before_o god_n to_o ask_v and_o find_v grace_n in_o time_n convenient_a again_o what_o a_o verity_n and_o constant_a truth_n in_o god_n be_v this_o that_o he_o will_v according_a to_o his_o promise_n our_o sin_n let_v we_o second_o get_v we_o god_n law_n as_o a_o glass_n to_o look_v in_o and_o that_o not_o only_o literal_o outward_o or_o partly_o but_o also_o spiritual_o inward_o and_o thorough_o let_v we_o consider_v the_o heart_n and_o so_o shall_v we_o see_v the_o foul_a spot_n we_o be_v stain_v withal_o at_o least_o inward_o whereby_o we_o the_o rather_o may_v be_v move_v to_o hearty_a sorrow_n and_o sigh_v for_o as_o s._n austin_n say_v it_o be_v a_o glass_n which_o fear_v no_o body_n but_o even_o look_v what_o a_o one_o thou_o be_v so_o it_o paint_v thou_o out_o in_o the_o law_n in_o his_o holy_a word_n in_o god_n law_n we_o see_v it_o be_v a_o foul_a spot_n to_o our_o soul_n not_o only_o to_o be_v a_o open_a profaner_n of_o the_o sabbath_n day_n but_o also_o not_o to_o rest_v from_o our_o own_o word_n and_o work_n that_o the_o lord_n may_v both_o speak_v and_o work_v in_o we_o and_o by_o we_o not_o to_o hear_v his_o holy_a word_n not_o to_o communicate_v his_o sacrament_n not_o to_o give_v occasion_n to_o other_o to_o holiness_n by_o our_o example_n in_o godly_a work_n and_o reverend_a esteem_v of_o the_o ministry_n of_o his_o word_n in_o god_n law_n we_o see_v it_o a_o foul_a spot_n to_o our_o soul_n not_o only_o to_o be_v a_o open_a disobeyer_n of_o our_o parent_n magistrate_n master_n and_o such_o as_o be_v in_o any_o authority_n over_o we_o but_o also_o not_o to_o honour_v such_o even_a in_o our_o heart_n not_o to_o give_v thanks_n to_o god_n for_o they_o not_o to_o pray_v for_o they_o to_o aid_v to_o help_v or_o relive_v they_o to_o bear_v with_o their_o infirmity_n etc._n etc._n in_o god_n law_n we_o see_v it_o be_v a_o foul_a spot_n in_o our_o soul_n not_o only_o to_o be_v a_o manqueller_n in_o hatred_n malice_n proud_a look_n brag_n in_o unclean_a and_o wanton_a talk_n in_o actual_a do_n unhonest_o with_o our_o neighbour_n wife_n daughter_n servant_n etc._n etc._n but_o also_o not_o to_o be_v chaste_a sober_a temperate_a in_o heart_n look_n tongue_n apparel_n deed_n and_o to_o help_v other_o thereunto_o according_o etc._n etc._n in_o god_n law_n we_o see_v it_o be_v a_o foul_a spot_n to_o our_o soul_n not_o only_o in_o heart_n to_o covet_v in_o look_n or_o word_n to_o flatter_v lie_v colour_n etc._n etc._n in_o deed_n to_o take_v away_o any_o thing_n which_o pertain_v to_o another_o but_o also_o in_o heart_n countenance_n word_n and_o deed_n not_o to_o keep_v save_v and_o defend_v that_o which_o pertain_v to_o thy_o neighbour_n as_o thou_o will_v thy_o own_o in_o god_n law_n we_o may_v see_v it_o a_o foul_a spot_n not_o only_o to_o lie_v and_o bear_v false_a witness_n against_o any_o man_n but_o also_o not_o to_o have_v as_o great_a a_o care_n over_o thy_o neighbour_n name_n as_o over_o thy_o own_o sin_n in_o god_n law_n it_o be_v we_o may_v see_v and_o a_o foul_a spot_n not_o only_o to_o consent_v to_o evil_a lust_n or_o carnal_a desire_n but_o even_o the_o very_a natural_a or_o carnal_a lust_n and_o desire_v themselves_o for_o so_o i_o may_v call_v they_o nature_n itself_o be_v now_o so_o corrupt_v be_v sin_n and_o self-love_n and_o many_o such_o like_a by_o reason_n whereof_o i_o think_v there_o be_v none_o that_o look_v well_o therein_o but_o though_o he_o be_v blameless_a to_o the_o world_n &_o fair_a to_o the_o show_n yet_o certain_o inward_o his_o face_n be_v foul_a least_o for_o the_o most_o part_n of_o it_o for_o the_o last_o summer_n as_o i_o be_v abroad_o preach_v in_o the_o country_n my_o chance_n be_v to_o make_v a_o sermon_n of_o repentance_n the_o which_o be_v earnest_o of_o diverse_a desire_a of_o i_o that_o i_o shall_v give_v it_o they_o write_v or_o else_o put_v it_o forth_o in_o print_n which_o i_o can_v not_o do_v for_o i_o have_v not_o write_v it_o and_o so_o i_o tell_v they_o but_o when_o no_o nay_o will_v serve_v i_o promise_v to_o write_v it_o as_o i_o can_v at_o my_o leisure_n this_o leisure_n i_o prolong_v so_o long_o that_o as_o i_o think_v i_o offend_v they_o so_o do_v i_o please_v myself_o as_o one_o more_o glad_a to_o read_v other_o man_n writing_n then_o in_o such_o sort_n to_o publish_v my_o own_o for_o other_o man_n to_o read_v not_o that_o i_o will_v other_o not_o to_o profit_v by_o i_o but_o that_o i_o know_v how_o slender_a my_o store_n be_v will_v be_v loath_a the_o enemy_n shall_v thereby_o take_v occasion_n of_o speak_v but_o when_o i_o consider_v this_o present_a time_n to_o occasion_n man_n now_o to_o look_v upon_o all_o thing_n in_o such_o sort_n as_o may_v move_v they_o to_o godliness_n rather_o than_o to_o any_o curious_a question_n i_o for_o the_o satisfy_n of_o my_o promise_n and_o profit_v of_o the_o simple_a ignorant_a and_o rude_a have_v now_o cause_v this_o sermon_n to_o be_v print_v the_o wish_v the_o felicity_n of_o speedy_a and_o full_a conversion_n to_o the_o lord_n godly_a learned_a man_n do_v write_v &_o publish_v book_n to_o profit_v the_o age_n in_o which_o they_o live_v and_o the_o posterity_n this_o desire_n be_v in_o the_o author_n of_o this_o treatise_n m._n john_n bradford_n who_o preach_v &_o publish_v this_o sermon_n of_o repentance_n and_o now_o that_o we_o which_o trust_v of_o pardon_n through_o christ_n which_o be_v not_o without_o a_o earnest_a purpose_n to_o amend_v or_o a_o new_a life_n this_o penance_n be_v the_o thing_n whereto_o all_o the_o scripture_n call_v us._n this_o penance_n do_v i_o now_o call_v you_o all_o unto_o this_o must_v be_v continual_o in_o we_o and_o not_o for_o a_o lend_a season_n as_o we_o have_v think_v this_o must_v increase_v daily_o more_o and_o more_o in_o we_o without_o this_o we_o can_v be_v save_v search_v therefore_o your_o heart_n all_o all_o swearer_n blasphemer_n liar_n flatterer_n lewd_a or_o idle_a talker_n jester_n briber_n covetous_a person_n drunkard_n glutton_n whoremonger_n thief_n murderer_n slanderer_n idle_a liver_n negligent_a in_o their_o vocation_n etc._n etc._n all_o such_o and_o all_o other_o as_o lament_v not_o their_o sin_n as_o hope_v not_o in_o god_n mercy_n for_o pardon_n and_o purpose_v not_o hearty_o to_o amend_v to_o leave_v their_o swear_n drunkenness_n whoredom_n covetousness_n idleness_n etc._n etc._n all_o such_o i_o say_v shall_v not_o or_o can_v enter_v into_o god_n kingdom_n but_o hell_n fire_n be_v prepare_v for_o they_o weep_v and_o gnash_v of_o tooth_n whereunto_o alas_o i_o fear_v i_o very_o many_o will_v needs_o go_v in_o that_o very_o many_o will_v be_v as_o they_o have_v be_v let_v we_o even_o to_o the_o wear_n of_o our_o tongue_n to_o the_o stump_n preach_v and_o pray_v never_o so_o much_o to_o the_o contrary_a and_o that_o even_o in_o the_o bowel_n of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o now_o i_o beseech_v you_o all_o all_o and_o every_o mother_n child_n to_o repent_v and_o lament_v your_o sin_n to_o trust_v in_o god_n mercy_n and_o to_o amend_v your_o life_n now_o i_o think_v you_o be_v somewhat_o astonish_v whereby_o i_o gather_v that_o present_o you_o desire_v this_o repentance_n that_o be_v this_o sorrow_n good_a hope_n and_o newness_n of_o life_n the_o which_o that_o you_o may_v the_o rather_o attain_v and_o get_v to_o your_o comfort_n as_o i_o have_v go_v about_o to_o be_v a_o mean_a to_o stir_v up_o in_o you_o by_o god_n grace_n this_o desire_n of_o repentance_n so_o through_o the_o same_o grace_n of_o god_n will_v i_o go_v about_o now_o to_o show_v you_o how_o you_o may_v have_v your_o desire_n in_o this_o hehalfe_n and_o first_o concern_v this_o part_n namely_o sorrow_n for_o our_o sin_n and_o hearty_a lament_v of_o the_o same_o for_o this_o if_o you_o desire_v the_o have_v of_o it_o you_o must_v beware_v that_o you_o think_v not_o that_o of_o yourselves_o or_o of_o your_o own_o free_a will_n by_o any_o without_o which_o knowledge_n there_o can_v be_v no_o sorrow_n for_o how_o can_v a_o man_n sorrow_n for_o his_o sin_n which_o know_v not_o his_o sin_n as_o when_o a_o man_n be_v sick_a the_o first_o step_n to_o health_n be_v to_o know_v his_o sickness_n even_o so_o to_o salvation_n the_o first_o step_n be_v to_o know_v thy_o damnation_n due_a for_o thy_o many_o sin_n the_o law_n of_o god_n therefore_o must_v be_v get_v and_o careful_o look_v in_o we_o must_v look_v in_o it_o spiritual_o and_o not_o corporal_o or_o carnal_o as_o the_o outward_a word_n or_o letter_n do_v declare_v and_o utter_v and_o so_o our_o saviour_n teach_v we_o in_o matthew_n expound_v the_o sixth_o and_o seven_o commandment_n not_o only_o after_o the_o outward_a deed_n but_o also_o after_o the_o heart_n make_v there_o the_o anger_n of_o the_o heart_n a_o kind_n of_o murder_n lust_a after_o another_o man_n wife_n a_o kind_n of_o adultery_n and_o this_o be_v one_o of_o the_o difference_n between_o god_n law_n and_o man_n law_n that_o of_o this_o man_n law_n i_o mean_v i_o be_o not_o contemnable_a so_o long_o as_o i_o observe_v outward_o the_o same_o but_o god_n law_n go_v to_o the_o root_n and_o to_o the_o heart_n condemn_v i_o for_o the_o inward_a motion_n although_o outward_o i_o live_v most_o holy_o as_o for_o example_n if_o i_o kill_v no_o man_n though_o in_o my_o heart_n i_o hate_v man_n law_n condemn_v i_o not_o but_o otherwise_o do_v god_n law_n and_o why_o for_o it_o see_v the_o root_n whence_o the_o evil_a do_v spring_n if_o hatred_n be_v take_v out_o of_o the_o heart_n than_o loftiness_n in_o look_n detraction_n in_o tongue_n and_o murder_n by_o hand_n can_v never_o ensue_v if_o lust_a be_v out_o of_o the_o heart_n curiosity_n in_o countenance_n wantonness_n in_o word_n loathsome_a boldness_n in_o body_n will_v not_o appear_v in_o that_o therefore_o this_o outward_a evil_n spring_v out_o of_o the_o inward_a corruption_n see_v god_n law_n also_o be_v a_o law_n of_o liberty_n as_o say_v saint_n james_n 7._o jam._n 2._o rom._n 7._o and_o spiritual_a as_o say_v saint_n paul_n perfect_o and_o spiritual_o it_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v if_o we_o will_v true_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o sin_n for_o of_o this_o inward_a corruption_n reason_n know_v little_a or_o nothing_o i_o have_v not_o know_v say_v paul_n that_o lust_a which_o to_o reason_n and_o to_o they_o which_o be_v guide_v only_o by_o reason_n be_v think_v but_o a_o trifle_n i_o have_v not_o know_v say_v he_o this_o lust_a to_o have_v be_v sin_n if_o the_o law_n have_v not_o say_v his_o soul_n to_o hell_n and_o have_v we_o any_o pre-eminence_n that_o god_n will_v do_v nothing_o to_o us._n achans_n subtle_a theft_n provoke_v god_n anger_n against_o all_o israel_n and_o our_o subtlety_n yea_o open_a extortion_n be_v so_o fine_a and_o politic_a that_o we_o think_v god_n can_v espy_v it_o gehezi_n his_o covetousness_n bring_v it_o not_o the_o leprosy_n upon_o he_o and_o on_o all_o his_o seed_n judas_n also_o hang_v himself_o but_o the_o covetousness_n of_o england_n be_v of_o a_o other_o cloth_n and_o colour_n well_o if_o it_o be_v so_o the_o same_o tailor_n will_v cut_v it_o according_o anania_n and_o saphira_n by_o lie_v link_v to_o they_o sudden_a death_n but_o we_o now_o prolong_v our_o life_n the_o long_o to_o last_v in_o eternal_a death_n the_o false_a witness_n of_o the_o two_o judge_n against_o susanna_n light_v on_o their_o own_fw-mi head_n and_o so_o will_v we_o do_v at_o length_n but_o what_o go_v i_o about_o to_o avouch_v ancient_a example_n where_o daily_a experience_n do_v teach_v the_o sweat_v the_o other_o year_n the_o storm_n the_o winter_n follow_v will_v we_o to_o weigh_v they_o in_o the_o same_o balance_n man_n hang_v and_o kill_v themselves_o which_o be_v alas_o too_o rife_o in_o all_o place_n require_v we_o to_o register_v they_o in_o the_o same_o roll_n at_o the_o least_o in_o child_n infant_n and_o such_o like_a which_o
