more_o easy_a to_o they_o so_o as_o a_o man_n will_v willing_o and_o cheerful_o endure_v they_o &_o undergo_v they_o though_o never_o so_o many_o the_o devil_n take_v he_o to_o the_o holy_a city_n here_o be_v the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o devil_n preparation_n now_o by_o the_o holy_a city_n be_v mean_v jerusalem_n as_o luk._n 4._o 9_o it_o be_v plain_a but_o how_o do_v the_o devil_n carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n from_o the_o wilderness_n to_o jerusalem_n satan_n he_o may_v do_v this_o three_o way_n first_o in_o vision_n second_o by_o the_o ordinary_a way_n three_o carry_v he_o in_o the_o air_n first_o by_o vision_n as_o it_o be_v usual_a in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o prophet_n 4._o so_o jeremiah_n be_v carry_v in_o vision_n to_o the_o river_n euphrates_n but_o christ_n can_v not_o thus_o in_o vision_n be_v carry_v from_o the_o wilderness_n to_o jerusalem_n for_o than_o it_o shall_v have_v be_v no_o temptation_n unto_o he_o in_o vision_n only_o to_o cast_v himself_o from_o the_o top_n of_o the_o temple_n second_o our_o saviour_n christ_n may_v be_v lead_v by_o the_o ordinary_a way_n and_o so_o indeed_o the_o word_n will_v bear_v it_o but_o i_o take_v it_o it_o be_v not_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o this_o place_n for_o if_o the_o devil_n lead_v our_o saviour_n from_o the_o wilderness_n to_o jerusalem_n then_o either_o with_o or_o against_o his_o will_n either_o of_o his_o own_o accord_n or_o else_o at_o the_o persuasion_n of_o the_o devil_n but_o he_o go_v not_o of_o his_o own_o accord_n for_o see_v he_o be_v lead_v into_o the_o wilderness_n and_o come_v to_o be_v tempt_v there_o he_o now_o be_v in_o the_o conflict_n and_o it_o be_v not_o yet_o end_v he_o will_v not_o of_o his_o own_o accord_n depart_v thence_o to_o jerusalem_fw-la second_o he_o will_v not_o go_v at_o the_o persuasion_n of_o the_o devil_n for_o we_o never_o read_v that_o he_o will_v do_v any_o thing_n at_o the_o devil_n persuasion_n though_o in_o itself_o lawful_a three_o the_o devil_n may_v convey_v and_o carry_v the_o body_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n in_o the_o air_n from_o the_o wilderness_n to_o jerusalem_n and_o this_o be_v the_o opinion_n of_o the_o best_a divine_n that_o the_o devil_n have_v power_n by_o god_n permission_n to_o transport_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o air_n from_o the_o wilderness_n to_o the_o holy_a city_n and_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v confirm_v by_o the_o word_n follow_v where_o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o devil_n set_v he_o on_o a_o pinnacle_n of_o the_o temple_n now_o it_o be_v as_o likely_a that_o he_o carry_v christ_n from_o the_o wilderness_n thither_o as_o that_o the_o devil_n have_v power_n to_o place_n and_o set_v he_o on_o the_o top_n of_o the_o temple_n now_o than_o if_o the_o devil_n have_v permission_n to_o transport_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n from_o the_o wilderness_n to_o jerusalem_n 1._o this_o make_v for_o that_o opinion_n which_o be_v common_a
conjure_a bread_n and_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n and_o such_o stuff_n can_v drive_v away_o the_o devil_n from_o their_o house_n and_o from_o their_o person_n and_o yet_o we_o see_v here_o that_o neither_o the_o holiness_n of_o christ_n person_n nor_o yet_o of_o the_o place_n can_v hinder_v satan_n but_o he_o do_v tempt_v he_o again_o we_o see_v it_o be_v to_o small_a purpose_n to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v be_v free_v from_o temptation_n to_o change_v the_o place_n or_o to_o change_v the_o air_n for_o what_o place_n be_v there_o so_o holy_a or_o so_o sound_a and_o wholesome_a where_o satan_n can_v and_o will_v not_o set_v his_o temptation_n on_o foot_n and_o assault_v we_o indeed_o to_o remove_v the_o disease_n of_o the_o body_n these_o may_v be_v of_o some_o force_n to_o change_v the_o air_n etc._n etc._n but_o to_o cure_v the_o conscience_n and_o to_o help_v the_o disease_n of_o the_o soul_n this_o and_o such_o like_a can_v do_v nothing_o at_o all_o and_o set_v he_o on_o a_o pinnacle_n of_o the_o temple_n here_o be_v the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o devil_n preparation_n who_o have_v carry_v christ_n from_o the_o wilderness_n to_o jerusalem_fw-la now_o he_o place_v he_o upon_o a_o pinnacle_n of_o the_o temple_n or_o a_o little_a wing_n of_o the_o temple_n some_o think_v that_o it_o be_v a_o sharp_a broach_v gild_v to_o some_o especial_a use_n but_o it_o be_v either_o the_o battlement_n which_o be_v make_v by_o god_n commandment_n lest_o any_o shall_v fall_v because_o their_o house_n have_v flat_a roof_n oâ—_n else_o some_o corner_n of_o the_o temple_n howsoever_o it_o be_v a_o dangerous_a place_n if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n cast_v thyself_o down_o etc._n etc._n in_o this_o verse_n be_v set_v down_o the_o second_o temptation_n and_o in_o a_o syllogism_n it_o may_v be_v thus_o conclude_v if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n then_o cast_v thyself_o down_o but_o thou_o say_v and_o be_v persuade_v that_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n therefore_o thou_o may_v cast_v thyself_o down_o here_o we_o must_v mark_v the_o scope_n of_o the_o devil_n in_o this_o second_o temptation_n which_o be_v this_o to_o tempt_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o presumption_n to_o persuade_v he_o to_o presume_v of_o god_n mercy_n and_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o a_o vain_a confidence_n in_o his_o father_n protection_n without_o use_v lawful_a mean_n and_o in_o this_o second_o temptation_n we_o may_v observe_v one_o especial_a thing_n doctr._n which_o the_o devil_n aim_v at_o in_o his_o temptation_n namely_o to_o persuade_v he_o to_o a_o vain_a presumption_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o sure_o we_o see_v the_o devil_n prevail_v much_o in_o these_o day_n by_o this_o argument_n for_o we_o see_v how_o some_o man_n cry_v god_n be_v merciful_a god_n be_v merciful_a and_o so_o presume_v &_o grow_v secure_a in_o sin_n and_o take_v occasion_n of_o god_n mercy_n to_o sooth_n themselves_o in_o their_o sin_n other_o they_o say_v i_o be_o either_o elect_v or_o reject_v and_o if_o i_o be_v elect_v i_o be_o sure_a i_o shall_v be_v save_v howsoever_o i_o live_v if_o i_o be_v reject_v i_o be_o sure_a i_o shall_v perish_v though_o i_o live_v never_o so_o well_o and_o thus_o man_n live_v as_o they_o list_v other_o say_v i_o know_v the_o lord_n will_v provide_v for_o i_o and_o therefore_o refuse_v to_o live_v in_o any_o call_n and_o as_o for_o those_o which_o make_v profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o devil_n he_o labour_v to_o persuade_v they_o that_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o profess_v religion_n though_o they_o practise_v not_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n as_o the_o five_o foolish_a virgin_n who_o hold_v out_o their_o blaze_a lamp_n yet_o want_v the_o vessel_n of_o oil_n to_o maintain_v their_o lamp_n this_o be_v so_o use_v it_o shall_v admonish_v we_o all_o to_o take_v especial_a heed_n that_o we_o be_v not_o over_o comâ—_n of_o satan_n in_o this_o kind_n see_v the_o devil_n know_v our_o nature_n and_o see_v that_o to_o presume_v and_o think_v well_o of_o ourselves_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n very_o fit_v and_o please_v our_o nature_n whereas_o despair_n it_o be_v a_o troublesome_a thing_n and_o bring_v man_n often_o to_o a_o great_a sight_n of_o their_o misery_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o devil_n prevail_v with_o a_o thousand_o to_o one_o more_o by_o presumption_n then_o by_o despair_n despair_n kill_v thousand_o security_n ten_o thousand_o and_o it_o be_v to_o be_v note_v that_o when_o the_o devil_n have_v in_o the_o former_a temptation_n labour_v to_o bring_v christ_n to_o despair_v of_o his_o father_n providence_n now_o he_o labour_v the_o clean_a contrary_n to_o bring_v he_o to_o presume_v of_o god_n providence_n and_o here_o we_o may_v see_v the_o devil_n exceed_v cunning_a that_o he_o fight_v to_o carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n from_o one_o extreme_a to_o another_o and_o thus_o do_v the_o devil_n deal_v with_o all_o man_n he_o seek_v to_o draw_v man_n either_o to_o presumption_n or_o else_o to_o despair_v and_o labour_n to_o carry_v they_o from_o one_o extreme_a to_o another_o as_o from_o covetousness_n to_o prodigality_n and_o so_o of_o the_o rest_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o avoid_v both_o the_o extreme_n use_v neither_o to_o presume_v too_o much_o nor_o yet_o to_o be_v cast_v down_o by_o despair_n but_o to_o keep_v the_o golden_a mediocrity_n even_o as_o christ_n do_v in_o this_o place_n cast_v thyself_o down_o he_o will_v have_v christ_n not_o to_o show_v by_o his_o doctrine_n but_o to_o work_v a_o miracle_n that_o he_o may_v know_v he_o to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n this_o show_v the_o nature_n of_o all_o wicked_a man_n they_o care_v not_o for_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n but_o they_o cry_v out_o for_o miracle_n as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o herod_n he_o desire_v to_o see_v our_o saviour_n christ_n work_v some_o miracle_n but_o he_o contemn_v his_o word_n and_o doctrine_n and_o the_o jew_n who_o persecute_a christ_n and_o his_o gospel_n yet_o when_o he_o be_v upon_o the_o cross_n they_o will_v have_v he_o work_v a_o miracle_n to_o come_v down_o when_o he_o be_v nail_v hand_n and_o foot_n and_o all_o wicked_a man_n be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n more_o to_o regard_v and_o desire_v a_o miracle_n then_o to_o hear_v the_o bless_a doctrine_n of_o jesus_n christ._n cast_v thyself_o down_o the_o devil_n have_v prove_v before_o the_o faith_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v most_o constant_a that_o he_o will_v not_o so_o much_o as_o doubt_v of_o his_o father_n providence_n in_o his_o great_a need_n now_o he_o take_v occasion_n from_o the_o grace_n and_o gift_n of_o christ_n to_o bring_v he_o to_o presume_v and_o to_o have_v a_o vain_a confidence_n of_o his_o father_n protection_n and_o so_o will_v the_o devil_n deal_v with_o all_o the_o member_n of_o christ_n if_o he_o can_v prevail_v by_o our_o weakness_n to_o bring_v we_o to_o despair_v than_o he_o will_v take_v occasion_n by_o the_o grace_n and_o gift_n he_o see_v in_o we_o to_o make_v we_o presume_v as_o often_o he_o prevail_v by_o this_o mean_n to_o make_v man_n swell_v and_o think_v high_o of_o themselves_o for_o some_o grace_n they_o have_v receive_v of_o learning_n wit_n eloquence_n etc._n etc._n to_o puff_n man_n up_o with_o satanical_a pride_n and_o overween_a oâ—_n themselves_o then_o cast_v thyself_o down_o the_o lord_n give_v the_o devil_n permission_n to_o place_n christ_n in_o a_o dangerous_a place_n but_o yet_o the_o devil_n coulâ—_n not_o go_v any_o further_a to_o hurt_v christ_n there_o 〈◊〉_d cast_v he_o down_o he_o have_v no_o power_n but_o persuade_v he_o to_o cast_v himself_o down_o where_o we_o see_v the_o devil_n power_n be_v limit_v his_o power_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o his_o malice_n be_v to_o mankind_n but_o the_o lord_n do_v limit_v satan_n power_n and_o in_o all_o thing_n have_v care_n of_o his_o own_o child_n that_o satan_n can_v do_v they_o no_o harm_n for_o the_o devil_n though_o he_o have_v set_v christ_n upon_o the_o top_n of_o the_o temple_n can_v not_o for_o his_o life_n cast_v he_o down_o where_o we_o may_v see_v the_o devil_n for_o all_o his_o malice_n can_v go_v no_o further_o than_o god_n give_v he_o leave_v and_o this_o must_v comfort_v we_o for_o as_o god_n the_o father_n limit_n satan_n in_o respect_n of_o christ_n our_o head_n so_o do_v he_o in_o we_o his_o member_n get_v the_o victory_n nay_o all_o the_o comfort_n of_o god_n child_n stand_v in_o this_o victory_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n because_o now_o christ_n stand_v in_o our_o stead_n and_o be_v tempt_v for_o our_o sake_n so_o that_o he_o be_v our_o head_n and_o get_v victory_n over_o the_o devil_n the_o church_n &_o every_o member_n of_o the_o church_n in_o jesus_n christ_n get_v victory_n over_o satan_n in_o the_o victory_n we_o be_v to_o observe_v two_o thing_n first_o that_o the_o devil_n depart_v from_o he_o second_o the_o angel_n minister_v unto_o he_o 1._o in_o this_o depart_n of_o the_o devil_n from_o christ_n we_o may_v behold_v the_o unspeakable_a goodness_n of_o god_n to_o his_o church_n for_o that_o which_o befall_v christ_n befall_v the_o church_n of_o god_n now_o the_o devil_n have_v tempt_v christ_n in_o three_o several_a and_o sore_a temptation_n he_o encounter_v he_o in_o all_o three_o and_o resist_v the_o devil_n in_o all_o his_o temptation_n and_o then_o the_o devil_n leave_v he_o and_o go_v his_o way_n wherein_o we_o see_v the_o endless_a love_n of_o god_n in_o that_o he_o put_v a_o end_n to_o the_o affliction_n of_o his_o lord_n in_o mercy_n put_v a_o end_n to_o all_o the_o affliction_n of_o his_o child_n and_o this_o we_o may_v see_v by_o daily_a experience_n some_o of_o god_n child_n be_v visit_v with_o grievous_a and_o fearful_a temptation_n some_o half_n a_o year_n some_o a_o whole_a year_n some_o two_o three_o four_o ten_o year_n yet_o at_o length_n the_o lord_n give_v they_o a_o good_a issue_n and_o put_v a_o end_n to_o their_o misery_n and_o in_o stead_n of_o horror_n of_o conscience_n send_v they_o comfort_n &_o in_o stead_n of_o grief_n joy_v unspeakable_a and_o though_o the_o lord_n shall_v suffer_v they_o to_o be_v tempt_v all_o their_o life_n long_o till_o their_o die_a day_n yet_o then_o the_o lord_n will_v give_v they_o a_o bless_a issue_n of_o all_o their_o misery_n and_o fill_v their_o soul_n with_o exceed_a comfort_n here_o we_o see_v a_o notable_a difference_n between_o the_o first_o adam_n and_o the_o second_o adam_n 2._o the_o first_o adam_n be_v tempt_v and_o yield_v to_o satan_n temptation_n and_o suffer_v the_o devil_n to_o enter_v into_o his_o hart_n the_o second_o adam_n jesus_n christ_n he_o be_v likewise_o tempt_v yet_o he_o yield_v not_o to_o the_o least_o assault_n of_o the_o devil_n neither_o can_v he_o ever_o enter_v into_o his_o holy_a heart_n but_o depart_v from_o he_o and_o be_v fain_o to_o leave_v he_o in_o this_o departure_n of_o the_o devil_n end_v and_o christ_n have_v in_o great_a indignation_n bid_v he_o avoid_v satan_n for_o his_o blasphemous_a speech_n than_o the_o devil_n depart_v here_o we_o see_v the_o best_a way_n to_o put_v the_o devil_n to_o flight_n 1._o and_o to_o give_v he_o the_o repulse_n namely_o to_o resist_v he_o at_o the_o first_o &_o give_v he_o no_o ground_n but_o as_o s._n james_n say_v resist_v the_o devil_n 5._o and_o he_o will_v fly_v from_o thou_o when_o as_o we_o depend_v on_o god_n word_n and_o the_o bless_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n pray_v for_o grace_n from_o god_n to_o resist_v satan_n he_o shall_v never_o prevail_v against_o we_o but_o will_v depart_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v but_o foolishness_n to_o think_v or_o imagine_v that_o he_o can_v be_v put_v to_o flight_n by_o music_n merry_a company_n sport_n and_o pastime_n or_o such_o like_a vanity_n but_o the_o only_a mean_n to_o cause_v he_o to_o depart_v be_v the_o word_n and_o prayer_n by_o they_o alone_o he_o be_v resist_v they_o take_v a_o bad_a course_n who_o think_v they_o may_v yield_v to_o satan_n temptation_n when_o they_o be_v young_a and_o purpose_n in_o their_o old_a age_n to_o resist_v he_o but_o if_o we_o ever_o yield_v unto_o he_o we_o do_v set_v open_v the_o door_n of_o our_o heart_n unto_o the_o devil_n we_o do_v willing_o receive_v he_o and_o bid_v he_o welcome_a and_o then_o he_o will_v not_o easy_o be_v drive_v away_o nay_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o a_o hard_a matter_n if_o not_o impossible_a to_o put_v he_o to_o flight_n in_o our_o old_a age_n but_o as_o man_n in_o a_o dropsy_n the_o more_o they_o he_o avoid_v satan_n present_o he_o depart_v and_o be_v obedient_a to_o his_o commandment_n what_o be_v this_o any_o virtue_n in_o the_o devil_n to_o obey_v christ_n commandment_n no_o sure_o it_o be_v no_o virtue_n in_o the_o devil_n for_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v there_o be_v two_o kind_n of_o obedience_n one_o be_v voluntary_a and_o cheerful_a the_o other_o by_o constraint_n and_o force_v voluntary_a obedience_n be_v that_o when_o any_o of_o the_o creature_n of_o god_n do_v willing_o through_o god_n grace_n move_v they_o obey_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n as_o all_o the_o good_a angel_n of_o god_n and_o adam_n before_o his_o fall_n and_o all_o the_o child_n of_o god_n that_o be_v effectual_o call_v justify_v and_o sanctify_a do_v willing_o and_o with_o chearfulnesse_n yield_v obedience_n unto_o god_n in_o part_n beside_o this_o there_o be_v a_o constrain_a obedience_n when_o one_o be_v urge_v and_o compel_v whether_o he_o will_v or_o not_o to_o obey_v another_o as_o one_o
