dress_n for_o truth_n to_o walk_v abroad_o in_o i_o remember_v it_o be_v say_v of_o a_o young_a painter_n who_o be_v to_o draw_v the_o picture_n of_o a_o fair_a woman_n pulchram_fw-la non_fw-la potuit_fw-la pinxit_fw-la divitem_fw-la he_o can_v not_o paint_v her_o fair_a but_o paint_v her_o rich_a so_o that_o her_o picture_n be_v rather_o gaudy_a than_o comely_a and_o beautiful_a and_o therefore_o though_o i_o desire_v you_o will_v pardon_v the_o plainness_n of_o this_o treatise_n and_o my_o preach_n among_o you_o yet_o now_o i_o do_v recall_v that_o request_n account_v it_o will_v be_v tell_v of_o we_o our_o duty_n which_o if_o not_o perform_v our_o guilt_n it_o be_v index_n judex_fw-la vindex_fw-la it_o show_v we_o what_o we_o shall_v do_v which_o if_o we_o do_v not_o read_v in_o this_o treatise_n i_o have_v one_o thing_n more_o to_o request_v of_o you_o which_o be_v your_o continual_a fervent_a prayer_n for_o a_o blessing_n upon_o i_o and_o my_o labour_n among_o you_o and_o it_o be_v not_o easy_a to_o determine_v whether_o those_o your_o prayer_n will_v bring_v great_a advantage_n to_o yourselves_o or_o i_o for_o if_o by_o your_o supplication_n god_n shall_v enlarge_v his_o gift_n and_o grace_n in_o i_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o lay_v they_o out_o to_o your_o edification_n which_o also_o i_o desire_v you_o will_v beg_v of_o the_o lord_n for_o i_o who_o be_o your_o servant_n for_o jesus_n sake_n tho._n white_a wherein_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n consist_v chap._n i._o in_o inward_a admiring_n and_o adore_n of_o god_n 1._o to_o admire_v and_o adore_v god_n in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n for_o in_o such_o inward_a admiring_n and_o adore_n consist_v the_o very_a spirit_n life_n and_o power_n of_o holiness_n if_o the_o knowledge_n we_o have_v of_o god_n do_v not_o raise_v our_o soul_n so_o high_a as_o to_o admire_v he_o and_o humble_v they_o so_o low_o as_o to_o adore_v he_o it_o be_v but_o carnal_a and_o utter_o unworthy_a of_o god_n this_o be_v that_o frame_n of_o spirit_n which_o the_o angel_n have_v matth._n 18.10_o it_o be_v not_o a_o glance_n of_o the_o eye_n but_o behold_v that_o be_v look_v upon_o with_o admiration_n and_o this_o be_v continual_a they_o never_o have_v their_o eye_n off_o they_o always_o behold_v though_o their_o employment_n be_v as_o to_o the_o object_n various_a for_o they_o be_v minister_a spirit_n sometime_o employ_v about_o the_o preserve_n or_o deliver_v the_o people_n of_o god_n from_o temporal_a danger_n now_o let_v we_o serious_o consider_v whether_o we_o have_v not_o as_o great_a cause_n to_o admire_v adore_v love_n and_o praise_n god_n as_o they_o it_o be_v true_a they_o be_v in_o possession_n of_o that_o happiness_n which_o we_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o in_o possession_n but_o be_v as_o sure_a of_o as_o if_o we_o have_v we_o have_v the_o word_n the_o covenant_n the_o oath_n of_o god_n for_o it_o in_o which_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o he_o to_o fail_v if_o we_o have_v not_o strong_a consolation_n it_o be_v not_o his_o fault_n but_o we_o that_o we_o do_v not_o believe_v he_o nor_o shall_v our_o not_o have_v possession_n be_v think_v any_o sufficient_a cause_n of_o the_o least_o abatement_n of_o our_o love_n or_o thanks_o to_o that_o purpose_n this_o simile_n have_v much_o satisfy_v i_o viz._n suppose_v there_o be_v twenty_o poor_a man_n to_o who_o some_o very_a rich_a man_n have_v promise_v and_o upon_o his_o promise_n be_v actual_o bestow_v one_o hundred_v pound_n apiece_o the_o ten_o or_o last_o of_o those_o poor_a man_n
profit_v if_o we_o love_v the_o impediment_n more_o than_o the_o thing_n they_o keep_v we_o from_o as_o if_o we_o love_v a_o multitude_n of_o worldly_a employment_n more_o than_o grace_n how_o just_o may_v god_n give_v we_o up_o to_o our_o own_o heart_n desire_n and_o it_o be_v better_o for_o we_o be_v give_v up_o to_o satan_n by_o way_n of_o excommunication_n for_o that_o be_v but_o for_o the_o destruction_n of_o the_o flesh_n that_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v save_v in_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o whosoever_o be_v give_v up_o to_o his_o own_o heart_n desire_n be_v give_v up_o to_o they_o both_o for_o the_o destruction_n both_o of_o body_n and_o soul_n the_o three_o part_n wherein_o be_v set_v down_o several_a mean_n and_o help_v for_o attain_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n chap._n i._n the_o first_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a for_o a_o godly_a life_n be_v faith_n the_o first_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a to_o a_o holy_a life_n be_v faith_n for_o without_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n it_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o thing_n hope_v for_o and_o the_o foundation_n of_o our_o love_n i_o have_v many_o time_n serious_o think_v what_o be_v the_o true_a reason_n why_o so_o few_o believe_v the_o scripture_n assure_v myself_o that_o if_o they_o do_v firm_o believe_v it_o be_v impossible_a that_o their_o life_n shall_v be_v so_o contrary_a to_o it_o for_o although_o as_o i_o have_v say_v conviction_n do_v not_o necessary_o work_v conversion_n yet_o it_o will_v work_v reformation_n or_o at_o least_o it_o will_v not_o suffer_v they_o to_o go_v on_o with_o so_o little_a fear_n and_o dread_n upon_o their_o spirit_n as_o they_o do_v now_o though_o divers_a pretend_v that_o it_o be_v because_o divers_a speculative_a truth_n that_o be_v set_v down_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v so_o contrary_a to_o or_o at_o least_o above_o their_o reason_n that_o they_o can_v assent_v to_o they_o yet_o i_o be_o very_o confident_a that_o it_o be_v the_o practical_a truth_n of_o the_o scripture_n that_o they_o stop_v at_o which_o they_o be_v loath_a to_o obey_v they_o be_v fain_o to_o pretend_v or_o by_o the_o just_a judgement_n of_o god_n they_o be_v disenabled_n to_o believe_v those_o truth_n that_o be_v more_o speculative_a that_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n seem_v to_o i_o evident_a because_o that_o they_o can_v but_o confess_v if_o not_o all_o most_o of_o the_o practical_o of_o the_o scripture_n not_o to_o be_v against_o nor_o above_o reason_n but_o such_o as_o whosoever_o shall_v obey_v and_o live_v according_a to_o they_o that_o their_o very_a enemy_n can_v but_o approve_v of_o their_o life_n and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o make_v the_o christian_n both_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o charity_n and_o love_v one_o among_o another_o and_o to_o their_o enemy_n to_o be_v admire_v and_o commend_v even_o by_o their_o persecutor_n among_o who_o they_o live_v the_o very_a heathen_a can_v see_v a_o beauty_n in_o holiness_n therefore_o since_o the_o glorious_a light_n and_o lustre_n of_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o command_n of_o god_n in_o scripture_n be_v so_o clear_a that_o man_n can_v but_o be_v convince_v and_o yet_o will_v not_o obey_v no_o marvel_n that_o those_o save_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o can_v be_v see_v by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n i_o say_v it_o be_v no_o marvel_n that_o god_n do_v not_o give_v they_o of_o that_o light_n which_o be_v supernatural_a since_o they_o resist_v and_o make_v no_o better_o use_v of_o their_o natural_a light_n live_v quite_o contrary_a to_o those_o thing_n that_o teach_v they_o and_o it_o be_v observe_v that_o one_o reason_n why_o god_n have_v not_o make_v all_o his_o truth_n so_o clear_a and_o demonstrative_a as_o mathematical_a natural_a truth_n be_v be_v that_o he_o will_v order_v matter_n so_o that_o those_o that_o be_v of_o corrupt_a mind_n may_v find_v some_o pretence_n for_o not_o believe_v of_o they_o for_o to_o such_o people_n god_n may_v just_o send_v strong_a delusion_n and_o it_o may_v be_v it_o be_v much_o better_o even_o for_o the_o people_n of_o god_n that_o all_o wicked_a man_n be_v not_o full_o convince_v of_o divine_a truth_n for_o that_o will_v make_v they_o much_o more_o outrageous_a and_o malicious_a for_o those_o who_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n convince_v but_o not_o convert_v they_o do_v enrage_v as_o they_o do_v satan_n who_o believe_v and_o as_o it_o do_v those_o who_o commit_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o hate_v the_o truth_n they_o know_v be_v the_o great_a and_o most_o malicious_a persecutor_n nay_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v a_o mercy_n in_o some_o kind_n even_o to_o the_o wicked_a also_o for_o it_o be_v better_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o know_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n since_o if_o they_o do_v know_v they_o they_o will_v not_o obey_v they_o therefore_o if_o thou_o will_v believe_v obey_v that_o be_v if_o thou_o will_v believe_v the_o mysterious_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n obey_v the_o holy_a command_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v what_o thou_o know_v and_o thou_o shall_v know_v what_o as_o yet_o thou_o be_v ignorant_a of_o i_o have_v also_o consider_v with_o myself_o what_o truth_n be_v the_o most_o difficult_a to_o believe_v and_o to_o i_o it_o seem_v that_o to_o believe_v that_o god_n have_v give_v his_o only_a belove_a son_n to_o die_v for_o sinner_n be_v that_o truth_n which_o we_o hardly_a yield_v to_o for_o first_o our_o pride_n be_v utter_o against_o it_o for_o by_o nature_n we_o love_v to_o go_v to_o heaven_n by_o our_o own_o merit_n and_o to_o be_v justify_v whole_o from_o another_o and_o for_o our_o own_o work_n not_o so_o much_o as_o to_o be_v one_o ingredient_n in_o our_o justification_n and_o our_o own_o free_a will_n to_o have_v no_o hand_n in_o our_o regeneration_n and_o our_o own_o good_a work_n in_o our_o glorification_n by_o way_n of_o merit_n the_o pride_n of_o man_n will_v not_o stoop_v to_o and_o then_o second_o it_o be_v utter_o against_o humane_a reason_n partly_o because_o we_o think_v with_o ourselves_o that_o god_n may_v have_v forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n without_o so_o much_o ado_n as_o to_o have_v his_o own_o son_n suffer_v so_o much_o for_o we_o but_o we_o little_o consider_v that_o we_o many_o time_n do_v many_o thing_n ourselves_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o trouble_n out_o of_o love_n which_o may_v be_v do_v as_o well_o without_o we_o so_o the_o mother_n nurse_v she_o own_o child_n and_o dress_v it_o and_o do_v many_o other_o thing_n which_o she_o may_v have_v do_v by_o other_o as_o effectual_o though_o she_o be_v only_o a_o spectator_n and_o further_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o there_o be_v two_o special_a reason_n why_o god_n give_v his_o son_n and_o christ_n give_v himself_o to_o die_v for_o we_o chief_o to_o satisfy_v his_o justice_n as_o also_o to_o satisfy_v we_o of_o his_o love_n and_o it_o be_v not_o easy_a to_o say_v which_o be_v hard_a to_o be_v satisfy_v for_o it_o be_v true_a that_o he_o that_o injure_v forgive_v not_o we_o therefore_o have_v so_o much_o offend_v god_n can_v hardly_o forgive_v he_o that_o be_v believe_v that_o he_o will_v forgive_v we_o he_o therefore_o to_o satisfy_v and_o cure_v our_o infidelity_n give_v we_o his_o only_a son_n to_o die_v for_o we_o to_o give_v we_o a_o infallible_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n do_v satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n by_o way_n of_o merit_n and_o our_o infidelity_n by_o way_n of_o motive_n the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n do_v reconcile_v god_n to_o we_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n do_v reconcile_v we_o to_o god_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o that_o satisfy_v god_n justice_n shall_v be_v god_n and_o it_o be_v as_o necessary_a that_o he_o that_o satisfy_v we_o of_o god_n love_n shall_v be_v god_n also_o another_o thing_n that_o hinder_v our_o belief_n of_o this_o mystery_n be_v because_o the_o goodness_n and_o love_n of_o god_n be_v so_o exceed_v great_a that_o we_o can_v believe_v it_o for_o we_o be_v subject_a to_o judge_v of_o god_n by_o ourselves_o and_o therefore_o because_o we_o shall_v never_o suffer_v our_o only_a belove_a child_n to_o die_v a_o miserable_a shameful_a death_n to_o save_v a_o enemy_n therefore_o we_o judge_v that_o god_n can_v do_v so_o neither_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o more_o patient_a meek_a long-suffering_a we_o grow_v by_o the_o grace_n and_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o more_o easy_o do_v we_o believe_v his_o love_n to_o we_o but_o if_o we_o true_o consider_v that_o which_o make_v this_o mystery_n of_o love_n incredible_a shall_v make_v we_o believe_v it_o viz._n the_o greatness_n of_o it_o for_o since_o god_n have_v say_v in_o his_o word_n that_o herein_o
walk_v in_o the_o street_n this_o way_n thou_o may_v be_v journey_v towards_o heaven_n but_o i_o shall_v rather_o endeavour_v to_o show_v it_o in_o holy_a duty_n it_o be_v a_o excellent_a practice_n to_o use_v these_o ejaculatory_a prayer_n while_o we_o be_v hear_v the_o word_n i_o mean_v mental_a ejaculatorie_a prayer_n for_o vocal_a may_v disturb_v other_o and_o especial_o savour_v too_o much_o of_o hypocrisy_n yet_o i_o will_v not_o judge_v those_o that_o use_v it_o for_o i_o do_v not_o find_v our_o saviour_n do_v blame_v they_o that_o use_v vocal_a ejaculatorie_a prayer_n while_o he_o be_v preach_v joh._n 6.34_o and_o though_o the_o apostle_n will_v not_o interrupt_v our_o saviour_n with_o any_o question_n whilst_o he_o be_v preach_v but_o stay_v while_n be_v come_v into_o the_o house_n private_o mark_v 7.17_o yet_o while_o he_o be_v preach_v they_o send_v a_o ejaculatory_a prayer_n luke_n 17.5_o and_o be_v blameless_a when_o thou_o hear_v any_o grace_n commend_v how_o can_v thou_o abstain_v as_o suppose_v faith_n lord_n increase_v my_o faith_n so_o if_o any_o sin_n reprove_v and_o thou_o find_v thyself_o guilty_a of_o it_o thou_o may_v and_o shall_v in_o the_o secret_a of_o thy_o soul_n say_v lord_n lay_v not_o this_o sin_n to_o my_o charge_n if_o a_o sermon_n preach_v of_o the_o excellency_n of_o christ_n that_o bread_n that_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n why_o may_v thou_o not_o say_v as_o they_o do_v john_n 6.34_o lord_n evermore_o give_v we_o of_o this_o bread_n nay_o we_o read_v that_o our_o bless_a saviour_n while_o he_o be_v preach_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o that_o their_o heart_n be_v cold_a in_o the_o service_n either_o not_o actuallie_o or_o not_o so_o ferventlie_o desire_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o edification_n of_o his_o people_n then_o by_o a_o ejaculatory_a filent_a prayer_n to_o fetch_v strength_n from_o heaven_n be_v of_o great_a advantage_n nay_o even_o in_o solemn_a prayer_n these_o ejaculatory_a prayer_n be_v to_o be_v mix_v for_o when_o one_o find_v one_o heart_n dead_a and_o cold_a then_o to_o call_v down_o fire_n from_o heaven_n to_o inflame_v we_o be_v of_o great_a and_o frequent_a use_n and_o indeed_o the_o benefit_n of_o ejaculatory_a prayer_n be_v not_o to_o be_v know_v but_o by_o experience_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v commend_v it_o as_o one_o of_o the_o great_a help_n that_o i_o know_v object_n but_o if_o you_o shall_v object_n and_o say_v i_o have_v abundance_n of_o worldly_a employment_n and_o i_o must_v follow_v my_o particular_a call_n as_o for_o family_n prayer_n morning_n and_o evening_n and_o for_o closet_n prayer_n sometime_o i_o think_v they_o fit_a and_o be_o content_a to_o do_v they_o but_o to_o tell_v i_o that_o i_o must_v be_v frequent_a in_o these_o ejaculatory_a prayer_n in_o my_o shop_n as_o i_o be_o sell_v or_o buy_v etc._n etc._n be_v a_o thing_n i_o can_v do_v for_o i_o must_v mind_v my_o business_n i_o be_o about_o i_o answer_v 1._o speak_v out_o and_o mince_v not_o the_o matter_n but_o let_v thy_o heart_n speak_v out_o for_o god_n very_o well_o see_v the_o thought_n of_o it_o and_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o speak_v what_o thy_o heart_n think_v my_o shop_n and_o my_o particular_a call_n and_o to_o get_v riches_n be_v my_o great_a business_n for_o matter_n of_o religion_n and_o in_o particular_a for_o prayer_n in_o the_o morning_n before_o my_o customer_n come_v or_o at_o night_n when_o they_o be_v go_v i_o be_o content_a to_o use_v they_o since_o it_o be_v a_o general_a custom_n so_o to_o do_v but_o for_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o day_n i_o desire_v to_o be_v free_a and_o that_o god_n will_v not_o trouble_v i_o with_o the_o motion_n of_o his_o spirit_n the_o rest_n of_o the_o day_n for_o though_o he_o desire_v but_o a_o word_n or_o two_o by_o way_n of_o answer_n in_o ejaculatory_a prayer_n yet_o that_o be_v a_o disturbance_n though_o when_o by_o his_o spirit_n he_o speak_v to_o my_o heart_n seek_v thou_o my_o face_n for_o i_o to_o answer_v thy_o face_n lord_n will_v i_o seek_v be_v enough_o and_o he_o will_v accept_v of_o it_o yet_o this_o be_v a_o interruption_n let_v i_o tell_v thou_o thou_o that_o can_v not_o tell_v how_o to_o keep_v communion_n with_o god_n in_o worldly_a employment_n and_o do_v not_o prize_v communion_n with_o he_o above_o all_o worldly_a employment_n be_v not_o worthy_a of_o he_o thou_o may_v be_v a_o professor_n but_o thou_o be_v no_o saint_n 2._o i_o must_v ask_v thou_o whether_o thou_o be_v as_o much_o against_o this_o that_o worldly_a thought_n shall_v mingle_v themselves_o with_o thy_o solemn_a prayer_n as_o that_o holy_a thought_n shall_v be_v mingle_v with_o thy_o worldly_a business_n and_o this_o show_v the_o rottenness_n of_o thy_o heart_n that_o thou_o will_v admit_v the_o world_n to_o come_v and_o speak_v with_o thou_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o thy_o solemn_a duty_n or_o converse_v with_o god_n but_o will_v not_o afford_v god_n a_o word_n or_o a_o look_n while_o thou_o be_v converse_v with_o the_o world_n 3._o these_o ejaculatorie_a prayer_n will_v not_o hinder_v but_o sanctify_v thy_o employment_n the_o have_v thy_o thought_n frequent_o upon_o god_n and_o heaven_n will_v keep_v thou_o from_o all_o unlawful_a gain_n from_o grind_v the_o face_n of_o the_o poor_a in_o buy_v and_o make_v advantage_n of_o the_o ignorance_n of_o the_o buyer_n in_o sell_v and_o this_o indeed_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o thou_o love_v not_o to_o have_v thought_n of_o god_n at_o such_o time_n for_o they_o awaken_v thy_o conscience_n so_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o sin_v so_o secure_o and_o without_o disturbance_n 4._o thy_n not_o have_v frequent_a thought_n of_o god_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o thy_o worldly_a employment_n show_n that_o thou_o do_v not_o follow_v thy_o particular_a call_n out_o of_o obedience_n to_o god_n but_o out_o of_o love_n to_o riches_n so_o that_o thou_o have_v give_v the_o world_n thy_o heart_n it_o be_v a_o better_a frame_n of_o heart_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o obey_v god_n when_o he_o bid_v we_o buy_v and_o sell_v etc._n etc._n but_o to_o rejoice_v to_o obey_v he_o when_o he_o bid_v we_o pray_v when_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n immediate_a service_n serve_v as_o recreation_n to_o sweeten_v and_o lighten_v the_o burden_n of_o thy_o particular_a call_n and_o not_o the_o work_n of_o thy_o particular_a call_n as_o thing_n that_o sweeten_v duty_n of_o religion_n when_o thou_o call_v the_o sabbath_n a_o delight_n and_o say_v when_o will_v the_o sabbath_n come_v and_o not_o when_o will_v it_o be_v do_v this_o be_v that_o frame_n of_o heart_n from_o which_o ejaculatorie_a prayer_n proceed_v but_o you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v i_o gain_v this_o heavenly_a art_n to_o be_v frequent_a in_o ejaculatorie_a prayer_n i_o shall_v add_v
