a_o account_n of_o the_o trial_n and_o conviction_n of_o sir_n john_n friend_n for_o high-treason_n in_o conspire_v the_o death_n of_o his_o most_o sacred_a majesty_n king_n william_n and_o the_o subvertion_n of_o the_o government_n etc._n etc._n at_o the_o sessions-house_n in_o the_o old-bailey_n on_o monday_n the_o 23d_o of_o this_o instant_a march_n 1696._o before_o the_o right_n honourable_a the_o lord_n chief_a justice_n holt_n the_o lord_n chief_a justice_n treby_n etc._n etc._n never_o be_v conspiracy_n more_o happy_o and_o more_o full_o discover_v than_o the_o late_a horrid_a design_n for_o the_o barbarous_a assassination_n of_o his_o majesty_n person_n the_o invasion_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o subversion_n of_o the_o government_n and_o consequent_o the_o protestant_n religion_n when_o beside_o the_o number_n and_o withal_o the_o credit_n of_o the_o witness_n we_o have_v the_o public_a confession_n of_o the_o die_a criminal_n themselves_o ex_fw-la ore_fw-la svo_fw-la make_v their_o own_o voluntary_a self_n condemnation_n and_o ever_o justify_v both_o their_o accuser_n and_o their_o own_o execution_n as_o their_o own_o paper_n deliver_v to_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o sheriff_n and_o since_o publish_a by_o authority_n suffitient_o testify_v but_o to_o balance_n the_o case_n between_o the_o three_o unfortunate_a romish_a zealot_n viz._n charnock_n king_n and_o key_n that_o have_v already_o receive_v justice_n and_o the_o present_a criminal_a sir_n john_n friend_n now_o bring_v to_o the_o bar_n of_o justice_n in_o order_n to_o receive_v it_o we_o have_v this_o unhappy_a difference_n between_o they_o that_o of_o the_o two_o this_o unfortunate_a gentleman_n lie_v under_o if_o possible_a the_o much_o more_o heinous_a and_o less_o pity_a circumstance_n for_o though_o there_o can_v be_v no_o apology_n for_o gild_n so_o barbarous_a on_o either_o side_n yet_o certain_o it_o must_v be_v a_o infinite_a aggravation_n of_o the_o crime_n in_o sir_n john_n friend_n profess_v himself_o a_o member_n of_o the_o protestant_a religion_n whereas_o the_o other_o three_o convict_v be_v all_o papist_n and_o consequent_o be_v mislead_v by_o some_o impulse_n of_o blind_a zeal_n a_o bigoted_a superstition_n that_o may_v animate_v this_o conspiracy_n in_o favour_n both_o of_o their_o own_o altar_n and_o their_o darling_n champion_n of_o they_o the_o late_a k._n i_o his_o but_o sir_n john_n friend_n under_o his_o contrary_a capacity_n when_o embark_a in_o the_o same_o black_a cause_n beside_o the_o blot_n in_o their_o scutcheon_n have_v this_o additional_a stain_n in_o he_o viz._n not_o only_o of_o such_o perfidious_a use_v shameful_a treason_n against_o his_o king_n and_o country_n but_o even_o against_o himself_o for_o no_o protestant_n can_v list_v under_o such_o a_o bloody_a banner_n but_o in_o realiiy_n must_v be_v a_o actor_n in_o his_o own_o as_o well_o as_o his_o country_n ruin_n and_o certain_o it_o must_v be_v no_o common_a infatuation_n that_o can_v misguide_v and_o ensnare_v a_o man_n into_o so_o horrid_a and_o likewise_o so_o stupid_a a_o confederacy_n where_o the_o frenzy_n of_o rebellion_n edge_n and_o arm_n the_o draw_v sword_n even_o against_o our_o own_o throat_n and_o if_o there_o can_v be_v degree_n of_o the_o most_o capital_a sin_n it_o lie_v a_o a_o little_a more_o heavy_a upon_o this_o unfortunate_a offender_n who_o with_o that_o mass_n of_o wealth_n and_o those_o smile_n of_o fortune_n shall_v nevertheless_o debase_v himself_o to_o the_o engage_v in_o so_o wicked_a a_o cause_n when_o profligate_n live_v and_o desperate_a fortune_n one_o will_v think_v shall_v only_o be_v tempt_v to_o fish_n in_o trouble_a water_n it_o have_v be_v remark_v that_o never_o be_v more_o generous_a and_o those_o repeat_v tender_v of_o mercy_n offer_v than_o to_o sir_n john_n friend_n from_o the_o king_n be_v own_o mouth_n upon_o his_o examination_n before_o the_o council_n but_o his_o obstinacy_n and_o harden_a denial_n of_o his_o offence_n and_o some_o other_o ill_a ascendant_n over_o make_v he_o reject_v the_o royal_a clemency_n till_o too_o late_a to_o be_v recall_v which_o have_v bring_v he_o to_o this_o deplorabel_n scene_n be_v bring_v upon_o his_o trial_n on_o monday_n the_o 23d_o of_o this_o instant_a march_n after_o ten_o in_o the_o morning_n which_o continue_v till_o two_o in_o the_o afternoon_n the_o great_a stress_n of_o the_o testimony_n against_o he_o beside_o his_o general_n assistance_n in_o the_o conspiracy_n be_v his_o acceptance_n of_o a_o colonel_n commission_n for_o raise_v a_o regiment_n of_o horse_n it_o be_v prove_v by_o capt._n porter_n and_o mr._n blair_n that_o he_o have_v choose_v all_o his_o captain_n who_o be_v all_o mention_v and_o have_v meet_v they_o at_o several_a tavern_n and_o elsewhere_o in_o this_o city_n and_o have_v pay_v several_a sum_n of_o money_n for_o carry_v on_o the_o cause_n the_o evidence_n be_v full_a and_o plain_a against_o he_o beside_o one_o of_o hi●_n own_o letter_n be_v produce_v to_o confirm_v their_o testimoy_n he_o endeavour_v to_o invalidate_v the_o credit_n of_o the_o witness_n as_o be_v papist_n but_o that_o be_v overrule_v in_o short_a after_o a_o long_a trial_n and_o full_a hear_v the_o jury_n go_v out_o and_o soon_o return_v bring_v he_o in_o guilty_a the_o court_n
