come_v together_o to_o worship_v the_o lord_n for_o there_o be_v no_o other_o place_n in_o all_o the_o world_n where_o the_o people_n may_v come_v together_o to_o celebrate_v the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o jerusalem_n alone_o so_o that_o this_o verse_n be_v as_o a_o exposition_n of_o that_o place_n in_o exod._n where_o i_o shall_v leave_v a_o memorial_n of_o my_o name_n there_o will_v i_o priest_n not_o â—â—â—ly_o in_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o law_n but_o special_o in_o the_o chief_a sacrifice_n of_o all_o that_o be_v of_o the_o celebrate_n &_o praise_v the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o which_o be_v set_v forth_o spiritual_a consolation_n of_o victory_n against_o sin_n and_o death_n and_o also_o temporal_a concern_v the_o kingdom_n and_o political_a order_n these_o benefit_n he_o set_v forth_o when_o he_o speak_v of_o ascend_v up_o and_o make_v a_o comparison_n between_o jerusalem_n and_o other_o city_n as_o if_o he_o say_v other_o city_n may_v flourish_v with_o make_v no_o mention_n at_o all_o albeit_o they_o be_v command_v to_o be_v do_v no_o where_o else_o but_o in_o the_o temple_n only_o he_o speak_v of_o preach_v the_o word_n and_o thank_n give_v or_o prayer_n and_o albeit_o he_o reprove_v not_o these_o sacrifice_n yet_o he_o plain_o declare_v that_o the_o sum_n of_o true_a religion_n be_v to_o hear_v the_o lord_n when_o he_o speak_v unto_o we_o and_o to_o invocate_v and_o praise_v his_o holy_a name_n this_o be_v it_o for_o the_o which_o david_n so_o high_o praise_v his_o temple_n which_o we_o also_o ought_v special_o to_o behold_v in_o our_o they_o know_v which_o be_v not_o see_v nor_o feel_v but_o believe_v they_o be_v also_o witness_n which_o he_o be_v the_o word_n for_o when_o they_o hear_v it_o they_o testify_v or_o bear_v witness_n against_o the_o
this_o peace_n this_o be_v in_o deed_n a_o notable_a promise_n but_o do_v not_o we_o most_o wicked_o contemn_v this_o promise_n many_o of_o purpose_n seek_v occasion_n to_o trouble_v the_o church_n in_o the_o common_a wealth_n likewise_o we_o see_v what_o great_a contempt_n of_o â—awes_n there_o be_v every_o where_o by_o these_o enormity_n we_o do_v as_o it_o be_v constrain_v god_n not_o to_o bestow_v upon_o we_o this_o blessing_n and_o life_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o we_o be_v vex_v with_o sundry_a calamity_n for_o that_o we_o do_v contemn_v this_o blessing_n so_o gracious_o offer_v unto_o we_o notwithstanding_o the_o world_n through_o calamity_n and_o scourge_n will_v not_o amend_v for_o what_o do_v it_o profit_v the_o jew_n to_o be_v so_o often_o exercise_v with_o all_o whereas_o a_o other_o neglect_v this_o quietness_n and_o by_o strife_n and_o contention_n seek_v ten_o crown_n lose_v many_o time_n a_o hundred_o crown_n or_o more_o if_o these_o thing_n so_o fall_v out_o in_o private_a matter_n what_o happen_v think_v you_o in_o the_o affair_n of_o common_a wealth_n &_o kingdom_n let_v we_o learn_v therefore_o high_o to_o esteem_n of_o peace_n &_o to_o be_v thankful_a unto_o god_n for_o such_o a_o singular_a gift_n both_o in_o the_o common_a wealth_n and_o in_o the_o church_n so_o shall_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o we_o shall_v feel_v and_o enjoy_v though_o the_o prophet_n have_v study_v to_o comprise_v in_o these_o short_a psalm_n the_o fumme_n and_o effect_n of_o all_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v to_o be_v teach_v unto_o the_o people_n now_o therefore_o he_o conclude_v in_o this_o psalm_n the_o whole_a matter_n which_o he_o take_v in_o hand_n to_o entreat_v of_o as_o we_o also_o do_v when_o in_o the_o end_n of_o our_o preach_n we_o pray_v that_o god_n will_v preserve_v his_o word_n among_o we_o and_o that_o we_o may_v continue_v in_o the_o same_o unto_o the_o end_n for_o when_o the_o word_n be_v pure_o teach_v all_o thing_n be_v safe_a holy_a &_o pure_a although_o the_o gate_n of_o hell_n rage_n against_o we_o never_o so_o much_o and_o we_o lose_v not_o only_o our_o good_n but_o also_o our_o life_n for_o what_o harm_n have_v we_o thereby_o so_o that_o our_o soul_n may_v be_v save_v it_o be_v the_o word_n therefore_o alone_o that_o preserve_v all_o good_a thing_n but_o if_o that_o be_v lose_v or_o corrupt_v than_o all_o good_a thing_n be_v lose_v for_o like_v as_o if_o the_o sun_n and_o light_n of_o the_o world_n shall_v be_v take_v away_o he_o that_o walk_v walk_v in_o darkness_n so_o if_o the_o word_n be_v darken_v and_o corrupt_v in_o what_o misery_n and_o danger_n be_v the_o common_a wealth_n for_o than_o neither_o magistrate_n nor_o subject_n nor_o servant_n know_v what_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v but_o all_o thing_n be_v wrap_v up_o in_o error_n and_o horrible_a darkness_n wherefore_o this_o psalm_n exhort_v we_o to_o pray_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v preserve_v and_o continue_v his_o word_n amongst_o we_o and_o so_o pernicious_a as_o the_o opinion_n of_o many_o at_o this_o day_n who_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o have_v get_v never_o so_o little_a knowledge_n of_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n think_v themselves_o by_o and_o by_o to_o be_v great_a doctor_n for_o see_v that_o these_o thing_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o fine_a and_o eloquent_a talk_n in_o reason_v and_o dispute_v but_o in_o practice_n and_o experience_n direct_v not_o by_o man_n reason_n but_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n they_o be_v miserable_o deceive_v that_o rest_n in_o bare_a and_o naked_a knowledge_n which_o be_v but_o exercise_v and_o occupy_v but_o who_o be_v there_o ever_o among_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n which_o can_v say_v that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o attain_v to_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n set_v water_n which_o sudden_o consume_v and_o destroy_v all_o thing_n the_o heart_n therefore_o be_v on_o each_o side_n trouble_v and_o vex_v both_o with_o fear_n of_o the_o calamity_n that_o shall_v follow_v and_o also_o with_o the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o present_a evil_n now_o if_o there_o be_v join_v with_o all_o these_o thing_n a_o inward_a cross_n and_o affliction_n soul_n so_o that_o the_o heart_n do_v also_o feel_v the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n here_o it_o seem_v impossible_a for_o a_o man_n to_o pray_v and_o doubtless_o a_o man_n unexpert_a and_o unskilful_a in_o these_o matter_n and_o presume_v of_o the_o word_n and_o his_o own_o knowledge_n shall_v gain_v nothing_o thereby_o but_o infinite_a trouble_n and_o vexation_n for_o to_o teach_v to_o reprove_v and_o to_o convince_v be_v not_o sufficient_a but_o god_n withal_o must_v give_v the_o increase_n that_o not_o only_o we_o with_o our_o brethren_n may_v be_v preserve_v in_o sound_a doctrine_n but_o also_o such_o as_o teach_v the_o contrary_n may_v be_v root_v out_o and_o bring_v to_o naught_o and_o this_o by_o prayer_n only_o be_v obtain_v but_o how_o hard_o a_o thing_n this_o be_v we_o have_v already_o declare_v to_o read_v the_o word_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o to_o teach_v the_o word_n be_v in_o deed_n excellent_a and_o heavenly_a work_n which_o require_v the_o help_n and_o aid_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n faith_n but_o the_o inward_a practice_n of_o faith_n so_o to_o convert_v unto_o the_o lord_n so_o to_o pray_v so_o to_o presume_v of_o god_n favour_n that_o thy_o prayer_n shall_v please_v he_o and_o that_o he_o will_v hear_v the_o same_o that_o be_v a_o hard_a matter_n in_o deed_n for_o fearful_a conscience_n many_o time_n feel_v not_o this_o certainty_n and_o assurance_n in_o themselves_o but_o be_v bring_v to_o such_o doubt_v and_o mistrust_n that_o they_o can_v conceive_v no_o hope_n of_o help_n or_o comfort_n especial_o such_o as_o be_v touch_v with_o first_o to_o doubt_v whether_o prayer_n will_v any_o thing_n avail_n or_o not_o they_o that_o be_v bring_v to_o this_o point_n can_v not_o pray_v especial_o if_o they_o measure_v the_o same_o after_o the_o sense_n &_o feeling_n of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n but_o here_o thou_o must_v not_o regard_v what_o thou_o be_v but_o rather_o look_v to_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n the_o necessity_n of_o prayer_n the_o danger_n that_o follow_v the_o neglect_v thereof_o and_o the_o thing_n itself_o for_o the_o which_o thou_o ought_v to_o pray_v set_v these_o thing_n before_o thine_o eye_n albeit_o thine_o own_o conscience_n and_o unworthiness_n call_v thou_o from_o prayer_n yet_o shall_v thou_o be_v constrain_v by_o prayer_n to_o fly_v to_o god_n for_o help_n and_o succour_v for_o if_o a_o be_v our_o mind_n quicken_v and_o the_o tentation_n or_o conscience_n of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n be_v prayer_n as_o it_o be_v swallow_v up_o like_a as_o it_o happen_v also_o in_o sudden_a danger_n as_o when_o a_o man_n in_o his_o journey_n fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o thief_n or_o be_v in_o great_a peril_n of_o drown_v here_o before_o he_o can_v once_o think_v of_o his_o own_o unworthiness_n he_o burst_v out_o into_o these_o word_n or_o this_o cogitation_n oh_o god_n be_v merciful_a unto_o i_o and_o here_o the_o say_n of_o the_o physician_n be_v find_v most_o true_a that_o sharp_a sauce_n provoke_v the_o appetite_n for_o there_o be_v no_o better_a schoolmaster_n to_o teach_v we_o to_o pray_v than_o necessity_n but_o while_o we_o walk_v in_o security_n and_o be_v not_o touch_v with_o any_o feel_n of_o present_a danger_n no_o marvel_n be_v it_o if_o our_o prayer_n be_v either_o no_o prayer_n at_o all_o or_o else_o in_o deed_n very_o faint_a and_o cold_a for_o i_o own_o part_n i_o can_v say_v by_o experience_n experience_n that_o i_o never_o pray_v more_o hearty_o then_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n and_o this_o be_v that_o sharp_a sauce_n which_o stir_v up_o also_o in_o david_n a_o hunger_n as_o it_o be_v and_o a_o appetite_n to_o pray_v as_o he_o say_v i_o call_v unto_o the_o lord_n in_o my_o trouble_n etc_n etc_n we_o may_v learn_v therefore_o out_o of_o this_o verse_n that_o david_n use_v this_o remedy_n against_o lie_a tongue_n that_o first_o by_o doctrine_n he_o stir_v up_o himself_o and_o other_o prayer_n and_o then_o he_o pray_v in_o like_a manner_n ought_v we_o to_o do_v even_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o cause_n or_o necessity_n which_o the_o lord_n prayer_n also_o set_v forth_o unto_o we_o for_o in_o that_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v pollute_v man_n conscience_n pervert_v and_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n hinder_v we_o have_v in_o deed_n great_a cause_n to_o say_v hallow_a be_v thy_o name_n that_o these_o abomination_n and_o blasphemy_n may_v have_v a_o end_n thy_o kingdom_n come_v which_o by_o the_o kingdom_n of_o satan_n be_v in_o a_o manner_n oppress_v he_o that_o pray_v after_o this_o sort_n shall_v fill_v heaven_n with_o his_o sigh_n and_o groan_n whereas_o if_o we_o live_v at_o ease_n and_o feel_v no_o trouble_n our_o prayer_n be_v so_o cold_a that_o scarce_o our_o constrain_v we_o to_o pour_v out_o true_a and_o hearty_a prayer_n unto_o god_n with_o sigh_n and_o groan_n let_v we_o consider_v well_o these_o thing_n and_o with_o our_o prayer_n let_v we_o burst_v through_o the_o cloud_n which_o hide_v from_o we_o the_o presence_n of_o our_o most_o gracious_a god_n god._n and_o think_v that_o prayer_n be_v a_o acceptable_a sacrifice_n to_o god_n and_o such_o a_o service_n as_o he_o himself_o require_v of_o we_o some_o seek_v a_o mean_a help_n and_o trust_v to_o other_o man_n prayer_n which_o in_o deed_n be_v not_o to_o be_v neglect_v for_o the_o prayer_n of_o many_o have_v a_o more_o force_n and_o power_n but_o thou_o also_o must_v pray_v as_o a_o member_n of_o the_o church_n which_o with_o one_o voice_n say_v our_o father_n etc_n etc_n for_o he_o will_v not_o be_v the_o father_n of_o
education_n first_o therefore_o we_o must_v believe_v &_o not_o doubt_v that_o our_o prayer_n be_v hear_v second_o this_o hear_n must_v be_v thus_o define_v not_o that_o god_n give_v always_o that_o which_o we_o pray_v for_o but_o that_o which_o be_v profitable_a for_o we_o for_o god_n in_o that_o he_o be_v good_a can_v geve_v nothing_o but_o that_o which_o be_v good_a but_o we_o many_o time_n appoint_v a_o place_n wherein_o he_o will_v be_v worship_v even_o the_o holy_a hill_n of_o zion_n but_o also_o because_o he_o have_v the_o consent_n of_o his_o people_n so_o obedient_o to_o join_v with_o he_o in_o the_o true_a service_n &_o worship_n of_o the_o lord_n often_o time_n the_o lord_n have_v before_o promise_v by_o moses_n that_o he_o will_v appoint_v such_o a_o place_n for_o his_o sanctuary_n as_o shall_v be_v certain_a and_o stable_a for_o ever_o and_o yet_o above_o a_o thousand_o year_n together_o the_o ark_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v carry_v hither_o and_o thither_o from_o tent_n to_o tent_n 17â—_n from_o habitation_n to_o habitation_n have_v no_o certain_a place_n to_o rest_v in_o but_o afterwards_o it_o be_v show_v unto_o david_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v it_o remain_v in_o the_o hill_n zion_n and_o that_o he_o will_v have_v there_o a_o temple_n build_v wherein_o he_o will_v be_v worship_v by_o this_o example_n we_o be_v admonish_v that_o we_o have_v double_a cause_n to_o rejoice_v when_o so_o ever_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o only_o incline_v our_o heart_n by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o word_n but_o also_o do_v draw_v other_o unto_o the_o same_o with_o we_o that_o we_o may_v be_v all_o join_v together_o in_o the_o fellowship_n of_o faith_n we_o see_v the_o stubbornness_n of_o man_n heart_n to_o be_v such_o that_o the_o great_a number_n always_o murmur_v when_o so_o ever_o the_o lord_n speak_v and_o therefore_o no_o small_a cause_n have_v we_o to_o rejoice_v when_o we_o all_o consent_n together_o in_o one_o spirit_n and_o and_o one_o mind_n in_o the_o true_a service_n and_o worship_n of_o the_o lord_n these_o word_n i_o rejoice_v when_o they_o say_v etc_n etc_n seem_v to_o be_v very_o simple_a and_o to_o contain_v in_o they_o no_o great_a matter_n but_o if_o you_o look_v into_o the_o same_o with_o spiritual_a eye_n there_o appear_v a_o wonderful_a great_a majesty_n in_o they_o which_o because_o our_o papist_n can_v not_o see_v they_o do_v so_o cold_o and_o negligent_o pray_v read_v and_o sing_v this_o psalm_n and_o other_o that_o a_o man_n will_v think_v there_o be_v no_o tale_n so_o foolish_a or_o vain_a which_o they_o will_v not_o either_o recite_v or_o hear_v with_o more_o courage_n &_o delight_n these_o word_n therefore_o must_v be_v unfold_v &_o lay_v before_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o faithful_a for_o when_o he_o say_v we_o will_v go_v into_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n what_o notable_a thing_n can_v we_o see_v in_o these_o word_n if_o we_o do_v but_o only_o behold_v the_o stone_n timber_n gold_n and_o other_o ornament_n of_o the_o material_a temple_n but_o to_o go_v into_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n signify_v another_o manner_n of_o thing_n namely_o to_o come_v together_o where_o we_o may_v have_v god_n present_a with_o we_o hear_v his_o word_n call_v upon_o his_o holy_a name_n and_o receive_v help_n and_o succour_v in_o our_o necessity_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o false_a definition_n of_o the_o temple_n which_o the_o papist_n make_v that_o it_o be_v a_o house_n build_v with_o stone_n &_o timber_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n what_o this_o temple_n be_v they_o themselves_o know_v not_o for_o the_o temple_n of_o solomon_n be_v not_o therefore_o beautiful_a because_o it_o be_v adorn_v with_o gold_n and_o silver_n and_o other_o precious_a ornament_n but_o the_o true_a beauty_n of_o that_o temple_n be_v because_o in_o that_o place_n the_o people_n hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n call_v upon_o his_o name_n find_v he_o merciful_a give_v peace_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n etc_n etc_n this_o be_v right_o to_o behold_v the_o temple_n and_o not_o as_o the_o visured_a bishop_n behold_v their_o idolatrous_a temple_n when_o they_o consecrate_v it_o these_o be_v then_o great_a cause_n of_o joy_n and_o gladness_n to_o have_v access_n unto_o the_o lord_n to_o hear_v this_o consolation_n that_o he_o be_v our_o god_n which_o will_v hear_v we_o which_o will_v deliver_v we_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n which_o will_v forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n and_o at_o the_o last_o will_v give_v we_o everlasting_a life_n for_o these_o great_a benefit_n say_v david_n we_o give_v thank_n unto_o god_n and_o we_o rejoice_v that_o we_o may_v come_v together_o into_o that_o place_n wherein_o god_n work_v all_o these_o thing_n by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o word_n for_o it_o be_v the_o word_n alone_o whereby_o we_o know_v god_n whereby_o we_o come_v unto_o god_n and_o whereby_o he_o bestow_v these_o great_a benefit_n of_o his_o favour_n and_o love_n
devil_n the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n sin_n and_o death_n also_o against_o adulterer_n murderer_n thief_n false_a brethren_n etc_o etc_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n the_o advance_v of_o his_o kingdom_n chastity_n innocence_n charity_n etc_n etc_n for_o god_n be_v invisible_a and_o therefore_o when_o they_o be_v hear_v which_o teach_v and_o preach_v unto_o we_o the_o word_n of_o god_n than_o god_n himself_o be_v hear_v for_o he_o can_v not_o be_v hear_v but_o by_o witness_n and_o as_o s._n paul_n call_v they_o by_o his_o messenger_n that_o which_o be_v teach_v they_o in_o the_o church_n be_v invisible_a and_o absent_a and_o therefore_o can_v be_v apprehend_v by_o no_o other_o mean_n but_o by_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o word_n so_o the_o whole_a gospel_n be_v a_o the_o wicked_a and_o this_o preach_n be_v the_o testimony_n which_o david_n here_o speak_v of_o make_v unto_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n gather_v together_o in_o this_o place_n whereby_o they_o be_v know_v to_o be_v the_o peculiar_a and_o choose_a people_n of_o god_n from_o all_o other_o nation_n as_o he_o say_v in_o a_o other_o psalm_n he_o have_v not_o so_o deal_v with_o every_o nation_n wherefore_o we_o also_o have_v great_a cause_n to_o acknowledge_v the_o rich_a blessing_n of_o god_n that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v now_o pure_o &_o sincere_o preach_v amongst_o we_o as_o it_o be_v then_o in_o jerusalem_n and_o the_o sweet_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n sound_v in_o the_o ear_n &_o conscience_n of_o the_o godly_a to_o their_o singular_a comfort_n and_o consolation_n also_o the_o threaten_n of_o god_n publish_v whereby_o the_o wicked_a be_v call_v to_o repentance_n and_o the_o godly_a keep_v in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o mortification_n of_o the_o old_a man_n through_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o the_o father_n through_o christ_n and_o for_o christ_n sake_n pour_v upon_o they_o abundant_o which_o willing_o and_o glad_o receive_v this_o testimony_n this_o be_v one_o part_n then_o of_o the_o true_a worship_n of_o god_n to_o learn_v the_o way_n how_o to_o worship_v god_n in_o such_o sort_n as_o best_o please_v he_o which_o consist_v in_o teach_v of_o the_o word_n &_o hear_n of_o god_n when_o he_o speak_v unto_o we_o by_o his_o witness_n and_o therefore_o the_o devil_n desire_v nothing_o so_o much_o as_o to_o hinder_v the_o preach_v &_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n for_o this_o cause_n he_o raise_v up_o as_o you_o hear_v in_o the_o first_o psalm_n lie_v lip_n and_o deceitful_a tongue_n he_o stir_v up_o the_o world_n with_o sword_n and_o power_n to_o oppress_v the_o godly_a and_o even_o in_o ourselves_o he_o go_v about_o to_o deface_v this_o kind_n of_o service_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n by_o our_o devilish_a contempt_n and_o loathe_n of_o the_o same_o but_o contrariwise_o to_o build_v church_n and_o gorgeous_o to_o deck_v they_o for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o mass_n oblation_n false_a worship_n and_o idolatry_n all_o this_o he_o can_v abide_v well_o enough_o for_o by_o these_o thing_n he_o know_v that_o his_o strength_n be_v not_o diminish_v nor_o his_o power_n weaken_v but_o when_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v preach_v concern_v remission_n of_o sin_n the_o righteousness_n that_o come_v by_o christ_n and_o life_n everlasting_a this_o doctrine_n destroy_v his_o kingdom_n this_o cause_v he_o to_o rage_n and_o to_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_v possible_a how_o he_o may_v hinder_v the_o course_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v to_o praise_v the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n word_n this_o david_n make_v the_o second_o kind_n of_o worship_n when_o he_o commend_v his_o jerusalem_n and_o here_o again_o note_v that_o he_o speak_v nothing_o of_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o law_n for_o albeit_o he_o do_v not_o discommend_v they_o as_o i_o say_v before_o yet_o he_o reckon_v they_o but_o as_o chaff_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o fruit_n which_o follow_v thereof_o which_o be_v thank_n give_v and_o if_o he_o have_v name_v the_o sley_a of_o sacrifice_n every_o man_n have_v not_o be_v able_a to_o serve_v god_n with_o that_o kind_n of_o worship_n therefore_o he_o require_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o which_o they_o be_v able_a to_o do_v without_o great_a charge_n which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o very_o few_o do_v he_o do_v not_o condemn_v the_o build_n of_o the_o temple_n which_o afterward_o shall_v be_v do_v by_o his_o son_n solomon_n but_o do_v earnest_o desire_v the_o same_o and_o the_o cause_n why_o he_o do_v desire_v it_o here_o you_o see_v namely_o that_o first_o the_o name_n of_o god_n may_v there_o be_v preach_v and_o then_o that_o god_n may_v there_o accept_v the_o prayer_n of_o his_o people_n with_o praise_n and_o thank_n give_v for_o his_o benefit_n receive_v hitherto_o we_o have_v hear_v how_o the_o prophet_n extol_v and_o magnify_v the_o incomparable_a gift_n &_o benefit_n of_o god_n the_o word_n i_o mean_v with_o thank_n and_o praise_n unto_o god_n for_o the_o same_o for_o that_o be_v a_o benefit_n and_o blessing_n in_o deed_n which_o be_v know_v and_o acknowledge_v so_o to_o be_v all_o the_o world_n as_o we_o see_v be_v full_a &_o even_o glut_v with_o the_o benefit_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o it_o remain_v still_o in_o such_o blindness_n that_o it_o know_v they_o not_o to_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o take_v and_o use_v they_o not_o otherwise_o then_o hog_n do_v their_o draff_n &_o swill_n but_o david_n see_v that_o god_n have_v give_v he_o a_o kingdom_n wherein_o the_o pure_a word_n of_o god_n and_o true_a religion_n flourish_v this_o great_a benefit_n he_o acknowledge_v and_o therefore_o he_o so_o rejoice_v and_o magnify_v his_o jerusalem_n as_o a_o place_n appoint_v by_o the_o lords_z own_o mouth_n where_o the_o people_n may_v come_v together_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o to_o give_v thanks_n unto_o god_n for_o his_o benefit_n out_o of_o the_o which_o place_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o find_v god_n the_o gentile_n because_o they_o have_v not_o the_o word_n nor_o this_o hear_n whereof_o david_n here_o speak_v can_v not_o find_v god_n hereby_o we_o may_v see_v how_o horrible_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o contemn_v and_o to_o loathe_v the_o word_n for_o what_o can_v be_v more_o horrible_a than_o that_o man_n a_o weak_a creature_n nothing_o but_o earth_n &_o dust_n shall_v so_o lift_v up_o himself_o in_o pride_n that_o when_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n speak_v &_o most_o love_o invite_v he_o to_o hear_v he_o will_v not_o hear_v and_o yet_o we_o see_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o common_a than_o this_o impiety_n this_o horrible_a contempt_n this_o devilish_a loathe_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n amongst_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n the_o cause_n be_v for_o that_o we_o hear_v not_o the_o lord_n speak_v now_o unto_o we_o in_o his_o majesty_n as_o he_o speak_v in_o the_o mount_v sinai_n at_o what_o time_n the_o people_n be_v astonish_v &_o tremble_v at_o the_o terrible_a voice_n of_o the_o lord_n &_o yet_o how_o soon_o have_v they_o forget_v the_o lord_n and_o murmur_v both_o against_o the_o lord_n and_o against_o moses_n thus_o in_o his_o majesty_n he_o speak_v no_o more_o but_o he_o speak_v now_o unto_o we_o by_o man_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v contemn_v horrible_a it_o be_v that_o sodom_n be_v burn_v up_o with_o fire_n from_o heaven_n horrible_a it_o be_v also_o that_o the_o whole_a world_n be_v destroy_v with_o water_n moreover_o the_o daily_a example_n of_o impiety_n and_o wickedness_n as_o murder_v whoredom_n etc_n etc_n be_v such_o that_o they_o can_v not_o be_v hear_v without_o horror_n &_o tremble_a but_o how_o horrible_a so_o ever_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v yet_o be_v it_o much_o more_o horrible_a to_o contemn_v god_n when_o by_o his_o word_n he_o speak_v unto_o we_o which_o all_o the_o world_n do_v at_o this_o day_n not_o only_o they_o which_o persecute_v the_o word_n with_o open_a tyranny_n but_o such_o also_o as_o be_v even_o amongst_o we_o &_o at_o the_o beginning_n seem_v to_o receive_v this_o doctrine_n with_o great_a rejoice_v wherefore_o david_n exhort_v
that_o he_o be_v able_a likewise_o to_o destroy_v both_o body_n and_o soul_n if_o god_n do_v so_o permit_v but_o also_o to_o stir_v we_o up_o to_o faith_n and_o prayer_n that_o we_o shall_v call_v upon_o he_o for_o aid_n and_o succour_v against_o these_o perilous_a snare_n and_o be_v deliver_v shall_v give_v he_o thanks_n and_o praise_n for_o the_o same_o moreover_o every_o tentation_n be_v a_o snare_n whether_o it_o be_v of_o the_o flesh_n or_o of_o the_o spirit_n persecution_n torment_n imprisonment_n slander_v disease_n and_o infirmity_n of_o the_o body_n be_v snare_n which_o as_o they_o be_v permit_v of_o god_n to_o exercise_v and_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n so_o by_o the_o malice_n of_o satan_n they_o be_v wrought_v to_o afflict_v and_o to_o vex_v man_n that_o he_o may_v bring_v they_o to_o infidelity_n and_o desperation_n and_o so_o into_o the_o snare_n of_o eternal_a death_n from_o the_o which_o snare_n but_o by_o the_o special_a grace_n of_o god_n there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o escape_v satan_n thus_o our_o life_n lie_v always_o open_a to_o the_o snare_n of_o satan_n and_o we_o as_o silly_a bird_n be_v like_a at_o every_o moment_n to_o be_v carry_v away_o notwithstanding_o the_o lord_n make_v a_o way_n for_o we_o to_o escape_v yea_o when_o satan_n seem_v to_o be_v most_o sure_o of_o we_o by_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n the_o snare_n be_v break_v &_o we_o be_v deliver_v experience_n hereof_o we_o have_v in_o those_o which_o be_v inward_o afflict_v &_o with_o heaviness_n of_o spirit_n grievous_o oppress_v that_o when_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v in_o utter_a despair_n &_o ready_a as_o you_o will_v say_v now_o to_o perish_v yet_o even_o at_o the_o last_o pinch_n &_o in_o the_o uttermost_a extremity_n come_v the_o sweet_a comfort_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n and_o raise_v they_o up_o again_o when_o we_o be_v most_o ready_a to_o perish_v then_o be_v god_n most_o ready_a to_o help_v except_o the_o lord_n have_v help_v i_o say_v david_n my_o soul_n have_v almost_o dwell_v in_o silence_n 93._o verse_n 8._o our_o help_n be_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n who_o have_v make_v both_o heaven_n and_o earth_n this_o be_v the_o conclusion_n of_o thanksgiving_n affliction_n contain_v a_o worthy_a sentence_n of_o great_a comfort_n that_o against_o sin_n the_o horror_n of_o death_n and_o other_o danger_n there_o be_v no_o other_o help_n or_o safety_n but_o only_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n if_o that_o be_v not_o say_v he_o we_o shall_v fall_v into_o all_o manner_n of_o sin_n blasphemy_n error_n and_o into_o all_o kind_n of_o calamity_n but_o our_o help_n be_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o preserve_v our_o faith_n and_o our_o life_n against_o the_o devil_n and_o the_o world_n and_o as_o you_o hear_v in_o the_o other_o verse_n before_o so_o he_o show_v in_o this_o verse_n also_o that_o god_n suffer_v his_o saint_n to_o be_v tempt_v and_o in_o their_o tentation_n to_o fall_v into_o great_a distress_n as_o even_o now_o ready_a to_o be_v drown_v and_o swallow_v up_o present_o with_o great_a flood_n of_o water_n yet_o notwithstanding_o this_o comfort_n he_o show_v they_o that_o he_o will_v not_o utter_o forsake_v they_o by_o the_o which_o example_n we_o may_v learn_v to_o know_v the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o to_o seek_v our_o help_n and_o safety_n at_o his_o hand_n which_o suffer_v his_o people_n to_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o furnace_n of_o egypt_n not_o to_o their_o utter_a destruction_n but_o only_o to_o kill_v the_o old_a man_n with_o his_o vain_a hope_n and_o confidence_n which_o he_o have_v in_o his_o own_o strength_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o god_n suffer_v his_o people_n so_o to_o be_v exercise_v for_o it_o be_v not_o hear_v read_v talk_a or_o teach_v nor_o speculation_n only_o which_o make_v a_o christian_a man_n but_o practice_n be_v that_o which_o special_o be_v require_v in_o a_o true_a christian_a that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o cross_n to_o pluck_v down_o the_o flesh_n and_o bring_v it_o to_o nothing_o that_o man_n despair_v of_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o see_v no_o succour_n in_o himself_o shall_v resign_v himself_o whole_o unto_o the_o lord_n look_v with_o patience_n and_o hope_n for_o help_v at_o his_o hand_n for_o this_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n neither_o must_v we_o imagine_v to_o ourselves_o any_o other_o god_n than_o such_o a_o one_o as_o will_v help_v the_o afflict_a and_o oppress_v with_o desperation_n and_o other_o calamity_n to_o know_v this_o doctrine_n be_v one_o piece_n of_o the_o victory_n for_o they_o that_o know_v it_o not_o when_o tentation_n assail_v they_o either_o do_v despair_n or_o seek_v other_o help_n let_v we_o learn_v then_o out_o of_o this_o psalm_n that_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o exercise_v his_o saint_n with_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n who_o suffer_v great_a flood_n of_o water_n to_o run_v over_o their_o head_n who_o also_o permit_v they_o to_o fall_v into_o the_o snare_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o try_v every_o way_n not_o to_o destroy_v they_o but_o to_o show_v they_o what_o they_o be_v of_o themselves_o &_o so_o to_o teach_v they_o to_o trust_v in_o his_o save_a health_n but_o the_o flesh_n look_v to_o the_o power_n and_o multitude_n of_o the_o adversary_n and_o her_o own_o infirmity_n but_o to_o look_v unto_o god_n and_o to_o hope_v for_o his_o help_n and_o succour_n it_o be_v not_o able_a wherefore_o this_o be_v a_o necessary_a conclusion_n our_o help_n be_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v a_o short_a sentence_n but_o it_o set_v forth_o most_o worthy_a doctrine_n and_o consolation_n whereof_o â–ª_o special_o in_o these_o latter_a day_n we_o have_v great_a need_n see_v the_o pope_n together_o with_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o prince_n &_o ruler_n of_o the_o world_n so_o cruel_o do_v persecute_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o respect_n of_o these_o huge_a mountain_n what_o be_v we_o small_a molehill_n yea_o so_o much_o oppress_v yet_o be_v we_o not_o forsake_v but_o be_v safe_a through_o our_o confidence_n and_o trust_n in_o his_o help_n but_o to_o this_o wisdom_n it_o be_v unpossible_a for_o we_o to_o attain_v without_o continual_a affliction_n affliction_n whereby_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o the_o confidence_n of_o all_o worldly_a succour_n shall_v be_v beat_v down_o for_o vexation_n and_o trouble_n bring_v understanding_n as_o isaiah_n say_v whereby_o we_o be_v compel_v to_o cry_v help_v lord_n for_o else_o we_o perish_v so_o in_o the_o last_o hour_n when_o death_n approach_v there_o
