yet_o so_o as_o whereas_o the_o substance_n be_v of_o god_n and_o the_o quality_n of_o satan_n therefore_o here_o may_v be_v a_o concurrence_n of_o contrary_a affection_n in_o one_o main_a object_n as_o that_o the_o person_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v god_n workmanship_n be_v to_o be_v belove_v though_o we_o hate_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o person_n the_o good_a of_o the_o same_o person_n may_v be_v love_v though_o we_o hate_v the_o contrary_a evil_a in_o he_o and_o therefore_o whereas_o rule_n the_o ground_n next_o unto_o faith_n as_o of_o our_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o duty_n unto_o man_n be_v love_n howsoever_o our_o affection_n be_v different_a in_o themselves_o yet_o they_o must_v all_o be_v derive_v from_o this_o principal_a affection_n of_o love_n we_o must_v hope_v grieve_v love_n as_o hatred_n be_v subordinate_a to_o love_v grief_n to_o joy_n fear_v to_o hope_n etc._n etc._n as_o be_v not_o contrary_n in_o diverse_a subject_n but_o all_o the_o same_o general_a as_o no_o otherwise_o respect_v diverse_a subordinate_a object_n but_o that_o they_o aim_v at_o one_o principal_a as_o further_a each_o other_o in_o their_o particular_a contrary_n and_o different_a object_n to_o that_o one_o principal_a namely_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n hereby_o shall_v we_o know_v rule_n the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o affection_n if_o they_o be_v proportionable_a to_o the_o object_n and_o measure_v thereof_o as_o if_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o time_n be_v grievous_a and_o extraordinary_a so_o our_o grief_n be_v suitable_a if_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o his_o deliverance_n be_v wonderful_a so_o our_o joy_n and_o thankfulness_n be_v answerable_a and_o this_o may_v serve_v for_o the_o just_a conviction_n of_o our_o time_n first_o in_o have_v great_a judgement_n then_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v so_o secure_a second_o in_o that_o we_o 2._o set_v not_o our_o affection_n high_a enough_o in_o good_a thing_n and_o yet_o rack_v they_o too_o far_o in_o evil_a thing_n we_o fear_v not_o god_n enough_o and_o yet_o fear_v the_o world_n too_o much_o we_o love_v the_o world_n too_o scant_o and_o love_v our_o profit_n too_o excessive_o and_o so_o there_o be_v a_o jar_n in_o both_o our_o fear_n in_o spiritual_a thing_n be_v defective_a in_o worldly_a thing_n excessive_a so_o in_o this_o proportion_n if_o we_o love_v god_n without_o limitation_n as_o the_o most_o excellent_a object_n and_o our_o neighbour_n as_o ourselves_o this_o be_v to_o proportion_v the_o affection_n to_o the_o object_n our_o affection_n be_v good_a servant_n but_o bad_a master_n limitation_n that_o be_v they_o must_v not_o bear_v rule_n but_o still_o be_v in_o subjection_n to_o their_o several_a limitation_n of_o the_o word_n our_o calling_n the_o common_a good_a without_o which_o the_o best_a affection_n even_o of_o zeal_n and_o love_n may_v be_v evil_a not_o only_o ●ill_a affection_n or_o such_o as_o ●re_n more_o inclinable_a thereto_o but_o even_o the_o best_a must_v ●hus_o be_v try_v if_o they_o make_v ●s_n fit_a for_o god_n service_n ●s_a anger_n if_o we_o can_v fall_v to_o ●ray_v zeal_n if_o we_o can_v re●it_v private_a offence_n etc._n etc._n first_o i_o say_v our_o affection_n word_n must_v be_v inform_v and_o limit_v by_o the_o word_n that_o be_v whereas_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v we_o a_o sure_a word_n both_o as_o a_o light_n shine_v in_o a_o dark_a place_n to_o enlighten_v the_o darkness_n of_o our_o nature_n and_o so_o as_o a_o guide_n to_o the_o well-ordering_a thereof_o if_o our_o affection_n now_o follow_v and_o not_o run_v before_o our_o knowledge_n we_o first_o know_v what_o to_o love_v and_o then_o affect_v the_o same_o and_o if_o our_o affection_n be_v proportionable_a to_o our_o knowledge_n we_o affect_v so_o far_o as_o we_o be_v inform_v and_o persuade_v of_o the_o truth_n and_o according_a to_o the_o particular_a truth_n we_o know_v so_o our_o particular_a affection_n be_v levely_v at_o and_o confine_v thereunto_o this_o be_v a_o certain_a evidence_n of_o the_o true_a light_n and_o order_v thereof_o hereby_o we_o shall_v hold_v out_o and_o continue_v therein_o whereas_o otherwise_o if_o we_o affect_v what_o we_o know_v not_o this_o may_v either_o arise_v from_o some_o tickle_a delight_n of_o the_o flesh_n from_o vainglory_n and_o such_o like_a or_o else_o from_o some_o outward_a

that_o presume_v most_o in_o this_o case_n that_o we_o be_v general_o to_o learn_v the_o very_a first_o ground_n of_o religion_n heb._n 5._o 11._o and_o so_o be_v short_a of_o answer_v the_o mean_a in_o our_o own_o ignorance_n and_o corruption_n three_o our_o affection_n to_o other_o must_v be_v derive_v from_o our_o affection_n to_o ourselves_o we_o must_v begin_v at_o home_n and_o so_o be_v enlarge_v abroad_o so_o love_v other_o out_o of_o love_n to_o ourselves_o so_o to_o be_v zealous_a against_o other_o sin_n as_o to_o begin_v at_o home_n etc._n etc._n and_o second_o our_o affection_n to_o other_o must_v return_v home_o again_o if_o by_o grieve_v for_o other_o sin_n we_o can_v do_v little_a good_a upon_o they_o let_v our_o grief_n return_v home_o for_o our_o own_o sin_n yea_o let_v we_o be_v grieve_v that_o they_o be_v not_o grieve_v four_o our_o affection_n to_o other_o must_v be_v always_o bound_v within_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n &_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n we_o must_v so_o affect_v the_o salvation_n of_o other_o as_o may_v stand_v with_o god_n glory_n with_o the_o good_a of_o his_o church_n according_a to_o his_o word_n we_o must_v so_o grieve_v for_o their_o sin_n as_o that_o we_o submit_v to_o god_n will_v and_o not_o hinder_v our_o calling_n 1._o sam._n 16._o 1._o we_o must_v so_o pity_v they_o as_o not_o to_o harden_v they_o in_o sin_n not_o to_o pamper_v they_o in_o wantonness_n etc._n etc._n second_o towards_o god_n for_o the_o right_a order_n of_o our_o affection_n towards_o god_n god_n this_o general_a rule_n must_v be_v observe_v that_o there_o etc._n in_o regard_n of_o temporal_a thing_n nor_o that_o we_o must_v not_o hope_v well_o of_o they_o in_o charity_n 1._o cor._n 13._o in_o regard_n of_o spiritual_a because_o we_o know_v not_o the_o contrary_a but_o we_o must_v not_o repose_v any_o religious_a confidence_n in_o they_o concern_v salvation_n neither_o hope_n in_o they_o as_o be_v able_a to_o effect_v the_o s●me_n in_o which_o sense_n we_o here_o speak_v of_o these_o affection_n a_o second_o rule_n be_v that_o though_o some_o affection_n respect_v ourselves_o &_o other_o yet_o they_o must_v be_v subordinate_a to_o our_o respect_n of_o god_n our_o affection_n to_o god_n must_v be_v without_o limitation_n we_o can_v love_v he_o enough_o we_o can_v fear_v he_o too_o much_o so_o far_o as_o possible_o we_o may_v our_o affection_n must_v be_v enlarge_v proportionable_o to_o the_o object_n they_o must_v be_v boundless_a and_o endless_a as_o the_o object_n be_v but_o those_o to_o our_o neighbour_n must_v be_v confine_v within_o their_o limit_n both_o subordinate_a to_o god_n and_o second_o as_o our_o calling_n and_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o party_n do_v require_v with_o reference_n still_o to_o god_n glory_n chap._n vi_o of_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o right_a use_n of_o holy_a affection_n first_o hereby_o we_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o profit_n and_o thrive_v in_o all_o well-doing_n for_o as_o the_o thing_n be_v affect_v so_o it_o be_v increase_v and_o continue_v second_o hereby_o we_o shall_v discern_v undoubted_o the_o true_a work_n of_o grace_n begin_v in_o we_o for_o as_o be_v the_o affection_n so_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o heart_n look_v what_o we_o love_v what_o we_o fear_v what_o we_o rejoice_v in_o what_o we_o be_v sorry_a for_o these_o will_v discern_v the_o uprightness_n of_o the_o heart_n three_o hereby_o also_o we_o shall_v approve_v ourselves_o in_o the_o growth_n of_o grace_n for_o as_o our_o affection_n be_v more_o quicken_v to_o holy_a duty_n as_o we_o more_o love_n and_o rejoice_v in_o they_o as_o we_o more_o fear_n and_o hope_n in_o the_o continuance_n of_o they_o as_o we_o be_v more_o grieve_v in_o ourselves_o for_o our_o fail_v be_v more_o desertion_n when_o our_o god_n withdraweth_a the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n from_o us._n second_o the_o time_n of_o violent_a distress_n by_o reason_n of_o acute_a disease_n as_o in_o fever_n power_n of_o melancholy_a etc._n etc._n three_o the_o time_n of_o vehement_a tentation_n by_o the_o malice_n of_o satan_n in_o all_o these_o as_o we_o must_v be_v wise_a to_o judge_v of_o our_o affection_n and_o ourselves_o by_o they_o so_o we_o may_v reap_v sound_a comfort_n thereby_o both_o to_o prevent_v distraction_n and_o despair_n as_o also_o give_v hope_n of_o recovery_n thereout_o as_o first_o general_o that_o our_o affection_n must_v not_o be_v measure_v by_o any_o of_o these_o extraordinary_a condition_n we_o may_v not_o be_v judge_v by_o the_o distemper_n of_o our_o affection_n in_o they_o first_o because_o the_o distemper_n be_v contrary_a to_o the_o main_a bend_v of_o our_o heart_n in_o our_o ordinary_a course_n of_o sanctification_n and_o second_o when_o we_o come_v to_o ourselves_o again_o and_o can_v judge_v right_o of_o thing_n we_o be_v the_o first_o that_o judge_v ourselves_o and_o condemn_v our_o folly_n and_o ignorance_n in_o such_o distem_fw-la
