elsewhere_o if_o at_o all_o when_o apply_v to_o the_o faithful_a servant_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v here_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o amaze_a notion_n and_o worthy_a to_o be_v consider_v for_o the_o sense_n of_o it_o and_o the_o reason_n why_o it_o be_v use_v the_o sense_n of_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v take_v in_o the_o ordinary_a rigour_n of_o the_o phrase_n negative_o as_o we_o use_v it_o among_o man_n for_o a_o act_n do_v either_o according_a to_o the_o extremity_n of_o the_o desert_n of_o a_o fault_n or_o with_o a_o mind_n possess_v with_o malice_n or_o hatred_n against_o the_o the_o smart_n of_o it_o we_o shall_v not_o at_o all_o be_v apprehensive_a of_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n and_o his_o detestation_n of_o sin_n if_o he_o do_v not_o take_v vengeance_n upon_o some_o transgrestion_n in_o some_o person_n and_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n that_o we_o be_v but_o little_a apprehensive_a of_o it_o when_o we_o feel_v no_o token_n of_o his_o displeasure_n against_o his_o majesty_n it_o be_v most_o just_a that_o they_o shall_v be_v so_o deal_v with_o as_o it_o may_v appear_v to_o they_o and_o all_o man_n that_o god_n be_v not_o one_o fit_a to_o be_v abuse_v any_o way_n and_o that_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n and_o mercy_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v esteem_v a_o encouragement_n to_o any_o to_o set_v light_n by_o his_o authority_n and_o sovereignty_n again_o if_o they_o misbehave_v themselves_o one_o to_o another_o it_o be_v most_o just_a that_o god_n shall_v distribute_v justice_n among_o they_o so_o far_o as_o to_o discountenance_v the_o wrong_a doer_n and_o make_v he_o afraid_a of_o do_v the_o like_a again_o that_o god_n shall_v so_o set_v they_o to_o right_n when_o they_o be_v quarrel_v one_o with_o another_o or_o abuse_v one_o another_o as_o that_o it_o may_v appear_v he_o give_v they_o no_o such_o leave_n and_o that_o his_o law_n to_o the_o contrary_a be_v not_o give_v in_o vain_a father_n only_o in_o all_o this_o we_o be_v to_o remember_v that_o the_o justice_n we_o be_v now_o speak_v of_o be_v not_o the_o justice_n of_o a_o judge_n that_o look_v bare_o to_o the_o rigour_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o desert_n of_o the_o offence_n but_o the_o justice_n of_o a_o father_n who_o though_o he_o scourge_v and_o correct_v his_o child_n even_o to_o blood_n sometime_o for_o untowardness_n relate_v to_o himself_o or_o to_o any_o of_o the_o family_n or_o even_a stranger_n yet_o he_o do_v it_o not_o to_o satisfy_v his_o own_o spleen_n nor_o in_o malice_n against_o his_o child_n but_o to_o make_v he_o sensible_a of_o his_o fault_n and_o careful_a to_o amend_v and_o to_o show_v himself_o in_o his_o paternal_a authority_n right_o dispense_v favour_n and_o correction_n according_a to_o the_o behaviour_n of_o every_o one_o of_o and_o under_o his_o mighty_a hand_n for_o these_o thing_n 3._o army_n three_o we_o have_v yet_o the_o consideration_n of_o our_o army_n to_o be_v affect_v with_o the_o sin_n of_o our_o army_n do_v in_o a_o special_a manner_n call_v we_o to_o humiliation_n and_o we_o ourselves_o do_v in_o effect_n profess_v and_o proclaim_v so_o much_o our_o assemble_v together_o this_o day_n and_o join_v in_o prayer_n and_o fast_v and_o so_o in_o humiliation_n at_o least_o in_o pretence_n be_v special_o to_o obtain_v a_o blessing_n upon_o that_o army_n which_o be_v command_v by_o his_o excellency_n our_o noble_a lord_n general_n this_o be_v well_o but_o if_o we_o mean_v to_o get_v good_a by_o it_o to_o prevail_v with_o god_n for_o they_o and_o in_o they_o for_o ourselves_o we_o must_v lament_v and_o be_v humble_v for_o their_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o our_o own_o and_o so_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o out_o other_o army_n observe_v the_o record_n of_o god_n providence_n in_o his_o sacred_a word_n the_o epitome_n of_o all_o his_o providence_n throughout_o all_o age_n b._n and_o you_o ever_o shall_v find_v that_o where_o there_o be_v no_o special_a sin_n in_o the_o army_n of_o his_o people_n or_o in_o those_o that_o send_v they_o forth_o there_o they_o ever_o prevail_v and_o never_o be_v they_o foil_v but_o you_o shall_v readâ—_z either_o before_o hand_n or_o short_o after_o the_o mention_n of_o the_o defeat_n the_o sin_n that_o so_o provoke_v god_n to_o take_v vengeance_n therefore_o as_o we_o fear_v any_o overthrow_n and_o pray_v against_o it_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v both_o our_o own_o own_o honour_n and_o advantage_n that_o they_o that_o fight_v for_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o nation_n shall_v commit_v so_o many_o outrage_n and_o practice_v such_o rapine_n and_o spoil_n as_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a many_o of_o they_o do_v and_o it_o be_v say_v sin_n there_o be_v little_a difference_n between_o their_o plunder_n and_o the_o enemy_n who_o all_o cry_n out_o upon_o as_o very_o barbarous_a that_o among_o those_o who_o pretend_v to_o have_v take_v arm_n to_o defend_v religion_n and_o the_o gospel_n there_o shall_v be_v a_o loud_a noise_n of_o their_o swear_n and_o drunkenness_n and_o profaneness_n of_o whoredom_n and_o of_o do_v injury_n to_o our_o own_o friend_n and_o special_o to_o those_o that_o be_v great_a friend_n and_o best_a affect_a to_o the_o gospel_n and_o religion_n as_o if_o they_o be_v gage_v to_o fight_v against_o it_o and_o to_o eat_v they_o up_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o as_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o certain_a than_o that_o they_o be_v too_o too_o common_a in_o our_o army_n if_o our_o army_n go_v forth_o and_o manage_v the_o war_n as_o there_o be_v too_o evident_a sign_n of_o it_o with_o very_a much_o carnal_a confidence_n in_o themselves_o and_o their_o strength_n and_o worldly_a advantage_n the_o common_a fault_n of_o we_o all_o in_o a_o great_a measure_n and_o if_o there_o be_v among_o they_o man_n that_o desire_v and_o design_n to_o prolong_v our_o trouble_n and_o lengthen_v out_o the_o war_n that_o they_o may_v make_v the_o better_a purchase_n of_o their_o employment_n and_o charge_n of_o which_o there_o be_v but_o that_o do_v most_o displease_v we_o in_o other_o man_n in_o the_o generality_n perhaps_o god_n but_o how_o little_a do_v we_o take_v notice_n of_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n when_o we_o be_v alone_o solemn_o profess_v our_o business_n to_o be_v humiliation_n even_o for_o other_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o our_o own_o and_o when_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n bemoan_v they_o in_o their_o confession_n and_o prayer_n and_o set_v out_o the_o aggravation_n of_o they_o how_o few_o heart_n join_v affectionate_o with_o they_o and_o how_o little_a do_v we_o usual_o tremble_v at_o the_o hear_n of_o they_o even_o when_o in_o the_o sermon_n preach_v on_o these_o day_n though_o seldom_o sufficient_o point_v this_o way_n we_o have_v any_o catalogue_n breefer_v or_o large_a of_o national_a wickedness_n holy_a fear_n and_o amaze_a tremble_a that_o we_o can_v apply_v in_o proportion_n that_o speech_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o ourselves_o luk._n 23._o weep_v for_o yourselves_o and_o for_o your_o child_n for_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v do_v in_o the_o green_a tree_n what_o shall_v be_v do_v in_o the_o dry_a if_o moses_n aaron_n and_o samuel_n escape_v not_o but_o god_n take_v vengeance_n on_o their_o invention_n notwithstanding_o his_o grace_n in_o answer_v and_o pardon_v they_o how_o shall_v we_o or_o our_o people_n escape_v let_v we_o therefore_o all_o lay_v our_o hand_n on_o our_o heart_n and_o say_v at_o once_o the_o lord_n be_v righteous_a in_o all_o that_o he_o have_v do_v or_o threaten_v to_o do_v to_o we_o and_o withal_o that_o it_o be_v of_o the_o lord_n mercy_n that_o we_o be_v note_v consume_v because_o his_o compassion_n fail_v not_o as_o the_o prophet_n teach_v the_o church_n to_o say_v in_o the_o book_n of_o lamentation_n and_o this_o will_v prepare_v we_o for_o a_o wise_a consideration_n of_o what_o we_o be_v far_a to_o do_v upon_o these_o ground_n to_o which_o the_o second_o use_n namely_o of_o exhortation_n tend_v to_o which_o now_o i_o come_v the_o exhortation_n thing_n proceed_v again_o upon_o the_o ground_n of_o all_o the_o three_o doctrine_n forementioned_a and_o the_o humiliation_n insist_v upon_o in_o the_o former_a use_n together_o for_o if_o we_o be_v all_o so_o prone_a to_o sin_n even_o though_o we_o have_v some_o faithfulness_n and_o if_o god_n be_v so_o gracious_a and_o yet_o so_o severe_a towards_o his_o faithful_a one_o of_o all_o which_o our_o own_o and_o our_o nation_n experience_n at_o this_o day_n have_v force_v we_o to_o this_o day_n outward_a humiliation_n and_o call_v we_o to_o be_v deep_o humble_v in_o our_o inward_a spirit_n both_o this_o day_n and_o hereafter_o then_o certain_o we_o be_v all_o to_o be_v most_o earnest_o exhort_v to_o be_v more_o watchful_a and_o resolute_a then_o ever_o to_o keep_v close_o to_o god_n and_o to_o be_v in_o all_o thing_n constant_o
