Tim. 2. vers 1. I Exhort you therefore that first of all prayers supplications intercessions and giuing of thankes be made for all men for Princes and for all that are in authority that we may liue a quiet and peaceable life in all godlinesse and honestie for that is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Sauiour ¶ You shall vnderstande that euery thing in this booke is placed in order as it shall be vsed without turning to and fro sauing the three lessons taken out of the olde Testament of which you may chuse any one as you thinke best for the first lesson at this morning prayer And in Cathedrall Churches the minister may vse eyther of the other two for the first lesson at euening prayer ¶ First the Minister shall with a loude voyce pronounce some one of these three sentences as in the booke of common prayer Ezech. 18 AT what time soeuer a sinner doeth repent him of his sinne from the bottome of his heart I will put all his wickednesse out of my remembrance saith the Lord. Ioel. 2. Rent your heartes and not your garmentes and turne to the Lord your God because he is gentle and merciful he is pacient and of much mercy and such a one that is sorie for your afflictions If we say that we haue no sinne we deceiue our selues and there is no trueth in vs. DEarely beloued brethren the scripture moueth vs in sundrie places to acknowledge and confesse our manifolde sinnes and wickednes and that we shoulde not dissemble nor cloke them before the face of almightie God our heauenly father but confesse thē with an humble lowly penitent obedient heart to the end that we may obtaine forgiuenesse of the same by his infinite goodnesse and mercie And although we ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sinnes before God yet ought wee most chiefly so to do when we assemble and meete together to render thankes for the great benefits that we haue receiued at his handes to set forth his most worthy prayse to heare his most holy worde and to aske those thinges which be requisite and necessary as well for the body as the soule Wherefore I pray beseech you as many as be here present to accompany me with a pure heart humble voyce vnto the throne of the heauenly grace saying after me A generall confession to be said of the whole congregation after the Minister kneeling ALmightie and most mercifull father we haue erred strayed from thy waies like lost sheepe we haue folowed too much the deuices and desires of our owne hearts We haue offended against thy holy Lawes We haue left vndone those things which we ought to haue done and wee haue done those things which we ought not to haue done and there is no helth in vs but thou O Lord haue mercy vpon vs miserable offenders Spare thou them O GOD which confesse their faultes restore thou them that be penitent according to thy promises declared vnto mankind in Christ Iesu our Lord. And graunt O most mercifull father for his sake that we may hereafter liue a godly righteous and sober life to the glorie of thy holy name Amen The absolution to be pronounced by the Minister alone ALmightie God the father of our Lord Iesus Christ which desireth not the death of a sinner but rather that he may turne from his wickednesse and liue and hath giuen power commaundement to his ministers to declare and pronounce to his people being penitent the absolution and remission of their sinnes he pardoneth absolueth all them which truely repent and vnfaynedly beleeue his holy Gospel Wherefore we beseech him to graunt vs true repentance his holy spirite that those thinges may please him which we doe at this present and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holye so that at the last we way come to his eternall ioye through Iesus Christ our Lord. The people shall answere Amen Then shall the Minister begin the Lordes prayer with a lowde voyce OVr father which art in heauen halowed be thy name Thy kingdome come Thy will be done in earth as it is in heauen Giue vs this day our dayly bread And forgiue vs our trespasses as we forgiue them that trespasse against vs. And leade vs not into temptation But deliuer vs from euill Amen Then likewise he shall say O Lord open thou our lippes Answere And our mouth shall shew forth thy prayse Minister O God make speede to saue vs. Answere O Lord make haste to helpe vs. Minister Glorie be to the father c. As it was in the beginning c. Prayse ye the Lorde Then shal be sayd or sung this Psalme following O Come let vs sing vnto the Lord let vs heartily reioyce in the strength of our saluation Let vs come before his presence with thākesgiuing and shewe our selues glad in him with Psalmes For the Lorde is a great God and a great king aboue all gods In his hand are all the corners of the earth and the strength of the hilles is his also The sea is his and he made it and his hands prepared the drie land O come let vs worship and fall downe kneele before the Lorde our maker For he is the Lorde our God and we are the people of his pasture and the sheepe of his hands To day if ye will heare his voyce harden not your hearts as in the prouocation and as in the day of temptation in the wildernesse When your fathers tempted mee proued me and sawe my workes Fourtie yeeres long was I grieued with this generation and sayd It is a people that do erre in their hearts for they haue not knowne my waies Vnto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest Glorie be to the father c. As it was in the beginning c. Domine in virtute Psalm 21. THe King shall reioyce in thy strength O Lord exceeding glad shall he be of thy saluation Thou hast giuen him his hearts desire and hast not denied him the request of his lippes For thou shalt preuent him with the blessings of goodnes and shalt set a crowne of pure golde vpon his head He asked life of thee and thou gauest him a long life euen for euer and euer His honour is great in thy saluation glory and great worship shalt thou lay vpon him For thou shalt giue him euerlasting felicitie and make him glad with the ioy of thy countenance And why because the King
putteth his trust in the Lorde and in the mercy of the most highest he shall not miscarie All thine enemies shall feele thy hande thy right hand shall finde out them that hate thee Thou shalt make them like a fiery ouen in time of thy wrath the Lord shall destroy them in his displeasure and the fire shall consume them Their fruit shalt thou roote out of the earth and their seede from among the children of men For they intended mischiefe against thee and imagined such a deuice as they are not able to perfourme Therefore shalt thou put them to flight and the stringes of thy bowe shalt thou make readie against the face of them Be thou exalted Lord in thine owne strength so will we sing and praise thy power Benedixisti domine Psal 85. LOrd thou art become gracious vnto thy lande thou hast turned away the captiuitie of Iacob Thou hast forgiuen the offence of thy people and couered all their sinnes Thou hast taken away all thy displeasure turned thy selfe from thy wrathfull indignation Turne vs then O God our sauiour and let thine anger cease from vs. Wilt thou be displeased at vs for euer and wilt thou stretch out thy wrath from one generation to another Wilt thou not turne againe and quicken vs that thy people may reioyce in thee Shewe vs thy mercy O Lorde and graunt vs thy saluation I wil hearken what the Lord God wil say concerning me for he shall speake peace vnto his people to his saints that they turne not againe For his saluation is nygh them that feare him that glory may dwell in our land Mercy and trueth are met together righteousnesse and peace haue kyssed eche other Trueth shall florish out of the earth and righteousnesse hath looked downe from heauen Yea the Lorde shall shewe louing kindnesse and our lande shall giue her encrease Righteousnesse shall go before him and he shall direct his going in the way Nisi quia dominus Psalm 124. IF the Lord him selfe had not byn on our side now may Israel say if the Lord him selfe had not bin on our side when men rose vp against vs. They had swalowed vs vp quicke when they were so wrathfully displeased at vs. Yea the waters had drowned vs the streame had gone ouer our soule The deepe waters of the proude had gone euen ouer our soule But praysed be the Lorde which hath not giuen vs ouer for a pray vnto their teeth Our soule is escaped euen as a birde out of the snare of the fowler the snare is broken and we are deliuered Our helpe standeth in the name of the Lorde which hath made heauen and earth ¶ The first Lesson taken out of the xvii xviii.xix and xx Chapters of the second booke of the Chronicles 2. Chr. cha 17. vers 1. a. 3. c. IEhosaphat the sonne of Asa reigned ouer Iuda And the Lorde was with him because he walked in the former wayes of his father Dauid and sought not Baalim But sought the Lorde God of his father and walked in his commaundements and not after the doings of Israel And the Lorde stablished the kingdome in his hand and al Iuda brought him presents so that he had abundance of riches and honour And he lift vp his heart vnto the waies of the Lord and he put downe yet more of the high places and groues out of Iuda In the thirde yeere of his reigne he sent to his Lordes euen to Benhail Obadia Zacharia Nethanel to Michaia that they should teach in the cities of Iuda And with them he sent Leuites euen Semaia Nethania Zebadia Asael Semiramoth Iehonathan Adonia Tobia and Tobadonia Leuites and with them Elisama and Ioram Priests And they taught in Iuda and had the booke of the lawe of God with them and went about throughout all the cities of Iuda and taught the people And the feare of the Lorde fell vpon all the kingdomes of the lands that were round about Iuda and they fought not against Iehosaphat 2. Chro. chap. 18. vers 3. a. 31. c. And when Iehosaphat taking part with Achab in his warres against the king of Syria was in great danger to be slayne he cryed vnto the Lorde and the Lorde helped him and chased his enemies away from him but wicked Achab king of Israel was there slaine 2. Chro. chap. 19. vers 1.4 a. c. And Iehosaphat came home againe in peace to Hierusalem dwelt there And Iehosaphat went out to the people from Beerseba to mount Ephraim and brought them againe vnto the Lorde God of their fathers And he set Iudges in the Lande throughout all the strong cities of Iuda citie by citie and sayd to the iudges Take heede what ye do for ye execute not the iudgementes of man but of God which is with you in the iudgement Wherefore now let the feare of the Lorde be vpon you and take heede and be doing the thing that pleaseth him for there is no vnrighteousnes with the Lorde our God that he should haue any respect of persons or take rewardes Moreouer in Hierusalem did Iehosaphat set of the Leuites and of the Priestes and of the ancient fathers ouer Israel in the iudgement and cause of the Lord and they returned againe to Hierusalem And hee charged them saying Thus shal ye do in the feare of the Lord faythfully with a pure heart What cause soeuer come to you of your brethren that dwel in their cities betweene bloud bloud betweene lawe and commaundment betweene statutes and ordinances yee shall warne them that they trespasse not against the Lorde and so wrath come vpon you and your brethren thus do and ye shal not offend And beholde Amaria the high priest is among you in al matters of the Lord Zebadia the sonne of Ismael a ruler of the house of Iuda for al the Kinges matters there be officers of the Leuites also before you take courage to you therefore and be doing manfully and the Lord shal be with such as be good After this there came an exceeding great armie of the Moabites and Ammonites against Iehosaphat And Iehosaphat feared 2. Chro. chap. 20. vers 1.2.3 a. set himselfe to seeke the Lord and proclaimed fasting throughout al Iuda And he with all Iuda a. 5. c. 18. and the inhabitantes of Hierusalem prayed and fell before the Lorde worshipping the Lord. d. 22. c. And the enemies fel out amongst themselues and slue one another vntill they were al destroyed And Iehosaphat and his people had the spoyle of goods rayment iewels more then they could carrie away And they blessed the Lord and called the place The valley of blessing vnto this day And they returned to Hierusalem with great ioy gladnes And the feare of God fel on the kingdoms of al landes when they had heard that the Lorde fought against the enemies of Israel And so the Realme of Iehosaphat was in tranquillitie and his
God gaue him rest on euery side Or this may be the first Lesson The historie of King Hezekia taken out of the fourth booke of Kings the 18.19 and 20. Chapters 4. Reg. chap. 18. a. 1.3 HEzekia the sonne of Ahaz reigned ouer Iuda and he did that which is right in the sight of the Lorde according to all as did Dauid his father verse 4 He put away the high places and brake the Images and cut downe the groues and all to brake the brasen serpent that Moses had made for vnto those dayes the children of Israel did burne sacrifice to it verse 5 and he called it Nehustan He trusted in the Lord God of Israel so that after him was none like him among all the Kings of Iuda neither were there any such before him verse 6 For he claue to the Lorde departed not from him but kept his commaundementes which the Lorde commaunded Moses And the Lorde was with him verse B. 7 so that he prospered in all things which he tooke in hande and he resisted the King of Assyria verse B. 13 and serued him not Therefore in the fourteenth yeere of king Hezekia did Sennacherib King of Assyria come vp against all the strong cities of Iuda verse C. 17. 18 and tooke them And he sent worde to King Hezekia by his captayne Rabsakeh verse 19 who sayde Tel Hezekia thus sayth the great king euen the king of Assyria What confidence is this thou hast or on whom doest thou trust that thou rebellest against mee If ye saye Ye trust in the Lorde our God is not that hee whose high places and whose altars Hezekia hath put downe And Rabsakeh stoode and cryed vnto the Iewes that stoode vpon the walles verse E. 28 with a lowde voyce saying Heare the wordes of the great King euen the King of Assyria verse 29 Thus sayth the King Let not Hezekia beguile you for he shall not be able to deliuer you out of my hands verse 30 Neither let Hezekia make you to trust in the Lorde saying The Lorde shall surely deliuer vs and this citie shall not be giuen ouer into the handes of the King of Assyria verse 32 Hearken not vnto Hezekia for he beguileth you saying The Lorde shall deliuer vs. verse 33 Hath euery one of the gods of the nations deliuered his lande out of the hande of the King of Assyria verse 34 Where is the God of Hamath of Arphad and where is the God of Sepharuaim Hena and Iua did they deliuer Samaria out of mine handes verse 35 And what god is among all the gods of the nations that hath deliuered his land out of mine hand Shall the Lord deliuer Hierusalem out of mine hande 4. Reg. 19. vers 1. a. When king Hezekia heard of these words he rent his clothes and put on sackcloth and came into the house of the Lord and sent Eliakim verse 2 which was the Stewarde of the householde and Sobna the Scribe and the Elders of the Priestes clothed in sacke to Isai the Prophet the sonne of Amos verse 3 And they said vnto him Thus saith Hezekia This day is a daye of tribulation and of rebuke and blasphemie verse 4 Peraduenture the Lorde thy God will heare all the wordes of Rabsakeh whome the king of Assyria his master hath sent to raile on the liuing God and to rebuke him with wordes which the Lorde thy God hath heard and lyft thou vp thy prayer for the remnant that are left verse 5 So the seruaunts of King Hezekia came to Isai verse 6 And Isai sayde vnto them So shal you say to your master Thus sayeth the Lorde Be not afrayde of the wordes which thou hast heard with which the yong men of the kinge of Assyria haue rayled on me Beholde verse B. 7. I will put him in another minde and he shall heare tydings and so returne to his owne lande and I will bring to passe that he shal fall vpon the sworde euen in his owne lande verse 9 And when Sennacherib had worde that Thirhaka King of Ethiopia was come out to fight against him he departed sent messengers vnto Hezekia verse 10 saying Thus speake to Hezekia king of Iuda saying Let not thy God deceyue thee in whom thou trustest saying Hierusalem shal not be deliuered into the hande of the king of Assyria Beholde verse 11 thou hast heard what the kinges of Assyria haue done to all landes howe they haue vtterly destroyed them verse 14 and shalt thou escape And Hezekia receyued the letter of the hande of the messengers and readde it and Hezekia went vp into the house of the Lorde and layde it abroade before the Lorde verse 15 And Hezekia prayed before the Lorde and sayde O Lorde God of Israel which dwellest betweene the Cherubims thou art God alone ouer all the kingdomes of the earth thou hast made heauen and earth verse 16 Lord bowe downe thine eare and heare open Lorde thine eyes I beseech thee and see and heare the wordes of Sennacherib which hath sent this man to rayle on the liuing God verse 17 Of a trueth Lorde the kings of Assyria haue destroyed nations and their landes verse 18 and haue set fire on their gods for they are no gods but the worke of the handes of man euen of wood and stone and they destroyed them verse 19 Nowe therefore O Lorde our God I beseech thee saue thou vs out of his hande that all the kingdomes of the earth may knowe that thou onely art the Lorde God verse 20 And Isai the sonne of Amos sent to Hezekia saying Thus saith the Lorde God of Israel That which thou hast prayed mee concerning Sennacherib King of Assyria I haue heard it Wherefore thus sayth the Lord concerning the king of Assyria He shall not come to this citie verse E. 32. nor shoote an arrowe into it nor come before it with shield nor cast a banke against it verse 33 but shall go backe againe the way he came shall not come into this citie saith the Lord. For I will defend this citie to saue it verse 34 for mine owne sake for Dauid my seruants sake verse 35 And the selfe same night the angel of the Lord went out and smote in the hoast of the Assyrians an hundred fourescore and fiue thousande when the remnant were vp earely in the morning beholde they were all dead coarses verse 36 And so Sennacherib king of Assyria auoyded and departed went againe and dwelt at Niniue verse 37 And as he was in a temple worshipping Nisroch his god Adramelech and Saresar his owne sonnes smote him with the sword and they escaped into the lande of Armenia Asarhaddon his sonne raigned in his steade 4 Reg. 20. chap. vers 1. a. About that time was Hezekia sicke vnto death the Prophet Isai the sonne of Amos came to him and said vnto him Thus saith the Lord Put thine houshold in an order verse 2 for thou shalt die and not
liue and Hezekia turned his face to the wall and prayed vnto the Lorde saying verse 3 I beseeche thee O Lord remember nowe how I haue walked before thee in trueth with a perfect heart haue done that which is good in thy sight and Hezekia wept sore verse 4 And afore Isai was gone out into the middle of the court the worde of the Lord came to him saying verse 5 Turne againe and tell Hezekia the captaine of my people Thus sayeth the Lorde God of Dauid thy father I haue heard thy prayer and seene thy teares and beholde I will heale thee so that on the thirde daye thou shall goe vp to the house of the Lorde verse 6 And I will adde vnto thy dayes yet fifteene yeeres and I will deliuer thee and this citie out of the hand of the king of Assyria and wil defend this citie for mine owne sake and for Dauid my seruants sake verse 7 And Esai saide Take a lumpe of dried figs they tooke and laid it on the sore and he recouered and had exceeding much honour and riches Or this may be the first Lesson The summe of the historie of king Iosia taken out of the fourth booke of the Kings the 22. and 23. Chapters and the 2. of the Chronicles the 34. Chapter 2. Chronic. Cha. 34. vers 1.2 a IOsia raigned in Hierusalem he did that which was right in the sight of the Lorde and walked in the wayes of Dauid his father and bowed neither to the right hande nor to the left verse 3 In the eyght yere of his raigne when he was yet a childe he began to seeke after the God of Dauid his father and in the twelfth yeere he began to purge Iuda and Hierusalem from the high places groues carued images and images of metall verse 4 And they brake downe the altars of Baalim euen in his presence and other images that were in greater honour then they he caused to be destroyed and the groues carued images and images of metall he brake and made dust of them and strawed it vpon the graues of them that had offred to them And he burnt the bones of the Priestes vpon the altars of them verse 5 and clensed Iuda Hierusalem And in the eyghteenth yeere of his raigne 4. Reg. 22. chap vers 3.4 a. when hee had purged the lande the temple he sent Saphan the Scribe to Helkia the high Priest that he shoulde see the decayed places of the temple repaired with such money as the keepers of the porche of the house of the Lord had gathered of the people verse a. 5. 6. And Helkia verse B. 8. 9. 10. as he was about the kinges commaundement found in the temple the booke of the lawe of the Lord and deliuered it vnto Saphan who brought it vnto the king and read in it before him verse 11. 12. When the king had heard the wordes of the booke of the lawe he rent his clothes commaunded Helkia the priest with certaine others saying Goe ye and enquire of the Lorde for me and for the people and for all Iuda verse 13 concerning the wordes of the booke that is founde for great is the wrath of the Lorde that is kindled against vs because our fathers haue not hearkened to the wordes of this booke to do according to all that which is written therein for vs. So Helkia the high Priest verse 14 with others went vnto Hulda the Prophetisse and they communed with her And shee answered them verse 15 Thus sayth the Lorde God of Israel Tell the man that sent you to me Thus sayth the Lorde Behold verse 16 I will bring euill vpon this place and on the inhabiters thereof euen all the woordes of the booke which the king of Iuda hath read verse 17 because they haue forsaken me and haue burnt incense to other gods to anger me with al the workes of their hands my wrath therefore is kindled agaynst this place and shal not be quenched But to the king of Iuda verse 18 which sent you to aske counsell of the Lord so shall ye say Thus saith the Lord God of Israel verse 19 Because thine heart did melte and because thou hast humbled thy selfe before the Lorde when thou heardest what I spake against this place against the inhabiters of the same howe that they shoulde be destroyed and accursed and hast rent thy clothes and wept before me that I also haue heard sayeth the Lorde verse 20 Beholde therefore I will receiue thee vnto thy fathers and thou shalt be put into thy graue in peace and thine eyes shal not see all the euill which I wil bring vpon this place And they brought the king worde againe 4. Reg. cha 23. vers 1. a. And then the king sent and there gathered together vnto him all the Elders of Iuda and of Hierusalem verse 2 And the king went vp into the house of the Lord with al the men of Iuda and al the inhabiters of Hierusalem with the Priestes and Prophets and all the people both small and great and hee read in the eares of them all the wordes of the booke of the couenant which was found in the house of the Lorde verse 3 And the king stoode by a piller and made a couenant before the Lord that they should walke after the Lord and keepe his commaundementes his witnesses and his statutes with all their heart and with all their soule and make good the wordes of the said couenant that were written in the foresaide booke and al the people consented to the couenant verse 4 And the King commaunded Helkia the high Priest and the inferior Priestes and the keepers of the ornaments to bring out of the temple of the Lorde all the vessels that were made for Baal for the groues and for all the hoast of heauen and he burnt them without Hierusalem in the fieldes of Cedron and caried the ashes of them into Bethel verse 5 And he put downe the Priestes of Baal whom the kings of Iuda had founded to burne incense in the high places and cities of Iuda that were round about Hierusalem and also them that burnt incense vnto Baal to the Sunne to the Moone to the Planets to al the hoast of heauen And moreouer all workers with spirits verse 24 and soothsayers images idoles and all the abominations that were spyed in the lande of Iuda and in Hierusalem these did Iosia put out of the way to perfourme the wordes of the lawe which were written in the booke that Helkia the Priest found in the house of the Lorde verse 25 Like vnto him was there no king before him that turned to the Lorde with all his heart with al his soule al his might according to all the lawe of Moses neyther after him arose there any such as he Te Deum WE praise thee O God we knowledge thee to be the Lorde All the earth doth worship thee the father euerlasting To thee
of Iesus Christ our Lorde Amen The third Collect for grace O Lorde our heauenly father almightie euerlasting God which hast safely brought vs to the beginning of this day defende vs in the same with thy mightie power grant that this day we fal into no sinne neither runne into any kinde of danger but that al our doings may be ordred by thy gouernance to doe alwaies that is righteous in thy sight through Iesus Christ our Lord Amen It is ordered that the Letanie shall not be omitted the seuenteenth day of Nouember though it fall vpon Munday Tuesday Thursday or Saterday O God the father of heauen haue mercie vpon vs miserable sinners O God the father of heauen c. That it may please thee to keepe and strengthen in the true worshipping of thee in righteousnesse and holinesse of life thy seruant Elizabeth our most gratious Queene and gouernour VVe beseech thee to heare vs good Lord. That it may please thee to illuminate al Byshops Pastours and Ministers of the Church with true knowledge and vnderstanding of thy worde and that both by their preaching and liuing they may set it forth and shewe it accordingly We beseech thee to heare c. That it maye please thee to strengthen suche as doo stande and to comforte and helpe the weake hearted and to rayse vppe them that fall and fynallie to beate downe Satan vnder our feete We beseech thee to heare c. That it may please thee to succour helpe and comfort all that be in danger necessitie and tribulation We beseech thee to heare c. That it may please thee to preserue all that trauaile by lande or by water all women labouring of childe all sicke persons and yong children and to shew thy pitie vpon all prisoners and captiues We beseech thee to heare c. That it may please thee to defende and prouide for the fatherlesse children and widowes and all that be desolate and oppressed We beseech thee to heare c. That it may please thee to haue mercy vpon all men We beseech thee to heare c. That it may please thee to forgiue our enemies persecutours slanderers and to turne their hearts We beseech thee to heare c.
