to_o spend_v your_o time_n and_o set_v your_o affection_n upon_o lay_v obstruction_n and_o bar_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n grace_n set_v up_o idol_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o fill_v christ_n room_n before_o hand_n with_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o his_o company_n and_o all_o this_o be_v do_v willing_o and_o deliberate_o you_o have_v say_v in_o your_o heart_n as_o these_o do_v jer._n 2.25_o we_o have_v love_v stranger_n and_o after_o they_o we_o will_v go_v and_o will_v you_o or_o dare_v you_o make_v that_o a_o excuse_n why_o you_o can_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n because_o have_v be_v bear_v in_o upon_o you_o which_o you_o have_v slight_v and_o neglect_v if_o not_o quench_v and_o put_v out_o which_o be_v your_o great_a guilt_n before_o the_o lord_n be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o but_o now_o and_o then_o at_o preach_v or_o when_o in_o some_o great_a hazard_n or_o under_o sickness_n or_o some_o other_o sad_a cross_n you_o have_v be_v under_o conviction_n of_o sin_n and_o have_v have_v some_o little_a glance_n of_o the_o hazard_n you_o be_v in_o of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n more_o than_o ordinary_o you_o have_v at_o other_o time_n and_o i_o will_v ask_v you_o and_o so_o senseless_a under_o it_o he_o cast_v in_o this_o word_n to_o who_o be_v the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n reveal_v partly_o to_o confirm_v the_o former_a word_n who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n and_o partly_o to_o help_v to_o make_v the_o right_a use_n of_o it_o by_o draw_v man_n to_o the_o discovery_n of_o the_o sovereign_a hand_n of_o god_n in_o the_o matter_n and_o of_o the_o necessity_n of_o his_o grace_n for_o make_v the_o gospel_n effectual_a in_o the_o hearer_n of_o it_o wherever_o it_o come_v who_o say_v he_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n to_o who_o be_v this_o necessary_a nor_o sufficient_a a_o three_o sort_n of_o faith_n be_v temporary_a faith_n speak_v of_o matth._n 13._o and_o set_v out_o under_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n sow_v on_o stony_a work_n that_o be_v peculiar_a to_o they_o who_o the_o lord_n convert_v and_o be_v apply_v to_o none_o other_o but_o to_o those_o in_o who_o he_o work_v faith_n and_o who_o he_o effectual_o call_v by_o his_o grace_n it_o be_v a_o peculiar_a work_n then_o and_o not_o common_a for_o if_o it_o be_v common_a to_o all_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o not_o peculiar_a to_o some_o these_o two_o can_v not_o go_v together_o and_o be_v commensurable_a as_o we_o say_v who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n and_o to_o who_o be_v the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n reveal_v 4._o we_o say_v it_o be_v a_o real_a work_n as_o well_o as_o powerful_a a_o real_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v not_o only_o able_a and_o powerful_a to_o produce_v the_o effect_n and_o to_o convert_v the_o sinner_n but_o real_a and_o powerful_a in_o produce_v and_o bring_v of_o it_o about_o and_o to_o pass_v by_o a_o real_a influence_n of_o the_o spirit_n actual_o renew_v the_o will_n infuse_v and_o create_v the_o habit_n of_o grace_n &_o particular_o the_o very_a habit_n of_o faith_n among_o other_o in_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v quite_o a_o other_o thing_n then_o the_o suppose_n and_o say_v that_o a_o man_n of_o all_o even_o to_o show_v how_o christ_n jesus_n be_v the_o innocent_a son_n of_o god_n and_o without_o sin_n be_v make_v liable_a to_o the_o debt_n of_o the_o elect_v sin_n he_o become_v cautioner_n for_o they_o and_o be_v make_v liable_a on_o that_o account_n to_o satisfy_v for_o they_o it_o clear_v also_o how_o his_o suffering_n stand_v for_o they_o which_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v unreasonable_a and_o unjust_a among_o man_n that_o the_o suffering_n of_o a_o innocent_a party_n shall_v stand_v for_o the_o guilty_a it_o be_v so_o article_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n that_o the_o son_n as_o mediator_n interpose_v and_o undertake_v to_o pay_v the_o elect_v debt_n the_o lord_n jehovah_n the_o creditor_n shall_v not_o reckon_v it_o on_o their_o score_n but_o on_o the_o mediator_n and_o that_o he_o shall_v count_v for_o it_o the_o prophet_n in_o every_o verse_n almost_o be_v strike_v on_o the_o sweet_a and_o pleasant_a string_n of_o this_o noble_a plot_n and_o contrivance_n of_o god_n concern_v the_o redemption_n of_o elect_a sinner_n call_v the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n which_o these_o word_n consider_v with_o respect_n to_o their_o scope_n do_v in_o all_o the_o part_n of_o it_o clear_o hold_v out_o and_o therefore_o the_o clear_n of_o it_o be_v the_o clear_n of_o a_o main_a ground_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o reference_n to_o christ_n suffering_n and_o to_o the_o way_n how_o they_o be_v make_v forthcoming_a to_o we_o and_o withal_o to_o the_o benefit_n that_o come_v by_o they_o to_o we_o we_o can_v speak_v too_o much_o nor_o too_o often_o of_o it_o if_o we_o can_v speak_v of_o it_o suitable_o to_o the_o pass_a excellency_n of_o the_o matter_n the_o first_o doctrine_n suppose_v here_o be_v that_o there_o be_v a_o eternal_a covenant_n and_o transaction_n betwixt_o the_o lord_n jehovah_n and_o the_o mediator_n wherein_o the_o whole_a business_n concern_v the_o redemption_n and_o salvation_n of_o the_o elect_n be_v contrive_v there_o be_v a_o eternal_a covenant_n pass_v betwixt_o god_n and_o the_o mediator_n wherein_o all_o that_o be_v execute_v or_o will_v be_v concern_v the_o elect_a till_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n be_v contrive_v there_o be_v nothing_o relate_v to_o the_o elect_v salvation_n but_o it_o be_v in_o this_o transaction_n exact_o contrive_v and_o lay_v down_o even_o as_o it_o be_v in_o time_n execute_v death_n must_v have_v truâ—â—_n to_o the_o save_n of_o soul_n from_o death_n and_o to_o the_o make_n of_o they_o partaker_n of_o life_n 3._o look_v on_o the_o word_n as_o a_o promise_v make_v to_o soul_n the_o sad_a and_o sore_o pinch_a strait_n and_o pressure_n that_o he_o be_v put_v to_o and_o bring_v under_o not_o only_o in_o his_o body_n but_o also_o in_o his_o soul_n 2._o the_o promise_v make_v to_o he_o upon_o his_o undertake_n and_o pay_v of_o the_o price_n he_o shall_v see_v of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n that_o be_v the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o his_o soul_n travel_n it_o shall_v not_o be_v for_o nought_o but_o shall_v certain_o have_v fruit_n he_o shall_v have_v a_o numerous_a seed_n and_o issue_n 3._o there_o be_v here_o hold_v forth_o the_o mediator_n acquiescence_n in_o the_o bargain_n so_o propose_v that_o he_o undertake_v the_o condition_n of_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n on_o these_o same_o term_n that_o he_o shall_v see_v a_o seed_n he_o require_v no_o other_o satisfaction_n and_o therefore_o he_o accept_v of_o it_o and_o acquiesce_n in_o it_o as_o the_o result_n of_o this_o design_n and_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v have_v speak_v of_o the_o former_a two_o we_o come_v now_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o three_o and_o we_o may_v consider_v it_o in_o these_o three_o respect_n 1._o as_o it_o look_v to_o christ_n design_n who_o be_v like_a to_o one_o that_o be_v run_v a_o race_n and_o have_v the_o prize_n before_o he_o and_o in_o his_o eye_n and_o this_o be_v employ_v here_o that_o he_o have_v something_o before_o he_o in_o lay_v down_o of_o his_o life_n which_o he_o shall_v not_o miss_v but_o shall_v reach_v and_o be_v satisfy_v in_o it_o so_o many_o be_v give_v he_o for_o who_o he_o enter_v cautioner_n on_o condition_n that_o his_o righteousness_n shall_v be_v make_v furthcoming_a to_o they_o and_o that_o none_o of_o they_o shall_v be_v without_o or_o want_v it_o 2._o as_o it_o look_v both_o to_o the_o number_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o effect_n and_o fruit_n in_o respect_n of_o they_o that_o be_v give_v to_o he_o he_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v he_o shall_v have_v though_o not_o all_o man_n and_o woman_n yet_o a_o sufficient_a number_n even_o as_o many_o as_o shall_v satisfy_v and_o content_v he_o and_o whatever_o be_v intend_v by_o he_o in_o the_o lay_n down_o of_o his_o life_n he_o shall_v want_v nothing_o of_o it_o but_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v in_o it_o and_o thus_o the_o word_n be_v to_o be_v active_o understand_v to_o wit_n of_o god_n actual_a perform_v of_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v to_o the_o mediator_n 3._o it_o may_v be_v look_v on_o as_o the_o effect_n and_o consequent_a follow_v upon_o the_o former_a promise_n and_o so_o it_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v passive_o for_o the_o delight_n that_o he_o take_v in_o the_o fruit_n of_o his_o suffering_n and_o in_o the_o see_v of_o sinner_n get_v the_o good_a of_o they_o and_o the_o so_o meaning_n be_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v full_o content_v and_o thorough_o well_o satisfy_v with_o yea_o even_o delight_v and_o to_o speak_v so_o comfort_v in_o this_o for_o all_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n when_o many_o shall_v be_v bring_v to_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o to_o get_v good_a of_o he_o to_o clear_v it_o further_a we_o may_v take_v the_o word_n as_o allude_v to_o several_a similitude_n as_o 1._o to_o that_o of_o hungry_a and_o thirsty_a person_n who_o be_v say_v to_o be_v satisfy_v when_o their_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n be_v remove_v by_o meat_n and_o drink_n which_o imply_v that_o jesus_n christ_n in_o his_o pursue_v and_o perform_v the_o work_n of_o redemption_n have_v a_o holy_a hunger_n and_o thirst_n and_o this_o his_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n be_v satisfy_v in_o their_o salvation_n and_o what_o lead_v to_o it_o as_o himself_o say_v john_n 4.32_o where_o he_o make_v use_v of_o this_o same_o similitude_n i_o have_v meat_n to_o eat_v that_o you_o know_v not_o of_o 2._o it_o may_v allude_v to_o a_o man_n take_v pain_n in_o plant_v of_o a_o vine-yard_n or_o orchard_n to_o who_o it_o be_v a_o satisfaction_n when_o all_o the_o tree_n grow_v thrive_v well_o and_o bear_v fruit_n and_o so_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n shall_v be_v at_o vast_a expense_n and_o great_a labour_n and_o pain_n in_o make_v sinner_n to_o become_v tree_n of_o righteousness_n but_o that_o all_o these_o for_o who_o he_o suffer_v and_o be_v at_o all_o this_o expense_n and_o pain_n shall_v hold_v so_o well_o and_o be_v so_o fruitful_a at_o length_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v full_o satisfy_v in_o they_o and_o think_v all_o well_o bestow_v or_o 3._o we_o may_v take_v it_o in_o allusion_n to_o a_o woman_n in_o travel_n who_o be_v say_v john_n 16.21_o to_o have_v sorrow_n while_o her_o pain_n be_v upon_o she_o but_o so_o soon_o as_o she_o be_v deliver_v she_o no_o more_o remember_v her_o sorrow_n for_o joy_n that_o a_o man_n child_n be_v bear_v and_o this_o similitude_n be_v here_o have_v by_o they_o this_o be_v it_o that_o you_o be_v câ—lled_v to_o and_o which_o delight_v he_o and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o though_o you_o will_v give_v he_o thousand_o of_o ram_n and_o ten_o thousand_o of_o river_n of_o oil_n yea_o the_o first_o bear_v of_o your_o body_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o your_o soul_n it_o will_v not_o satisfy_v he_o nor_o be_v accept_v because_o this_o alone_o be_v the_o satisfaction_n that_o he_o will_v have_v for_o his_o soul-travel_n i_o shall_v a_o little_a explain_v this_o and_o then_o prosecute_v the_o use_n of_o it_o you_o will_v ask_v then_o what_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o christ_n soul-travel_n that_o satisfy_v he_o i_o answer_v that_o we_o take_v in_o under_o it_o not_o only_o 1._o that_o you_o shall_v aim_v to_o be_v at_o heaven_n neiâ—her_o 2._o â—his_n that_o you_o be_v serious_a in_o the_o duty_n of_o holiness_n as_o if_o these_o be_v well-pleasing_a to_o god_n without_o respect_n to_o christ_n suffering_n but_o it_o be_v the_o usemaking_a he_o caâ—noâ—_n câ—me_n to_o god_n of_o himself_o can_v make_v his_o peace_n nor_o can_v he_o walk_v in_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n so_o as_o to_o please_v god_n and_o so_o fly_v to_o christ_n for_o refuge_n and_o make_v use_n of_o his_o purchase_n there_o lie_v christ_n delight_n to_o see_v such_o a_o sinner_n come_v and_o hide_v himself_o under_o the_o shadow_n of_o his_o suffering_n and_o in_o this_o respect_n the_o more_o hardly_o a_o sinner_n be_v put_v at_o it_o be_v the_o more_o satisfaction_n to_o he_o that_o he_o in_o his_o death_n and_o suffering_n be_v make_v use_n of_o because_o this_o way_n the_o sinner_n life_n be_v more_o entire_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o suffering_n and_o that_o such_o a_o person_n have_v any_o strength_n comfort_n or_o peace_n and_o be_v admit_v to_o heaven_n it_o be_v allenarly_a through_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n which_o be_v his_o great_a satisfaction_n and_o therefore_o we_o will_v two_o commend_v to_o you_o that_o as_o you_o will_v do_v christ_n a_o favour_n to_o speak_v so_o with_o reverence_n and_o o_o what_o a_o motive_n be_v this_o for_o vile_a sinner_n the_o dust_n of_o his_o foot_n to_o be_v put_v in_o a_o capacity_n to_o do_v he_o a_o pleasure_n endeavour_v this_o especial_o that_o as_o to_o you_o christ_n may_v see_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o be_v satisfy_v and_o that_o all_o his_o word_n we_o have_v here_o lay_v before_o we_o and_o think_v upon_o it_o the_o most_o wonderful_a inconceivable_a and_o inexpressible_a suit_n and_o request_n of_o he_o who_o be_v the_o creator_n to_o we_o poor_a sinful_a creature_n and_o what_o be_v it_o i_o have_v be_v say_v he_o on_o the_o matter_n in_o sore_a travel_n and_o pain_n for_o you_o now_o i_o pray_v you_o let_v it_o not_o be_v for_o nought_o let_v i_o see_v the_o fruit_n of_o it_o and_o to_o speak_v it_o with_o reverence_n of_o
his_o suffering_n if_o this_o covenant_n have_v not_o be_v which_o give_v they_o warrant_n to_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o same_o ere_o faith_n can_v act_n on_o christ_n suffering_n it_o must_v have_v this_o ground_n lay_v down_o that_o it_o have_v a_o warrant_n by_o virtue_n of_o this_o covenant_n to_o lay_v hold_n on_o they_o 3._o the_o knowledge_n and_o offer_n of_o this_o mysterious_a contrivance_n of_o grace_n be_v also_o necessary_a and_o do_v concur_v to_o bring_v about_o the_o freedom_n this_o must_v be_v manifest_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o saviour_n such_o a_o or_o a_o moment_n sinful_a mirth_n o_o pitiful_o poor_a bargain_n what_o will_v become_v of_o that_o mirth_n or_o lust_n or_o pleasure_n of_o this_o house_n or_o of_o that_o land_n when_o king_n and_o great_a man_n will_v lie_v crawl_v like_v so_o many_o worm_n before_o the_o lamb_n you_o will_v not_o get_v your_o house_n or_o land_n with_o you_o you_o will_v not_o get_v leave_n to_o wear_v your_o brave_a clothes_n you_o will_v have_v no_o silver_n nor_o gold_n in_o your_o purse_n in_o that_o day_n and_o suppose_v you_o have_v it_o the_o redemption_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v precious_a and_o cease_v for_o ever_o by_o any_o such_o price_n it_o be_v a_o wonderful_a thing_n that_o when_o christ_n esteem_v so_o much_o of_o soul_n that_o sinner_n shall_v esteem_v so_o little_a of_o they_o be_v it_o not_o just_a that_o such_o soul_n shall_v go_v to_o hell_n when_o they_o esteem_v they_o so_o little_a worth_n use_v 2._o it_o shall_v teach_v you_o to_o love_n and_o hearty_o to_o welcome_v this_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n what_o argument_n of_o love_n and_o of_o trust_n what_o motive_n to_o welcome_v he_o can_v there_o be_v if_o this_o be_v not_o that_o he_o spare_v not_o his_o life_n but_o pour_v it_o out_o unto_o death_n for_o sinner_n how_o long_o shall_v we_o halt_v betwixt_o christ_n and_o belial_n we_o thou_fw-mi not_o endure_v to_o mortify_v a_o lust_n to_o want_v our_o sport_n and_o laughter_n or_o a_o bit_n of_o our_o credit_n or_o honour_n though_o it_o shall_v cost_v we_o the_o want_n of_o christ_n but_o o_o ingrate_a fool_n be_v that_o a_o become_a requital_n three_o word_n to_o you_o 1._o love_v he_o for_o even_o publican_n will_v love_v these_o that_o love_v they_o and_o give_v christ_n love_n for_o love_n 2._o credit_n and_o trust_v he_o do_v not_o look_v for_o ill_a at_o his_o hand_n what_o ground_n be_v there_o to_o suspect_v he_o it_o be_v his_o glory_n to_o do_v good_a to_o sinner_n and_o he_o count_v they_o his_o triumph_n and_o spoil_v and_o to_o make_v conquest_n of_o they_o he_o pour_v out_o his_o soul_n unto_o death_n or_o as_o the_o word_n be_v phil._n 2._o he_o empty_v himself_o which_o seem_v to_o look_v to_o this_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o be_v not_o that_o warrant_n sufficient_a for_o you_o to_o trust_v and_o credit_v he_o and_o to_o lay_v the_o weight_n of_o what_o concern_v you_o upon_o he_o and_o 3._o welcome_a he_o which_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o love_n he_o be_v a_o sweet_a wooer_n he_o be_v that_o good_a shepherd_n that_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o his_o sheep_n he_o give_v
