the_o vindication_n of_o sr._n john_n stawell_n remonstrance_n against_o a_o scurrilous_a pamphlet_n write_v by_o mr._n john_n ash_n entitle_v a_o answer_n to_o divers_a scandal_n mention_v in_o the_o humble_a remonstrance_n of_o sr._n john_n stawell_n as_o also_o a_o answer_n to_o a_o petition_n of_o william_n laurence_n of_o edinburgh_n esq_n whereunto_o certain_a reason_n be_v annex_v direct_v stawell_n remonstrance_n against_o a_o scurrilous_a pamphlet_n write_v by_o mr._n john_n ashe_n etc._n etc._n i_o have_v in_o my_o remonstrance_n former_o make_v a_o profession_n to_o fix_v myself_o upon_o that_o truth_n which_o shall_v be_v avow_v upon_o the_o faith_n of_o a_o christian_a and_o honour_n of_o a_o gentleman_n and_o i_o can_v with_o much_o confidence_n affirm_v that_o i_o have_v not_o be_v want_v in_o the_o least_o point_n to_o that_o profession_n and_o i_o engage_v myself_o again_o to_o follow_v the_o same_o course_n in_o the_o ensue_a narrative_a wherein_o when_o i_o shall_v have_v demonstrate_v by_o clear_a proof_n and_o argument_n the_o wicked_a and_o malicious_a practice_n which_o mr._n john_n ash_n have_v use_v against_o i_o thereby_o involve_v i_o in_o those_o great_a calamity_n and_o misery_n which_o i_o have_v undergo_v for_o many_o year_n violate_v that_o private_a tie_n of_o friendship_n which_o he_o pretend_v and_o duty_n of_o a_o person_n public_o entrust_v by_o the_o parliament_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o the_o reader_n will_v believe_v i_o have_v more_o cause_n to_o have_v expect_v that_o mr._n ash_n will_v rather_o have_v acknowledge_v by_o his_o thankfulness_n the_o moderation_n i_o use_v in_o the_o relate_n of_o those_o passage_n wherein_o he_o be_v concern_v in_o my_o remonstrance_n then_o have_v endeavour_v as_o he_o have_v late_o do_v by_o a_o scurrilous_a pamphlet_n publish_v in_o his_o name_n to_o asperse_v i_o with_o the_o write_n of_o many_o fashood_n in_o several_a page_n of_o it_o and_o by_o a_o feign_a discourse_n as_o void_a of_o truth_n as_o of_o civility_n persuade_v the_o reader_n first_o that_o i_o never_o have_v any_o intention_n to_o compound_v upon_o my_o article_n and_o second_o that_o he_o have_v always_o studious_o perform_v the_o office_n of_o a_o faithful_a friend_n unto_o i_o now_o these_o two_o point_n have_v be_v already_o clear_v by_o solemn_a judgement_n in_o two_o great_a and_o honourable_a court_n constitute_v by_o authority_n of_o parliament_n who_o have_v both_o of_o they_o declare_v that_o i_o submit_v to_o a_o composition_n according_a to_o my_o article_n and_o perform_v all_o thing_n which_o be_v on_o my_o part_n requisite_a towards_o my_o obtain_v the_o benefit_n of_o they_o have_v therein_o also_o by_o a_o necessary_a consequence_n resolve_v that_o mr._n ash_n by_o who_o i_o be_v refuse_v to_o be_v admit_v to_o my_o composition_n when_o i_o first_o tender_v it_o have_v not_o perform_v either_o the_o office_n of_o a_o friend_n or_o duty_n of_o a_o public_a person_n towards_o i_o so_o that_o it_o may_v appear_v superfluous_a to_o give_v a_o further_a answer_n to_o it_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n i_o have_v at_o first_o some_o thought_n to_o let_v it_o pass_v as_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o deserve_v not_o the_o trouble_n of_o a_o answer_n yet_o afterwards_o have_v more_o serious_o weigh_v what_o ill_a impression_n so_o many_o shameless_a and_o notorious_a falsehood_n may_v make_v in_o those_o who_o be_v but_o stranger_n unto_o the_o former_a proceed_n in_o my_o cause_n if_o they_o perceive_v they_o pass_v in_o silence_n without_o a_o answer_n to_o the_o great_a prejudice_n of_o truth_n and_o of_o the_o justice_n of_o those_o two_o honourable_a court_n who_o have_v already_o clear_v they_o by_o their_o judgement_n i_o have_v think_v fit_a upon_o these_o ground_n and_o for_o my_o own_o vindication_n from_o those_o scandal_n wherewith_o the_o author_n of_o that_o pamphlet_n have_v therein_o false_o and_o malicious_o asperse_v i_o to_o publish_v a_o exact_a narrative_a of_o all_o his_o act_n in_o relation_n to_o my_o business_n from_o the_o 15_o of_o july_n 1646._o which_o be_v the_o day_n of_o my_o first_o come_n
