before_o other_o yet_o they_o shall_v not_o content_v themselves_o with_o those_o service_n which_o they_o perform_v together_o unless_o god_n and_o their_o conscience_n may_v sometime_o meet_v in_o secret_a and_o as_o our_o saviour_n choose_v for_o himself_o private_a and_o solitary_a place_n where_o he_o may_v with_o more_o freedom_n pray_v unto_o his_o father_n so_o do_v he_o give_v the_o as_o our_o sorrow_n will_v thence_o appear_v not_o to_o be_v hypocritical_a so_o will_v it_o also_o be_v clear_a unto_o we_o that_o it_o be_v not_o natural_a nor_o for_o company_n such_o as_o may_v be_v in_o a_o civil_a man_n who_o see_v a_o great_a many_o weep_n and_o mourn_v can_v hardly_o refrain_v himself_o from_o tear_n but_o will_v be_v apt_a and_o ready_a to_o lament_v with_o they_o second_o there_o be_v no_o man_n or_o woman_n but_o have_v some_o sin_n or_o other_o which_o be_v not_o mere_a for_o they_o to_o acknowledge_v before_o their_o near_a friend_n because_o such_o be_v the_o corruption_n of_o their_o nature_n they_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o think_v the_o worse_a of_o the_o party_n the_o most_o love_a and_o wise_a husband_n that_o be_v if_o his_o wife_n shall_v discover_v unto_o he_o all_o her_o thought_n and_o ill_a affection_n will_v entertain_v somewhat_o a_o hard_a conceit_n of_o she_o then_o before_o he_o do_v and_o therefore_o god_n will_v have_v many_o sinful_a cogitation_n and_o motion_n lay_v open_a only_o unto_o himself_o who_o be_v infinite_o merciful_a and_o pitiful_a and_o not_o unto_o any_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n beside_o this_o throughout_o the_o whole_a week_n perform_v any_o service_n unto_o the_o lord_n in_o secret_a never_o conscionable_o meditate_v on_o the_o word_n never_o earnest_o bewail_v and_o confess_v their_o hide_a corruption_n never_o fervent_o cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n for_o the_o save_a grace_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n nor_o perform_v any_o such_o duty_n apart_o as_o all_o christian_n be_v bind_v to_o do_v such_o kind_n of_o person_n may_v assure_v themselves_o that_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o right_a with_o god_n and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n which_o draw_v those_o in_o who_o it_o reign_v unto_o the_o performance_n of_o good_a duty_n apart_o as_o well_o as_o with_o company_n in_o their_o closert_n in_o their_o chamber_n in_o the_o field_n or_o in_o some_o such_o private_a place_n or_o other_o as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o church_n or_o with_o the_o whole_a society_n where_o they_o live_v how_o much_o more_o be_v those_o to_o be_v condemn_v who_o be_v so_o far_o from_o serve_v the_o lord_n in_o secret_a that_o they_o either_o refuse_v to_o do_v it_o in_o public_a or_o if_o they_o afford_v their_o bodily_a presence_n yet_o they_o be_v idle_a or_o profane_a or_o wanton_a in_o their_o look_n and_o in_o their_o gesture_n let_v all_o that_o be_v near_o they_o see_v the_o vile_a disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n by_o their_o lewd_a and_o abominable_a carriage_n these_o sinful_a wretch_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v excuse_v by_o be_v at_o religious_a exercise_n that_o they_o be_v much_o to_o be_v condemn_v for_o that_o in_o the_o land_n of_o righteousness_n as_o the_o prophet_n speak_v they_o work_v wickedness_n and_o in_o the_o place_n where_o they_o shall_v show_v all_o manner_n of_o holiness_n they_o express_v such_o notable_a profaneness_n these_o be_v even_o like_o judas_n who_o be_v plot_v to_o betray_v his_o master_n even_o then_o when_o he_o be_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n to_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o they_o shall_v speed_v even_o as_o he_o do_v for_o when_o affliction_n and_o misery_n seize_v upon_o they_o as_o come_v it_o will_v soon_o or_o late_a if_o they_o prevent_v it_o not_o by_o hearty_a repentance_n then_o shall_v they_o not_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v before_o the_o lord_n nor_o before_o the_o face_n of_o their_o accuse_a conscience_n but_o shall_v be_v overwhelm_v with_o horror_n and_o amazement_n and_o be_v moreready_o to_o lay_v violent_a hand_n on_o themselves_o then_o to_o seek_v unto_o the_o lord_n for_o mercy_n who_o they_o have_v so_o hainouslie_o and_o presumptuous_o offend_v second_o let_v we_o hence_o learn_v to_o be_v the_o same_o alone_a for_o matter_n of_o godliness_n as_o we_o be_v in_o company_n and_o to_o do_v duty_n when_o no_o body_n see_v we_o even_o because_o god_n behold_v we_o as_o well_o as_o when_o many_o eye_n be_v cast_v upon_o us._n this_o will_v be_v a_o testimony_n unto_o our_o soul_n of_o great_a sincerity_n and_o uprightness_n and_o these_o private_a exercise_n of_o religion_n will_v marvellous_o fit_v we_o for_o the_o public_a and_o thence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o many_o be_v so_o loath_a to_o appear_v before_o god_n in_o the_o congregation_n or_o in_o the_o family_n and_o do_v feel_v the_o service_n of_o god_n so_o tedious_a and_o wearisome_a because_o their_o heart_n have_v not_o be_v exercise_v therewith_o in_o secret_a for_o he_o that_o deal_v with_o his_o own_o soul_n alone_o shall_v find_v so_o many_o defect_n in_o himself_o that_o he_o will_v be_v very_o desirous_a of_o the_o help_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o public_a assembly_n therefore_o let_v we_o tie_v ourselves_o every_o day_n to_o spend_v some_o time_n in_o meditate_v on_o the_o word_n in_o search_v our_o heart_n in_o humble_v ourselves_o for_o our_o offence_n past_a &_o present_a in_o pray_v to_o the_o lord_n to_o strengthen_v we_o where_o we_o be_v weak_a to_o resolve_v we_o where_o we_o be_v in_o doubt_n to_o show_v we_o our_o error_n and_o to_o direct_v we_o in_o the_o right_a way_n to_o let_v we_o see_v our_o want_n and_o to_o supply_v they_o of_o his_o rich_a grace_n let_v we_o i_o say_v constant_o perform_v these_o and_o the_o like_a duty_n in_o secret_a and_o then_o shall_v it_o be_v plain_a unto_o our_o soul_n that_o we_o be_v guide_v by_o god_n good_a spirit_n and_o howsoever_o the_o devil_n will_v object_v that_o we_o be_v not_o sincere_a because_o we_o have_v many_o time_n more_o in_o show_v outward_o than_o we_o have_v in_o substance_n inward_o yet_o hereby_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o approve_v the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o heart_n that_o albeit_o we_o have_v not_o that_o within_o we_o which_o we_o seem_v to_o have_v yet_o we_o desire_v to_o have_v it_o and_o sword_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o pope_n or_o of_o satan_n than_o it_o stand_v they_o upon_o to_o beware_v of_o god_n ordinance_n but_o see_v none_o but_o atheist_n will_v deny_v but_o it_o be_v order_v by_o god_n overruling_a hand_n they_o take_v a_o bad_a course_n to_o escape_v his_o stroke_n for_o where_o can_v they_o hide_v themselves_o but_o he_o will_v find_v they_o out_o and_o whither_o can_v they_o flee_v from_o his_o all-seeing_a presence_n he_o can_v take_v away_o the_o infection_n where_o it_o be_v and_o bring_v it_o even_o in_o a_o moment_n where_o it_o be_v not_o and_o therefore_o go_v where_o they_o can_v they_o go_v in_o continual_a danger_n for_o where_o be_v the_o sword_n of_o god_n most_o likely_a to_o smite_v but_o where_o he_o be_v most_o displease_v and_o where_o there_o be_v most_o profaneness_n and_o great_a contempt_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n therefore_o if_o they_o will_v escape_v let_v they_o fall_v down_o before_o the_o lord_n and_o humble_v themselves_o as_o david_n do_v and_o not_o be_v so_o much_o afraid_a of_o their_o neighbour_n that_o have_v the_o plague_n as_o of_o sin_n that_o bring_v the_o plague_n and_o run_v not_o so_o much_o from_o the_o occasion_n of_o this_o sickness_n though_o all_o good_a care_n must_v be_v have_v that_o way_n as_o from_o the_o cause_n which_o if_o we_o can_v do_v then_o either_o god_n will_v spare_v we_o and_o exempt_v we_o from_o this_o stroke_n or_o else_o give_v we_o comfort_v under_o it_o and_o deliverance_n from_o it_o by_o life_n or_o death_n make_v it_o a_o mean_n cheerfulness_n as_o they_o shall_v this_o and_o that_o i_o do_v say_v they_o to_o the_o utmost_a of_o my_o power_n but_o alas_o all_o will_v not_o maintain_v i_o and_o i_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o bring_v the_o year_n about_o now_o you_o do_v not_o sit_v still_o as_o god_n will_v have_v you_o but_o you_o take_v his_o burden_n upon_o your_o shoulder_n for_o do_v you_o that_o which_o god_n bid_v you_o and_o he_o have_v say_v i_o will_v care_v for_o you_o the_o reason_n why_o there_o be_v such_o cark_n and_o care_v such_o tumble_v and_o toss_v be_v because_o man_n think_v there_o be_v none_o to_o care_n for_o they_o but_o themslue_n now_o if_o that_o be_v true_a it_o stand_v man_n upon_o indeed_o to_o bestir_v themselves_o and_o to_o busy_v their_o thought_n day_n and_o night_n about_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o world_n but_o see_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v protest_v that_o he_o care_v for_o we_o what_o need_n have_v we_o to_o perplex_v our_o heart_n with_o some_o necessary_a vexation_n and_o distraction_n sure_o it_o argue_v great_a corruption_n in_o we_o when_o we_o give_v way_n to_o such_o distrustful_a thought_n for_o either_o we_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o god_n do_v care_n for_o we_o or_o at_o least_o we_o imagine_v that_o his_o care_n be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o we_o both_o which_o shall_v be_v far_o from_o the_o heart_n of_o all_o true_a christian_n let_v we_o therefore_o strive_v against_o our_o unbelief_n and_o give_v unto_o god_n the_o praise_n of_o his_o truth_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o of_o his_o alsufficiency_n and_o then_o fix_v our_o hope_n upon_o he_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v ashamed_a but_o according_a to_o our_o faith_n it_o shall_v be_v unto_o us._n the_o five_o sermon_n isaiah_n 30._o verse_n 8.9_o verse_n 8._o now_o go_v perpetual_a desgrace_n and_o reproach_n now_o because_o they_o will_v hardly_o yield_v unto_o this_o charge_n to_o wit_n that_o they_o be_v traitor_n against_o god_n in_o seek_v unto_o the_o king_n of_o egypt_n for_o aid_n but_o will_v object_v that_o they_o do_v it_o in_o policy_n and_o in_o good_a meaning_n for_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o church_n and_o commonwealth_n and_o do_v rest_n on_o god_n nevertheless_o he_o put_v off_o that_o by_o fay_v that_o they_o be_v lie_v child_n full_o of_o hypocrisy_n and_o dissimulation_n pretend_v to_o send_v into_o egypt_n in_o godly_a wisdom_n whereas_o it_o proceed_v indeed_o from_o their_o wretched_a unbelief_n and_o because_o it_o be_v not_o safe_a for_o he_o to_o say_v this_o in_o general_a unless_o he_o can_v prove_v it_o therefore_o he_o allege_v against_o they_o this_o particular_a that_o they_o will_v not_o hear_v the_o law_n of_o the_o lord_n they_o be_v drive_v to_o hear_v now_o and_o then_o but_o they_o do_v it_o not_o willing_o nor_o with_o a_o good_a affection_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v just_o condemn_v as_o rebel_n against_o the_o lord_n in_o all_o these_o word_n than_o be_v set_v down_o a_o grievous_a complaint_n against_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o jew_n wherein_o we_o may_v observe_v 1._o first_o god_n charge_n that_o he_o give_v unto_o the_o prophet_n that_o he_o shall_v prefer_v a_o indictment_n against_o they_o not_o only_o for_o their_o present_n but_o for_o their_o everlasting_a shame_n if_o they_o do_v persist_v in_o their_o evil_a course_n 2._o the_o reason_n why_o he_o take_v this_o cunning_a to_o defend_v their_o viie_a practice_n verse_n 8._o now_o go_v and_o write_v it_o etc._n etc._n in_o that_o the_o prophet_n be_v command_v to_o proclaim_v unto_o all_o man_n that_o these_o unbelieve_a jew_n be_v rebel_n against_o god_n this_o be_v the_o point_n hence_o to_o be_v observe_v that_o open_v sin_n must_v have_v open_a rebuke_n and_o this_fw-mi doct._n 1_o grace_n though_o land_n and_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o ruler_n be_v chief_a in_o it_o the_o prophet_n be_v charge_v to_o speak_v against_o they_o and_o to_o write_v against_o they_o and_o to_o shame_v they_o not_o only_o for_o the_o present_a but_o for_o ever_o if_o they_o do_v not_o turn_v to_o the_o lord_n by_o sound_a repentance_n the_o like_a be_v enjoin_v this_o same_o prophet_n chap._n 58._o vers_fw-la 1._o cry_v aloud_o 58._o isa_n 58._o spare_v not_o lift_v up_o thy_o voice_n like_o a_o trumpet_n and_o show_v my_o people_n their_o transgression_n and_o the_o house_n of_o jacob_n their_o sin_n off_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o by_o sound_a repentance_n three_o it_o make_v great_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n when_o he_o execute_v his_o judgement_n upon_o they_o in_o this_o world_n for_o those_o that_o have_v hear_v their_o gross_a and_o heinous_a offence_n inveigh_v against_o and_o withal_o be_v witness_n of_o their_o wilful_a continuance_n therein_o they_o can_v but_o in_o their_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o offence_n so_o to_o apply_v their_o reproof_n according_o if_o they_o dishonour_v god_n open_o let_v they_o hear_v of_o it_o open_o and_o if_o they_o will_v set_v their_o sin_n upon_o the_o stage_n let_v we_o set_v their_o shame_n there_o also_o that_o those_o that_o be_v witness_n of_o the_o one_o may_v be_v also_o witness_n of_o the_o other_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v be_v injurious_a unto_o god_n and_o unto_o man_n unto_o the_o offender_n and_o unto_o ourselves_o because_o their_o blood_n shall_v be_v require_v at_o our_o hand_n therefore_o let_v we_o careful_o look_v unto_o this_o duty_n and_o the_o more_o opposition_n we_o find_v against_o the_o performance_n thereof_o the_o more_o let_v we_o pray_v for_o strength_n and_o courage_n to_o go_v through_o ear_n you_o have_v always_o resist_v the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o your_o father_n do_v so_o do_v you_o etc._n etc._n indeed_o hereupon_o they_o gnash_v their_o tooth_n at_o he_o and_o stop_v their_o continual_a swear_n or_o sabbath-breaking_a or_o brawl_v or_o whore_v or_o steal_v or_o any_o the_o like_a inordinate_a course_n so_o that_o by_o our_o ill_a conversation_n we_o cause_v god_n glorious_a name_n to_o be_v ill_o speak_v of_o we_o must_v look_v to_o hear_v of_o it_o to_o our_o just_a disgrace_n and_o if_o we_o set_v light_a by_o god_n glory_n there_o be_v no_o reason_n that_o his_o servant_n shall_v make_v any_o reckon_n of_o our_o credit_n let_v man_n therefore_o be_v careful_a to_o avoid_v public_a evil_n or_o else_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o public_a rebuke_n which_o be_v the_o best_a medicine_n for_o the_o recover_n of_o their_o sick_a and_o sinful_a soul_n 8._o now_o go_v and_o write_v it_o before_o they_o in_o a_o book_n that_o that_o it_o may_v be_v for_o the_o last_o day_n for_o ever_o and_o ever_o hence_o arise_v this_o doctrine_n that_o that_o testimony_n shall_v abide_v with_o every_o man_n doct._n 2_o everlasting_a god_n testimony_n be_v the_o calumniation_n and_o slander_n of_o man_n can_v nothing_o at_o all_o impeach_v his_o credit_n but_o do_v rather_o cause_v it_o to_o shine_v out_o more_o clear_o the_o scripture_n abound_v with_o
