sure_o if_o the_o love_n and_o pity_n that_o be_v due_a to_o his_o brother_n will_v not_o move_v he_o the_o consideration_n of_o what_o a_o motive_n it_o be_v to_o his_o own_o forgiveness_n from_o god_n that_o he_o forgive_v other_o shall_v even_o make_v he_o more_o kind_a for_o his_o own_o as_o well_o as_o other_o sake_n which_o if_o he_o be_v not_o we_o must_v needs_o own_o he_o be_v a_o unwelcome_a guest_n when_o he_o be_v of_o so_o contrary_a behaviour_n to_o the_o doctrine_n and_o example_n of_o christ_n which_o to_o be_v of_o as_o it_o be_v offensive_a to_o he_o at_o all_o time_n so_o much_o more_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o memorial_n of_o his_o love_n and_o good_a will_n as_o well_o as_o god_n forgiveness_n to_o we_o through_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o son_n thus_o necessary_a be_v forgiveness_n to_o make_v we_o worthy_a communicant_n as_o well_o as_o it_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o god_n to_o we_o but_o now_o least_o person_n shall_v mistake_v the_o nature_n of_o forgiveness_n though_o few_o or_o none_o there_o be_v but_o what_o will_v own_o the_o duty_n of_o it_o before_o i_o leave_v this_o qualification_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o show_v you_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o forgiveness_n and_o what_o be_v require_v of_o we_o thereby_o as_o 1._o by_o forgiveness_n be_v not_o mean_v a_o bare_a declaration_n thereof_o or_o a_o pray_n to_o god_n to_o forgive_v those_o that_o have_v wrong_v we_o but_o a_o actual_a forgive_n a_o do_v what_o we_o say_v and_o a_o heartiness_n in_o our_o desire_n yea_o it_o contain_v the_o lay_v aside_o the_o thought_n of_o do_v another_o mischief_n as_o well_o as_o the_o forbearance_n of_o a_o revengeful_a act_n for_o he_o that_o think_v and_o wish_v ill_a to_o another_o show_v that_o he_o have_v malice_n in_o his_o heart_n though_o he_o forbear_v to_o execute_v it_o yea_o he_o that_o dare_v not_o do_v another_o a_o mischief_n but_o yet_o desire_v god_n to_o be_v his_o revenger_n according_a to_o his_o imagination_n do_v in_o that_o show_n it_o be_v fear_n or_o something_o else_o that_o restrain_v his_o hand_n but_o his_o heart_n be_v revengeful_a and_o it_o show_v that_o he_o will_v revenge_v if_o he_o may_v and_o so_o can_v be_v say_v to_o forgive_v but_o 2._o by_o forgiveness_n be_v not_o only_o mean_v a_o forbearance_n of_o revenge_v a_o injury_n but_o a_o forgetfulness_n of_o the_o injury_n too_o so_o far_o as_o to_o cease_v from_o revengeful_a thought_n or_o expression_n for_o he_o that_o remember_v a_o wrong_n do_v he_o so_o as_o to_o heighten_v his_o passion_n under_o a_o new_a provocation_n he_o do_v not_o hearty_o forgive_v in_o that_o he_o keep_v the_o seed_n of_o the_o past_a anger_n and_o passion_n still_o lurk_v within_o he_o it_o be_v true_a where_o a_o man_n have_v do_v i_o wrong_n i_o may_v remember_v it_o so_o sar_n as_o to_o take_v care_n to_o avoid_v the_o like_a or_o any_o other_o from_o he_o for_o the_o future_a yet_o though_o by_o way_n of_o caution_n and_o prevention_n a_o man_n may_v remember_v a_o past_a offence_n the_o better_a to_o arm_v and_o defend_v himself_o he_o be_v not_o so_o to_o remember_v it_o as_o to_o make_v it_o a_o addition_n to_o his_o resolution_n of_o revenge_n upon_o a_o second_o offence_n for_o indeed_o so_o to_o do_v be_v not_o to_o put_v out_o the_o fire_n but_o only_o to_o cover_v it_o in_o ash_n but_o 3._o by_o forgiveness_n be_v not_o only_o mean_v a_o act_n or_o state_n of_o inoffensiveness_n towards_o other_o a_o forbearance_n of_o revenge_v a_o injury_n and_o a_o forgetfulness_n of_o it_o so_o far_o as_o to_o cease_v from_o revengeful_a thought_n or_o expression_n but_o also_o a_o readiness_n to_o show_v action_n of_o civility_n and_o kindness_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v due_a from_o we_o even_o to_o those_o that_o trespass_n against_o we_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o i_o be_o not_o oblige_v to_o exercise_v those_o particular_a act_n of_o friendship_n with_o he_o from_o who_o i_o have_v receive_v injury_n and_o be_o still_o like_a to_o receive_v more_o from_o the_o ill_a will_n and_o design_n he_o have_v against_o i_o nor_o do_v the_o duty_n of_o forgiveness_n exclude_v our_o endeavour_n after_o satisfaction_n in_o a_o just_a and_o legal_a way_n yet_o so_o far_o do_v forgiveness_n require_v our_o love_n and_o kindness_n to_o offender_n against_o we_o that_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v exclude_v our_o prayer_n or_o our_o act_n of_o kindness_n to_o they_o as_o they_o be_v man_n though_o we_o can_v own_v they_o as_o friend_n even_o to_o our_o worst_a enemy_n we_o must_v do_v that_o good_a that_o we_o will_v do_v to_o all_o man_n as_o man_n that_o be_v we_o must_v not_o only_o forbear_v to_o deal_v unjust_o or_o cruel_o with_o they_o but_o show_v they_o all_o the_o kindness_n that_o god_n by_o the_o gospel_n and_o common_a rule_n of_o society_n and_o civility_n have_v make_v it_o our_o duty_n to_o show_v and_o especial_o where_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n to_o the_o contrary_a but_o we_o may_v do_v the_o same_o thing_n for_o they_o as_o well_o as_o other_o though_o they_o have_v offend_v we_o we_o must_v not_o see_v they_o starve_v nor_o perish_v for_o want_v of_o our_o relief_n for_o so_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o if_o even_o thy_o enemy_n hunger_n feed_v he_o if_o he_o thirst_v give_v he_o drink_v yea_o where_o we_o may_v we_o be_v to_o overcome_v his_o evil_n with_o our_o good_a rom._n 12.20_o 21._o and_o thus_o i_o have_v show_v in_o several_a of_o the_o qualification_n of_o a_o worthy_a receiver_n or_o communicant_a viz._n 1._o knowledge_n of_o the_o nature_n and_o end_n of_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n 2._o a_o real_a and_o hearty_a desire_n to_o this_o ordinance_n and_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o 3._o repentance_n or_o sincere_a resolution_n of_o amendment_n 4._o charity_n and_o forgiveness_n that_o if_o man_n come_v without_o they_o they_o be_v unprepared_a for_o the_o sacrament_n and_o so_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o
and_o indeed_o beside_o these_o qualification_n of_o a_o worthy_a communicant_a there_o be_v other_o without_o which_o if_o we_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n we_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o such_o as_o faith_n and_o thankfulness_n to_o our_o saviour_n for_o the_o pledge_n of_o his_o love_n but_o these_o be_v grace_n that_o be_v chief_o exercise_v at_o the_o lord_n supper_n i_o shall_v speak_v of_o they_o under_o the_o second_o way_n which_o i_o instance_a whereby_o man_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n unworthy_o viz._n 2d_o way_n when_o they_o behave_v themselves_o disorderly_a or_o unsuitable_o at_o it_o now_o man_n may_v be_v say_v to_o behave_v themselves_o disorderly_a or_o unsuitable_o when_o they_o do_v show_v a_o due_a respect_n to_o what_o they_o be_v do_v but_o either_o allow_v their_o heart_n to_o hanker_v as_o well_o as_o their_o thought_n to_o wander_v after_o the_o world_n or_o sin_n or_o be_v profane_a in_o their_o behaviour_n at_o it_o nay_o i_o may_v safe_o say_v they_o do_v deal_v with_o it_o very_o worthy_o that_o either_o look_v upon_o their_o receive_v it_o to_o be_v little_o more_o than_o a_o common_a or_o ordinary_a eat_v or_o drink_v or_o else_o undervalue_v the_o bread_n and_o wine_n as_o but_z of_o little_a use_n and_o purpose_n it_o be_v true_a the_o bread_n and_o wine_n be_v but_o creature_n as_o our_o church_n term_v they_o they_o be_v but_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o their_o nature_n but_o yet_o as_o they_o be_v institute_v by_o christ_n to_o be_v receive_v in_o remembrance_n of_o hiâ—_n death_n and_o passion_n the_o take_n of_o they_o according_a to_o christ_n institution_n be_v a_o symbol_n or_o sacrament_n of_o our_o take_n and_o eat_v the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o as_o they_o be_v appoint_v by_o christ_n we_o be_v not_o to_o undervalue_v they_o by_o think_v we_o may_v as_o well_o receive_v christ_n and_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n without_o they_o as_o with_o they_o when_o yet_o we_o have_v opportunity_n and_o invitation_n thereto_o which_o indeed_o to_o undervalue_v be_v not_o only_o to_o undervalue_v the_o element_n but_o their_o church_n many_o learned_a man_n think_v they_o can_v easy_o part_v with_o their_o opinion_n or_o belief_n thereof_o however_o if_o it_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n it_o be_v not_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n such_o be_v not_o only_o contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n but_o to_o faith_n also_o for_o as_o to_o faith_n we_o be_v tell_v in_o heb._n 11._o v._o 1._o it_o be_v the_o evidence_n of_o thing_n not_o see_v now_o if_o christ_n be_v corporeal_o present_a if_o the_o bread_n that_o we_o eat_v be_v the_o very_a substantial_a body_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v then_o see_v and_o so_o our_o faith_n be_v a_o evidence_n of_o what_o be_v see_v it_o be_v not_o the_o true_a faith_n in_o that_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o definition_n of_o it_o nay_o further_o this_o sacrament_n cease_v to_o be_v a_o sacrament_n which_o be_v to_o be_v a_o outward_a and_o a_o visible_a sign_n of_o some_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a thing_n if_o so_o be_v that_o after_o consecration_n the_o bread_n and_o wine_n become_v the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n in_o a_o corporeal_a sense_n there_o then_o remain_v no_o outward_a sign_n or_o sacrament_n but_o that_o which_o be_v so_o receive_v he_o not_o only_o as_o one_o shed_v his_o blood_n and_o give_v his_o body_n to_o save_v man_n from_o the_o gild_n and_o punishment_n of_o sin_n but_o from_o sin_n itself_o it_o be_v such_o as_o receive_v he_o as_o a_o king_n to_o rule_v we_o as_o well_o as_o pardon_v and_o save_v we_o yea_o it_o receive_v christ_n body_n and_o blood_n that_o our_o body_n may_v be_v make_v clean_o and_o our_o soul_n wash_v thereby_o yea_o in_o christ_n jesus_n the_o faith_n that_o avail_v be_v a_o work_a faith_n it_o work_v by_o love_n gal._n 5.6_o and_o it_o work_v by_o thankfulness_n too_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o three_o place_n 3._o those_o man_n may_v be_v say_v to_o behave_v themselves_o disorderly_a and_o unsuitable_o at_o the_o sacrament_n and_o so_o indeed_o can_v we_o but_o be_v thankful_a if_o we_o consider_v what_o we_o do_v and_o receive_v in_o this_o ordinance_n we_o feast_v upon_o the_o memorial_n of_o his_o lay_v down_o
to_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n in_o who_o he_o perceive_v malice_n or_o hatred_n to_o reign_v until_o he_o know_v they_o to_o be_v reconcile_v and_o that_o he_o be_v also_o to_o advertise_v that_o none_o presume_v to_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n that_o be_v open_a ill_a liver_n whilst_o they_o be_v so_o yet_o if_o after_o all_o either_o the_o minister_n or_o the_o church_n can_v for_o many_o reason_n keep_v up_o its_o discipline_n or_o what_o be_v worse_o to_o be_v suppose_v do_v neglect_v it_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o a_o make_v worthy_a communicant_n to_o receive_v unworthy_o the_o sacrament_n still_o be_v a_o mean_n of_o grace_n to_o the_o worthy_a partaker_n so_o that_o as_o a_o famous_a nonconformist_n declare_v that_o though_o wicked_a and_o profane_a person_n pollute_v this_o ordinance_n to_o themselves_o yet_o not_o to_o other_o but_o he_o that_o believe_v eat_v of_o the_o bread_n of_o life_n john_n 6.33_o which_o shall_v be_v make_v good_a to_o the_o believer_n though_o there_o be_v but_o one_o in_o the_o world_n see_v hussey_n plea_n for_o christian_a magistracy_n p._n 2._o and_o this_o he_o tell_v we_o beza_n himself_o be_v enforce_v to_o confess_v in_o his_o tract_n against_o erastus_n bonis_fw-la manere_fw-la bona_fw-la sacramenta_fw-la etiamsi_fw-la qui_fw-la mali_fw-la ad_fw-la eadem_fw-la accedunt_fw-la absit_fw-la ut_fw-la when_o the_o passeover_n be_v ready_a and_o the_o hour_n for_o it_o be_v come_v he_o sit_v down_o and_o the_o twelve_o apostle_n with_o he_o v._o 14._o but_o in_o the_o 19_o 20_o 21_o verse_n we_o be_v tell_v that_o he_o take_v bread_n and_o give_v thanks_o and_o break_v it_o among_o they_o and_o give_v unto_o they_o say_v this_o be_v my_o body_n which_o be_v give_v for_o you_o do_v this_o in_o which_o be_v celebrate_v before_o the_o lord_n supper_n or_o the_o institution_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o therefore_o they_o may_v have_v avoid_v he_o thereat_o but_o we_o do_v find_v that_o they_o have_v any_o such_o demur_n but_o they_o may_v as_o well_o receive_v it_o with_o judas_n as_o christ_n give_v it_o to_o he_o and_o yet_o be_v worthy_a communicant_n nay_o let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o 11_o chapter_n of_o the_o first_o epistle_n to_o the_o corinthian_n wherein_o we_o have_v the_o account_n of_o the_o danger_n of_o unworthy_a receive_v and_o we_o shall_v not_o yet_o find_v that_o other_o unworthiness_n make_v the_o good_a to_o become_v unworthy_a though_o some_o of_o they_o be_v so_o unworthy_a as_o to_o be_v drink_v at_o the_o receive_v of_o the_o lord_n supper_n and_o so_o do_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o yet_o we_o do_v read_v that_o st_n paul_n declare_v that_o other_o that_o be_v not_o so_o as_o they_o be_v therefore_o unworthy_a but_o rather_o declare_v let_v a_o man_n examine_v himself_o and_o so_o let_v he_o â—at_a yea_o for_o the_o future_a they_o be_v not_o to_o separate_v upon_o past_a fault_n but_o to_o amend_v when_o they_o come_v together_o â—vil_a way_n so_o even_o the_o church_n be_v to_o take_v care_n to_o inhibit_v they_o a_o spiritual_a communion_n with_o we_o till_o they_o repent_v or_o make_v declaration_n thereof_o and_o thereby_o
worship_n we_o be_v therefore_o adorer_n of_o the_o host_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o they_o too_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o like_a crime_n for_o to_o worship_n inward_o be_v worship_v as_o well_o as_o use_v a_o outward_a gesture_n of_o worship_n but_o as_o we_o do_v not_o charge_v our_o dissent_v brethren_n with_o this_o fault_n so_o neither_o be_v we_o to_o be_v charge_v therewith_o it_o be_v not_o the_o element_n that_o be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o inward_a or_o outward_a worship_n but_o that_o which_o be_v signify_v thereby_o and_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n in_o this_o ordinance_n to_o be_v inward_o devout_a humble_a and_o thankful_a they_o be_v not_o therefore_o to_o find_v fault_n with_o kneel_v which_o be_v but_o a_o outward_a declaration_n of_o our_o inward_a respect_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o the_o sacrament_n be_v ordinance_n of_o remembrance_n the_o very_a end_n of_o their_o institution_n be_v to_o do_v they_o in_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n 1_o cor._n 11.25_o not_o that_o we_o worship_n before_o the_o element_n yet_o this_o be_v no_o more_o argument_n that_o we_o worship_n they_o than_o that_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n can_v be_v say_v to_o worship_n the_o ark_n or_o the_o temple_n when_o they_o fall_v down_o in_o or_o before_o it_o and_o we_o may_v as_o well_o say_v that_o the_o jew_n when_o they_o cry_v hosanna_n to_o christ_n ride_v upon_o a_o ass_n worship_v the_o ass_n as_o say_v that_o every_o circumstance_n in_o worship_n be_v the_o object_n of_o it_o nor_o be_v the_o gesture_n of_o kneel_v the_o less_o unsuitable_a to_o this_o ordinance_n nor_o do_v we_o the_o more_o encourage_v the_o adoration_n of_o the_o host_n though_o we_o use_v kneel_v allow_v that_o the_o same_o gesture_n be_v use_v by_o the_o papist_n in_o their_o adoration_n of_o the_o host_n for_o if_o so_o we_o may_v as_o well_o be_v say_v to_o countenance_v they_o in_o their_o worship_v of_o saint_n because_o we_o kneel_v at_o our_o prayer_n to_o god_n as_o well_o as_o they_o do_v at_o their_o prayer_n to_o saint_n what_o though_o the_o papist_n kneel_v must_v not_o we_o therefore_o what_o though_o they_o say_v the_o lord_n prayer_n may_v not_o we_o it_o be_v not_o because_o the_o papist_n do_v such_o and_o such_o thing_n that_o be_v a_o good_a reason_n for_o our_o not_o do_v they_o because_o they_o do_v ill_o therein_o many_o people_n we_o see_v abuse_v themselves_o by_o intemperate_a eat_v or_o drink_v but_o will_v it_o follow_v therefore_o that_o we_o may_v not_o eat_v or_o drink_v and_o so_o the_o papist_n we_o deny_v not_o be_v guilty_a of_o idolatry_n and_o superstition_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o sacrament_n as_o well_o as_o other_o thing_n must_v we_o therefore_o by_o this_o reason_n the_o jew_n shall_v not_o have_v sacrifice_v or_o burn_v incense_n because_o the_o heathen_n use_v the_o same_o rite_n nay_o by_o this_o argument_n that_o the_o papist_n kneel_v at_o the_o sacrament_n and_o do_v ill_o thereby_o shall_v make_v our_o kneel_v at_o it_o to_o be_v sinful_a we_o shall_v be_v in_o a_o continual_a danger_n of_o lose_v that_o liberty_n wherewith_o christ_n have_v make_v we_o free_a the_o same_o be_v a_o argument_n against_o sit_v or_o stand_v as_o well_o as_o kneel_v at_o the_o sacrament_n shall_v they_o either_o stand_v or_o sit_v at_o it_o and_o indeed_o however_o we_o be_v accuse_v of_o favour_a popery_n as_o upon_o other_o account_n so_o for_o kneel_v at_o the_o sacrament_n yet_o we_o do_v find_v kneel_v at_o the_o receive_n of_o the_o sacrament_n so_o much_o a_o tenet_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n as_o that_o none_o other_o be_v allow_v among_o they_o for_o if_o you_o believe_v their_o missal_n set_v out_o by_o pope_n pius_n the_o 5_o we_o be_v tell_v that_o the_o priest_n though_o at_o the_o elevation_n of_o the_o host_n he_o be_v to_o kneel_v yet_o at_o the_o receive_v of_o it_o be_v to_o stand_v and_o according_o it_o be_v so_o practise_v by_o the_o popish_a priest_n not_o long_o since_o in_o this_o kingdom_n nay_o as_o learned_a man_n have_v show_v the_o pope_n himself_o not_o only_o use_v to_o sit_v at_o the_o receive_n of_o the_o sacrament_n as_o in_o bonaventure_n time_n but_o even_o now_o ordinary_o he_o receive_v it_o lean_v and_o extraordinary_o or_o when_o he_o celebrate_v mass_n himself_o stand_v see_v stillingfleet_n vnreason_n separation_n p._n 15._o case_n of_o kneel_v pt_n 2._o pag._n 38_o 39_o by_o which_o we_o see_v that_o notwithstanding_o the_o clamour_n of_o some_o person_n the_o posture_n of_o kneel_v at_o the_o sacrament_n be_v not_o so_o unsuitable_a to_o the_o ordinance_n of_o the_o sacrament_n it_o be_v a_o posture_n that_o may_v be_v use_v without_o any_o countenance_v of_o the_o adoration_n of_o the_o host_n or_o the_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n the_o abettor_n of_o which_o position_n be_v such_o as_o allow_v of_o other_o posture_n beside_o kneel_v which_o be_v not_o therefore_o disallow_v by_o dissenter_n because_o use_v by_o papist_n nor_o be_v they_o use_v by_o we_o as_o a_o countenance_v of_o they_o and_o now_o if_o kneel_v among_o we_o be_v not_o use_v any_o way_n to_o countenance_v the_o aforesaid_a error_n of_o the_o papist_n but_o be_v declare_v by_o the_o church_n not_o to_o be_v so_o design_v or_o use_v it_o can_v make_v we_o guilty_a of_o unworthy_a receive_v and_o thus_o have_v i_o give_v a_o answer_n to_o the_o chief_a objection_n against_o kneel_v at_o the_o sacrament_n which_o answer_n though_o support_v with_o a_o borrow_a strength_n from_o the_o write_n of_o several_a upon_o this_o subject_a as_o well_o as_o from_o its_o own_o force_n yet_o be_v not_o therefore_o the_o less_o convince_a but_o may_v be_v of_o good_a use_n to_o prove_v that_o by_o our_o kneel_v at_o the_o lord_n supper_n if_o we_o have_v no_o other_o failure_n we_o do_v not_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o nor_o be_v we_o unworthy_a communicant_n and_o thus_o have_v i_o at_o large_a show_v upon_o what_o account_n and_o by_o what_o way_n man_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n unworthy_o or_o be_v unworthy_a communicant_n and_o upon_o what_o they_o do_v not_o i_o come_v now_o in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o show_v in_o what_o sense_n the_o receive_n of_o it_o unworthy_o be_v so_o dangerous_a as_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o the_o text_n which_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n that_o i_o propose_v to_o treat_v of_o from_o the_o word_n of_o the_o text._n now_o the_o word_n of_o the_o text_n be_v for_o he_o that_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o eat_v and_o drink_v damnation_n to_o himself_o damnation_n a_o very_a terrible_a word_n but_o much_o more_o terrible_a thing_n as_o it_o be_v take_v for_o eternal_a damnation_n and_o can_v not_o be_v take_v in_o another_o sense_n but_o yet_o both_o in_o the_o notion_n of_o it_o and_o the_o application_n of_o it_o by_o st._n paul_n it_o admit_v of_o another_o acceptation_n the_o word_n in_o the_o original_a of_o many_o bibles_n it_o be_v put_v judgement_n by_o which_o be_v not_o only_o mean_v eternal_a but_o temporal_a judgement_n also_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o take_v will_v appear_v the_o more_o in_o that_o we_o find_v the_o word_n active_o apply_v unto_o men._n thus_o in_o the_o seven_o mat._n v._o 2._o it_o be_v say_v of_o man_n with_o what_o judgement_n you_o judge_v shall_v you_o be_v judge_v the_o word_n in_o the_o original_a be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d etc._n etc._n now_o it_o be_v it_o plain_a that_o in_o this_o place_n it_o relate_v only_o to_o temporal_a censure_v or_o judgement_n because_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o power_n of_o man_n to_o inflict_v eternal_a judgement_n and_o as_o the_o word_n in_o the_o original_a do_v not_o carry_v with_o it_o universal_o such_o a_o dreadful_a signification_n as_o eternal_a damnation_n so_o neither_o be_v it_o take_v by_o st._n paul_n in_o this_o sense_n for_o if_o we_o consider_v what_o follow_v these_o word_n of_o the_o text_n we_o shall_v find_v it_o primary_o or_o chief_o relate_v to_o temporal_a judgement_n for_o after_o he_o have_v show_v in_o this_o chapter_n how_o the_o corinthian_n have_v eat_v unworthy_o the_o lord_n supper_n v._o 20_o 21._o in_o the_o 27_o and_o 29_o verse_n he_o show_v they_o the_o danger_n of_o their_o action_n and_o that_o they_o may_v not_o think_v the_o danger_n of_o their_o
action_n to_o consist_v only_o in_o word_n in_o the_o 30_o verse_n he_o prove_v it_o to_o they_o from_o their_o own_o experience_n that_o for_o this_o cause_n to_o wit_n their_o unworthy_a eat_n and_o drink_v or_o receive_v of_o the_o lord_n supper_n many_o be_v weak_a and_o sickly_a among_o they_o and_o many_o be_v asleep_a he_o particularize_v in_o the_o judgement_n they_o have_v bring_v upon_o themselves_o thereby_o now_o that_o these_o judgement_n be_v not_o eternal_a not_o only_o the_o instance_n thereof_o but_o the_o word_n follow_v do_v plain_o declare_v that_o if_o they_o judge_v thereof_o be_v as_o dangerous_a and_o that_o the_o not_o partake_v of_o other_o ordinance_n worthy_o make_v man_n liable_a to_o damnation_n as_o well_o as_o the_o not_o partake_v of_o this_o sacrament_n worthy_o and_o that_o because_o it_o be_v as_o necessary_a a_o duty_n to_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n as_o it_o be_v not_o to_o come_v unworthy_o to_o it_o to_o which_o though_o we_o that_o stay_v away_o out_o of_o fear_n do_v not_o use_v his_o best_a endeavour_n to_o remove_v that_o fear_n and_o fit_v himself_o for_o it_o he_o be_v as_o inexcusable_a as_o the_o other_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v i_o will_v not_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n lest_o i_o shall_v receive_v it_o unworthy_o and_o yet_o not_o to_o strive_v after_o preparation_n or_o fitness_n in_o a_o gospel_n sense_n nor_o to_o inform_v himself_o when_o he_o be_v fit_a be_v but_o little_o better_a than_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v he_o will_v not_o be_v a_o christian_n because_o if_o he_o shall_v live_v ill_a it_o will_v be_v worse_o with_o he_o than_o if_o he_o have_v not_o be_v a_o christian_a he_o that_o know_v his_o master_n will_n and_o will_v not_o do_v it_o shall_v indeed_o be_v beat_v with_o many_o stripe_n but_o he_o that_o will_v not_o know_v it_o when_o he_o may_v because_o he_o will_v not_o fall_v into_o great_a condemnation_n do_v not_o therefore_o make_v his_o case_n the_o better_a but_o the_o worse_a in_o that_o he_o evacuate_v to_o himself_o one_o mean_n of_o avoid_v condemnation_n viz._n the_o knowledge_n of_o that_o will_n which_o direct_v he_o to_o avoid_v it_o the_o like_a be_v it_o with_o a_o man_n that_o wilful_o forbear_v the_o sacrament_n that_o so_o as_o he_o think_v he_o may_v escape_v the_o danger_n of_o unworthy_a receive_v which_o though_o he_o avoid_v the_o danger_n of_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o avoid_v the_o danger_n of_o a_o unworthy_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n which_o however_o man_n do_v it_o so_o much_o consider_v of_o as_o they_o ought_v be_v none_o of_o the_o least_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v present_o for_o let_v a_o man_n be_v never_o so_o cautious_a lest_o he_o receive_v unworthy_o if_o he_o make_v not_o his_o fear_n a_o argument_n for_o great_a care_n in_o his_o preparation_n and_o endeavour_n to_o fit_v himself_o his_o fear_n though_o it_o be_v not_o join_v with_o something_o of_o contempt_n yet_o at_o best_a carry_v with_o it_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o superstition_n or_o undue_a fear_n of_o god_n and_o show_v there_o be_v many_o time_n too_o much_o carelessness_n of_o spirit_n in_o matter_n of_o so_o great_a consequence_n as_o the_o receive_n of_o the_o sacrament_n be_v so_o that_o whatsoever_o allowable_a excuse_n there_o may_v be_v for_o our_o absence_n from_o it_o at_o some_o particular_a time_n yet_o there_o be_v none_o for_o his_o carelessness_n who_o live_v in_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_v thereof_o where_o it_o may_v not_o only_o be_v have_v but_o instruction_n also_o as_o to_o the_o rule_n and_o necessity_n of_o receive_v it_o and_o that_o because_o as_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n and_o interest_n not_o to_o receive_v it_o unworthy_o so_o be_v there_o a_o plain_a command_n for_o the_o receive_v it_o which_o nothing_o can_v excuse_v the_o total_a and_o wilful_a breach_n of_o but_o that_o we_o may_v not_o think_v this_o assertion_n pure_o beg_v viz._n that_o the_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v as_o dangerous_a as_o the_o receive_v of_o it_o unworthy_o i_o proceed_v to_o prove_v it_o in_o these_o follow_a instance_n 1._o in_o regard_n of_o the_o unworthy_a deal_n with_o christ_n 2._o with_o the_o sacrament_n itself_o first_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o unworthy_a deal_n with_o christ_n by_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o well_o indeed_o may_v we_o call_v it_o so_o when_o by_o so_o do_v we_o live_v in_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o his_o die_a command_n now_o that_o christ_n have_v command_v we_o to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n i_o think_v be_v so_o clear_a that_o to_o question_v it_o will_v be_v to_o question_v the_o institution_n of_o our_o saviour_n of_o which_o we_o have_v so_o full_a a_o account_n in_o several_a of_o the_o evangelist_n and_o which_o be_v confirm_v to_o we_o by_o st._n paul_n in_o 11_o chapter_n of_o his_o first_o epistle_n to_o communion_n it_o be_v indeed_o much_o urge_v by_o some_o as_o a_o hindrance_n to_o a_o worthy_a receive_n but_o upon_o what_o reason_n i_o see_v not_o if_o indeed_o my_o receive_n of_o the_o sacrament_n worthy_o depend_v upon_o other_o behaviour_n or_o unworthiness_n than_o it_o concern_v i_o to_o take_v care_n that_o i_o do_v not_o communicate_v with_o any_o that_o be_v unworthy_a but_o now_o the_o term_n of_o a_o worthy_a receive_n be_v not_o so_o uncertain_a but_o rather_o such_o as_o a_o private_a communicant_a be_v to_o look_v after_o as_o to_o himself_o but_o let_v a_o man_n examine_v himself_o and_o so_o let_v he_o eat_v 1_o cor._n 11.28_o as_o for_o other_o examination_n of_o themselves_o or_o their_o worthiness_n they_o be_v to_o look_v to_o it_o upon_o their_o peril_n and_o though_o a_o private_a christian_a as_o well_o as_o the_o church_n ought_v to_o admonish_v profane_a and_o careless_a person_n how_o they_o come_v yet_o if_o notwithstanding_o his_o admonition_n nay_o what_o be_v further_o the_o church_n they_o will_v venture_v to_o come_v it_o do_v not_o make_v he_o that_o be_v a_o worthy_a communicant_a otherwise_o hereby_o to_o become_v a_o unworthy_a communicant_a for_o indeed_o shall_v this_o be_v so_o not_o only_o the_o apostle_n will_v have_v be_v unworthy_a partaker_n of_o the_o passeover_n and_o sacrament_n because_o a_o judas_n be_v with_o they_o but_o it_o may_v be_v most_o good_a christian_n beside_o that_o receive_v it_o in_o a_o public_a congregation_n it_o be_v hard_o to_o say_v of_o the_o member_n of_o any_o congregation_n that_o they_o be_v all_o so_o good_a that_o there_o be_v no_o unworthy_a member_n among_o they_o and_o now_o be_v this_o reasonable_a that_o good_a mend_v worthy_a performance_n of_o this_o duty_n shall_v become_v evil_a because_o they_o receive_v with_o the_o unworthy_a when_o yet_o that_o they_o be_v unworthy_a be_v not_o the_o good_a man_n fault_n it_o be_v indeed_o my_o duty_n to_o fit_v myself_o as_o well_o as_o i_o can_v and_o behave_v myself_o reverent_o at_o it_o but_o if_o another_o will_v come_v unprepared_a be_v it_o to_o himself_o tho'_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o i_o ought_v to_o be_v sacrament_n among_o we_o find_v benefit_n thereby_o to_o their_o soul_n though_o it_o may_v be_v at_o the_o same_o time_n they_o be_v sensible_a that_o some_o that_o receive_v with_o they_o have_v not_o give_v such_o evidence_n of_o their_o repentance_n as_o may_v be_v wish_v nor_o indeed_o be_v they_o the_o more_o unworthy_a for_o receive_v it_o with_o they_o because_o they_o do_v not_o thereby_o join_v with_o they_o in_o their_o sin_n but_o in_o this_o part_n of_o god_n worship_n which_o be_v a_o public_a ordinance_n for_o the_o church_n all_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o worthy_a with_o the_o unworthy_a be_v only_o a_o join_n together_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o a_o common_a duty_n to_o which_o good_a people_n be_v oblige_v to_o come_v and_o that_o worthy_o though_o other_o do_v not_o which_o if_o they_o do_v not_o it_o be_v their_o fault_n and_o not_o good_a man_n and_o sad_a indeed_o will_v it_o be_v that_o after_o all_o our_o care_n and_o endeavour_n to_o adorn_v ourselves_o to_o this_o marriage-feast_n we_o shall_v be_v force_v to_o withdraw_v from_o it_o because_o there_o shall_v come_v in_o one_o that_o have_v not_o on_o the_o wedding_n garment_n the_o posture_n in_o which_o christ_n give_v and_o his_o apostle_n receive_v it_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v therefore_o that_o kneel_v be_v a_o unsuitable_a posture_n or_o make_v man_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n unworthy_o as_o to_o the_o first_o that_o this_o be_v more_o than_o can_v be_v prove_v that_o kneel_v be_v not_o the_o posture_n in_o which_o they_o receive_v it_o appear_v from_o 19.22_o that_o it_o be_v among_o the_o jewish_a record_n that_o person_n do_v not_o always_o keep_v the_o same_o posture_n in_o eat_v the_o passeover_n but_o when_o they_o come_v to_o some_o particular_a cup_n and_o the_o dish_n of_o bitter_a herb_n they_o forbear_v the_o incline_n or_o lean_v posture_n however_o whether_o the_o jew_n do_v keep_v always_o the_o same_o posture_n or_o not_o they_o do_v keep_v the_o same_o posture_n all_o the_o time_n of_o the_o celebration_n of_o the_o passeover_n it_o may_v be_v so_o or_o it_o may_v not_o be_v so_o for_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o read_v to_o the_o contrary_a and_o therefore_o the_o nonconformist_n do_v not_o so_o far_o assert_v the_o necessity_n of_o sit_v from_o our_o saviour_n behaviour_n but_o allow_v the_o take_n of_o the_o a_o supper_n or_o feast_n and_o be_v a_o token_n of_o our_o freedom_n and_o fellowship_n with_o christ_n that_o upon_o the_o same_o reason_n say_v they_o we_o may_v as_o well_o put_v on_o our_o hat_n when_o we_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n see_v reform_a dissenter_n p._n 6._o nor_o indeed_o be_v kneel_v a_o unsuitable_a posture_n at_o the_o sacrament_n if_o we_o consider_v that_o when_o we_o the_o nature_n and_o action_n of_o this_o ordinance_n it_o be_v a_o fit_a and_o proper_a posture_n of_o praise_n and_o thanksgiving_n and_o if_o any_o man_n think_v otherwise_o let_v he_o but_o consider_v the_o practice_n of_o heathen_n yea_o of_o dissenter_n in_o their_o domestic_a devotion_n but_o if_o these_o will_v not_o bear_v weight_n with_o he_o let_v he_o consider_v the_o practice_n of_o christ_n st._n paul_n st._n stephen_n and_o he_o will_v find_v plain_a instance_n of_o kneel_v in_o prayer_n yea_o do_v we_o but_o consider_v our_o saviour_n in_o his_o agony_n which_o we_o commemorate_v at_o the_o sacrament_n and_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o even_o than_o he_o do_v not_o reckon_v it_o unbecoming_a he_o to_o kneel_v at_o his_o devotion_n luke_n 22.41_o and_o now_o since_o that_o the_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o sacramental_a action_n on_o our_o part_n be_v prayer_n praise_n and_o the_o like_a and_o that_o either_o verbal_o or_o virtual_o and_o that_o kneel_v be_v agreeable_a to_o these_o great_a and_o spiritual_a part_n of_o it_o it_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v unsuitable_a that_o it_o be_v high_o become_v this_o ordinance_n not_o only_o as_o it_o be_v a_o posture_n agreeable_a with_o the_o nature_n and_o use_v of_o prayer_n and_o praise_n but_o as_o a_o posture_n of_o worship_n to_o christ_n and_o as_o our_o church_n express_v it_o a_o signification_n of_o a_o humble_a and_o grateful_a acknowledgement_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n therein_o give_v to_o all_o worthy_a receiver_n which_o bring_v i_o to_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o second_o reason_n that_o some_o man_n urge_v why_o the_o kneel_v at_o the_o sacrament_n make_v man_n to_o receive_v it_o unworthy_o viz._n that_o kneel_v be_v a_o posture_n of_o worship_n and_o adoration_n it_o too_o much_o countenance_v the_o adoration_n of_o the_o host_n and_o the_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n that_o we_o use_v kneel_v as_o a_o posture_n of_o worship_n be_v what_o we_o allow_v but_o that_o thereby_o we_o countenance_v the_o adoration_n of_o the_o host_n or_o the_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n be_v a_o thing_n unreasonable_o lay_v to_o our_o charge_n consider_v not_o only_o what_o our_o church_n declare_v in_o her_o rubric_n after_o the_o communion_n service_n but_o with_o what_o solidity_n and_o strength_n of_o argument_n they_o have_v confute_v the_o abettor_n of_o such_o doctrine_n as_o they_o be_v and_o in_o a_o time_n when_o other_o that_o have_v exclaim_v against_o our_o church_n for_o bend_v towards_o popery_n either_o dare_v not_o or_o will_v not_o write_v against_o it_o nor_o indeed_o be_v we_o to_o be_v blame_v for_o worship_v at_o this_o ordinance_n when_o by_o faith_n we_o see_v christ_n present_v with_o we_o yea_o in_o as_o much_o as_o we_o pray_v to_o and_o praise_n christ_n and_o celebrate_v his_o goodness_n we_o do_v therein_o worship_n prayer_n and_o thanksgiving_n be_v action_n of_o worship_n and_o that_o by_o the_o confession_n of_o our_o dissent_v brethren_n who_o allow_v that_o christ_n may_v be_v worship_v and_o adore_v by_o communicant_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o now_o since_o internal_a worship_n belong_v to_o christ_n in_o this_o ordinance_n why_o may_v not_o we_o use_v a_o external_n sign_n of_o what_o we_o inward_o prosess_v to_o do_v nay_o it_o upon_o the_o sense_n of_o what_o we_o do_v and_o receive_v at_o the_o sacrament_n we_o may_v lift_v up_o our_o eye_n and_o hand_n towards_o heaven_n and_o smite_v our_o breast_n why_o may_v not_o we_o as_o well_o kneel_v at_o our_o worship_n too_o it_o be_v a_o convenient_a gesture_n such_o as_o be_v practise_v by_o christ_n and_o be_v even_o now_o by_o many_o good_a man_n in_o their_o worship_n sure_o gesture_n be_v as_o lawful_a in_o one_o circumstance_n as_o in_o another_o and_o i_o may_v as_o well_o bow_v my_o knee_n to_o the_o father_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n as_o bow_v my_o head_n or_o lift_v up_o my_o eye_n a_o humble_a posture_n of_o body_n be_v not_o unsuitable_a to_o a_o humble_a mind_n nor_o indeed_o do_v kneel_v at_o the_o sacrament_n countenance_n the_o adoration_n of_o the_o host_n or_o the_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n because_o though_o we_o worship_n at_o the_o sacrament_n in_o this_o posture_n yet_o we_o do_v not_o worship_v the_o sacrament_n or_o make_v it_o the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n as_o the_o papist_n do_v any_o more_o than_o the_o dissenter_n themselves_o when_o they_o pray_v to_o and_o praise_n god_n at_o the_o receive_n of_o the_o sacrament_n for_o if_o by_o express_v our_o inward_a worship_n by_o this_o posture_n of_o outward_a
luke_n 6.46_o but_o second_o well_o may_v we_o say_v that_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o this_o ordinance_n be_v a_o unworthy_a deal_n with_o christ_n if_o we_o consider_v how_o ungrateful_a deal_n it_o be_v with_o he_o also_o i_o suppose_v none_o pretend_v to_o be_v true_a christian_n or_o pretend_v to_o stay_v away_o from_o this_o ordinance_n out_o of_o fear_n that_o they_o we_o wilful_o neglect_v to_o celebrate_v the_o memorial_n of_o they_o or_o do_v so_o much_o in_o remembrance_n of_o he_o as_o thankful_o to_o show_v forth_o his_o death_n till_o he_o come_v in_o way_n of_o his_o own_o appointment_n but_o perhaps_o here_o some_o may_v say_v that_o we_o can_v think_v of_o christ_n love_n to_o man_n in_o suffer_v for_o they_o without_o come_v to_o this_o ordinance_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v i_o do_v say_v but_o they_o may_v but_o yet_o not_o so_o acceptable_o with_o god_n so_o long_o as_o they_o live_v in_o the_o neglect_n of_o this_o appoint_a way_n of_o remembrance_n because_o christ_n have_v appoint_v this_o as_o the_o great_a memorial_n and_o therefore_o may_v well_o take_v it_o ill_o when_o man_n neglect_v his_o way_n and_o time_n of_o remembrance_n and_o stick_v only_o to_o their_o own_o which_o if_o they_o can_v remember_v his_o love_n as_o acceptable_o in_o as_o in_o that_o which_o he_o have_v appoint_v why_o do_v he_o appoint_v such_o a_o ordinance_n for_o this_o end_n certain_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o think_v any_o thing_n impertinent_a or_o of_o little_a use_n and_o acceptance_n which_o he_o have_v command_v much_o less_o that_o which_o indeed_o be_v the_o great_a ordinance_n of_o convey_v the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o confirm_v our_o interest_n in_o christ_n sure_o if_o any_o man_n under_o the_o law_n shall_v plead_v for_o his_o neglect_n of_o sacrifice_v though_o god_n command_v sacrifice_n that_o he_o can_v pray_v to_o god_n well_o enough_o though_o he_o offer_v up_o no_o sacrifice_n such_o a_o excuse_n or_o plea_n will_v not_o have_v be_v allow_v but_o will_v have_v be_v reckon_v as_o a_o virtual_a despise_n of_o sacrifice_n as_o unnecessary_a and_o consequent_o will_v have_v be_v very_o dangerous_a for_o so_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o that_o despise_a moses_n his_o law_n dye_v without_o mercy_n heb._n 10.28_o and_o now_o since_o christ_n have_v not_o only_o do_v so_o much_o for_o we_o but_o have_v leave_v it_o in_o charge_n at_o his_o death_n that_o we_o shall_v take_v and_o eat_v yea_o that_o we_o shall_v all_o drink_v in_o remembrance_n of_o he_o and_o we_o look_v upon_o this_o charge_n as_o necessary_a to_o be_v observe_v by_o we_o can_v we_o think_v he_o will_v not_o take_v it_o ill_o at_o our_o hand_n and_o punish_v we_o for_o our_o neglect_n unless_o we_o repent_v yea_o say_v the_o apostle_n see_v that_o you_o refuse_v not_o he_o that_o speak_v for_o if_o they_o escape_v not_o who_o refuse_v he_o that_o speak_v on_o earth_n much_o more_o shall_v not_o we_o escape_v and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o this_o ordinance_n we_o either_o show_v that_o we_o do_v not_o reckon_v it_o a_o necessary_a ordinance_n which_o yet_o be_v the_o most_o solemn_a ordinance_n in_o the_o christian_a worship_n that_o be_v a_o memorial_n of_o his_o great_a love_n and_o a_o show_v forth_o of_o his_o death_n till_o he_o come_v or_o else_o we_o make_v it_o to_o use_v the_o word_n a_o bugbear_n or_o more_o dreadful_a than_o it_o be_v and_o so_o deal_v unworthy_o by_o it_o when_o we_o act_v as_o if_o it_o be_v such_o a_o ordinance_n that_o be_v a_o great_a occasion_n of_o offence_n or_o ruin_n than_o any_o other_o in_o that_o we_o suppose_v it_o as_o one_o that_o be_v less_o possible_a to_o be_v do_v worthy_o as_o to_o god_n acceptance_n than_o any_o other_o which_o to_o suppose_v be_v not_o only_o to_o have_v ungracious_a thought_n of_o it_o but_o be_v a_o reflect_v upon_o the_o goodness_n as_o well_o as_o wisdom_n of_o christ_n who_o have_v order_v this_o as_o a_o mean_n for_o our_o salvation_n if_o we_o be_v but_o sincere_a as_o indeed_o we_o ought_v as_o well_o as_o pretend_v to_o be_v in_o other_o ordinance_n i_o be_o apt_a to_o think_v that_o many_o of_o these_o man_n who_o stay_v away_o altogether_o from_o this_o ordinance_n for_o fear_n as_o they_o say_v lest_o if_o they_o come_v to_o it_o they_o shall_v come_v unworthy_o be_v yet_o apt_a to_o hope_v that_o notwithstanding_o their_o unfitness_n to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n if_o they_o shall_v happen_v to_o die_v they_o shall_v receive_v the_o thing_n signify_v by_o the_o sacrament_n viz._n the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n through_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n suffering_n and_o now_o if_o these_o person_n notwithstanding_o their_o institution_n for_o that_o end_n nay_o if_o any_o of_o these_o person_n shall_v lie_v upon_o a_o deathbed_n upon_o ask_v i_o suppose_v they_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o assert_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n through_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n though_o they_o be_v unworthy_a of_o it_o and_o now_o be_v not_o man_n that_o be_v sincere_a in_o what_o they_o say_v as_o fit_a to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n as_o they_o be_v fit_a to_o die_v yea_o sure_o if_o they_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n they_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o die_v or_o receive_v the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n for_o indeed_o i_o can_v find_v where_o god_n be_v say_v to_o be_v more_o merciful_a to_o man_n at_o their_o death_n than_o at_o the_o sacrament_n it_o be_v very_o easy_o to_o be_v believe_v that_o he_o who_o will_v pardon_v we_o when_o we_o come_v to_o die_v will_v pardon_v we_o also_o when_o we_o prepare_v ourselves_o as_o well_o as_o we_o can_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n it_o be_v as_o easy_a also_o to_o think_v that_o those_o who_o god_n will_v receive_v as_o fit_v for_o heaven_n he_o will_v receive_v also_o as_o fit_v for_o his_o ordinance_n upon_o earth_n and_o therefore_o person_n deal_v very_o unworthy_o with_o this_o when_o they_o represent_v it_o as_o more_o dreadful_a than_o it_o be_v but_o three_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v as_o dangerous_a as_o the_o receive_v it_o unworthy_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o be_v without_o those_o preparatory_a and_o ornamental_a grace_n which_o shall_v make_v we_o receive_v worthy_o do_v as_o well_o expose_v we_o to_o the_o danger_n of_o damnation_n when_o we_o do_v not_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n as_o when_o we_o do_v receive_v it_o if_o a_o man_n have_v the_o qualification_n of_o a_o worthy_a communicant_a he_o be_v fit_a to_o receive_v but_o if_o he_o have_v they_o not_o whether_o he_o receive_v the_o like_a to_o perish_v luke_n 13.3_o or_o if_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v he_o be_v like_a to_o be_v damn_v john_n 3.18_o nay_o he_o be_v condemn_v already_o or_o if_o a_o man_n know_v not_o christ_n he_o have_v no_o eternal_a life_n abide_v in_o he_o john_n 17.3_o or_o if_o he_o be_v not_o in_o charity_n he_o be_v a_o murderer_n and_o no_o murderer_n st._n john_n tell_v we_o have_v eternal_a love_n to_o he_o can_v be_v happy_a in_o christ_n nor_o by_o he_o or_o if_o he_o be_v not_o thankful_a to_o god_n for_o his_o love_n in_o christ_n he_o be_v unworthy_a of_o it_o whether_o he_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o not_o nor_o be_v it_o a_o argument_n that_o man_n be_v the_o free_a from_o damnation_n because_o so_o long_o as_o they_o do_v not_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n they_o do_v not_o make_v a_o sacramental_a vow_n or_o covenant_n to_o live_v well_o for_o though_o they_o never_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n they_o be_v yet_o oblige_v to_o live_v as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v there_o be_v a_o natural_a obligation_n upon_o they_o to_o obey_v god_n in_o all_o his_o command_n from_o which_o they_o be_v not_o discharge_v because_o they_o do_v not_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n for_o suppose_v man_n never_o make_v any_o verbal_a or_o formal_a covenant_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v suppose_v that_o god_n lose_v the_o least_o right_a to_o the_o utmost_a of_o their_o service_n or_o that_o he_o will_v the_o soon_o dispense_v with_o they_o because_o they_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o another_o tie_n to_o serve_v he_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o he_o who_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n do_v thereby_o lay_v a_o further_a tie_n upon_o himself_o and_o make_v the_o bond_n double_a but_o yet_o this_o do_v not_o make_v holiness_n the_o less_o bind_v to_o one_o that_o do_v not_o receive_v the_o natural_a right_o that_o god_n have_v to_o it_o be_v a_o indissoluble_a bond_n to_o man_n to_o practice_v it_o nay_o he_o that_o will_v not_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n because_o he_o will_v not_o make_v a_o actual_a engagement_n to_o live_v better_o be_v more_o inexcusable_a in_o some_o respect_n than_o one_o that_o make_v and_o break_v it_o for_o he_o make_v one_o sin_n a_o reason_n for_o another_o and_o show_v a_o unwillingness_n to_o be_v oblige_v to_o god_n service_n so_o far_o as_o he_o may_v but_o the_o other_o though_o he_o break_v his_o tie_n yet_o by_o tie_v himself_o declare_v that_o he_o own_v it_o as_o his_o duty_n to_o be_v so_o tie_v and_o that_o he_o ought_v to_o live_v up_o to_o it_o so_o that_o to_o neglect_v the_o receive_v of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o that_o wilful_o too_o to_o avoid_v the_o danger_n of_o unworthy_a receive_v be_v but_o at_o best_a run_v into_o one_o danger_n to_o avoid_v another_o but_o four_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v as_o dangerous_a as_o the_o receive_n it_o unworthy_o because_o those_o thing_n which_o make_v we_o unworthy_a receiver_n be_v no_o excuse_n for_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a absence_n from_o or_o neglect_v of_o the_o lord_n supper_n now_o that_o which_o make_v man_n unworthy_a receiver_n i_o tell_v you_o be_v not_o only_a sin_n but_o either_o want_n of_o knowledge_n or_o of_o desire_n to_o christ_n the_o want_n also_o of_o charity_n repentance_n faith_n devotion_n thankfulness_n and_o the_o like_a the_o want_n then_o of_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o ill_o as_o to_o make_v man_n unworthy_a receiver_n the_o question_n be_v whether_o the_o want_n of_o these_o be_v a_o just_a excuse_n for_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o this_o duty_n now_o the_o want_n of_o these_o be_v so_o ill_o i_o answer_v that_o it_o can_v be_v a_o excuse_n for_o the_o neglect_v of_o our_o duty_n for_o one_o sin_n can_v be_v a_o excuse_n for_o another_o as_o will_v appear_v if_o we_o consider_v some_o of_o those_o particular_a qualification_n for_o this_o duty_n the_o want_n of_o which_o make_v man_n unworthy_a receiver_n when_o they_o come_v to_o it_o as_o first_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o this_o ordinance_n the_o want_n of_o which_o be_v rather_o matter_n of_o shame_n than_o a_o excuse_v for_o stay_v away_o in_o that_o we_o be_v ignorant_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o such_o mean_n and_o help_v to_o knowledge_n nay_o shall_v christ_n ask_v a_o man_n why_o do_v not_o thou_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n and_o he_o answer_v because_o i_o do_v know_v thou_o nor_o it_o will_v this_o excuse_n be_v take_v no_o rather_o it_o will_v incense_v christ_n the_o more_o that_o he_o shall_v plead_v his_o own_o neglect_v as_o a_o excuse_n for_o sin_n and_o pretend_v the_o want_n of_o that_o to_o defend_v he_o when_o it_o be_v his_o own_o sin_n and_o fault_n that_o he_o want_v it_o and_o so_o in_o the_o want_n of_o desire_n after_o christ_n and_o his_o ordinance_n it_o will_v be_v no_o excuse_n for_o not_o come_v thereto_o that_o we_o have_v no_o desire_n to_o they_o or_o he_o but_o rather_o a_o aggravation_n of_o our_o fault_n not_o to_o desire_v he_o and_o therefore_o to_o stay_v away_o from_o he_o the_o like_a i_o may_v show_v under_o the_o want_n of_o repentance_n that_o to_o neglect_v come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n because_o we_o do_v repent_v be_v to_o make_v that_o which_o be_v a_o instance_n of_o our_o sad_a estate_n a_o reason_n for_o neglect_v a_o mean_n of_o salvation_n yea_o it_o be_v to_o urge_v our_o folly_n and_o the_o danger_n of_o our_o condition_n as_o a_o reason_n for_o not_o come_v to_o the_o ordinance_n of_o pardon_n which_o though_o we_o do_v come_v to_o yet_o we_o ought_v to_o perform_v the_o other_o because_o it_o be_v that_o which_o we_o must_v necessary_o perform_v if_o we_o will_v be_v save_v whether_o we_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o not_o and_o therefore_o if_o we_o do_v repent_v the_o more_o inexcusable_a be_v we_o when_o though_o god_n command_v it_o and_o we_o have_v such_o need_n of_o it_o we_o yet_o neglect_v it_o the_o want_n therefore_o of_o that_o which_o be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o save_v we_o can_v be_v a_o good_a excuse_n for_o neglect_v the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n so_o that_o if_o we_o come_v without_o repentance_n to_o the_o sacrament_n we_o come_v unworthy_o but_o the_o more_o unexcusable_a be_v we_o when_o we_o do_v not_o repent_v see_v it_o be_v so_o necessary_a whether_o we_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n or_o not_o nay_o even_o under_o the_o want_n of_o charity_n it_o be_v no_o excuse_n for_o not_o communicate_v to_o say_v we_o be_v not_o in_o charity_n for_o if_o we_o be_v not_o what_o can_v we_o say_v for_o ourselves_o why_o we_o be_v not_o we_o be_v command_v to_o be_v in_o charity_n and_o there_o be_v reason_n for_o it_o whether_o we_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o not_o nay_o if_o we_o be_v not_o yet_o the_o more_o reason_n have_v we_o to_o be_v so_o for_o the_o future_a and_o so_o come_v to_o this_o ordinance_n of_o charity_n to_o have_v the_o pardon_n of_o our_o past_a uncharitableness_n seal_v unto_o we_o by_o these_o and_o the_o like_a instance_n we_o see_v that_o the_o want_n of_o the_o qualification_n of_o a_o worthy_a communicant_a be_v no_o excuse_n for_o our_o not_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n any_o further_a than_o one_o sin_n be_v a_o excuse_n for_o another_o or_o the_o break_n of_o one_o command_n be_v a_o apology_n for_o the_o violation_n of_o another_o the_o want_n indeed_o of_o do_v our_o duty_n in_o some_o instance_n may_v render_v we_o unfit_a for_o it_o in_o other_o but_o it_o be_v no_o excuse_n for_o do_v ill_o in_o one_o thing_n that_o we_o have_v not_o do_v well_o in_o another_o nor_o be_v one_o fault_n a_o just_a plea_n for_o another_o for_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o it_o will_v not_o only_o exempt_a man_n from_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n but_o many_o other_o duty_n of_o public_a worship_n and_o we_o may_v as_o well_o excuse_v ourselves_o for_o not_o pray_v at_o all_o as_o not_o receive_v at_o all_o because_o when_o we_o be_v without_o the_o qualification_n of_o faith_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n we_o be_v as_o unfit_a to_o pray_v as_o to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n which_o bring_v i_o to_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o the_o four_o head_n viz._n that_o the_o not_o partake_v of_o other_o ordinance_n worthy_o make_v man_n liable_a to_o damnation_n as_o well_o as_o the_o not_o partake_v of_o the_o sacrament_n worthy_o thus_o for_o instance_n to_o pray_v be_v a_o ordinance_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o well_o as_o a_o duty_n by_o natural_a religion_n and_o yet_o to_o pray_v unworthy_o do_v not_o only_o provoke_v god_n not_o to_o hear_v our_o prayer_n psal_n 66.18_o but_o be_v a_o abomination_n to_o he_o prov._n 15.8_o and_o what_o be_v a_o abomination_n to_o god_n i_o think_v i_o need_v not_o prove_v that_o it_o deserve_v his_o condemnation_n nay_o as_o to_o come_v without_o repentance_n to_o the_o lord_n supper_n so_o to_o pray_v without_o it_o be_v exceed_o dangerous_a because_o such_o man_n that_o pray_v as_o well_o as_o receive_v without_o it_o give_v god_n the_o lie_n and_o
pray_v in_o hypocrisy_n nay_o without_o it_o a_o man_n be_v a_o unworthy_a performer_n of_o any_o duty_n and_o be_v always_o liable_a to_o damnation_n luke_n 13.3_o the_o like_a i_o may_v show_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o faith_n that_o if_o a_o man_n pray_v without_o faith_n he_o no_o more_o pray_v aright_o than_o he_o receive_v aright_o without_o it_o james_z 1.6_o nay_o even_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o charity_n it_o be_v as_o unworthy_a deal_n with_o god_n and_o with_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n to_o ask_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n upon_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n suffering_n whilst_o we_o do_v not_o forgive_v man_n their_o trespass_n as_o it_o be_v to_o desire_v it_o under_o the_o commemoration_n of_o his_o suffering_n with_o the_o same_o uncharitableness_n for_o by_o beg_v of_o forgiveness_n by_o virtue_n of_o they_o in_o prayer_n we_o do_v commemorate_v it_o by_o word_n as_o in_o the_o sacrament_n we_o do_v it_o by_o sign_n and_o visible_a representation_n and_o indeed_o both_o in_o the_o sacrament_n and_o in_o prayer_n to_o ask_v for_o forgiveness_n whilst_o we_o be_v uncharitable_a be_v but_o to_o provoke_v god_n and_o in_o both_o we_o play_v the_o hypocrite_n with_o god_n whilst_o we_o plead_v christ_n suffering_n for_o the_o removal_n of_o the_o punishment_n before_o we_o have_v leave_v the_o sin_n and_o as_o in_o the_o instance_n of_o prayer_n so_o under_o the_o ordinance_n of_o hear_v i_o may_v show_v you_o that_o the_o unworthy_a performance_n thereof_o render_v man_n liable_a to_o damnation_n for_o thus_o we_o be_v tell_v that_o unless_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v regard_v and_o have_v a_o worthy_a or_o due_a respect_n it_o be_v but_o a_o savour_n of_o death_n 2_o cor._n 2.16_o it_o will_v rise_v up_o in_o judgement_n against_o we_o and_o by_o it_o we_o shall_v be_v condemn_v john_n 12.48_o and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o great_a danger_n of_o pray_v or_o hear_v unworthy_o the_o very_a person_n that_o pretend_v the_o fear_n of_o unworthiness_n in_o receive_v of_o the_o sacrament_n for_o the_o neglect_v thereof_o can_v by_o their_o action_n show_v that_o they_o may_v be_v fit_a enough_o for_o read_v hear_v and_o pray_v and_o they_o reckon_v that_o through_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n they_o may_v have_v reason_n to_o hope_v for_o a_o favourable_a acceptance_n of_o their_o devotion_n well_o now_o we_o may_v venture_v upon_o prayer_n to_o god_n and_o therein_o to_o implore_v the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n upon_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n suffering_n nay_o shall_v we_o blame_v any_o person_n for_o a_o total_a neglect_n of_o prayer_n see_v case_n of_o doubt_v conscience_n p._n 38._o notwithstanding_o there_o be_v danger_n in_o pray_v unworthy_o and_o may_v not_o we_o venture_v too_o upon_o the_o sacrament_n be_v not_o we_o as_o worthy_a to_o receive_v the_o sacramental_a blessing_n as_o we_o be_v to_o receive_v the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n or_o other_o blessing_n desire_v in_o prayer_n sure_o if_o through_o mercy_n we_o be_v fit_a to_o pray_v to_o god_n as_o christian_n be_v to_o be_v fit_a we_o be_v fit_a to_o receive_v his_o sacrament_n if_o indeed_o we_o do_v not_o know_v what_o be_v signify_v when_o we_o commemorate_v christ_n die_v love_n in_o the_o sacrament_n if_o we_o have_v no_o desire_n after_o christ_n if_o we_o have_v not_o charity_n and_o be_v without_o faith_n and_o be_v not_o thankful_a for_o god_n love_n to_o we_o in_o christ_n we_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o receive_v nor_o to_o pray_v as_o christian_n do_v for_o as_o we_o state_n the_o notion_n and_o duty_n of_o prayer_n to_o christian_n it_o be_v as_o requisite_a that_o we_o know_v what_o we_o desire_v or_o have_v apprehension_n thereof_o that_o we_o pray_v in_o faith_n and_o in_o charity_n that_o we_o have_v desire_n after_o christ_n when_o we_o beg_v a_o interest_n in_o he_o and_o forgiveness_n through_o he_o or_o the_o like_a as_o when_o we_o beg_v the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n at_o the_o sacrament_n yea_o when_o in_o prayer_n we_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o pardon_n for_o christ_n sake_n we_o be_v suppose_v then_o to_o commemorate_v his_o merit_n in_o word_n as_o in_o the_o sacrament_n we_o do_v by_o sign_n though_o a_o commemoration_n in_o word_n be_v not_o enough_o always_o because_o he_o who_o merit_n we_o commemorate_v have_v oblige_v we_o so_o to_o do_v by_o sign_n as_o well_o as_o in_o word_n so_o that_o if_o we_o be_v sincere_a in_o our_o word_n or_o prayer_n and_o we_o hope_v that_o we_o can_v put_v up_o prayer_n in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o god_n will_v pardon_v the_o defect_n thereof_o and_o accept_v of_o they_o through_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n merit_n and_o intercession_n i_o can_v see_v but_o those_o that_o be_v worthy_a in_o god_n acceptance_n to_o pray_v as_o christian_n ought_v to_o pray_v viz._n in_o the_o name_n and_o through_o the_o mediation_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v also_o worthy_a in_o the_o same_o sense_n to_o perform_v other_o religious_a duty_n and_o that_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o accept_v of_o their_o sincere_a endeavour_n to_o worship_n he_o in_o the_o sacrament_n as_o well_o as_o in_o prayer_n and_o especial_o when_o he_o have_v command_v we_o to_o receive_v his_o sacrament_n as_o well_o as_o to_o pray_v to_o he_o upon_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o suffering_n when_o we_o be_v of_o age_n and_o understanding_n so_o to_o do_v in_o short_a he_o that_o be_v a_o good_a christian_a be_v fit_a to_o be_v a_o communicant_a and_o he_o that_o be_v not_o so_o be_v as_o unfit_a to_o pray_v as_o to_o communicate_v if_o we_o live_v in_o sin_n we_o can_v neither_o worthy_o prey_n nor_o receive_v but_o whatever_o ordinance_n we_o meddle_v with_o our_o sin_n debarr_v we_o the_o benefit_n thereof_o as_o well_o as_o provoke_v god_n therein_o and_o we_o can_v no_o more_o be_v accept_v of_o without_o charity_n in_o prayer_n than_o in_o the_o sacrament_n but_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n if_o we_o be_v sincere_a christian_n and_o will_v serve_v god_n in_o all_o the_o part_n of_o his_o worship_n and_o service_n as_o well_o as_o we_o can_v and_o be_v sorry_a for_o our_o failure_n we_o be_v not_o only_o of_o the_o number_n of_o they_o who_o prayer_n god_n will_v be_v please_v to_o hear_v but_o if_o we_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n may_v experimental_o feel_v thereby_o our_o growth_n in_o grace_n and_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n whereas_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n to_o all_o the_o forementioned_a danger_n of_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n there_o be_v also_o this_o that_o by_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n thereof_o we_o may_v bring_v ourselves_o to_o a_o disuse_n of_o other_o ordinance_n also_o and_o not_o only_o bring_v upon_o ourselves_o a_o carelessness_n of_o spirit_n in_o matter_n of_o especial_o institute_v religion_n but_o fall_v into_o a_o careless_a and_o loose_a way_n of_o live_v too_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o neither_o the_o neglect_v of_o pray_v of_o hear_v and_o read_v god_n word_n nor_o a_o ill_a life_n necessary_o follow_v the_o total_a neglect_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n yet_o shall_v i_o say_v that_o the_o looseness_n of_o the_o present_a age_n and_o the_o visible_a decay_n of_o piety_n among_o we_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n owe_v to_o the_o great_a neglect_n and_o little_a sense_n that_o too_o many_o have_v of_o the_o necessity_n and_o excellency_n of_o this_o ornance_n i_o believe_v i_o shall_v hardly_o be_v disprove_v for_o though_o it_o will_v not_o be_v allow_v that_o the_o often_o man_n receive_v the_o lord_n supper_n the_o more_o holy_a they_o be_v and_o the_o less_o they_o sin_v yet_o since_o in_o the_o receive_n of_o this_o ordinance_n we_o commemorate_v the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n for_o sin_n and_o so_o thereby_o be_v make_v sensible_a what_o a_o evil_a and_o hateful_a thing_n it_o be_v in_o god_n sight_n when_o even_o nothing_o can_v expiate_v for_o it_o but_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n the_o son_n of_o god_n as_o also_o be_v suppose_v to_o renew_v our_o covenant_n with_o god_n that_o we_o will_v live_v better_o for_o the_o future_a we_o can_v but_o own_o that_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v a_o great_a argument_n if_o not_o mean_n against_o sin_v and_o this_o not_o only_o those_o who_o upon_o the_o sense_n of_o their_o approach_n hereto_o make_v some_o formal_a and_o temporary_a show_n of_o repentance_n and_o promise_n to_o do_v better_o do_v thereby_o declare_v that_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n before_o and_o upon_o a_o communion_n day_n as_o also_o the_o real_a change_n which_o god_n be_v please_v to_o work_v many_o time_n upon_o some_o man_n by_o their_o attendance_n upon_o this_o ordinance_n i_o say_v the_o thing_n be_v equal_o consider_v those_o that_o come_v to_o the_o communion_n out_o of_o a_o sense_n of_o christ_n command_n and_o their_o duty_n so_o to_o do_v be_v in_o a_o more_o probable_a way_n of_o leave_v their_o sin_n than_o those_o be_v who_o live_v in_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o it_o especial_o if_o the_o love_n to_o sin_n be_v the_o foundation_n of_o their_o neglect_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o the_o one_o sort_n have_v one_o mean_n and_o help_n more_o against_o sin_n if_o we_o will_v allow_v that_o god_n ordinance_n be_v so_o than_o the_o other_o and_o according_o i_o do_v not_o find_v but_o that_o many_o person_n who_o frequent_a this_o ordinance_n live_v as_o unblamable_o as_o those_o that_o abstain_v from_o it_o and_o if_o they_o do_v not_o they_o be_v the_o more_o inexcusable_a in_o their_o sin_n and_o that_o because_o the_o more_o frequent_o they_o come_v to_o it_o the_o further_a tie_n and_o obligation_n do_v they_o lay_v upon_o themselves_o to_o abstain_v from_o sin_n and_o now_o perhaps_o may_v some_o desire_n to_o be_v inform_v what_o they_o shall_v do_v in_o this_o case_n we_o be_v sure_a say_v they_o if_o we_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n that_o we_o be_v unworthy_a and_o if_o we_o come_v not_o or_o especial_o live_v in_o a_o total_a neglect_v thereof_o and_o do_v it_o endeavour_v to_o fit_v ourselves_o we_o be_v as_o unworthy_a and_o in_o as_o dangerous_a a_o condition_n to_o who_o i_o answer_v that_o they_o be_v neither_o to_o live_v in_o a_o total_a and_o wilful_a neglect_v thereof_o nor_o yet_o to_o come_v unworthy_o but_o to_o make_v themselves_o ready_a and_o then_o they_o may_v yea_o then_o they_o ought_v to_o come_v and_o call_v to_o do_v better_o be_v that_o which_o be_v unjustifyable_a in_o all_o people_n and_o such_o a_o state_n as_o for_o their_o soul_n good_a they_o ought_v so_o far_o as_o they_o have_v opportunity_n and_o ability_n to_o be_v free_a from_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o all_o that_o pretend_v to_o christianity_n at_o least_o to_o know_v god_n and_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n as_o fear_n of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o so_o unfitness_n for_o so_o sacred_a a_o ordinance_n for_o as_o to_o wicked_a man_n doubt_n of_o their_o unfitness_n a_o great_a deal_n of_o reason_n there_o be_v for_o they_o whilst_o they_o remain_v so_o to_o such_o the_o sacrament_n be_v no_o more_o than_o it_o be_v to_o judas_n till_o god_n be_v please_v to_o work_v a_o change_n upon_o they_o such_o benefit_n to_o believer_n nor_o need_v thou_o dread_v the_o ordinance_n of_o christ_n when_o thou_o steadfast_o believe_v thy_o interest_n in_o he_o for_o if_o thou_o be_v worthy_a in_o or_o believe_v to_o be_v in_o other_o to_o who_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o want_n thereof_o do_v not_o make_v man_n unworthy_a communicant_n it_o be_v not_o necessary_a that_o all_o christian_n shall_v be_v so_o enliven_v god_n neither_o have_v make_v a_o promise_n nor_o command_v it_o as_o a_o duty_n that_o all_o communicant_n shall_v be_v so_o endow_v i_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o god_n will_v imagine_v that_o their_o soul_n be_v carry_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o that_o with_o st._n stephen_n they_o be_v not_o only_o view_v their_o saviour_n by_o faith_n in_o figure_n and_o sacrament_n but_o by_o personal_a sight_n yea_o by_o their_o gesture_n and_o by_o their_o word_n which_o most_o sweet_o set_v forth_o christ_n love_n to_o they_o and_o they_o to_o christ_n we_o may_v be_v apt_a to_o believe_v that_o if_o they_o have_v not_o be_v in_o heaven_n yet_o they_o mind_v nothing_o else_o and_o be_v go_v up_o to_o be_v for_o ever_o with_o the_o lord_n but_o however_o we_o may_v admire_v this_o in_o other_o we_o be_v not_o to_o judge_v those_o as_o unworthy_a that_o can_v reach_v thereto_o for_o if_o we_o shall_v so_o judge_v we_o shall_v not_o only_o condemn_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o generation_n of_o god_n child_n but_o shall_v cast_v a_o stumbling-block_n before_o they_o and_o render_v their_o case_n worse_o than_o it_o be_v for_o as_o the_o save_a
