our_o delivery_n to_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o promise_n the_o covenant_n etc._n etc._n it_o make_v we_o fly_v in_o to_o the_o very_a bosom_n of_o christ_n for_o shelter_n as_o to_o our_o city_n of_o refuge_n our_o horn_n of_o salvation_n and_o last_o faith_n be_v on_o foot_n and_o lively_a withal_o it_o be_v a_o whetstone_n and_o serve_v to_o quicken_v and_o set_v a_o edge_n upon_o our_o love_n and_o consequent_o upon_o our_o godly_a sorrow_n our_o zeal_n our_o obedience_n etc._n etc._n for_o then_o do_v we_o love_v most_o when_o we_o be_v most_o sensible_a how_o much_o be_v forgive_v we_o so_o great_a be_v the_o consequent_n of_o this_o point_n so_o then_o i_o say_v what_o i_o have_v speak_v for_o your_o comfort_n in_o this_o point_n be_v not_o that_o i_o will_v have_v you_o rest_v altogether_o upon_o the_o degree_n of_o humiliation_n already_o acknowledge_v by_o you_o only_o this_o i_o will_v not_o have_v it_o hide_v from_o your_o eye_n what_o you_o not_o prevail_v against_o you_o by_o that_o great_a and_o admirable_a policy_n of_o he_o as_o he_o have_v do_v with_o many_o to_o bear_v you_o back_o from_o faith_n and_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o promise_n without_o the_o which_o there_o can_v be_v no_o comfort_n in_o a_o christian_a soul_n yea_o no_o cheerful_a no_o acceptable_a service_n to_o the_o lord_n without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v he_o yea_o the_o heart_n want_v courage_n to_o do_v it_o either_o to_o pâ—eâ—se_v he_o to_o praise_v he_o or_o to_o honour_v he_o now_o his_o policy_n be_v this_o which_o may_v fear_v god_n even_o for_o a_o time_n when_o a_o judgement_n be_v upon_o he_o for_o a_o fit_a or_o a_o start_n but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o true_a fear_n of_o god_n for_o when_o the_o judgement_n be_v over_o he_o go_v to_o his_o wont_a sin_n so_o do_v pharaoh_n and_o jereboam_n thus_o he_o fear_v not_o always_o and_o so_o be_v not_o bless_v he_o have_v not_o get_v the_o lord_n fear_v as_o never_o to_o depart_v from_o he_o and_o so_o be_v not_o in_o the_o covenant_n but_o see_v thou_o if_o thy_o judgement_n and_o affliction_n not_o only_o while_o they_o be_v lie_v on_o but_o even_o afterward_o they_o have_v bring_v forth_o the_o quiet_a fruit_n of_o righteousness_n but_o that_o this_o mark_n may_v be_v the_o more_o clear_a comfort_v and_o convince_a we_o will_v lay_v it_o out_o in_o the_o particular_n to_o wit_n their_o fear_n who_o have_v the_o true_a fear_n and_o withal_o let_v you_o see_v the_o quite_o contrary_a in_o the_o wicked_a and_o that_o both_o from_o scripture_n 1._o they_o who_o have_v this_o true_a fear_n they_o fear_v god_n justice_n and_o anger_n against_o sin_n as_o be_v clear_a lord_n enter_v not_o into_o judgement_n with_o thy_o servant_n rebuke_v i_o not_o in_o thy_o wrath_n who_o know_v the_o power_n of_o thy_o wrath_n 2._o they_o fear_v the_o threaten_n of_o the_o word_n and_o tremble_v at_o it_o 3._o they_o fear_v his_o judgement_n against_o sin_n record_v in_o scripture_n or_o observe_v by_o experience_n psal_n 119._o the_o contrary_a of_o all_o this_o be_v true_a in_o the_o wicked_a for_o 1._o in_o general_a they_o fear_v not_o god_n at_o all_o according_a to_o a_o notable_a place_n psal_n 36._o who_o if_o they_o be_v not_o strange_o besot_v and_o blind_v may_v see_v that_o they_o be_v wrong_v when_o even_o other_o see_v it_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o wicked_a say_v in_o my_o heart_n that_o there_o be_v no_o fear_n of_o god_n before_o his_o eye_n etc._n etc._n look_v and_o consider_v the_o place_n 2._o they_o fear_v not_o god_n justice_n and_o anger_n they_o never_o get_v a_o sensible_a and_o serious_a thought_n of_o his_o justice_n before_o their_o eye_n but_o think_v he_o be_v all_o mercy_n and_o that_o therefore_o if_o they_o shall_v sin_v all_o their_o life_n time_n and_o yet_o but_o at_o the_o very_a last_o bid_v the_o lord_n have_v mercy_n on_o they_o that_o that_o will_v serve_v their_o turn_n whereas_o god_n child_n howsoever_o sometime_o they_o have_v have_v the_o like_a apprehension_n see_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o justice_n and_o holiness_n and_o that_o in_o such_o a_o sort_n as_o that_o hardly_o can_v they_o get_v a_o glimpse_n or_o glance_n of_o his_o mercy_n 3._o they_o fear_v not_o the_o lord_n threaten_n tremble_v not_o at_o his_o word_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a deut._n 29.29_o they_o be_v ready_a when_o they_o bear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o curse_n to_o bless_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o heart_n say_v i_o shall_v have_v peace_n though_o i_o walk_v in_o the_o and_o not_o waken_v or_o quicken_v they_o have_v many_o of_o they_o no_o care_n or_o desire_n at_o all_o about_o heavenly_a or_o spiritual_a thing_n or_o of_o their_o own_o salvation_n their_o care_n and_o desire_n be_v about_o corn_n and_o oil_n psal_n 4._o about_o many_o thing_n psal_n 10._o give_v they_o their_o wish_n and_o desire_n they_o will_v run_v this_o way_n as_o for_o grace_n and_o glory_n they_o think_v they_o have_v enough_o of_o the_o one_o and_o that_o they_o be_v sure_a enough_o of_o the_o other_o the_o godly_a and_o waken_v be_v not_o so_o lord_n give_v i_o the_o light_n of_o thy_o countenance_n they_o take_v care_n for_o the_o one_o thing_n necessary_a give_v they_o their_o wish_n and_o desire_n it_o will_v be_v grace_n and_o not_o good_n 2._o if_o they_o have_v any_o care_n or_o desire_v this_o way_n they_o be_v 1._o but_o sluggish_a desire_n and_o not_o diligent_a they_o may_v wish_v and_o will_v with_o balaam_n their_o salvation_n but_o they_o do_v not_o work_v much_o less_o work_n out_o their_o own_o salvation_n they_o may_v well_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n but_o not_o and_o the_o righteousness_n thereof_o
that_o the_o lord_n require_v and_o if_o you_o pray_v unto_o god_n for_o they_o look_v to_o the_o six_o commandment_n and_o see_v whether_o or_o no_o thy_o heart_n do_v not_o often_o rise_v in_o anger_n against_o thy_o neighbour_n without_o or_o for_o a_o very_a small_a cause_n and_o thy_o mouth_n do_v not_o break_v out_o into_o miscal_v of_o he_o yea_o perhaps_o in_o curse_v he_o which_o remember_v how_o it_o also_o be_v to_o be_v extend_v to_o thy_o heart_n and_o to_o thy_o speech_n and_o so_o meet_v with_o all_o thy_o unclean_a thought_n and_o unclean_a speech_n and_o look_v how_o thou_o have_v carry_v and_o do_v carry_v thyself_o in_o the_o other_o point_n of_o sobriety_n in_o thy_o drink_n in_o thy_o eat_n a_o point_n certain_o that_o many_o fail_v in_o and_o few_o consider_v yea_o and_o in_o thy_o wear_n consider_v the_o eight_o command_n and_o see_v if_o perhaps_o thou_o have_v not_o wrong_v thy_o neighbour_n in_o his_o good_n but_o how_o have_v thou_o employ_v thy_o own_o how_o will_v thou_o clear_v thy_o account_n to_o he_o who_o will_v take_v account_n of_o the_o talent_n he_o have_v commit_v to_o thou_o have_v thou_o not_o spend_v much_o superfluous_o and_o unnecessary_o when_o the_o member_n of_o jesus_n christ_n have_v be_v like_a to_o starve_v for_o want_v look_v to_o the_o nine_o command_n which_o forbid_v thou_o to_o speak_v to_o the_o disgrace_n thing_n of_o the_o law_n that_o you_o may_v see_v what_o be_v displease_v to_o he_o and_o dangerous_a to_o your_o own_o soul_n ii_o second_o have_v thus_o apply_v the_o law_n to_o yourselves_o for_o the_o knowledge_n and_o discovery_n of_o sin_n then_o in_o the_o second_o place_n apply_v the_o threaten_n and_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n to_o yourself_o for_o your_o humiliation_n and_o to_o this_o end_n consider_v the_o severity_n and_o greatness_n of_o they_o the_o universality_n and_o extent_n of_o they_o they_o be_v certain_o exceed_v great_a and_o fearful_a they_o extend_v to_o the_o body_n to_o the_o mind_n to_o the_o temporal_a and_o spiritual_a care_n of_o a_o man_n to_o this_o life_n and_o to_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o they_o be_v very_o fearful_a in_o all_o these_o respect_n consider_v chief_o the_o universality_n of_o these_o threaten_n in_o regard_n of_o their_o object_n every_o one_o great_a and_o small_a young_a and_o old_a he_o or_o she_o be_v liable_a to_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n we_o shall_v consider_v this_o for_o we_o be_v exceed_o prone_a to_o make_v a_o exception_n and_o to_o bless_v ourselves_o in_o our_o heart_n when_o god_n curse_n and_o to_o slip_v the_o choler_n but_o what_o say_v the_o scripture_n curse_v be_v every_o one_o that_o abide_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n etc._n etc._n and_o tribulation_n and_o anguish_n be_v on_o every_o soul_n that_o dâ—th_v evil_a etc._n etc._n we_o shall_v also_o consider_v the_o truth_n of_o he_o that_o have_v pronounce_v these_o threaten_n even_o god_n that_o can_v lie_v heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v pass_v away_o but_o not_o one_o jâ—t_n of_o his_o word_n shall_v pass_v away_o now_o all_o this_o be_v little_a enough_o to_o move_v we_o for_o we_o be_v wonderful_o give_v to_o this_o to_o shift_v the_o threaten_n of_o the_o law_n off_o from_o ourselves_o although_o we_o can_v deny_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v true_a that_o have_v pronounce_v they_o yet_o indirect_o our_o unbelieved_a shift_a heart_n do_v it_o like_o those_o of_o who_o the_o prophet_n jeremy_n speak_v chap._n 5.12_o they_o have_v boly_v the_o lord_n say_v he_o and_o say_v this_o evil_n shall_v not_o come_v upon_o we_o what_o else_o do_v they_o that_o walk_v in_o their_o sin_n and_o yet_o think_v that_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v not_o overtake_v they_o but_o even_o give_v the_o lord_n the_o lie_n and_o again_o although_o the_o threaten_n and_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n be_v so_o general_a and_o univerfall_v as_o you_o may_v see_v deut._n 29._o the_o lord_n fore-sets_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v some_o and_o alas_o will_v to_o god_n that_o the_o most_o part_n be_v not_o so_o who_o when_o they_o hear_v the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v nevertheless_o bless_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o shall_v say_v i_o shall_v have_v peace_n though_o i_o walk_v in_o the_o imagination_n of_o my_o own_o heart_n how_o many_o be_v there_o of_o this_o kind_n that_o ban_v &_o swear_v and_o drink_v and_o rail_v and_o break_v the_o sabbath_n secure_o and_o yet_o nevertheless_o bless_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o heart_n &_o think_v that_o no_o such_o thing_n shall_v overtake_v they_o all_o secure_a sinner_n be_v of_o this_o sort_n o_o but_o what_o say_v the_o lord_n to_o such_o a_o soul_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o spare_v he_o but_o the_o anger_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o jealousy_n shall_v smoke_v against_o he_o and_o all_o the_o curse_n of_o his_o book_n shall_v come_v upon_o he_o and_o the_o lord_n shall_v blot_v out_o his_o name_n under_o heaven_n o_o that_o secure_a finner_n will_v consider_v this_o but_o what_o shall_v i_o say_v of_o the_o slowness_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n to_o believe_v the_o lord_n threaten_n the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n they_o be_v so_o senseless_a and_o stupid_a that_o when_o they_o see_v they_o execute_v upon_o other_o yea_o when_o they_o feel_v they_o upon_o themselves_o disease_n upon_o their_o body_n grief_n upon_o their_o mind_n etc._n etc._n yet_o they_o conceive_v not_o they_o consider_v not_o that_o it_o be_v by_o virtue_n of_o the_o lord_n threaten_n that_o this_o come_v upon_o they_o so_o to_o humble_v themselves_o under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n this_o the_o prophet_n jeremy_n chap._n 5._o set_n down_o to_o have_v be_v the_o senseless_a condition_n of_o the_o people_n of_o his_o time_n thou_o have_v strike_v they_o but_o they_o have_v not_o grieve_v thou_o have_v confume_v they_o but_o they_o have_v not_o receive_v correction_n and_o he_o conclude_v sure_o they_o be_v poor_a they_o be_v foolish_a they_o know_v not_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n nor_o the_o judgement_n of_o their_o god_n this_o be_v a_o lamentable_a case_n and_o yet_o a_o common_a case_n we_o shall_v pray_v the_o lord_n to_o save_v we_o from_o this_o senselessness_n they_o be_v happy_a that_o when_o adversity_n come_v upon_o they_o get_v grace_n from_o god_n to_o acknowledge_v it_o to_o be_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o so_o humble_a themselves_o and_o be_v not_o condemn_v with_o the_o wicked_a world_n for_o so_o they_o prevent_v the_o wrath_n which_o be_v to_o come_v but_o happy_a be_v we_o if_o we_o will_v believe_v god_n threaten_n without_o feeling_n of_o they_o for_o than_o we_o shall_v prevent_v affliction_n also_o will_v we_o judge_v ourselves_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v judge_v etc._n etc._n now_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n especial_o that_o stand_v in_o the_o way_n and_o hinder_v the_o threaten_n of_o god_n law_n from_o have_v their_o due_a operation_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n and_o make_v man_n and_o woman_n to_o be_v secure_a notwithstanding_o of_o the_o peremptory_a threaten_n of_o the_o law_n and_o i_o beseech_v you_o take_v heed_n unto_o they_o that_o you_o be_v not_o also_o lull_v
for_o thyself_o suppose_v that_o thou_o be_v sure_a of_o mercy_n and_o that_o thou_o have_v already_o obtain_v mercy_n yet_o thou_o have_v need_v nevertheless_o to_o humble_v thyself_o under_o the_o we_o will_v judge_v ourselves_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o judge_v we_o first_o then_o thou_o shall_v consider_v the_o greatness_n of_o thy_o sin_n and_o withal_o call_v to_o remembrance_n the_o ground_n i_o lay_v down_o before_o and_o do_v prove_v to_o be_v true_a to_o wit_n that_o the_o very_a lest_o sin_n that_o ever_o thou_o commit_v do_v provoke_v the_o just_a and_o powerful_a lord_n the_o good_a and_o gracious_a god_n to_o wrath_n and_o that_o in_o so_o high_a a_o degree_n that_o he_o have_v ordain_v it_o to_o be_v punish_v with_o eternal_a and_o intolerable_a torment_n which_o shall_v be_v a_o ground_n not_o of_o a_o sleight_n and_o superficial_a but_o of_o a_o exceed_a care_n to_o prevent_v even_o the_o least_o sin_n and_o shall_v make_v we_o see_v that_o our_o humiliation_n and_o our_o godly_a sorrow_n even_o for_o our_o small_a sin_n be_v more_o deep_a we_o have_v need_n of_o this_o great_o but_o to_o the_o point_n consider_v now_o with_o thyself_o if_o so_o be_v the_o least_o even_o one_o of_o the_o least_o of_o thy_o sin_n be_v yet_o so_o great_a that_o it_o deserve_v eternal_a and_o intolerable_a torment_n and_o have_v provoke_v the_o lord_n so_o mean_v under_o heaven_n to_o be_v save_v o_o then_o what_o must_v be_v the_o deserve_n and_o degree_n of_o the_o punishment_n of_o thy_o great_a and_o gross_a sin_n and_o what_o measâ—â—e_n of_o wrath_n must_v thâ—u_o lie_n under_o in_o regard_n of_o they_o if_o thy_o fly_a and_o pass_v thought_n deserve_v such_o a_o punishment_n how_o then_o shall_v thou_o be_v punish_v for_o thy_o entertain_v and_o foster_v and_o delight_v in_o sinful_a thought_n of_o covetousness_n revenge_n ambition_n uncleanness_n etc._n etc._n if_o for_o every_o idle_a word_n thou_o must_v render_v a_o account_n in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n what_o account_n be_v then_o to_o be_v render_v of_o thy_o sinful_a and_o so_o sinful_a word_n wherewith_o thou_o have_v blaspheme_v the_o great_a and_o dreadful_a name_n of_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n and_o for_o thy_o stink_a corrupt_a communication_n unsavourie_a to_o a_o christian_a ear_n but_o most_o abominable_a to_o the_o holy_a lord_n who_o be_v purity_n itself_o and_o so_o can_v but_o high_o abhor_v such_o filthiness_n and_o which_o be_v a_o evident_a token_n that_o the_o unclean_a spirit_n have_v possession_n of_o thy_o heart_n and_o mouth_n and_o final_o if_o thy_o word_n and_o thought_n shall_v be_v so_o punish_v consider_v then_o what_o thy_o action_n will_v bring_v upon_o thou_o for_o then_o sin_n be_v finish_v and_o if_o the_o least_o of_o thy_o sinful_a action_n shall_v be_v so_o severe_o take_v order_n with_o o_o how_o shall_v thou_o tremble_v to_o think_v upon_o thy_o gross_a trespass_n and_o grievous_a offence_n in_o thy_o action_n 2._o consider_v the_o number_n of_o thy_o sin_n if_o one_o sin_n deserve_v so_o much_o what_o will_v so_o many_o procure_v yea_o even_o thy_o great_a and_o gross_a sin_n be_v so_o many_o in_o number_n and_o so_o often_o repeat_v you_o hear_v how_o severe_o and_o exemplary_o the_o lord_n punish_v his_o own_o people_n the_o natural_a olive_n for_o one_o act_n of_o one_o kind_n of_o sin_n and_o what_o then_o shall_v thou_o expect_v for_o so_o many_o several_a kind_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o may_v act_n of_o these_o kind_n 1._o for_o so_o often_o profane_v his_o worship_n 2._o so_o often_o profane_v his_o name_n 3._o so_o often_o profane_v his_o sabbath_n 4._o so_o many_o act_n of_o uncleanness_n 5._o and_o which_o be_v worse_o than_o all_o this_o for_o so_o many_o time_n and_o occasion_n neglect_v that_o great_a salvation_n and_o further_o by_o thy_o bypass_a great_a sin_n what_o innumerable_a certain_o innumerable_a sin_n have_v escape_v thou_o yea_o and_o daily_o do_v escape_v thou_o in_o these_o three_o respect_n to_o wit_n of_o thought_n word_n and_o manner_n of_o do_v 1._o the_o heart_n be_v desperate_o wicked_a and_o the_o imagination_n thereof_o be_v evil_a continual_o whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o out_o of_o that_o foul_a fountain_n be_v continual_o stream_v out_o a_o source_n of_o sinful_a thought_n 2._o the_o tongue_n be_v also_o a_o unruly_a evil_n and_o it_o also_o make_v we_o most_o frequent_o to_o sin_n against_o the_o lord_n and_o 3._o such_o be_v the_o pitiful_a corruption_n and_o pollution_n of_o our_o sinful_a nature_n that_o we_o sin_v continual_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v even_o our_o best_a duty_n our_o best_a service_n be_v pollute_v our_o righteousness_n be_v like_o a_o menstruous_a cloth_n so_o that_o we_o be_v in_o regard_n of_o this_o corruption_n as_o one_o make_v the_o comparison_n very_o like_o the_o snail_n that_o defile_v all_o the_o way_n it_o pass_v through_o and_o leave_v a_o slime_n behind_o it_o even_o so_o do_v we_o in_o regard_n of_o this_o pollution_n of_o our_o nature_n defile_v all_o the_o footstep_n we_o walk_v in_o there_o be_v the_o slime_n of_o sin_n to_o be_v see_v in_o our_o best_a action_n so_o that_o in_o respect_n of_o these_o three_o our_o thought_n our_o word_n and_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o do_v we_o sin_v most_o frequent_o which_o be_v most_o pitiful_a now_o since_o any_o of_o these_o deserve_v eternal_a torment_n what_o then_o do_v they_o be_v all_o join_v together_o 3._o consider_v the_o manner_n of_o thy_o sin_n for_o this_o add_v exceed_o to_o the_o greatness_n of_o
sin_n and_o serve_v much_o for_o aggravation_n see_v if_o thou_o have_v not_o sin_v against_o thy_o knowledge_n and_o if_o thou_o have_v do_v so_o thou_o be_v worthy_a of_o and_o shall_v receive_v double_a stripe_n know_v thou_o and_o be_v it_o not_o often_o tell_v thou_o that_o thou_o shall_v keep_v the_o sabbath_n in_o thy_o thought_n and_o discourse_n that_o thou_o shall_v renew_v thy_o repentance_n that_o thou_o shall_v what_o ever_o thy_o other_o employment_n be_v grow_v in_o grace_n and_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n that_o thou_o shall_v apply_v thy_o heart_n unto_o spiritual_a wisdom_n that_o thou_o shall_v not_o only_o hear_v and_o read_v but_o go_v apart_o and_o meditate_v upon_o god_n word_n and_o as_o occasion_n serve_v and_o thy_o ability_n shall_v permit_v to_o speak_v of_o it_o i_o say_v have_v thou_o know_v these_o thing_n and_o have_v they_o be_v ofttimes_o tell_v thou_o and_o yet_o because_o they_o be_v painful_a thou_o have_v forbear_v to_o do_v they_o o_o how_o many_o stripe_n may_v thou_o look_v for_o 2._o see_v if_o thou_o have_v not_o sin_v against_o thy_o conscience_n for_o this_o be_v yet_o more_o than_o to_o sin_n against_o knowledge_n to_o wit_n when_o not_o only_o one_o know_v a_o thing_n in_o general_a but_o when_o by_o his_o general_a knowledge_n of_o it_o his_o conscience_n give_v he_o particular_a warning_n to_o do_v or_o to_o abstain_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n prompt_v he_o to_o it_o and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o go_v his_o own_o way_n this_o be_v a_o most_o heavy_a sin_n it_o be_v a_o wound_n of_o the_o conscience_n and_o a_o grieve_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n yea_o and_o in_o a_o degree_n of_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n say_v hebr._n 10._o a_o despight_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n see_v then_o if_o ever_o thou_o have_v sin_v this_o way_n against_o the_o motion_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o warning_n of_o thy_o own_o conscience_n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o thy_o own_o conscience_n have_v suggest_v unto_o thou_o that_o such_o a_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v do_v and_o yet_o thou_o do_v it_o not_o or_o such_o a_o thing_n not_o to_o be_v do_v and_o yet_o thou_o do_v it_o and_o certain_o if_o thou_o have_v thou_o have_v need_v great_o to_o be_v humble_v this_o be_v to_o sin_n stubborn_o and_o rebellious_o 3._o see_v if_o thou_o have_v sin_v out_o of_o presumption_n that_o be_v to_o say_v presume_v upon_o the_o lord_n mercy_n many_o sin_n this_o way_n and_o conclude_v with_o themselves_o the_o lord_n be_v merciful_a and_o easy_a to_o be_v entreat_v ready_a to_o forgive_v and_o therefore_o although_o i_o sin_n i_o shall_v get_v pardon_n yea_o although_o i_o shall_v sin_v all_o my_o life_n long_o i_o shall_v get_v mercy_n easy_o at_o last_o this_o be_v a_o grievous_a kind_n of_o sin_v and_o a_o uncouth_a way_n of_o conclusion_n and_o it_o be_v a_o dangerous_a conclusion_n for_o thy_o own_o soul_n for_o none_o so_o ready_a to_o refuse_v mercy_n as_o those_o who_o have_v thus_o sin_v presume_v upon_o mercy_n turn_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n unto_o wantonness_n for_o what_o say_v the_o lord_n deut._n 29._o if_o any_o man_n hear_v the_o word_n of_o this_o curse_n shall_v nevertheless_o bless_v himself_o in_o his_o own_o heart_n etc._n etc._n i_o will_v not_o spare_v that_o man_n say_v the_o lord_n and_o if_o ever_o thou_o get_v mercy_n think_v on_o it_o thou_o shall_v not_o find_v it_o so_o easy_a to_o be_v get_v nor_o the_o lord_n so_o easy_a to_o be_v entreat_v god_n child_n find_v it_o hard_o enough_o all_o own_o soul_n so_o be_v it_o a_o most_o ungrateful_a and_o unnatural_a conclusion_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n to_o say_v that_o because_o he_o be_v good_a and_o gracious_a and_o merciful_a and_o ready_a to_o forgive_v thou_o that_o therefore_o thou_o will_v continue_v to_o sin_n against_o he_o to_o provoke_v he_o to_o wrath_n shall_v thou_o not_o rather_o conclude_v be_v he_o so_o gracious_a indeed_o alas_o that_o ever_o i_o shall_v offend_v he_o i_o will_v no_o more_o do_v so_o by_o his_o grace_n and_o assistance_n be_v it_o not_o a_o wicked_a thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o aggravation_n of_o thy_o sin_n in_o god_n sight_n that_o thou_o have_v sin_v against_o so_o many_o benefit_n and_o favour_n thus_o we_o see_v the_o lord_n by_o nathan_n aggravate_v david_n sin_n i_o isaiah_n make_v this_o aggravation_n why_o shall_v you_o be_v strike_v any_o more_o you_o will_v revolt_v more_o and_o more_o and_o jer._n 5._o thou_o have_v strike_v they_o but_o they_o have_v not_o grieve_v thou_o have_v consume_v they_o but_o they_o have_v not_o receive_v correction_n this_o be_v also_o a_o great_a aggravation_n of_o sin_n the_o psalmist_n say_v be_v not_o like_o the_o horse_n or_o the_o mule_n which_o can_v be_v hold_v in_o but_o by_o bit_n and_o bridle_n but_o this_o be_v to_o be_v worse_o than_o horse_n or_o mule_n even_o we_o to_o be_v hold_v in_o with_o bit_n and_o bridle_n both_o these_o aggravation_n ezra_n put_v together_o chap._n 9_o v._n 13_o 14_o and_o after_o all_o that_o be_v come_v upon_o we_o for_o our_o evil_a deed_n and_o for_o our_o great_a trespass_n
see_v that_o thou_o our_o god_n have_v punish_v we_o less_o than_o our_o iniquity_n deserve_v and_o have_v give_v we_o such_o a_o deliverance_n as_o this_o shall_v we_o again_o break_v thy_o commandment_n will_v thou_o not_o be_v angry_a with_o we_o until_o thou_o have_v consume_v we_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v shall_v we_o not_o regard_v both_o thy_o judgement_n and_o thy_o favour_n that_o we_o can_v see_v the_o greatness_n of_o this_o sin_n to_o wit_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n negligent_o this_o sin_n be_v also_o fearful_o threaten_v isa_n 6._o v._n 12.66.4_o jer._n 7.13_o all_o which_o show_v that_o the_o contempt_n yea_o neglect_v of_o god_n word_n be_v not_o so_o small_a a_o sin_n as_o we_o apprehend_v it_o to_o be_v how_o then_o shall_v thou_o be_v humble_v who_o have_v be_v so_o often_o guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n see_v we_o not_o when_o malefactor_n be_v bring_v to_o the_o place_n of_o the_o execution_n even_o for_o cry_v sin_n that_o yet_o this_o sin_n make_v thy_o sin_n to_o be_v exceed_o sinful_a it_o be_v fearful_a to_o sin_n against_o the_o very_a light_n of_o nature_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o lord_n wrath_n upon_o belshazzar_n dan._n 5._o and_o upon_o these_o rom._n 1._o they_o have_v but_o the_o very_a light_n of_o nature_n and_o yet_o because_o they_o abuse_v even_o but_o that_o light_n because_o when_o they_o know_v god_n they_o glorify_v he_o not_o as_o god_n neither_o be_v thankful_a therefore_o he_o give_v they_o over_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n and_o far_o more_o fearful_a be_v it_o to_o sin_n against_o the_o light_n of_o the_o write_a law_n for_o that_o be_v a_o clear_a light_n and_o so_o we_o see_v the_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n be_v precise_o and_o peremptory_o punish_v every_o transgression_n receive_v a_o just_a recompense_n of_o reward_n but_o most_o fearful_a and_o sinful_a of_o all_o be_v it_o to_o sin_n against_o the_o most_o clear_a light_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o offer_n of_o salvation_n in_o it_o as_o be_v clear_a out_o of_o these_o two_o place_n heb._n 2.1_o heb._n 10.28_o 29._o and_o our_o saviour_n say_v plain_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v easy_a in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n even_o for_o sodom_n and_o gomorrah_n than_o it_o shall_v be_v for_o the_o neglecter_n of_o the_o gospel_n consider_v then_o how_o thou_o have_v sin_v in_o this_o last_o eye_n now_o this_o mark_n shall_v be_v right_o consider_v lest_o any_o that_o have_v not_o interest_n shall_v deceive_v themselves_o and_o lie_v hold_v of_o it_o one_o may_v love_v some_o good_a man_n where_o it_o have_v great_a disadvantage_n in_o regard_n of_o these_o as_o when_o a_o man_n want_v that_o measure_n of_o natural_a wisdom_n that_o be_v requisite_a perhaps_o to_o have_v through_o the_o weakness_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o want_v that_o measure_n of_o affability_n and_o amiableness_n that_o be_v requisite_a through_o the_o natural_a temper_n of_o his_o body_n look_v i_o say_v if_o in_o such_o a_o case_n thou_o love_v his_o goodness_n piety_n and_o holiness_n and_o not_o take_v prejudice_n against_o it_o but_o be_v such_o a_o one_o who_o do_v love_v and_o honour_v they_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n this_o mark_n in_o the_o psalm_n be_v set_v down_o somewhat_o different_o we_o must_v try_v ourselves_o by_o this_o it_o be_v true_a great_a man_n must_v have_v the_o outward_a respect_n their_o place_n speak_v honour_n to_o who_o honour_n but_o for_o the_o inward_a respect_n of_o the_o heart_n we_o shall_v see_v whether_o greatness_n or_o goodness_n carry_v it_o away_o certain_o those_o who_o have_v get_v their_o judgement_n rectify_v and_o renew_v to_o discern_v thing_n that_o differ_v or_o have_v their_o heart_n set_v upon_o the_o pursuit_n of_o grace_n will_v esteem_v more_o of_o it_o where_o it_o be_v then_o of_o all_o the_o greatness_n in_o the_o world_n a_o three_o mark_n be_v this_o faith_n purify_v the_o heart_n which_o may_v carry_v with_o it_o a_o double_a meaning_n to_o wit_n either_o this_o that_o whereas_o the_o hypocrite_n look_v only_o to_o the_o outward_a man_n but_o not_o to_o the_o hide_a man_n of_o the_o heart_n true_a faith_n it_o do_v far_o otherways_o for_o know_v that_o it_o have_v to_o do_v with_o the_o alseeing_a god_n the_o tryer_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o searcher_n of_o the_o reins_n he_o strive_v to_o keep_v clean_o his_o heart_n and_o to_o take_v heed_n to_o the_o thought_n of_o his_o heart_n aswell_o as_o to_o his_o outward_a action_n every_o one_o that_o have_v this_o hope_n purify_v himself_o but_o second_o this_o be_v not_o all_o faith_n purify_v the_o heart_n that_o be_v make_v a_o man_n not_o only_o make_v conscience_n of_o the_o thought_n and_o disposition_n of_o his_o heart_n to_o purify_v they_o but_o even_o also_o help_v he_o to_o purify_v it_o and_o purge_v it_o from_o the_o several_a corruption_n of_o it_o for_o through_o faith_n we_o get_v victory_n over_o all_o corruption_n this_o be_v our_o victory_n even_o our_o faith_n &_o by_o it_o we_o draw_v virtue_n from_o christ_n to_o cure_v our_o corruption_n so_o that_o faith_n by_o little_a and_o little_a purge_v the_o heart_n throughout_o obj._n o_o then_o i_o can_v have_v faith_n for_o i_o find_v my_o heart_n swarm_v with_o wicked_a and_o impure_a thought_n many_o great_a and_o gross_a corruption_n and_o some_o of_o they_o very_o strong_a and_o indeed_o predominant_a a._n 1._o that_o thy_o heart_n as_o thou_o think_v be_v so_o full_a of_o corruption_n be_v not_o that_o thy_o heart_n be_v more_o impure_a than_o other_o but_o that_o thou_o have_v a_o clear_a light_n and_o better_a sight_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n than_o other_o have_v thy_o heart_n be_v once_o more_o unclean_a when_o thou_o see_v it_o not_o '_o to_o be_v so_o now_o when_o thou_o see_v these_o small_a moat_n it_o be_v a_o token_n the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n have_v shine_v upon_o thou_o 2._o that_o faith_n purify_v the_o heart_n must_v be_v right_o understand_v for_o the_o meaning_n be_v not_o that_o faith_n do_v altogether_o purge_v and_o free_a the_o heart_n from_o sin_n who_o can_v say_v his_o heart_n be_v clean_a but_o this_o faith_n put_v a_o clean_a purify_n disposition_n into_o the_o heart_n so_o that_o it_o either_o resist_v it_o or_o reject_v sin_n or_o work_v it_o out_o although_o there_o be_v much_o of_o the_o filthiness_n of_o sin_n yet_o it_o still_o fight_v against_o it_o gainstand_v it_o work_v it_o out_o even_o as_o clean_a liquor_n do_v every_o unclean_a thing_n honey_n for_o example_n or_o as_o oil_n will_v be_v uppermost_a or_o as_o wine_n above_o the_o dregs_o when_o faith_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n the_o heart_n will_v not_o harbour_v sin_n thus_o it_o be_v say_v if_o i_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o my_o heart_n if_o there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o sinfulness_n in_o the_o heart_n yet_o if_o thou_o will_v be_v quit_v of_o it_o dislike_v it_o loathe_v it_o cry_v
thy_o mind_n but_o especial_o the_o sense_n of_o that_o great_a deliverance_n that_o great_a salvation_n so_o dear_o purchase_v that_o these_o may_v stir_v up_o thy_o love_n and_o love_n may_v be_v the_o motive_n of_o thy_o obedience_n and_o by_o reason_n that_o love_n flow_v from_o faith_n above_o all_o labour_n to_o hold_v thy_o faith_n stir_v and_o in_o action_n thus_o do_v david_n psal_n sensible_a although_o it_o be_v secret_a further_o especial_o in_o the_o beginning_n of_o christianity_n it_o be_v not_o sensible_a for_o the_o understanding_n whereof_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v three_o sort_n of_o motive_n of_o obedience_n 1._o one_o altogether_o wrong_a have_v no_o eye_n to_o god_n so_o to_o eschew_v the_o ill_a opinion_n of_o man_n many_o do_v sundry_a good_a duty_n and_o become_v neighbour_n like_o in_o outward_a duty_n of_o outward_a obedience_n other_o to_o win_v the_o praise_n of_o man_n will_v go_v beyond_o their_o neighbour_n yea_o possible_o beyond_o good_a christian_n there_o be_v sundry_a other_o by-respect_n and_o many_o by-road_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o natural_a man_n and_o hypocrite_n the_o second_o sort_n of_o motive_n be_v that_o which_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o begin_v christian_n which_o be_v not_o altogether_o right_a and_o yet_o some_o way_n right_a as_o introductorie_n to_o right_n as_o have_v a_o eye_n to_o god_n and_o as_o join_v with_o some_o weak_a faith_n and_o some_o insensible_a love_n this_o be_v the_o motive_n of_o fear_n flow_v from_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n which_o have_v take_v a_o deep_a impression_n in_o they_o and_o their_o faith_n be_v but_o weak_a and_o stagger_a as_o yet_o prevail_v with_o they_o and_o be_v the_o most_o sensible_a motive_n that_o put_v they_o on_o they_o do_v because_o they_o dare_v not_o do_v otherwise_o because_o they_o fear_v god_n justice_n and_o have_v a_o waken_n in_o their_o own_o conscience_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o altogether_o wrong_a for_o the_o respect_n aforesaid_a for_o why_o do_v the_o lord_n denounce_v so_o many_o threaten_n and_o judgement_n but_o for_o this_o and_o that_o all_o these_o shall_v have_v their_o own_o place_n with_o we_o yea_o why_o be_v our_o obedience_n so_o often_o waken_v up_o by_o rod_n cross_n and_o affliction_n if_o this_o sort_n of_o fear_n be_v altogether_o wrong_a but_o as_o faith_n and_o love_n grow_v strong_a by_o little_a and_o little_o they_o cast_v out_o fear_v and_o so_o come_v the_o three_o motive_n even_o that_o acceptable_a motive_n of_o love_n this_o be_v that_o which_o st._n john_n 1.4_o v._o 18._o have_v pâ—â—fect_a love_n cast_v out_o fear_n and_o again_o he_o that_o fear_v be_v not_o make_v perfect_a in_o love_n so_o that_o to_o work_v out_o of_o fear_n do_v not_o argue_v no_o love_n and_o so_o no_o faith_n but_o only_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o make_v perfect_a in_o love_n because_o of_o the_o weakness_n of_o thy_o faith_n labour_v then_o to_o strengthen_v thy_o faith_n that_o it_o may_v have_v more_o love_n for_o it_o flow_v from_o faith_n and_o be_v according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o thy_o faith_n grow_v as_o faith_n grow_v and_o do_v not_o give_v place_n to_o that_o main_a policy_n of_o satan_n and_o ordinary_a and_o incident_a weakness_n of_o many_o christian_n to_o darken_v thy_o faith_n because_o thou_o find_v thy_o love_n weak_a but_o as_o for_o thou_o that_o either_o work_v not_o at_o all_o or_o if_o thou_o do_v any_o thing_n it_o arise_v from_o wrong_a motive_n and_o end_n from_o custom_n and_o not_o from_o conscience_n to_o please_v man_n and_o not_o to_o please_v god_n neither_o fear_v he_o nor_o love_v he_o thou_o have_v no_o faith_n and_o so_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n a_o five_o mark_n and_o effect_n of_o faith_n be_v spiritual_a peace_n and_o joy_n for_o peace_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n for_o joy_n in_o who_o believe_v we_o rejoice_v with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a and_o both_o together_o rom._n 15.13_o now_o the_o god_n of_o hope_n fill_v you_o with_o jâ—y_n and_o peace_n in_o believe_v q._n but_o have_v not_o the_o wicked_a and_o much_o more_o precious_a then_o of_o gold_n that_o perish_v though_o it_o be_v try_v with_o the_o fire_n may_v be_v find_v to_o praise_v and_o honour_n and_o glory_n the_o sufficiency_n of_o a_o and_o this_o certain_o harden_v the_o heart_n of_o many_o a_o sinner_n as_o the_o scripture_n bear_v witness_v because_o sentence_n be_v not_o execute_v against_o the_o wicked_a speedy_o therefore_o thou_o be_v not_o deal_v with_o according_a to_o god_n justice_n and_o judgement_n and_o threaten_n be_v not_o from_o thy_o deserve_n but_o from_o the_o riches_n and_o the_o goodness_n long_o suffer_v and_o patience_n of_o the_o lord_n wait_v upon_o thy_o repentance_n which_o if_o thou_o despise_v when_o the_o date_n of_o it_o be_v run_v out_o thou_o shall_v find_v the_o truth_n of_o his_o threaten_n and_o the_o debt_n of_o his_o justice_n so_o much_o the_o great_a the_o other_o thing_n he_o reply_v be_v this_o although_o thou_o shall_v escape_v the_o lord_n justice_n and_o judgement_n all_o thy_o life_n time_n here_o what_o of_o that_o be_v there_o no_o other_o place_n for_o justice_n for_o judgement_n for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o god_n threaten_n then_o in_o this_o life_n be_v not_o the_o chief_a in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v alas_o thou_o consider_v not_o fare_v it_o with_o thou_o here_o as_o it_o will_v that_o yet_o thou_o be_v treasure_v up_o wrath_n against_o the_o the_o manner_n of_o obtain_v mercy_n first_o then_o i_o say_v they_o presume_v and_o misapply_v god_n mercy_n and_o christ_n merit_n to_o themselves_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o make_v many_o a_o soul_n to_o perish_v and_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o take_v heed_n unto_o it_o they_o acknowledge_v that_o they_o be_v sinner_n and_o that_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n do_v belong_v to_o well_o as_o other_o but_o the_o scripture_n say_v that_o many_o be_v call_v and_o but_o few_o be_v choose_v it_o say_v that_o many_o be_v deceive_v and_o why_o may_v not_o thou_o be_v deceive_v among_o the_o rest_n indeed_o if_o thou_o have_v ever_o be_v humble_v for_o thy_o bypass_a sin_n and_o so_o have_v flee_v unto_o christ_n and_o strive_v to_o rest_v upon_o he_o if_o thou_o have_v break_v off_o the_o course_n of_o thy_o iniquity_n and_o turn_v thy_o back_n upon_o thy_o sin_n and_o be_v endeavour_v to_o repent_v of_o what_o be_v past_a and_o to_o abstain_v for_o time_n to_o when_o they_o will_v and_o for_o a_o word_n o_o but_o let_v i_o tell_v such_o these_o thing_n be_v not_o so_o easy_o get_v and_o none_o so_o far_o from_o get_v mercy_n as_o they_o that_o presume_v upon_o it_o yea_o do_v not_o many_o of_o god_n child_n find_v it_o hard_o enough_o all_o their_o whole_a life_n to_o get_v faith_n repentance_n and_o mercy_n and_o will_v thou_o come_v so_o easy_o
