godly_a be_v common_o exercise_v withal_o as_o the_o loss_n of_o good_n wife_n child_n &_o such_o other_o may_v yet_o be_v overcome_v or_o bear_v with_o patience_n moreover_o in_o those_o which_o be_v together_o where_o we_o may_v have_v god_n present_a with_o we_o hear_v his_o word_n call_v upon_o his_o holy_a name_n and_o receive_v help_n and_o succour_v in_o our_o necessity_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o false_a definition_n of_o the_o temple_n which_o the_o papist_n make_v that_o it_o be_v a_o house_n build_v with_o stone_n &_o timber_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n what_o this_o temple_n be_v they_o themselves_o know_v not_o for_o the_o temple_n of_o solomon_n be_v not_o therefore_o beautiful_a because_o it_o be_v adorn_v with_o gold_n and_o silver_n and_o other_o precious_a ornament_n but_o the_o true_a beauty_n of_o that_o temple_n be_v because_o in_o that_o place_n the_o people_n hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n call_v upon_o his_o name_n find_v he_o merciful_a give_v peace_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n etc_n etc_n this_o be_v right_o to_o behold_v the_o temple_n and_o not_o as_o the_o visured_a bishop_n behold_v their_o idolatrous_a temple_n when_o they_o consecrate_v it_o these_o be_v then_o great_a cause_n of_o joy_n and_o gladness_n to_o have_v access_n unto_o the_o lord_n to_o hear_v this_o consolation_n that_o he_o be_v our_o god_n which_o will_v hear_v we_o which_o will_v deliver_v we_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n which_o will_v forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n and_o at_o the_o last_o will_v give_v we_o everlasting_a life_n for_o these_o great_a benefit_n say_v david_n we_o give_v thank_n unto_o god_n and_o we_o rejoice_v that_o we_o may_v come_v together_o into_o that_o place_n wherein_o god_n work_v all_o these_o thing_n by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o word_n for_o it_o be_v the_o word_n alone_o whereby_o we_o know_v god_n whereby_o we_o come_v unto_o god_n and_o whereby_o he_o bestow_v these_o great_a benefit_n of_o his_o favour_n and_o love_n
this_o distinction_n be_v not_o so_o well_o know_v by_o practice_n as_o it_o be_v by_o speculation_n practice_v for_o if_o we_o have_v this_o practice_n in_o deed_n we_o shall_v right_o discern_v between_o the_o law_n &_o the_o gospel_n also_o between_o the_o disciple_n of_o the_o law_n and_o of_o the_o gospel_n &_o beat_v back_o satan_n with_o this_o answer_n that_o like_o a_o lie_a spirit_n he_o seek_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o blind_a and_o deceive_v the_o heart_n with_o falsehood_n and_o lie_n for_o whereas_o hard_a and_o stony_a heart_n be_v those_o he_o do_v not_o kill_v or_o terrify_v but_o flatter_v and_o fill_v they_o with_o hope_n &_o fair_a promise_n which_o do_v not_o pertain_v to_o such_o heart_n contrariwise_o where_o as_o such_o tender_a and_o timorous_a heart_n be_v as_o be_v to_o much_o terrify_v already_o and_o therefore_o shall_v be_v confirm_v &_o raise_v up_o with_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n those_o heart_n satan_n most_o of_o all_o not_o only_o go_v about_o further_o to_o afflict_v and_o terrify_v but_o to_o beat_v they_o down_o also_o to_o utter_v discomfort_n wherefore_o the_o christian_a man_n must_v learn_v and_o labour_n by_o feeling_n and_o practice_n to_o make_v this_o distinction_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o say_v unto_o satan_n away_o from_o i_o satan_n with_o thy_o lie_n when_o i_o be_o void_a of_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n secure_a and_o hard_a heart_a then_o come_v and_o plead_v the_o law_n against_o i_o then_o will_v i_o hear_v thou_o for_o then_o that_o be_v the_o time_n to_o teach_v the_o law_n but_o since_o thou_o come_v now_o unto_o i_o with_o the_o law_n whereas_o my_o heart_n be_v terrify_v already_o with_o sin_n &_o death_n i_o will_v not_o hear_v thou_o for_o thy_o doctrine_n pertain_v not_o unto_o i_o but_o laughter_n and_o joy_n not_o terror_n and_o death_n so_o shall_v satan_n be_v answer_v when_o he_o go_v about_o to_o terrify_v we_o but_o by_o experience_n we_o feel_v that_o when_o most_o need_n be_v our_o heart_n be_v not_o able_a thus_o to_o answer_v although_o we_o have_v hear_v these_o thing_n before_o never_o so_o often_o the_o cause_n be_v this_o that_o albeit_o heaven_n be_v we_o and_o wide_a open_a for_o we_o yet_o such_o be_v our_o nature_n and_o such_o be_v our_o infirmity_n that_o all_o this_o can_v not_o make_v we_o so_o joyful_a as_o the_o gape_a gulf_n and_o horror_n of_o hell_n do_v terrify_v we_o so_o that_o one_o cogitation_n of_o our_o sin_n do_v more_o afflict_v we_o than_o all_o the_o teach_n and_o preach_v of_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n can_v comfort_v we_o wherefore_o we_o must_v earnest_o endeavour_n to_o learn_v this_o practice_n or_o at_o the_o least_o to_o attain_v to_o some_o knowledge_n thereof_o and_o raise_v up_o ourselves_o with_o these_o word_n that_o the_o gospel_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o laughter_n and_o joy_n which_o proper_o pertain_v to_o the_o captive_n that_o be_v to_o those_o that_o feel_v the_o captivity_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n to_o the_o fleshy_a and_o tender_a heart_n terrify_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o the_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n of_o god_n these_o be_v the_o disciple_n in_o who_o heart_n shall_v be_v plant_v laughter_n and_o joy_n and_o which_o only_o shall_v hear_v the_o voice_n of_o joy_n and_o gladness_n in_o the_o tabernacle_n of_o the_o righteous_a 117._o and_o that_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o this_o verse_n set_v forth_o for_o it_o signify_v that_o this_o people_n be_v in_o zion_n and_o after_o the_o outward_a show_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o people_n then_o have_v the_o promise_n now_o he_o turn_v to_o the_o gentile_n who_o he_o call_v to_o the_o partake_n of_o this_o laughter_n then_o shall_v they_o say_v among_o the_o gentile_n etc_n etc_n the_o gentile_n natural_o hate_v and_o disdain_v the_o jew_n and_o can_v abide_v nothing_o less_o than_o their_o religion_n yet_o these_o gentile_n say_v he_o when_o this_o laughter_n this_o these_o thing_n be_v give_v good_a success_n or_o else_o all_o my_o endeavour_n all_o my_o travel_n be_v in_o vain_a for_o if_o the_o first_o cause_n be_v lack_v the_o second_o cause_n can_v do_v nothing_o and_o thus_o teach_v this_o psalm_n as_o touch_v the_o efficient_a cause_n in_o like_a manner_n it_o teach_v also_o concern_v the_o final_a cause_n government_n whereby_o we_o may_v understand_v that_o all_o thing_n be_v the_o mere_a gift_n of_o god_n and_o pertain_v to_o the_o glory_n and_o the_o service_n of_o god_n &_o not_o to_o our_o own_o glory_n and_o our_o own_o pleasure_n so_o that_o we_o ought_v to_o say_v thus_o have_v the_o lord_n do_v ht_o have_v give_v this_o happy_a end_n to_o he_o therefore_o be_v praise_n and_o glory_n for_o ever_o amen_n verse_n they_o gain_v nothing_o else_o but_o extreme_a ingratitude_n exile_n how_o many_o excellent_a man_n in_o the_o common_a wealth_n of_o athens_n how_o many_o among_o the_o lacedaemonian_n how_o many_o in_o the_o common_a wealth_n of_o rome_n be_v condemn_v &_o cast_v into_o exile_n by_o unthankful_a citizen_n yea_o this_o be_v general_o the_o condition_n of_o all_o man_n which_o in_o their_o vocation_n whether_o it_o be_v private_a or_o public_a endeavour_n to_o live_v upright_o and_o careful_o travel_v to_o do_v good_a in_o the_o common_a weal_n that_o they_o be_v hinder_v by_o the_o malice_n &_o deceitful_a practice_n of_o other_o run_v never_o bring_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o take_v in_o hand_n for_o satan_n devise_v so_o many_o let_n stir_v up_o so_o many_o enemy_n such_o hatred_n &_o conspiracy_n against_o they_o that_o either_o they_o be_v overcome_v with_o impatience_n and_o so_o cast_v away_o all_o care_n of_o the_o common_a wealth_n or_o be_v move_v with_o great_a indignation_n they_o become_v cruel_a against_o those_o who_o they_o see_v to_o withstand_v their_o proceed_n thus_o either_o of_o a_o desperate_a mind_n they_o forsake_v all_o or_o with_o cruelty_n and_o tyranny_n they_o will_v rule_v all_o mean_a but_o let_v we_o learn_v to_o keep_v a_o mean_a and_o if_o god_n have_v call_v we_o to_o the_o government_n of_o a_o family_n let_v we_o say_v oh_o lord_n thou_o have_v give_v i_o a_o wife_n house_n and_o child_n over_o these_o by_o thy_o authority_n i_o be_o make_v a_o ruler_n i_o will_v do_v therefore_o what_o in_o i_o lie_v that_o all_o thing_n may_v be_v well_o govern_v if_o they_o have_v not_o such_o success_n as_o i_o desire_v i_o will_v write_v patience_n but_o if_o they_o come_v well_o to_o pass_v and_o take_v good_a success_n then_o will_v i_o say_v thanks_n and_o praise_n be_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n it_o be_v not_o my_o workâ—_n but_o thy_o gift_n alone_o and_o even_o so_o must_v he_o do_v which_o be_v call_v to_o all_o thing_n which_o he_o think_v shall_v have_v have_v most_o happy_a success_n fall_v out_o clean_a contrary_n to_o his_o expectation_n he_o rage_v and_o lay_v all_o the_o fault_n in_o matrimony_n but_o most_o wicked_o for_o thy_o fauk_n and_o thy_o folly_n it_o be_v which_o so_o do_v since_o thou_o will_v needs_o be_v the_o efficient_a cause_n of_o the_o govern_n and_o guide_n of_o thy_o family_n which_o thing_n god_n have_v not_o give_v unto_o thou_o for_o thou_o shall_v have_v be_v but_o only_o the_o instrumental_a thereof_o wherefore_o submit_v thyself_o rather_o to_o a_o other_o you_o to_o consider_v the_o example_n of_o this_o great_a folly_n which_o be_v to_o be_v see_v every_o where_o abundant_o in_o prince_n court_n in_o city_n and_o family_n for_o thus_o do_v they_o think_v i_o be_o the_o author_n and_o master_n of_o this_o family_n this_o policy_n this_o government_n etc_n etc_n most_o worthy_o therefore_o be_v they_o trouble_v and_o vex_v when_o there_o follow_v no_o such_o success_n as_o they_o look_v for_o and_o hereupon_o follow_v as_o i_o say_v either_o a_o miserable_a confusion_n both_o in_o household_n and_o politic_a government_n or_o else_o plain_a tyranny_n so_o in_o matrimony_n if_o neither_o the_o husband_n will_v bear_v with_o his_o wife_n nor_o the_o wife_n will_v give_v place_n to_o her_o husband_n not_o only_o the_o mutual_a love_n and_o concord_n in_o matrimony_n be_v break_v but_o also_o it_o so_o fall_v out_o that_o the_o husband_n be_v change_v into_o a_o tyrant_n or_o else_o he_o neglect_v and_o forsake_v all_o together_o what_o must_v we_o here_o do_v the_o pope_n answer_v and_o give_v this_o counsel_n that_o we_o shall_v fly_v into_o some_o solitary_a place_n or_o into_o some_o monastery_n not_o so_o say_v the_o holy_a ghost_n this_o be_v not_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n but_o of_o the_o devil_n but_o thus_o do_v thou_o consider_v that_o thou_o be_v god_n instrument_n &_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v yet_o a_o other_o magistrate_n and_o principal_a governor_n of_o the_o house_n god._n who_o name_n be_v the_o lord_n except_o he_o be_v the_o principal_a cause_n it_o shall_v follow_v as_o this_o household_n government_n as_o a_o god_n and_o think_v that_o thy_o wisdom_n and_o thy_o policy_n be_v able_a to_o govern_v these_o thing_n and_o that_o thou_o have_v no_o need_n to_o lift_v up_o thine_o eye_n to_o he_o which_o be_v above_o and_o to_o desire_v his_o help_n when_o thou_o see_v therefore_o that_o afterwards_o it_o fall_v out_o otherwise_o than_o do_v thou_o learn_v to_o sing_v midst_n of_o devil_n the_o husband_n as_o touch_v the_o flesh_n soon_o loathe_v or_o hate_v the_o wife_n or_o the_o wife_n her_o husband_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n hereof_o even_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n for_o that_o matrimony_n consist_v in_o the_o flesh_n which_o be_v whole_o corrupt_a &_o poison_a with_o sin_n this_o the_o flesh_n i_o mean_v satan_n inflame_v with_o hatred_n and_o every_o light_a offence_n or_o else_o with_o jealousy_n wherefore_o if_o thou_o look_v not_o unto_o the_o will_n of_o god_n thy_o matrimony_n can_v never_o be_v unto_o thou_o either_o stable_n or_o comfortable_a wherefore_o youth_n must_v be_v well_o instruct_v as_o touch_v matrimony_n that_o when_o any_o man_n shall_v marry_v a_o wife_n he_o may_v live_v with_o she_o in_o the_o favour_n and_o blessing_n of_o god_n and_o say_v lord_n this_o be_v thy_o gift_n that_o i_o be_o a_o man_n this_o wife_n also_o be_v thy_o gift_n we_o be_v in_o the_o world_n and_o this_o frail_a flesh_n and_o in_o lord_n out_o of_o zion_n for_o he_o be_v constrain_v to_o make_v mention_n of_o this_o place_n for_o the_o avoid_n of_o idolatry_n for_o god_n do_v reveal_v unto_o they_o that_o in_o this_o only_a place_n he_o will_v be_v worship_v wherefore_o under_o the_o veil_n and_o shadow_n of_o the_o promise_n they_o worship_v christ_n also_o who_o be_v include_v in_o the_o promise_n but_o now_o that_o zion_n be_v destroy_v and_o go_v the_o treasure_n be_v open_v that_o be_v to_o say_v christ_n who_o then_o be_v hide_v in_o the_o promise_n as_o under_o a_o veil_n wherefore_o let_v we_o remember_v that_o all_o such_o place_n must_v be_v apply_v unto_o christ_n like_a as_o also_o we_o be_v teach_v by_o experience_n that_o in_o tentation_n there_o be_v no_o consolation_n whereby_o afflict_a madness_n for_o if_o patience_n suffer_v any_o thing_n it_o come_v of_o a_o certain_a desperation_n as_o when_o a_o man_n thus_o think_v with_o himself_o all_o that_o i_o suffer_v be_v but_o in_o vain_a this_o patience_n be_v turn_v into_o fury_n and_o be_v oppress_v with_o desperation_n â–ª_o but_o christian_a patience_n will_v not_o suffer_v itself_o to_o be_v oppress_v but_o continual_o ourselves_o that_o these_o be_v matter_n of_o faith_n and_o not_o of_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n for_o to_o believe_v be_v not_o to_o feel_v not_o because_o these_o thing_n shall_v never_o be_v feel_v which_o we_o now_o believe_v but_o because_o faith_n must_v go_v before_o feeling_n and_o experience_n and_o we_o must_v believe_v the_o word_n although_o we_o feel_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o judgement_n never_o so_o much_o to_o the_o contrary_n as_o when_o our_o heart_n oppress_v with_o calamity_n do_v think_v god_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o we_o not_o to_o care_v for_o we_o but_o to_o hate_v we_o then_o faith_n clean_a contrary_n must_v thus_o assure_v itself_o that_o with_o god_n there_o be_v neither_o anger_n nor_o hatred_n that_o he_o neither_o think_v of_o
