To the right Reverend the faithfull Ministers of Gods Word of Britain and Ireland RIGHT REVEREND GRace be to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. At the direction of the Generall Assembly at Edinburgh Anno 1644. I put my hand to the work of the Psalmes whereof I give to you now this last edition The work is for the publike service of God in his Church and it concerns you especially to endeavour by all meanes that this work may be done for the glory of God and edification of his people whose soules are committed to your charge That this may be done worthily diverse things in my ●…udgement are required First That the interpretation approven and received by our Church be not changed in the verse by any particular mans opinion for the interpreters in some dark places differ in opinions concerning the sense If the verse follow one interpretation and the Text another consider how impertinent that will bee Secondly That all dfficile words be shunned by reason that many people and children must sing that are unlearned Thirdly That so far as is possible no words of the Text be wanting for in the Text there be no idle words or superfluities to be retrinched as in mens discourse Fourthly If any words be added that they be pertinent to make the sense clear as we see in the Text some words added which are printed in smaller letters PSAL. 16. 2. PSAL. 27. 8. PSAL. 54. 17. c. Fiftly A speciall care would be had that the verse be very clear and easie to be understood by the most ignorant that unlearned people and children may as Gods word directs PSAL. 47. 7. Saint PAUL is a great enemie to obscurity and all faithfull Pastours must and will set their face against it in all things that concerne the soules that their Master hath bought with his bloud and concredited to them Let therefore all difficle words be shunned that are not in the Bible as for the words of the Bible all should understand them Sixthly A speciall care would be had that so far as may be the words of the Text be not changed with any other that those that have their Bibles before them may read the words of the text in the song when other words are in the verse the Text seemeth uncouth to him that readeth or singeth It greatly edifies when the words of the Song are the words of the Text and this would be very carefully considered and aimed at by all that meddle with the tryall of our labours that most diligently they compare the words of the verse with the words of the Text that none thereof be wanting nor any others put into their place so far as is possible to do the same the Text must be the only touchstone for tryall Seventhly He that medleth with such a work would have good understanding in the Hebrew which is the Originall and fountaine The want of this or the not taking heed hath made all English verse that I have seen make a very great fault in mistaking that which is said of God himself in the PSAL. 82. 1. where it is said God standeth in the congregation of the mighty he judgeth among the gods All the Psalmes in English verse that I have seen by the mighty there understand mighty men which is a very great mistake the Originall Hebrew clearly lets us see that it is God himself that is there called El those be the words Elohim nitsav bagnadath El that is is Piseator in his version hath very well Deus stat in coetu Dei which he interpreteth thus hoc est Deus stat in coetu suo id est in coetu a se ordinato Our English version in this verse would be mended where as it h●…th God standeth in the Assembly of th●… mighty it were better and more clear to put God standeth in the Assembly of God Now right Reverend this is my last labour which I have set down with the Text interlined that the judicious reader may have under his eye both the Text and the verse and may thē more easily confer them together and discerne I desire that no man esteem that in a mercenary way I am seeking gain by those my labours though the work hath been both painfull and chargeable I with a most willing mind offer all in a free-will offering to the Lord seek gaines who will I will have none nor do I stand in need praised bee the Lord I hope the judicious Reader shall finde this last edition mended in many things If any thing hath been observed by any in the former editions let them consider if it bee mended in this last which as I have hitherto done I submit in all humlity to the judgement of my Brethren in the Ministry The spirits of the Prophets are subject to the Prophets 1 Cor. 14. 32. their enemies there was not one of them left 12 Then beleeved they his words they sang his praise 11 Their foes the waters covered of them left was not one 12 Then they believed all his words they sang his praise anone 13 They soon forgat his works they waited not for his counsell 14 But lusted exceedingly in the wildernesse and tempted God in the desert 13 They soon forgate his works they for his counsell not abode 14 But lusted much in wildernesse in desert tempted God 15 And he gave them their request but sent leannesse into their soul. 16 They envied Moses also in the camp and Aaron the saint of the Lord. 15 He gave them their request but to their soul he leannesse sent 16 In Camp they Moses did envy and Aaron the Lords Saint 17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan and covered the company of Abiram 27 The earth below it opened and Dathan by and by Did swallow up and covered Abirams company 18 And a fire was kindled in their company the flamme burnt up the wicked 18 And likewise in their company a fire was kindled then The flame thereof that did break forth burnt up the wicked men 19 They made a calf in Horeb and worshipped the molten image 19 Upon the hill of Horeb al 's a golden calf they made And to the image worship gave that there they molten had 20 Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grasse 20 Thus he that was their glory then by them there changed was Into the likenesse of an Ox that eateth up the grasse 21 They forgat God their Saviour which had done great things in Egypt 21 They God their Saviour so forgat which by his mighty hand Had in his favour to them done great things in Egypt land 22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham and terrible things in the Red sea 22 Most wondrous works within the land of Ham performed he And things that were most terrible even hard by the red sea 23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach to turn away his wrath lest he should destroy them 23 Therefore he said he would them slay had Moses his choise one Not stood in breach to turn his wrath from their destruction 24 Yea they despised the pleasant land they beleeved not his word 25 But murmured in their tents and hearkned not unto the voice of the Lord. 24 Yea they despisde the pleasant land they not believ'd his word 25 But murmur'd in their tents and not the voice heard of the Lord. 26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them to overthrow them in the wildernesse 7 To overthrow their seed also among the nations and to scatter them in the lands 26 Therefore in desert them to slay 'gainst them he lifts his hands 27 'Mong nations to ov'rthrow their seed and scatter in the lands 28 They joyned themselves also unto Baal-Peor and ate the sacrifices of the dead 28 To Baal-Peor also they did joine themselves indeed And sacrifices ate that were then offred to the dead 29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions and the plague brake in upon them 29 Thus unto anger they him there provoked by the sin Of their own ill inventions the plague on them brake in 30 Then stood up Phinehas and executed judgement and so the plague was stayed 30 But Phinehas then there did stand up and judgement he that day Did execute and so at last the fearfull plague did stay 31 And that was counted unto him for righteousnesse unto all generations for evermore 31 And unto him for righteousnesse that counted was therefore Yea unto generations all and that for evermore 32 They angred him also at the waters of strife so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes 32 They at the waters al 's of strife then did him angry make So that it there went very ill with Moses for their sake 33 Because they provoked his spirit so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips 33 Because that they his Spirit thus provoked bitterly So that he did then with his lips speak unadvisedly 34 They did not destroy the nations concerning whom the Lord commanded them 35 But were mingled among the heathen and learned their works 34 They as the Lord commanded them the Nations did not slay 35 But 'mong the heathen mingled were and learned so their way 36 And they served their idoles which were a snare unto them 37 Yee they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils 36 And they their idols then did serve which were to them a snare 37 Yea they to devils did sacrifice their sons and daughters there 38 And shed innocent blood even the blood of their sons and of their daughters whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan 38 Bloud innocent yea ev'n their Sons and daughters bloud they shed Whom to Canaans idols they then sacrifices made And the land was polluted with blood 29 Thus were they defiled with their ow works and went a whoring with their own in ventions The land polluted was with blood 39 Their works them did defile And so they then a whooring went with their inventions vile 40 Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance 40 Against his people kindled was the wrath of God therefore In so much that he did his own inheritance abhorre 41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen and they that hated them ruled over them 41 And he in wrath them gave into the hand of heathen men And they that them did greatly hate them overruled then 42 Their enemies also oppressed them and they were brought into subjection under their 〈◊〉 42 They that al 's were their enemies oppressd them in the land And they into subjection were brought underneath their hand 43 Many times did he deliver them but they provoked him with their counsell and were brought low for their iniquity 43 He many times deliv'red them but with their counsel they Did him provoke and were brought low for their iniquity 44 Neverthelesse he regarded their affliction when he heard their cry 45 And he remembred for them his covenant 44 Yet he their trouble did regard when as their cry he heard 45 And he the cov'nant that was his for them remembered And repented according to the multitude of his mercies 46 He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives After his mercies multitude 46 he did repent And made Them to be piti'd of all that them captives carri'd had 47 Save us O Lord our God and gather us from among the heathen to give thanks unto thy holy name Lord alone did lead him carefully And no strange god there was at all with him in company 13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth that he might eat the increase of the fields and he made him to suck hony out of the rock and oil out of the flinty rock 13 On earths high place he made him ride fields increase for to eat From flinty rocks he made him suck the oyl and honey sweet 14 Butter of kine and milk of sheep with fat of lambs and rams of the breed of Bashan 14 Of Kine the butter and of sheep the milk for them in need With fat of lambs and also rams that were of Bashans breed And goats with the fat of kidneys of wheat and thou didst drink the pure bloud of the grape He gave them goats with Kidneys fat of wheat that was right good And thou also ev'n of the grape didst drink the purest blood The second Part. 15 But Iesurun waxed fat and kicked thou art waxen fat thou art grown thick 15 But Jesurun then waxed fat and he did also kick Thou waxed art exceeding fat thou art grown very thick Thou art covered with fatnesse then he forsook God which made him and lightly esteemed the rock of his salvation With fatnesse thou art cov'rd he then GOD which him made forsook And he of his salvations rock light estimation took 16 They provocked him to jealousie with strange gods with abominations provoked they him to anger 16 They him provok'd to jealousie with strange gods evry way Him with abominations to wrath provoked they 17 They sacrificed unto devils not to God to gods whom they knew not to new gods that came newly up whom your fathers feared not 17 To dev'ls not God they sacrific'd to gods whom they not knew New gods whom not your fathers fear'd that were come up of new 18 Of the rock that begat thee thou art unmindfull and hast forgotten God that formed thee 18 Thou art unmindfull of the rock which once thee did beget And God himself that formed thee thou likewise didst forget The third Part. 19 And when the Lord saw it he abhorred them because of the provocking of his sons and of his daughters 19 And when the Lord it saw he did abhor them evry one Because of the provoking great of daughter and of son 20 And he said I will hide my face from them I will see what their end shall be for they are a very froward generation children in whom is no faith 20 He said I 'le hide from them my face and I their end will see For they a very froward race and faithlesse children be 21 They have moved me to jealousie with that which is not God they have provoked me to anger with their vanities 21 With that which is not God they have me mov'd to jealousie To anger they have me provok'd ev'n with their vanitie And I will move them to jealousie with those which are not a people I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation And I 'le them move to jealousie with such as are no flock Them with a foolish nation to anger I 'le provoke 22 For a fire is kindled in my anger and shall burn unto the lowest hell and shall consume the earth with her increase and set on fire the foundations of the mountains 22 For fire is kindled in my wrath it burns to lowest hell Earths increase hills foundations consume and fire it shall 23 I will heap mischiefs upon them I will spend mine arrows upon them 23 Upon them likewise great mischiefes most surely heap I will And in mine anger I will spend on them mine arrows ill 24 They shall be burnt with hunger and devoured with burning heat and with bitter destruction 24 They shall be altogether burnt with pain of hunger great And with destruction bitter al 's devour'd with burning heat I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them with the poyson of serpents of the dust I also will the teeth of beasts upon them fiercely thrust Ev'n with the poison that is of the serpents of the dust 25 The sword without and terrour within shall destroy both the young man and the virgin the suckling also with the man of gray hairs 25 The sword without terrour within the young man shall destroy The virgin and the suckling al 's with him whose haires are gray 26 I said I would scatter them into corners I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men 26 I said that into corners I would them all scatter then I would make their remembrance al 's to cease from among men 27 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely 27 Yea were it not I fear'd the wrath of th' enemy they have And lest that their adversaries should strangely them behave And lest they should say Our hand is high and the Lord hath not done all this And lest that they with hauty heart should say these words an one Our hand now high is and the Lord this work all hath not done 28 For they are a nation void of counsell neither is there any understanding in them 29 O that they were wise that they understood this that they would consider their latter end 28 For of counsell a Nation void they are nothing know they 29 O that they wise this understood and their last end would weigh 30 How should one chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight except their Rock had sold them and the Lord had shut them up 30 How should but one a thousand chase and two chase thousands ten Except their Rock thus had them sold and them shut up had then 31 For their rock is not as our Rock even our enemies themselves being judges 31 For in no way the rock that 's theirs as our Rock mighty is Our enemies themselves they are the judges ev'n of this 32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom and of the fields of Gomorrah their grapes are grapes of gall their clusters are bitter 32 Of Sodoms vine and Gomors fields their vine is surely all Their clusters they most bitter are their grapes are grapes of gall 33 Their wine is the poison of dragons and the cruell venime of aspes 34 Is not this laid up in store with me and sealed up among my treasures 33 Their wine of dragons poison is of asps the venim strong 34 Is not this laid in store with me my treasures seal'd among The fourth Part. 35 To me belongeth vengeance and recompence their foot shall slide in due time 35 Vengeance to me and recompence belongeth for their crime Their foot shall slide assuredly in due appointed time For the day of their calamity is at hand and the things that shall come upon them make haste The day of their calamity it is now near at hand And things that shall upon them come make
