before_o we_o go_v through_o all_o those_o who_o be_v last_o catechize_v have_v more_o ready_o learned_a to_o answer_v to_o they_o by_o hear_v the_o same_o question_n so_o oft_o propound_v and_o answer_v before_o by_o their_o fellow_n and_o the_o other_o indian_n who_o be_v grow_v up_o to_o more_o year_n have_v perfect_o learn_v they_o who_o we_o therefore_o desire_v to_o teach_v their_o child_n again_o when_o we_o be_v absent_a that_o so_o when_o we_o come_v again_o we_o may_v see_v their_o profit_v the_o better_a to_o encourage_v they_o hereunto_o we_o therefore_o give_v something_o to_o every_o child_n this_o catechism_n be_v soon_o end_v he_o that_o preach_v to_o they_o begin_v thus_o speak_v to_o they_o in_o their_o own_o language_n viz_o we_o be_v come_v to_o bring_v you_o good_a news_n from_o the_o great_a god_n almighty_a maker_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o to_o tell_v you_o how_o evil_a and_o wicked_a man_n may_v come_v to_o be_v good_a so_o as_o while_o they_o live_v they_o may_v be_v happy_a and_o when_o they_o die_v they_o may_v go_v to_o god_n and_o live_v in_o heaven_n have_v make_v this_o preface_n he_o begin_v first_o to_o set_v forth_o god_n unto_o they_o by_o familiar_a description_n in_o his_o glorious_a power_n goodness_n and_o greatness_n and_o then_o set_v forth_o before_o they_o what_o his_o will_n be_v and_o what_o he_o require_v of_o all_o man_n even_o of_o the_o indian_n themselves_o in_o the_o ten_o commandment_n and_o then_o tell_v they_o the_o dreadful_a torment_n and_o punishment_n of_o all_o such_o as_o break_v any_o one_o of_o those_o holy_a commandment_n and_o how_o angry_a god_n be_v for_o any_o sin_n and_o transgression_n yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o have_v send_v jesus_n christ_n to_o die_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o to_o pacify_v god_n by_o his_o suffering_n in_o their_o stead_n and_o room_n if_o they_o do_v repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n and_o that_o he_o will_v love_v the_o poor_a miserable_a indian_n if_o now_o they_o seek_v god_n and_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n threaten_v the_o sore_a wrath_n of_o god_n upon_o all_o such_o as_o stand_v out_o and_o neglect_v such_o great_a salvation_n which_o now_o god_n offer_v unto_o they_o by_o those_o who_o seek_v nothing_o more_o than_o their_o salvation_n thus_o continue_v to_o preach_v the_o space_n of_o a_o hour_n we_o desire_v they_o to_o propound_v some_o question_n which_o be_v these_o follow_a before_o i_o name_v they_o it_o may_v not_o be_v amiss_o to_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o the_o word_n which_o visible_o appear_v especial_o in_o one_o of_o they_o who_o in_o hear_v these_o thing_n about_o sin_n and_o hell_n and_o jesus_n christ_n pour_v out_o many_o tear_n and_o show_v much_o affliction_n without_o affectation_n of_o be_v see_v desire_v rather_o to_o conceal_v his_o grief_n which_o as_o be_v gather_v from_o his_o carriage_n the_o lord_n force_v from_o he_o the_o first_o question_n be_v sudden_o propound_v by_o a_o old_a man_n quest_n then_o present_a who_o hear_v faith_n and_o repentance_n preach_v upon_o they_o to_o find_v salvation_n by_o jesus_n christ_n he_o ask_v whether_o it_o be_v not_o too_o late_o for_o such_o a_o old_a man_n as_o he_o who_o be_v near_o death_n to_o repent_v or_o seek_v after_o god_n this_o question_n affect_v we_o not_o a_o little_a with_o compassion_n and_o we_o answ._n hold_v forth_o to_o he_o the_o bible_n and_o tell_v he_o what_o god_n say_v in_o it_o concerning_o such_o as_o be_v hire_v at_o the_o eleven_o hour_n of_o the_o day_n we_o tell_v he_o also_o that_o if_o a_o father_n have_v a_o son_n that_o have_v be_v disobedient_a many_o year_n yet_o if_o at_o last_o that_o son_n fall_v down_o upon_o his_o knee_n and_o weep_v and_o desire_v his_o father_n to_o love_v he_o his_o father_n be_v so_o merciful_a that_o he_o will_v ready_o forgive_v he_o and_o love_v he_o so_o we_o say_v it_o be_v much_o more_o with_o god_n who_o be_v a_o more_o merciful_a father_n to_o those_o who_o he_o have_v make_v than_o any_o father_n can_v be_v to_o his_o rebellious_a child_n who_o he_o have_v beget_v if_o they_o fall_v down_o and_o weep_v and_o pray_v repent_v and_o desire_v forgiveness_n for_o jesus_n christ_n sake_n and_o we_o far_o add_v that_o look_v as_o if_o a_o father_n do_v call_v after_o his_o child_n to_o return_v and_o repent_v promise_v he_o favour_n the_o child_n may_v then_o be_v sure_a that_o his_o father_n will_v forgive_v he_o so_o we_o tell_v they_o that_o now_o be_v the_o day_n of_o god_n rise_v upon_o they_o and_o that_o now_o the_o lord_n be_v call_v of_o they_o to_o repentance_n and_o that_o he_o have_v send_v we_o for_o that_o end_n to_o preach_v repentance_n for_o the_o remission_n of_o
sin_n and_o that_o therefore_o they_o may_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v favour_n though_o they_o have_v live_v many_o year_n in_o sin_n and_o that_o therefore_o if_o now_o they_o do_v repent_v it_o be_v not_o too_o late_o as_o the_o old_a man_n fear_v but_o if_o they_o do_v not_o come_v when_o they_o be_v thus_o call_v god_n will_v be_v great_o angry_a with_o they_o especial_o consider_v that_o now_o they_o must_v sin_v against_o knowledge_n whereas_o before_o we_o come_v to_o they_o they_o know_v not_o any_o thing_n of_o god_n at_o all_o have_v spend_v much_o time_n in_o clear_v up_o the_o first_o question_n the_o quest_n next_o they_o propound_v upon_o our_o answer_n be_v this_o viz._n how_o come_v the_o english_a to_o differ_v so_o much_o from_o the_o indian_n in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o jesus_n christ_n see_v they_o have_v all_o at_o first_o but_o one_o father_n we_o confess_v that_o it_o be_v true_a that_o at_o first_o we_o have_v all_o but_o one_o answ._n father_n but_o after_o that_o our_o first_o father_n fall_v he_o have_v divers_a child_n some_o be_v bad_a and_o some_o good_a those_o that_o be_v bad_a will_v not_o take_v his_o counsel_n but_o depart_v from_o he_o and_o from_o god_n and_o those_o god_n leave_v alone_o in_o sin_n and_o ignorance_n but_o other_o do_v regard_v he_o and_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n by_o he_o and_o those_o know_v god_n and_o so_o the_o difference_n arise_v at_o first_o that_o some_o together_o with_o their_o posterity_n know_v god_n and_o other_o do_v not_o and_o so_o we_o tell_v they_o it_o be_v at_o this_o day_n for_o like_o as_o if_o a_o old_a man_n a_o age_a father_n among_o they_o have_v many_o child_n if_o some_o of_o they_o be_v rebellious_a against_o the_o counsel_n of_o the_o father_n he_o shut_v they_o out_o of_o door_n and_o let_v they_o go_v and_o regard_v they_o not_o unless_o they_o return_v and_o repent_v but_o other_o that_o will_v be_v rule_v by_o he_o they_o learn_v by_o he_o and_o come_v to_o know_v his_o mind_n so_o we_o say_v english_a man_n seek_v god_n dwell_v in_o his_o house_n hear_v his_o word_n pray_v to_o god_n instruct_v their_o child_n out_o of_o god_n book_n hence_o they_o come_v to_o know_v god_n but_o indian_n forefather_n be_v a_o stubborn_a and_o rebellious_a child_n and_o will_v not_o hear_v the_o word_n do_v not_o care_n to_o pray_v nor_o to_o teach_v their_o child_n and_o hence_o indian_n that_o now_o be_v do_v not_o know_v god_n at_o all_o and_o so_o must_v continue_v unless_o they_o repent_v and_o return_v to_o god_n and_o pray_v and_o teach_v their_o child_n what_o they_o now_o may_v learn_v but_o withal_o we_o tell_v they_o that_o many_o english_a man_n do_v not_o know_v god_n but_o be_v like_o to_o kitchamakins_n drunken_a indian_n nor_o be_v we_o willing_a to_o tell_v they_o the_o story_n of_o the_o scatter_n of_o noabs_n child_n since_o the_o flood_n and_o thereby_o to_o show_v they_o how_o the_o indian_n come_v to_o be_v so_o ignorant_a because_o it_o be_v too_o difficult_a and_o the_o history_n of_o the_o bible_n be_v reserve_v for_o they_o if_o god_n will_v to_o be_v open_v at_o a_o more_o convenient_a season_n in_o their_o own_o tongue_n their_o three_o question_n be_v how_o may_v we_o come_v to_o serve_v quest_n god_n we_o ask_v he_o that_o do_v propound_v it_o whether_o he_o do_v desire_v indeed_o to_o serve_v he_o and_o he_o say_v yes_o hereupon_o we_o say_v first_o answ._n they_o must_v lament_v their_o blindness_n and_o sinfulness_n that_o they_o can_v serve_v he_o and_o their_o ignorance_n of_o god_n book_n which_o we_o point_v to_o which_o direct_v how_o to_o serve_v he_o second_o that_o they_o can_v not_o serve_v god_n but_o by_o seek_v forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o power_n against_o their_o sin_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v preach_v to_o they_o three_o that_o look_v as_o a_o indian_a child_n if_o he_o will_v serve_v his_o father_n he_o must_v first_o know_v his_o father_n will_n and_o love_v his_o father_n too_o or_o else_o he_o can_v never_o serve_v he_o but_o if_o he_o do_v know_v his_o father_n will_n and_o love_v he_o than_o he_o will_v serve_v he_o and_o then_o if_o he_o shall_v not_o do_v some_o thing_n as_o his_o father_n command_v he_o and_o yet_o afterwards_o grieve_v for_o it_o upon_o his_o knee_n before_o his_o father_n his_o father_n will_v pity_v and_o accept_v he_o so_o we_o tell_v they_o it_o be_v with_o god_n they_o must_v labour_v to_o know_v his_o will_n and_o love_n god_n and_o then_o they_o will_v be_v willing_a to_o serve_v he_o and_o if_o they_o shall_v then_o sin_v yet_o grieve_v for_o it_o before_o god_n he_o will_v pity_v and_o accept_v of_o they_o their_o four_o question_n be_v how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o sea_n water_n be_v salt_n and_o the_o land_n water_n fresh_a quest_n it_o be_v so_o from_o the_o wonderful_a work_n of_o god_n as_o why_o be_v strawberry_n sweet_a and_o cranberry_n sour_a there_o be_v no_o reason_n but_o the_o answ._n beaâ—berries_n wonderful_a work_n of_o god_n that_o make_v they_o so_o our_o study_n be_v chief_o to_o make_v they_o acknowledge_v god_n in_o his_o work_n yet_o we_o give_v they_o also_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o from_o natural_a cause_n which_o the_o less_o understand_v yet_o do_v understand_v somewhat_o appear_v by_o their_o usual_a sign_n of_o approve_v what_o they_o understand_v their_o five_o question_n be_v that_o if_o the_o water_n be_v high_a than_o quest_n the_o earth_n how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o it_o do_v not_o overflow_v all_o the_o earth_n we_o still_o hold_v god_n before_o they_o and_o show_v that_o this_o must_v answ._n needs_o be_v the_o wonderful_a work_n of_o god_n and_o we_o take_v a_o apple_n and_o thereby_o show_v they_o how_o the_o earth_n and_o water_n make_v one_o round_a globe_n like_o that_o apple_n and_o how_o the_o sun_n move_v about_o it_o and_o then_o show_v they_o how_o god_n make_v a_o great_a hole_n or_o ditch_n into_o which_o he_o put_v the_o water_n of_o the_o sea_n so_o that_o though_o it_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n and_o therefore_o above_o the_o earth_n yet_o we_o tell_v they_o that_o by_o make_v so_o deep_a a_o hole_n the_o water_n be_v keep_v within_o compass_n that_o they_o can_v not_o overflow_v just_a as_o if_o indian_n make_v a_o hole_n to_o put_v in_o much_o water_n the_o water_n can_v overflow_v nor_o run_v abroad_o which_o they_o will_v if_o they_o have_v no_o such_o hole_n so_o it_o be_v with_o god_n it_o be_v his_o mighty_a power_n that_o dig_v a_o hole_n for_o all_o sea-water_n as_o a_o deep_a ditch_n and_o thereby_o god_n keep_v they_o in_o from_o overflow_a the_o whole_a earth_n which_o otherwise_o will_v quick_o drown_v all_o they_o have_v spend_v much_o conference_n among_o themselves_o about_o quest_n these_o question_n and_o the_o night_n hasten_v we_o desire_v they_o to_o propound_v some_o other_o question_n or_o if_o not_o we_o will_v ask_v they_o some_o hereupon_o one_o of_o they_o ask_v we_o if_o a_o man_n have_v commit_v adultery_n or_o steal_v any_o good_n and_o the_o sachim_n do_v not_o punish_v he_o nor_o by_o any_o law_n be_v he_o punish_v if_o also_o he_o restore_v the_o good_n he_o have_v steal_v what_o then_o whether_o be_v not_o all_o well_o now_o mean_v that_o if_o god_n law_n be_v break_v and_o no_o man_n punish_v he_o for_o it_o that_o then_o no_o punishment_n shall_v come_v from_o god_n for_o it_o and_o as_o if_o by_o restore_v again_o a_o amends_o be_v make_v to_o god_n although_o man_n be_v not_o offend_v for_o such_o sin_n yet_o god_n be_v angry_a answ._n and_o his_o anger_n burn_v like_o fire_n against_o all_o sinner_n and_o here_o we_o set_v out_o the_o holiness_n and_o terror_n of_o god_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o least_o sin_n yet_o if_o such_o a_o sinner_n with_o who_o god_n be_v angry_a fly_n to_o jesus_n christ_n and_o repent_v and_o seek_v for_o mercy_n and_o pardon_n for_o christ_n sake_n that_o then_o god_n will_v forgive_v and_o pity_v upon_o the_o hear_n of_o which_o answer_v he_o that_o propound_v the_o question_n draw_v somewhat_o back_o and_o hang_v down_o his_o head_n as_o a_o man_n smite_v to_o the_o very_a heart_n with_o his_o eye_n ready_a to_o drop_v and_o within_o a_o little_a while_n after_o break_v out_o into_o a_o complaint_n i_o little_o know_v jesus_n christ_n otherwise_o he_o think_v he_o shall_v seek_v he_o better_o we_o therefore_o tell_v he_o that_o look_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o morning_n at_o first_o there_o be_v but_o a_o
