lest_o my_o soul_n depart_v from_o the_o live_a god_n let_v i_o bring_v a_o live_a service_n to_o he_o i_o must_v not_o bring_v a_o dead_a heart_n let_v i_o take_v heed_n how_o i_o come_v before_o the_o live_a god_n with_o a_o dead_a heart_n and_o with_o a_o dead_a service_n to_o sacrifice_v that_o that_o be_v dead_a before_o it_o come_v it_o be_v like_o a_o carrion_n that_o lie_v dead_a in_o present_v unto_o we_o all_o the_o riches_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o way_n of_o a_o legacy_n and_o in_o the_o administration_n of_o it_o with_o clearness_n and_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n the_o terror_n and_o harshness_n of_o the_o old_a administration_n be_v take_v away_o now_o these_o be_v the_o meditation_n by_o which_o we_o shall_v labour_v to_o sanctify_v our_o heart_n when_o we_o be_v receive_v of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o in_o the_o work_n of_o these_o meditation_n upon_o our_o heart_n we_o shall_v come_v to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n when_o we_o be_v draw_v nigh_o to_o he_o in_o that_o holy_a ordinance_n of_o he_o thus_o for_o meditation_n the_o next_o thing_n when_o we_o be_v there_o must_v be_v a_o actuate_a of_o these_o holy_a disposition_n that_o before_o we_o speak_v of_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o a_o christian_n to_o bring_v grace_n to_o the_o sacrament_n but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o faith_n afresh_o lay_v more_o hold_n upon_o jesus_n christ_n look_v as_o once_o thou_o do_v in_o thy_o first_o conversion_n when_o christ_n be_v present_v to_o thou_o in_o the_o word_n or_o in_o any_o other_o way_n there_o be_v a_o act_n of_o faith_n draw_v forth_o whereby_o thy_o soul_n do_v cast_v itself_o and_o roll_n itself_o upon_o jesus_n christ_n so_o shall_v thou_o renew_v it_o renew_v the_o same_o work_n of_o faith_n that_o thou_o do_v find_v in_o thy_o very_a first_o conversion_n and_o thereby_o thou_o shall_v come_v to_o have_v renew_v comfort_n in_o the_o renew_n of_o that_o act_n i_o may_v name_v thou_o other_o grace_n and_o disposition_n how_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o stir_v and_o a_o act_n of_o they_o only_o remember_v i_o leave_v all_o this_o point_n with_o this_o note_n that_o grace_n be_v not_o enough_o for_o partake_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n except_o there_o be_v a_o actuate_a and_o a_o stir_v up_o of_o that_o grace_n many_o christian_n be_v careful_a to_o prepare_v and_o examine_v before_o whether_o they_o have_v grace_n or_o no_o but_o at_o that_o time_n when_o they_o come_v to_o receive_v than_o there_o be_v not_o a_o lively_a work_n and_o stir_v of_o that_o grace_n and_o so_o they_o come_v to_o lose_v the_o comfort_n &_o benefit_n of_o that_o ordinance_n thus_o much_o shall_v suffice_v for_o this_o point_n of_o sanctify_a god_n name_n in_o receive_v the_o holy_a communion_n i_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o the_o last_o point_n which_o be_v the_o sanctify_a the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n now_o this_o argument_n may_v take_v we_o up_o many_o sermon_n but_o upon_o occasion_n of_o the_o day_n of_o prayer_n and_o humiliation_n i_o have_v preach_v divers_a sermon_n about_o the_o point_n of_o prayer_n therefore_o i_o shall_v be_v brief_a and_o only_o now_o reckon_v up_o together_o and_o set_v before_o your_o view_n the_o several_a thing_n that_o be_v to_o be_v do_v for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n first_o for_o prayer_n in_o that_o we_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n and_o its_o a_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n that_o i_o suppose_v all_o of_o you_o can_v but_o acknowledge_v and_o that_o it_o be_v a_o natural_a duty_n of_o worship_n the_o other_o be_v institute_v but_o
because_o than_o we_o shall_v and_o if_o we_o worship_n god_n as_o we_o ought_v we_o do_v act_v our_o faith_n and_o humility_n and_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n we_o do_v act_v they_o as_o it_o be_v upon_o god_n when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o that_o be_v require_v in_o every_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o you_o shall_v stir_v up_o the_o faculty_n of_o your_o soul_n and_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o you_o shall_v act_v they_o upon_o god_n when_o you_o be_v worship_v of_o he_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o come_v with_o grace_n when_o you_o come_v near_o to_o he_o therefore_o in_o isa_n 29._o 13._o the_o lord_n complain_v there_o this_o people_n draw_v near_o to_o i_o with_o their_o lip_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o i_o as_o if_o god_n shall_v say_v indeed_o they_o come_v and_o speak_v to_o i_o and_o therefore_o they_o think_v they_o draw_v nigh_o to_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v that_o their_o heart_n shall_v be_v act_v upon_o i_o that_o be_v the_o meaning_n and_o in_o zeph._n 3._o 2._o god_n complain_v there_o of_o his_o people_n that_o they_o do_v not_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o it_o appear_v plain_o you_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o and_o when_o you_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n you_o worship_v he_o now_o if_o i_o shall_v come_v from_o one_o end_n of_o the_o congregation_n to_o the_o other_o and_o ask_v every_o one_o of_o you_o this_o question_n it_o be_v your_o duty_n to_o worship_n god_n be_v it_o not_o yes_o that_o you_o will_v all_o be_v ready_a to_o answer_v and_o what_o do_v you_o do_v that_o respect_n and_o homage_n that_o you_o owe_v to_o the_o infinite_a god_n and_o so_o likewise_o when_o you_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n now_o when_o we_o come_v to_o offer_v a_o present_a to_o man_n we_o know_v how_o we_o prepare_v and_o with_o what_o suitable_a presence_n we_o desire_v to_o offer_v but_o of_o that_o afterward_o when_o we_o come_v to_o speak_v of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v 2_o second_o remember_v when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n i_o come_v to_o set_v myself_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o those_o way_n that_o god_n do_v let_v out_o the_o choice_n of_o his_o mercy_n to_o his_o people_n in_o i_o have_v many_o mercy_n from_o god_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o creature_n but_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o i_o expect_v the_o communication_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o another_o way_n then_o through_o any_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n be_v the_o chief_a channel_n that_o god_n do_v let_v out_o the_o choice_a of_o his_o mercy_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n through_o and_o now_o i_o be_o go_v to_o worship_n he_o i_o be_o go_v to_o present_v myself_o fore_o god_n indeed_o there_o be_v a_o little_a glimmer_n of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n through_o other_o creature_n to_o i_o but_o the_o glorious_a beam_n of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n be_v through_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n 3_o and_o then_o three_o i_o be_o now_o go_v to_o act_v my_o soul_n upon_o god_n so_o that_o if_o i_o have_v any_o ability_n to_o close_v with_o god_n to_o act_v my_o soul_n upon_o moon_n and_o star_n to_o labour_n to_o lift_v up_o my_o heart_n to_o god_n and_o when_o i_o see_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o the_o sea_n and_o for_o my_o meat_n and_o drink_n i_o be_o to_o bless_v god_n and_o to_o acknowledge_v god_n in_o all_o but_o now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n than_o all_o the_o strength_n of_o my_o soul_n be_v to_o be_v act_v upon_o god_n in_o a_o more_o special_a manner_n i_o must_v then_o above_o all_o labour_n to_o stir_v up_o whatsoever_o i_o have_v in_o my_o soul_n to_o act_v upon_o god_n this_o be_v now_o to_o worship_n god_n second_o 2_o if_o very_a grievous_a burden_n to_o they_o why_o here_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o to_o worship_n god_n be_v to_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n and_o the_o guilt_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o have_v make_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n terrible_a to_o they_o and_o therefore_o they_o have_v rather_o go_v into_o their_o company_n &_o be_v merry_a eat_v drink_v sport_n or_o any_o thing_n rather_o than_o to_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n we_o know_v how_o it_o be_v with_o adam_n when_o god_n appear_v in_o the_o garden_n and_o call_v to_o he_o he_o run_v to_o hide_v himself_o why_o because_o he_o have_v the_o preparation_n and_o that_o may_v be_v in_o way_n of_o application_n to_o you_o to_o make_v you_o to_o be_v in_o love_n with_o preparation_n for_o holy_a duty_n there_o be_v abundance_n of_o good_a in_o it_o first_o by_o this_o mean_n we_o come_v to_o make_v every_o duty_n of_o worship_n easy_a to_o we_o thing_n be_v difficult_a when_o we_o come_v upon_o they_o unprepared_a if_o you_o have_v a_o friend_n come_v to_o dinner_n or_o supper_n to_o you_o and_o shall_v come_v sudden_o and_o you_o have_v nothing_o prepare_v there_o will_v be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o stir_n in_o the_o house_n but_o it_o you_o have_v every_o thing_n prepare_v it_o will_v be_v carry_v on_o in_o a_o easy_a way_n and_o the_o reason_n why_o people_n eâ—mplaine_v so_o much_o of_o difficulty_n in_o duty_n it_o be_v because_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o prepare_v indeed_o we_o have_v natural_o many_o thing_n to_o keep_v we_o off_o from_o god_n but_o now_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v prepare_v for_o a_o holy_a duty_n it_o go_v off_o as_o easy_a to_o god_n even_o into_o the_o infinite_a ocean_n of_o all_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n as_o a_o ship_n go_v off_o to_o be_v lansht_v when_o you_o have_v make_v i_o quote_v before_o for_o the_o work_n of_o preparation_n do_v but_o consider_v a_o verse_n or_o two_o further_a and_o you_o shall_v find_v what_o abundance_n of_o good_a there_o come_v upon_o the_o thou_o come_v to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n thou_o be_v trouble_v will_v the_o lord_n have_v regard_n to_o such_o a_o duty_n as_o this_o be_v thou_o may_v have_v certain_a assurance_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v regard_n if_o thou_o can_v make_v this_o point_n good_a to_o thou_o own_o soul_n that_o it_o be_v thy_o care_n to_o make_v preparation_n for_o this_o duty_n can_v thou_o say_v prepare_v for_o duty_n you_o that_o be_v young_a beginner_n or_o you_o that_o have_v make_v profession_n a_o long_a time_n but_o yet_o have_v not_o have_v the_o weight_n of_o this_o duty_n upon_o your_o spirit_n now_o be_v careful_a for_o a_o while_n to_o prepare_v for_o every_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n that_o god_n call_v you_o to_o and_o i_o say_v within_o a_o little_a time_n thou_o may_v bring_v thy_o heart_n into_o such_o a_o temper_n as_o thou_o may_v be_v ready_a at_o all_o time_n to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n because_o you_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o come_v to_o that_o temper_n man_n because_o they_o do_v good_a action_n but_o god_n accept_v of_o the_o action_n of_o man_n because_o their_o person_n be_v good_a if_o indeed_o we_o see_v a_o man_n do_v good_a than_o we_o love_v he_o and_o accept_v of_o the_o person_n of_o the_o man_n but_o god_n first_o will_v accept_v of_o the_o person_n before_o the_o action_n as_o the_o lord_n accept_v of_o abeâ—_n first_o and_o then_o he_o accept_v his_o offering_n so_o you_o must_v look_v to_o that_o to_o have_v your_o person_n first_o accept_v of_o god_n before_o any_o duty_n can_v be_v accept_v you_o think_v though_o you_o be_v wicked_a and_o sinful_a yet_o if_o you_o amend_v your_o life_n god_n will_v accept_v of_o you_o you_o go_v that_o way_n to_o work_v but_o certain_o that_o be_v the_o wrong_a way_n you_o must_v first_o look_v after_o mean_n of_o acceptation_n of_o your_o person_n which_o be_v through_o the_o righteousness_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o through_o the_o sanctification_n of_o his_o spirit_n whereby_o you_o come_v to_o have_v his_o image_n and_o life_n and_o so_o be_v accept_v and_o then_o all_o that_o proceed_v from_o you_o come_v to_o be_v accept_v there_o be_v not_o any_o action_n which_o come_v earth_n be_v able_a to_o imagine_v look_v upon_o the_o lord_n as_o have_v all_o excellency_n in_o himself_o join_v in_o one_o and_o that_o immutable_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o the_o fountain_n of_o all_o excellency_n good_a and_o glory_n that_o all_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n have_v and_o look_v upon_o the_o â—ord_n every_o time_n thou_o come_v to_o worship_n he_o as_o that_o god_n who_o angel_n do_v adore_v and_o before_o who_o the_o devil_n be_v force_v to_o tremble_v behold_v he_o in_o this_o his_o glory_n and_o this_o will_v help_v thou_o to_o sanctify_v his_o name_n when_o thou_o come_v to_o he_o the_o great_a reason_n why_o people_n come_v and_o worship_n god_n in_o a_o slight_a way_n it_o be_v because_o that_o they_o do_v not_o see_v god_n in_o his_o glory_n it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n for_o god_n to_o give_v unto_o we_o a_o sight_n of_o himself_o a_o sight_n of_o his_o glory_n here_o in_o this_o world_n while_o we_o be_v worship_v of_o he_o this_o will_v keep_v the_o ground_n mingle_v with_o base_a and_o drossy_a thing_n when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_v the_o lord_n indeed_o it_o be_v fit_a that_o we_o shall_v have_v our_o heart_n low_a as_o we_o shall_v etc._n etc._n what_o a_o damnable_a thing_n be_v it_o then_o to_o make_v use_n of_o any_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n sometime_o extraordinary_a worship_n as_o fast_v and_o prayer_n to_o be_v a_o cloak_n to_o cover_v their_o wickedness_n thou_o be_v so_o far_o from_o sanctify_a god_n name_v that_o thou_o pollute_a god_n name_v thou_o do_v what_o in_o thou_o lie_v for_o to_o cast_v even_o dirt_n in_o the_o face_n of_o god_n himself_o that_o do_v so_o the_o second_o base_a end_n be_v to_o subject_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n to_o the_o praise_n of_o man_n as_o to_o perform_v duty_n of_o god_n worship_n for_o the_o esteem_n of_o man_n and_o because_o we_o shall_v be_v well_o think_v of_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o you_o young_a one_o and_o other_o you_o will_v fain_o be_v eâ—eemed_v well_o of_o by_o those_o that_o you_o live_v withal_o it_o be_v a_o desirable_a thing_n to_o have_v a_o good_a esteem_n from_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a but_o take_v heed_n that_o you_o good_a to_o ourselves_o and_o we_o may_v be_v encourage_v to_o the_o duty_n by_o the_o expectation_n of_o good_a to_o ourselves_o yet_o we_o must_v look_v high_a we_o must_v look_v at_o the_o honour_n and_o praise_n of_o god_n that_o the_o name_n of_o the_o bless_a god_n may_v be_v honour_v now_o i_o be_o go_v to_o prayer_n oh_o that_o i_o may_v pray_v so_o as_o i_o may_v lift_v up_o god_n name_n i_o be_o go_v to_o hear_v oh_o that_o i_o may_v hear_v so_o as_o god_n may_v be_v honour_v by_o my_o hear_n it_o be_v this_o that_o carry_v i_o on_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o make_v i_o rise_v the_o other_o say_v not_o who_o shall_v ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n &_o c_o the_o meaning_n be_v this_o as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v say_v the_o truth_n be_v while_o you_o have_v no_o other_o seal_v with_o three_o or_o four_o hundred_o seal_n it_o may_v be_v but_o yet_o for_o thy_o comfort_n while_o thou_o be_v alive_a it_o be_v possible_a that_o these_o seal_n may_v be_v break_v open_a suitable_a to_o a_o fellowship_n at_o table_n and_o communion_n to_o have_v the_o meat_n set_v before_o they_o be_v blessed_v and_o then_o for_o all_o to_o partake_v of_o it_o and_o beside_o this_o giving_z it_o into_o every_o one_o hand_n certain_o it_o come_v to_o we_o from_o a_o popish_a and_o superstitious_a conceit_n of_o the_o papist_n for_o the_o papist_n will_v give_v it_o into_o their_o mouth_n because_o the_o people_n must_v not_o defile_v it_o with_o their_o hand_n and_o it_o be_v to_o bring_v more_o reverence_n to_o the_o sacrament_n now_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o in_o particular_a and_o not_o in_o general_a to_o the_o church_n for_o by_o this_o mean_n minister_n may_v abundant_o ease_v themselves_o of_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o charge_n and_o guilt_n for_o upon_o this_o ground_n it_o will_v appear_v that_o a_o minister_n though_o as_o a_o eminent_a officer_n he_o be_v to_o look_v to_o his_o congregation_n that_o they_o be_v fit_a yet_o the_o truth_n be_v it_o concern_v the_o church_n as_o well_o to_o look_v who_o come_v there_o and_o likewise_o the_o minister_n i_o say_v to_o look_v about_o he_o that_o he_o do_v not_o say_v the_o body_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v give_v to_o thou_o when_o he_o know_v they_o be_v profane_a and_o wicked_a it_o concern_v the_o minister_n to_o look_v that_o he_o do_v not_o tell_v a_o lie_n but_o now_o when_o the_o minister_n give_v it_o general_o to_o the_o church_n take_v eat_v and_o take_v drink_v he_o give_v it_o particular_o to_o no_o body_n now_o than_o his_o charge_n be_v divide_v to_o the_o church_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o body_n that_o be_v unworthy_a let_v the_o church_n look_v to_o it_o as_o well_o as_o he_o though_o he_o as_o a_o eminent_a officer_n it_o be_v more_o especial_o in_o particular_a his_o duty_n then_o any_o other_o heretofore_o the_o charge_n will_v lie_v much_o upon_o the_o minister_n but_o the_o minister_n according_a to_o the_o institution_n shall_v give_v the_o sacrament_n to_o no_o particular_a but_o in_o general_a to_o the_o church_n and_o therefore_o if_o there_o be_v but_o any_o particular_a that_o the_o minister_n upon_o a_o particular_a knowledge_n do_v know_v to_o be_v naught_o he_o may_v in_o great_a part_n discharge_v himself_o as_o profess_v against_o this_o or_o that_o particular_a man_n for_o it_o be_v not_o in_o
