christ_n and_o the_o reason_n why_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o there_o be_v three_o thing_n in_o it_o that_o every_o man_n that_o take_v christ_n be_v subject_a to_o 1_o he_o that_o be_v lay_v down_o positive_o in_o the_o text_n the_o church_n be_v subject_a to_o christ._n that_o every_o man_n that_o take_v he_o aught_o to_o be_v so_o 2_o that_o it_o be_v best_o for_o they_o so_o to_o be_v and_o to_o that_o end_n the_o apostle_n give_v two_o reason_n for_o he_o be_v their_o 3_o head_n and_o saviour_n i_o will_v bind_v up_o all_o into_o one_o point_n that_o every_o one_o that_o do_v or_o will_v take_v christ_n he_o be_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o he_o and_o it_o be_v best_o for_o he_o so_o he_o to_o be_v he_o that_o take_v christ_n be_v subject_a to_o he_o for_o so_o soon_o as_o there_o be_v a_o union_n make_v between_o the_o soul_n and_o christ_n so_o soon_o there_o be_v a_o power_n go_v out_o from_o he_o which_o bow_n and_o fashion_n the_o heart_n and_o make_v it_o willing_a to_o keep_v his_o law_n it_o cause_v such_o a_o motion_n in_o the_o heart_n as_o be_v in_o the_o member_n from_o the_o head_n so_o soon_o as_o the_o will_n be_v willing_a to_o do_v a_o thing_n there_o be_v a_o readiness_n also_o in_o the_o member_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o there_o be_v the_o same_o spirit_n that_o be_v in_o the_o head_n transfuse_v into_o the_o member_n and_o so_o here_o the_o same_o spirit_n be_v communicate_v from_o christ_n by_o virtue_n of_o this_o union_n to_o the_o member_n and_o as_o soon_o as_o that_o union_n shall_v be_v perfect_a and_o the_o spirit_n shall_v dwell_v in_o all_o fullness_n in_o we_o than_o we_o shall_v have_v a_o full_a readiness_n to_o obey_v he_o now_o because_o it_o be_v but_o in_o part_n therefore_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o degree_n of_o it_o there_o be_v much_o want_v in_o this_o readiness_n to_o obedience_n yet_o so_o as_o there_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n some_o such_o inclination_n though_o the_o member_n be_v weak_a and_o paralytical_a and_o contrary_a humour_n be_v in_o they_o which_o much_o hinder_v their_o readiness_n yet_o so_o as_o there_o be_v a_o inclination_n in_o the_o mind_n a_o intrinsical_a aptness_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o christ_n in_o all_o thing_n 2_o that_o he_o that_o take_v christ_n ought_v to_o be_v subject_a now_o thou_o be_v match_v with_o he_o thou_o be_v engage_v thou_o have_v covenant_v with_o he_o cor._n 7._o 23._o 23._o he_o be_v thy_o lord_n and_o have_v buy_v thou_o and_o thou_o have_v sell_v thyself_o to_o he_o yet_o he_o have_v buy_v thou_o of_o thyself_o so_o as_o thou_o be_v not_o tui_fw-la juris_fw-la it_o be_v a_o usual_a thing_n for_o man_n to_o bethink_v with_o themselves_o how_o shall_v i_o bestow_v this_o day_n and_o man_n forger_n that_o they_o be_v servant_n for_o they_o be_v not_o to_o spend_v it_o in_o what_o be_v pleasant_a and_o profitable_a for_o themselves_o for_o god_n have_v buy_v they_o of_o themselves_o and_o as_o a_o servant_n be_v to_o ask_v his_o master_n every_o morning_n what_o work_n he_o will_v have_v he_o to_o do_v that_o day_n so_o be_v you_o not_o a_o jot_n of_o strength_n be_v thou_o own_o the_o last_o be_v that_o be_v be_v best_a for_o man_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o he_o and_o if_o man_n be_v persuade_v that_o it_o be_v best_o for_o they_o now_o at_o this_o time_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o he_o they_o will_v come_v in_o but_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o think_v it_o general_o best_o and_o best_a for_o i_o at_o this_o time_n in_o my_o particular_a case_n now_o this_o be_v it_o i_o will_v show_v you_o and_o take_v the_o reason_n in_o the_o text._n because_o he_o be_v a_o head_n and_o that_o in_o four_o respect_n in_o regard_n of_o sovereignty_n reas._n in_o regard_n of_o preeminency_n and_o excellency_n because_o he_o give_v life_n to_o the_o church_n as_o the_o head_n do_v to_o the_o body_n head_n because_o he_o be_v a_o guide_n to_o the_o church_n as_o the_o sovereign_a head_n be_v to_o the_o member_n because_o he_o be_v their_o sovereign_a lord_n and_o prince_n for_o this_o subjection_n be_v in_o nature_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o he_o that_o be_v our_o lord_n and_o who_o we_o find_v set_v over_o we_o and_o we_o think_v it_o no_o disparagement_n to_o be_v so_o to_o subject_v ourselves_o to_o a_o equal_a indeed_o we_o may_v and_o do_v think_v much_o at_o it_o therefore_o now_o think_v that_o he_o be_v a_o prince_n and_o thou_o be_v a_o base_a creature_n and_o do_v thou_o think_v much_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o he_o all_o disobedience_n come_v from_o this_o that_o we_o think_v ourselves_o too_o good_a to_o obey_v he_o as_o he_o say_v so_o man_n say_v secret_o in_o their_o heart_n who_o be_v the_o lord_n that_o i_o shall_v obey_v and_o this_o they_o do_v in_o every_o sin_n and_o whereas_o it_o may_v be_v say_v there_o be_v many_o great_a man_n set_v over_o man_n which_o they_o will_v say_v they_o see_v no_o great_a reason_n why_o they_o obey_v they_o i_o be_o of_o more_o excellent_a part_n than_o he_o this_o may_v be_v object_v against_o many_o king_n and_o indeed_o unless_o they_o do_v excel_v obedience_n do_v not_o come_v off_o willing_o nor_o natural_o therefore_o in_o the_o second_o place_n consider_v he_o be_v a_o 19_o head_n for_o preeminence_n col._n 1._o 18._o 19_o he_o be_v the_o head_n of_o the_o body_n the_o church_n that_o in_o all_o thing_n he_o may_v have_v the_o preeminence_n for_o it_o please_v the_o father_n that_o in_o he_o all_o fullness_n shall_v dwell_v that_o as_o in_o the_o head_n there_o be_v all_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o body_n in_o all_o fullness_n the_o sense_n and_o the_o understanding_n etc._n etc._n so_o in_o he_o now_o if_o a_o man_n have_v all_o excellency_n in_o all_o fullness_n above_o all_o other_o man_n all_o the_o world_n will_v obey_v that_o man_n see_v it_o in_o beast_n a_o eagle_n be_v the_o excellent_a of_o fowl_n nature_n have_v make_v it_o the_o king_n of_o all_o and_o be_v there_o such_o a_o man_n among_o man_n there_o will_v be_v no_o resistance_n in_o nature_n to_o such_o a_o obedience_n to_o he_o now_o christ_n be_v such_o a_o one_o full_a of_o wisdom_n full_a of_o love_n and_o meekness_n etc._n etc._n such_o a_o one_o as_o thy_o heart_n can_v wish_v in_o the_o three_o place_n all_o this_o be_v for_o thy_o profit_n if_o profit_n thou_o be_v 1._o ult_n speak_v of_o christ_n and_o the_o body_n he_o call_v the_o body_n the_o fullness_n of_o ult_n he_o who_o fill_v all_o in_o all_o the_o body_n be_v the_o fullness_n of_o he_o for_o as_o the_o head_n make_v not_o a_o complete_a man_n
because_o god_n have_v put_v he_o into_o the_o high_a place_n but_o because_o he_o have_v a_o fitness_n in_o he_o all_o fullness_n choose_v he_o then_o take_v he_o before_o any_o thing_n else_o for_o he_o be_v the_o best_a and_o will_v preponderate_v whatsoever_o come_v in_o competition_n with_o he_o there_o be_v no_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o the_o creature_n which_o be_v out_o of_o he_o but_o all_o in_o he_o and_o therefore_o thou_o must_v choose_v he_o altogether_o and_o make_v he_o the_o adequate_a object_n of_o thy_o soul_n in_o who_o thou_o be_v full_o satisfy_v bring_v thy_o heart_n to_o this_o frame_n to_o be_v content_a to_o be_v strip_v of_o every_o thing_n think_v it_o enough_o to_o have_v the_o lord_n 2_o col._n 10._o and_o you_o be_v complete_a in_o he_o who_o be_v the_o 10_o head_n of_o all_o principality_n and_o power_n his_o scope_n be_v this_o in_o the_o 6._o verse_n before_o he_o have_v exhort_v they_o that_o as_o they_o have_v take_v christ_n it_o be_v the_o same_o word_n that_o be_v in_o john_n 1._o 12._o so_o they_o will_v walk_v in_o he_o 12._o be_v full_o content_v with_o he_o and_o let_v no_o man_n deceive_v you_o in_o philosophy_n that_o be_v whereas_o man_n teach_v you_o excellent_a rule_n of_o moral_a philosophy_n yet_o reckon_v not_o these_o as_o excellency_n add_v to_o christ_n but_o abound_v you_o in_o faith_n in_o he_o for_o we_o be_v complete_a in_o he_o if_o any_o thing_n be_v want_v in_o he_o than_o indeed_o we_o may_v seek_v out_o to_o other_o thing_n learn_v to_o apply_v this_o to_o your_o particular_a occasion_n say_v i_o care_v for_o no_o man_n friendship_n nor_o wealth_n it_o be_v enough_o i_o have_v the_o lord_n alone_o i_o be_o complete_a in_o he_o look_v for_o all_o from_o he_o and_o than_o you_o will_v do_v all_o for_o he_o he_o that_o look_v for_o any_o thing_n from_o the_o creature_n will_v do_v so_o much_o for_o it_o every_o benefit_n have_v a_o office_n join_v and_o so_o much_o man_n serve_v sin_n as_o they_o look_v for_o pleasure_n from_o it_o and_o so_o much_o service_n as_o be_v do_v to_o the_o creature_n so_o much_o be_v take_v off_o from_o god_n and_o therefore_o say_v i_o will_v not_o apply_v myself_o to_o you_o but_o to_o christ._n and_o so_o if_o a_o man_n be_v to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n he_o that_o think_v himself_o complete_a in_o christ_n will_v not_o care_v for_o man_n day_n so_o if_o a_o man_n come_v to_o some_o action_n of_o trial_n wherein_o he_o shall_v loose_v some_o special_a friend_n and_o get_v great_a enemy_n if_o he_o think_v himself_o complete_a in_o christ_n he_o care_v not_o so_o in_o walk_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o a_o man_n calling_n if_o a_o man_n think_v himself_o complete_a in_o christ_n he_o will_v think_v it_o enough_o to_o do_v his_o duty_n so_o as_o man_n may_v receive_v profit_n by_o it_o and_o as_o for_o wealth_n he_o leave_v that_o to_o the_o lord_n in_o who_o he_o be_v complete_a but_o you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v i_o live_v in_o this_o world_n quest_n then_o i_o have_v credit_n to_o look_v to_o and_o wife_n and_o child_n ans._n god_n be_v able_a to_o do_v abundant_o for_o you_o if_o he_o you_o have_v he_o when_o moses_n be_v content_a to_o let_v pharaoh_n go_v and_o his_o great_a place_n in_o egypt_n go_v and_o so_o suffer_v affliction_n with_o the_o people_n of_o god_n god_n make_v he_o a_o great_a prince_n than_o ever_o he_o be_v so_o christ_n because_o he_o endure_v the_o shame_n and_o the_o speak_n against_o and_o the_o mean_a condition_n that_o ever_o man_n have_v therefore_o 2_o phil._n god_n give_v he_o a_o great_a name_n above_o all_o name_n abraham_n let_v his_o 2._o country_n go_v but_o god_n give_v he_o a_o great_a country_n and_o in_o his_o seed_n make_v he_o heir_n of_o the_o world_n so_o if_o a_o man_n be_v a_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n let_v he_o not_o think_v with_o himself_o how_o to_o provide_v best_a for_o himself_o but_o how_o he_o may_v do_v most_o good_a and_o therefore_o not_o to_o take_v care_n for_o preferment_n or_o maintenance_n in_o the_o 10._o of_o matth._n 10._o luke_n when_o christ_n 10._o send_v his_o disciple_n out_o to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n he_o bid_v they_o take_v no_o money_n nor_o no_o scrip_n to_o maintain_v they_o nor_o no_o staff_n to_o defend_v they_o from_o injury_n nor_o salute_v any_o man_n by_o the_o way_n that_o be_v do_v not_o stand_v join_v together_o etc._n etc._n the_o scope_n of_o the_o apostle_n be_v to_o show_v we_o we_o shall_v grow_v and_o how_o to_o grow_v add_v this_o motive_n to_o it_o to_o stir_v they_o to_o it_o that_o christ_n be_v their_o head_n able_a to_o fill_v every_o empty_a crevice_n and_o that_o shall_v stir_v they_o up_o to_o bring_v their_o heart_n to_o he_o that_o so_o you_o may_v grow_v up_o into_o he_o that_o be_v when_o you_o hear_v he_o be_v a_o head_n that_o fill_v you_o stand_v not_o at_o a_o stay_n but_o grow_v up_o to_o he_o there_o be_v as_o great_a a_o necessity_n for_o you_o to_o grow_v as_o for_o other_o to_o come_v in_o and_o therefore_o say_v he_o continue_v not_o child_n if_o they_o ask_v how_o they_o shall_v grow_v up_o into_o he_o he_o bid_v they_o follow_v the_o truth_n in_o into_o he_o be_v to_o grow_v more_o emotied_a of_o ourselves_o and_o self-conceit_n and_o full_a of_o he_o so_o as_o he_o may_v be_v great_a in_o we_o for_o we_o define_v grace_n otherwise_o then_o the_o moral_a philosopher_n define_v virtue_n they_o define_v it_o to_o be_v that_o which_o frame_v the_o soul_n to_o right_a reason_n that_o be_v to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v best_a virtue_n for_o himself_o and_o his_o converse_n with_o man_n but_o we_o grow_v in_o another_o manner_n to_o be_v that_o which_o frame_v and_o exercise_v every_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o growth_n in_o grace_n unless_o it_o be_v into_o christ_n do_v all_o for_o he_o unless_o we_o be_v take_v off_o of_o our_o own_o bottom_n
and_o set_v upon_o he_o now_o there_o be_v thing_n further_o mention_v in_o that_o place_n as_o mean_n of_o this_o growth_n to_o receive_v all_o from_o he_o from_o who_o as_o the_o christ._n word_n be_v etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o to_o keep_v the_o heart_n nigh_o to_o he_o that_o therefore_o which_o hinder_v growth_n be_v that_o which_o cause_v distance_n betwixt_o god_n and_o we_o now_o the_o cement_n quality_n that_o do_v join_v we_o to_o he_o be_v faith_n and_o love_n and_o that_o which_o loosen_v we_o from_o he_o be_v self_n dependence_n and_o self_n seek_v and_o all_o thing_n else_o which_o thrust_v in_o betwixt_o god_n and_o you_o as_o vain_a hope_n and_o vain_a fear_n keep_v in_o the_o fellowship_n of_o the_o saint_n for_o they_o receive_v from_o christ_n only_o as_o they_o be_v knit_v and_o saint_n compact_v together_o if_o the_o branch_n be_v divide_v from_o the_o tree_n and_o the_o root_n there_o be_v no_o growth_n let_v they_o look_v to_o it_o that_o take_v no_o heed_n of_o their_o company_n there_o be_v many_o mutual_a duty_n to_o be_v perform_v together_o by_o which_o the_o saint_n grow_v be_v one_o of_o their_o fellowship_n in_o conference_n prayer_n etc._n etc._n if_o thou_o will_v grow_v by_o that_o which_o every_o joint_n furnish_v to_o we_o there_o convey_v be_v certain_a commissurae_fw-la band_n and_o sinew_n by_o which_o grace_n be_v convey_v by_o which_o be_v mean_v all_o those_o vehicula_fw-la of_o grace_n all_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n he_o therefore_o that_o pray_v most_o hear_v most_o conscionable_o and_o be_v in_o company_n of_o those_o most_o which_o excel_v in_o grace_n whence_o something_o will_v drop_v that_o may_v increase_v grace_n and_o truth_n such_o man_n grow_v most_o though_o christ_n be_v the_o fountain_n yet_o grace_n be_v convey_v by_o these_o as_o the_o mean_n therefore_o use_v these_o mean_n look_v up_o to_o he_o to_o open_v the_o fountain_n there_o be_v a_o effectual_a power_n a_o nutritive_a faculty_n in_o every_o one_o that_o have_v life_n in_o he_o which_o be_v a_o member_n mean_n of_o growth_n according_a to_o the_o effectual_a work_n in_o the_o measure_n of_o every_o part_n by_o which_o a_o man_n make_v use_v of_o every_o thing_n suggest_v to_o he_o still_o receive_v profit_n from_o the_o word_n read_v or_o preach_v or_o from_o god_n providence_n some_o nutriment_n from_o they_o all_o as_o you_o say_v of_o good_a wit_n that_o they_o make_v use_v of_o every_o thing_n so_o of_o good_a heart_n and_o that_o be_v according_a to_o the_o measure_n in_o every_o part_n yet_o so_o as_o the_o least_o bud_n have_v this_o effectual_a power_n in_o its_o measure_n to_o draw_v from_o the_o root_n as_o well_o as_o the_o great_a branch_n some_o have_v a_o great_a measure_n because_o they_o take_v in_o not_o for_o themselves_o but_o digest_v and_o deliver_v it_o to_o other_o for_o in_o the_o body_n there_o be_v some_o member_n that_o receive_v for_o themselves_o and_o for_o distribution_n as_o the_o liver_n heart_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o think_v with_o thyself_o i_o have_v a_o great_a degree_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n therefore_o
