a_o true_a account_n of_o the_o irregular_a proceed_n at_o gvildhall_n about_o the_o swear_v the_o two_o pretend_a sheriff_n mr._n north_n and_o mr._n rich._n september_n 28._o 1682_o the_o last_o night_n my_o lord_n mayor_n issue_v out_o ticket_n to_o the_o alderman_n in_o these_o word_n sir_n your_o worship_n be_v desire_v to_o be_v at_o a_o court_n of_o alderman_n at_o guild-hall_n on_o thursday_n next_o at_o nine_o of_o the_o clock_n in_o the_o forenoon_n in_o your_o violet_n gown_n and_o cloak_n be_v the_o twenty_o eight_o of_o september_n according_o several_a alderman_n appear_v at_o guildhall_n and_o it_o be_v the_o day_n appoint_v for_o the_o swear_v of_o sheriff_n they_o attend_v thomas_n papillon_n and_o john_n dubois_n esquire_n into_o the_o guild-hall_n at_o the_o hour_n appoint_v by_o the_o lord_n mayor_n which_o they_o find_v guard_v by_o foot-company_n of_o the_o trained-band_n a_o thing_n express_o contrary_a to_o the_o english_a constitution_n which_o have_v be_v jealous_a of_o nothing_o more_o than_o the_o preserve_a election_n free_a from_o force_n or_o terror_n some_o whereof_o be_v post_v at_o the_o door_n and_o present_v their_o musket_n but_o yet_o there_o be_v no_o refusal_n of_o entrance_n but_o rather_o a_o open_n of_o the_o file_n and_o some_o respect_n show_v so_o all_o the_o aforesaid_a alderman_n pass_v into_o the_o council-chamber_n where_o have_v stay_v a_o little_a while_n and_o suppose_v my_o lord_n mayor_n may_v go_v up_o to_o the_o husting_n direct_o they_o go_v down_o into_o the_o hall_n towards_o the_o hustings-door_n and_o there_o abide_v some_o time_n attend_v his_o lordship_n come_v the_o soldier_n with_o respect_n give_v way_n but_o lieutenant_n colonel_n quiney_n who_o be_v absent_a at_o their_o entry_n come_v up_o to_o they_o very_o much_o concern_v and_o make_v several_a turn_n without_o speak_v to_o they_o but_o command_v the_o soldier_n several_a time_n to_o stand_v to_o their_o arm_n and_o so_o withdraw_v but_o after_o a_o quarter_n of_o a_o hour_n he_o come_v back_o again_o and_o command_v the_o soldier_n to_o face_n about_o and_o so_o alter_v their_o figure_n and_o to_o advance_v so_o as_o to_o encompass_v or_o imprison_v the_o alderman_n for_o there_o be_v not_o six_o foot_n square_v leave_v they_o to_o stand_v upon_o whereupon_o quiney_n say_v to_o the_o alderman_n i_o have_v a_o command_n from_o the_o lieutenancy_n to_o keep_v the_o hall_n clear_a and_o suffer_v none_o to_o be_v here_o till_o my_o lord_n mayor_n come_v upon_o this_o several_z aldermen_z demand_v to_o see_v the_o order_n be_v ready_a to_o obey_v all_o legal_a command_n and_o ask_v he_o whether_o he_o do_v not_o know_v that_o they_o be_v magistrate_n of_o the_o city_n and_o can_v believe_v it_o reach_v they_o to_o which_o he_o answer_v i_o have_v none_o but_o it_o be_v with_o the_o major_n of_o the_o regiment_n and_o i_o do_v know_v you_o and_o you_o must_v remove_v further_o the_o alderman_n declare_v they_o be_v summon_v to_o wait_v on_o my_o lord_n mayor_n at_o the_o guild-hall_n and_o there_o attend_v in_o all_o peaceableness_n whereupon_o he_o withdraw_v again_o for_o some_o time_n but_o return_v say_v gentlemen_z you_o must_v withdraw_v i_o have_v a_o command_n to_o require_v it_o but_o be_v again_o demand_v to_o show_v his_o warrant_n or_o order_n he_o answer_v in_o a_o great_a heat_n that_o he_o will_v show_v none_o nor_o to_o none_o such_o as_o they_o then_o lay_v hand_n first_o on_o sir_n p._n w_n shoulder_z who_o stand_v next_o to_o he_o he_o say_v sir_n you_o must_v remove_v and_o call_v on_o his_o soldier_n to_o advance_v close_o to_o the_o bar_n so_o as_o to_o thrust_v they_o away_o sir_n p._n w._n only_o reply_v to_o he_o we_o be_v in_o a_o lawful_a place_n and_o on_o our_o duty_n desire_v the_o other_o alderman_n that_o be_v present_a and_o the_o soldier_n to_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o violence_n offer_v and_o sure_o it_o be_v such_o as_o be_v scarce_o to_o be_v parallel_v especial_o in_o a_o well-governed_a city_n that_o their_o civil_a magistrate_n shall_v be_v so_o affront_v in_o their_o own_o room_n but_o quiney_n answer_v he_o care_v not_o for_o witness_n he_o will_v justify_v what_o he_o do_v have_v order_n from_o the_o lieutenancy_n so_o to_o do_v then_o he_o take_v hold_v on_o sir_n j._n l._n who_o be_v lean_v on_o the_o bar_n and_o with_o very_o great_a and_o repeat_v violence_n pull_v he_o from_o off_o the_o step_n and_o have_v like_a to_o have_v throw_v he_o down_o who_o demand_v still_o by_o what_o order_n he_o do_v it_o and_o that_o he_o will_v show_v the_o same_o but_o he_o reply_v again_o he_o will_v show_v none_o then_o he_o take_v hold_v of_o sir_n j._n s._n and_o sir_n t._n g._n and_o ald._n c._n who_o likewise_o demand_v to_o see_v his_o order_n be_v answer_v to_o the_o same_o purpose_n as_o aforesaid_a hereupon_o all_o the_o alderman_n desire_v the_o soldier_n who_o be_v present_a to_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o assault_n and_o misdemeanour_n of_o the_o say_v quiney_n they_o withdraw_v into_o the_o west_n part_n of_o the_o hall_n where_o divers_a person_n be_v walk_v viz._n withers_n wiseman_n nicols_n steventon_n etc._n etc._n some_o of_o they_o be_v of_o the_o lieutenancy_n and_o other_o not_o to_o who_o it_o be_v say_v do_v not_o you_o see_v the_o misdemeanour_n of_o quiney_n but_o they_o instead_o of_o resent_v the_o indignity_n offer_v to_o those_o worthy_a alderman_n who_o have_v serve_v the_o city_n to_o so_o great_a a_o degree_n that_o the_o mouth_n of_o malice_n itself_o may_v be_v stop_v answer_v he_o follow_v but_o the_o order_n of_o the_o lieutenancy_n then_o it_o be_v ask_v they_o be_v acquaintance_n how_o they_o come_v by_o that_o freedom_n in_o the_o hall_n when_o the_o alderman_n be_v so_o ill_o treat_v there_o whereunto_o they_o answer_v they_o be_v of_o the_o lieutenancy_n and_o attend_v the_o come_n of_o my_o lord_n mayor_n the_o which_o the_o alderman_n tell_v they_o they_o also_o do_v but_o have_v not_o the_o same_o civil_a treatment_n not_o long_o after_o come_v my_o lord_n mayor_n to_o who_o these_o alderman_n join_v themselves_o and_o go_v up_o out_o of_o the_o great_a hall_n into_o the_o council-chamber_n and_o mr._n papillon_n and_o mr._n dubois_n with_o they_o where_o be_v enter_v the_o first_o word_n my_o lord_n mayor_n say_v be_v these_o viz_o gentleman_n here_o be_v fine_a do_n to_o go_v and_o swear_v sheriff_n and_o i_o not_o present_a whereunto_o sir_n j._n l._n answer_v whoever_o tell_v your_o lordship_n so_o misinform_v your_o lordship_n we_o come_v very_o peaceable_o to_o the_o hall_n to_o perform_v our_o duty_n and_o know_v well_o what_o it_o be_v to_o administer_v a_o oath_n and_o have_v not_o the_o least_o intention_n of_o such_o a_o thing_n but_o to_o lay_v our_o claim_n by_o present_v sheriff_n sir_n r._n c._n also_o tell_v his_o lordship_n he_o ought_v to_o be_v angry_a with_o those_o that_o have_v give_v he_o false_a information_n rather_o than_o with_o those_o he_o be_v misinform_v of_o and_o that_o nothing_o be_v intend_v or_o design_v contrary_a to_o his_o lordship_n frequent_a and_o public_a declaration_n which_o be_v that_o the_o matter_n shall_v be_v determine_v by_o law_n and_o it_o be_v advise_v that_o can_v not_o be_v do_v unless_o mr._n papillon_n and_o mr._n dubois_n do_v present_v themselves_o to_o be_v swear_v whereupon_o his_o lordship_n seem_v to_o rest_v satisfy_v and_o immediate_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o alderman_n with_o the_o other_o sheriff_n come_v in_o mr._n papillon_n and_o mr._n dubois_n present_v themselves_o to_o his_o lordship_n and_o mr._n papillon_n read_v a_o paper_n the_o content_n whereof_o be_v as_o follow_v to_o the_o right_n honourable_a the_o lord_n mayor_z and_o court_n of_o alderman_n the_o humble_a declaration_n of_o thomas_n papillon_n mercer_n and_o john_n dubois_n weaver_n citizen_n of_o london_n our_o absence_n in_o the_o country_n on_o midsummer-day_n last_o and_o for_o some_o time_n before_o and_o since_o and_o our_o be_v personal_o stranger_n to_o and_o no_o way_n appear_v or_o concern_v ourselves_o with_o any_o of_o the_o transaction_n or_o proceed_n then_o or_o since_o use_v in_o the_o choice_n of_o sheriff_n for_o this_o honourable_a city_n and_o county_n of_o middlesex_n for_o the_o ensue_a year_n will_v have_v excuse_v our_o attendance_n upon_o your_o lordship_n and_o this_o honourable_a court_n at_o this_o time_n and_o upon_o this_o occasion_n have_v we_o not_o be_v inform_v by_o divers_a that_o by_o the_o suffrage_n of_o the_o majority_n of_o the_o citizen_n in_o common-hall_n we_o be_v and_o stand_v due_o elect_v sheriff_n for_o this_o city_n and_o the_o county_n of_o middlesex_n for_o the_o ensue_a year_n now_o though_o our_o personal_a vnacquaintance_n with_o the_o proceed_n use_v in_o that_o
