to_o ourselves_o but_o return_v the_o whole_a back_n to_o god_n it_o be_v not_o without_o great_a mystery_n that_o christ_n our_o saviour_n when_o he_o appear_v to_o his_o disciple_n upon_o the_o day_n of_o his_o glorious_a ascension_n reprove_v they_o first_o for_o their_o incredulity_n and_o hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o command_v they_o afterward_o to_o go_v and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n throughout_o the_o whole_a world_n and_o give_v they_o power_n to_o work_v many_o and_o mighty_a miracle_n for_o he_o give_v we_o thereby_o to_o understand_v that_o he_o who_o be_v to_o be_v exalt_v to_o the_o do_v of_o great_a thing_n have_v need_n to_o be_v humble_v first_o and_o to_o be_v abase_v in_o himself_o and_o to_o have_v a_o true_a knowledge_n of_o his_o own_o faculty_n and_o misery_n that_o so_o though_o afterward_o he_o come_v to_o great_a perfection_n he_o may_v yet_o remain_v still_o entire_a in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o himself_o and_o stick_v fast_o to_o the_o understanding_n regard_n of_o our_o own_o improvement_n lest_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v grow_v vain_a and_o proud_a and_o so_o cast_v away_o ourselves_o but_o beside_o for_o the_o gain_n of_o our_o neighhour_n and_o the_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o their_o soul_n one_o of_o the_o most_o principal_a mean_n towards_o this_o end_n be_v humility_n and_o that_o we_o distrust_v ourselves_o and_o that_o we_o rely_v not_o upon_o our_o own_o industry_n or_o prudence_n or_o other_o part_n but_o that_o we_o place_v all_o our_o confidence_n in_o god_n and_o ascribe_v and_o refer_v all_o to_o he_o according_a to_o that_o of_o the_o wise_a man_n put_v your_o confidence_n in_o god_n with_o your_o whole_a heart_n and_o rely_v not_o upon_o your_o own_o prudence_n and_o the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v as_o afterward_o i_o shall_v declare_v more_o at_o large_a because_o when_o through_o distrust_n of_o ourselves_o we_o place_v all_o our_o confidence_n in_o god_n we_o ascribe_v it_o all_o to_o he_o and_o put_v the_o whole_a business_n to_o his_o account_n whereby_o we_o oblige_v he_o much_o to_o take_v care_n thereof_o o_o lord_n dispatch_v thy_o own_o business_n the_o conversion_n of_o soul_n be_v thou_o and_o two_o balance_n for_o look_v how_o much_o the_o one_o rise_v so_o much_o the_o other_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o fall_v as_o much_o as_o we_o attribute_v to_o ourselves_o so_o much_o we_o take_v from_o god_n and_o run_v away_o with_o the_o glory_n and_o honour_n which_o be_v only_o he_o and_o thus_o he_o come_v to_o permit_v that_o no_o effect_n be_v wrought_v and_o i_o pray_v god_n that_o this_o be_v not_o sometime_o the_o cause_n why_o we_o do_v our_o neighbour_n no_o more_o good_a we_o read_v of_o many_o preacher_n in_o former_a time_n and_o remember_v some_o of_o our_o own_o time_n who_o though_o they_o be_v not_o very_o learned_a man_n no_o nor_o very_o eloquent_a yet_o by_o their_o preach_v catechise_n and_o private_a communication_n in_o a_o humble_a and_o low_a way_n have_v convert_v quicken_v inflame_a and_o strengthen_v many_o of_o their_o flock_n not_o in_o the_o persuade_a word_n of_o humane_a wisdom_n but_o in_o the_o manifestation_n of_o spirit_n and_o truth_n as_o saint_n paul_n say_v they_o be_v distrustful_a of_o themselves_o and_o place_v all_o their_o confidence_n in_o god_n and_o so_o god_n give_v strength_n &_o spirit_n to_o their_o word_n which_o seem_v even_o to_o dâ—rt_v burn_a slame_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o their_o hearer_n and_o now_o i_o know_v not_o whether_o the_o reason_n why_o we_o produce_v not_o at_o this_o day_n so_o great_a fruit_n be_v not_o because_o we_o stick_v much_o close_o to_o the_o opinion_n of_o our_o own_o prudence_n &_o because_o we_o rest_v and_o rely_v much_o upon_o our_o own_o mean_n of_o persuasion_n and_o our_o learning_n and_o discourse_n and_o our_o polite_a and_o elegant_a manner_n of_o declare_v our_o mind_n and_o we_o go_v gu_v and_o delight_v ourselves_o much_o with_o ourselves_o o_o well_o then_o say_v god_n when_o you_o conceive_v that_o you_o have_v say_v the_o best_a thing_n and_o deliver_v the_o most_o convince_a reason_n and_o remain_v content_a and_o jolly_a with_o conceit_n that_o you_o have_v do_v great_a matter_n you_o shall_v then_o effect_v least_o of_o all_o and_o that_o shall_v be_v fulfil_v in_o you_o which_o the_o prophet_n isay_n say_v give_v they_o a_o barren_a womb_n and_o soul_n come_v to_o hold_v that_o for_o faulty_a which_o he_o who_o enjoy_v not_o so_o great_a light_n will_v esteem_v to_o be_v good_a this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o all_o holy_a man_n be_v so_o humble_a and_o hold_v themselves_o in_o so_o small_a account_n and_o the_o more_o holy_a and_o perfect_a they_o be_v they_o be_v the_o more_o humble_a and_o the_o account_n wherein_o they_o hold_v themselves_o be_v so_o much_o the_o less_o for_o still_o as_o they_o have_v more_o light_n and_o great_a knowledge_n of_o god_n they_o know_v themselves_o better_a and_o see_v that_o of_o their_o own_o stock_n they_o can_v brag_v but_o only_o of_o nothing_o and_o of_o sin_n and_o how_o much_o soever_o they_o know_v themselves_o and_o how_o many_o fault_n soever_o they_o see_v in_o their_o own_o soul_n they_o still_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v many_o more_o which_o they_o see_v not_o and_o conceive_v that_o the_o least_o part_n thereof_o be_v that_o which_o they_o can_v come_v to_o know_v and_o after_o this_o rate_n do_v they_o esteem_v themselves_o for_o as_o they_o believe_v that_o god_n be_v more_o good_a than_o they_o be_v able_a to_o comprehend_v so_o also_o do_v they_o believe_v that_o themselves_o be_v more_o wicked_a than_o they_o can_v understand_v and_o as_o how_o much_o soever_o we_o conceive_v or_o know_v of_o god_n we_o can_v perfect_o comprehend_v he_o but_o still_o there_o will_v be_v more_o and_o much_o more_o to_o be_v conceive_v and_o know_v so_o how_o much_o soever_o we_o know_v ourselves_o and_o how_o much_o soever_o we_o humble_v and_o despise_v ourselves_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o descend_v so_o low_a as_o to_o arrive_v to_o the_o depth_n of_o our_o misery_n and_o this_o be_v no_o aggraration_n but_o a_o clear_a truth_n for_o since_o man_n have_v nothing_o of_o his_o own_o store_n but_o nothing_o and_o sin_n who_o will_v ever_o be_v able_a to_o humble_a and_o abase_v himself_o so_o much_o as_o those_o two_o title_n he_o who_o make_v you_o lose_v eternal_a glory_n and_o deserve_v hell_n for_o even_o him_z who_o wrought_v you_o so_o much_o hurt_v and_o still_o persist_v in_o do_v it_o do_v you_o not_o think_v that_o you_o have_v cause_n to_o detest_v well_o now_o this_o person_n be_v yourself_o a_o opposite_a and_o enemy_n of_o god_n a_o opposite_a and_o enemy_n of_o your_o own_o salvation_n chap._n x._o that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o one_o self_n do_v not_o cause_n dismay_v but_o rather_o give_v conrage_v and_o strength_n there_o be_v another_o great_a benefit_n which_o grow_v from_o the_o exercise_n of_o know_v a_o man_n self_n that_o not_o only_o it_o cause_v no_o dismay_n or_o base_a fear_n as_o perhaps_o some_o may_v doubt_v but_o rather_o a_o great_a heart_n and_o courage_n towards_o all_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v good_a and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v that_o when_o a_o man_n know_v himself_o he_o see_v that_o here_o be_v no_o colour_n why_o he_o shall_v rely_v upon_o himself_o but_o that_o distrust_v himself_o he_o must_v put_v all_o his_o confidence_n in_o god_n in_o who_o he_o find_v himself_o strong_a and_o able_a for_o all_o thing_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o these_o be_v the_o man_n who_o be_v apt_a to_o attempt_v and_o undertake_v great_a thing_n and_o these_o be_v they_o who_o go_v through_o with_o they_o for_o in_o regard_n they_o ascribe_v all_o to_o god_n and_o nothing_o to_o themselves_o god_n take_v the_o business_n in_o hand_n and_o make_v it_o he_o and_o hold_v it_o upon_o his_o own_o account_n and_o then_o he_o be_v wont_a to_o do_v mighty_a thing_n and_o even_a wonder_n by_o the_o mean_n of_o weak_a instrument_n to_o show_v the_o riches_n and_o treasure_n of_o his_o mercy_n god_n will_v do_v wonderful_a thing_n by_o instrument_n who_o because_o we_o put_v our_o confidence_n in_o our_o own_o mean_n and_o in_o our_o own_o diligence_n and_o preparation_n and_o at_o other_o time_n we_o be_v prevent_v with_o great_a benediction_n and_o to_o love_v humane_a honour_n and_o estimation_n for_o itself_o and_o to_o dwell_v as_o it_o be_v therein_o for_o his_o own_o respect_n and_o contentment_n that_o so_o he_o may_v grow_v great_a and_o be_v celebrate_v among_o man_n and_o this_o be_v naught_o but_o another_o thing_n it_o be_v when_o this_o be_v like_v for_o some_o good_a end_n as_o for_o the_o good_a of_o our_o neighbour_n and_o to_o give_v help_n to_o soul_n and_o this_o be_v not_o ill_o but_o good_a and_o thus_o we_o may_v well_o desire_v opinion_n and_o estimation_n of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o they_o may_v have_v we_o in_o good_a conceir_n for_o the_o great_a glory_n of_o god_n and_o because_o it_o may_v be_v necessary_a for_o the_o edification_n of_o our_o neighbour_n and_o for_o the_o benefit_n of_o their_o thing_n as_o may_v conduce_v towards_o it_o because_o they_o will_v never_o do_v it_o but_o when_o it_o may_v be_v necessary_a for_o the_o great_a glory_n of_o god_n yea_o and_o even_o then_o they_o do_v it_o so_o much_o without_o the_o stick_n of_o any_o part_n thereof_o to_o themselves_o as_o if_o they_o have_v not_o do_v it_o at_o all_o for_o they_o love_v not_o their_o own_o honour_n but_o the_o high_a sort_n of_o ministery_n i_o know_v not_o whether_o you_o will_v be_v able_a alas_o those_o angel_n once_o of_o heaven_n know_v not_o how_o to_o do_v this_o but_o they_o grow_v proud_a
