_v smell_v or_o taste_v therefore_o of_o his_o nature_n his_o knowledge_n be_v great_a secondary_o the_o measure_n of_o his_o knowledge_n may_v be_v discern_v by_o his_o creation_n god_n create_v he_o a_o good_a angel_n and_o give_v he_o the_o same_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n that_o he_o give_v to_o other_o angel_n look_v therefore_o what_o knowledge_n be_v in_o a_o good_a angel_n by_o creation_n the_o same_o knowledge_n be_v in_o satan_n by_o his_o creation_n it_o may_v be_v that_o he_o retain_v still_o that_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n which_o he_o then_o receive_v albeit_o as_o it_o may_v be_v think_v that_o as_o man_n by_o his_o fall_n lose_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o that_o knowledge_n which_o he_o have_v by_o his_o creation_n so_o the_o devil_n lose_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o his_o knowledge_n by_o his_o apostasy_n from_o the_o lord_n further_o it_o be_v to_o be_v know_v that_o the_o devil_n be_v now_o fall_v be_v not_o of_o the_o consultation_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o the_o good_a angel_n be_v for_o they_o stand_v always_o before_o his_o face_n ready_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o he_o shall_v command_v they_o for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o elect_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v of_o the_o consultation_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o satan_n be_v not_o so_o and_o therefore_o he_o can_v have_v so_o great_a knowledge_n as_o they_o have_v which_o be_v a_o great_a comfort_n to_o those_o that_o be_v the_o true_a child_n of_o god_n that_o the_o good_a angel_n by_o the_o measure_n of_o their_o knowledge_n be_v more_o able_a to_o save_v and_o defend_v we_o than_o the_o devil_n be_v by_o the_o measure_n of_o his_o knowledge_n to_o harm_v us._n three_o the_o devil_n since_o his_o fall_n have_v increase_v his_o knowledge_n both_o on_o the_o thing_n on_o earth_n and_o of_o the_o way_n of_o god_n by_o long_a observation_n and_o continual_a experience_n who_o have_v always_o have_v experimental_a knowledge_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n for_o he_o be_v well_o acquaint_v
with_o the_o age_n of_o man_n he_o know_v what_o be_v their_o affection_n what_o be_v their_o nature_n and_o what_o be_v their_o disposition_n he_o know_v what_o thing_n be_v offensive_a to_o man_n he_o know_v also_o what_o please_v they_o best_o in_o their_o young_a age_n what_o in_o their_o middle_a age_n and_o what_o in_o their_o old_a age_n and_o as_o in_o these_o thing_n so_o also_o have_v he_o experience_n in_o supernatural_a thing_n for_o he_o remember_v by_o who_o he_o have_v be_v resist_v and_o who_o will_v not_o yield_v to_o he_o this_o than_o must_v great_o amplify_v his_o knowledge_n see_v he_o have_v always_o have_v such_o long_a experience_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o come_v to_o pass_v as_o put_v the_o case_n there_o be_v one_o man_n alive_a which_o be_v perfect_a in_o sense_n in_o body_n in_o mind_n in_o reason_n and_o memory_n and_o in_o all_o the_o faculty_n both_o of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o mind_n that_o have_v live_v from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n unto_o this_o day_n and_o have_v observe_v all_o thing_n that_o have_v fall_v out_o heretofore_o this_o man_n will_v tell_v such_o wonderful_a thing_n both_o past_a and_o to_o come_v by_o can_v tell_v that_o best_a if_o you_o speak_v of_o a_o astrologer_n he_o be_v most_o cunning_a there_o in_o yea_o that_o which_o man_n guess_v at_o and_o as_o it_o be_v grope_v at_o in_o the_o dark_a he_o behold_v and_o know_v most_o certain_o and_o can_v tell_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v to_o come_v to_o pass_v by_o the_o course_n of_o the_o star_n and_o other_o natural_a cause_n if_o we_o speak_v of_o knowledge_n in_o the_o art_n there_o be_v none_o comparable_a to_o he_o he_o be_v most_o skilful_a in_o all_o the_o tongue_n and_o there_o be_v no_o time_n that_o be_v hide_v from_o he_o so_o that_o by_o these_o mean_v he_o have_v wonderful_o increase_v his_o knowledge_n but_o some_o may_v say_v have_v he_o knowledge_n in_o any_o thing_n in_o which_o the_o good_a angel_n have_v no_o knowledge_n no_o for_o they_o be_v as_o diligent_a for_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o godly_a as_o he_o be_v for_o their_o destruction_n psal_n 91._o 11._o god_n give_v his_o angel_n charge_v to_o keep_v christ_n and_o all_o that_o be_v he_o in_o all_o their_o way_n nay_o they_o pitch_v their_o tent_n about_o he_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n to_o keep_v he_o on_o every_o side_n that_o no_o a_o familiar_a spirit_n he_o shall_v die_v which_o law_n have_v be_v in_o vain_a if_o none_o have_v consult_v familiar_o with_o he_o so_o he_o be_v a_o liar_n
