as_o those_o that_o walk_v in_o a_o garden_n of_o fragrant_a flower_n if_o one_o may_v have_v leave_n general_o he_o take_v some_o along_o with_o he_o to_o smell_v to_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o day_n do_v thou_o bind_v up_o some_o spiritual_a truth_n out_o of_o thy_o meditation_n and_o do_v likewise_o last_o adv._n the_o last_o great_a advice_n and_o that_o which_o must_v serve_v for_o a_o antidote_n lest_o all_o the_o other_o caution_n and_o advice_n be_v observe_v they_o shall_v be_v turn_v into_o poison_n to_o we_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v often_o meditate_v and_o never_o be_v satisfy_v in_o our_o soul_n until_o we_o come_v to_o a_o clear_a gospel_n experimental_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n without_o which_o indeed_o we_o be_v not_o worthy_a of_o the_o name_n of_o christian_n for_o be_v we_o not_o call_v christian_n from_o the_o very_a name_n and_o doubtless_o if_o we_o have_v not_o a_o right_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n we_o shall_v make_v up_o a_o christ_n to_o ourselves_o of_o our_o prayer_n and_o fast_n and_o alm_n and_o repentance_n and_o woe_n be_v to_o that_o soul_n that_o at_o the_o last_o day_n shall_v have_v nothing_o to_o trust_v to_o but_o his_o grace_n and_o duty_n which_o will_v accuse_v he_o in_o stead_n of_o plead_v his_o cause_n and_o two_o thing_n especial_o we_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o know_v of_o christ_n first_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o person_n and_o mystery_n of_o christ_n second_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n first_o for_o the_o excellency_n of_o his_o person_n though_o to_o say_v he_o be_v both_o god_n and_o man_n be_v indeed_o to_o include_v all_o yet_o some_o few_o thing_n i_o shall_v speak_v to_o manifest_v this_o point_n first_o that_o all_o his_o people_n do_v receive_v
from_o he_o grace_n for_o grace_n john_n 1._o 16._o now_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o vast_a emptiness_n and_o spiritual_a want_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n we_o must_v needs_o conclude_v that_o he_o must_v be_v a_o ocean_n of_o excellency_n that_o must_v continual_o supply_v they_o second_o for_o i_o shall_v be_v very_o brief_a set_v down_o rather_o head_n of_o meditation_n than_o sermon-wise_o to_o dilate_v upon_o they_o consider_v the_o dignity_n of_o his_o suffering_n for_o they_o do_v satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n and_o that_o can_v not_o be_v satisfy_v without_o something_o of_o infinite_a value_n nor_o can_v it_o have_v be_v do_v by_o he_o save_v only_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o dignity_n of_o his_o person_n three_o consider_v how_o he_o suffer_v though_o the_o pain_n he_o suffer_v be_v exceed_o great_a yet_o be_v it_o without_o any_o abatement_n at_o all_o of_o his_o love_n of_o and_o confidence_n in_o god_n for_o while_o he_o satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n by_o his_o passive_a obedience_n in_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n he_o also_o satisfy_v and_o fulfil_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n by_o his_o active_a obedience_n which_o be_v a_o wonder_n full_a thing_n that_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o his_o agony_n and_o all_o his_o father_n anger_n while_o he_o be_v lay_v upon_o he_o the_o punishment_n of_o the_o iniquity_n of_o we_o all_o and_o spare_v he_o not_o that_o even_o then_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o abatement_n at_o all_o of_o his_o confidence_n in_o and_o love_n of_o his_o father_n but_o that_o he_o shall_v love_v he_o and_o trust_v in_o he_o as_o much_o as_o at_o any_o other_o time_n for_o have_v there_o be_v any_o abatement_n and_o have_v he_o not_o love_v god_n then_o with_o all_o his_o soul_n with_o all_o his_o might_n and_o with_o all_o his_o strength_n and_o the_o same_o may_v be_v say_v of_o his_o trust_n in_o god_n his_o suffering_n can_v never_o have_v satisfy_v for_o sin_n but_o themselves_o have_v stand_v in_o need_n of_o forgiveness_n four_o consider_v that_o say_n of_o our_o saviour_n john_n 14._o 9_o he_o that_o have_v see_v i_o have_v see_v the_o father_n the_o speech_n of_o philip_n be_v as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v we_o indeed_o see_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o holiness_n and_o wisdom_n in_o thy_o word_n and_o action_n but_o will_v we_o can_v see_v the_o father_n sure_o there_o will_v be_v a_o world_n of_o holiness_n and_o wisdom_n in_o his_o word_n and_o action_n if_o he_o will_v have_v live_v among_o man_n as_o thou_o lord_n have_v do_v sure_o than_o it_o have_v suffice_v now_o our_o saviour_n answer_n be_v as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v to_o philip_n if_o the_o father_n himself_o have_v take_v human_a nature_n and_o live_v among_o man_n he_o will_v not_o have_v speak_v one_o word_n more_o or_o otherwise_o nor_o do_v one_o action_n more_o or_o otherwise_o then_o i_o have_v do_v he_o will_v not_o nay_o can_v not_o have_v speak_v or_o do_v which_o be_v neither_o possible_a nor_o lawful_a to_o be_v utter_v yet_o no_o man_n speak_v high_a thing_n of_o christ_n than_o he_o he_o desire_v to_o know_v nothing_o but_o jesus_n christ_n and_o he_o crucify_v account_v all_o other_o knowledge_n but_o dross_n and_o dog_n meat_n such_o knowledge_n as_o dog_n and_o swine_n reprobate_n may_v have_v nay_o one_o step_n further_o the_o very_a angel_n in_o heaven_n though_o they_o have_v the_o beatifical_a vision_n yet_o notwithstanding_o they_o desire_v to_o look_v into_o the_o great_a mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n 1_o pet._n 1._o 12._o therefore_o never_o think_v that_o thou_o have_v attain_v to_o any_o measure_n of_o christian_a knowledge_n before_o thou_o see_v a_o excellency_n in_o christ_n and_o a_o height_n and_o depth_n in_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o if_o thou_o shall_v not_o do_v say_v within_o thyself_o it_o be_v so_o evident_a that_o nothing_o be_v more_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o christ_n be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n and_o all_o the_o prophecy_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n that_o all_o the_o prophet_n nay_o all_o the_o angel_n give_v witness_v and_o the_o apostle_n clear_o say_v that_o there_o be_v no_o controversy_n of_o this_o matter_n of_o the_o greatness_n of_o gospel_n mystery_n and_o therefore_o that_o i_o do_v not_o admire_v they_o it_o certain_o proceed_v from_o my_o ignorance_n of_o they_o for_o if_o it_o proceed_v from_o knowledge_n without_o doubt_n the_o apostle_n that_o have_v more_o knowledge_n than_o i_o and_o the_o angel_n which_o have_v more_o knowledge_n than_o the_o apostle_n will_v never_o have_v desire_v to_o have_v know_v more_o of_o they_o and_o after_o thou_o have_v wrought_v this_o upon_o thy_o heart_n and_o be_v full_o convince_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o that_o there_o be_v no_o knowledge_n not_o only_o not_o so_o profitable_a but_o not_o so_o sweet_a nor_o so_o excellent_a as_o this_o then_o humble_o beseech_v the_o lord_n that_o he_o will_v show_v unto_o thou_o teach_v thou_o by_o his_o spirit_n the_o deep_a thing_n of_o god_n and_o that_o he_o will_v not_o only_o do_v it_o to_o inform_v and_o enlighten_v thy_o understanding_n in_o but_o to_o enamour_v thy_o will_n of_o the_o beauty_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o christ_n we_o stand_v dote_v and_o gaze_v upon_o hamane_a knowledge_n which_o be_v but_o like_o a_o poor_a glowworm_n compare_v to_o the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n but_o alas_o poor_a thing_n it_o have_v neither_o light_n nor_o heat_n compare_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o we_o must_v look_v upon_o christ_n as_o the_o only_a author_n and_o finisher_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o justifier_n of_o our_o person_n though_o we_o do_v all_o that_o have_v be_v mention_v yet_o we_o must_v not_o so_o much_o as_o make_v our_o do_n or_o not_o do_n the_o least_o ingredient_n in_o our_o justification_n and_o as_o solomon_n speak_v concerning_o our_o wisdom_n so_o we_o must_v do_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o holiness_n lean_a not_o to_o thy_o own_o wisdom_n say_v solomon_n not_o only_o not_o rely_v upon_o it_o but_o lean_a on_o it_o we_o must_v not_o partly_o trust_v in_o our_o own_o wisdom_n and_o partly_o in_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n but_o we_o must_v whole_o rely_v upon_o his_o wisdom_n so_o we_o must_v not_o partly_o rely_v upon_o christ_n merit_n and_o partly_o upon_o our_o own_o but_o whole_o on_o christ_n those_o sin_n which_o we_o do_v not_o commit_v we_o be_v not_o innocent_a of_o and_o those_o holy_a duty_n that_o we_o do_v perform_v we_o be_v not_o innocent_a in_o therefore_o neither_o can_v we_o escape_v hell_n nor_o attain_v heaven_n by_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o do_v or_o not_o do_v and_o the_o reason_n why_o we_o either_o avoid_v sin_n or_o perform_v holy_a duty_n or_o frequent_a ordinance_n be_v not_o because_o thereby_o we_o shall_v be_v justify_v but_o that_o thereby_o we_o may_v glorify_v god_n and_o christ_n and_o because_o therein_o we_o have_v communion_n with_o christ_n and_o be_v make_v more_o conformable_a unto_o he_o and_o make_v more_o capable_a of_o more_o of_o christ_n when_o we_o go_v to_o some_o stately_a palace_n where_o we_o have_v appoint_v to_o meet_v some_o dear_a friend_n who_o we_o love_v with_o our_o whole_a soul_n though_o we_o have_v never_o so_o much_o entertainment_n there_o when_o we_o come_v yet_o if_o we_o neither_o see_v nor_o enjoy_v the_o company_n of_o our_o so_o exceed_o love_v and_o desire_v friend_n we_o rather_o weep_v then_o rejoice_v notwithstanding_o the_o feast_n and_o building_n which_o we_o taste_v and_o see_v prayer_n hear_v the_o word_n the_o lord_n supper_n be_v stately_a ordinance_n and_o rich_a feast_n yet_o if_o we_o meet_v not_o christ_n there_o they_o be_v but_o dry_a breast_n and_o barren_a wilderness_n to_o a_o soul_n that_o love_v christ_n second_o now_o the_o main_a thing_n that_o hinder_v a_o poor_a soul_n from_o come_v unto_o christ_n be_v that_o it_o be_v not_o clear_o satisfy_v of_o christ_n love_n and_o willingness_n to_o receive_v she_o to_o this_o point_n therefore_o by_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n i_o shall_v speak_v more_o large_o and_o as_o clear_o as_o the_o lord_n shall_v enable_v i_o this_o therefore_o may_v be_v say_v to_o that_o point_n be_v thou_o not_o satisfy_v of_o the_o love_n and_o willingness_n of_o christ_n to_o receive_v thou_o what_o
