and_o they_o be_v these_o that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o god_n that_o that_o only_o true_a god_n be_v distinguish_v into_o three_o person_n father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n all_o equal_o god_n that_o that_o god_n be_v the_o creator_n and_o governor_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o all_o thing_n be_v make_v good_a by_o he_o and_o be_v still_o govern_v by_o he_o righteous_o that_o man_n in_o particular_a be_v make_v perfect_o righteous_a by_o he_o that_o man_n continue_v not_o long_o in_o his_o happy_a estate_n but_o fall_v by_o transgress_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n in_o eat_v the_o forbid_a fruit_n that_o we_o be_v all_o guilty_a of_o adam_n sin_n be_v in_o his_o loin_n when_o he_o commit_v that_o sin_n that_o every_o one_o of_o we_o bring_v into_o the_o world_n corrupt_v and_o pollute_a nature_n nature_n as_o full_a of_o sin_n as_o a_o toad_n be_v of_o poison_n that_o unto_o this_o original_a corruption_n we_o have_v add_v a_o numberless_a number_n of_o actual_a transgression_n and_o that_o in_o evil_a thought_n evil_a word_n and_o evil_a deed_n that_o by_o our_o sin_n we_o have_v make_v ourselves_o liable_a to_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n to_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n to_o all_o judgement_n and_o plague_n here_o and_o to_o eternal_a death_n and_o condemnation_n hereafter_o that_o no_o man_n can_v free_v himself_o out_o of_o that_o miserable_a condition_n whereinto_o by_o sin_n he_o have_v plunge_v himself_o neither_o can_v any_o mere_a creature_n help_v he_o that_o god_n out_o of_o his_o free_a grace_n and_o rich_a mercy_n do_v send_v his_o own_o son_n out_o of_o his_o bosom_n into_o the_o world_n to_o take_v our_o nature_n upon_o he_o that_o therein_o he_o may_v become_v our_o surety_n and_o redeemer_n that_o christ_n be_v both_o god_n and_o man_n in_o one_o person_n that_o he_o be_v conceive_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o bear_v of_o the_o virgin_n mary_n that_o he_o die_v upon_o the_o cross_n to_o save_v his_o people_n from_o their_o sin_n that_o he_o rise_v again_o the_o three_o day_n from_o the_o dead_a ascend_v into_o heaven_n sit_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n and_o make_v continual_a intercession_n for_o we_o that_o by_o faith_n we_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n that_o faith_n be_v promise_v the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o salvation_n of_o our_o soul_n upon_o the_o alone_a condition_n of_o a_o lively_a faith_n particular_a principle_n concern_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v these_o that_o it_o be_v ordain_v by_o christ_n himself_o as_o a_o memorial_n of_o his_o great_a love_n in_o offer_v up_o his_o life_n a_o sacrifice_n for_o our_o sin_n that_o this_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n be_v a_o seal_n of_o god_n covenant_n whereby_o he_o bind_v himself_o to_o perform_v his_o promise_n make_v to_o we_o in_o christ_n for_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n therein_o that_o the_o outward_a sign_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v bread_n and_o wine_n by_o which_o be_v set_v forth_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n which_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n by_o faith_n do_v partake_v of_o in_o this_o sacrament_n that_o whosoever_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o that_o every_o one_o be_v to_o examine_v himself_o lest_o he_o eat_v and_o drink_v judgement_n to_o himself_o have_v thus_o show_v what_o be_v that_o knowledge_n which_o be_v require_v of_o every_o worthy_a communicant_a ii_o i_o shall_v now_o show_v the_o necessity_n thereof_o which_o appear_v 1_o because_o without_o this_o knowledge_n a_o man_n can_v never_o attain_v to_o any_o of_o the_o other_o grace_n for_o a_o ignorant_a man_n can_v neither_o believe_v nor_o repent_v nor_o love_n god_n or_o his_o neighbour_n aright_o 2_o because_o without_o this_o knowledge_n a_o man_n can_v discern_v the_o lord_n body_n 29._o which_o if_o he_o do_v not_o he_o eat_v and_o drink_v damnation_n to_o himself_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a that_o all_o who_o receive_v the_o lord_n supper_n shall_v discern_v the_o lord_n body_n i._n e._n shall_v perceive_v that_o there_o be_v more_o to_o be_v receive_v than_o that_o which_o be_v see_v for_o the_o three_o particular_a viz._n the_o trial_n of_o thy_o knowledge_n whether_o it_o be_v a_o true_a save_a knowledge_n thou_o may_v know_v it_o by_o the_o property_n thereof_o some_o whereof_o be_v these_o 1_o true_a save_a knowledge_n be_v experimental_a whereby_o a_o christian_a have_v a_o spiritual_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o what_o he_o know_v he_o have_v not_o only_o a_o general_n and_o a_o notional_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o own_o miserable_a condition_n by_o nature_n and_o of_o jesus_n christ_n but_o he_o have_v likewise_o a_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o attribute_n as_o of_o his_o power_n in_o support_v he_o under_o his_o trial_n and_o temptation_n of_o his_o faithfulness_n in_o make_v good_a his_o promise_n unto_o he_o he_o have_v likewise_o a_o sensible_a feel_n of_o his_o own_o wretched_a condition_n by_o nature_n and_o a_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n so_o that_o he_o know_v christ_n to_o be_v his_o saviour_n and_o redeemer_n and_o rest_v upon_o his_o merit_n alone_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n by_o this_o then_o try_v and_o examine_v thy_o knowledge_n etc._n etc._n 2_o true_a save_a knowledge_n be_v humble_a and_o join_v with_o meekness_n of_o spirit_n for_o the_o more_o true_a knowledge_n a_o man_n have_v the_o more_o he_o discern_v his_o own_o ignorance_n yea_o and_o vileness_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o therefore_o you_o shall_v find_v those_o christian_n who_o be_v most_o eminent_a both_o in_o knowledge_n and_o grace_n to_o complain_v most_o as_o of_o their_o ignorance_n so_o of_o their_o own_o base_a and_o naughty_a heart_n as_o you_o may_v see_v in_o paul_n and_o other_o 8._o and_o no_o marvel_n consider_v that_o true_a save_a knowledge_n discover_v unto_o a_o man_n his_o own_o vileness_n and_o wretchedness_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o sin_n his_o own_o unworthiness_n yea_o his_o own_o emptiness_n and_o nothingness_n in_o regard_n of_o any_o goodness_n of_o his_o own_o whereas_o unsanctified_a knowledge_n be_v apt_a to_o puff_v a_o man_n up_o with_o pride_n and_o self-conceit_n even_o to_o the_o contemn_v and_o despise_v of_o other_o 1._o which_o the_o apostle_n plain_o express_v where_o he_o say_v knowledge_n puff_v up_o by_o this_o then_o try_v and_o examine_v thy_o knowledge_n whether_o it_o be_v a_o save_a knowledge_n or_o no._n 3_o true_a save_a knowledge_n be_v active_a and_o operative_a be_v ever_o accompany_v with_o practice_n and_o obedience_n so_o that_o it_o work_v reformation_n in_o the_o heart_n
thou_o be_v present_a at_o the_o ordinance_n put_v forth_o all_o the_o strength_n thou_o can_v in_o the_o partake_n thereof_o i_o mean_v the_o strength_n of_o thy_o affection_n for_o though_o thou_o be_v very_o weak_a yet_o if_o thou_o put_v forth_o thy_o weakness_n god_n will_v accept_v thereof_o content_v not_o thyself_o therefore_o with_o a_o mere_a outward_a participation_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n but_o let_v thy_o care_n be_v to_o bring_v up_o thy_o heart_n and_o thy_o affection_n to_o the_o ordinance_n and_o to_o put_v forth_o what_o strength_n thou_o can_v ii_o remember_v the_o death_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v christ_n command_n in_o the_o institution_n of_o this_o ordinance_n for_o say_v he_o 19_o this_o do_v in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o viz._n in_o remembrance_n of_o my_o bitter_a death_n and_o passion_n for_o the_o apostle_n paul_n explain_v this_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n apply_v it_o to_o his_o death_n 27._o and_o the_o show_v it_o forth_o this_o do_v say_v he_o in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o for_o as_o often_o as_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n you_o do_v show_v the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v so_o that_o this_o ordinance_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v institute_v for_o a_o solemn_a memorial_n of_o that_o great_a sacrifice_n the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n that_o his_o death_n may_v never_o be_v forget_v but_o be_v ever_o fresh_a in_o our_o memory_n and_o why_o must_v his_o death_n be_v thus_o remember_v sure_o because_o thereby_o be_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n ratify_v and_o seal_v our_o redemption_n purchase_v our_o sin_n expiate_v our_o reconciliation_n make_v with_o god_n and_o the_o foundation_n of_o our_o peace_n lay_v and_o therefore_o at_o the_o table_n let_v out_o thy_o heart_n in_o a_o serious_a meditation_n of_o the_o manifold_a suffering_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v the_o main_a business_n of_o this_o ordinance_n 〈◊〉_d and_o meditate_v not_o only_o of_o his_o suffering_n at_o his_o death_n but_o likewise_o in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o his_o life_n even_o from_o his_o cratch_n to_o his_o cross_n from_o his_o birth_n to_o his_o death_n for_o his_o whole_a life_n be_v a_o continual_a suffering_n meditate_v therefore_o of_o his_o mean_a birth_n and_o flight_n in_o his_o infancy_n of_o the_o manifold_a reproach_n which_o be_v cast_v upon_o he_o from_o time_n to_o time_n yea_o of_o his_o manifold_a persecution_n of_o their_o cruel_a handle_n of_o he_o at_o the_o time_n of_o his_o death_n when_o they_o apprehend_v he_o like_o a_o thief_n bind_v he_o arraign_v and_o condemn_v he_o as_o a_o malefactor_n buffet_v he_o with_o their_o hand_n beat_v he_o with_o staff_n scourge_v he_o with_o whip_n make_v loâ—g_a furrow_n on_o his_o back_n plait_v on_o his_o head_n a_o crown_n of_o sharp_a thorn_n lay_v a_o heavy_a cross_n on_o his_o back_n nail_v his_o hand_n and_o foot_n to_o that_o cross_n give_v he_o gall_n and_o vinegar_n to_o drink_v and_o sundry_a way_n much_o afflict_v he_o thus_o be_v his_o body_n break_v with_o torment_n in_o relation_n hereunto_o it_o be_v say_v of_o he_o that_o he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o sorrow_n 3_o and_o acquaint_v with_o grief_n especial_o when_o thou_o be_v present_a at_o the_o sacrament_n take_v a_o turn_n with_o christ_n in_o the_o garden_n by_o meditate_v of_o his_o bitter_a agony_n wherein_o he_o sweat_v drop_n of_o blood_n which_o be_v never_o read_v or_o hear_v of_o in_o any_o before_o or_o since_o yea_o the_o blood_n which_o christ_n then_o sweat_n be_v not_o thin_a watery_a blood_n 44_o but_o thick_a blood_n as_o st._n luke_n express_v it_o be_v in_o a_o agony_n his_o sweat_n be_v as_o it_o be_v great_a drop_n of_o blood_n signify_v fall_v down_o to_o the_o ground_n which_o latter_a clause_n show_v that_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n pass_v through_o the_o pore_n of_o his_o body_n in_o such_o a_o plentiful_a manner_n that_o it_o trickle_v down_o to_o the_o ground_n in_o great_a abundance_n so_o that_o not_o only_o the_o eye_n of_o christ_n but_o all_o the_o part_n of_o his_o body_n do_v seem_v to_o weep_v and_o that_o tear_n of_o blood_n as_o bernard_n speak_v in_o this_o sweat_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v three_o thing_n remarkable_a bern._n which_o do_v exceed_o set_v forth_o the_o greatness_n of_o his_o agony_n 1_o it_o be_v in_o a_o cold_a night_n for_o which_o cause_n afterward_o they_o kindle_v a_o fire_n in_o the_o high-priest_n hall_n 55_o and_o cold_a drive_v the_o blood_n inward_a 2_o he_o lay_v upon_o the_o cold_a ground_n which_o be_v enough_o to_o drive_v the_o blood_n inward_a 39_o 3_o he_o be_v in_o exceed_v great_a fear_n 33_o which_o natural_o draw_v the_o blood_n from_o the_o outward_a part_n to_o the_o heart_n and_o yet_o in_o a_o cold_a night_n 39_o lie_v upon_o the_o cold_a ground_n and_o be_v in_o great_a fear_n he_o sweat_v drop_n of_o blood_n who_o can_v imagine_v the_o bitterness_n of_o our_o saviour_n agony_n at_o that_o time_n and_o what_o be_v it_o which_o put_v he_o into_o that_o agony_n questionless_a the_o apprehension_n of_o what_o he_o be_v to_o suffer_v as_o appear_v by_o his_o prayer_n in_o his_o agony_n father_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a let_v this_o cup_n pass_v from_o i_o now_o if_o the_o apprehension_n of_o what_o he_o be_v to_o suffer_v be_v so_o bitter_a oh_o how_o bitter_a think_v you_o be_v his_o suffering_n upon_o the_o cross_n 46_o when_o he_o cry_v out_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o which_o word_n do_v not_o imply_v that_o the_o deity_n be_v sever_v from_o the_o humanity_n but_o that_o the_o father_n have_v withdraw_v from_o he_o all_o sensible_a feel_n of_o his_o love_a favour_n have_v restrain_v the_o influence_n of_o those_o beam_n which_o may_v any_o way_n refresh_v his_o trouble_a soul_n 12_o so_o that_o christ_n may_v well_o take_v up_o the_o word_n of_o the_o captive_a jew_n and_o say_v behold_v and_o see_v if_o there_o be_v any_o sorrow_n like_a to_o my_o sorrow_n wherewith_o the_o lord_n have_v afflict_v i_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o fierce_a anger_n these_o thing_n call_v to_o mind_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o administration_n of_o the_o sacrament_n not_o only_a when_o thou_o be_v eat_v the_o bread_n and_o drink_v the_o wine_n but_o also_o when_o thou_o see_v the_o bread_n break_v and_o the_o wine_n pour_v forth_o than_o thou_o shall_v think_v how_o christ_n body_n be_v break_v with_o torment_n and_o his_o blood_n shed_v for_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o also_o when_o thou_o see_v other_o take_v the_o bread_n and_o the_o wine_n thou_o shall_v then_o be_v steep_v thy_o thought_n in_o the_o meditation_n of_o christ_n bitter_a death_n and_o manifold_a suffering_n this_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n death_n at_o the_o sacrament_n must_v not_o be_v a_o bare_a historical_a remembrance_n thereof_o content_v thyself_o with_o a_o remembrance_n of_o the_o history_n of_o christ_n death_n as_o it_o be_v set_v forth_o by_o the_o evangelist_n but_o it_o must_v be_v a_o operative_a and_o practical_a remembrance_n work_v up_o thy_o heart_n 1_o to_o a_o unfeigned_a love_n of_o god_n who_o out_o of_o his_o free_a grace_n and_o rich_a mercy_n do_v send_v his_o dear_o belove_a son_n out_o of_o his_o own_o bosom_n into_o the_o world_n to_o take_v our_o nature_n upon_o he_o and_o therein_o to_o die_v a_o bitter_a curse_a death_n for_o man_n redemption_n who_o can_v sufficient_o admire_v the_o riches_n of_o god_n love_n to_o man_n therein_o how_o may_v we_o with_o david_n cry_v out_o and_o say_v lord_n what_o be_v maâ—_n that_o thou_o be_v mindful_a of_o he_o especial_o that_o thou_o shall_v be_v so_o mindful_a of_o he_o as_o to_o give_v the_o son_n of_o thy_o love_n to_o suffer_v a_o curse_a death_n upon_o the_o cross_n to_o to_o bear_v the_o intolerable_a burden_n of_o his_o father_n wrath_n due_a to_o our_o sin_n which_o make_v he_o sweat_v drop_n of_o blood_n in_o the_o garden_n and_o to_o cry_v out_o on_o the_o cross_n my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o oh_o how_o shall_v this_o ravish_v our_o soul_n with_o admiration_n of_o so_o great_a love_n and_o inflame_v our_o heart_n with_o love_n
that_o they_o do_v even_o break_v he_o again_o for_o we_o use_v to_o say_v of_o one_o that_o have_v endure_v much_o pain_n or_o other_o great_a grief_n that_o have_v waste_v his_o flesh_n or_o dry_v up_o his_o blood_n see_v how_o he_o be_v break_v and_o in_o this_o sense_n also_o may_v christ_n be_v say_v to_o be_v break_v again_o when_o thou_o see_v the_o minister_n pour_v out_o of_o the_o wine_n than_o exercise_n and_o actuate_v thy_o faith_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o shed_v thereof_o which_o indeed_o show_v the_o extent_n of_o christ_n suffering_n even_o to_o the_o take_v away_o of_o his_o life_n which_o be_v the_o further_a extent_n of_o a_o man_n suffering_n in_o this_o world_n these_o two_o therefore_o the_o break_n of_o christ_n body_n and_o the_o shed_n of_o his_o blood_n be_v fit_o join_v together_o the_o former_a to_o show_v the_o extremity_n of_o christ_n suffering_n the_o latter_a the_o extent_n thereof_o even_o as_o far_o as_o possible_o christ_n with_o all_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n to_o every_o believe_a communicant_a i_o do_v not_o say_v carnal_o but_o real_o not_o the_o flesh_n of_o christ_n but_o and_o receive_v he_o as_o his_o all-sufficient_a saviour_n and_o sovereign_a rest_v upon_o his_o perfect_a righteousness_n and_o all-sufficient_a sacrifice_n for_o the_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n here_o and_o for_o eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n hereafter_o ii_o the_o necessity_n of_o this_o grace_n of_o faith_n to_o every_o communicant_a appear_v 1._o because_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n in_o any_o holy_a ordinance_n 6._o as_o the_o apostle_n express_v it_o but_o true_a faith_n will_v commend_v both_o our_o person_n and_o service_n unto_o gâ—d_n so_o that_o they_o shall_v find_v acceptance_n with_o he_o though_o they_o be_v full_a of_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n 24._o this_o make_v abel_n sacrifice_n so_o acceptable_a to_o god_n if_o therefore_o thou_o come_v to_o this_o ordinance_n without_o faith_n instead_o of_o pacify_v god_n thou_o shall_v purchase_v his_o heavy_a displeasure_n 2._o except_o thou_o have_v faith_n before_o thou_o approach_v to_o that_o ordinance_n the_o sacrament_n come_v but_o like_o a_o seal_n to_o a_o blank_a and_o serve_v only_o to_o seal_v up_o thy_o unbelief_n to_o condemnation_n so_o that_o faith_n be_v necessary_o require_v of_o every_o worthy_a communicant_a before_o he_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n supper_n for_o that_o ordinance_n be_v not_o institute_v for_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n but_o for_o the_o strengthen_n thereof_o a_o man_n may_v come_v to_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n though_o he_o be_v faithless_a because_o it_o be_v a_o ordinance_n institute_v by_o god_n for_o the_o beget_n of_o faith_n 17._o according_a to_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n faith_n come_v by_o hear_v but_o none_o be_v to_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n but_o such_o as_o have_v faith_n wrought_v in_o they_o because_o that_o be_v not_o a_o ordinance_n institute_v by_o god_n for_o the_o beget_n of_o faith_n but_o rather_o for_o the_o strengthen_n thereof_o it_o be_v not_o institute_v for_o such_o as_o be_v out_o of_o christ_n to_o bring_v they_o in_o but_o for_o such_o aâ—_n be_v in_o christ_n to_o bring_v they_o up_o in_o he_o as_o a_o man_n must_v be_v bear_v before_o he_o can_v eat_v so_o he_o must_v be_v beget_v again_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n before_o he_o can_v feed_v upon_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n for_o his_o spiritual_a nourishment_n i_o do_v not_o say_v that_o all_o who_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n must_v have_v the_o same_o measure_n of_o faith_n but_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o they_o all_o have_v the_o fame_n truth_n of_o faith_n iii_o for_o the_o three_o particular_a the_o trial_n of_o thy_o faith_n whether_o it_o be_v true_a and_o save_a thou_o may_v know_v it_o by_o these_o two_o character_n to_o omit_v many_o other_o 1._o true_a faith_n do_v receive_v christ_n in_o all_o his_o office_n not_o only_o as_o a_o priest_n to_o make_v satisfaction_n and_o intercession_n for_o we_o but_o also_o as_o a_o prophet_n to_o teach_v and_o instruct_v we_o and_o as_o a_o king_n to_o rule_v and_o govern_v we_o the_o true_a believer_n do_v as_o willing_o cast_v himself_o at_o the_o foot_n of_o christ_n in_o subjection_n to_o he_o as_o into_o the_o arm_n of_o christ_n for_o salvation_n from_o he_o he_o be_v as_o willing_a to_o serve_v jesus_n christ_n as_o to_o be_v save_v by_o he_o as_o desirous_a to_o submit_v to_o his_o service_n as_o to_o enjoy_v his_o privilege_n by_o this_o therefore_o may_v thou_o try_v the_o truth_n of_o thy_o faith_n 2._o true_a faith_n be_v a_o heart-purifying_a grace_n it_o purify_v the_o heart_n this_o character_n of_o faith_n the_o apostle_n peter_n express_v act._n 15._o 9_o purify_n their_o heart_n by_o faith_n faith_n purify_n the_o heart_n imply_v two_o thing_n 1_o that_o the_o believer_n make_v conscience_n of_o his_o inward_a thought_n whereas_o unbeliever_n with_o the_o pharisee_n make_v clean_o the_o outside_n of_o the_o cup_n labour_v to_o keep_v themselves_o from_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a sin_n but_o suffer_v their_o heart_n to_o range_v and_o rove_v into_o a_o world_n of_o vain_a and_o wanton_a thought_n of_o profane_a and_o fruitless_a imagination_n and_o that_o without_o any_o remorse_n or_o check_v of_o conscience_n 2._o that_o faith_n put_v a_o purify_n disposition_n into_o the_o heart_n so_o that_o it_o loathe_v and_o detest_v sin_n yea_o and_o strive_v against_o it_o though_o it_o can_v altogether_o purge_v and_o free_v itself_o from_o sin_n when_o the_o heart_n be_v once_o season_v with_o faith_n it_o will_v not_o willing_o harbour_v sin_n but_o labour_v to_o work_v it_o out_o more_o and_o more_o by_o this_o than_o try_v the_o truth_n and_o soundness_n of_o thy_o faith_n whether_o it_o have_v wrought_v in_o thou_o a_o purge_n purify_n disposition_n to_o strive_v against_o thy_o corruption_n and_o to_o work_v they_o out_o of_o thy_o heart_n more_o and_o more_o iii_o the_o three_o grace_n necessary_o require_v of_o every_o communicant_a be_v repentance_n concern_v which_o i_o shall_v show_v 1._o the_o nature_n of_o repentance_n what_o it_o be_v 2._o the_o necessity_n thereof_o to_o a_o in_o reason_n the_o fountain_n must_v be_v cleanse_v and_o purge_v before_o that_o which_o issue_v and_o stream_v from_o it_o can_v be_v wholesome_a there_o must_v be_v therefore_o first_o a_o renew_a heart_n before_o there_o can_v be_v a_o reform_a life_n for_o it_o can_v be_v that_o the_o stream_n of_o our_o action_n shall_v be_v good_a if_o the_o fountain_n of_o our_o heart_n be_v corrupt_a hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o prophet_n so_o often_o call_v for_o the_o cleanse_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o apostle_n for_o the_o renew_n and_o change_v thereof_o without_o which_o all_o external_a and_o outward_a reformation_n be_v but_o mere_a pharisaical_a ostentation_n in_o the_o last_o place_n be_v add_v a_o reformation_n of_o the_o life_n and_o action_n without_o for_o as_o to_o make_v some_o outward_a show_n of_o reformation_n without_o reform_v the_o heart_n within_o be_v but_o pharisaical_a ostentation_n whereby_o we_o deceive_v other_o so_o to_o pretend_v a_o inward_a reformation_n without_o the_o outward_a fruit_n of_o amendment_n be_v but_o mere_a folly_n whereby_o we_o deceive_v ourselves_o for_o it_o can_v be_v that_o reformation_n shall_v be_v
true_o root_v and_o ground_v in_o the_o heart_n but_o that_o it_o will_v bud_v forth_o and_o show_v itself_o in_o the_o fruit_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n that_o man_n therefore_o deceive_v himself_o who_o think_v his_o heart_n be_v purge_v and_o reform_v when_o his_o life_n be_v pollute_v for_o as_o the_o fruit_n declare_v the_o tree_n so_o the_o action_n of_o man_n manifest_v their_o affection_n ii_o the_o necessity_n of_o this_o grace_n of_o repentance_n in_o every_o worthy_a communicant_a upon_o his_o approach_n to_o the_o lord_n table_n appear_v because_o we_o come_v to_o receive_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o sin_n but_o to_o offer_v to_o receive_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o sin_n without_o turn_v from_o sin_n be_v to_o count_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n a_o unholy_a thing_n we_o be_v not_o ignorant_a that_o one_o main_a end_n of_o our_o approach_n to_o the_o lord_n table_n be_v to_o receive_v christ_n as_o he_o have_v offer_v himself_o a_o sacrifice_n and_o price_n of_o redemption_n for_o our_o sin_n for_o so_o he_o be_v set_v forth_o in_o that_o sacrament_n the_o break_n of_o the_o bread_n and_o pour_v out_o of_o the_o wine_n import_v as_o much_o yea_o christ_n express_o say_v of_o the_o sacramental_a cup_n 28._o this_o be_v my_o blood_n which_o be_v shed_v for_o remission_n of_o sin_n now_o he_o that_o look_v for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n must_v have_v a_o full_a purpose_n and_o according_a to_o his_o purpose_n a_o faithful_a and_o resolute_a endeavour_n to_o forsake_v sin_n which_o be_v and_o will_v be_v the_o mind_n of_o every_o true_a penitent_a and_o so_o also_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v the_o lord_n therefore_o require_v of_o they_o who_o bring_v their_o sacrifice_n to_o he_o for_o pardon_n that_o they_o take_v away_o the_o evil_a of_o their_o god_n so_o gracious_a a_o father_n so_o bountiful_a a_o lord_n and_o master_n i_o deny_v not_o but_o it_o be_v good_a and_o commendable_a to_o grieve_v and_o mourn_v for_o sin_n in_o respect_n of_o punishment_n for_o fear_v of_o hell_n for_o it_o be_v a_o good_a preparatory_a to_o a_o godly_a sorrow_n but_o we_o must_v not_o rest_v therein_o by_o this_o therefore_o try_v and_o examine_v the_o discourse_n and_o treat_v of_o they_o apart_o show_v you_o 1._o the_o necessity_n of_o they_o to_o a_o worthy_a partake_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n 2_o some_o sing_v and_o note_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o they_o i._n first_o for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n that_o be_v necessary_o require_v of_o every_o communicant_a because_o the_o great_a evidence_n that_o ever_o be_v give_v of_o god_n love_n be_v there_o set_v before_o we_o for_o jesus_n christ_n the_o only_a son_n of_o god_n and_o saviour_n of_o man_n be_v the_o great_a evidence_n of_o god_n love_n that_o ever_o be_v or_o can_v be_v shall_v god_n set_v himself_o to_o make_v another_o world_n and_o to_o confer_v on_o that_o world_n a_o great_a gift_n than_o he_o have_v confer_v on_o this_o world_n namely_o his_o only_a beget_v and_o dear_o belove_a son_n we_o may_v bold_o say_v he_o can_v not_o neither_o can_v the_o creature_n receive_v nor_o the_o creator_n give_v a_o great_a gift_n and_o that_o both_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o gift_n itself_o and_o also_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o need_n wherein_o we_o stand_v thereof_o and_o of_o the_o good_a we_o reap_v thereby_o therefore_o god_n love_v in_o this_o evidence_n thereof_o be_v so_o set_v out_o as_o goes_z beyond_o all_o expression_n god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n 16._o that_o he_o give_v his_o only_a beget_v son_n etc._n etc._n so_o unutterable_o again_o unto_o he_o who_o do_v and_o suffer_v so_o much_o for_o we_o how_o shall_v the_o meditation_n of_o the_o manifold_a suffering_n of_o christ_n especial_o of_o his_o bitter_a death_n and_o passion_n work_n in_o we_o a_o holy_a passion_n of_o love_n 3_o the_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n death_n shall_v work_v in_o we_o a_o care_n to_o please_v he_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v willing_a religious_a duty_n they_o be_v frequent_a in_o hear_v pray_v read_v partake_v of_o the_o lord_n supper_n etc._n etc._n and_o hereupon_o flatter_v themselves_o with_o a_o hope_n of_o salvation_n whereas_o their_o best_a service_n shall_v they_o be_v weigh_v in_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n will_v be_v find_v too_o light_a and_o insufficient_a to_o salvation_n be_v full_a of_o weakness_n infirmity_n and_o imperfection_n for_o which_o the_o lord_n may_v just_o condemn_v they_o shall_v he_o deal_v with_o they_o according_a to_o the_o rigour_n of_o his_o justice_n 6_o other_o build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o sorrow_n and_o humiliation_n find_v their_o heart_n in_o some_o measure_n affect_v with_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n especial_o if_o they_o do_v but_o drop_v a_o few_o tear_n oh_o than_o they_o flatter_v themselves_o with_o a_o hope_n both_o of_o the_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o of_o eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n which_o they_o ground_n upon_o that_o promise_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o labour_n 28._o and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n conceive_v that_o christ_n have_v promise_v rest_n and_o peace_n yea_o life_n and_o salvation_n unto_o all_o that_o find_v their_o heart_n affect_v with_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n without_o any_o more_o ado_n whereas_o i_o conceive_v it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o a_o promise_n of_o rest_n and_o salvation_n unto_o humble_a soul_n as_o a_o invitation_n unto_o such_o because_o they_o be_v most_o apt_a to_o be_v discourage_v to_o come_v unto_o christ_n from_o who_o alone_a
peace_n and_o comfort_n rest_n and_o salvation_n be_v to_o be_v have_v such_o therefore_o as_o have_v find_v their_o heart_n affect_v with_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n do_v rest_n satisfy_v therewith_o and_o seek_v not_o out_o for_o jesus_n christ_n they_o be_v like_a to_o sit_v down_o without_o christ_n and_o so_o fall_v short_a both_o of_o true_a peace_n here_o and_o of_o salvation_n hereafter_o 7_o other_o bottom_n their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o partial_a repentance_n i_o mean_v their_o leave_v and_o forsake_v some_o sin_n when_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o witting_o live_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o other_o sin_n which_o in_o truth_n be_v but_o a_o seigned_a and_o hypocritical_a repentance_n like_o that_o of_o herod_n who_o upon_o john_n baptist_n preach_v be_v say_v to_o leave_v many_o sin_n but_o yet_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n part_n with_o his_o herodias_n his_o darling_n and_o belove_a sin_n nay_o though_o your_o repentance_n be_v true_a and_o full_a yet_o if_o you_o stay_v there_o and_o not_o look_v beyond_o it_o unto_o jesus_n christ_n you_o will_v fall_v short_a of_o salvation_n 8_o other_o bottom_n their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o work_n of_o charity_n think_v to_o purchase_v heaven_n by_o their_o good_a work_n and_o so_o whole_o exclude_v christ_n merit_n which_o they_o ground_n upon_o that_o sentence_n of_o absolution_n pronounce_v by_o our_o saviour_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n unto_o his_o elect_n 34_o wherein_o he_o give_v heaven_n to_o they_o who_o have_v express_v their_o whereby_o they_o do_v evidence_n their_o faith_n to_o be_v a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n which_o manifest_v its_o life_n by_o those_o work_n of_o charity_n so_o that_o work_v of_o charity_n in_o themselves_o can_v be_v no_o good_a ground_n to_o bottom_v your_o salvation_n upon_o but_o only_a faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n which_o be_v ever_o accompany_v with_o work_n of_o charity_n if_o true_a and_o sound_a 9_o other_o bottom_n their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n they_o will_v confess_v themselves_o to_o be_v poor_a wretched_a sinful_a creature_n but_o they_o hope_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n will_v pardon_v their_o sin_n and_o accept_v their_o poor_a service_n thus_o many_o make_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o eik_v out_o their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o so_o both_o put_v together_o they_o think_v will_v be_v a_o mean_n of_o atonement_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n yea_o and_o of_o obtain_v eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n but_o such_o do_v wonderful_o mistake_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o god_n mercy_n which_o be_v not_o to_o eik_v out_o our_o righteousness_n but_o to_o show_v we_o our_o unrighteousness_n and_o misery_n and_o then_o to_o show_v we_o jesus_n christ_n the_o perfection_n of_o his_o righteousness_n the_o all-sufficiency_n of_o his_o sacrifice_n with_o his_o willingness_n to_o receive_v all_o poor_a sinner_n that_o will_v come_v unto_o he_o and_o then_o to_o stir_v up_o our_o heart_n to_o receive_v jesus_n christ_n as_o our_o priest_n prophet_n and_o king_n and_o to_o rest_v upon_o he_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n and_o thus_o may_v i_o go_v on_o show_v you_o the_o many_o false_a and_o rot_a foundation_n upon_o which_o the_o great_a part_n of_o man_n do_v build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n whereas_o in_o truth_n christ_n be_v the_o only_a true_a solid_a foundation_n whereon_o we_o can_v safe_o build_v the_o hope_n of_o our_o salvation_n 11_o and_o therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n other_o foundation_n can_v no_o man_n lay_v thâ—â—_n that_o be_v lay_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n intimate_v christ_n to_o be_v the_o only_a true_a foundation_n so_o that_o he_o be_v the_o wise_a serpent_n be_v perfect_o cure_v of_o the_o sting_n of_o the_o fiery_a serpent_n in_o like_a manner_n all_o poor_a sinner_n sensible_a of_o the_o sting_n of_o sin_n by_o look_v with_o the_o eye_n of_o have_v attain_v to_o this_o save_a grace_n of_o faith_n the_o mean_v god_n have_v sanctify_v thereunto_o may_v be_v bring_v to_o three_o head_n 1_o the_o remove_n of_o some_o let_n and_o impediment_n
