will_v show_v what_o this_o true_a sight_n of_o sin_n be_v second_o i_o will_v show_v the_o reason_n why_o there_o must_v be_v a_o true_a sight_n of_o sin_n before_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v break_v for_o it_o three_o i_o will_v make_v use_n of_o the_o point_n first_o it_o be_v not_o every_o sight_n of_o sin_n will_v serve_v the_o turn_n nor_o every_o apprehension_n of_o a_o man_n vileness_n be_v meditation_n must_v be_v raise_v and_o they_o i_o refer_v to_o these_o four_o head_n first_o labour_v to_o see_v the_o mercy_n goodness_n and_o patience_n of_o god_n that_o have_v be_v abuse_v and_o despise_v by_o that_o unkind_a deal_n of_o we_o and_o that_o marvellous_a carelessness_n those_o duty_n god_n have_v require_v of_o we_o the_o height_n of_o god_n goodness_n to_o we_o lay_v out_o the_o height_n of_o all_o our_o iniquity_n commit_v the_o great_a the_o kindness_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n be_v the_o great_a be_v our_o sin_n that_o esteem_v not_o of_o this_o mercy_n but_o abuse_v will_v not_o meddle_v with_o that_o for_o that_o be_v proper_a to_o carnal_a man_n second_o if_o the_o soul_n will_v not_o seek_v out_o to_o christ_n for_o help_n and_o comfort_n it_o be_v because_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o content_a in_o good_a earnest_n to_o be_v rule_v by_o christ_n that_o christ_n shall_v come_v and_o take_v possession_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o do_v all_o therefore_o if_o the_o heart_n cling_v to_o corruption_n it_o be_v content_a that_o christ_n shall_v ease_v it_o but_o not_o that_o christ_n shall_v sanctify_v it_o and_o remove_v that_o corruption_n that_o have_v heart_a one_o too_o they_o dare_v not_o go_v to_o expect_v mercy_n from_o the_o lord_n jesus_n why_o why_o because_o they_o be_v unworthy_a so_o abominable_a their_o life_n so_o wretched_a their_o course_n that_o they_o dare_v not_o go_v to_o christ_n that_o he_o may_v show_v mercy_n to_o they_o i_o reason_v the_o point_n thus_o be_v it_o because_o of_o your_o unworthiness_n that_o you_o dare_v not_o go_v to_o christ_n so_o then_o if_o you_o have_v worthiness_n this_o will_v encourage_v you_o for_o to_o go_v why_o then_o you_o think_v christ_n be_v not_o able_a alone_o to_o help_v you_o but_o you_o will_v have_v your_o worthiness_n help_n christ_n to_o save_v you_o and_o so_o you_o will_v join_v with_o the_o lord_n jesus_n in_o this_o great_a price_n of_o salvation_n and_o redemption_n if_o your_o sin_n be_v but_o small_a and_o you_o have_v some_o worthiness_n that_o so_o christ_n may_v do_v something_o and_o your_o worthiness_n do_v something_o and_o so_o you_o may_v make_v up_o the_o price_n between_o you_o than_o you_o can_v be_v content_a to_o go_v to_o christ_n but_o otherwise_o you_o think_v you_o may_v not_o go_v to_o christ_n without_o some_o worthiness_n of_o your_o own_o again_o why_o then_o belike_o you_o 〈◊〉_d be_v behold_v to_o christ_n for_o so_o much_o mercy_n and_o so_o much_o grace_n and_o so_o much_o forgiveness_n one_o of_o these_o two_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o this_o complaint_n either_o we_o will_v have_v our_o own_o worthiness_n join_v something_o with_o christ_n or_o else_o we_o be_v so_o vile_a that_o we_o will_v not_o be_v behold_v to_o christ_n for_o so_o much_o mercy_n but_o this_o unworthiness_n indeed_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o pride_n a_o man_n will_v not_o be_v behold_v to_o christ_n for_o so_o much_o mercy_n but_o he_o will_v share_v with_o christ_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o salvation_n or_o else_o he_o will_v not_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o great_a work_n of_o redemption_n imagine_v a_o debtor_n be_v in_o prison_n and_o a_o friend_n send_v to_o he_o what_o ever_o the_o debt_n be_v if_o he_o will_v but_o come_v to_o he_o he_o will_v pay_v all_o the_o man_n return_v this_o answer_n if_o he_o have_v not_o such_o a_o great_a debt_n to_o pay_v he_o will_v be_v content_a to_o come_v to_o he_o but_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o debt_n be_v so_o great_a that_o he_o will_v not_o come_v to_o he_o nor_o trouble_v he_o now_o one_o of_o these_o two_o must_v needs_o follow_v either_o he_o think_v his_o friend_n be_v not_o able_a or_o willing_a to_o pay_v his_o debt_n or_o else_o in_o truth_n he_o will_v not_o be_v behold_v to_o he_o for_o so_o much_o but_o if_o the_o debt_n be_v a_o little_a one_o than_o he_o will_v make_v a_o shift_n to_o pay_v some_o and_o his_o friend_n some_o and_o so_o they_o will_v make_v up_o the_o debt_n between_o they_o so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n this_o be_v that_o which_o keep_v the_o heart_n from_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o promise_n they_o think_v they_o be_v unworthy_a to_o partake_v thereof_o which_o be_v nothing_o but_o pride_n of_o spirit_n for_o either_o they_o will_v bring_v something_o and_o share_v with_o christ_n in_o the_o work_n of_o redemption_n or_o else_o they_o will_v not_o be_v behold_v to_o christ_n for_o so_o much_o mercy_n there_o be_v another_o shift_n which_o keep_v the_o heart_n from_o go_v to_o christ_n o_o faith_n one_o i_o never_o have_v my_o heart_n so_o break_v &_o affect_v as_o such_o a_o one_o have_v and_o therefore_o they_o dare_v not_o go_v to_o christ_n because_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o contrition_n their_o heart_n so_o much_o break_v as_o other_o have_v therefore_o they_o dare_v not_o go_v ay_o but_o be_v your_o soul_n content_a to_o go_v to_o christ_n and_o yield_v to_o he_o will_v you_o keep_v any_o corruption_n be_v there_o any_o sin_n which_o you_o will_v not_o have_v christ_n come_v and_o remove_v the_o soul_n answer_v that_o they_o will_v be_v content_a to_o resign_v all_o to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n but_o they_o be_v not_o so_o humble_v as_o other_o be_v i_o say_v the_o ground_n of_o this_o complaint_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o selfe-confidence_n in_o break_a heartedness_n for_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o content_a to_o have_v so_o much_o break_v heartedness_n as_o be_v sufficient_a to_o bring_v a_o man_n to_o christ_n but_o it_o will_v have_v so_o much_o as_o that_o it_o may_v bring_v a_o man_n to_o christ_n to_o help_v he_o in_o the_o work_n of_o redemption_n they_o think_v iâ—_n be_v not_o enough_o to_o have_v the_o soul_n so_o humble_v as_o to_o submit_v to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n but_o they_o will_v have_v so_o much_o as_o they_o will_v join_v with_o christ_n in_o this_o great_a work_n which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o carnal_a so_o though_o a_o man_n corrupt_a heart_n depart_v from_o many_o sin_n &_o scandalous_a abomination_n yet_o if_o he_o keep_v the_o love_n of_o any_o one_o sin_n it_o will_v be_v his_o destruction_n as_o many_o a_o man_n after_o horror_n of_o heart_n have_v have_v a_o love_n after_o some_o base_a lust_n or_o other_o and_o be_v hold_v by_o it_o so_o fast_o that_o he_o can_v never_o be_v ingraft_v into_o the_o lord_n jesus_n this_o one_o lust_n may_v break_v his_o neck_n and_o send_v he_o down_o to_o hell_n so_o then_o if_o the_o soul_n only_o can_v be_v fit_v for_o christ_n by_o â—ound_a sorrow_n than_o this_o must_v needs_o pierce_v the_o heart_n before_o christ_n can_v come_v there_o but_o the_o heart_n can_v be_v fit_v for_o christ_n without_o this_o and_o therefore_o of_o find_v the_o great_a evil_n to_o be_v in_o horror_n and_o vexation_n than_o ease_n and_o quietness_n from_o these_o will_v be_v the_o great_a good_a but_o now_o the_o soul_n see_v grace_n to_o be_v true_o precious_a because_o it_o see_v sin_n to_o be_v true_o vile_a and_o this_o be_v the_o end_n why_o the_o lord_n make_v the_o soul_n see_v the_o vileness_n of_o sin_n that_o the_o heart_n may_v be_v bring_v to_o see_v the_o excellency_n in_o christ_n and_o prize_v he_o above_o all_o now_o there_o be_v two_o question_n to_o be_v answer_v 1._o first_o whether_o this_o sound_a sorrow_n be_v a_o work_n of_o save_a grace_n and_o such_o a_o work_n as_o can_v be_v in_o a_o reprobate_n 2._o second_o whether_o god_n do_v work_v this_o in_o all_o man_n that_o be_v true_o convert_v and_o bring_v home_o to_o christ_n and_o whether_o he_o work_v this_o in_o all_o alike_o or_o no._n answ._n for_o the_o first_o whether_o be_v this_o a_o work_n of_o save_a grace_n yea_o or_o no_o and_o such_o as_o can_v be_v in_o a_o reprobate_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o first_o i_o will_v show_v the_o order_n that_o this_o work_n have_v to_o the_o other_o work_n second_o i_o will_v show_v the_o difference_n of_o this_o from_o sanctify_a sorrow_n and_o yet_o it_o come_v to_o be_v sanctify_a sorrow_n for_o the_o order_n first_o the_o heart_n in_o this_o work_n be_v not_o yet_o conceive_v to_o be_v in_o christ_n but_o only_o to_o be_v fit_v and_o prepare_v for_o christ._n if_o you_o stop_v here_o in_o your_o consideration_n and_o despute_v not_o of_o any_o work_n to_o come_v it_o be_v only_o in_o the_o way_n to_o be_v ingraft_v into_o christ_n but_o so_o that_o undoubted_o that_o soul_n which_o have_v this_o work_n upon_o it_o shall_v have_v faith_n pour_v into_o it_o for_o this_o be_v the_o any_o one_o have_v be_v a_o opposer_n of_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n if_o the_o lord_n shall_v deal_v gentle_o with_o he_o other_o vile_a wretch_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v such_o a_o man_n be_v and_o thy_o heart_n begin_v to_o shake_v in_o the_o consideration_n thereof_o then_o propound_v this_o to_o thy_o own_o heart_n what_o pain_n the_o damn_a in_o hell_n do_v endure_v for_o sin_n and_o thy_o heart_n will_v shake_v and_o quake_v at_o it_o the_o least_o sin_n that_o ever_o thou_o do_v commit_v though_o thou_o make_v a_o light_a matter_n of_o it_o be_v a_o great_a evil_n than_o the_o pain_n of_o the_o damn_a in_o hell_n set_v aside_o their_o sin_n all_o the_o torment_n in_o hell_n be_v not_o so_o great_a a_o evil_a as_o the_o least_o sin_n be_v man_n begin_v to_o shrink_v at_o great_a evil_n reason_n nature_n say_v so_o much_o that_o which_o deprive_v a_o man_n of_o all_o that_o comfort_n and_o happiness_n wherein_o the_o soul_n find_v most_o content_a that_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n of_o all_o but_o sin_n only_o deprive_v a_o man_n of_o the_o great_a good_a for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o have_v a_o heart_n unite_v unto_o god_n and_o to_o have_v fellowship_n with_o he_o to_o have_v he_o &_o salvation_n through_o he_o to_o be_v one_o with_o the_o lord_n this_o be_v the_o chief_a good_a of_o the_o soul_n all_o thing_n here_o below_o be_v make_v for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o body_n be_v make_v for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o soul_n be_v make_v for_o god_n and_o these_o thing_n here_o below_o be_v only_o so_o far_o good_a to_o we_o as_o they_o be_v mean_n to_o make_v we_o enjoy_v a_o near_a communion_n with_o god_n and_o contrary_o riches_n and_o honour_n and_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n be_v as_o so_o many_o curse_n to_o we_o if_o by_o they_o our_o heart_n be_v withdraw_v from_o god_n the_o reason_n why_o god_n be_v estrange_v from_o we_o it_o be_v not_o because_o we_o be_v poor_a or_o pursue_v or_o imprison_v or_o the_o like_a but_o it_o be_v sin_n that_o break_v the_o union_n between_o god_n and_o we_o as_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n say_v your_o sin_n have_v separate_v between_o you_o and_o your_o god_n â—_o now_o that_o which_o separate_v from_o god_n which_o be_v the_o chief_a good_a it_o be_v our_o sin_n it_o be_v not_o punishment_n that_o take_v away_o the_o mercy_n of_o great_a evil_n than_o all_o the_o misery_n of_o the_o damn_a if_o a_o man_n be_v in_o prison_n and_o have_v the_o peace_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n his_o prison_n will_v be_v a_o palace_n unto_o he_o and_o though_o a_o man_n be_v in_o shame_n and_o disgrace_n and_o yet_o have_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n there_o be_v no_o misery_n in_o he_o so_o it_o be_v with_o sin_n if_o no_o man_n suffer_v but_o for_o sin_n than_o sin_n be_v a_o great_a evil_n than_o all_o other_o punishment_n as_o be_v the_o fountain_n from_o whence_o they_o flow_v now_o let_v we_o look_v upon_o sin_n through_o these_o thing_n and_o when_o our_o corrupt_a heart_n provoke_v we_o and_o the_o world_n allure_v we_o &_o the_o devil_n tempt_v we_o to_o take_v any_o contentment_n in_o a_o sinful_a way_n suppose_v we_o see_v hell_n fire_n burn_v before_o we_o and_o the_o pit_n of_o hell_n gape_v to_o swallow_v we_o and_o sin_n entice_v of_o we_o and_o let_v we_o say_v thus_o to_o our_o soul_n it_o be_v better_a for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v cast_v into_o the_o torment_n of_o hell_n among_o the_o damn_a then_o to_o be_v overcome_v with_o any_o sin_n and_o so_o to_o rebel_v against_o the_o lord_n now_o therefore_o if_o those_o plague_n and_o punishment_n make_v the_o soul_n shake_v in_o the_o consideration_n of_o they_o oh_o then_o bless_v thyself_o so_o much_o the_o more_o from_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o
