pass_v censure_n upon_o his_o own_o way_n and_o action_n before_o which_o his_o thought_n accuse_v or_o excuse_v one_o another_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v rom._n 2.15_o must_v needs_o have_v usual_o some_o sense_n of_o every_o know_a sin_n either_o more_o or_o less_o whence_o it_o follow_v that_o the_o more_o the_o conscience_n be_v enlighten_v and_o by_o that_o mean_v awaken_v to_o terror_n the_o ground_n of_o spiritual_a terror_n and_o fear_v of_o the_o punishment_n that_o follow_v it_o the_o cause_n that_o affect_v a_o godly_a
while_o the_o whole_a nature_n of_o mankind_n be_v in_o our_o first_o parent_n upon_o that_o ground_n therefore_o suppose_v and_o grant_v by_o all_o we_o thus_o argue_v that_o which_o moses_n relate_v and_o sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n be_v from_o the_o beginning_n beside_o the_o series_n of_o the_o history_n sanctify_a and_o by_o the_o term_n bless_v and_o sanctify_a which_o be_v a_o strong_a &_o more_o convince_a argument_n to_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v so_o than_o any_o that_o be_v or_o can_v be_v allege_v to_o prove_v the_o contrary_a may_v be_v evineed_a and_o far_o make_v good_a by_o these_o reason_n first_o we_o find_v the_o lord_n himself_o in_o the_o four_o commandment_n affirm_v that_o he_o have_v bless_v and_o sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n day_n for_o so_o all_o the_o interpreter_n render_v these_o word_n according_a to_o the_o most_o proper_a signification_n of_o they_o in_o the_o original_a tongue_n as_o remember_v and_o refer_v unto_o a_o act_n do_v before_o the_o give_n of_o the_o law_n past_a repeat_v in_o the_o four_o commandment_n and_o point_v at_o a_o act_n past_a now_o we_o find_v in_o no_o place_n of_o scripture_n any_o mention_n of_o the_o lord_n blessing_n &_o sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n day_n before_o the_o publish_n of_o the_o decalogue_n upon_o mount_n sinai_n but_o in_o this_o only_a gen._n 2.3_o neither_o do_v those_o that_o deny_v the_o morality_n of_o the_o sabbath_n mention_n or_o suppose_v any_o time_n precedent_n to_o the_o delivery_n of_o the_o law_n by_o moses_n wherein_o god_n bless_a and_o sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n day_n neither_o if_o any_o such_o thing_n have_v be_v do_v by_o god_n will_v the_o scripture_n have_v omit_v the_o record_v of_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o so_o great_a importance_n neither_o last_o beginning_n 3._o neither_o be_v any_o time_n so_o fit_a for_o give_v this_o law_n of_o the_o sabbath_n as_o in_o the_o beginning_n be_v there_o any_o time_n so_o fit_a for_o the_o give_v of_o this_o law_n as_o when_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o institution_n of_o this_o holy_a rest_n which_o be_v god_n manifest_v of_o the_o perfect_a of_o the_o world_n creation_n by_o his_o rest_v on_o that_o day_n be_v new_a and_o fresh_a in_o memory_n this_o reason_n take_v from_o the_o fitness_n of_o the_o time_n for_o the_o enact_v and_o publish_v of_o this_o law_n carry_v with_o it_o the_o great_a weight_n he_o take_v care_n to_o ordain_v they_o when_o the_o mercy_n be_v yet_o fresh_a and_o new_a for_o the_o preserve_n of_o the_o memory_n whereof_o they_o be_v appoint_v the_o same_o course_n the_o church_n take_v afterward_o in_o the_o ordain_v of_o the_o feast_n of_o purim_n wherein_o both_o the_o occasion_n and_o institution_n of_o the_o feast_n go_v both_o together_o nay_o even_o the_o heathen_a themselves_o by_o the_o very_a light_n of_o nature_n be_v direct_v to_o follow_v the_o same_o rule_n as_o all_o man_n know_v but_o the_o strong_a and_o clear_a argument_n to_o prove_v the_o institution_n of_o the_o sabbath_n by_o god_n from_o the_o beginning_n be_v the_o testimony_n of_o the_o apostle_n 4._o the_o apostle_n affirm_v it_o heb._n 4.3_o 4._o heb._n 4.3.4_o in_o these_o rest_n of_o heaven_n be_v this_o in_o brief_a the_o rest_n which_o david_n mention_n in_o that_o place_n must_v needs_o be_v such_o a_o rest_n as_o the_o man_n to_o who_o he_o speak_v have_v not_o enter_v into_o for_o then_o it_o have_v be_v a_o vain_a thing_n to_o threaten_v to_o shut_v they_o out_o of_o that_o which_o they_o have_v already_o in_o possession_n but_o have_v a_o possibility_n to_o enter_v in_o it_o or_o else_o it_o be_v a_o like_a folly_n to_o threaten_v that_o as_o a_o judgement_n upon_o they_o to_o deprive_v they_o of_o that_o which_o they_o shall_v never_o have_v any_o possibility_n to_o obtain_v but_o say_v the_o apostle_n there_o be_v no_o such_o rest_n to_o be_v enter_v into_o by_o they_o in_o david_n time_n but_o only_o the_o rest_n of_o heaven_n therefore_o david_n in_o that_o place_n cite_v by_o the_o apostle_n can_v mean_v no_o other_o rest_n but_o the_o rest_n of_o heaven_n to_o make_v good_a this_o argument_n he_o give_v a_o sufficient_a enumeration_n of_o all_o the_o kind_n of_o rest_n which_o be_v possible_a to_o be_v mean_v by_o david_n in_o the_o place_n allege_v which_o must_v all_o of_o they_o have_v this_o condition_n that_o they_o may_v be_v enter_v into_o by_o man_n which_o be_v three_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o sabbath_n the_o rest_n of_o canaan_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o heaven_n into_o all_o which_o man_n have_v a_o possibility_n to_o enter_v now_o the_o rest_n out_o of_o which_o they_o be_v threaten_v to_o be_v exclude_v must_v be_v a_o rest_n which_o they_o have_v not_o already_o enter_v into_o but_o say_v our_o apostle_n into_o two_o of_o these_o rest_v man_n have_v enter_v before_o david_n time_n into_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o sabbath_n from_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o world_n in_o which_o god_n rest_v after_o he_o have_v perfect_v his_o work_n and_o into_o the_o rest_n of_o canaan_n
the_o sabbath_n be_v altogether_o needless_a and_o superfluous_a three_o they_o insist_v strong_o upon_o this_o that_o if_o god_n have_v give_v adam_n such_o a_o law_n at_o that_o time_n then_o have_v the_o patriarch_n be_v bind_v to_o the_o observation_n of_o that_o law_n now_o say_v they_o if_o the_o patriarch_n have_v be_v bind_v to_o the_o observation_n of_o that_o law_n they_o have_v certain_o keep_v it_o but_o that_o neither_o all_o or_o any_o of_o they_o observe_v any_o such_o be_v manifest_a by_o the_o history_n of_o their_o life_n write_v by_o moses_n wherein_o there_o be_v no_o mention_n of_o any_o such_o thing_n for_o the_o first_o of_o these_o three_o argument_n which_o be_v answer_v to_o the_o first_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o adam_n in_o paradise_n to_o keep_v a_o sabbath_n they_o reason_v thus_o the_o sabbath_n say_v they_o be_v appoint_v for_o the_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n sabbath_n 1._o that_o suppose_v public_a worship_n to_o be_v the_o whole_a duty_n of_o the_o sabbath_n as_o all_o man_n must_v needs_o acknowledge_v but_o adam_n and_o his_o wife_n can_v not_o make_v a_o public_a assembly_n nor_o consequent_o worship_v god_n public_o nor_o by_o the_o same_o observe_v a_o sabbath_n according_a to_o the_o law_n to_o this_o we_o answer_v in_o the_o first_o place_n though_o public_a worship_n be_v the_o principal_a yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o sole_a duty_n of_o the_o sabbath_n honour_v god_n forbear_v to_o do_v one_o own_o way_n or_o to_o find_v his_o own_o pleasure_n or_o to_o speak_v one_o own_o word_n be_v duty_n of_o such_o a_o holy_a day_n of_o rest_n as_o god_n delight_v in_o isa_n 58.13_o as_o well_o as_o public_a worship_n and_o the_o four_o commandment_n which_o set_v apart_o a_o whole_a day_n unto_o the_o lord_n entire_o and_o command_v therein_o a_o total_a cessation_n from_o all_o our_o employment_n in_o our_o ordinary_a call_n make_v it_o evident_a the_o sequester_v of_o ourselves_o from_o our_o ordinary_a secular_a affair_n for_o religious_a duty_n be_v the_o full_a scope_n of_o that_o four_o commandment_n which_o if_o a_o single_a person_n shut_v out_o by_o sickness_n or_o any_o other_o casual_a accident_n from_o public_a assembly_n perform_v he_o keep_v a_o acceptable_a sabbath_n unto_o god_n though_o he_o can_v join_v with_o the_o congregation_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o public_a worship_n again_o why_o may_v not_o two_o person_n where_o there_o be_v no_o more_o assembly_n 2._o two_o where_o no_o more_o be_v may_v be_v esteem_v a_o public_a assembly_n be_v esteem_v to_o be_v a_o public_a assembly_n it_o be_v clear_a that_o our_o saviour_n esteem_v the_o meeting_n of_o two_o or_o three_o for_o prayer_n a_o gather_v together_o mat._n 18.20_o and_o then_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o adam_n and_o eve_n meet_v together_o in_o paradise_n and_o employ_v the_o whole_a day_n in_o prayer_n and_o other_o holy_a and_o religious_a exercise_n may_v in_o a_o true_a and_o proper_a sense_n be_v say_v to_o worship_v public_o so_o that_o in_o this_o argument_n bring_v against_o possibility_n of_o keep_v a_o sabbath_n by_o adam_n and_o eve_n in_o paradise_n it_o 3._o it_o be_v no_o good_a argument_n adam_n can_v not_o then_o keep_v the_o sabbath_n therefore_o he_o have_v no_o law_n for_o it_o the_o proposition_n be_v both_o faulty_a beside_o this_o be_v no_o good_a argument_n adam_n and_o eve_n can_v not_o at_o that_o present_a keep_v a_o sabbath_n therefore_o they_o have_v no_o law_n give_v they_o by_o god_n to_o command_v it_o the_o five_o commandment_n prescribe_v the_o duty_n of_o parent_n to_o their_o child_n be_v questionless_a a_o law_n of_o nature_n shall_v we_o say_v that_o this_o law_n be_v not_o at_o the_o least_o write_v in_o adam_n heart_n from_o the_o beginning_n because_o he_o have_v then_o no_o child_n we_o think_v it_o wisdom_n to_o make_v law_n for_o war_n in_o time_n of_o peace_n although_o there_o can_v be_v no_o execution_n of_o they_o for_o the_o present_a the_o next_o argument_n against_o the_o institution_n of_o the_o sabbath_n in_o paradise_n answer_v to_o the_o second_o be_v that_o then_o adam_n need_v no_o sabbath_n neither_o for_o his_o body_n nor_o for_o his_o mind_n for_o his_o body_n they_o say_v he_o need_v no_o sabbath_n because_o that_o he_o be_v exercise_v in_o no_o painful_a or_o toilsome_a labour_n but_o exercise_v only_o in_o such_o work_n as_o may_v be_v account_v rather_o a_o recreation_n then_o a_o labour_n need_v no_o rest_n at_o all_o or_o refresh_n of_o his_o body_n thereby_o sabbath_n 1._o ease_n by_o rest_n though_o it_o be_v a_o consequent_a be_v not_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o sabbath_n to_o this_o we_o answer_v that_o the_o ease_n of_o man_n and_o beast_n from_o labour_n although_o it_o be_v a_o consequent_a of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o sabbath_n yet_o be_v it_o never_o the_o scope_n of_o it_o see_v the_o moderation_n of_o labour_n belong_v proper_o to_o the_o same_o commandment_n which_o enjoin_v labour_n that_o be_v unto_o the_o eight_o as_o the_o apostle_n also_o interpret_v it_o eph._n 4.28_o the_o four_o commandment_n forbid_v labour_n indeed_o but_o not_o so_o much_o for_o mercy_n as_o for_o piety_n nor_o so_o much_o for_o ease_v of_o the_o toil_n of_o the_o body_n as_o for_o the_o prevent_n of_o the_o distraction_n of_o the_o mind_n by_o labour_n see_v we_o know_v the_o body_n can_v labour_v but_o the_o mind_n must_v needs_o be_v more_o or_o less_o employ_v withal_o which_o therefore_o at_o that_o time_n can_v so_o free_o be_v whole_o exercise_v in_o spiritual_a duty_n as_o it_o ought_v so_o that_o adam_n may_v have_v use_n of_o a_o sabbath_n in_o paradise_n although_o he_o need_v it_o not_o for_o the_o ease_n of_o his_o body_n mind_n 2._o adam_n may_v make_v use_n of_o the_o sabbath_n in_o respect_n of_o his_o mind_n yea_o but_o say_v they_o adam_z much_o less_o need_v a_o sabbath_n in_o respect_n of_o his_o mind_n than_o he_o do_v in_o respect_n of_o his_o body_n because_o his_o mind_n in_o that_o state_n of_o innocency_n be_v continual_o fill_v with_o heavenly_a thought_n he_o can_v not_o choose_v but_o keep_v a_o perpetual_a sabbath_n to_o this_o objection_n we_o have_v answer_v in_o part_n already_o that_o the_o sabbath_n require_v of_o we_o not_o only_o the_o fill_n of_o the_o mind_n with_o heavenly_a meditation_n but_o beside_o a_o total_a sequestration_n of_o the_o whole_a man_n to_o the_o exercise_n of_o all_o holy_a duty_n forbid_v we_o to_o find_v our_o own_o pleasure_n or_o our_o own_o way_n isa_n 58.13_o that_o be_v take_v up_o any_o employment_n either_o of_o body_n or_o mind_n about_o any_o of_o those_o affair_n which_o may_v proper_o becal_v our_o own_o such_o as_o be_v all_o our_o secular_a affair_n now_o although_o adam_n in_o paradise_n have_v not_o in_o that_o ease_n and_o pleasure_n of_o he_o in_o keep_v the_o garden_n his_o mind_n so_o whole_o take_v up_o with_o that_o business_n as_o we_o be_v now_o in_o our_o more_o toilsome_a work_n yet_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v and_o be_v his_o duty_n too_o to_o attend_v and_o to_o have_v his_o mind_n exercise_v in_o the_o thought_n of_o those_o thing_n that_o he_o take_v in_o hand_n which_o on_o the_o sabbath_n ought_v to_o be_v whole_o lay_v aside_o in_o one_o word_n adam_n be_v and_o ought_v on_o other_o day_n to_o be_v whole_o heavenly_a mind_v in_o the_o use_n of_o earthly_a thing_n but_o on_o the_o sabbath_n day_n he_o be_v to_o be_v whole_o heavenly_a mind_v in_o the_o use_n of_o heavenly_a thing_n all_o then_o that_o can_v be_v make_v good_a in_o this_o parcular_a be_v only_o this_o that_o adam_n in_o some_o respect_v less_o need_v a_o sabbath_n than_o we_o do_v whence_o can_v possible_o be_v infer_v that_o he_o therefore_o need_v none_o at_o all_o nay_o upon_o the_o same_o ground_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o because_o he_o be_v ripe_a in_o knowledge_n strong_a in_o faith_n and_o more_o quicken_v and_o fervent_a in_o affection_n less_o need_v the_o sacrament_n or_o other_o like_a help_n as_o we_o do_v it_o be_v not_o fit_a for_o he_o to_o have_v any_o sacrament_n at_o all_o etc._n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o sacrament_n etc._n etc._n rather_o we_o may_v conclude_v that_o because_o adam_n infinite_o excel_v we_o in_o all_o these_o ability_n therefore_o though_o he_o less_o need_v yet_o he_o be_v more_o fit_a to_o keep_v a_o sabbath_n than_o we_o be_v have_v more_o leisure_n and_o be_v more_o heavenly_a mind_v than_o we_o be_v all_o this_o while_n we_o speak_v of_o the_o sabbath_n as_o if_o it_o be_v give_v to_o man_n only_o for_o his_o own_o good_a whereas_o the_o principal_a scope_n of_o it_o be_v the_o honour_v of_o god_n which_o be_v adam_n duty_n as_o well_o as_o we_o so_o that_o in_o respect_n of_o
they_o have_v never_o hear_v before_o yea_o neither_o the_o elder_n nor_o any_o of_o the_o people_n so_o much_o as_o inquire_v of_o moses_n what_o he_o mean_v by_o that_o name_n of_o a_o sabbath_n as_o they_o will_v have_v do_v if_o the_o name_n have_v be_v new_a unto_o they_o but_o depart_v satisfy_v with_o moses_n his_o answer_n without_o any_o far_a scruple_n or_o enquiry_n beside_o the_o lord_n by_o moses_n rebuke_v those_o that_o contrary_a to_o god_n commandment_n go_v out_o to_o seek_v food_n on_o the_o sabbath_n day_n express_v himself_o to_o they_o in_o this_o manner_n how_o long_o will_v you_o refuse_v to_o keep_v my_o commandment_n and_o my_o law_n imply_v that_o this_o be_v a_o continue_a breach_n of_o the_o sabbath_n as_o well_o as_o of_o other_o law_n of_o god_n by_o all_o those_o circumstance_n lay_v together_o and_o due_o weigh_v it_o will_v appear_v that_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o sabbath_n be_v well_o know_v to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n by_o a_o long_a continue_a law_n deliver_v from_o hand_n to_o hand_n to_o posterity_n although_o in_o process_n of_o time_n much_o disuse_v and_o neglect_v by_o man_n in_o the_o course_n of_o their_o practice_n especial_o in_o the_o egyptian_a bondage_n to_o elude_v the_o force_n of_o this_o argument_n objection_n 16_o day_n the_o sabbath_n be_v not_o institute_v till_o exod._n 16._o and_o upon_o occasion_n of_o a_o double_a miracle_n 1._o the_o give_v of_o a_o double_a portion_n of_o manna_n on_o the_o sixth_o day_n 2._o and_o preserve_v it_o uncorrupted_a till_o the_o next_o day_n god_n and_o by_o his_o satisfaction_n and_o suffering_n be_v deliver_v from_o the_o wrath_n to_o come_v by_o the_o consideration_n whereof_o we_o be_v bring_v to_o prize_n and_o value_n christ_n above_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o use_v all_o endeavour_n to_o get_v a_o sure_a interest_n in_o he_o although_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o the_o loss_n of_o all_o thing_n beside_o and_o to_o cleave_v fast_o unto_o he_o who_o be_v our_o life_n live_v in_o he_o by_o faith_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v gal._n 2.20_o give_v up_o ourselves_o to_o live_v whole_o to_o he_o who_o have_v die_v for_o we_o and_o redeem_v we_o unto_o himself_o that_o we_o may_v serve_v he_o in_o holiness_n all_o our_o day_n thus_o far_o then_o of_o the_o moral_a law_n and_o the_o use_n thereof_o ceremonial_a of_o law_n ceremonial_a the_o next_o kind_n of_o law_n which_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v be_v those_o which_o we_o call_v ceremonial_a because_o they_o prescribe_v the_o rule_n of_o those_o ceremony_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n nor_o indeed_o can_v use_v many_o of_o they_o without_o the_o deny_v of_o christ_n come_v in_o the_o flesh_n notwithstanding_o see_v it_o have_v please_v the_o lord_n to_o leave_v both_o they_o and_o the_o judicial_a law_n upon_o record_n among_o those_o holy_a writing_n which_o he_o have_v think_v fit_a to_o preserve_v and_o to_o commit_v unto_o the_o church_n to_o be_v keep_v for_o posterity_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n we_o can_v conceive_v that_o he_o have_v take_v so_o much_o care_n to_o preserve_v they_o in_o vain_a nor_o indeed_o for_o any_o other_o end_n than_o that_o which_o be_v the_o scope_n of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o scripture_n they_o yet_o may_v they_o be_v of_o use_n to_o we_o in_o read_v they_o that_o they_o may_v be_v for_o our_o learning_n and_o instruction_n what_o instruction_n therefore_o we_o may_v gather_v to_o ourselves_o by_o read_v these_o law_n we_o be_v now_o to_o consider_v and_o that_o the_o rather_o because_o many_o man_n upon_o this_o opinion_n and_o supposition_n that_o these_o law_n be_v now_o utter_o abolish_v to_o we_o christian_n either_o total_o neglect_v the_o read_n of_o those_o book_n name_n 1._o in_o that_o they_o be_v shadow_n of_o christ_n it_o prove_v that_o from_o the_o begin_n there_o be_v no_o salvation_n but_o in_o his_o name_n as_o contain_v those_o thing_n that_o concern_v they_o not_o or_o at_o least_o read_v they_o in_o such_o a_o perfunctory_a manner_n without_o search_v into_o they_o that_o they_o receive_v no_o profit_n nor_o instruction_n by_o they_o at_o all_o that_o we_o may_v therefore_o show_v what_o instruction_n the_o read_n of_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n may_v yield_v we_o we_o must_v first_o take_v notice_n that_o these_o ceremony_n may_v be_v rank_v under_o two_o head_n for_o they_o be_v either_o figure_n that_o
