a_o plain_a difference_n for_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v ever_o full_a of_o himself_o but_o a_o true_a christian_a do_v all_o in_o faith_n he_o seek_v god_n daily_a and_o wait_v upon_o god_n daily_o and_o these_o be_v not_o the_o way_n of_o hypocrite_n answ_n consider_v i_o pray_v you_o what_o the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n hold_v forth_o as_o the_o root_n of_o this_o sanctification_n and_o i_o will_v go_v no_o further_o than_o express_a scripture_n isa_n 58.2_o they_o seek_v i_o daily_o and_o this_o be_v speak_v of_o hypocritical_a israelite_n and_o for_o wait_v we_o often_o hear_v it_o speak_v difference_n true_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o perceive_v when_o man_n differ_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o a_o easy_a matter_n to_o make_v such_o use_n of_o sanctification_n as_o by_o it_o to_o bear_v witness_n unto_o justification_n and_o it_o will_v be_v a_o very_a hard_a case_n and_o much_o more_o difficult_a when_o man_n can_v feel_v the_o presence_n of_o spiritual_a gift_n but_o want_v spiritual_a light_n and_o when_o they_o do_v find_v faith_n in_o themselves_o they_o do_v find_v it_o in_o hypocrite_n also_o even_o in_o hypocrite_n also_o even_o faith_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n &_o faith_n to_o wait_v upon_o he_o and_o faith_n to_o apply_v he_o say_v my_o god_n and_o faith_n to_o stay_v upon_o the_o god_n of_o israel_n and_o yet_o these_o man_n do_v vanish_v away_o in_o hypocrisy_n this_o hypocrite_n may_v do_v see_v therefore_o what_o easiness_n of_o error_n may_v befall_v christian_n whether_o this_o or_o that_o grace_n be_v of_o the_o right_a stamp_n or_o no_o it_o will_v behoove_v christian_n to_o be_v wary_a for_o even_o eagle-eyed_a christian_n will_v have_v much_o ado_n so_o to_o discern_v of_o sanctification_n in_o themselves_o before_o they_o see_v their_o justification_n as_o to_o cut_v off_o all_o hypocrite_n from_o have_v the_o like_a in_o they_o for_o the_o sanctify_a frame_n of_o god_n child_n and_o that_o which_o seem_v to_o be_v like_o it_o in_o hypocrite_n both_o of_o they_o spring_n from_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o both_o from_o faith_n but_o now_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v further_a work_n in_o his_o own_o people_n beyond_o what_o he_o work_v upon_o other_o though_o he_o melt_v both_o yet_o hypocrite_n be_v melt_v as_o iron_n which_o will_v return_v again_o to_o his_o former_a hardness_n but_o his_o own_o people_n be_v melt_v into_o flesh_n which_o will_v never_o return_v to_o his_o hardness_n more_o neither_o can_v they_o rest_v in_o any_o measure_n of_o softness_n unto_o which_o they_o have_v attain_v but_o still_o be_v carry_v towards_o jesus_n christ_n so_o that_o the_o one_o be_v a_o temporary_a faith_n and_o the_o other_o persever_v though_o both_o work_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n yet_o this_o difference_n will_v be_v find_v between_o they_o not_o only_a when_o hypocrite_n come_v to_o be_v blast_v but_o even_o in_o the_o midden_a of_o their_o profession_n as_o for_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v never_o precedent_n of_o its_o own_o power_n but_o his_o strength_n lie_v out_o of_o himself_o in_o christ_n whereas_o hypocrite_n and_o legal_a christian_n be_v confident_a of_o their_o faith_n that_o they_o can_v make_v use_n of_o it_o unto_o such_o and_o such_o end_n they_o think_v they_o need_v no_o more_o but_o look_v up_o to_o christ_n and_o their_o work_n be_v at_o a_o end_n and_o such_o strength_n they_o find_v in_o themselves_o as_o that_o they_o do_v not_o fear_v but_o that_o they_o shall_v carry_v a_o end_n all_o their_o work_n to_o god_n glory_n and_o their_o own_o whereas_o the_o strong_a faith_n even_o of_o the_o thessalonian_o who_o faith_n be_v such_o as_o none_o of_o all_o the_o church_n go_v before_o they_o if_o it_o be_v not_o supply_v and_o strengthen_v they_o know_v &_o the_o apostle_n paul_n know_v that_o it_o will_v warp_v &_o shrink_v this_o may_v we_o see_v by_o compare_v 1_o thes_n 1.3_o with_o chap._n 3.2,10_o and_o the_o faithful_a people_n of_o god_n isa_n 26.12_o acknowledge_v he_o to_o work_v all_o their_o work_n for_o they_o and_o therefore_o as_o there_o be_v a_o real_a difference_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o also_o in_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n in_o hypocrite_n and_o the_o child_n of_o god_n for_o the_o one_o put_v confidence_n in_o himself_o in_o the_o gift_n receive_v and_o the_o other_o in_o jehovah_n this_o be_v the_o first_o difference_n of_o sanctification_n 2._o there_o be_v difference_n also_o in_o the_o rule_n whereby_o they_o be_v guide_v though_o both_o seek_v to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n &_o take_v delight_n in_o that_o insomuch_o as_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o difference_n they_o there_o yet_o a_o great_a difference_n there_o be_v in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o word_n the_o one_o be_v so_o confident_a of_o the_o comfort_n that_o he_o have_v in_o the_o word_n and_o he_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o true_a heart_a christian_n be_v subject_a unto_o so_o a_o poor_a christian_a be_v discourage_v &_o a_o hypocrite_n embolden_v see_v himself_o more_o sanctify_v than_o the_o other_o in_o view_n prop._n true_a sanctification_n unless_o there_o be_v faith_n whereby_o the_o person_n be_v accept_v and_o whereby_o life_n be_v receive_v to_o act_v in_o all_o sanctification_n so_o there_o can_v be_v no_o through_o fear_n and_o so_o all_o those_o melt_v that_o want_n not_o depth_n of_o earth_n as_o the_o thorny_a soil_n do_v not_o but_o mind_v you_o they_o will_v grow_v hard_o again_o as_o iron_n or_o lead_n will_v do_v after_o it_o be_v melt_v now_o look_v at_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n when_o he_o come_v to_o work_v effectual_o and_o he_o do_v not_o only_o melt_v the_o heart_n but_o take_v away_o they_o and_o the_o blessing_n in_o they_o if_o you_o shall_v say_v we_o have_v be_v convert_v and_o have_v have_v gracious_a change_n wrought_v in_o we_o be_v not_o deceive_v such_o work_n may_v reach_v no_o far_o than_o conviction_n and_o you_o may_v come_v to_o turn_v your_o back_n upon_o jesus_n christ_n consider_v therefore_o do_v ever_o the_o lord_n give_v himself_o to_o be_v one_o so_o far_o as_o christ_n be_v in_o i_o and_o therefore_o i_o come_v unto_o god_n in_o prayer_n to_o make_v good_a those_o promise_n unto_o i_o in_o a_o right_a way_n which_o will_v have_v be_v preposterous_o apply_v before_o christ_n be_v give_v and_o this_o may_v serve_v for_o answer_n to_o the_o 5_o question_n quest_n 6._o we_o come_v now_o unto_o a_o sixth_o question_n if_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v himself_o first_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o his_o grace_n this_o may_v then_o be_v a_o doubt_n and_o a_o question_n in_o a_o christian_a soul_n if_o god_n give_v himself_o before_o any_o blessing_n before_o any_o promise_n in_o order_n of_o nature_n though_o he_o give_v himself_o always_o in_o a_o promise_n if_o we_o can_v claim_v any_o blessing_n from_o god_n at_o the_o first_o in_o any_o conditional_a promise_n therefore_o not_o by_o any_o condition_n in_o ourselves_o but_o as_o we_o receive_v all_o thing_n from_o god_n so_o we_o claim_v all_o thing_n from_o he_o in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o do_v first_o seek_v for_o he_o and_o for_o all_o thing_n in_o he_o if_o thus_o to_o what_o use_n then_o serve_v the_o law_n of_o god_n which_o require_v such_o and_o such_o condition_n in_o we_o do_v we_o not_o abrogate_v the_o law_n &_o make_v it_o of_o none_o effect_n and_o root_v it_o out_o from_o have_v any_o power_n over_o christian_n and_o true_o some_o under_o pretence_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n have_v think_v it_o altogether_o bootless_a to_o bind_v christian_n unto_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o to_o look_v at_o it_o as_o any_o part_n of_o the_o use_n serve_v the_o law_n of_o god_n if_o god_n give_v himself_o first_o unto_o his_o people_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o his_o grace_n answ_n though_o the_o lord_n give_v himself_o free_o to_o the_o soul_n and_o his_o son_n and_o all_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n without_o respect_n unto_o any_o work_n of_o the_o law_n yet_o the_o law_n be_v of_o special_a and_o notable_a use_n unto_o all_o the_o son_n of_o man_n both_o unto_o they_o that_o be_v not_o yet_o bring_v home_o unto_o god_n by_o convert_v grace_n and_o also_o to_o those_o that_o be_v regenerate_v in_o jesus_n christ_n the_o apostle_n paul_n do_v observe_v that_o the_o question_n will_v arise_v upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n gal._n 3.16,17,18_o for_o if_o the_o blessing_n of_o abraham_n come_v upon_o the_o people_n of_o god_n by_o jesus_n christ_n to_o what_o end_n then_o serve_v the_o law_n which_o come_v 430_o year_n after_o it_o can_v disannul_v grace_n to_o make_v will_v in_o the_o end_n final_o perish_v and_o the_o law_n be_v yet_o of_o use_n unto_o both_o sort_n of_o they_o for_o the_o elect_n it_o be_v of_o use_n unto_o they_o to_o aggravate_v their_o sin_n and_o to_o multiply_v it_o unto_o they_o as_o it_o be_v that_o be_v to_o say_v to_o aggravate_v the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o heinousness_n of_o sin_n upon_o their_o conscience_n and_o to_o set_v home_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n unto_o their_o soul_n thereby_o to_o drive_v they_o to_o feel_v their_o great_a need_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n who_o otherwise_o they_o shall_v for_o ever_o have_v despise_v thus_o the_o apostle_n answer_v in_o the_o place_n aforenamed_a the_o law_n be_v add_v because_o of_o transgression_n that_o they_o may_v clear_o appear_v and_o be_v aggravate_v himself_o and_o unworthines_n to_o be_v redeem_v from_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n now_o be_v the_o soul_n fit_v to_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o be_v the_o news_n of_o christ_n beautiful_a and_o glad_a tiding_n and_o of_o this_o use_n be_v the_o law_n unto_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n before_o they_o come_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n 2._o but_o of_o what_o use_n be_v the_o law_n unto_o other_o man_n first_o the_o disobedience_n of_o it_o be_v of_o use_n second_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o 1._o the_o disobedience_n for_o if_o man_n have_v not_o know_v sin_n it_o have_v be_v some_o pretence_n though_o they_o have_v commit_v sin_n but_o when_o man_n have_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o law_n and_o yet_o commit_v sin_n willing_o now_o they_o we_o make_v void_a the_o law_n through_o faith_n god_n forbid_v yea_o we_o establish_v the_o law_n for_o what_o need_n have_v christian_n of_o free_a justification_n by_o christ_n if_o they_o be_v not_o bind_v unto_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o law_n by_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o the_o free_a justification_n of_o man_n under_o a_o free_a covenant_n of_o grace_n do_v make_v many_o complaint_n which_o do_v all_o of_o they_o spring_n from_o the_o conscience_n of_o the_o disobedience_n of_o the_o law_n which_o god_n have_v frame_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o servant_n whereby_o they_o reflect_v upon_o their_o sin_n as_o the_o ground_n of_o all_o the_o distemper_n which_o lie_v upon_o their_o body_n or_o mind_n this_o be_v the_o first_o effect_n of_o the_o subjection_n of_o god_n people_n to_o his_o law_n they_o lie_v under_o the_o faith_n and_o sense_n of_o the_o danger_n of_o the_o disobedience_n of_o it_o 2_o they_o be_v under_o the_o faith_n and_o sense_n also_o of_o god_n gracious_a acceptance_n of_o their_o way_n when_o they_o be_v suitable_a to_o the_o bless_a direction_n of_o his_o word_n not_o that_o they_o can_v raise_v therefrom_o their_o justify_v estate_n but_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n of_o god_n whereby_o they_o be_v help_v to_o obey_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n they_o do_v see_v the_o lord_n gracious_a approbation_n whatsoever_o we_o have_v to_o do_v in_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n that_o we_o shall_v soon_o be_v weary_a of_o reach_v forth_o our_o hand_n all_o the_o day_n long_o unto_o the_o lord_n and_o to_o be_v constant_o for_o god_n from_o god_n and_o with_o god_n in_o all_o our_o action_n our_o base_a spirit_n be_v soon_o ready_a to_o be_v withdraw_v from_o the_o lord_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n bid_v we_o follow_v after_o peace_n and_o holiness_n without_o which_o &c._n &c._n so_o that_o great_a be_v the_o necessity_n of_o holiness_n and_o worthy_a to_o be_v follow_v after_o for_o though_o a_o man_n own_o heart_n and_o the_o world_n and_o man_n and_o satan_n withdraw_v we_o from_o it_o yet_o follow_v after_o it_o for_o without_o it_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v god_n there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o holiness_n which_o some_o man_n have_v attain_v unto_o many_o a_o fair_a day_n ago_o but_o it_o be_v a_o thousand_o to_o one_o whether_o it_o be_v the_o holiness_n that_o do_v accompany_v salvation_n for_o that_o holiness_n be_v not_o easy_o attain_v unto_o but_o the_o other_o will_v easy_o cleave_v close_o unto_o a_o man_n now_o if_o you_o shall_v ask_v i_o quest_n wherefore_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o pursue_v after_o holiness_n and_o what_o need_v it_o if_o the_o spirit_n of_o holiness_n dwell_v in_o i_o by_o a_o everlasting_a covenant_n if_o it_o do_v withdraw_v from_o we_o as_o it_o do_v from_o adam_n it_o be_v another_o matter_n but_o though_o it_o may_v be_v quench_v in_o we_o yet_o it_o abide_v for_o ever_o what_o need_v then_o of_o gift_n of_o holiness_n answ_n of_o holiness_n be_v requifite_n to_o be_v in_o god_n people_n namely_o that_o they_o may_v become_v meet_a instrument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o fit_v unto_o every_o good_a word_n and_o work_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o to_o be_v fill_v with_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o righteousness_n and_o fruit_n of_o his_o spirit_n that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_a temple_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o dwell_v in_o and_o this_o be_v the_o principal_a reason_n of_o the_o point_n quest_n if_o then_o there_o be_v such_o gift_n of_o holiness_n what_o need_v the_o holy_a ghost_n dwell_v in_o we_o be_v it_o not_o enough_o that_o he_o shall_v shed_v abroad_o these_o thing_n into_o our_o heart_n can_v the_o lord_n carry_v a_o end_n the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n by_o these_o gift_n answ_n there_o be_v need_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v dwell_v in_o we_o notwithstanding_o 1._o to_o keep_v these_o gift_n in_o we_o 2._o to_o act_n they_o in_o we_o 3._o to_o witness_v unto_o our_o soul_n by_o these_o for_o our_o comfort_n and_o the_o good_a one_o of_o another_o some_o scripture_n for_o all_o these_o 1._o that_o there_o be_v need_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o he_o shall_v keep_v these_o in_o we_o 2_o tim._n 1.14_o there_o be_v a_o worthy_a thing_n commit_v unto_o we_o how_o shall_v we_o keep_v it_o not_o by_o our_o own_o wit_n or_o wisdom_n careful_a watchfullnes_n and_o faithfullnes_n though_o such_o thing_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v want_v but_o the_o charge_n be_v keep_v those_o thing_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o dwell_v in_o we_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o gift_n to_o be_v fit_a instrument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n to_o maintain_v that_o which_o god_n give_v we_o though_o adam_n gift_n be_v in_o perfection_n yet_o not_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v they_o for_o he_o they_o all_o fly_v from_o he_o as_o soon_o as_o ever_o he_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o forbid_a fruit_n and_o leave_v he_o naked_a and_o desperate_a therefore_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n the_o lord_n give_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v strong_a possession_n in_o his_o servant_n against_o the_o strong_a man_n arm_v 2._o it_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o act_v the_o gift_n give_v to_o we_o and_o enable_v they_o in_o we_o for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o keep_v possession_n do_v derive_v continue_v strength_n into_o our_o faith_n which_o put_v life_n into_o all_o
of_o god_n john_n 15.5_o and_o the_o apostle_n paul_n can_v only_o not_o do_v any_o great_a matter_n by_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o grace_n but_o nothing_o at_o all_o without_o jesus_n christ_n god_n where_o he_o put_v it_o into_o his_o own_o experience_n why_o do_v not_o he_o live_v by_o love_n and_o patience_n and_o zeal_n etc._n etc._n yes_o true_o they_o be_v lively_a in_o he_o if_o ever_o in_o any_o man_n beside_o our_o bless_a saviour_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o never_o attribute_v life_n to_o any_o of_o these_o gift_n of_o he_o but_o if_o he_o speak_v of_o life_n he_o make_v this_o his_o universal_a life_n i_o live_v by_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o i_o be_o able_a to_o do_v all_o thing_n through_o christ_n which_o strengthen_v i_o phi._n 4.13_o to_o trust_v upon_o those_o grace_n of_o god_n wherein_o they_o have_v most_o abound_v that_o they_o have_v principal_o fail_v therein_o but_o this_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o if_o they_o have_v it_o may_v seem_v too_o great_a a_o bondage_n and_o slavery_n both_o for_o any_o church_n whether_o presbyter_n or_o congregationall_a to_o be_v force_v to_o receive_v all_o into_o fellowship_n in_o
