of_o the_o sin_n of_o your_o youth_n oh_o know_v that_o your_o case_n be_v exceed_o dangerous_a therefore_o bewail_v your_o life_n whereby_o you_o have_v so_o much_o dishonour_v your_o maker_n humble_a and_o judge_v yourselves_o in_o the_o bitterness_n of_o your_o soul_n cry_v continual_o and_o importunate_o in_o the_o ear_n of_o the_o lord_n that_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a the_o sin_n of_o your_o youth_n and_o the_o long_o continue_a wickedness_n of_o your_o life_n may_v be_v forgive_v you_o that_o the_o often_o resistance_n which_o you_o have_v make_v against_o the_o spirit_n of_o worldling_n a_o hoary_a head_a impenitent_a person_n but_o even_o a_o monster_n among_o man_n what_o do_v thou_o not_o yet_o remember_v thy_o creator_n not_o in_o old_a age_n not_o at_o fifty_o at_o sixty_o or_o seventy_o year_n oh_o wretched_a security_n awake_v awake_a unto_o righteousness_n unto_o repentance_n you_o old_a one_o that_o sleep_n in_o sin_n lest_o you_o sleep_v the_o sleep_n of_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v many_o a_o man_n life_n be_v but_o a_o play_n and_o many_o in_o their_o course_n do_v but_o act_v other_o man_n part_n not_o in_o sincerity_n express_v their_o own_o inward_a disposition_n and_o therefore_o that_o decorum_n which_o they_o suppose_v may_v grace_v they_o in_o the_o eye_n of_o man_n be_v the_o thing_n they_o most_o of_o all_o affect_v and_o aim_v
at_o but_o this_o be_v man_n misery_n that_o his_o eye_n be_v now_o not_o single_a nor_o can_v he_o right_o discern_v what_o become_v he_o so_o that_o many_o time_n he_o shun_v those_o thing_n as_o unseemly_a which_o will_v be_v his_o great_a ornament_n and_o go_v about_o to_o deck_v himself_o with_o such_o thing_n as_o do_v but_o lay_v open_a his_o nakedness_n and_o discover_v his_o shame_n the_o apostle_n say_v that_o long_a hair_n which_o be_v a_o woman_n ornament_n be_v a_o man_n shame_n if_o a_o man_n wear_v long_a hair_n it_o be_v folly_n and_o shame_n to_o he_o 1_o cor._n 11._o and_o yet_o many_o man_n account_v this_o a_o special_a ornament_n whereas_o indeed_o it_o do_v as_o ill_o become_v they_o as_o a_o distaff_n do_v almost_o as_o ill_o as_o a_o woman_n garment_n thus_o it_o be_v in_o many_o other_o thing_n disguise_a fashion_n etc._n etc._n but_o beside_o these_o there_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o conceit_n among_o man_n that_o a_o licentious_a liberty_n a_o unlimited_a looseness_n of_o conversation_n become_v the_o young_a sort_n in_o the_o day_n of_o their_o youth_n and_o that_o nothing_o be_v more_o unseemly_a for_o that_o age_n than_o a_o humble_a holy_a subjection_n and_o obedience_n to_o the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ._n but_o here_o you_o see_v the_o wise_a man_n who_o be_v a_o man_n that_o do_v much_o affect_v decorum_n whilst_o he_o continue_v in_o his_o integrity_n as_o appear_v by_o that_o which_o the_o queen_n of_o sheba_n observe_v even_o to_o a_o ecstasy_n i_o king_n 10._o 4_o 5._o and_o when_o the_o queen_n of_o sheba_n have_v see_v all_o solomon_n be_v wisdom_n and_o the_o house_n that_o he_o have_v build_v and_o the_o meat_n of_o his_o table_n and_o the_o sit_v of_o his_o servant_n and_o the_o attendance_n of_o his_o minister_n and_o their_o apparel_n and_o his_o cupbearer_n and_o his_o assent_n by_o which_o he_o go_v up_o to_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v no_o more_o spirit_n in_o she_o and_o so_o you_o may_v gather_v by_o many_o passage_n of_o his_o story_n how_o exact_a he_o be_v in_o observe_v decorum_n and_o show_v forth_o his_o royal_a magnificence_n according_a to_o his_o place_n he_o i_o say_v that_o best_o know_v what_o be_v comely_a and_o seemly_a for_o young_a man_n show_v here_o that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o good_a but_o seemly_o for_o they_o even_o in_o the_o day_n of_o youth_n to_o be_v serious_o mindful_a of_o their_o creator_n and_o so_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o show_v themselves_o as_o man_n that_o have_v he_o and_o his_o fear_n before_o their_o eye_n for_o to_o omit_v this_o that_o whatsoever_o be_v good_a be_v also_o comely_a be_v suitable_a to_o the_o holiness_n and_o purity_n of_o god_n who_o be_v most_o glorious_a and_o beautiful_a it_o be_v plain_a here_o by_o the_o opposition_n that_o be_v make_v between_o the_o day_n of_o youth_n and_o old_a age_n that_o he_o commend_v it_o to_o they_o in_o special_a as_o a_o thing_n exceed_v fit_a and_o seemly_a for_o the_o young_a sort_n remember_v thy_o creator_n in_o the_o day_n of_o thy_o youth_n whilst_o the_o evil_a day_n come_v not_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v it_o be_v a_o most_o absurd_a and_o unseemly_a thing_n not_o to_o be_v true_o mindful_a of_o he_o that_o make_v we_o in_o our_o best_a day_n but_o then_o to_o begin_v when_o the_o evil_a day_n come_v and_o if_o you_o mark_v it_o be_v plain_a by_o those_o passage_n that_o follow_v that_o he_o still_o fasten_v a_o notorious_a absurdity_n and_o unseemliness_n upon_o this_o carriage_n of_o man_n who_o defer_v till_o the_o last_o the_o year_n draw_v nigh_o when_o thou_o shall_v say_v i_o have_v no_o pleasure_n in_o they_o how_o absurd_a and_o unseemly_a then_o to_o give_v up_o thyself_o to_o god_n when_o thou_o be_v weary_a of_o thyself_o and_o not_o before_o while_o the_o sun_n or_o the_o moon_n or_o the_o star_n be_v not_o darken_v and_o the_o cloud_n return_v after_o the_o rain_n a_o most_o absurd_a thing_n to_o give_v all_o the_o clear_a sun-shiny_a day_n of_o youth_n to_o sin_n to_o lose_v all_o thy_o good_a day_n waste_v and_o wear_v they_o out_o in_o vanity_n and_o then_o in_o the_o dull_a cloudy_a rainy_a time_n of_o old_a age_n which_o be_v most_o unfit_a for_o employment_n to_o begin_v to_o serve_v the_o lord_n and_o so_o in_o the_o verse_n follow_v so_o that_o it_o be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d a_o absurd_a thing_n or_o a_o thing_n out_o of_o place_n a_o unseemly_a and_o uncomely_a thing_n for_o young_a man_n to_o live_v unmindful_a of_o their_o creator_n and_o of_o the_o end_n of_o their_o creation_n whilst_o they_o be_v young_a and_o to_o leave_v he_o nothing_o but_o the_o lame_a and_o blind_a sacrifice_n of_o their_o decrepit_a age_n which_o the_o psalmist_n show_v plain_o psal._n 119._o 9_o wherewithal_o shall_v a_o young_a man_n cleanse_v his_o way_n by_o take_v heed_n thereto_o according_a to_o thy_o word_n that_o which_o be_v clean_o you_o know_v be_v comely_a now_o the_o psalmist_n show_v that_o if_o they_o that_o be_v young_a will_v walk_v in_o clean_a wave_n they_o must_v take_v heed_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o follow_v the_o light_n of_o it_o you_o know_v that_o a_o fair_a clean_a way_n be_v more_o pleasant_a and_o comely_a by_o far_o than_o a_o foul_a deep_a miry_a way_n and_o it_o be_v more_o comely_a for_o a_o man_n to_o walk_v in_o such_o a_o way_n if_o he_o can_v than_o to_o be_v mire_v with_o dirt_n in_o a_o foul_a way_n so_o the_o psalmist_n show_v that_o then_o a_o young_a man_n walk_v in_o a_o clean_a way_n and_o so_o in_o a_o comely_a manner_n when_o he_o follow_v and_o obey_v the_o word_n of_o god_n iâ—_n a_o holy_a and_o gracious_a conversation_n on_o thâ—_n other_o side_n when_o he_o cast_v the_o word_n behind_o his_o back_n and_o walk_v in_o the_o lust_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n follow_v his_o own_o will_n and_o seek_v to_o please_v himself_o in_o all_o thing_n he_o walk_v in_o a_o foul_a dirty_a way_n and_o be_v bemire_v 〈◊〉_d it_o be_v with_o drunkenness_n or_o whore_n doâ—â—_n or_o idleness_n or_o profaneness_n etc._n etc._n and_o hâ—_n carriage_n have_v no_o more_o true_a comeliness_n in_o iâ—_n than_o his_o clothes_n have_v when_o he_o fall_v in_o the_o mire_n chap._n ii_o this_o we_o may_v see_v plain_o if_o we_o do_v bâ—_n consider_v the_o nature_n and_o temperâ—â—_n youth_n and_o then_o think_v what_o correspondency_n and_o suitableness_n there_o be_v between_o it_o 〈◊〉_d true_a grace_n and_o holiness_n he_o that_o will_v maâ—â—_n a_o comely_a garment_n for_o another_o must_v not_o only_o make_v one_o part_n of_o it_o proportionable_a to_o anâ—ther_n but_o must_v take_v measure_n of_o he_o that_o 〈◊〉_d to_o wear_v it_o that_o it_o may_v be_v comely_a and_o fit_a iâ—_n he_o a_o man_n garment_n though_o never_o 〈◊〉_d comely_a and_o proportionable_a in_o itself_o will_v nâ—ver_o be_v comely_a and_o fit_a for_o a_o child_n here_o then_o let_v we_o take_v measure_n of_o youth_n and_o see_v how_o well_o it_o will_v become_v he_o to_o put_v on_o the_o new_a man_n to_o put_v on_o the_o lord_n jesus_n 1._o have_v the_o young_a man_n a_o special_a quickness_n of_o wit_n and_o apprehension_n what_o can_v become_v he_o better_o than_o to_o search_v into_o the_o glorious_a mystery_n of_o christ_n holy_a gospel_n and_o not_o content_v himself_o with_o a_o few_o answer_v commit_v to_o memory_n which_o he_o be_v able_a to_o fit_v to_o some_o question_n of_o chatechism_n but_o serious_o and_o with_o most_o earnest_a endeavour_n to_o study_v the_o doctrine_n of_o godliness_n and_o careful_o to_o learn_v that_o wisdom_n which_o be_v from_o above_o there_o be_v no_o knowledge_n can_v so_o well_o become_v the_o best_a wit_n and_o understanding_n as_o the_o best_a and_o most_o excellent_a knowledge_n and_o that_o be_v the_o true_a save_a knowledge_n of_o god_n of_o christ_n crucify_a which_o st._n paul_n esteem_v incomparable_o better_a than_o all_o his_o other_o learning_n this_o will_v beautify_v the_o fresh_a and_o most_o sparkle_a wit_n it_o will_v make_v the_o very_a spirit_n of_o a_o man_n shine_v within_o he_o this_o be_v young_a timothy_n ornament_n 2_o tim._n 3._o 15._o from_o a_o child_n thou_o have_v know_v the_o holy_a scripture_n which_o be_v able_a to_o make_v thou_o wise_a unto_o salvation_n through_o faith_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n that_o wisdom_n must_v needs_o beautify_v a_o young_a man_n mind_n which_o make_v he_o wise_a unto_o salvation_n wise_a for_o heaven_n which_o put_v such_o a_o light_n into_o he_o as_o be_v suitable_a to_o heaven_n and_o everlasting_a light_n which_o be_v like_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o angel_n above_o of_o which_o knowledge_n st._n paul_n say_v 2_o cor._n 4._o
that_o be_v young_a and_o yet_o enjoy_v the_o good_a day_n of_o your_o life_n do_v not_o you_o make_v they_o evil_n remember_v your_o creator_n in_o the_o day_n of_o your_o youth_n take_v heed_n to_o your_o way_n according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o shall_v these_o day_n indeed_o be_v good_a day_n to_o you_o and_o you_o shall_v prepare_v yourselves_o either_o for_o a_o honourable_a old_a age_n or_o for_o a_o bless_a end_n and_o a_o happy_a death_n prevent_v the_o evil_n of_o old_a age_n and_o put_v you_o in_o possession_n of_o everlasting_a life_n which_o never_o seel_v the_o decay_n of_o age._n final_o let_v i_o in_o a_o word_n beseech_v those_o who_o have_v already_o outlive_v their_o best_a day_n to_o look_v back_o serious_o and_o speedy_o upon_o the_o time_n and_o course_n of_o their_o youth_n and_o see_v how_o those_o day_n have_v be_v spend_v observe_v what_o matter_n of_o joy_n and_o thanksgiving_n or_o what_o cause_v of_o grief_n and_o humiliation_n they_o may_v find_v and_o according_o to_o be_v affect_v if_o you_o have_v make_v they_o evil_a day_n how_o shall_v you_o mourn_v for_o this_o how_o shall_v you_o seek_v god_n now_o that_o it_o draw_v towards_o the_o eleven_o hour_n before_o the_o night_n come_v when_o no_o man_n can_v work_v which_o bury_v all_o secure_a loiterer_n and_o unprepared_a one_o in_o a_o everlasting_a night_n of_o utter_a darkness_n where_o be_v weep_v and_o gnash_n of_o tooth_n the_o night_n come_v the_o darkness_n be_v come_v yet_o before_o it_o come_v do_v you_o that_o great_a work_n that_o your_o soul_n may_v contentment_n when_o a_o man_n life_n be_v like_o gloomy_a day_n such_o as_o st._n paul_n meet_v with_o in_o his_o sea_n when_o neither_o sun_n nor_o star_n for_o many_o day_n appear_v to_o such_o day_n old_a age_n be_v here_o compare_v day_n of_o darkness_n wherein_o sun_n moon_n and_o star_n have_v their_o light_a hide_a and_o darken_v and_o the_o cloud_n return_v after_o the_o rain_n though_o the_o shower_n fall_v yet_o it_o do_v not_o clear_o up_o but_o the_o cloud_n grow_v up_o and_o gather_v together_o again_o so_o it_o be_v in_o old_a age_n the_o end_n of_o one_o trouble_n be_v but_o the_o begnning_a of_o another_o affliction_n like_a to_o that_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v these_o evil_n of_o old_a age_n be_v more_o particular_o express_v and_o number_v up_o the_o keeper_n of_o the_o house_n do_v tremble_v the_o arm_n which_o be_v to_o guard_v and_o defend_v the_o body_n shake_v with_o the_o palsy_n the_o strong_a man_n the_o leg_n which_o be_v the_o pillar_n to_o bear_v up_o this_o house_n of_o clay_n begin_v to_o fail_v with_o weakness_n and_o to_o double_a under_o their_o burden_n like_o post_n wear_v and_o weaken_v with_o age_n the_o grinder_n the_o tooth_n cease_v because_o they_o be_v few_o and_o the_o window_n shall_v be_v darken_v etc._n etc._n in_o a_o word_n we_o may_v sum_n up_o the_o evil_n of_o these_o age_a day_n in_o these_o two_o head_n evil_n of_o loss_n and_o evil_n of_o sense_n the_o loss_n of_o contentment_n in_o god_n good_a blessing_n the_o loss_n of_o ability_n for_o many_o good_a office_n on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o suffering_n of_o many_o inconvenience_n in_o body_n and_o mind_n which_o make_v a_o man_n a_o burden_n to_o himself_o be_v burden_a with_o such_o a_o heap_n of_o year_n chap._n vi_o use._n the_o use_n of_o this_o be_v to_o renew_v the_o former_a exhortation_n to_o the_o young_a sort_n that_o they_o may_v prevent_v these_o evil_a day_n and_o remove_v the_o evil_a of_o they_o by_o timely_a repentance_n and_o sincere_a obedience_n in_o their_o youth_n impenitency_n and_o ungodliness_n make_v the_o good_a day_n of_o youth_n to_o become_v evil_a day_n repentance_n and_o a_o holy_a conversation_n make_v the_o evil_a day_n of_o old_a age_n to_o be_v good_a godliness_n be_v profitable_a to_o all_o thing_n say_v the_o apostle_n and_o so_o it_o be_v profitable_a for_o all_o time_n for_o time_n of_o youth_n as_o well_o as_o time_n of_o old_a age_n for_o health_n for_o sickness_n for_o life_n for_o death_n it_o shall_v do_v thou_o good_a and_o not_o evil_a all_o thy_o day_n if_o old_a age_n bring_v so_o many_o inconvenience_n with_o it_o how_o careful_a shall_v thou_o be_v to_o remove_v the_o guilt_n of_o thy_o sin_n before_o the_o burden_n of_o old_a age_n come_v upon_o thou_o if_o these_o wound_n of_o thy_o conscience_n be_v true_o heal_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n aforehand_o sprinkle_v on_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o faith_n then_o shall_v thy_o spirit_n be_v which_o in_o their_o old_a age_n shall_v be_v more_o and_o more_o far_o and_o flourish_a and_o their_o last_o work_n as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o church_n of_o thyatira_n revel_v 2_o 19_o shall_v be_v more_o than_o the_o first_o their_o last_o day_n better_o than_o the_o first_o such_o a_o good_a old_a age_n they_o shall_v have_v as_o divers_a of_o the_o saint_n be_v say_v to_o have_v have_v labour_v then_o so_o to_o live_v now_o that_o the_o evil_n of_o your_o age_n may_v be_v mitigate_v and_o remove_v but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n how_o evil_a and_o wretched_a must_v those_o day_n of_o old_a age_n be_v which_o be_v accompany_v with_o the_o guilt_n of_o many_o sin_n when_o year_n increase_n and_o wickedness_n increase_v when_o a_o man_n will_v not_o be_v admonish_v but_o as_o he_o have_v be_v rebellious_a in_o his_o youth_n so_o he_o will_v be_v obstinate_a in_o his_o old_a age_n oh_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o if_o these_o evil_a day_n have_v overtake_v thou_o before_o have_v the_o heart_n so_o possess_v and_o take_v up_o with_o present_a prosperity_n and_o earthly_a contentment_n of_o any_o kind_n as_o not_o to_o have_v any_o serious_a and_o effectual_a regard_n of_o such_o change_n as_o may_v be_v bring_v upon_o we_o therefore_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v to_o do_v with_o young_a man_n in_o this_o place_n who_o do_v please_v themselves_o in_o themselves_o and_o in_o their_o present_a youthful_a way_n delight_n and_o contentment_n he_o set_v before_o their_o eye_n a_o lively_a image_n of_o old_a age_n with_o the_o many_o evil_n grievance_n
