you_o be_v in_o christ_n you_o may_v know_v that_o the_o promise_n be_v you_o otherwise_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o know_v your_o right_n in_o christ_n by_o your_o right_n in_o the_o promise_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o turn_v they_o upside_o down_o beyond_o the_o scope_n and_o intendment_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n we_o may_v take_v occasion_n by_o they_o to_o admire_v the_o goodness_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n as_o david_n do_v psal_n 31.19_o thus_o ought_v we_o to_o consider_v of_o they_o and_o whither_o to_o look_v that_o we_o may_v enjoy_v they_o and_o the_o blessing_n in_o they_o if_o you_o shall_v say_v we_o have_v be_v convert_v and_o have_v have_v gracious_a change_n wrought_v in_o we_o be_v not_o deceive_v such_o work_n may_v reach_v no_o far_o than_o conviction_n and_o you_o may_v come_v to_o turn_v your_o back_n upon_o jesus_n christ_n consider_v therefore_o do_v ever_o the_o lord_n give_v himself_o to_o be_v one_o with_o you_o whensoever_o the_o lord_n do_v strike_v up_o the_o bond_n of_o union_n it_o be_v in_o a_o free_a promise_n of_o his_o grace_n trust_v
not_o therefore_o upon_o every_o lean_v of_o your_o soul_n upon_o conditional_a promise_n for_o so_o you_o may_v build_v upon_o a_o covenant_n make_v upon_o a_o work_n and_o so_o you_o and_o your_o covenant_n may_v fail_v together_o but_o when_o you_o read_v how_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v such_o promise_n to_o such_o and_o such_o qualification_n then_o consider_v that_o those_o thing_n be_v indeed_o requisite_a to_o be_v find_v in_o you_o but_o who_o be_v there_o in_o heaven_n or_o earth_n that_o can_v work_v they_o in_o you_o there_o be_v none_o but_o jesus_n christ_n and_o unless_o you_o have_v he_o to_o be_v in_o you_o you_o can_v have_v any_o of_o these_o thing_n wrought_v in_o you_o but_o will_v a_o poor_a soul_n say_v i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o reach_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n therefore_o all_o the_o promise_n do_v fall_v heavy_a upon_o a_o man_n and_o he_o see_v that_o they_o be_v too_o burdensome_a and_o too_o weighty_a for_o he_o he_o do_v not_o say_v here_o be_v the_o qualification_n and_o here_o be_v the_o blessing_n promise_v to_o it_o and_o therefore_o i_o will_v take_v it_o to_o myself_o but_o one_o that_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n do_v forthwith_o go_v and_o pray_v unto_o god_n that_o he_o will_v set_v he_o in_o the_o way_n of_o those_o blessing_n and_o that_o so_o he_o will_v make_v he_o partaker_n of_o they_o he_o pray_v that_o god_n will_v give_v he_o his_o son_n and_o that_o he_o will_v adorn_v he_o with_o his_o grace_n as_o a_o bride_n of_o jesus_n christ_n thus_o while_o the_o soul_n do_v look_v towards_o jesus_n christ_n and_o grace_n in_o he_o the_o lord_n do_v secret_o transform_v he_o into_o the_o image_n of_o christ_n by_o work_v such_o qualification_n in_o he_o and_o then_o bear_v witness_n to_o that_o sanctification_n which_o be_v wrought_v in_o his_o heart_n thereby_o enlarge_a his_o soul_n with_o strong_a consolation_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o in_o the_o same_o way_n it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v strengthen_v the_o faith_n of_o his_o people_n to_o believe_v that_o all_o those_o thing_n which_o god_n have_v promise_v be_v accomplish_v in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o law_n fullfil_v in_o i_o so_o far_o as_o christ_n be_v in_o i_o and_o therefore_o i_o come_v unto_o god_n in_o prayer_n to_o make_v good_a those_o promise_n unto_o i_o in_o a_o right_a way_n which_o will_v have_v be_v preposterous_o apply_v before_o christ_n be_v give_v and_o this_o may_v serve_v for_o answer_n to_o the_o 5_o question_n quest_n 6._o we_o come_v now_o unto_o a_o sixth_o question_n if_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v himself_o first_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o his_o grace_n this_o may_v then_o be_v a_o doubt_n and_o a_o question_n in_o a_o christian_a soul_n if_o god_n give_v himself_o before_o any_o blessing_n before_o any_o promise_n in_o order_n of_o nature_n though_o he_o give_v himself_o always_o in_o a_o promise_n if_o we_o can_v claim_v any_o blessing_n from_o god_n at_o the_o first_o in_o any_o conditional_a promise_n therefore_o not_o by_o any_o condition_n in_o ourselves_o but_o as_o we_o receive_v all_o thing_n from_o god_n so_o we_o claim_v all_o thing_n from_o he_o in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o do_v first_o seek_v for_o he_o and_o for_o all_o thing_n in_o he_o if_o thus_o to_o what_o use_n then_o serve_v the_o law_n of_o god_n which_o require_v such_o and_o such_o condition_n in_o we_o do_v we_o not_o abrogate_v the_o law_n &_o make_v it_o of_o none_o effect_n and_o root_v it_o out_o from_o have_v any_o power_n over_o christian_n and_o true_o some_o under_o pretence_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n have_v think_v it_o altogether_o bootless_a to_o bind_v christian_n unto_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o to_o look_v at_o it_o as_o any_o part_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o their_o course_n now_o because_o this_o be_v a_o imputation_n usual_o reflect_v upon_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n let_v we_o confider_v therefore_o and_o inquire_v to_o what_o use_n serve_v the_o law_n of_o god_n if_o god_n give_v himself_o first_o unto_o his_o people_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o his_o grace_n answ_n though_o the_o lord_n give_v himself_o free_o to_o the_o soul_n and_o his_o son_n and_o all_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n without_o respect_n unto_o any_o work_n of_o the_o law_n yet_o the_o law_n be_v of_o special_a and_o notable_a use_n unto_o all_o the_o son_n of_o man_n both_o unto_o they_o that_o be_v not_o yet_o bring_v home_o unto_o god_n by_o convert_v grace_n and_o also_o to_o those_o that_o be_v regenerate_v in_o jesus_n christ_n the_o apostle_n paul_n do_v observe_v that_o the_o question_n will_v arise_v upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n gal._n 3.16,17,18_o for_o if_o the_o blessing_n of_o abraham_n come_v upon_o the_o people_n of_o god_n by_o jesus_n christ_n to_o what_o end_n then_o serve_v the_o law_n which_o come_v 430_o year_n after_o it_o can_v disannul_v grace_n to_o make_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n of_o none_o effect_v to_o what_o end_n then_o serve_v it_o some_o say_v it_o be_v of_o no_o use_n other_o say_v that_o it_o be_v of_o such_o use_n that_o they_o have_v will_v in_o the_o end_n final_o perish_v and_o the_o law_n be_v yet_o of_o use_n unto_o both_o sort_n of_o they_o for_o the_o elect_n it_o be_v of_o use_n unto_o they_o to_o aggravate_v their_o sin_n and_o to_o multiply_v it_o unto_o they_o as_o it_o be_v that_o be_v to_o say_v to_o aggravate_v the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o heinousness_n of_o sin_n upon_o their_o conscience_n and_o to_o set_v home_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n unto_o their_o soul_n thereby_o to_o drive_v they_o to_o feel_v their_o great_a need_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n who_o otherwise_o they_o shall_v for_o ever_o have_v despise_v thus_o the_o apostle_n answer_v in_o the_o place_n aforenamed_a the_o law_n be_v add_v because_o of_o transgression_n that_o they_o may_v clear_o appear_v and_o be_v aggravate_v through_o fear_n unto_o jesus_n christ_n not_o that_o it_o do_v reveal_v christ_n a_o saviour_n of_o freegrace_n but_o the_o soul_n be_v once_o bring_v down_o under_o sense_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n will_v ready_o &_o willing_o hearken_v unto_o the_o news_n of_o christ_n a_o saviour_n for_o be_v once_o make_v sensible_a of_o his_o own_o inability_n to_o redeem_v himself_o and_o unworthines_n to_o be_v redeem_v from_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n now_o be_v the_o soul_n fit_v to_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o be_v the_o news_n of_o christ_n beautiful_a and_o glad_a tiding_n and_o of_o this_o use_n be_v the_o law_n unto_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n before_o they_o come_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n 2._o but_o of_o what_o use_n be_v the_o law_n unto_o other_o man_n first_o the_o disobedience_n of_o it_o be_v of_o use_n second_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o 1._o the_o disobedience_n for_o if_o man_n have_v not_o know_v sin_n it_o have_v be_v some_o pretence_n though_o they_o have_v commit_v sin_n but_o when_o man_n have_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o law_n and_o yet_o commit_v sin_n willing_o now_o they_o have_v no_o cloak_n for_o their_o sin_n rom._n 1.21_o compare_v with_o 32._o where_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o great_a sin_n of_o the_o gentile_n and_o much_o more_o of_o the_o jew_n who_o make_v this_o his_o universal_a life_n i_o live_v by_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o i_o be_o able_a to_o do_v all_o thing_n through_o christ_n which_o strengthen_v i_o phi._n 4.13_o most_o fail_v be_v in_o that_o grace_n wherein_o she_o most_o abound_v and_o though_o every_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v of_o great_a force_n when_o the_o lord_n do_v act_n and_o move_v it_o yet_o let_v a_o man_n go_v forth_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o his_o great_a gift_n and_o if_o ever_o his_o heart_n fail_v he_o it_o will_v be_v in_o they_o think_v not_o when_o you_o have_v do_v all_o follow_v upon_o the_o gift_n be_v grace_n also_o and_o suppose_v that_o we_o have_v attain_v all_o that_o we_o pray_v for_o shall_v we_o then_o exalt_v our_o own_o gift_n no_o but_o let_v we_o say_v with_o jacob_n i_o be_o less_o than_o the_o least_o of_o all_o the_o mercy_n and_o truth_n which_o thou_o have_v show_v unto_o thy_o servant_n do_v not_o trust_v as_o not_o upon_o gift_n nor_o upon_o duty_n perform_v by_o those_o gift_n to_o reach_v the_o blessing_n so_o look_v not_o for_o your_o justification_n from_o thence_o at_o all_o for_o the_o apostle_n be_v plain_a that_o he_o look_v not_o for_o any_o thing_n for_o his_o righteousness_n before_o his_o conversion_n and_o after_o his_o conversion_n he_o count_v it_o all_o as_o dross_n and_o dung_n that_o he_o may_v win_v christ_n phil._n flow_v from_o their_o faith_n they_o make_v use_v of_o the_o testimony_n of_o their_o holiness_n when_o they_o see_v christ_n in_o it_o and_o faith_n in_o it_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n carry_v they_o along_o in_o the_o way_n and_o duty_n thereof_o thus_o they_o see_v their_o holiness_n and_o take_v comfort_n in_o it_o &_o from_o the_o witness_n of_o it_o as_o that_o by_o which_o the_o lord_n dispense_v comfort_n unto_o his_o people_n when_o they_o receive_v it_o from_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n &_o by_o faith_n in_o he_o by_o which_o they_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n to_o carry_v a_o ground_n and_o as_o much_o upon_o this_o ground_n as_o upon_o any_o for_o when_o christian_n come_v to_o be_v real_o wrought_v upon_o and_o find_v themselves_o discourage_v from_o sin_n and_o so_o reform_v their_o life_n and_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o obey_v the_o word_n and_o find_v comfort_n therein_o and_o great_a consolation_n many_o time_n in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o christian_n do_v much_o differ_v upon_o the_o point_n yet_o i_o do_v not_o know_v any_o of_o all_o the_o teacher_n in_o the_o country_n that_o withdraw_v their_o consent_n from_o this_o doctrine_n that_o such_o sanctification_n as_o be_v wrought_v in_o hypocrite_n though_o it_o may_v reach_v to_o great_a improvement_n yet_o it_o be_v no_o evidence_n of_o justification_n at_o all_o and_o it_o have_v be_v handle_v in_o another_o congregation_n and_o i_o think_v not_o without_o weight_n of_o truth_n that_o to_o distinguish_v in_o man_n between_o that_o sanctification_n which_o flow_v from_o the_o law_n and_o that_o which_o be_v of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o matter_n so_o narrow_a that_o the_o angel_n in_o heaven_n have_v much_o ado_n to_o discern_v who_o differ_v a_o work_n fit_a for_o angel_n to_o cut_v the_o scantling_n in_o it_o then_o for_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n though_o indeed_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n of_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o now_o though_o this_o do_v not_o tend_v to_o heal_v any_o difference_n in_o judgement_n yet_o it_o be_v useful_a to_o heal_v a_o misprision_n of_o sanctification_n that_o may_v be_v find_v in_o all_o hypocrite_n of_o this_o country_n and_o elsewhere_o three_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v attain_v unto_o in_o all_o sanctification_n 1_o from_o what_o root_n it_o spring_v 2_o by_o what_o rule_v it_o be_v guide_v 3_o at_o what_o end_v it_o aim_v and_o common_o under_o one_o or_o other_o of_o these_o three_o be_v put_v all_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o one_o sanctification_n and_o the_o other_o i_o speak_v it_o that_o it_o may_v be_v search_v and_o god_n be_v my_o witness_n not_o to_o unsettle_v the_o well-grounded_n comfort_n of_o any_o soul_n but_o if_o any_o have_v build_v upon_o a_o unsafe_a ground_n or_o have_v build_v hay_n or_o stubble_n better_o it_o be_v to_o know_v it_o at_o first_o whilst_o there_o be_v hope_n in_o israel_n than_o when_o it_o be_v too_o late_o in_o those_o three_o thing_n former_o mention_v be_v all_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o sanctification_n of_o hypocrite_n and_o of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o they_o go_v so_o close_o together_o that_o you_o will_v say_v it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o discern_v justification_n by_o sanctification_n 1_o for_o the_o root_n of_o it_o the_o soul_n have_v fellowship_n with_o christ_n the_o holy_a ghost_n come_v into_o the_o soul_n &_o work_v faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o this_o be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o christian_a sanctification_n ezek._n 36.27_o and_o for_o faith_n it_o be_v that_o which_o purify_v the_o heart_n act_v 15.9_o &_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n heb._n 11.6_o so_o that_o faith_n must_v concur_v unto_o the_o rootednesse_n of_o our_o they_o come_v to_o be_v press_v with_o the_o power_n of_o their_o corruption_n special_o when_o they_o compare_v with_o such_o hypocrite_n as_o run_v away_o with_o more_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n than_o themselves_o for_o sometime_o their_o corruption_n do_v less_o appear_v and_o they_o be_v more_o free_a from_o temptation_n and_o not_o expose_v to_o such_o sinful_a course_n which_o sometime_o true_a heart_a christian_n be_v subject_a unto_o so_o a_o poor_a christian_a be_v discourage_v &_o a_o hypocrite_n embolden_v see_v himself_o more_o sanctify_v than_o the_o other_o in_o view_n prop._n 3._o that_o true_a sanctification_n of_o a_o sincere_a christian_a be_v not_o discern_v by_o he_o nor_o be_v indeed_o discernible_a until_o he_o first_o discern_v his_o justify_n faith_n a_o double_a ground_n of_o it_o &_o so_o leave_v it_o to_o your_o christian_n disquisition_n and_o search_n they_o be_v both_o take_v from_o the_o necessity_n of_o faith_n both_o to_o the_o acceptance_n of_o a_o strength_n and_o grace_n and_o life_n from_o christ_n or_o else_o he_o can_v approve_v his_o sanctification_n to_o be_v the_o sanctification_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o as_o there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a sanctification_n unless_o there_o be_v faith_n whereby_o the_o person_n be_v accept_v and_o whereby_o life_n be_v receive_v to_o act_v in_o all_o sanctification_n so_o there_o can_v be_v no_o knowledge_n of_o sanctification_n but_o there_o must_v be_v knowledge_n of_o faith_n whereby_o a_o man_n person_n be_v accept_v &_o whereby_o strength_n be_v convey_v to_o sanctification_n for_o if_o a_o poor_a soul_n be_v doubtful_a of_o his_o acceptance_n with_o the_o lord_n he_o be_v where_o he_o be_v notwithstanding_o his_o sanctification_n and_o want_v comfort_n for_o this_o doubt_n remain_v whether_o he_o be_v accept_v or_o no_o which_o until_o the_o lord_n do_v manifest_v a_o man_n faith_n unto_o he_o by_o the_o revelation_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n he_o be_v still_o at_o a_o loss_n in_o it_o for_o though_o true_a sanctification_n be_v a_o evidence_n of_o a_o man_n justification_n yet_o itself_o must_v be_v first_o evident_a thus_o we_o see_v by_o this_o three_o exposition_n that_o a_o further_a light_n be_v require_v to_o the_o light_n of_o sanctification_n prop._n 4._o notwithstanding_o this_o near_a resemblance_n between_o legal_a and_o evangelical_a holiness_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o real_a difference_n between_o they_o and_o such_o a_o difference_n as_o be_v discernible_a to_o christian_n who_o wite_v be_v exercise_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o himself_o more_o full_o than_o he_o speak_v more_o plain_o and_o give_v himself_o not_o in_o a_o future_a but_o in_o a_o present_a promise_n and_o now_o the_o soul_n see_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v
