that_o seek_v for_o comfort_n that_o they_o may_v follow_v the_o ready_a path_n that_o lead_v to_o eternal_a happiness_n therefore_o from_o the_o first_o set_v forth_o even_o from_o the_o time_n of_o preferment_n of_o our_o sin_n if_o they_o have_v be_v our_o companion_n in_o youth_n in_o age_n they_o will_v be_v our_o counsellor_n and_o master_n too_o therefore_o the_o best_a season_n to_o seek_v god_n in_o be_v to_o seek_v he_o early_o before_o the_o flood_n of_o wrath_n arise_v and_o the_o heap_n of_o sin_n stand_v up_o like_o a_o rampire_a wall_n between_o god_n and_o us._n therefore_o say_v our_o saviour_n christ_n if_o you_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n first_o all_o other_o thing_n shall_v be_v cast_v upon_o you_o he_o say_v not_o seek_v the_o world_n first_o that_o heaven_n therefore_o what_o soever_o thou_o be_v high_a or_o low_a judge_v charitable_o of_o this_o my_o work_n thus_o wish_v thou_o good_a reader_n not_o only_o to_o look_v on_o the_o title_n but_o read_v it_o to_o the_o end_n and_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o thou_o shall_v be_v preserve_v from_o profaneness_n idolatry_n and_o superstition_n william_n the_o pilgrim_n journey_n towards_o heaven_n as_o god_n have_v create_v all_o thing_n for_o his_o own_o sake_n and_o man_n be_v head_n of_o all_o be_v make_v lord_n and_o ruler_n of_o they_o and_o so_o consequent_o they_o to_o serve_v he_o he_o i_o creature_n be_v but_o here_o to_o serve_v our_o use_n and_o to_o that_o end_n only_o be_v they_o send_v of_o god_n we_o shall_v therefore_o be_v indifferent_a to_o all_o these_o creature_n as_o to_o riches_n or_o poverty_n to_o health_n or_o sickness_n to_o honour_n or_o contempt_n etc._n etc._n and_o we_o shall_v desire_n but_o so_o much_o or_o little_a of_o they_o as_o be_v best_a for_o we_o towards_o the_o attainment_n of_o our_o say_a end_n and_o but_o pretend_v for_o whosoever_o desire_v seek_v or_o use_v these_o creature_n more_o than_o for_o this_o run_v from_o the_o end_n for_o which_o he_o come_v hither_o and_o for_o that_o the_o most_o part_n of_o all_o that_o be_v in_o this_o world_n not_o only_o infidel_n but_o also_o christian_n do_v run_v amiss_o in_o this_o point_n and_o do_v not_o take_v care_n of_o that_o affair_n and_o business_n for_o which_o alone_o they_o be_v create_v and_o place_v here_o in_o this_o world_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o christ_n and_o his_o holy_a saint_n both_o before_o the_o appear_v in_o the_o flesh_n and_o after_o have_v speak_v so_o hardly_o and_o severe_o of_o the_o very_a small_a number_n that_o shall_v be_v save_v even_o among_o christian_n and_o have_v utter_v certain_a speech_n which_o seem_v very_o rigorous_a to_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o to_o such_o as_o be_v most_o touch_v therein_o as_o among_o other_o thing_n that_o a_o greedy_a lover_n of_o this_o world_n can_v be_v save_v 1._o john_n 29._o verse_n and_o those_o that_o greedy_o desire_v to_o be_v rich_a fall_v into_o many_o temptation_n and_o noisome_a lust_n which_o draw_v they_o into_o destruction_n and_o perdition_n and_o that_o such_o rich_a man_n do_v enter_v as_o hardly_o into_o heaven_n as_o a_o camel_n through_o a_o needle_n eye_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o which_o manner_n of_o speech_n do_v stand_v in_o this_o that_o a_o rich_a worldling_n attend_v with_o his_o industry_n and_o care_n to_o heap_v up_o riches_n as_o the_o fashion_n be_v can_v attend_v to_o that_o for_o which_o he_o come_v into_o this_o world_n and_o so_o consequent_o can_v never_o attain_v heaven_n except_o god_n work_v a_o miracle_n and_o thereby_o cause_v he_o to_o spend_v out_o his_o riches_n to_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o by_o grace_n to_o call_v he_o unto_o the_o gospel_n as_o often_o he_o do_v and_o so_o do_v make_v less_o the_o camel_n in_o such_o sort_n as_o he_o may_v pass_v the_o needle_n eye_n whereof_o we_o have_v a_o example_n in_o the_o gospel_n by_o zacheus_n who_o be_v a_o very_a rich_a man_n and_o a_o great_a sinner_n present_o upon_o the_o call_n of_o christ_n he_o be_v in_o a_o fig_n tree_n and_o so_o enter_v into_o his_o house_n but_o much_o more_o as_o appear_v into_o his_o heart_n whereby_o he_o receive_v faith_n and_o upon_o the_o same_o do_v resolve_v himself_o to_o change_v his_o former_a life_n touch_v riches_n and_o at_o one_o blow_n to_o begin_v withal_o give_v away_o half_a of_o his_o good_n unto_o the_o poor_a and_o for_o the_o rest_n make_v a_o proclamation_n that_o whosoever_o have_v any_o wrong_n at_o his_o hand_n he_o shall_v come_v and_o receive_v four_o time_n recompense_v for_o it_o and_o so_o vanity_n as_o worldly_a honour_n glory_n riches_n and_o all_o fleshly_a and_o carnal_a comfort_n and_o contentment_n which_o be_v nothing_o but_o vanity_n and_o the_o capital_a enemy_n of_o our_o soul_n o_o you_o son_n of_o man_n say_v david_n psal_n 4._o why_o love_v you_o vanity_n and_o seek_v after_o lie_n also_o will_v you_o have_v the_o lamentation_n of_o such_o unfortunate_a man_n as_o weary_v ourselves_o in_o the_o way_n of_o wickedness_n and_o
destruction_n yea_o we_o have_v go_v through_o tedious_a desert_n but_o as_o for_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n we_o have_v not_o regard_v it_o what_o good_a have_v pride_n bring_v we_o or_o what_o profit_n have_v the_o pomp_n of_o riches_n bring_v us._n all_o these_o be_v pass_v away_o like_o a_o shadow_n and_o as_o a_o post_n that_o pass_v by_o and_o we_o be_v consume_v in_o our_o own_o iniquity_n this_o be_v the_o lamentable_a complaint_n of_o such_o man_n as_o run_v amiss_o and_o follow_v a_o wrong_a course_n in_o their_o action_n of_o this_o life_n these_o be_v they_o which_o pursue_v riches_n honour_n pomp_n and_o such_o like_a vanity_n and_o forget_v that_o great_a and_o weighty_a business_n for_o which_o they_o be_v send_v these_o be_v they_o who_o be_v esteem_v happy_a man_n in_o this_o world_n and_o think_v to_o run_v to_o a_o most_o fortunate_a course_n in_o that_o they_o heap_v up_o much_o riches_n together_o and_o advance_v themselves_o and_o their_o posterity_n and_o family_n to_o great_a dignity_n and_o so_o become_v gorgeous_a glorious_a and_o dreadful_a to_o other_o and_o final_o obtain_v whatsoever_o their_o lust_n and_o concupiscence_n desire_v this_o make_v they_o seem_v bless_v to_o the_o worldly_a thought_n and_o the_o way_n they_o run_v to_o be_v most_o prosperous_a and_o happy_a but_o the_o scripture_n of_o god_n be_v whole_o and_o manifest_a against_o such_o and_o thunder_v many_o woe_n and_o curse_n against_o they_o for_o why_o have_v god_n give_v reason_n and_o understanding_n unto_o man_n but_o to_o serve_v he_o and_o praise_v he_o upon_o earth_n therefore_o so_o soon_o as_o we_o come_v to_o year_n of_o discretion_n and_o begin_v to_o understand_v we_o shall_v then_o begin_v a_o new_a life_n and_o serve_v he_o who_o all_o creature_n do_v serve_v with_o we_o or_o else_o our_o understanding_n be_v vain_a now_o therefore_o because_o the_o militant_a church_n here_o upon_o earth_n be_v but_o pilgrim_n and_o stranger_n not_o have_v here_o in_o this_o worldly_a wilderness_n any_o certain_a place_n of_o abode_n but_o travail_v for_o one_o eternal_a in_o heaven_n and_o have_v daily_o many_o enemy_n to_o encounter_v withal_o therefore_o it_o stand_v every_o child_n of_o god_n upon_o and_o those_o that_o love_v their_o own_o salvation_n to_o have_v a_o due_a regard_n and_o a_o true_a examination_n of_o their_o life_n and_o conversation_n lest_o they_o be_v draw_v away_o from_o their_o true_a service_n and_o obedience_n which_o they_o owe_v unto_o their_o god_n and_o creator_n and_o so_o follow_v the_o enticement_n of_o their_o enemy_n to_o be_v draw_v away_o from_o god_n now_o that_o we_o may_v the_o better_a void_a the_o danger_n of_o our_o enemy_n we_o be_v to_o distinguish_v true_o between_o spiritual_a carefulness_n and_o worldly_a carefulness_n and_o how_o can_v we_o have_v a_o true_a judge_n for_o the_o trial_n thereof_o than_o our_o saviour_n christ_n himself_o who_o have_v deciphr_v it_o in_o the_o story_n of_o martha_n and_o mary_n for_o when_o our_o saviour_n christ_n enter_v into_o the_o village_n where_o martha_n and_o mary_n dwell_v and_o so_o into_o the_o house_n than_o they_o show_v their_o thankful_a mind_n to_o christ_n again_o the_o one_o by_o receive_v he_o into_o her_o house_n and_o the_o other_o by_o entertain_v he_o into_o her_o heart_n as_o he_o be_v god_n he_o be_v receive_v of_o mary_n and_o as_o he_o be_v man_n he_o be_v receive_v of_o martha_n but_o mary_n make_v choice_n of_o the_o better_a part_n and_o be_v prefer_v before_o her_o sister_n and_o although_o the_o care_n of_o martha_n in_o entertain_v of_o christ_n be_v not_o to_o be_v mislike_v yet_o maryes_fw-mi diligence_n in_o hear_v his_o doctrine_n be_v of_o purpose_n prefer_v to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v much_o better_a with_o mary_n to_o study_v in_o the_o word_n and_o so_o first_o to_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n then_o with_o martha_n to_o labour_v in_o the_o world_n and_o so_o to_o neglect_v that_o heavenly_a kingdom_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o such_o be_v the_o corruption_n of_o this_o rusty_a age_n that_o our_o great_a care_n be_v to_o provide_v for_o this_o present_a life_n as_o the_o scotfree_a man_n in_o luke_n the_o twelve_o enlarge_v his_o barn_n wherein_o to_o put_v his_o store_n for_o many_o year_n but_o we_o never_o or_o very_o late_a remember_v to_o provide_v for_o the_o life_n to_o come_v like_o that_o other_o rich_a man_n in_o luke_n 16._o that_o never_o think_v of_o heaven_n till_o he_o be_v torment_v in_o hell_n these_o sister_n be_v godly_a woman_n and_o both_o earnest_a favourer_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o yet_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o devotion_n there_o be_v such_o difference_n that_o the_o worldly_a affection_n of_o the_o one_o may_v in_o some_o sort_n be_v mislike_v in_o respect_n of_o the_o godly_a exercise_n and_o practice_v of_o the_o other_o martha_n be_v fore_o incomber_v with_o much_o serve_v but_o mary_n be_v at_o tentive_a to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o cost_n or_o trouble_v if_o they_o can_v hear_v the_o word_n preach_v without_o some_o hindrance_n to_o their_o worldly_a business_n and_o some_o extraordinary_a charge_n to_o their_o purse_n then_o like_o the_o gadarinites_n they_o be_v content_a to_o take_v their_o leave_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o word_n and_o have_v rather_o loose_v that_o heavenly_a pearl_n than_o they_o will_v part_v from_o their_o worldly_a pelf_n but_o let_v christian_n learn_v first_o to_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o his_o righteousness_n and_o then_o to_o provide_v for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n now_o while_o mary_n be_v careful_a for_o the_o food_n of_o the_o soul_n martha_n be_v curious_a to_o provide_v food_n for_o the_o body_n her_o great_a care_n be_v to_o entertain_v christ_n and_o to_o make_v he_o good_a cheer_n to_o testisie_n her_o thankful_a mind_n unto_o he_o that_o have_v raise_v her_o brother_n lazarus_n from_o death_n to_o life_n therefore_o he_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v well_o entertain_v it_o be_v well_o do_v therefore_o of_o martha_n to_o show_v her_o thankful_a mind_n unto_o christ_n but_o it_o be_v not_o well_o do_v at_o that_o time_n to_o show_v herself_o thankful_a in_o that_o manner_n for_o she_o be_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n for_o at_o that_o time_n christ_n preach_v the_o word_n it_o be_v then_o no_o time_n for_o she_o to_o spend_v in_o other_o affair_n and_o to_o neglect_v the_o great_a affair_n which_o be_v the_o mean_n of_o our_o salvation_n there_o be_v a_o time_n wherein_o we_o ought_v to_o labour_v in_o our_o vocation_n and_o a_o time_n wherein_o we_o ought_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o as_o we_o may_v not_o utter_o neglect_v our_o lawful_a calling_n to_o follow_v sermon_n so_o must_v we_o not_o bestow_v the_o sabaoth_n which_o be_v consecrate_v to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o follow_v the_o work_n of_o our_o vocation_n all_o thing_n have_v their_o appoint_a time_n say_v the_o wise_a man_n eccle._n 3._o and_o every_o thing_n be_v seemly_a in_o his_o convenient_a season_n but_o when_o thing_n be_v do_v preposterous_o and_o out_o of_o order_n there_o follow_v confusion_n although_o martha_n do_v not_o hear_v christ_n yet_o she_o do_v labour_n for_o christ_n many_o in_o these_o day_n will_v neither_o labour_n for_o christ_n nor_o hear_v christ_n but_o as_o the_o israelite_n be_v weary_a of_o their_o journey_n in_o the_o wilderness_n and_o loathe_v that_o heavenly_a manna_n so_o these_o man_n be_v weary_a of_o every_o godly_a exercise_n and_o be_v cloy_v with_o the_o word_n of_o god_n yet_o behold_v how_o our_o saviour_n christ_n reprove_v martha_n and_o excuse_v mary_n for_o when_o martha_n complain_v of_o her_o sister_n to_o christ_n that_o she_o will_v not_o help_v she_o and_o seem_v after_o a_o sort_n to_o blame_v our_o saviour_n for_o wink_v at_o it_o require_v he_o to_o see_v the_o matter_n amend_v but_o christ_n reprove_v martha_n curiosity_n and_o then_o excuse_v yea_o commend_v maryes_fw-mi care_n say_v unto_o she_o martha_n martha_n thou_o care_v and_o be_v trouble_v about_o many_o thing_n but_o one_o thing_n be_v needful_a mary_n have_v choose_v the_o better_a part_n which_o shall_v not_o be_v take_v from_o she_o one_o thing_n be_v necessary_a say_v christ_n and_o what_o be_v that_o one_o thing_n even_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n preach_v which_o be_v the_o power_n of_o god_n to_o salvation_n to_o every_o one_o that_o believe_v a_o man_n may_v better_o want_v all_o thing_n than_o that_o one_o needful_a thing_n and_o yet_o we_o desire_v all_o other_o thing_n and_o neglect_v that_o one_o thing_n which_o be_v so_o needful_a this_o one_o thing_n have_v mary_n choose_v and_o therefore_o have_v choose_v the_o better_a part_n martha_n part_n
