have_v both_o pay_v unto_o himself_o that_o which_o be_v say_v before_o concern_v the_o seed_n sow_o in_o a_o purify_a mind_n which_o be_v not_o perceive_v until_o it_o be_v corrupt_v and_o growth_n forth_o the_o very_a same_o thing_n do_v more_o clear_o appear_v from_o the_o similtude_n of_o the_o field_n sow_o with_o corn._n chap._n xxx_o in_o a_o man_n from_o who_o sin_n be_v take_v away_o therewith_o and_o it_o be_v thus_o prove_v because_o that_o same_o hatred_n of_o sin_n proceed_v not_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o mind_n nor_o from_o regeneration_n in_o as_o much_o as_o there_o be_v in_o this_o state_n still_o leave_v the_o old_a life_n to_o which_o belong_v judgement_n and_o condemnation_n and_o be_v that_o that_o must_v die_v the_o death_n whereas_o other_o viz._n such_o as_o be_v transplant_v into_o god_n do_v hate_n sin_n out_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o their_o mind_n and_o out_o of_o regeneration_n for_o the_o new_a life_n which_o be_v in_o they_o will_v not_o bear_v sin_n nor_o suffer_v it_o to_o be_v and_o that_o not_o because_o of_o that_o torment_n of_o conscience_n or_o loss_n of_o salvation_n but_o out_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n by_o reason_n of_o its_o tenderness_n and_o its_o holy_a temper_n for_o this_o nature_n can_v endure_v nothing_o that_o be_v strange_a for_o it_o be_v the_o newman_n christ_n jesus_n who_o be_v god_n himself_o hence_o
be_v it_o that_o these_o two_o sort_n do_v thus_o differ_v one_o from_o another_o the_o first_o be_v when_o some_o be_v the_o enemy_n of_o sin_n for_o their_o own_o sake_n when_o as_o by_o nature_n they_o be_v still_o friend_n but_o the_o other_o and_o second_o sort_n be_v when_o it_o have_v lose_v ipseity_n or_o propriety_n and_o hate_v sin_n by_o nature_n for_o such_o be_v in_o god_n and_o be_v new_a creature_n have_v attain_v a_o new_a sense_n which_o be_v spiritual_a whereas_o the_o former_a sort_n be_v still_o natural_a and_o have_v a_o natural_a sense_n whence_o they_o wear_v about_o they_o not_o the_o new_a but_o the_o old_a creature_n yet_o they_o be_v well_o enough_o in_o their_o own_o kind_n and_o their_o state_n or_o condition_n precede_v the_o latter_a or_o second_o and_o wait_v for_o it_o the_o lord_n be_v merciful_a to_o we_o for_o this_o last_o state_n be_v not_o the_o result_n of_o our_o study_n and_o endeavour_n but_o of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n a_o mâ—n_z come_v thereunto_o not_o active_o but_o passive_o and_o it_o behoove_v that_o god_n only_o be_v the_o workmaster_n therein_o tauler_n say_v keep_v thyself_o passive_a and_o god_n will_v be_v active_a and_o then_o the_o thing_n will_v not_o be_v impossible_a because_o god_n himself_o will_v do_v it_o and_o transfer_v a_o man_n to_o that_o one_o scope_n or_o end_n viz._n god_n himself_o and_o all_o this_o by_z and_o through_o christ_n jesus_n our_o lord_n who_o be_v just_a suffer_v for_o the_o unjust_a that_o he_o may_v bring_v we_o unto_o god_n and_o that_o be_v it_o which_o be_v promise_v in_o the_o prophet_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v prepare_v such_o a_o people_n as_o shall_v declare_v his_o praise_n which_o be_v write_v in_o luke_n 1.71_o salvation_n from_o our_o enemy_n and_o that_o which_o paul_n say_v tâ—_n condemn_v sin_n through_o sin_n it_o be_v a_o great_a bitterness_n to_o i_o yet_o it_o be_v a_o sword_n that_o pierce_v into_o my_o breast_n no_o man_n can_v know_v what_o it_o be_v unless_o he_o have_v lie_v in_o it_o but_o to_o all_o the_o rest_n who_o yet_o stand_v in_o the_o labour_n of_o the_o law_n those_o say_n be_v as_o sweet_a as_o honey_n but_o to_o i_o another_o as_o god_n also_o have_v bear_v with_o we_o and_o still_o bear_v with_o we_o and_o even_o as_o other_o also_o do_v bear_v with_o we_o yet_o it_o be_v chief_o to_o be_v endeavour_v that_o we_o daily_o become_v less_o and_o less_o troublesome_a unto_o other_o and_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n we_o shall_v have_v soundness_n of_o conscience_n we_o ought_v to_o be_v brethren_n and_o not_o accuse_v diffame_v or_o contemn_v one_o another_o for_o any_o shame_n or_o spot_n and_o if_o any_o one_o can_v do_v or_o have_v this_o from_o the_o very_a foundation_n yet_o he_o ought_v to_o suppress_v these_o thing_n in_o himself_o and_o to_o have_v a_o care_n lest_o they_o break_v forth_o again_o and_o then_o will_v the_o conscience_n be_v endue_v with_o no_o bitterness_n and_o the_o state_n of_o the_o man_n will_v be_v well_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v troublesome_a to_o one_o another_o in_o gesture_n or_o word_n or_o work_n or_o thought_n but_o every_o where_o to_o seek_v peace_n in_o love_n and_o because_o now_o it_o be_v tell_v we_o concern_v affliction_n that_o we_o must_v be_v subject_v thereunto_o in_o what_o manner_n soever_o it_o rush_v in_o upon_o we_o it_o be_v to_o be_v accept_v as_o from_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o a_o man_n in_o affliction_n aught_o to_o abstain_v from_o all_o delight_v derive_v from_o the_o creature_n we_o must_v begin_v to_o cut_v off_o our_o member_n before_o we_o come_v at_o the_o heart_n sin_n must_v be_v starve_v to_o death_n and_o as_o it_o be_v usual_a to_o deal_v with_o a_o fever_n neither_o food_n be_v to_o be_v give_v to_o it_o and_o wherever_o it_o will_v put_v forth_o itself_o it_o be_v to_o be_v hinder_v from_o grow_v yea_o also_o its_o life_n which_o be_v so_o strong_o manifest_v in_o we_o be_v by_o the_o help_n of_o conscience_n to_o be_v suppress_v until_o it_o come_v to_o its_o death_n if_o any_o one_o will_v serious_o possess_v these_o thing_n let_v he_o daily_o call_v upon_o god_n that_o he_o will_v be_v present_a with_o he_o in_o they_o when_o he_o the_o author_n be_v sometime_o ask_v what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v with_o those_o person_n who_o persecute_v other_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o faith_n answer_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o love_v even_o our_o persecutor_n and_o add_v this_o similitude_n if_o any_o one_o by_o great_a and_o daily_a travail_n desire_v to_o go_v to_o cologne_n by_o a_o journey_n or_o way_n very_o difficult_a and_o troublesome_a and_o some_o body_n shall_v by_o chance_n come_v and_o put_v this_o traveller_n into_o a_o coach_n and_o so_o carry_v he_o to_o cologne_n certain_o to_o such_o a_o one_o he_o ought_v to_o return_v the_o great_a thanks_o but_o not_o hatred_n chap._n xxxi_o concern_v the_o exercise_n of_o prayer_n the_o author_n be_v ask_v concern_v prayer_n answer_v i_o every_o day_n appear_v thrice_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o prayer_n be_v ask_v whither_o by_o the_o voice_n of_o his_o mouth_n he_o answer_v yes_o viz._n in_o the_o morning_n at_o noon_n and_o at_o night_n be_v ask_v whither_o he_o do_v so_o by_o reason_n of_o all_o those_o sin_n which_o press_v he_o down_o with_o the_o heavy_a care_n or_o anxiety_n and_o which_o be_v in_o he_o most_o displease_v to_o god_n he_o answer_v yes_o but_o say_v he_o such_o representation_n be_v always_o set_v before_o my_o â—â—es_n that_o i_o may_v appear_v pure_a and_o that_o do_v keep_v i_o from_o sin_v moreover_o i_o always_o have_v my_o mind_n lift_v up_o to_o god_n in_o my_o labour_n that_o i_o may_v diligent_o observe_v the_o very_a bottom_n of_o my_o heart_n nor_o will_v i_o let_v my_o hand_n be_v free_a from_o labour_n if_o i_o have_v wander_v or_o err_v any_o where_o or_o have_v do_v any_o thing_n that_o i_o know_v to_o be_v unjust_a i_o be_v not_o hear_v but_o reject_v of_o the_o lord_n therefore_o i_o be_v still_o endeavour_v that_o i_o may_v always_o appear_v pure_a and_o pure_a if_o i_o intend_v to_o be_v hear_v of_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v exceed_o serious_o and_o diligent_o exercise_v himself_o in_o prayer_n if_o he_o intend_v to_o be_v advance_v in_o the_o lord_n for_o paul_n say_v that_o man_n ought_v to_o pray_v in_o every_o place_n lift_v up_o pure_a hand_n without_o wrath_n and_o contention_n viz._n lest_o that_o our_o conscience_n shall_v accuse_v we_o or_o our_o cogitation_n excuse_v themselves_o teach_v we_o to_o pray_v by_o how_o much_o great_a the_o affliction_n be_v by_o so_o much_o the_o more_o pierce_a will_n the_o prayer_n be_v we_o be_v to_o endeavour_v not_o to_o seem_v or_o profess_v ourselves_o otherwise_o before_o man_n than_o we_o profess_v ourselves_o before_o god_n for_o man_n before_o man_n seem_v to_o be_v somewhat_o when_o yet_o before_o god_n they_o be_v still_o as_o a_o nothing_o in_o the_o bottom_n and_o consequent_o they_o deceive_v themselves_o chap._n xxxii_o a_o man_n ought_v not_o open_o to_o reveal_v his_o divine_a exercise_n viz._n that_o by_o which_o he_o be_v exercise_v by_o god_n some_o be_v natural_o so_o close_o of_o heart_n that_o they_o be_v willing_o silent_a and_o reveal_v to_o no_o man_n their_o divine_a exercise_n that_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o be_v please_v to_o god_n other_o be_v natural_o open_a of_o heart_n so_o as_o they_o willing_o discover_v to_o any_o one_o their_o divine_a exercise_n and_o their_o whole_a mind_n and_o that_o be_v very_o displease_v to_o god_n such_o therefore_o be_v to_o endeavour_v and_o study_v to_o gâ—t_o close_a heart_n and_o let_v they_o learn_v to_o bridle_v their_o tongue_n and_o beg_v most_o bitter_a affliction_n so_o as_o his_o heart_n become_v as_o it_o be_v ground_n to_o powder_n for_o he_o that_o be_v not_o yet_o come_v to_o this_o poverty_n but_o be_v still_o rich_a can_v hold_v his_o tongue_n he_o that_o handle_v himself_o severe_o that_o he_o may_v break_v his_o nature_n and_o become_v harsh_a to_o his_o own_o selâ—_n can_v difficult_o compassionate_v other_o who_o he_o see_v not_o to_o be_v as_o severe_a as_o he_o be_v himself_o and_o therefore_o he_o so_o drive_v other_o that_o they_o may_v be_v like_o he_o in_o state_n or_o condition_n and_o he_o be_v unmerciful_a nor_o also_o can_v he_o be_v silent_a although_o sometime_o he_o have_v his_o conscience_n press_v down_o with_o solicitous_a care_n because_o his_o heart_n be_v not_o yet_o pierce_v quite_o through_o nor_o be_v dig_v down_o to_o its_o very_a bottom_n nor_o utter_o break_v with_o bitter_a affliction_n but_o he_o that_o have_v hâ—s_a heart_n ground_n to_o power_n and_o deep_o wound_v with_o great_a and_o bitter_a misery_n he_o can_v hold_v his_o tongue_n yea_o he_o choose_v rather_o to_o be_v silent_a although_o sometime_o necessity_n shall_v require_v it_o otherwise_o so_o miserable_a a_o manner_n that_o at_o the_o last_o they_o grow_v whole_o ignorant_a which_o way_n to_o take_v or_o turn_v themselves_o for_o so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n be_v still_o hold_v captive_a in_o himself_o by_o any_o kind_n of_o iniquity_n whatsoever_o and_o be_v in_o the_o inward_o of_o his_o soul_n private_o accuse_v of_o it_o and_o yet_o he_o give_v no_o due_a heed_n thereunto_o be_v ignorant_a how_o he_o may_v get_v free_a therefrom_o and_o study_v and_o endeavour_v what_o he_o can_v to_o defend_v it_o either_o by_o scripture-saying_n or_o by_o some_o other_o appear_v no_o more_o with_o its_o own_o proper_a life_n but_o remain_v eternal_o cast_v off_o with_o the_o death_n and_o curse_n thereof_o but_o that_o nature_n which_o they_o call_v purge_v and_o dead_a to_o its_o reason_n in_o my_o opinion_n do_v indeed_o only_o depend_v on_o principle_n of_o understanding_n and_o science_n but_o not_o on_o truth_n itself_o for_o hitherto_o it_o have_v not_o
