be_v say_v of_o josias_n that_o he_o turn_v to_o the_o lord_n with_o all_o his_o heart_n and_o with_o all_o his_o soul_n and_o with_o all_o his_o might_n according_a to_o all_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n 2_o king_n 23.25_o these_o and_o such_o like_a privilege_n do_v belong_v to_o he_o who_o be_v engraft_v into_o christ_n and_o by_o these_o he_o may_v encourage_v himself_o in_o his_o call_n and_o stir_v up_o his_o heart_n to_o cheerfulness_n in_o god_n service_n who_o have_v be_v so_o gracious_a unto_o he_o 2._o second_o see_v all_o our_o ability_n of_o keep_v of_o god_n word_n come_v only_o from_o god_n grace_n we_o may_v hence_o learn_v who_o to_o thank_v for_o all_o the_o good_a work_n that_o we_o do_v out_o of_o this_o consideration_n it_o be_v that_o saint_n paul_n have_v if_o any_o of_o we_o be_v more_o fervent_a and_o frequent_a in_o prayer_n than_o other_o be_v and_o more_o strict_a in_o the_o rule_n of_o conscience_n than_o they_o be_v and_o more_o plentiful_a in_o the_o deed_n of_o charity_n he_o shall_v still_o remember_v to_o add_v after_o all_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o i_o that_o do_v this_o but_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o be_v with_o i_o that_o so_o god_n who_o give_v all_o may_v be_v praise_v for_o all_o 3._o see_v all_o our_o ability_n of_o keep_v god_n word_n be_v from_o god_n grace_n we_o shall_v again_o learn_v when_o we_o want_v any_o grace_n whither_o to_o go_v for_o help_n and_o supply_v if_o we_o want_v water_n we_o go_v to_o the_o conduit_n because_o there_o be_v the_o well_o head_n whence_o the_o water_n flow_v and_o if_o we_o want_v health_n we_o go_v to_o the_o physician_n because_o the_o knowledge_n of_o disease_n and_o remedy_n be_v presume_v to_o be_v in_o he_o and_o if_o we_o be_v wrong_v and_o oppress_v we_o go_v go_v by_o his_o prayer_n to_o god_n who_o enlighten_v every_o man_n that_o come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o if_o he_o want_v patience_n to_o bear_v the_o cross_n let_v he_o go_v to_o he_o for_o mercy_n who_o be_v the_o god_n of_o all_o patience_n and_o comfort_n and_o if_o he_o want_v strength_n to_o withstand_v a_o tentation_n let_v he_o go_v to_o he_o who_o suffer_v not_o his_o servant_n law_n be_v available_a to_o happiness_n and_o eternal_a life_n to_o this_o question_n the_o answer_n be_v that_o it_o avail_v or_o conduce_v to_o happiness_n two_o way_n 1._o as_o a_o condition_n qualify_a man_n person_n for_o this_o glorious_a estate_n and_o 2._o as_o a_o service_n which_o god_n reward_v with_o eternal_a glory_n i._n first_o it_o conduce_v as_o a_o condition_n require_v to_o good_n deed_n ill_o place_v and_o so_o they_o be_v when_o they_o be_v bestow_v on_o unworthy_a man_n i_o count_v to_o be_v evil_a not_o good_a work_n and_o therefore_o god_n though_o for_o his_o great_a bounty_n he_o be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o father_n of_o mercy_n and_o the_o god_n of_o consolation_n and_o comfort_n who_o mercy_n be_v over_o all_o his_o work_n yet_o give_v he_o not_o 7_o and_o 8._o verse_n the_o word_n be_v every_o one_o which_o separate_v himself_o from_o i_o and_o set_v up_o his_o idol_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o put_v the_o stumble_a block_n of_o his_o iniquity_n before_o his_o face_n and_o come_v to_o a_o prophet_n to_o inquire_v of_o he_o concern_v i_o i_o the_o lord_n will_v answer_v he_o by_o myself_o and_o i_o will_v set_v my_o face_n against_o that_o man_n and_o will_v make_v he_o a_o sign_n &_o a_o proverb_n etc._n etc._n in_o this_o passage_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n considerable_a 1._o a_o case_n propound_v concern_v the_o people_n and_o 2_o the_o answer_n that_o god_n make_v unto_o it_o the_o case_n be_v this_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o a_o man_n do_v not_o only_o repair_v to_o the_o prophet_n sermon_n in_o public_a but_o beside_o go_v to_o he_o in_o private_a and_o ask_v his_o direction_n in_o point_n of_o religion_n and_o god_n service_n and_o yet_o this_o man_n set_v up_o a_o idol_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o a_o stumble_a block_n before_o his_o face_n that_o be_v he_o have_v some_o one_o thing_n or_o other_o that_o he_o make_v his_o idol_n love_v and_o adore_v it_o &_o look_v towards_o it_o as_o the_o desire_n of_o his_o eye_n more_o than_o he_o love_v or_o adore_v the_o true_a god_n who_o word_n he_o come_v to_o inquire_v after_o this_o be_v the_o case_n now_o the_o answer_n that_o god_n give_v hereunto_o be_v i_o will_v answer_v he_o by_o myself_o i_o will_v set_v my_o face_n against_o he_o etc._n etc._n apply_v we_o this_o to_o our_o time_n &_o it_o be_v thus_o much_o in_o effect_n they_o that_o pretend_v to_o be_v more_o zealous_a &_o religious_a than_o other_o man_n be_v these_o do_v not_o only_o come_v to_o hear_v our_o sermon_n in_o public_a but_o they_o desire_v also_o to_o have_v our_o counsel_n in_o private_a and_o propound_v case_n of_o conscience_n desire_v our_o direction_n therein_o and_o it_o be_v a_o commendable_a course_n and_o a_o ready_a way_n to_o gain_v knowledge_n and_o understanding_n by_o but_o if_o such_o a_o man_n thus_o zealous_a in_o his_o way_n do_v notwithstanding_o set_v up_o a_o idol_n in_o his_o heart_n that_o be_v if_o he_o have_v a_o purpose_n or_o do_v live_v in_o any_o know_a sin_n against_o his_o conscience_n god_n will_v meet_v with_o that_o man_n in_o his_o anger_n and_o cut_v he_o off_o with_o the_o wicked_a that_o never_o inquire_v after_o god_n 3._o ex._n a_o three_o example_n may_v be_v that_o speak_v of_o by_o our_o saviour_n luk._n 13.26_o they_o shall_v say_v unto_o i_o say_v our_o lord_n we_o have_v eat_v and_o drink_v thing_n can_v gain_v they_o a_o title_n to_o heaven_n or_o a_o right_n to_o blessedness_n &_o eternal_a life_n let_v every_o good_a christian_a then_o take_v heed_n that_o himself_o be_v not_o carry_v away_o with_o error_n of_o the_o wicked_a who_o think_v high_o of_o themselves_o for_o their_o hear_n of_o sermon_n and_o read_v of_o scripture_n and_o reason_v of_o religion_n these_o be_v good_a if_o they_o be_v well_o use_v that_o be_v if_o they_o be_v make_v to_o serve_v as_o mean_n of_o piety_n and_o a_o godly_a life_n if_o they_o make_v we_o more_o just_a &_o more_o sober_a and_o more_o peaceable_a and_o more_o charitable_a and_o more_o conscionable_a in_o all_o our_o way_n and_o deal_n then_o they_o be_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n and_o prepare_v man_n by_o holiness_n to_o a_o bless_a life_n but_o if_o they_o be_v separate_v from_o sanctity_n and_o a_o godly_a life_n then_o the_o curse_n attend_v they_o depart_v from_o i_o you_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n and_o go_v you_o curse_v into_o everlasting_a fire_n prepare_v for_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o angel_n from_o which_o god_n will_v deliver_v all_o they_o that_o fear_n and_o serve_v he_o use_v 2._o see_v hearing_n be_v of_o no_o further_a use_n then_o as_o it_o fit_v we_o for_o do_v hence_o we_o have_v a_o good_a rule_n to_o judge_v of_o the_o goodness_n of_o a_o sermon_n by_o for_o if_o hear_v be_v no_o more_o worth_a then_o as_o it_o further_v we_o to_o do_v then_o preach_v be_v of_o as_o little_a worth_n if_o it_o be_v not_o fit_v for_o the_o same_o end_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o preach_v and_o hear_v be_v both_o of_o they_o ordain_v for_o the_o same_o end_n nor_o will_v there_o be_v any_o use_n of_o preach_v if_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o hear_v no_o man_n ever_o preach_v to_o a_o infant_n because_o he_o want_v wit_n to_o learn_v what_o be_v teach_v nor_o will_v any_o man_n ever_o preach_v to_o the_o glorify_a soul_n that_o be_v in_o heaven_n because_o they_o have_v no_o need_n of_o teach_v preach_v only_o be_v for_o this_o purpose_n that_o man_n who_o have_v need_n of_o instruction_n may_v learn_v and_o make_v use_n of_o what_o be_v teach_v and_o therefore_o if_o that_o hear_n be_v vain_a which_o do_v not_o further_a a_o godly_a life_n then_o that_o preach_v be_v no_o better_a than_o babble_a which_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o beget_v godliness_n and_o virtue_n and_o this_o note_n yield_v we_o two_o practical_a rule_n one_o for_o the_o preacher_n and_o a_o other_o for_o the_o hearer_n 1._o rule_n the_o rule_n for_o the_o preacher_n be_v this_o that_o in_o frame_v
