bring_v in_o in_o the_o late_a reign_n and_o encourage_v during_o that_o time_n both_o in_o clergy_n and_o people_n and_o in_o order_n perhaps_o to_o prepare_v the_o way_n for_o popery_n carry_v on_o so_o far_o then_o that_o it_o be_v now_o a_o very_a hard_a matter_n to_o reform_v it_o 2._o another_o thing_n that_o much_o promote_v it_o be_v the_o division_n and_o faction_n both_o in_o church_n and_o state_n the_o grol_v enthusiasm_n of_o the_o late_a time_n and_o the_o many_o ill_a thing_n do_v under_o the_o pretence_n of_o conscience_n and_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o open_a profaneness_n of_o some_o in_o opposition_n to_o they_o add_v to_o this_o that_o both_o side_n too_o much_o make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o expose_v one_o another_o and_o so_o make_v each_o other_o appear_v indeed_o much_o worse_a than_o they_o be_v by_o which_o mean_n great_a occasion_n be_v give_v to_o ill_a man_n first_o to_o look_v on_o all_o side_n as_o knave_n and_o then_o to_o laugh_v at_o all_o pretence_n to_o religion_n 3._o another_o thing_n that_o accidental_o come_v in_o to_o help_v it_o forward_o may_v be_v this_o that_o at_o the_o same_o time_n such_o offence_n be_v give_v and_o there_o be_v such_o great_a corruption_n of_o manner_n mr._n hobbs_n philosophy_n and_o that_o of_o some_o other_o come_v much_o in_o vogue_n which_o bring_v in_o some_o loose_a principle_n and_o encourage_v man_n in_o a_o sceptical_a humour_n and_o make_v they_o suspect_v every_o thing_n and_o when_o once_o man_n of_o ill_a life_n be_v unhinged_a in_o their_o principle_n they_o will_v hardly_o be_v at_o the_o pain_n to_o think_v deep_a enough_o to_o set_v themselves_o right_a again_o especial_o when_o their_o religion_n be_v so_o contradictory_n to_o their_o lust_n 4._o another_o thing_n that_o may_v have_v promote_v it_o be_v the_o detection_n of_o the_o gross_a forgery_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n as_o to_o miracle_n and_o other_o thing_n which_o though_o find_v out_o in_o the_o last_o age_n yet_o then_o only_o increase_v man_n zeal_n against_o popery_n but_o now_o when_o man_n be_v become_v more_o indifferent_a in_o religion_n it_o have_v a_o very_a different_a effect_n and_o incline_v many_o people_n to_o suspect_v the_o evidence_n of_o christianity_n itself_o though_o very_o absurd_o the_o case_n be_v so_o very_o different_a 5._o another_o great_a cause_n of_o it_o may_v be_v this_o that_o religion_n have_v be_v open_o expose_v common_o in_o our_o play_n they_o have_v not_o indeed_o bring_v our_o saviour_n upon_o the_o stage_n and_o expose_v he_o in_o person_n but_o it_o have_v be_v almost_o as_o bad_a they_o have_v make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o laugh_v at_o the_o true_a life_n of_o religion_n at_o all_o sense_n of_o conscience_n or_o talk_v serious_o about_o spiritual_a matter_n they_o have_v encourage_v looseness_n and_o debauchery_n and_o make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o make_v they_o as_o easy_a to_o the_o world_n as_o possible_a in_o short_a the_o whole_a genius_n and_o spirit_n of_o our_o modern_a play_n be_v as_o contrary_a to_o that_o of_o the_o christian_a religion_n as_o darkness_n be_v to_o light_n and_o then_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n if_o people_n that_o be_v much_o conversant_a in_o these_o do_v in_o some_o time_n lose_v all_o sense_n of_o the_o other_o 6._o i_o shall_v name_v at_o present_a but_o this_o one_o more_o which_o though_o not_o much_o take_v notice_n of_o may_v have_v have_v a_o considerable_a influence_n this_o way_n upon_o young_a gentleman_n especial_o and_o that_o be_v this_o that_o by_o the_o false_a law_n of_o honour_n now_o in_o vogue_n they_o see_v they_o can_v live_v and_o act_v like_o gentleman_n and_o at_o the_o same_o time_n keep_v to_o the_o plain_a rule_n of_o their_o religion_n christ_n command_v we_o to_o forgive_v injury_n not_o to_o render_v evil_a for_o evil_n but_o if_o a_o gentleman_n at_o present_n will_v cut_v his_o neighbour_n throat_n for_o a_o small_a affront_n he_o must_v be_v content_v to_o suffer_v himself_o what_o be_v very_o hard_a to_o be_v bear_v to_o be_v expose_v and_o count_v a_o coward_n and_o be_v perhaps_o kick_v out_o of_o company_n by_o which_o mean_v the_o christian_a religion_n be_v real_o in_o a_o state_n of_o persecution_n now_o this_o be_v a_o great_a snare_n to_o young_a gentleman_n and_o must_v make_v very_o many_o of_o they_o resolve_v rather_o to_o leave_v their_o religion_n in_o that_o point_n than_o undergo_v what_o be_v so_o hard_a to_o be_v bear_v and_o though_o the_o case_n do_v never_o happen_v to_o they_o yet_o the_o very_a resolution_n must_v debauch_v the_o conscience_n take_v away_o much_o if_o not_o all_o the_o authority_n religion_n have_v over_o it_o which_o must_v needs_o make_v that_o very_o uneasy_a and_o so_o incline_v he_o for_o his_o own_o quiet_a to_o throw_v it_o quite_o off_o or_o come_v to_o despise_v it_o as_o not_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o life_n and_o action_n of_o a_o gentleman_n have_v our_o author_n design_n be_v to_o give_v we_o a_o full_a account_n of_o the_o growth_n of_o deism_n in_o england_n he_o can_v hardly_o have_v miss_v either_o of_o these_o or_o some_o other_o cause_n beside_o those_o he_o mention_n which_o i_o shall_v now_o take_v the_o liberty_n a_o little_a to_o reflect_v upon_o he_o lay_v then_o the_o whole_a gild_n of_o the_o growth_n of_o deism_n upon_o the_o clergy_n a_o very_a severe_a charge_n and_o which_o if_o true_a must_v just_o make_v they_o the_o hatred_n both_o of_o god_n and_o man._n certain_o clergyman_n of_o all_o person_n aught_o to_o take_v care_n of_o themselves_o that_o they_o may_v not_o if_o possible_a so_o much_o as_o by_o any_o infirmity_n prejudice_n man_n against_o that_o holy_a religion_n which_o they_o be_v commissioned_n by_o god_n to_o keep_v up_o and_o propagate_v in_o the_o world_n and_o they_o will_v have_v very_o much_o to_o answer_v for_o to_o their_o great_a master_n if_o they_o do_v like_o eli_n son_n make_v themselves_o vile_a and_o make_v people_n abhor_v the_o offering_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o then_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o it_o be_v so_o great_a a_o sin_n in_o they_o to_o make_v themselves_o vile_a it_o be_v so_o in_o other_o to_o endeavour_v to_o render_v they_o so_o for_o if_o they_o be_v make_v vile_a and_o contemptible_a the_o mischief_n and_o prejudice_n to_o religion_n be_v the_o same_o whether_o they_o be_v make_v so_o by_o their_o own_o fault_n or_o other_o people_n the_o very_a same_o obligation_n that_o lie_v upon_o minister_n to_o take_v care_n of_o themselves_o the_o same_o lie_v upon_o other_o people_n not_o to_o defame_v they_o or_o misrepresent_v their_o action_n or_o aggravate_v their_o infirmity_n because_o upon_o their_o reputation_n the_o good_a of_o religion_n do_v indeed_o very_o much_o depend_v if_o they_o lose_v their_o reputation_n by_o their_o own_o fault_n they_o must_v be_v accountable_a for_o all_o the_o ill_a effect_n of_o it_o but_o if_o other_o people_n will_v do_v it_o either_o by_o invent_v or_o aggravate_v matter_n the_o gild_n must_v light_v there_o where_o the_o fault_n be_v i_o will_v therefore_o once_o more_o apply_v myself_o to_o our_o author_n that_o he_o will_v serious_o ask_v his_o own_o conscience_n whether_o though_o he_o represent_v the_o only_a cause_n of_o deism_n to_o be_v the_o ill_a opinion_n man_n have_v of_o clergyman_n yet_o he_o do_v not_o in_o this_o pamphlet_n make_v it_o his_o endeavour_n to_o render_v they_o as_o vile_a as_o he_o can_v and_o who_o work_n he_o can_v suppose_v he_o have_v be_v do_v in_o it_o for_o either_o the_o foundation_n of_o his_o book_n must_v be_v simple_a and_o impertinent_a that_o the_o ill_a opinion_n the_o world_n have_v of_o clergyman_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o growth_n of_o deism_n or_o else_o he_o himself_o must_v grant_v that_o the_o expose_v they_o with_o so_o much_o virulence_n must_v certain_o serve_v the_o same_o end_n 2._o i_o will_v ask_v he_o whether_o he_o have_v observe_v those_o rule_n in_o this_o pamphlet_n which_o every_o honest_a man_n shall_v observe_v when_o he_o speak_v ill_a of_o any_o and_o much_o more_o in_o a_o case_n of_o such_o importance_n as_o this_o be_v every_o man_n that_o will_v meddle_v with_o matter_n of_o this_o nature_n shall_v take_v care_n 1._o that_o he_o speak_v nothing_o but_o what_o be_v exact_a truth_n 2._o that_o he_o relate_v matter_n in_o a_o plain_a and_o natural_a way_n without_o put_v false_a colour_n upon_o they_o without_o put_v in_o or_o leave_v out_o circumstance_n that_o may_v quite_o alter_v the_o matter_n that_o he_o do_v aggravate_v little_a thing_n or_o use_v tragical_a or_o ridiculous_a expression_n to_o disguise_n but_o in_o short_a that_o he_o represent_v thing_n as_o they_o real_o be_v 3._o when_o a_o
upon_o methinks_v this_o be_v but_o a_o poor_a pitiful_a thing_n and_o a_o melancholy_a prospect_n to_o any_o that_o regard_v the_o dignity_n of_o his_o nature_n and_o yet_o be_v the_o very_o best_a that_o such_o a_o man_n can_v propose_v and_o a_o favour_n that_o after_o all_o he_o can_v be_v certain_a of_o this_o be_v indeed_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v much_o better_a than_o to_o be_v eternal_o miserable_a and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o so_o many_o wicked_a man_n fly_v to_o it_o as_o their_o refuge_n and_o indeed_o they_o be_v in_o the_o right_n of_o it_o if_o either_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o be_v unavoidable_a but_o since_o by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n this_o may_v be_v avoid_v only_o by_o leave_v our_o sin_n it_o must_v be_v great_a stupidity_n for_o a_o man_n to_o look_v upon_o it_o to_o be_v his_o interest_n to_o die_v like_o the_o beast_n that_o perish_v so_o he_o may_v but_o indulge_v himself_o a_o little_a while_n here_o rather_o than_o have_v the_o principle_n of_o christianity_n true_a according_a to_o which_o it_o be_v in_o his_o power_n by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o be_v happy_a for_o ever_o and_o in_o prospect_n of_o that_o to_o make_v his_o life_n very_o comfortable_a in_o this_o world_n 3._o i_o will_v desire_v they_o to_o consider_v serious_o whether_o they_o have_v think_v upon_o the_o matter_n as_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v whether_o they_o have_v thorough_o and_o with_o attention_n weigh_v the_o principle_n of_o religion_n and_o the_o argument_n for_o they_o to_o see_v whether_o they_o be_v true_a or_o no._n it_o be_v plain_a that_o these_o thing_n have_v be_v the_o belief_n of_o many_o wise_a consider_v man_n for_o several_a age_n who_o have_v venture_v all_o they_o have_v in_o the_o world_n upon_o it_o and_o lose_v all_o for_o it_o and_o therefore_o the_o matter_n shall_v be_v at_o least_o well_o examine_v before_o they_o venture_v to_o declare_v against_o it_o for_o before_o that_o be_v do_v they_o can_v tell_v but_o after_o all_o it_o may_v prove_v true_a and_o if_o it_o do_v they_o be_v undo_v for_o ever_o but_o then_o the_o business_n must_v not_o be_v weigh_v slight_o or_o put_v off_o with_o a_o jest_n or_o judge_v only_o by_o objection_n which_o wit_n may_v raise_v against_o any_o thing_n and_o of_o which_o perhaps_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o sublimity_n of_o the_o matter_n we_o be_v not_o proper_a judge_n but_o the_o whole_a evidence_n must_v be_v take_v together_o and_o after_o all_o we_o must_v not_o expect_v strict_a demonstration_n in_o a_o case_n which_o suppose_v it_o true_a will_v not_o admit_v of_o it_o but_o be_v content_a with_o such_o reason_n and_o proof_n as_o a_o honest_a impartial_a man_n will_v be_v in_o a_o matter_n of_o this_o kind_n but_o above_o all_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o we_o purge_v our_o mind_n from_o all_o earthly_a and_o sensual_a passion_n we_o must_v endeavour_v after_o a_o great_a sincerity_n and_o purity_n of_o soul_n for_o religion_n the_o christian_a religion_n especial_o be_v a_o thing_n of_o a_o spiritual_a and_o sublime_a nature_n direct_o contrary_a to_o all_o those_o mean_a passion_n and_o inclination_n that_o debase_v the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o till_o that_o be_v purify_v a_o man_n be_v no_o proper_a judge_n in_o this_o matter_n he_o can_v relish_v or_o see_v the_o excellency_n of_o this_o religion_n common_a sense_n must_v indeed_o judge_v of_o the_o external_a argument_n that_o prove_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o and_o from_o they_o a_o very_a wicked_a man_n may_v conclude_v that_o this_o be_v the_o true_a religion_n but_o still_o a_o man_n can_v hardly_o discern_v at_o least_o not_o taste_v and_o inward_o feel_v the_o excellency_n of_o it_o without_o purity_n of_o soul_n which_o must_v take_v away_o much_o of_o the_o force_n of_o those_o argument_n bring_v for_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o to_o conclude_v this_o matter_n a_o guilty_a defile_a soul_n must_v needs_o be_v of_o a_o party_n against_o the_o christian_a religion_n and_o therefore_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o be_v a_o judge_n consider_v therefore_o serious_o with_o yourselves_o whether_o all_o this_o i_o have_v now_o speak_v of_o have_v be_v do_v and_o whether_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a madness_n in_o the_o world_n to_o venture_v your_o soul_n upon_o it_o if_o it_o have_v not_o have_v now_o finish_v what_o i_o design_v i_o will_v humble_o take_v leave_n before_o i_o conclude_v in_o a_o few_o word_n to_o address_v myself_o to_o the_o reverend_a clergy_n of_o this_o kingdom_n who_o be_v the_o person_n principal_o strike_v at_o in_o that_o pamphlet_n upon_o which_o i_o have_v be_v reflect_v that_o since_o their_o enemy_n take_v all_o occasion_n not_o only_o to_o make_v they_o vile_a but_o from_o thence_o also_o to_o reflect_v upon_o our_o holy_a religion_n they_o will_v make_v it_o their_o great_a care_n to_o cut_v off_o all_o such_o occasion_n from_o those_o who_o seek_v it_o it_o have_v be_v a_o great_a misfortune_n to_o the_o present_v establish_v church_n that_o it_o have_v have_v so_o many_o enemy_n of_o all_o sort_n who_o have_v be_v ready_a to_o pry_v into_o the_o life_n and_o action_n of_o the_o clergy_n to_o expose_v all_o their_o fail_n and_o misrepresent_v thing_n that_o may_v well_o bear_v a_o good_a construction_n not_o after_o all_o but_o that_o in_o so_o great_a a_o body_n of_o man_n we_o must_v expect_v there_o will_v be_v some_o neither_o so_o good_a nor_o so_o wise_a and_o discreet_a as_o the_o true_a friend_n of_o religion_n will_v be_v glad_a to_o see_v they_o but_o i_o hope_v that_o if_o there_o have_v be_v any_o who_o have_v not_o hitherto_o be_v so_o careful_a as_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v they_o will_v now_o especial_o lay_v to_o heart_n the_o great_a obligation_n their_o holy_a profession_n bring_v upon_o they_o because_o not_o only_o their_o own_o honour_n and_o that_o of_o the_o church_n but_o even_o of_o our_o common_a christianity_n be_v concern_v in_o it_o a_o grave_n and_o serious_a a_o diligent_a and_o industrious_a a_o peaceable_a and_o unanimous_a clergy_n be_v the_o likely_a mean_n to_o recover_v the_o reputation_n of_o religion_n and_o to_o make_v it_o sensible_o lovely_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o world_n whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n every_o loose_a or_o careless_a ambitious_a or_o contentious_a clergyman_n do_v indeed_o only_o expose_v and_o betray_v that_o cause_n which_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o promote_v but_o especial_o as_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o essential_a to_o our_o religion_n than_o meekness_n and_o love_n and_o gentleness_n so_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o shock_v than_o to_o see_v the_o contrary_a character_n appear_v in_o the_o sermon_n or_o write_n of_o churchman_n though_o it_o be_v in_o the_o defence_n of_o truth_n it_o be_v very_o bad_a for_o person_n of_o that_o holy_a profession_n to_o be_v guilty_a of_o vice_n in_o the_o private_a conduct_n of_o their_o life_n but_o to_o preach_v or_o to_o write_v bitter_o against_o each_o other_o be_v to_o proclaim_v to_o the_o world_n a_o spirit_n direct_o contrary_a to_o that_o of_o their_o religion_n and_o to_o call_v as_o many_o as_o they_o can_v to_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o in_o short_a religion_n be_v a_o thing_n can_v be_v long_o keep_v up_o as_o secular_a faction_n may_v be_v by_o interest_n or_o grandeur_n or_o any_o thing_n of_o that_o kind_n no_o it_o must_v have_v real_a internal_a esteem_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n otherwise_o the_o effect_n be_v very_o like_a to_o be_v that_o they_o will_v leave_v that_o for_o some_o other_o or_o else_o look_v upon_o all_o religion_n to_o be_v only_a trick_n and_o design_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o no_o action_n of_o man_n can_v alter_v the_o nature_n of_o thing_n or_o make_v that_o religion_n to_o be_v true_a or_o false_a now_o which_o be_v determinate_o one_o of_o they_o many_o hundred_o year_n ago_o but_o it_o be_v not_o every_o body_n that_o either_o can_v or_o will_v consider_v thing_n aright_o that_o require_v some_o pain_n and_o time_n and_o freedom_n from_o prejudice_n but_o a_o good_a life_n especial_o in_o clergyman_n be_v a_o sensible_a and_o a_o visible_a thing_n every_o body_n know_v that_o the_o great_a end_n of_o religion_n be_v to_o make_v man_n pious_a and_o holy_a and_o therefore_o they_o will_v very_o natural_o incline_v there_o where_o they_o see_v most_o of_o that_o to_o conclude_v all_o in_o a_o word_n the_o best_a way_n that_o either_o minister_n or_o people_n can_v serve_v their_o religion_n be_v by_o
