itself_o and_o not_o frequent_v in_o the_o common_a use_n of_o man_n as_o after_o this_o manner_n the_o apostle_n call_v the_o vocation_n of_o the_o gentile_n a_o mystery_n 5.32_o ephes_n 3.9_o ephes_n 5.32_o this_o conjunction_n which_o be_v begin_v here_o betwixt_o we_o and_o christ_n be_v call_v a_o mystery_n and_o the_o latin_a interpreter_n call_v it_o a_o sacrament_n and_o to_o be_v short_a you_o will_v not_o find_v in_o the_o book_n of_o god_n a_o word_n more_o frequent_a than_o the_o word_n mystery_n but_o as_o for_o the_o word_n sacrament_n whereby_o they_o interpret_v the_o not_o cease_v while_o the_o world_n last_v whereas_o if_o they_o have_v keep_v the_o apostle_n word_n and_o call_v they_o as_o the_o apostle_n call_v they_o sign_n and_o seal_n all_o this_o digladiation_n strife_n and_o contention_n appear_o have_v not_o fall_v out_o but_o where_o man_n will_v be_v wise_a than_o god_n and_o give_v name_n to_o thing_n without_o warrant_n from_o god_n that_o be_v use_v in_o the_o action_n but_o only_o for_o the_o material_a and_o earthly_a thing_n the_o element_n as_o for_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o supper_n and_o water_n in_o baptism_n and_o after_o this_o sort_n say_v augustine_n the_o wicked_a eat_v
will_v come_v in_o your_o mind_n and_o it_o will_v signify_v unto_o you_o that_o that_o be_v the_o king_n picture_n so_o if_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o sacrament_n do_v no_o further_o all_o picture_n signify_v by_o the_o wine_n but_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n only_o thou_o can_v not_o say_v that_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n be_v christ_n it_o be_v but_o a_o part_n of_o christ_n thou_o can_v not_o say_v that_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n be_v whole_a christ_n it_o be_v but_o a_o part_n of_o he_o and_o a_o piece_n of_o thy_o saviour_n save_v thou_o not_o a_o part_n of_o thy_o saviour_n couple_v nor_o conjoin_v with_o other_o but_o so_o far_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o will_v suffer_v if_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o will_v not_o suffer_v a_o conjunction_n they_o can_v be_v conjoin_v so_o it_o be_v that_o the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n and_o grace_n be_v perform_v and_o make_v effectual_a not_o in_o bread_n and_o wine_n but_o in_o faithful_a man_n &_o woman_n therefore_o these_o promise_n shall_v be_v direct_v to_o faithful_a man_n &_o woman_n now_o here_o be_v the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n &_o grace_n this_o be_v my_o body_n which_o be_v break_v for_o you_o and_o this_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o no_o other_o thing_n but_o to_o the_o faithful_a and_o so_o to_o they_o only_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v direct_v second_o we_o have_v to_o consider_v that_o this_o sacrament_n seal_v up_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n now_o with_o who_o will_v god_n make_v his_o covenant_n of_o mercy_n and_o grace_n will_v he_o make_v a_o covenant_n with_o a_o piece_n of_o bread_n or_o any_o dumb_a element_n there_o be_v no_o man_n will_v enter_v into_o covenant_n with_o his_o servant_n much_o less_o will_v enter_v into_o covenant_n with_o a_o dumb_a element_n so_o in_o respect_n this_o sacrament_n seal_v up_o a_o covenant_n this_o covenant_n of_o necessity_n must_v be_v make_v with_o a_o faithful_a soul_n and_o in_o no_o wise_a with_o the_o
dumb_a element_n and_o therefore_o these_o word_n can_v be_v direct_v to_o the_o element_n three_o look_v to_o the_o end_n wherefore_o this_o sacrament_n be_v appoint_v be_v it_o not_o to_o lead_v we_o to_o christ_n be_v it_o not_o to_o nourish_v my_o faith_n in_o christ_n be_v it_o not_o to_o nourish_v i_o in_o a_o constant_a persuasion_n of_o the_o lord_n mercy_n in_o christ_n be_v this_o with_o a_o exhortation_n without_o the_o which_o we_o can_v profit_v let_v we_o discourse_v never_o so_o long_o upon_o the_o right_a understanding_n of_o the_o sacrament_n you_o see_v now_o how_o of_o god_n nor_o feel_v god_n in_o christ_n without_o faith_n faith_n be_v the_o only_a thing_n that_o translate_v our_o soul_n out_o of_o that_o death_n and_o damnation_n wherein_o we_o be_v conceive_v and_o bear_v and_o plant_v life_n in_o us._n so_o the_o whole_a study_n and_o endeavour_n of_o a_o christian_a shall_v tend_v to_o this_o to_o crave_v that_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o mercy_n will_v illuminate_v his_o mind_n with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n and_o that_o he_o will_v kindle_v in_o his_o heart_n a_o love_n of_o faith_n and_o work_n in_o his_o hart_n a_o thirst_n and_o desire_v of_o the_o object_n of_o faith_n &_o more_o and_o more_o to_o thirst_v and_o hunger_n for_o the_o food_n of_o faith_n that_o nourish_v we_o to_o life_n eternal_a without_o this_o faith_n how-soev_a the_o natural_a man_n understand_v natural_o will_v flatter_v himself_o sure_o there_o be_v no_o blessedness_n but_o all_o his_o life_n be_v more_o than_o terrible_a misery_n for_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v that_o flatter_v and_o please_v thou_o now_o be_v it_o a_o thought_n or_o motion_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o a_o action_n of_o the_o body_n that_o please_v thou_o now_o without_o faith_n the_o same_o very_a motion_n cogitation_n or_o action_n shall_v torment_v thou_o hereafter_o so_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o please_v god_n and_o whatsoever_o please_v not_o god_n conscience_n be_v for_o a_o light_a knowledge_n a_o doubt_v and_o uncertain_a knowledge_n make_v a_o light_n and_o small_a stroke_n as_o on_o the_o other_o part_n a_o holy_a and_o solid_a knowledge_n draw_v out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n make_v a_o heavy_a stroke_n of_o the_o conscience_n so_o the_o conscience_n must_v answer_v to_o the_o knowledge_n if_o we_o have_v no_o other_o knowledge_n but_o the_o knowledge_n which_o we_o have_v by_o nature_n and_o by_o the_o light_n &_o spark_n which_o be_v leave_v in_o nature_n our_o conscience_n will_v answer_v no_o further_o but_o to_o that_o our_o coscience_n will_v then_o go_v further_o &_o excuse_v or_o accuse_v we_o according_a unto_o the_o light_n that_o be_v in_o the_o word_n so_o that_o the_o conscience_n be_v not_o acquire_v or_o obtain_v at_o what_o time_n we_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o our_o conscience_n be_v bear_v with_o we_o be_v natural_a knowledge_n according_a whereunto_o it_o be_v call_v science_n and_o of_o feeling_n according_a whereunto_o the_o con_n be_v add_v and_o it_o be_v call_v conscience_n then_o the_o word_n conscience_n signify_v knowledge_n with_o application_n this_o conscience_n man_n to_o what_o use_v the_o lord_n have_v appoint_v the_o conscience_n to_o serve_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o of_o man_n the_o lord_n to_o do_v thou_o must_v not_o be_v give_v to_o the_o service_n of_o thy_o affection_n and_o of_o thy_o appetite_n to_o put_v they_o in_o execution_n as_o thou_o have_v former_o do_v but_o in-case_n thy_o affection_n or_o lust_n command_v thou_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n what_o be_v thy_o part_n thou_o must_v try_v how_o far_o this_o may_v stand_v with_o the_o good_a will_n of_o god_n and_o how_o far_o that_o affection_n which_o command_v thou_o may_v agree_v with_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v there_o such_o a_o harmony_n as_o that_o that_o thing_n which_o thy_o affection_n command_v thou_o may_v stand_v with_o god_n law_n and_o holy_a will_n then_o no_o question_n it_o be_v a_o sanctify_a affection_n thou_o may_v put_v it_o in_o execution_n but_o after_o this_o trial_n if_o thou_o find_v thy_o affection_n to_o be_v exorbitant_a &_o out_o of_o rule_n carry_v thou_o from_o god_n &_o against_o his_o law_n beware_v of_o it_o resist_v it_o put_v it_o not_o in_o execution_n for_o if_o thou_o fulfil_v the_o will_n of_o thy_o affection_n what_o pleasure_n can_v it_o bring_v with_o it_o it_o may_v well_o bring_v a_o flatter_a pleasure_n in_o the_o entry_n but_o it_o close_v ever_o with_o a_o bitter_a remorse_n in_o the_o end_n then_o to_o eschew_v this_o bitter_a remorse_n shall_v you_o not_o all_o try_v your_o affection_n you_o must_v examine_v and_o try_v they_o by_o our_o mouth_n eat_v the_o meat_n whereby_o the_o second_o apprehension_n may_v follow_v likewise_o our_o soul_n can_v feed_v on_o christ_n except_o we_o hold_v he_o and_o embrace_v he_o hearty_o by_o our_o will_n and_o affection_n for_o we_o come_v not_o to_o christ_n by_o any_o outward_a motion_n of_o our_o body_n but_o by_o a_o inward_a motion_n and_o apprehension_n of_o the_o hart_n for_o god_n find_v we_o all_o in_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n he_o bring_v we_o to_o christ_n by_o reform_v the_o affection_n of_o our_o soul_n by_o make_v we_o to_o love_v he_o and_o therefore_o the_o second_o
