zeal_n for_o the_o sanctuary_n of_o god_n shall_v not_o show_v great_a concern_n than_o he_o do_v for_o the_o honour_n of_o his_o sabbath_n but_o the_o case_n betwixt_o these_o be_v very_o different_a for_o the_o jew_n who_o at_o this_o time_n so_o profane_o neglect_v the_o temple_n be_v no_o less_o superstitious_o nice_a in_o keep_v the_o sabbath_n and_o though_o a_o whip_n be_v fit_a to_o scourge_v their_o profaneness_n a_o bridle_n be_v most_o proper_a to_o restrain_v their_o superstition_n wherefore_o we_o may_v observe_v he_o hold_v the_o reins_o in_o here_o upon_o every_o occasion_n he_o be_v far_o from_o encourage_v any_o in_o a_o loose_a regard_n towards_o this_o day_n for_o he_o consider_v it_o as_o a_o day_n dedicate_v to_o god_n service_n and_o we_o find_v he_o therefore_o preach_v continual_o upon_o it_o in_o the_o jewish_a synagogue_n 6.2_o mark_v 6.2_o to_o show_v that_o one_o principal_a duty_n of_o the_o day_n be_v to_o attend_v the_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n and_o all_o the_o liberty_n he_o plead_v direct_o for_o on_o this_o day_n be_v only_o for_o work_n of_o necessity_n and_o mercy_n it_o be_v in_o respect_n of_o these_o alone_o he_o tell_v we_o 28._o mark_v 2.27_o 28._o that_o the_o sabbath_n be_v make_v for_o man_n and_o that_o man_n be_v lord_n also_o of_o the_o sabbath_n nor_o do_v he_o give_v the_o least_o countenance_n for_o spend_v this_o day_n upon_o recreation_n or_o secular_a business_n as_o sure_o it_o be_v very_o hard_a since_o god_n have_v give_v we_o six_o day_n in_o the_o week_n for_o the_o benefit_n of_o our_o body_n if_o the_o seven_o shall_v not_o be_v allow_v by_o we_o to_o his_o glory_n and_o the_o good_a of_o our_o soul_n though_o neither_o be_v christ_n for_o tie_v man_n up_o upon_o this_o day_n to_o that_o strictness_n which_o be_v enjoin_v by_o moses_n as_o a_o clog_n and_o punishment_n to_o the_o jew_n he_o himself_o be_v a_o jew_n and_o as_o a_o jew_n therefore_o no_o question_n he_o observe_v this_o day_n in_o all_o respect_v answerable_a to_o the_o intent_n of_o moses_n though_o not_o to_o the_o pharisee_n superstitious_a gloss_n upon_o it_o but_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n which_o he_o be_v make_v under_o he_o desire_v not_o to_o bring_v upon_o any_o of_o we_o and_o lest_o his_o example_n therefore_o shall_v be_v bring_v into_o precedent_n there_o be_v no_o mention_n make_v of_o any_o legal_a observance_n in_o rest_v from_o culinary_a affair_n or_o the_o like_a which_o he_o tie_v himself_o or_o his_o disciple_n up_o to_o on_o this_o day_n rather_o the_o whole_a drift_n of_o his_o discourse_n about_o this_o day_n be_v more_o to_o take_v off_o from_o than_o advance_v any_o scrupulous_a rest_n upon_o it_o be_v a_o plain_a argument_n of_o his_o design_n to_o set_v up_o that_o more_o rational_a sabbath_n which_o the_o primitive_a christian_n afterward_o observe_v upon_o the_o lord_n day_n when_o the_o sabbath_n be_v reckon_v not_o so_o much_o a_o day_n of_o rest_n as_o a_o day_n of_o good_a work_n and_o instead_o of_o sit_v still_o upon_o it_o as_o the_o pharisee_n do_v with_o freeze_a heart_n and_o sullen_a deject_a look_n christian_n think_v nothing_o so_o proper_a next_o to_o god_n worship_n as_o to_o express_v their_o joy_n upon_o it_o in_o make_v comfortable_a provision_n for_o themselves_o and_o for_o the_o poor_a we_o know_v what_o hard_a word_n the_o father_n give_v such_o person_n who_o choose_v to_o fast_o upon_o this_o day_n 7._o fast_v i_o think_v may_v well_o be_v bring_v under_o the_o head_n of_o ceremonial_a duty_n and_o this_o be_v certain_o a_o excellent_a ordinance_n in_o itself_o there_o be_v no_o mean_n more_o proper_a for_o resist_v the_o devil_n assault_n by_o make_v we_o meek_a and_o poor_a in_o spirit_n fit_a for_o the_o influence_n of_o god_n spirit_n to_o work_v upon_o and_o our_o saviour_n therefore_o be_v so_o far_o from_o discountenance_v this_o that_o he_o say_v there_o be_v some_o devil_n be_v not_o to_o be_v cast_v out_o without_o it_o 17.21_o mat._n 17.21_o and_o he_o not_o only_o prepare_v himself_o therefore_o by_o it_o 17._o mat._n 4.2_o mark_v 6.16_o 17._o in_o order_n to_o that_o grand_a conflict_n he_o have_v with_o the_o devil_n but_o he_o recommend_v the_o use_n of_o it_o to_o his_o disciple_n at_o the_o same_o time_n that_o he_o caution_n they_o against_o the_o pharisee_n way_n of_o fast_v indeed_o he_o be_v against_o the_o pharisee_n fast_n not_o only_o as_o they_o have_v a_o hypocritical_a air_n of_o pride_n and_o vainglory_n in_o they_o but_o as_o they_o be_v reckon_v by_o they_o a_o meritorious_a act._n for_o never_o be_v high_a asserter_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o merit_n by_o good_a work_n than_o among_o these_o pharisee_n whence_o it_o be_v that_o to_o enhanse_v the_o value_n of_o this_o duty_n before_o god_n their_o fast_n be_v both_o carry_v on_o with_o great_a strictness_n and_o be_v much_o more_o frequent_a than_o other_o people_n neither_o of_o which_o be_v much_o commend_v by_o christ_n as_o to_o the_o frequency_n of_o their_o fast_n our_o saviour_n use_v his_o disciple_n so_o little_a to_o this_o 2.18_o mark_v 2.18_o as_o to_o make_v the_o pharisee_n think_v they_o fast_v not_o at_o all_o it_o may_v seem_v he_o be_v not_o for_o make_v this_o duty_n too_o common_a but_o for_o use_v it_o only_o as_o occasion_v require_v when_o such_o duty_n be_v practise_v of_o course_n they_o be_v apt_a to_o lose_v their_o virtue_n soon_o like_a physic_n to_o which_o man_n body_n be_v accustom_v it_o be_v the_o apply_v they_o upon_o great_a and_o special_a occasion_n chief_o that_o make_v they_o have_v due_a operation_n upon_o man_n mind_n and_o though_o our_o saviour_n therefore_o tell_v we_o that_o his_o disciple_n shall_v practice_v this_o duty_n often_o when_o he_o be_v go_v 2.20_o mark_v 2.20_o this_o imply_v not_o that_o it_o shall_v always_o be_v so_o but_o only_o whilst_o the_o day_n of_o mourn_v as_o it_o be_v for_o the_o bridegroom_n departure_n do_v in_o a_o extraordinary_a manner_n require_v it_o and_o much_o less_o do_v our_o saviour_n commend_v the_o pharisee_n rigid_a observance_n of_o this_o duty_n pale_a look_n and_o droop_a head_n be_v thing_n perhaps_o that_o man_n may_v admire_v people_n for_o but_o god_n delight_v not_o in_o even_o in_o this_o most_o mortify_a act_n of_o religion_n 6.17_o mat._n 6.17_o christ_n be_v for_o anoint_v the_o head_n and_o wash_v the_o face_n for_o behave_v ourselves_o with_o modest_a expression_n of_o cheerfulness_n before_o the_o world_n 8._o this_o principle_n of_o merit_n which_o the_o pharisee_n so_o espouse_v put_v they_o not_o only_o upon_o fast_v at_o this_o rate_n but_o upon_o whip_v themselves_o also_o and_o use_v the_o like_a act_n of_o austerity_n as_o good_a author_n report_n which_o be_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o romanist_n at_o this_o day_n and_o this_o be_v a_o mighty_a work_n of_o supererogation_n among_o they_o but_o our_o saviour_n give_v not_o the_o least_o encouragement_n to_o this_o either_o by_o his_o precept_n or_o example_n as_o whip_v be_v reckon_v a_o part_n of_o penance_n by_o the_o romish_a church_n we_o be_v not_o so_o unreasonable_a to_o expect_v to_o find_v our_o saviour_n exercise_v his_o body_n after_o this_o manner_n for_o sin_n he_o never_o commit_v though_o as_o it_o be_v reckon_v a-work_o of_o superabundant_a merit_n as_o well_o as_o of_o satisfaction_n by_o the_o pharisee_n it_o may_v seem_v as_o proper_a for_o he_o as_o any_o body_n else_o but_o then_o certain_o it_o be_v very_o strange_a among_o so_o many_o penitent_n as_o come_v to_o he_o for_o cure_v of_o their_o sin_n that_o he_o shall_v never_o prescribe_v this_o method_n of_o let_v themselves_o blood_n do_v he_o believe_v it_o of_o any_o avail_n to_o that_o end_n it_o be_v true_a 18.13_o luke_n 18.13_o he_o give_v a_o fair_a character_n of_o the_o publican_n smite_v upon_o his_o breast_n when_o he_o make_v confession_n of_o his_o sin_n to_o god_n but_o what_o then_o that_o be_v a_o act_n significant_a of_o true_a contrition_n and_o be_v no_o less_o natural_a for_o person_n in_o great_a trouble_n of_o mind_n than_o whip_v be_v foolish_a and_o unnatural_a nor_o be_v john_n the_o baptist_n course_n of_o life_n which_o the_o papist_n insist_v so_o much_o upon_o any_o just_a ground_n for_o this_o or_o the_o like_a austerity_n for_o beside_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o there_o of_o this_o whip_n practice_n john_n the_o baptist_n have_v a_o extraordinary_a call_n from_o god_n to_o do_v what_o he_o do_v he_o be_v to_o come_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o elias_n as_o a_o forerunner_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o be_v to_o imitate_v that_o prophet_n in_o a_o rough_a hardy_a way_n of_o life_n and_o this_o we_o may_v suppose_v to_o represent_v to_o we_o as_o in_o a_o emblem_n
lust_n so_o as_o to_o make_v we_o most_o easy_a to_o ourselves_o and_o most_o like_a to_o god_n without_o debar_v we_o the_o innocent_a comfort_n of_o this_o life_n such_o last_o as_o engage_v we_o to_o be_v good_a nature_a and_o to_o throw_v off_o those_o selfish_n and_o unnatural_a disposition_n which_o be_v the_o ruin_n of_o society_n and_o a_o reproach_n to_o mankind_n than_o which_o as_o i_o think_v there_o can_v no_o idea_n of_o religion_n be_v frame_v more_o excellent_a so_o let_v we_o study_v to_o conform_v our_o life_n to_o these_o and_o i_o question_v not_o but_o we_o become_v true_a follower_n of_o christ_n jesus_n a_o appendix_n concern_v the_o hypocrisy_n of_o the_o pharisee_n a_o appendix_n concern_v the_o hypocrisy_n of_o the_o pharisee_n though_o hypocrisy_n be_v often_o object_v by_o our_o saviour_n against_o the_o pharisee_n yet_o i_o can_v never_o be_v of_o the_o opinion_n that_o they_o be_v gross_a downright_a hypocrite_n such_o i_o mean_v as_o take_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n upon_o they_o only_o for_o secular_a interest_n to_o serve_v design_n of_o knavery_n and_o injustice_n and_o who_o know_v themselves_o to_o be_v hypocrite_n all_o the_o while_n i_o have_v so_o much_o charity_n for_o human_a nature_n as_o to_o hope_v there_o be_v few_o such_o creature_n as_o these_o in_o the_o world_n these_o be_v but_o one_o remove_n from_o atheist_n for_o to_o have_v have_v much_o more_o of_o the_o enthusiast_n in_o he_o than_o the_o hypocrite_n nor_o ought_v it_o to_o be_v think_v strange_a that_o such_o horrid_a doctrine_n and_o practice_n as_o many_o of_o these_o have_v be_v the_o author_n of_o shall_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o a_o good_a intention_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o so_o absurd_a which_o a_o craze_a head_n or_o vitiate_a understanding_n will_v not_o believe_v to_o be_v right_a sometime_o with_o what_o strange_a assurance_n will_v some_o madman_n fancy_v themselves_o king_n and_o emperor_n and_o not_o be_v beat_v out_o of_o their_o conceit_n by_o all_o that_o man_n can_v say_v but_o turn_v even_o their_o rag_n and_o their_o chain_n and_o every_o thing_n else_o that_o can_v be_v object_v to_o they_o into_o ensign_n of_o majesty_n it_o be_v the_o same_o unhappy_a influence_n that_o rule_v in_o the_o head_n of_o most_o enthusiast_n and_o though_o the_o head_n of_o some_o of_o they_o may_v not_o be_v turn_v at_o this_o rate_n yet_o there_o be_v many_o way_n of_o debauch_v conscience_n and_o stifle_v natural_a light_n in_o such_o and_o when_o strong_a affection_n and_o lust_n meet_v with_o weak_a or_o prejudice_v judgement_n it_o be_v no_o hard_a matter_n for_o such_o to_o persuade_v themselves_o by_o degree_n into_o the_o belief_n of_o whatever_o almost_o they_o please_v it_o be_v certain_o a_o most_o perverse_a piece_n of_o stupidity_n in_o the_o jew_n after_o all_o the_o miracle_n and_o good_a work_n that_o our_o saviour_n wrought_v among_o they_o to_o believe_v he_o worthy_a to_o be_v crucify_a at_o last_n 23.34_o luke_n 23.34_o and_o yet_o our_o saviour_n himself_o impute_v this_o gross_a of_o crime_n to_o weakness_n and_o not_o to_o malice_n and_o st._n peter_n in_o some_o measure_n excuse_n not_o only_o the_o people_n but_o their_o ruler_n also_o 3.17_o act._n 3.17_o upon_o this_o account_n of_o such_o strange_a force_n be_v the_o prejudices_fw-la of_o education_n that_o the_o pharisee_n do_v real_o act_v in_o the_o main_a upon_o principle_n of_o religion_n and_o conscience_n we_o have_v good_a ground_n to_o think_v when_o we_o consider_v that_o character_n
