austin_n sometime_o understand_v these_o word_n of_o the_o eucharist_n yet_o he_o do_v not_o so_o understand_v they_o as_o if_o every_o one_o who_o partake_v of_o the_o eucharist_n do_v also_o eat_v and_o so_o st._n austin_n understand_v it_o although_o he_o apply_v these_o word_n sometime_o to_o the_o eucharist_n inasmuch_o as_o he_o deny_v that_o the_o wicked_a do_v eat_v the_o flesh_n and_o drink_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n although_o with_o their_o mouth_n they_o take_v the_o sacrament_n of_o his_o body_n and_o blood_n but_o because_o this_o spiritual_a eat_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o salvation_n be_v by_o no_o mean_n confine_v to_o the_o participation_n of_o the_o eucharist_n and_o because_o many_o do_v not_o partake_v spiritual_o in_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n such_o another_o answer_n that_o the_o samaritan_n woman_n make_v to_o a_o like_a speech_n of_o our_o lord_n as_o you_o may_v see_v ch._n 4._o 5_o 13_o 14_o 15._o 35._o jesus_n answer_v if_o you_o with_o they_o when_o they_o once_o perceive_v that_o his_o great_a business_n be_v to_o save_v their_o soul_n some_o also_o of_o our_o lord_n disciple_n be_v of_o this_o disposition_n and_o it_o have_v the_o same_o effect_n upon_o they_o as_o you_o may_v see_v v._o 64._o 37._o so_o that_o the_o reason_n why_o you_o believe_v i_o not_o be_v because_o you_o be_v not_o prepare_v by_o a_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n to_o receive_v the_o truth_n and_o now_o i_o tell_v you_o that_o the_o father_n who_o will_v have_v all_o to_o be_v save_v do_v not_o expect_v that_o i_o shall_v give_v a_o good_a account_n of_o any_o other_o person_n but_o such_o as_o be_v of_o a_o towardly_a and_o teachable_a disposition_n these_o he_o have_v commit_v to_o my_o special_a care_n and_o they_o will_v learn_v of_o i_o and_o not_o one_o of_o they_o shall_v want_v mean_n requisite_a for_o his_o conviction_n and_o instruction_n but_o though_o i_o come_v to_o save_v the_o world_n v._n 51._o i_o be_o not_o bind_v to_o bring_v those_o to_o faith_n and_o to_o salvation_n that_o obstinate_o set_v themselves_o against_o all_o that_o evidence_n which_o be_v sufficient_a for_o honest_a mind_n v._o 37._o the_o father_n will_v believe_v and_o become_v his_o disciple_n and_o none_o else_o therefore_o the_o father_n give_v those_o only_a to_o christ_n who_o be_v prepare_v by_o a_o honest_a heart_n and_o willingness_n to_o learn_v the_o phrase_n be_v a_o allusion_n to_o what_o be_v often_o see_v among_o we_o i_o e._n to_o a_o man_n commit_v the_o care_n of_o educate_v a_o hopeful_a and_o promise_a child_n to_o a_o wise_a and_o skilful_a master_n with_o the_o expectation_n of_o have_v a_o good_a account_n of_o he_o at_o last_o not_o but_o that_o these_o expression_n also_o imply_v the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o be_v from_o the_o lord_n neither_o do_v this_o hinder_a but_o that_o our_o lord_n must_v be_v understand_v to_o have_v do_v what_o be_v fit_a to_o prepare_v those_o who_o he_o find_v so_o averse_a as_o these_o man_n be_v see_v notes_n on_o v._o 45._o but_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o if_o man_n obstinate_o persist_v in_o their_o sensual_a and_o worldly_a this_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n they_o be_v to_o take_v pain_n with_o themselves_o about_o for_o the_o outward_a evidence_n be_v give_v they_o whether_o they_o will_v or_o not_o but_o the_o inward_a understand_v he_o st._n peter_n answer_n will_v sure_o have_v be_v to_o this_o purpose_n whatever_o appearance_n there_o be_v of_o inhumanity_n and_o contradiction_n in_o give_v thy_o flesh_n to_o be_v eat_v and_o thy_o blood_n to_o be_v drink_v for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n yet_o we_o believe_v that_o we_o shall_v eat_v thy_o natural_a flesh_n and_o drink_v etc._n etc._n because_o thou_o have_v say_v it_o for_o though_o this_o hard_a say_v stagger_v those_o man_n that_o be_v go_v off_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o stagger_v we_o at_o all_o this_o have_v be_v a_o confession_n of_o faith_n suitable_a to_o the_o occasion_n and_o to_o the_o spirit_n of_o st._n peter_n if_o he_o have_v understand_v our_o saviour_n as_o the_o jew_n do_v at_o least_o he_o will_v have_v use_v those_o ought_v all_o of_o we_o very_o frequent_o to_o consider_v not_o slight_v it_o because_o it_o be_v very_o plain_a but_o make_v much_o of_o it_o both_o because_o it_o be_v very_o useful_a and_o strong_o speak_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o receive_v his_o whole_a doctrine_n and_o submit_v to_o it_o in_o heart_n and_o life_n which_o whosoever_o do_v shall_v not_o die_v but_o live_v eternal_o 51._o when_o you_o be_v fill_v with_o that_o provision_n i_o make_v for_o your_o body_n v._o 51._o without_o do_v great_a violence_n to_o our_o saviour_n word_n in_o this_o place_n they_o can_v be_v so_o understand_v as_o if_o he_o promise_v to_o turn_v bread_n into_o his_o flesh_n for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n as_o they_o must_v suppose_v who_o will_v ground_v the_o roman_a doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n upon_o this_o place_n for_o if_o some_o such_o change_n be_v here_o to_o be_v understand_v it_o must_v be_v quite_o contrary_a viz._n a_o change_n of_o his_o flesh_n into_o bread_n inasmuch_o as_o he_o call_v himself_o the_o live_a bread_n and_o say_v that_o the_o bread_n which_o he_o will_v give_v be_v his_o flesh_n that_o he_o will_v give_v for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n if_o therefore_o it_o be_v insist_v upon_o that_o the_o word_n be_v to_o be_v proper_o understand_v and_o that_o therefore_o a_o change_n must_v be_v suppose_v of_o one_o substance_n into_o another_o it_o must_v not_o be_v of_o bread_n into_o the_o substance_n of_o christ_n flesh_n but_o of_o christ_n flesh_n into_o the_o substance_n of_o bread_n which_o interpretation_n i_o think_v no_o body_n have_v ever_o yet_o be_v so_o unreasonable_a as_o to_o contend_v for_o what_o account_v therefore_o be_v to_o be_v give_v of_o these_o word_n but_o this_o that_o our_o saviour_n have_v hitherto_o pursue_v a_o figurative_a way_n of_o speak_v upon_o the_o occasion_n so_o often_o mention_v go_v on_o in_o the_o same_o way_n of_o expression_n to_o lay_v before_o they_o that_o principal_a doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o christ_n be_v to_o die_v for_o the_o salvation_n of_o mankind_n which_o be_v the_o plain_a sense_n of_o give_v his_o flesh_n to_o be_v bread_n for_o we_o for_o he_o give_v his_o flesh_n for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n when_o he_o give_v himself_o to_o the_o death_n for_o we_o all_o and_o his_o flesh_n so_o give_v be_v bread_n to_o we_o because_o his_o death_n be_v the_o mean_n of_o our_o live_n for_o ever_o and_o whereas_o christ_n mention_v the_o give_v of_o his_o flesh_n for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n as_o a_o future_a thing_n and_o likewise_o the_o give_v of_o his_o flesh_n to_o be_v bread_n it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o because_o the_o former_a be_v to_o be_v perform_v on_o the_o cross_n only_o therefore_o the_o latter_a be_v to_o be_v perform_v only_o in_o the_o eucharist_n this_o i_o say_v do_v not_o follow_v unless_o it_o can_v be_v prove_v that_o he_o promise_v in_o those_o word_n to_o give_v we_o his_o natural_a flesh_n to_o be_v eat_v proper_o in_o the_o eucharist_n which_o i_o have_v show_v be_v impossible_a to_o be_v prove_v from_o hence_o still_o therefore_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v not_o a_o corporal_n but_o a_o spiritual_a eat_n and_o whereas_o our_o saviour_n say_v the_o bread_n which_o i_o will_v give_v be_v my_o flesh_n which_o i_o will_v give_v for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n the_o meaning_n be_v this_o that_o his_o flesh_n shall_v be_v give_v for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n once_o for_o all_o but_o the_o spiritual_a food_n or_o nourishment_n which_o his_o flesh_n so_o give_v shall_v afford_v will_v be_v give_v evermore_o not_o only_o in_o the_o eucharist_n but_o in_o the_o whole_a ministration_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o hold_v forth_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n
to_o be_v believe_v and_o offer_v the_o bless_a fruit_n and_o advantage_n thereof_o to_o all_o that_o be_v dispose_v to_o partake_v of_o they_o it_o be_v also_o object_v against_o this_o interpretation_n that_o if_o the_o doctrine_n of_o our_o lord_n passion_n and_o the_o believe_v of_o it_o be_v here_o mean_v no_o reason_n can_v be_v give_v why_o our_o saviour_n shall_v speak_v in_o the_o future_a tense_n the_o bread_n which_o i_o will_v give_v be_v my_o flesh_n since_o this_o spiritual_a food_n be_v no_o less_o give_v before_o the_o incarnation_n and_o passion_n of_o christ_n than_o afterward_o for_o the_o patriarch_n live_v and_o be_v nourish_v by_o faith_n and_o therefore_o if_o spiritual_a eat_n be_v only_o intend_v christ_n seem_v to_o promise_v a_o new_a thing_n which_o yet_o he_o have_v give_v of_o old_a so_o that_o his_o promise_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o give_v his_o natural_a flesh_n to_o be_v eat_v which_o be_v never_o do_v before_o the_o eucharist_n this_o be_v the_o objection_n and_o a_o very_a strange_a one_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v to_o he_o that_o shall_v consider_v 1._o that_o our_o saviour_n speak_v in_o the_o future_a tense_n to_o the_o woman_n of_o samaria_n where_o yet_o the_o expression_n be_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v figurative_a and_o the_o meaning_n of_o it_o to_o be_v believe_v whosoever_o drink_v of_o the_o water_n that_o i_o shall_v give_v he_o shall_v never_o thirst_v but_o the_o water_n that_o i_o shall_v give_v he_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d shall_v be_v in_o he_o a_o well_o etc._n etc._n now_o will_v not_o this_o be_v rare_a argue_v our_o lord_n say_v i_o will_v give_v water_n therefore_o he_o promise_v something_o that_o he_o have_v never_o give_v before_o therefore_o spiritual_a drink_n or_o believe_v be_v not_o mean_v because_o the_o patriarch_n believe_v of_o old_a therefore_o the_o promise_n be_v to_o be_v take_v literal_o and_o proper_o and_o yet_o this_o be_v that_o very_a argument_n to_o prove_v the_o literal_a sense_n in_o this_o verse_n but_o then_o 2._o our_o lord_n speak_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o present_a eat_v his_o flesh_n and_o drink_v his_o blood_n in_o the_o 53d_o and_o 54th_o verse_n and_o therefore_o the_o argument_n from_o the_o future_a tense_n to_o prove_v that_o he_o speak_v proper_o of_o the_o eucharist_n be_v insufficient_a 3._o suppose_v that_o all_o have_v be_v future_a and_o that_o something_o be_v promise_v more_o than_o have_v be_v former_o give_v yet_o it_o follow_v not_o that_o christ_n speak_v proper_o of_o the_o eucharist_n much_o less_o of_o give_v his_o flesh_n proper_o to_o be_v eat_v there_o for_o although_o the_o father_n believe_v of_o old_a yet_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o passion_n be_v never_o clear_o understand_v by_o the_o faithful_a before_o our_o saviour_n time_n no_o nor_o as_o yet_o by_o his_o own_o disciple_n our_o saviour_n do_v now_o and_o then_o mention_v it_o and_o here_o he_o give_v they_o some_o intimation_n of_o it_o which_o they_o understand_v not_o then_o so_o well_o as_o they_o do_v afterward_o see_v note_n on_o v._o 53._o himself_o say_v to_o they_o many_o prophet_n and_o righteous_a man_n have_v desire_v to_o see_v those_o thing_n that_o you_o have_v see_v and_o have_v not_o see_v they_o and_o to_o hear_v those_o thing_n that_o you_o hear_v and_o have_v not_o hear_v they_o matth._n 13.17_o and_o yet_o his_o disciple_n hitherto_o have_v attain_v to_o a_o very_a imperfect_a knowledge_n of_o christianity_n to_o what_o they_o have_v afterward_o although_o therefore_o the_o good_a man_n of_o old_a be_v justify_v by_o faith_n and_o see_v the_o promise_v afar_o off_o and_o have_v some_o general_a intimation_n of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o whether_o the_o particular_a object_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v not_o a_o new_a thing_n worthy_a of_o christ_n promise_n i_o leave_v indifferent_a man_n to_o judge_v last_o it_o have_v be_v say_v that_o the_o natural_a flesh_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o be_v give_v or_o offer_v upon_o the_o cross_n substantial_o or_o proper_o for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o the_o same_o flesh_n be_v to_o be_v give_v with_o the_o same_o propriety_n to_o be_v bread_n for_o we_o and_o to_o be_v eat_v by_o we_o viz._n in_o the_o eucharist_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v 1._o as_o before_o that_o this_o argue_v will_v conclude_v more_o than_o they_o desire_v who_o urge_v it_o for_o if_o the_o former_a clause_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v in_o the_o same_o strictness_n and_o propriety_n of_o word_n with_o the_o latter_a clause_n than_o the_o flesh_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o become_v bread_n proper_o for_o he_o say_v the_o bread_n which_o i_o will_v give_v be_v my_o flesh_n but_o 2._o it_o be_v much_o more_o reasonable_a to_o understand_v the_o give_v of_o his_o flesh_n to_o be_v bread_n according_a to_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o kind_n of_o expression_n throughout_o the_o whole_a discourse_n and_o our_o adversary_n do_v acknowledge_v that_o those_o passage_n i_o be_o the_o bread_n of_o life_n he_o that_o eat_v of_o this_o bread_n shall_v live_v for_o ever_o that_o be_v all_o of_o this_o kind_n from_o verse_n 32._o to_o this_o very_a clause_n in_o verse_n 51._o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o spiritual_a eat_n i._n e._n of_o believe_v since_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n give_v no_o manner_n of_o intimation_n that_o he_o change_v his_o style_n there_o be_v more_o reason_n to_o interpret_v those_o word_n of_o give_v his_o flesh_n to_o be_v bread_n and_o of_o eat_v his_o flesh_n and_o drink_v his_o blood_n in_o a_o sense_n agreeable_a to_o that_o wherein_o eat_v he_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v all_o along_o before_o than_o to_o understand_v they_o proper_o that_o be_v to_o say_v of_o bodily_a eat_n although_o it_o be_v the_o flesh_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v give_v to_o be_v eat_v that_o flesh_n which_o be_v substantial_o and_o proper_o give_v for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n 52._o upon_o this_o the_o jew_n dispute_v against_o he_o afresh_o the_o great_a part_n of_o they_o take_v his_o last_o word_n in_o a_o gross_a sense_n as_o if_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o give_v they_o his_o flesh_n to_o eat_v with_o their_o tooth_n and_o to_o swallow_v it_o down_o their_o throat_n as_o their_o forefather_n have_v eat_v manna_n and_o as_o they_o have_v eat_v in_o the_o wilderness_n the_o day_n before_o and_o upon_o this_o advantage_n which_o they_o think_v they_o have_v against_o he_o they_o exclaim_v as_o if_o he_o have_v speak_v absurd_o and_o inhuman_o and_o teach_v his_o disciple_n to_o devour_v man_n flesh_n 53._o but_o notwithstanding_o this_o perverse_a construction_n of_o his_o word_n jesus_n do_v not_o think_v fit_a to_o deliver_v his_o meaning_n in_o such_o proper_a expression_n as_o may_v avoid_v all_o the_o cavil_n of_o these_o unreasonable_a man_n but_o defer_v for_o a_o while_n a_o further_a explication_n of_o himself_o he_o vehement_o repeat_v his_o doctrine_n under_o such_o expression_n and_o figurative_a speech_n as_o they_o have_v hitherto_o give_v he_o just_a occasion_n to_o use_v only_o to_o signify_v that_o he_o be_v to_o die_v a_o violent_a and_o bloody_a death_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o mankind_n to_o that_o expression_n of_o eat_v his_o flesh_n he_o add_v another_o of_o drink_v his_o blood_n affirm_v that_o except_o they_o do_v this_o they_o must_v not_o expect_v eternal_a life_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v except_o you_o believe_v the_o merit_n of_o that_o sacrifice_n which_o i_o shall_v offer_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o own_v i_o for_o your_o saviour_n in_o die_v a_o painful_a and_o ignominious_a death_n for_o your_o sake_n and_o learn_v charity_n and_o patience_n and_o humility_n and_o resignation_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n by_o my_o suffering_n you_o have_v not_o spiritual_a nor_o shall_v have_v eternal_a life_n v._o 53._o if_o it_o be_v ask_v why_o our_o saviour_n still_o persist_v in_o a_o figurative_a and_o allusive_a way_n of_o expression_n although_o he_o see_v their_o gross_a and_o perhaps_o wilful_a mistake_n of_o his_o former_a word_n v._n 52._o it_o may_v be_v answer_v that_o he_o know_v good_a reason_n for_o it_o though_o the_o reason_n be_v not_o leave_v upon_o record_n however_o a_o probable_a conjecture_n ought_v to_o suffice_v in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o where_o the_o objection_n be_v that_o no_o account_n can_v be_v give_v of_o it_o i_o answer_v therefore_o that_o our_o lord_n do_v not_o think_v fit_a to_o foretell_v the_o ignominious_a death_n he_o be_v to_o suffer_v upon_o the_o cross_n so_o public_o as_o he_o foretell_v his_o resurrection_n sometime_o he_o tell_v his_o disciple_n that_o he_o be_v to_o suffer_v and_o be_v kill_v matth._n 16._o but_o to_o other_o he_o intimate_v it_o obscure_o with_o intention_n that_o they_o may_v afterward_o
