a_o extract_n of_o a_o letter_n from_o york_n date_v the_o 31._o of_o decemb._n 1659._o concerning_o the_o lord_n fairfax_n raise_v that_o county_n in_o arm_n against_o illegal_a tax_n and_o freequarter_n and_o for_o the_o freedom_n of_o parliament_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o year_n 1648._o have_v do_v with_o our_o particular_a concernment_n give_v i_o leave_v to_o acquaint_v you_o in_o brief_a with_o matter_n more_o public_a and_o perhaps_o very_o strange_a unto_o you_o the_o gentry_n of_o this_o county_n be_v universal_o up_o under_o the_o conduct_n of_o the_o lord_n fairfax_n such_o a_o rise_n on_o a_o sudden_a have_v not_o be_v know_v that_o which_o first_o occasion_v it_o be_v freequarter_n and_o the_o tax_n that_o have_v be_v late_o impose_v upon_o this_o county_n by_o military_a power_n to_o which_o the_o gentry_n of_o these_o part_n be_v unwilling_a to_o stoop_v be_v loath_a to_o receive_v law_n from_o the_o sword_n have_v draw_v their_o sword_n to_o maintain_v the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n which_o declare_v that_o no_o tax_n be_v impose_v upon_o the_o people_n but_o by_o consent_n in_o parliament_n and_o the_o gentry_n in_o these_o part_n explain_v to_o be_v by_o consent_n in_o a_o full_a parliament_n the_o manner_n of_o their_o rise_n be_v in_o three_o division_n the_o lord_n fairfax_n for_o the_o west-riding_n of_o the_o county_n have_v his_o rendezvous_n at_o leeds_n where_o multitude_n of_o people_n resort_n unto_o he_o both_o horse_n and_o foot_n and_o the_o trade_n of_o clothing_n be_v dead_a by_o reason_n of_o the_o war_n with_o spain_n make_v those_o part_n rise_v in_o abundance_n to_o do_v any_o thing_n for_o the_o have_n of_o a_o free_a parliament_n which_o they_o think_v will_v procure_v the_o open_n of_o trade_n again_o there_o be_v come_v unto_o the_o lord_n fairfax_n assistance_n also_o three_o troop_n of_o horse_n of_o colonel_n lilburn_n regiment_n under_o the_o command_n of_o major_n smithson_n captain_n strangwayes_n and_o captain_n wilkinson_n the_o force_n in_o the_o north-riding_n be_v raise_v by_o colonel_n hugh_n bethel_n with_o one_o eye_n and_o sir_n francis_n boynton_n and_o the_o force_n in_o the_o east-riding_n be_v raise_v by_o sir_n henry_n cholmely_n and_o other_o gentleman_n in_o that_o ride_v these_o two_o last_o division_n at_o a_o rendezvous_n yesterday_o have_v fifteen_o hundred_o horse_n complete_o arm_v and_o this_o day_n or_o upon_o monday_n do_v meet_v the_o lord_n fairfax_n at_o the_o general_n rendezvous_n i_o have_v endeavour_v to_o understand_v the_o bottom_n of_o this_o business_n and_o do_v perceive_v they_o intend_v to_o declare_v upon_o these_o head_n follow_v i._n for_o the_o restore_n of_o this_o parliament_n to_o the_o due_a freedom_n which_o it_o enjoy_v in_o the_o year_n 1648._o before_o it_o be_v garble_v by_o the_o army_n ii_o that_o the_o soldier_n of_o the_o army_n may_v have_v their_o arrear_n pay_v and_o that_o for_o the_o future_a military_a force_n may_v be_v put_v into_o such_o hand_n as_o may_v be_v of_o public_a interest_n and_o likely_a to_o submit_v to_o civil_a authority_n iii_o to_o remove_v the_o present_a illegal_a assessment_n now_o in_o levy_v upon_o the_o county_n and_o iv._o to_o prevent_v the_o quaker_n anabaptist_n etc._n etc._n from_o meeting_n at_o their_o rendezvous_n who_o do_v intend_v as_o we_o be_v inform_v to_o join_v with_o the_o lord_n lambert_n force_n on_o the_o three_o day_n of_o january_n the_o lord_n lambert_n be_v upon_o a_o speedy_a march_n southward_o from_o newcastle_n where_o he_o have_v leave_v ten_o company_n of_o foot_n and_o two_o troop_n of_o horse_n to_o secure_v it_o and_o the_o report_n go_v that_o general_n monk_n will_v march_v after_o he_o but_o we_o have_v not_o the_o certainty_n of_o it_o the_o lord_n lambert_n horse_n many_o of_o his_o foot_n we_o expect_v they_o at_o witherby_n the_o second_o of_o january_n and_o various_a be_v the_o opinion_n what_o he_o will_v do_v some_o think_v he_o will_v not_o trust_v to_o indemnity_n from_o above_o shall_v it_o be_v grant_v unto_o he_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v conceive_v that_o since_o the_o quaker_n etc._n etc._n do_v prepare_v for_o a_o conjunction_n with_o he_o that_o he_o will_v declare_v for_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n and_o by_o the_o help_n of_o the_o garrison_n of_o hull_n arm_n and_o array_n those_o man_n in_o hope_n of_o which_o the_o papist_n do_v not_o a_o little_a rejoice_v but_o other_o think_v that_o he_o will_v hold_v those_o people_n too_o narrow_a a_o interest_n to_o build_v so_o great_a a_o undertake_n upon_o have_v monk_n behind_o he_o the_o lord_n fairfax_n on_o the_o flank_n and_o the_o southern_a army_n if_o real_a against_o he_o in_o the_o front_n and_o therefore_o that_o he_o will_v rather_o declare_v to_o join_v with_o the_o lord_n fairfax_n for_o the_o restitution_n of_o the_o member_n in_o 1648._o and_o rather_o receive_v indemnity_n from_o they_o then_o from_o the_o present_a parliament_n one_o of_o those_o two_o in_o all_o likelihood_n he_o will_v be_v constrain_v to_o do_v if_o he_o do_v not_o submit_v unless_o he_o intend_v to_o go_v by_o to_o hasten_v up_o to_o london_n whereas_o we_o now_o hear_v he_o expect_v to_o find_v the_o army_n as_o pliable_a to_o his_o design_n as_o when_o he_o leave_v they_o postscript_n i_o forget_v to_o acquaint_v you_o that_o the_o irish_a brigade_n who_o have_v refuse_v to_o receive_v order_n from_o the_o lord_n lambert_n have_v send_v a_o very_a civil_a message_n to_o the_o lord_n fairfax_n their_o old_a general_n and_o there_o be_v a_o right_a understanding_n between_o they_o as_o i_o be_o tell_v we_o expect_v hourly_o to_o hear_v that_o colonel_n rossiter_n be_v up_o in_o lincolnshire_n it_o be_v say_v that_o that_o county_n darbyshire_n lancashire_n and_o cheshire_n will_v join_v in_o association_n with_o yorkshire_n london_n print_v in_o the_o year_n 1659._o jan_n
