thursday_n last_o i_o give_v your_o lordship_n a_o brief_a account_n of_o our_o condition_n i_o shall_v take_v leave_n now_o to_o trouble_v your_o lordship_n with_o a_o more_o particular_a representation_n of_o our_o proceed_n on_o tuesday_n morning_n 29_o august_n the_o fleet_n with_o i_o proceed_v down_o as_o low_a as_o the_o shoe_n where_o the_o tide_n of_o flood_n come_v in_o we_o anchor_v in_o the_o forenoon_n of_o the_o same_o day_n we_o discover_v a_o great_a fleet_n of_o ship_n come_v up_o into_o the_o river_n and_o by_o a_o signal_n from_o the_o adventure_n frigate_n send_v out_o the_o 28_o for_o advice_n we_o find_v they_o to_o be_v the_o revolt_a ship_n at_o their_o come_n near_o we_o see_v their_o three_o flag_n and_o make_v they_o to_o be_v small_a and_o great_a at_o least_o twenty_o in_o number_n we_o have_v by_o this_o time_n a_o very_a great_a experiment_n of_o the_o mariner_n affection_n those_o aboard_o my_o ship_n apply_v themselves_o to_o a_o preparation_n for_o fight_v with_o the_o great_a alacrity_n that_o ever_o i_o see_v there_o be_v not_o one_o of_o they_o that_o discover_v the_o least_o averseness_n to_o engage_v or_o unwillingness_n to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o the_o enemy_n reduction_n which_o as_o the_o captians_n inform_v i_o be_v likewise_o the_o general_a temper_n of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o fleet_n and_o true_o the_o special_a influence_n of_o god_n upon_o their_o spirit_n be_v visible_a to_o admiration_n and_o which_o i_o value_v as_o no_o small_a privilege_n and_o honour_n to_o this_o undertake_n their_o eye_n heart_n and_o prayer_n be_v so_o advance_v to_o heaven_n as_o the_o place_n only_o from_o whence_o they_o expect_v their_o help_n that_o it_o be_v a_o great_a engagement_n to_o our_o faith_n that_o god_n will_v manifest_v and_o engage_v his_o sp●cial_a presence_n and_o power_n among_o we_o and_o for_o we_o in_o the_o issue_n of_o this_o service_n the_o place_n where_o we_o that_o day_n anchor_v be_v full_a of_o sand_n and_o the_o channel_n narrow_a therefore_o about_o noon_n we_o begin_v to_o ply_v up_o towards_o the_o buoy_z of_o the_o oze-edge_n endeavour_v to_o keep_v the_o advantage_n that_o god_n have_v give_v we_o of_o be_v to_o the_o windward_n of_o the_o enemy_n that_o night_n we_o anchor_a off_o the_o buoy_z of_o the_o oze-edge_n and_o the_o enemy_n at_o about_o a_o league_n distance_n from_o we_o the_o prince_n send_v i_o a_o summons_n by_o mr._n henry_n seymour_n about_o eight_o of_o the_o clock_n which_o i_o receive_v and_o answer_v as_o i_o give_v account_n in_o my_o last_o to_o your_o lordship_n wherein_o of_o the_o summons_n and_o of_o my_o answer_n i_o enclose_v a_o copy_n the_o same_o tuesday_n night_n i_o consult_v with_o a_o council_n of_o war_n where_o we_o determine_v how_o to_o manage_v the_o next_o day_n action_n the_o sum_n of_o our_o resolution_n be_v that_o every_o ship_n shall_v weigh_v and_o be_v loose_a at_o the_o windward_n tide_n and_o get_v and_o keep_v the_o wind_n of_o the_o enemy_n if_o possible_a and_o assist_v each_o other_o to_o the_o best_a advantage_n if_o engage_v but_o not_o on_o that_o day_n to_o begin_v the_o engagement_n on_o our_o part_n we_o be_v every_o hour_n in_o expectation_n of_o the_o portsmouth_n ship_n and_o the_o channel_n where_o god_n providence_n have_v cast_v we_o be_v so_o narrow_a that_o in_o case_n of_o engagement_n some_o of_o the_o ship_n will_v have_v be_v necessary_o force_v upon_o the_o sand_n and_o so_o destroy_v which_o inconvenience_n we_o consider_v may_v be_v prevent_v by_o the_o portsmouth_n ship_n fall_v upon_o the_o rear_n while_o we_o fall_v upon_o the_o van_n of_o the_o enemy_n fleet_n yet_o withal_o to_o keep_v our_o ground_n about_o the_o oze-edge_n be_v a_o place_n of_o more_o advantage_n than_o many_o other_o thereabouts_o that_o night_n and_o the_o next_o day_n viz._n the_o 30_o of_o aug._n till_o about_o noon_n all_o be_v quiet_a the_o mariner_n retain_v their_o former_a spirit_n of_o courage_n unanimity_n and_o resolution_n and_o then_o the_o tide_n of_o flood_n come_v on_o the_o enemy_n weigh_v i_o also_o weigh_v with_o the_o fleet_n under_o my_o command_n which_o ply_v up_o and_o down_o some_o hour_n according_a to_o the_o resolution_n of_o the_o council_n of_o war_n maintain_v the_o advantage_n of_o be_v to_o the_o windward_n of_o the_o enemy_n and_o expect_v without_o scruple_n a_o sudden_a engagement_n the_o weather_n also_o be_v fair_a and_o a_o calm_a expect_v rather_o than_o otherwise_o but_o about_o four_o in_o the_o afternoon_n there_o fall_v so_o great_a a_o gale_n of_o wind_n amount_v to_o no_o less_o than_o a_o storm_n that_o the_o admiral_n of_o the_o revolt_a ship_n with_o his_o whole_a fleet_n be_v force_v to_o come_v to_o anchor_n and_o so_o be_v we_o there_o be_v no_o action_n the_o remainder_n of_o that_o afternoon_n nor_o the_o night_n follow_v during_o which_o the_o admiral_n of_o the_o two_o fleet_n ride_v about_o a_o league_n each_o from_o other_o that_o day_n i_o send_v forth_o a_o vessel_n to_o inquire_v after_o the_o portsmouth_n fleet._n on_o thursday_n morning_n 31_o aug._n i_o call_v a_o council_n of_o war_n and_o than_o it_o be_v again_o consider_v that_o the_o portsmouth_n fleet_n be_v not_o yet_o come_v in_o nor_o hear_v of_o that_o some_o ship_n of_o this_o fleet_n special_o the_o great_a one_o will_v in_o all_o probability_n be_v force_v on_o the_o sand_n if_o we_o shall_v here_o engage_v which_o will_v also_o produce_v the_o like_a effect_n as_o to_o some_o of_o the_o revolt_a ship_n whereby_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o navy_n will_v be_v much_o impair_v that_o a_o few_o hour_n expectance_n may_v bring_v in_o the_o portsmouth_n fleet_n whereby_o we_o may_v not_o only_o proportion_v the_o enemy_n strength_n but_o also_o by_o god_n blessing_n disable_v their_o return_n we_o consider_v withal_o that_o on_o the_o miscarriage_n of_o this_o fleet_n depend_v the_o miscarriage_n of_o the_o portsmouth_n fleet_n and_o the_o put_n of_o very_o high_a advantage_n into_o the_o enemy_n hand_n further_o to_o prejudice_v the_o trade_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o to_o make_v their_o strength_n at_o sea_n much_o more_o considerable_a upon_o which_o and_o some_o other_o ground_n then_o offer_v it_o be_v among_o other_o thing_n unanimous_o resolve_v upon_o the_o question_n by_o myself_o the_o commissioner_n of_o parliament_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o council_n of_o war_n consist_v of_o twelve_o in_o number_n not_o one_o voice_n contradict_v it_o that_o the_o ship_n of_o this_o fleet_n shall_v observe_v the_o enemy_n motion_n and_o if_o he_o ply_v up_o then_o to_o ply_v up_o before_o he_o keeping_z as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v to_o the_o windward_n and_o decline_v at_o present_a a_o engagement_n unless_o it_o shall_v be_v unavoidable_a and_o that_o in_o case_n the_o enemy_n shall_v weigh_v and_o fall_v downward_o this_o fleet_n shall_v follow_v they_o yet_o at_o such_o a_o distance_n that_o there_o may_v be_v room_n enough_o with_o conveniency_n to_o anchor_n and_o to_o succour_v the_o portsmouth_n fleet_n in_o case_n they_o shall_v be_v in_o sight_n and_o so_o we_o prepare_v ourselves_o in_o expectation_n of_o a_o engagement_n that_o afternoon_n but_o by_o the_o time_n that_o these_o and_o some_o other_o resolution_n of_o the_o council_n of_o war_n be_v digest_v and_o ready_a to_o be_v sign_v the_o viceadmiral_n of_o the_o revolt_a ship_n do_v about_o ten_o in_o the_o forenoon_n weigh_v and_o short_o after_o so_o do_v the_o rest_n and_o forthwith_o their_o whole_a fleet_n stow_v away_o i_o do_v thereupon_o give_v order_n to_o the_o fleet_n with_o i_o to_o weigh_v and_o as_o soon_o as_o my_o letter_n to_o your_o lordship_n of_o that_o day_n be_v dispatch_v we_o give_v they_o chase_n some_o of_o our_o ship_n keep_v at_o a_o small_a distance_n of_o which_o the_o adventure_n frigate_n espy_v a_o fleet_n a_o head_n of_o the_o enemy_n shoot_v a_o gun_n in_o token_n they_o be_v the_o portsmouth_n ship_n whereupon_o i_o make_v all_o the_o sail_n i_o can_v to_o the_o end_n this_o fleet_n conjunction_n with_o the_o portsmouth_n ship_n may_v be_v improve_v to_o the_o more_o effectual_a engage_v of_o the_o enemy_n though_o the_o fleet_n suppose_v by_o captain_n ball_n to_o be_v from_o portsmouth_n prove_v other_o ship_n afterward_o night_n be_v come_v and_o the_o pilot_n conceive_v it_o dangerous_a further_o to_o proceed_v so_o near_o the_o sand_n i_o anchor_v near_o the_o middle_n of_o the_o gunfleet_n about_o a_o league_n and_o a_o half_a short_a of_o the_o enemy_n who_o by_o shoot_v off_o a_o gun_n and_o hale_v up_o their_o sail_n give_v cause_n of_o confidence_n that_o they_o be_v also_o come_v to_o anchor_n purpose_v to_o weigh_v early_o next_o morning_n to_o pursue_v they_o and_o appoint_v some_o ship_n of_o this_o fleet_n to_o lie_v near_o to_o observe_v their_o motion_n the_o next_o morning_n the_o first_o of_o septemb_n we_o find_v that_o the_o revolter_n have_v withdraw_v themselves_o in_o the_o night_n and_o about_o six_o of_o the_o clock_n we_o discover_v the_o portsmouth_n ship_n conceive_v to_o be_v those_o by_o the_o many_o gun_n that_o pass_v by_o way_n of_o salute_n as_o be_v interpret_v betwixt_o they_o and_o some_o of_o this_o fleet_n that_o go_v up_o to_o they_o whereupon_o i_o give_v order_n to_o weigh_v but_o the_o wind_n grow_v so_o high_a that_o the_o pilot_n deliver_v his_o opinion_n this_o ship_n will_v not_o in_o such_o weather_n be_v able_a to_o sail_v without_o danger_n of_o side_v upon_o gunfleet_n sands_n whereupon_o we_o remain_v there_o at_o anchor_n all_o that_o day_n the_o wind_n continue_v to_o night_n very_o high_a this_o day_n be_v the_o second_o of_o september_n we_o weigh_v from_o the_o middle_n of_o gunfleet_n and_o about_o ten_o in_o the_o forenoon_n meet_v with_o all_o the_o portsmouth_n fleet_n other_o than_o some_o of_o the_o small_a vessel_n that_o retire_v into_o harwich_n for_o shelter_v against_o the_o yesterday_n storm_n and_o so_o we_o proceed_v together_o to_o albrough_n ride_v to_o inquire_v after_o the_o revolt_a fleet_n where_o anchor_a i_o speak_v with_o the_o captain_n that_o come_v from_o portsmouth_n who_o represent_v their_o several_a company_n to_o be_v as_o cordial_a and_o resolute_a for_o the_o enemy_n reduction_n as_o can_v be_v desire_v since_o my_o come_n hither_o i_o have_v endeavour_v to_o inform_v myself_o which_o way_n the_o revolter_n be_v go_v and_o find_v it_o most_o probable_a that_o they_o be_v retire_v to_o goree_n there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o intimation_n in_o these_o part_n that_o they_o be_v go_v northwards_o therefore_o i_o shall_v god_n
