and_o especial_o make_v we_o sensible_a of_o the_o thing_n that_o have_v cause_v it_o namely_o our_o ingratitude_n for_o god_n former_a mercy_n our_o lewdness_n and_o debauchery_n the_o spirit_n of_o atheism_n and_o profaneness_n and_o irreligion_n that_o still_o reign_v among_o we_o as_o much_o as_o ever_o and_o above_o all_o our_o unaccountable_a divide_v ourselves_o into_o party_n and_o pursue_v particular_a pique_n and_o quarrel_n not_o only_o to_o the_o neglect_n but_o to_o the_o plain_a ruin_n of_o our_o common_a interest_n these_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o have_v hinder_v our_o success_n and_o provoke_v god_n displeasure_n against_o we_o and_o till_o these_o thing_n be_v amend_v i_o be_o afraid_a we_o shall_v never_o be_v a_o happy_a nation_n but_o yet_o notwithstanding_o our_o high_a provocation_n yet_o so_o gentle_o have_v god_n correct_v we_o and_o even_o in_o his_o judgement_n so_o much_o have_v he_o remember_v mercy_n that_o we_o have_v all_o reason_n to_o rejoice_v at_o the_o benignity_n and_o kindness_n of_o his_o dispensation_n towards_o we_o nay_o and_o to_o render_v he_o our_o most_o hearty_a and_o solemn_a thanks_o for_o the_o mercy_n that_o he_o have_v bestow_v upon_o we_o even_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o matter_n we_o complain_v of_o for_o god_n have_v real_o so_o far_o hear_v our_o prayer_n this_o year_n that_o he_o have_v give_v we_o the_o most_o important_a success_n though_o not_o the_o success_n we_o desire_v he_o have_v keep_v the_o war_n at_o a_o distance_n from_o we_o and_o we_o have_v under_o the_o happy_a government_n of_o her_o majesty_n live_v free_a from_o all_o disturbance_n at_o home_n every_o man_n sit_v under_o his_o own_o vine_n and_o his_o own_o figtree_n as_o the_o prophet_n speak_v enjoy_v his_o religion_n and_o right_n in_o perfect_a peace_n and_o with_o a_o bountiful_a provision_n likewise_o from_o god_n hand_n of_o all_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v either_o needful_a or_o convenient_a and_o as_o for_o our_o success_n abroad_o though_o it_o be_v not_o proper_a for_o i_o to_o talk_v of_o those_o matter_n yet_o i_o believe_v thus_o much_o i_o may_v decent_o and_o true_o say_v that_o though_o the_o king_n have_v not_o the_o victory_n be_v overpower_a by_o number_n yet_o he_o gain_v more_o honour_n and_o sustain_v less_o loss_n than_o those_o that_o boast_v of_o the_o victory_n and_o which_o be_v yet_o more_o god_n have_v not_o only_o preserve_v his_o person_n amid_o the_o infinite_a hazard_n he_o be_v continual_o expose_v to_o and_o return_v he_o safe_a to_o we_o but_o return_v he_o likewise_o with_o such_o reputation_n for_o his_o courage_n and_o vigilance_n and_o conduct_v in_o the_o difficulty_n he_o have_v to_o struggle_v with_o as_o have_v gain_v he_o the_o high_a esteem_n among_o his_o enemy_n and_o therefore_o ought_v much_o more_o to_o endear_v he_o to_o his_o own_o subject_n and_o now_o let_v all_o this_o be_v consider_v and_o then_o let_v any_o man_n say_v that_o real_o love_v the_o interest_n of_o his_o country_n whether_o we_o have_v not_o reason_n to_o look_v upon_o these_o thing_n as_o great_a blessing_n and_o as_o such_o to_o return_v our_o solemn_a thanks_o to_o god_n for_o they_o and_o then_o in_o the_o second_o place_n as_o to_o our_o future_a success_n let_v we_o all_o cheerful_o depend_v upon_o god_n providence_n and_o trust_v in_o his_o many_o experience_n of_o it_o even_o beyond_o our_o hope_n and_o expectation_n and_o one_o likewise_o upon_o who_o power_n we_o may_v secure_o depend_v since_o his_o arm_n be_v not_o shorten_v nor_o wish_v to_o be_v in_o any_o other_o let_v but_o we_o do_v our_o part_n by_o qualify_a ourselves_o for_o god_n mercy_n and_o that_o be_v to_o be_v do_v by_o contribute_v our_o best_a endeavour_n every_o man_n in_o his_o place_n and_o station_n to_o the_o service_n of_o the_o public_a and_o then_o we_o may_v safe_o cast_v all_o our_o care_n upon_o he_o who_o care_v for_o we_o and_o we_o may_v be_v sure_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v disappoint_v this_o method_n as_o it_o be_v much_o more_o easy_a so_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o much_o more_o conduce_v towards_o the_o obtain_n the_o success_n we_o desire_v than_o complain_v and_o fretfulness_n and_o a_o torment_a anxiety_n about_o our_o affair_n we_o may_v indeed_o by_o our_o peevish_a and_o querulous_a humour_n disquiet_v ourselves_o and_o put_v other_o into_o a_o ferment_n nay_o and_o at_o last_o perhaps_o may_v contribute_v a_o great_a deal_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o hinder_v and_o defeat_v the_o most_o wise_a counsel_n that_o be_v propose_v for_o our_o safety_n but_o that_o be_v the_o great_a point_n we_o gain_v god_n almighty_a will_v not_o alter_v his_o method_n for_o any_o of_o our_o foolish_a passion_n but_o there_o be_v gladness_n for_o the_o upright_o in_o heart_n 97.11_o psal_n 97.11_o whatever_o affliction_n come_v upon_o the_o upright_a man_n yet_o he_o have_v this_o advantage_n of_o other_o man_n that_o he_o bear_v they_o infinite_o more_o light_o than_o they_o do_v they_o be_v real_o no_o great_a disturbance_n to_o he_o for_o he_o enjoy_v the_o same_o calmness_n and_o serenity_n of_o mind_n the_o same_o peace_n and_o quiet_a and_o contentment_n that_o ever_o he_o do_v his_o present_a suffering_n be_v rather_o matter_n of_o rejoice_v and_o triumph_n to_o he_o than_o of_o discontent_n and_o repine_a for_o he_o know_v that_o they_o come_v upon_o he_o by_o the_o counsel_n and_o disposal_n of_o the_o great_a governor_n of_o the_o world_n and_o he_o know_v that_o he_o have_v so_o sincere_o approve_v himself_o to_o god_n and_o be_v so_o well_o belove_v by_o he_o that_o he_o shall_v not_o have_v be_v order_v into_o these_o circumstance_n have_v it_o not_o be_v real_o for_o his_o good_a and_o this_o consideration_n do_v so_o effectual_o support_v he_o under_o all_o the_o difficulty_n that_o he_o have_v to_o conflict_n with_o that_o he_o not_o only_o sit_v down_o easy_o and_o quiet_o but_o be_v very_o well_o please_v with_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o divine_a providence_n towards_o he_o how_o ingrateful_a soever_o they_o may_v be_v to_o flesh_n and_o blood_n let_v what_o will_v happen_v not_o be_v presume_v to_o have_v so_o great_a a_o force_n as_o a_o argument_n draw_v from_o their_o own_o sense_n and_o experience_n to_o this_o reply_n of_o the_o rich_a man_n abraham_n peremptory_o rejoin_v in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o text._n if_o they_o hear_v not_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n neither_o will_v they_o be_v persuade_v though_o one_o rise_v from_o the_o dead_a to_o omit_v lesser_a matter_n that_o may_v be_v observe_v from_o these_o word_n the_o point_n which_o primary_o and_o most_o natural_o seem_v to_o be_v offer_v to_o our_o consideration_n from_o they_o be_v this_o that_o those_o who_o give_v no_o credit_n to_o a_o set_v stand_v revelation_n of_o god_n once_o well_o attest_v or_o be_v not_o thereby_o prevail_v upon_o to_o reform_v their_o evil_a manner_n neither_o in_o all_o probability_n will_v they_o be_v prevail_v upon_o though_o a_o particular_a miracle_n be_v wrought_v by_o god_n in_o order_n to_o their_o conversion_n as_o for_o instance_n though_o one_o shall_v rise_v from_o the_o dead_a and_o appear_v to_o they_o now_o to_o satisfy_v every_o one_o of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o proposition_n it_o will_v be_v abundant_o sufficient_a to_o make_v out_o these_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o there_o be_v real_o more_o force_n and_o weight_n in_o a_o public_a stand_a revelation_n of_o god_n such_o as_o that_o be_v by_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n here_o mention_v to_o convince_v man_n or_o to_o reclaim_v they_o than_o there_o can_v be_v in_o a_o private_a miracle_n though_o i_o see_v it_o with_o my_o eye_n and_o second_o though_o god_n shall_v be_v please_v to_o work_v a_o miracle_n or_o to_o send_v a_o apparition_n for_o the_o conviction_n of_o a_o obstinate_a unbeliever_n or_o vicious_a person_n yet_o such_o a_o one_o will_v as_o easy_o find_v out_o shift_n and_o way_n to_o evade_v the_o force_n of_o such_o a_o argument_n and_o to_o hinder_v the_o effect_n it_o ought_v have_v upon_o he_o as_o he_o former_o do_v to_o put_v off_o the_o ordinary_a stand_a motive_n and_o argument_n of_o religion_n and_o consequent_o there_o be_v little_a probability_n that_o he_o who_o be_v not_o gain_v by_o the_o former_a will_v be_v wrought_v upon_o by_o the_o latter_a i_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o of_o these_o thing_n that_o there_o be_v real_o more_o force_n and_o weight_n in_o a_o public_a stand_a revelation_n of_o god_n to_o convince_v man_n or_o to_o reclaim_v they_o than_o there_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o be_v in_o a_o private_a single_a miracle_n though_o a_o man_n see_v it_o with_o his_o eye_n or_o than_o there_o can_v be_v in_o a_o apparition_n from_o the_o dead_a if_o god_n shall_v think_v fit_a to_o vouchsafe_v such_o a_o thing_n in_o speak_v to_o this_o i_o mean_v not_o to_o concern_v myself_o or_o you_o with_o the_o revelation_n of_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n though_o that_o be_v the_o revelation_n which_o the_o text_n here_o speak_v of_o i_o think_v it_o will_v be_v more_o suitable_a and_o useful_a to_o we_o to_o consider_v
god_n shall_v let_v loose_a our_o enemy_n upon_o we_o the_o enemy_n of_o our_o nation_n and_o of_o our_o religion_n and_o shall_v give_v we_o over_o as_o a_o prey_n unto_o they_o what_o have_v we_o to_o reply_v true_o nothing_o that_o i_o know_v of_o except_o that_o of_o the_o psalmist_n righteous_a art_n thou_o o_o lord_n and_o just_o be_v thy_o judgement_n but_o we_o trust_v god_n lenity_n and_o forbearance_n and_o mercy_n be_v as_o great_a to_o public_a society_n and_o kingdom_n as_o it_o be_v to_o private_a person_n and_o that_o we_o may_v apply_v those_o expression_n to_o our_o but_o now_o the_o christian_a method_n of_o prove_v another_o life_n be_v quite_o of_o another_o strain_n and_o whole_o free_a from_o these_o inconvenience_n that_o demonstration_n which_o christ_n have_v give_v we_o of_o a_o glorious_a immortality_n by_o his_o resurrection_n from_o the_o dead_a as_o it_o be_v infinite_o certain_a and_o conclusive_a so_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o easy_a short_a and_o compendious_a powerful_a and_o operative_a no_o man_n that_o believe_v the_o matter_n of_o fact_n can_v deny_v the_o cogency_n of_o it_o man_n of_o the_o mean_a capacity_n may_v apprehend_v it_o person_n in_o a_o crowd_n of_o business_n and_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o temptation_n may_v attend_v to_o it_o and_o it_o have_v this_o virtue_n beside_o that_o it_o leave_v a_o last_a impression_n upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o those_o that_o do_v believe_v and_o consider_v it_o thanks_o therefore_o to_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n for_o this_o excellent_a instrument_n of_o piety_n that_o he_o life_n as_o by_o his_o resurrection_n he_o clear_v up_o to_o we_o the_o certainty_n of_o our_o future_a state_n and_o thereby_o give_v we_o the_o great_a motive_n and_o encouragement_n to_o lead_v new_a life_n so_o in_o the_o last_o place_n by_o the_o same_o resurrection_n he_o acquire_v a_o power_n of_o confer_v grace_n and_o strength_n and_o influence_n upon_o we_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o which_o we_o be_v in_o fact_n enable_v to_o lead_v new_a life_n though_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n reconcile_v we_o to_o god_n and_o procure_v a_o pardon_n of_o sin_n for_o we_o yet_o the_o actual_a benefit_n of_o this_o reconciliation_n the_o actual_a application_n of_o this_o pardon_n do_v depend_v upon_o our_o performance_n of_o certain_a condition_n which_o condition_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v mortify_v all_o our_o evil_a affection_n and_o frame_v our_o life_n suitable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o now_o the_o grace_n and_o power_n by_o which_o we_o be_v enable_v to_o do_v this_o be_v not_o the_o effect_n of_o christ_n death_n but_o of_o his_o resurrection_n it_o be_v when_o he_o ascend_v up_o on_o high_a and_o lead_v captivity_n captive_a that_o be_v when_o he_o
