labour_n and_o hasten_v thereafter_o and_o may_v we_o not_o give_v our_o god_n just_a cause_n to_o withdraw_v his_o countenance_n from_o we_o by_o fall_v into_o gross_a sin_n dote_v on_o the_o fade_a he_o have_v no_o root_n how_o soever_o for_o his_o credit_n and_o profit_n he_o must_v sometime_o show_v religious_a yet_o by_o reason_n of_o difference_n of_o company_n change_n of_o time_n and_o occasion_n he_o must_v even_o for_o the_o same_o end_n of_o credit_n and_o profit_n cast_v off_o his_o visor_n of_o holiness_n and_o so_o appear_v in_o his_o true_a likeness_n to_o the_o satisfy_n of_o such_o to_o who_o nothing_o but_o gross_a and_o desperate_a wickedness_n will_v give_v any_o contentment_n this_o be_v certain_a that_o as_o the_o hypocrite_n in_o his_o best_a devotion_n aim_v only_o at_o carnal_a end_n so_o in_o his_o best_a worship_n he_o fashion_n himself_o to_o the_o world_n and_o measure_n himself_o by_o it_o love_v either_o he_o must_v only_o go_v and_o so_o far_o as_o the_o time_n will_v bear_v or_o his_o leader_n go_v before_o or_o flesh_n and_o blood_n will_v brook_v and_o it_o be_v his_o wisdom_n to_o turn_v with_o the_o time_n to_o be_v rule_v by_o his_o better_n to_o be_v indifferent_a to_o all_o strain_n that_o so_o he_o may_v gain_v by_o all_o nay_o do_v not_o this_o necessity_n lie_v upon_o the_o hypocrite_n that_o howsoever_o for_o a_o time_n he_o must_v gloze_v and_o fawn_v upon_o the_o truth_n while_o it_o be_v his_o pack_n horse_n to_o further_a he_o to_o promotion_n riches_n etc._n etc._n yet_o when_o by_o plunge_v himself_o into_o worldly_a course_n he_o must_v necessary_o cross_v in_o his_o outward_a action_n the_o power_n of_o that_o truth_n which_o he_o make_v profession_n of_o and_o so_o thereby_o wound_n and_o gall_v his_o conscience_n must_v he_o not_o now_o for_o his_o credit_n abase_v and_o vilify_v that_o truth_n which_o before_o he_o so_o magnify_v as_o be_v either_o too_o severe_a and_o precise_a because_o he_o can_v reach_v it_o 1.21_o 1._o cor._n 1.21_o or_o be_v foolishness_n and_o madness_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v now_o more_o wise_a more_o sober_a then_o to_o be_v guide_v by_o it_o you_o must_v may_v be_v more_o easy_o and_o full_o feed_v by_o they_o three_o also_o here_o be_v meet_v withal_o that_o damnable_a and_o atheistical_a position_n that_o we_o may_v have_v too_o much_o knowledge_n too_o much_o teach_v that_o it_o puff_v up_o the_o people_n and_o make_v they_o new_a fangle_a see_v the_o truth_n be_v that_o though_o the_o people_n be_v better_o be_v without_o then_o with_o that_o which_o be_v mix_v with_o poison_n and_o tread_v under_o our_o foot_n for_o indeed_o there_o be_v too_o much_o of_o that_o this_o general_o excuse_v for_o or_o exclude_v that_o which_o shall_v be_v wholesome_a so_o we_o have_v rather_o just_a cause_n to_o complain_v of_o the_o want_n of_o the_o other_o we_o ought_v rather_o to_o wish_v that_o all_o god_n people_n can_v prophesy_v we_o shall_v prayer_n of_o the_o saint_n so_o be_v heaven_n more_o enlarge_v to_o the_o increase_n of_o their_o love_n the_o lord_n hear_v the_o prayer_n of_o the_o poor_a and_o enlarge_v the_o heart_n of_o his_o 1._o cor._n 15._o and_o may_v not_o out_o spiritual_a wisdom_n in_o avoid_v of_o unnecessary_a trouble_n expose_v we_o sometime_o to_o this_o false_a imputation_n that_o we_o have_v leave_v our_o first_o love_n 1._o yea_o sure_o if_o either_o by_o wise_a and_o modest_a answer_n we_o avoid_v trouble_n 2._o or_o by_o conceal_v of_o that_o truth_n which_o we_o be_v not_o bind_v in_o conscience_n to_o discover_v we_o so_o escape_v 3._o or_o by_o avoid_v the_o rage_n of_o our_o enemy_n when_o our_o time_n be_v not_o yet_o come_v we_o be_v yet_o free_v from_o trouble_n by_o remove_v from_o our_o habitation_n 4._o or_o by_o change_v our_o habit_n and_o feature_n we_o so_o avoid_v the_o fury_n of_o the_o adversary_n if_o by_o any_o of_o these_o through_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n we_o escape_v such_o trouble_n which_o other_o for_o want_v of_o this_o wisdom_n be_v overtake_v with_o present_o we_o be_v charge_v with_o want_n of_o zeal_n we_o be_v condemn_v to_o be_v lukewarm_a to_o have_v leave_v our_o first_o love_n and_o etc._n etc._n 5._o especial_o if_o we_o use_v our_o good_n as_o a_o mean_n to_o redeem_v the_o body_n from_o trouble_n oh_o this_o be_v censure_v as_o unlawful_a and_o so_o avoid_v trouble_n as_o by_o unlawful_a mean_n we_o be_v challenge_v of_o cowardice_n want_v of_o zeal_n corruption_n etc._n etc._n a_o imputation_n how_o unjust_a and_o uncharitable_a it_o be_v may_v appear_v by_o these_o circumstance_n 1._o why_o and_o clear_v from_o this_o imputation_n i'faith_o how_o and_o who_o to_o be_v give_v account_n of_o 1._o to_o the_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n and_o why_o because_o we_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o give_v a_o account_n of_o our_o faith_n to_o every_o private_a man_n but_o only_o to_o the_o magistrate_n and_o whosoever_o have_v lawful_a authority_n to_o require_v it_o at_o our_o hand_n as_o the_o minister_n and_o such_o as_o have_v charge_n over_o us._n and_o that_o because_o hereby_o they_o may_v have_v comfort_n in_o discharge_n of_o their_o duty_n that_o they_o have_v not_o labour_v in_o vain_a or_o 2._o may_v be_v humble_v in_o our_o want_n of_o profit_v and_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n and_o so_o increase_v their_o pain_n and_o prayer_n for_o us._n 3._o they_o be_v in_o god_n stead_n and_o in_o refuse_v to_o give_v a_o account_n unto_o they_o we_o deny_v and_o renounce_v even_o god_n himself_o 4._o they_o may_v be_v provoke_v hereby_o to_o perseverance_n and_o maintenance_n of_o the_o truth_n 5._o though_o they_o must_v not_o be_v lord_n over_o the_o conscience_n to_o make_v or_o alter_v the_o truth_n yet_o they_o be_v witness_n unto_o the_o conscience_n concern_v the_o truth_n yea_o they_o be_v approver_n and_o maintainer_n thereof_o to_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o believer_n and_o furtherance_n of_o his_o faith_n and_o therefore_o though_o we_o give_v not_o account_v of_o our_o faith_n either_o 1._o to_o the_o scorner_n that_o hereby_o will_v take_v occasion_n to_o insult_v and_o blaspheme_v our_o god_n and_o his_o sacred_a truth_n 2._o or_o to_o the_o open_a enemy_n that_o as_o he_o have_v no_o call_v to_o require_v of_o faith_n to_o who_o not_o to_o be_v give_v information_n thereby_o lest_o we_o bear_v the_o air_n &_o run_v before_o we_o be_v call_v expose_v our_o profession_n to_o contempt_n etc._n etc._n 4._o or_o to_o the_o private_a christian_a otherwise_o then_o in_o a_o case_n of_o necessity_n on_o our_o part_n to_o remove_v a_o false_a imputation_n and_o on_o his_o part_n to_o guide_v he_o that_o be_v in_o darkness_n and_o desire_v our_o help_n yet_o do_v we_o not_o herein_o betray_v our_o faith_n but_o rather_o wise_o maintain_v the_o honour_n and_o preserve_v the_o virtue_n thereof_o both_o in_o defend_v the_o same_o from_o the_o reproach_n of_o the_o wicked_a as_o also_o in_o reserve_v the_o use_n thereof_o to_o it_o fit_a season_n and_o occasion_n when_o our_o god_n shall_v be_v best_o glorify_v our_o profession_n justify_v that_o we_o may_v not_o trust_v in_o ourselves_o but_o in_o the_o live_a god_n which_o raise_v from_o the_o dead_a that_o so_o after_o we_o have_v suffer_v a_o little_a we_o may_v be_v fit_v to_o eternal_a joy_n that_o so_o in_o our_o outward_a suffering_n our_o inward_a consolation_n may_v abound_v be_v not_o here_o a_o gracious_a recompense_n of_o our_o former_a loss_n be_v not_o here_o a_o marvelous_a mean_n so_o to_o restore_v the_o same_o that_o god_n may_v have_v the_o glory_n that_o we_o by_o this_o mean_n may_v be_v prepare_v unto_o glory_n shall_v not_o our_o love_n be_v now_o glorious_o try_v in_o suffer_v for_o the_o will_n of_o god_n shall_v it_o not_o be_v much_o more_o testify_v in_o endure_v so_o great_a affliction_n shall_v it_o not_o hereby_o be_v purge_v of_o all_o that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v perfect_a and_o entire_a want_v nothing_o 1._o jam._n 3.4_o sure_o howsoever_o it_o fall_v yet_o let_v it_o comfort_v we_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v not_o here_o challenge_v the_o church_n of_o ephesus_n that_o it_o have_v lose_v all_o her_o love_n or_o that_o it_o have_v absolute_o lose_v she_o first_o love_n but_o only_o that_o it_o have_v leave_v it_o for_o a_o time_n and_o therefore_o it_o may_v recover_v again_o and_o it_o have_v but_o leave_v she_o first_o love_n not_o altogether_o be_v bereave_v of_o all_o love_n well_o may_v it_o leave_v it_o first_o love_n but_o it_o shall_v not_o loose_v all_o and_o for_o our_o further_a satisfaction_n take_v we_o these_o rule_n that_o we_o be_v sound_o in_o some_o measure_n recover_v and_o have_v regain_v true_a joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o our_o salvation_n 1._o if_o our_o joy_n be_v restore_v we_o be_v also_o more_o enable_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o godliness_n grow_v more_o in_o grace_n and_o in_o obedience_n to_o the_o word_n 2._o if_o our_o joy_n be_v daily_a accompany_v with_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n and_o fear_v of_o ourselves_o that_o we_o may_v fall_v again_o with_o more_o sobriety_n in_o the_o use_n of_o worldly_a comfort_n and_o more_o hunger_n after_o durable_a joy_n 3._o if_o we_o be_v more_o wean_v from_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n and_o take_v less_o joy_n in_o the_o flesh_n and_o earthly_a thing_n know_v no_o man_n after_o the_o flesh_n 4._o if_o we_o can_v rejoice_v in_o the_o further_a increase_n of_o the_o church_n and_o flourish_a estate_n thereof_o abroad_o though_o it_o go_v not_o so_o well_o with_o our_o own_o particular_a 5._o and_o can_v also_o weep_v with_o they_o that_o languish_v abroad_o though_o our_o own_o cup_n run_v over_o 6._o still_o submit_v ourself_o to_o the_o cross_n 7._o and_o triumph_v in_o our_o great_a tribulation_n 8._o if_o our_o joy_n be_v powerful_a to_o raise_v we_o daily_o from_o sin_n that_o so_o mercy_n in_o their_o great_a fail_n see_v the_o lord_n be_v faithful_a and_o they_o shall_v recover_v though_o not_o so_o sensible_a a_o measure_n as_o before_o they_o have_v yet_o sufficient_a to_o fit_v they_o to_o the_o enjoy_n of_o that_o happiness_n that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n have_v purchase_v for_o they_o and_o therefore_o let_v they_o use_v the_o holy_a mean_n that_o they_o may_v recover_v namely_o such_o as_o be_v before_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o recovery_n out_o of_o apostasy_n and_o regain_n first_o love_n and_o hold_v out_o to_o the_o end_n and_o if_o happy_o with_o all_o our_o labour_n we_o shall_v yet_o be_v to_o seek_v of_o what_o we_o will_v have_v for_o the_o further_a satisfy_v and_o comfort_v of_o the_o conscience_n observe_v we_o thdse_v two_o thing_n first_o that_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o leave_v our_o first_o love_n and_o to_o be_v lukewarm_a neither_o hot_a nor_o cold_a we_o may_v not_o have_v such_o feel_n of_o god_n love_n as_o former_o we_o have_v lukewarmnesse_n difference_n between_o leave_v first_o love_n and_o lukewarmnesse_n and_o this_o may_v provoke_v we_o to_o more_o industry_n to_o recover_v again_o as_o the_o joy_n of_o god_n spirit_n may_v be_v a_o occasion_n by_o reason_n of_o spiritual_a pride_n that_o we_o may_v remit_v of_o our_o zeal_n and_o yet_o we_o may_v still_o be_v resolute_a in_o judgement_n what_o shall_v be_v do_v though_o happy_o in_o our_o practice_n we_o may_v abate_v of_o what_o we_o have_v formr_o do_v 1._o wheretas_n lukewarmnesse_n arise_v from_o a_o perverse_a and_o deceive_v judgement_n that_o we_o be_v rich_a we_o want_v nothing_o and_o therefore_o what_o need_v we_o now_o be_v so_o earnest_a and_o painful_a why_o may_v we_o nor_o abate_v of_o our_o labour_n and_o sit_v down_o and_o lose_v their_o first_o love_n they_o be_v never_o quiet_a till_o they_o have_v recover_v again_o they_o can_v endure_v any_o other_o love_n to_o share_v in_o their_o affection_n oh_o it_o rejoice_v they_o to_o consider_v what_o a_o true_a and_o faithful_a love_n they_o have_v they_o be_v now_o more_o fond_a of_o he_o when_o he_o absent_v himself_o at_o every_o stone_n must_v be_v roll_v all_o corner_n search_v to_o find_v he_o again_o cant._n 5._o and_o they_o give_v not_o over_o till_o they_o have_v recover_v he_o 2._o that_o there_o be_v great_a odds_n between_o leave_v our_o first_o love_n and_o lose_v it_o altogether_o we_o may_v leave_v in_o regard_n of_o a_o former_a measure_n and_o yet_o hold_v a_o true_a gain_n which_o shall_v clear_v we_o of_o lukewarmnesse_n and_o though_o we_o leave_v a_o measure_n yet_o we_o lose_v not_o all_o because_o the_o least_o remain_v will_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o recover_v again_o if_o not_o so_o much_o as_o we_o have_v have_v yet_o so_o much_o as_o shall_v serve_v both_o to_o keep_v from_o final_a apostasy_n and_o further_o to_o eternal_a glory_n 6_o and_o therefore_o here_o be_v matter_n of_o exceed_a consolation_n to_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n not_o to_o trust_v their_o own_o unbelieve_a heart_n much_o less_o satan_n lie_n but_o to_o rest_v on_o the_o faithfulness_n of_o god_n not_o judge_v themselves_o by_o what_o they_o be_v in_o their_o decay_n but_o by_o what_o they_o be_v in_o their_o first_o love_n and_o so_o press_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o faithfulness_n and_o their_o former_a experience_n they_o shall_v be_v uphold_v in_o their_o great_a fail_n by_o a_o secret_a power_n and_o in_o good_a time_n the_o lord_n will_v appear_v unto_o they_o to_o bring_v forth_o their_o righteousness_n as_o the_o light_n and_o their_o
