which_o else_o the_o best_a nature_n in_o the_o world_n can_v never_o attain_v unto_o the_o three_o rule_n to_o be_v know_v and_o practise_v of_o he_o who_o will_v true_o search_v himself_o be_v that_o every_o man_n bear_v of_o adam_n be_v by_o nature_n the_o child_n of_o wrath_n and_o god_n enemy_n this_o be_v true_a of_o all_o without_o exception_n high_a or_o low_o rich_a or_o poor_a noble_a or_o simple_a bear_v in_o the_o visible_a church_n or_o without_o and_o further_o by_o be_v enemy_n of_o god_n he_o be_v therefore_o bear_v subject_a to_o hell_n to_o damnation_n and_o to_o all_o other_o curse_n so_o that_o look_v as_o a_o traitor_n convict_v stand_v thereby_o in_o his_o prince_n high_a displeasure_n and_o be_v sure_a of_o death_n without_o special_a pardon_n so_o stand_v every_o man_n when_o he_o be_v bear_v convict_v of_o high_a treason_n against_o god_n in_o his_o high_a disfavour_v and_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o hell_n which_o be_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n thus_o david_n confess_v of_o himself_o i_o be_v bear_v in_o iniquity_n and_o in_o sin_n have_v my_o mother_n conceive_v i_o if_o in_o sin_n then_o in_o god_n wrath_n and_o under_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o forsake_v sin_n it_o be_v therefore_o manifest_a that_o they_o have_v not_o yet_o begin_v to_o believe_v or_o repent_v nor_o have_v enter_v into_o the_o first_o step_n in_o the_o second_o place_n observe_v better_o the_o signification_n of_o the_o word_n it_o signify_v to_o search_v narrowe_o as_o a_o man_n will_v do_v for_o a_o piece_n of_o gold_n or_o a_o precious_a jewel_n which_o be_v lose_v in_o a_o great_a house_n or_o as_o a_o man_n may_v search_v for_o gold_n in_o a_o mine_n of_o the_o earth_n where_o be_v much_o earth_n and_o but_o very_o little_a gold_n oar_n here_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o in_o true_a repentance_n and_o conversion_n we_o must_v not_o search_v so_o only_o as_o to_o find_v the_o gross_a and_o palpable_a sin_n of_o our_o life_n but_o so_o as_o we_o may_v find_v those_o sin_n which_o the_o world_n account_v lesser_a sin_n and_o espy_v our_o secret_a sault_n &_o privy_a corruption_n some_o corruption_n seem_v more_o near_o a_o kin_n of_o our_o nature_n &_o therein_o man_n hope_v to_o be_v excuse_v when_o they_o forsake_v many_o other_o great_a sin_n but_o a_o true_a penitent_a sinner_n must_v search_v for_o such_o so_o as_o a_o good_a magistrate_n search_v for_o a_o lurk_a traitor_n which_o be_v convey_v into_o some_o close_a and_o secret_a corner_n and_o he_o must_v ransack_v his_o heart_n for_o such_o corruption_n as_o wherein_o his_o heart_n take_v special_a delight_n and_o must_v think_v that_o no_o sin_n can_v be_v so_o small_a but_o it_o be_v too_o great_a to_o be_v spare_v and_o that_o every_o sin_n great_a or_o little_a must_v be_v search_v for_o as_o be_v all_o traitor_n to_o god_n majesty_n but_o alas_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o world_n be_v far_o otherwise_o great_a sin_n be_v little_a sin_n little_a sin_n be_v no_o sin_n nay_o after_o a_o little_a custom_n great_a sin_n be_v so_o little_a or_o nothing_o and_o so_o at_o last_o man_n make_v no_o bone_n of_o gross_a and_o grievous_a sin_n and_o for_o the_o most_o part_n man_n search_v so_o superficiallie_o that_o they_o scarce_o find_v any_o thing_n to_o be_v sin_n such_o excuse_n be_v make_v such_o distinction_n be_v preacher_n abuse_v of_o parent_n no_o sin_n pride_n in_o apparel_n superfluity_n in_o meat_n beastly_a &_o ordinary_a drunkenness_n fornication_n no_o sin_n nay_o deceit_n cosonage_n oppress_v usury_n notorious_a bribery_n and_o covetousness_n that_o mother_n sin_n these_o be_v count_v no_o sin_n these_o beam_n be_v make_v but_o moat_n by_o profane_a man_n &_o they_o be_v so_o mince_v and_o carve_v or_o there_o be_v some_o such_o necessity_n of_o they_o or_o some_o such_o other_o flourish_n or_o varnish_n must_v be_v cast_v upon_o they_o as_o that_o they_o be_v little_a or_o none_o at_o all_o alas_o alas_o be_v not_o that_o a_o simple_a and_o a_o silly_a search_n where_o such_o block_n as_o these_o be_v lie_v unespy_v what_o be_v moul-hille_n when_o such_o mountain_n be_v not_o see_v moat_n will_v be_v little_o regard_v where_o such_o beam_n be_v not_o discern_v but_o it_o be_v clear_a that_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o true_a trial_n nor_o diligent_a search_n make_v for_o a_o true_a convert_n will_v search_v his_o hart_n for_o all_o and_o will_v spare_v none_o he_o deal_v in_o search_v his_o own_o heart_n as_o a_o good_a justice_n of_o peace_n in_o search_v for_o traitor_n or_o seminary_n priest_n he_o seek_v not_o superficial_o but_o most_o exact_o &_o leave_v never_o a_o corner_n unsought_a and_o he_o think_v great_a sin_n to_o be_v infinite_a and_o little_a sin_n great_a and_o judge_v no_o sin_n so_o small_a but_o that_o it_o deserve_v the_o anger_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o he_o wonder_v at_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n which_o throw_v we_o not_o all_o down_o to_o hell_n in_o a_o moment_n and_o he_o cry_v out_o with_o holy_a jeremie_n it_o be_v the_o lord_n mercy_n that_o we_o be_v not_o consume_v away_o then_o with_o this_o superficial_a and_o hypocritical_a search_n where_o so_o many_o sin_n be_v spare_v and_o not_o find_v out_o it_o be_v pharisaical_a for_o even_o so_o the_o pharisie_n when_o he_o come_v into_o the_o temple_n to_o reckon_v with_o god_n and_o to_o tell_v what_o traitor_n he_o have_v find_v that_o be_v what_o sin_n upon_o good_a search_n he_o have_v espy_v he_o return_v his_o precept_n all_o be_v well_o he_o have_v find_v never_o a_o one_o but_o begin_v to_o thank_v god_n that_o he_o be_v so_o good_a &_o so_o good_a and_o not_o so_o ill_a and_o so_o ill_a nor_o yet_o like_o the_o publican_n the_o world_n be_v full_a of_o pharisy_n not_o only_o the_o popish_a church_n but_o even_o our_o church_n swarm_n with_o these_o superficial_a search_n who_o can_v because_o they_o will_v not_o find_v any_o sin_n to_o present_v unto_o god_n man_n think_v in_o the_o country_n a_o church_n officer_n hazard_v his_o oath_n if_o he_o present_v all_o well_o and_o find_v no_o fault_n in_o his_o parish_n to_o present_a as_o punishable_a to_o the_o ordinary_a for_o man_n think_v it_o unpossible_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v none_o in_o a_o whole_a parish_n then_o how_o do_v that_o man_n hazard_v his_o own_o soul_n who_o be_v make_v overseer_n &_o searcher_n of_o his_o heart_n find_v nothing_o in_o it_o to_o present_v to_o the_o lord_n for_o it_o be_v no_o more_o easy_a to_o espy_v outward_a and_o actual_a transgression_n in_o a_o whole_a parish_n than_o it_o be_v to_o find_v a_o heap_n of_o corruption_n in_o a_o man_n heart_n if_o a_o man_n will_v search_v into_o the_o bottom_n of_o it_o with_o the_o light_n of_o god_n law_n therefore_o when_o the_o lord_n come_v and_o keep_v his_o visitation_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o such_o a_o man_n but_o to_o undergo_v the_o strict_a &_o severe_a search_n of_o the_o almighty_a because_o he_o will_v not_o search_v himself_o our_o body_n &_o life_n be_v free_a from_o spanish_a inquisition_n which_o be_v one_o of_o the_o last_o prop_n be_v god_n corn_n field_n and_o we_o be_v the_o corn_n heap_n of_o god_n and_o those_o brownist_n and_o sectary_n be_v blind_a and_o besot_v who_o can_v see_v that_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v a_o godly_a heap_n of_o god_n corn_n but_o withal_o we_o must_v confess_v we_o be_v full_a of_o chaff_n that_o be_v of_o profane_a and_o wicked_a hypocrite_n who_o heart_n and_o mind_n abound_v in_o sin_n and_o rebellion_n and_o many_o of_o our_o best_a professor_n be_v also_o too_o full_a of_o chaff_n that_o be_v of_o corruption_n and_o do_v give_v themselves_o too_o much_o liberty_n in_o many_o sin_n but_o alas_o the_o pure_a wheat_n how_o thin_a be_v it_o scatter_v how_o hard_o to_o find_v a_o man_n at_o least_o a_o family_n which_o dedicate_v themselves_o to_o the_o lord_n in_o holy_a and_o sincere_a obedience_n and_o labour_n to_o make_v conscience_n of_o all_o sin_n now_o therefore_o see_v we_o be_v god_n corn_n field_n and_o we_o have_v some_o pure_a wheat_n among_o much_o chaff_n therefore_o god_n will_v winnow_v we_o to_o find_v out_o the_o corn_n if_o he_o have_v but_o one_o corn_n of_o wheat_n in_o a_o handful_n of_o chaff_n but_o one_o good_a man_n of_o many_o he_o will_v stir_v all_o the_o heap_n for_o those_o few_o corner_n he_o will_v not_o care_v to_o blow_v all_o the_o chaff_n to_o hell_n to_o find_v out_o those_o few_o corn_n of_o wheat_n to_o lay_v they_o blow_v three_o or_o four_o blast_n have_v blow_v over_o we_o famine_n pestilence_n earthquake_n fire_n water_n wind_n these_o have_v so_o blow_v some_o of_o we_o that_o they_o have_v take_v away_o a_o great_a number_n of_o we_o for_o we_o that_o remain_v week_n this_o only_a remain_v that_o we_o strengthen_v ourselves_o by_o grace_n to_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v against_o the_o next_o blast_n for_o come_v it_o will_v and_o when_o it_o come_v no_o wealth_n nor_o worldly_a thing_n can_v enable_v we_o to_o endure_v it_o only_a faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n will_v stand_v at_o that_o day_n now_o therefore_o in_o that_o so_o fearful_a a_o fan_a abide_v we_o see_v it_o be_v so_o near_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o blast_n already_o past_a over_o we_o which_o be_v nothing_o but_o the_o forerunner_n of_o a_o great_a tempest_n what_o shall_v be_v our_o care_n except_o we_o care_v not_o to_o be_v blow_v body_n and_o soul_n into_o hell_n but_o to_o labour_v to_o eschew_v this_o fearful_a fan_n of_o god_n wrath_n or_o at_o least_o if_o it_o come_v upon_o we_o that_o it_o may_v not_o blow_v we_o to_o hell_n but_o hasten_v we_o to_o heaven_n if_o thy_o heart_n be_v be_v find_v light_a chaff_n and_o so_o fly_v away_o and_o be_v consume_v before_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n concern_v this_o duty_n of_o search_v let_v we_o observe_v first_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n urge_v the_o jew_n to_o repent_v use_v not_o the_o word_n repentance_n but_o bid_v they_o search_v themselves_o yet_o meaning_n he_o will_v have_v they_o to_o repent_v give_v we_o to_o over_o a_o narrow_a bridge_n or_o some_o dangerous_a and_o steep_a rock_n at_o midnight_n fear_v not_o because_o he_o see_v no_o danger_n but_o bring_v the_o same_o man_n in_o the_o morning_n and_o let_v he_o see_v the_o narrow_a bridge_n he_o go_v over_o in_o the_o night_n under_o which_o run_v a_o violent_a stream_n and_o a_o bottomless_a gulf_n and_o the_o dangerous_a mountain_n and_o rock_n he_o pass_v over_o and_o he_o will_v wonder_v at_o his_o own_o boldness_n and_o shrink_v for_o fear_n to_o think_v of_o it_o and_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n venture_v the_o same_o way_n again_o for_o now_o he_o see_v the_o height_n of_o the_o mountain_n the_o steepenesse_n of_o the_o hill_n the_o cragginesse_n of_o the_o rock_n the_o fearful_a downfall_n and_o the_o furious_a violence_n of_o the_o stream_n underneath_o and_o thereby_o see_v the_o extreme_a danger_n which_o afore_o he_o see_v not_o therefore_o he_o wonder_v and_o rejoice_v that_o he_o have_v escape_v so_o great_a a_o danger_n and_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n be_v draw_v to_o go_v that_o way_n in_o the_o day_n which_o he_o go_v most_o careless_o in_o the_o darkness_n of_o the_o night_n but_o seek_v another_o way_n though_o it_o shall_v be_v far_o about_o so_o a_o sinner_n in_o his_o first_o estate_n which_o be_v natural_a and_o corrupt_a as_o we_o be_v breed_v and_o bear_v have_v a_o veil_n before_o his_o face_n so_o that_o he_o see_v nothing_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o the_o curse_n due_a for_o sin_n hell_n &_o damnation_n seek_v to_o devour_v he_o he_o see_v they_o not_o although_o live_v always_o in_o sin_n he_o walk_v in_o the_o very_a jaw_n of_o hell_n itself_o and_o because_o he_o see_v not_o this_o fearful_a danger_n therefore_o he_o refuse_v no_o sin_n at_o all_o but_o rush_v secure_o into_o all_o manner_n of_o sin_n the_o night_n of_o impenitency_n and_o the_o mist_n of_o ignorance_n so_o blind_a his_o eye_n that_o he_o see_v not_o the_o narrow_a bridge_n of_o this_o life_n from_o which_o if_o he_o slide_v he_o fall_v immediate_o into_o the_o bottomless_a pit_n of_o hell_n but_o when_o as_o god_n spirit_n have_v by_o the_o light_n of_o god_n word_n open_v his_o eye_n and_o touch_v his_o heart_n to_o consider_v his_o estate_n than_o he_o see_v the_o frail_a bridge_n of_o this_o narrow_a life_n and_o how_o little_a a_o step_n there_o be_v between_o he_o and_o damnation_n then_o he_o see_v hell_n open_a due_a for_o his_o sin_n and_o himself_o in_o the_o highway_n to_o it_o sin_n be_v the_o craggy_a rock_n and_o hell_n the_o gape_a gulf_n under_o it_o this_o life_n be_v again_o &_o thus_o the_o search_a and_o see_v into_o the_o foulness_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o danger_n thereof_o be_v the_o first_o beginning_n of_o repentance_n and_o the_o first_o step_n into_o grace_n this_o doctrine_n teach_v we_o what_o faith_n and_o repentance_n be_v general_o in_o the_o world_n all_o man_n say_v they_o believe_v and_o have_v repent_v long_o ago_o but_o try_v it_o well_o and_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o the_o body_n of_o our_o nation_n but_o a_o lip_n faith_n and_o a_o lip_n repentance_n for_o even_o when_o they_o say_v so_o they_o be_v blind_a and_o ignorant_a of_o their_o own_o estate_n and_o know_v not_o themselves_o that_o because_o they_o be_v baptize_v and_o live_v in_o the_o church_n therefore_o they_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n &_o in_o very_o good_a estate_n when_o as_o they_o never_o yet_o be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n and_o be_v so_o far_o from_o it_o that_o they_o never_o yet_o see_v any_o sin_n in_o themselves_o whereof_o they_o shall_v repent_v as_o a_o man_n travel_v in_o the_o night_n see_v no_o danger_n but_o plod_v on_o without_o fear_n so_o the_o most_o part_n of_o our_o common_a people_n in_o the_o night_n of_o their_o ignorance_n think_v and_o presume_v they_o love_v and_o fear_n god_n and_o love_v their_o neighbour_n and_o that_o they_o have_v ever_o do_v so_o nay_o it_o be_v the_o common_a opinion_n that_o a_o man_n may_v do_v so_o by_o nature_n and_o that_o he_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o live_v who_o do_v not_o love_n god_n with_o all_o his_o heart_n and_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ._n but_o alas_o poor_a simple_a soul_n they_o never_o know_v what_o sin_n be_v never_o search_v nor_o see_v into_o their_o own_o heart_n with_o the_o light_n of_o god_n law_n for_o if_o they_o have_v they_o shall_v have_v see_v such_o a_o sea_n of_o corruption_n that_o then_o they_o will_v confess_v it_o to_o be_v the_o hard_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o love_n god_n &_o to_o
pass_v upon_o they_o and_o thy_o sin_n and_o corruption_n which_o thou_o find_v to_o be_v chaff_n blow_v they_o away_o by_o repentance_n so_o shall_v thou_o remain_v pure_a and_o clean_a wheat_n fit_a for_o the_o house_n and_o church_n of_o god_n in_o this_o world_n and_o for_o his_o kingdom_n in_o heaven_n but_o if_o we_o will_v not_o do_v this_o then_o alas_o what_o will_v follow_v my_o heart_n grieve_v to_o utter_v it_o but_o i_o must_v unless_o i_o shall_v be_v a_o false_a prophet_n and_o therefore_o i_o will_n our_o long_a peace_n plenty_n and_o ease_n have_v breed_v great_a sin_n so_o great_a that_o they_o reach_v to_o heaven_n and_o provoke_v god_n majesty_n to_o his_o face_n &_o so_o strong_a that_o they_o will_v violent_o draw_v down_o judgement_n from_o god_n upon_o we_o which_o when_o they_o come_v they_o will_v be_v so_o powerful_a and_o so_o violent_a that_o they_o will_v blow_v we_o away_o like_o chaff_n and_o bring_v this_o kingdom_n to_o some_o miserable_a ruin_n o_o therefore_o how_o happy_a be_v we_o if_o we_o can_v entertain_v this_o doctrine_n &_o practice_v it_o for_o in_o so_o do_v we_o shall_v prevent_v god_n judgement_n we_o shall_v continue_v the_o gospel_n to_o this_o land_n and_o preserve_v this_o glorious_a nation_n from_o be_v destroy_v or_o dispeople_v by_o some_o fearful_a judgement_n belove_a fair_a you_o come_v hither_o to_o this_o place_n purposely_o to_o buy_v and_o sell_v and_o thereby_o to_o better_v your_o estate_n in_o this_o world_n how_o happy_a then_o be_v you_o if_o beside_o the_o good_a market_n you_o make_v for_o your_o body_n and_o estate_n you_o learn_v also_o how_o to_o make_v yourselves_o abide_v the_o trial_n of_o god_n judgement_n and_o how_o to_o be_v make_v pure_a corn_n fit_a to_o replenish_v the_o garner_n of_o heaven_n and_o how_o to_o continue_v god_n favour_n and_o the_o gospel_n to_o this_o nation_n if_o thou_o go_v away_o with_o this_o lesson_n thou_o have_v a_o jewel_n more_o worth_a than_o thou_o shall_v go_v home_o possess_v of_o all_o the_o huge_a riches_n of_o this_o fair_a you_o call_v this_o and_o such_o like_a time_n fair_a time_n but_o if_o thou_o learn_v this_o lesson_n of_o all_o this_o while_n i_o here_o offer_v unto_o thou_o every_o one_o bring_v hither_o something_o to_o be_v sell_v this_o be_v the_o merchandise_n that_o i_o bring_v and_o set_v to_o sale_n unto_o you_o what_o ever_o commodity_n any_o of_o you_o bring_v it_o be_v from_o some_o quarter_n of_o this_o land_n but_o all_o be_v from_o the_o earth_n but_o this_o that_o i_o bring_v it_o be_v from_o heaven_n and_o all_o the_o earth_n can_v yield_v it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v from_o heaven_n so_o it_o be_v of_o a_o heavenly_a virtue_n and_o will_v work_v that_o which_o all_o the_o wealth_n in_o this_o fair_a be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v therefore_o cast_v not_o to_o buy_v the_o base_a and_o let_v pass_v the_o best_a of_o all_o and_o never_o allege_v that_o it_o be_v above_o thy_o compass_n
