gladness_n but_o what_o god_n make_v he_o as_o indeed_o no_o other_o joy_n can_v make_v he_o true_o glad_a again_o but_o that_o which_o proceed_v from_o he_o that_o before_o make_v he_o sad_a in_o god_n if_o god_n herein_o will_v not_o be_v ready_a to_o yield_v to_o his_o child_n the_o measure_n of_o joy_n that_o the_o church_n crave_v from_o god_n be_v according_a to_o the_o day_n and_o year_n of_o their_o affliction_n a_o joy_n answerable_a and_o proportionable_a to_o their_o affliction_n that_o as_o god_n have_v a_o long_a time_n for_o many_o day_n and_o year_n afflict_v they_o so_o he_o will_v be_v please_v to_o send_v they_o answerable_a comfort_n whence_o by_o the_o way_n we_o may_v note_v 1._o that_o the_o special_a affliction_n and_o calamity_n of_o god_n church_n in_o the_o wilderness_n seem_v to_o be_v a_o occasion_n that_o move_v the_o prophet_n to_o pen_v this_o psalm_n concern_v the_o frailty_n and_o mortality_n of_o man_n in_o general_a teach_v we_o upon_o the_o like_a special_a occasion_n to_o meditate_v of_o this_o argument_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v no_o new_a thing_n that_o god_n shall_v humble_v and_o afflict_v his_o church_n not_o for_o a_o hour_n or_o a_o day_n and_o year_n to_o year_n wait_v the_o lord_n leisure_n for_o deliverance_n but_o the_o special_a point_n we_o be_v to_o note_n be_v this_o that_o the_o church_n in_o this_o do_v imply_v a_o argument_n to_o move_v the_o lord_n to_o make_v they_o glad_a yea_o to_o make_v they_o glad_a for_o a_o long_a time_n because_o they_o have_v for_o a_o long_a time_n be_v afflict_v as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v oh_o lord_n thou_o know_v how_o many_o day_n we_o have_v be_v afflict_v yea_o how_o many_o year_n we_o have_v see_v evil_a therefore_o according_o make_v we_o glad_a whence_o we_o learn_v that_o there_o be_v a_o proportion_n between_o the_o affliction_n and_o misery_n of_o god_n child_n and_o their_o comfort_n be_v they_o great_o afflict_v sure_o they_o shall_v have_v great_a gladness_n be_v they_o day_n month_n and_o year_n chastise_v they_o shall_v according_o rejoice_v yea_o the_o greatness_n of_o our_o affliction_n be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o bond_n and_o do_v tie_v the_o lord_n to_o make_v we_o glad_a so_o that_o we_o can_v use_v a_o more_o forcible_a reason_n then_o this_o to_o induce_v he_o thereunto_o and_o why_o sure_o because_o the_o lord_n be_v a_o most_o afflict_v she_o he_o propound_v to_o effect_v the_o hew_v square_n and_o saw_v of_o timber_n be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o carpenter_n but_o his_o special_a work_n indeed_o be_v the_o house_n that_o by_o mean_n thereof_o he_o work_v so_o the_o melt_a refine_n and_o polish_n of_o silver_n or_o gold_n be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o goldsmith_n but_o more_o especial_o the_o cup_n or_o boule_n that_o by_o that_o mean_v he_o frame_v hence_o we_o may_v learn_v 1._o that_o god_n many_o time_n hide_v the_o special_a end_n why_o he_o do_v afflict_v us._n he_o beat_v his_o church_n sometime_o for_o a_o long_a time_n together_o and_o the_o church_n neither_o can_v tell_v the_o special_a cause_n why_o nor_o what_o will_v be_v the_o issue_n or_o consequent_a of_o it_o ordinary_o parent_n never_o correct_v their_o child_n but_o beforehand_o they_o acquaint_v they_o with_o the_o particular_a fault_n and_o the_o child_n can_v guess_v at_o the_o end_n that_o his_o father_n aim_v at_o so_o do_v god_n many_o time_n and_o his_o child_n also_o can_v see_v in_o the_o very_a rod_n of_o god_n their_o fault_n and_o what_o god_n aim_v at_o in_o the_o same_o but_o sometime_o they_o can_v for_o their_o life_n for_o a_o long_a time_n though_o at_o length_n they_o shall_v see_v it_o god_n put_v they_o oft_o into_o the_o fire_n he_o hammer_v they_o oft_o over_o and_o over_o again_o but_o what_o piece_n of_o work_n the_o lord_n will_v make_v of_o they_o they_o no_o more_o know_v sometime_o then_o the_o iron_n upon_o the_o anveile_v know_v what_o the_o smith_n will_v make_v of_o it_o whether_o a_o lock_n or_o a_o key_n 2._o though_o the_o church_n or_o god_n child_n do_v not_o yet_o see_v what_o the_o work_n of_o god_n will_v be_v yet_o how_o hardly_o soever_o god_n do_v deal_v with_o they_o though_o he_o cast_v they_o never_o so_o oft_o into_o the_o fire_n &_o hammer_v and_o beat_v they_o never_o so_o much_o yea_o though_o they_o have_v a_o apprehension_n of_o his_o wrath_n glad_a that_o they_o shall_v bless_v the_o day_n that_o god_n do_v chastise_v they_o when_o they_o shall_v see_v the_o evil_a that_o god_n keep_v they_o from_o and_o the_o good_a he_o have_v effect_v so_o be_v the_o year_n of_o a_o man_n especial_o if_o we_o compare_v they_o with_o thing_n above_o and_o with_o the_o day_n and_o year_n that_o we_o be_v to_o live_v in_o heaven_n so_o that_o let_v a_o man_n look_v back_o to_o the_o time_n pass_v and_o wise_o judge_v of_o it_o and_o set_v to_o it_o the_o uttermost_a of_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o all_o will_v appear_v to_o pass_v away_o from_o we_o either_o as_o the_o time_n wherein_o a_o tale_n be_v tell_v or_o those_o thing_n pass_v away_o that_o be_v tell_v in_o a_o tale_n which_o be_v very_o quick_o and_o speedy_o 1._o this_o show_v the_o vanity_n of_o they_o that_o make_v such_o ado_n for_o state_n and_o title_n and_o tenor_n for_o this_o life_n oh_o they_o think_v it_o a_o goodly_a matter_n if_o they_o have_v and_o hold_v a_o thing_n for_o so_o many_o life_n and_o for_o they_o and_o their_o child_n life_n and_o yet_o alas_o it_o be_v if_o it_o be_v compare_v with_o the_o life_n of_o heaven_n but_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o tenure_n for_o the_o space_n of_o a_o tale_n tell_v or_o a_o word_n speak_v and_o what_o madness_n then_o be_v it_o that_o most_o man_n show_v to_o hazard_v the_o one_o to_o get_v the_o other_o that_o they_o care_v not_o almost_o how_o they_o break_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o man_n for_o it_o sure_o the_o little_a faith_n and_o hope_n or_o none_o that_o we_o have_v of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v make_v person_n so_o dote_v and_o mad_a upon_o the_o title_n and_o tenor_n of_o this_o life_n which_o be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n that_o our_o day_n and_o year_n be_v they_o pass_v away_o all_o alike_o 2._o it_o show_v also_o the_o vanity_n of_o such_o who_o as_o though_o their_o day_n and_o year_n will_v never_o come_v unto_o a_o end_n spend_v day_n after_o day_n and_o year_n after_o year_n in_o that_o they_o call_v pas-time_n whereas_o time_n pass_v away_o of_o itself_o swift_a enough_o and_o that_o in_o god_n wrath_n it_o be_v more_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n if_o it_o can_v be_v to_o use_v mean_n to_o hold_v and_o continue_v time_n rather_o than_o to_o pass_v it_o away_o 3._o let_v this_o teach_v we_o whilst_o we_o have_v it_o to_o make_v the_o best_a use_n we_o can_v of_o it_o when_o our_o year_n be_v go_v we_o can_v revoke_v they_o how_o soon_o they_o be_v go_v the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o teach_v and_o we_o may_v feel_v by_o our_o own_o experience_n therefore_o whilst_o we_o live_v here_o let_v we_o not_o so_o much_o trouble_v our_o thought_n about_o the_o mean_n of_o this_o life_n as_o about_o devise_v how_o we_o may_v employ_v our_o time_n and_o spend_v our_o life_n to_o best_a purpose_n 4._o though_o we_o be_v to_o count_v the_o shortness_n of_o our_o life_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o misery_n thereof_o and_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o life_n which_o follow_v a_o blessing_n yet_o in_o itself_o we_o shall_v not_o so_o account_v of_o it_o but_o though_o it_o be_v miserable_a and_o the_o long_o it_o be_v the_o long_o it_o keep_v we_o from_o a_o better_a yet_o the_o very_a shortness_n of_o this_o miserable_a life_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v as_o a_o effect_n of_o god_n wrath_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o blessing_n of_o god_n if_o we_o know_v how_o to_o use_v it_o to_o live_v long_o here_o though_o we_o shall_v live_v as_o miserable_a a_o life_n as_o any_o ever_o live_v neither_o shall_v we_o endeavour_v or_o desire_v to_o do_v any_o thing_n to_o shorten_v the_o same_o verse_n 10._o the_o day_n of_o our_o year_n be_v seventie_o year_n and_o if_o by_o reason_n of_o strength_n they_o be_v eighty_o year_n yet_o be_v their_o strength_n then_o labour_n and_o sorrow_n for_o it_o be_v soon_o cut_v off_o and_o we_o fly_v away_o in_o these_o word_n the_o prophet_n prove_v that_o which_o he_o say_v before_o that_o we_o spend_v our_o year_n as_o a_o tale_n that_o be_v tell_v the_o year_n of_o they_o which_o ordinary_o live_v the_o uttermost_a of_o their_o day_n be_v but_o threescore_o and_o ten_o and_o if_o any_o live_v till_o eighty_o through_o strength_n yet_o be_v their_o strength_n then_o labour_n and_o sorrow_n etc._n etc._n now_o if_o the_o long_a period_n of_o day_n that_o man_n ordinary_o live_v be_v so_o short_a a_o time_n and_o the_o long_a time_n fly_v so_o fast_o then_o well_o may_v the_o prophet_n say_v that_o our_o day_n pass_v away_o as_o a_o tale_n that_o be_v tell_v for_o those_o who_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o strength_n live_v till_o 35._o eighty_o year_n either_o they_o be_v man_n that_o undergo_v in_o this_o life_n many_o labour_n and_o travel_n and_o then_o their_o very_a strength_n bring_v nothing_o unto_o they_o but_o matter_n of_o labour_n and_o sorrow_n for_o the_o strong_a a_o man_n have_v be_v and_o the_o great_a labour_n and_o travel_n he_o have_v undergo_v the_o more_o full_a of_o ache_n and_o pain_n be_v his_o old_a age_n wont_a to_o be_v or_o they_o live_v merry_o and_o cheerful_o free_a from_o ordinary_a passion_n and_o grievance_n and_o than_o their_o life_n fly_v away_o and_o when_o they_o be_v bring_v to_o these_o year_n their_o day_n be_v but_o day_n of_o sorrow_n and_o that_o with_o they_o the_o rather_o because_o they_o can_v follow_v those_o delight_n then_o that_o former_o they_o have_v do_v howsoever_o it_o be_v there_o be_v none_o common_o who_o day_n have_v seem_v to_o they_o to_o pass_v swift_a away_o than_o those_o that_o live_v the_o long_a none_o be_v less_o weary_a of_o life_n nor_o more_o unwilling_a to_o die_v common_o then_o they_o the_o life_n therefore_o of_o such_o though_o full_a of_o never_o so_o much_o sorrow_n and_o trouble_n fly_v away_o and_o such_o be_v the_o love_n that_o ordinary_o we_o bear_v to_o this_o life_n that_o though_o death_n come_v not_o till_o eighty_o year_n yet_o it_o seem_v then_o to_o fly_v unto_o we_o the_o doctrine_n be_v plain_a that_o our_o day_n be_v now_o but_o seventy_o year_n that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o time_n that_o ordinary_o man_n do_v not_o pass_v in_o that_o time_n in_o profaneness_n except_o the_o lord_n show_v more_o than_o ordinary_a mercy_n we_o shall_v be_v no_o more_o fit_a then_o to_o honour_v our_o creator_n then_o so_o many_o dead_a man_n the_o long_a that_o we_o can_v hope_v to_o live_v and_o not_o be_v child_n again_o be_v eighty_o year_n and_o then_o common_o we_o be_v as_o child_n again_o mew_v up_o and_o our_o child_n be_v either_o parent_n or_o lord_n over_o we_o use_v we_o as_o innocent_n 2._o it_o show_v the_o strange_a folly_n of_o so_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v come_v to_o the_o height_n and_o middle_n of_o our_o age_n yea_o to_o be_v fistie_a and_o upward_a yea_o to_o be_v sixty_o etc._n etc._n we_o can_v talk_v of_o our_o day_n past_a and_o of_o thing_n we_o do_v forty_o year_n since_o as_o if_o they_o be_v do_v but_o yesterday_o and_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v though_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o hope_v it_o shall_v be_v as_o much_o as_o we_o have_v spend_v and_o though_o we_o may_v presume_v it_o will_v fly_v as_o fast_o away_o as_o that_o which_o be_v pass_v in_o the_o whole_a though_o not_o in_o the_o part_n yet_o we_o live_v as_o though_o we_o have_v a_o 100_o year_n yea_o a_o 1060_o year_n to_o come_v yea_o you_o shall_v have_v many_o that_o be_v of_o 60._o 70._o yea_o 80._o year_n that_o have_v no_o more_o care_n to_o fit_v they_o to_o death_n but_o put_v the_o hour_n thereof_o as_o far_o from_o they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v in_o their_o fresh_a youth_n if_o some_o live_v a_o 100_o some_o 500_o some_o a_o 1000_o some_o 10000_o year_n among_o we_o as_o now_o they_o live_v some_o 5._o some_o 10._o some_o 40._o some_o 60._o some_o 70._o etc._n etc._n there_o may_v be_v some_o colour_n for_o this_o folly_n but_o see_v one_o of_o 500_o life_n not_o till_o 60._o one_o of_o 5000._o till_o 80._o one_o of_o 100000._o till_o a_o hundred_o none_o till_o 200._o what_o madness_n it_o be_v then_o especial_o in_o those_o that_o have_v pass_v the_o great_a time_n they_o can_v expect_v to_o have_v no_o care_n of_o the_o hour_n of_o death_n and_o of_o the_o account_n they_o shall_v then_o make_v when_o their_o whole_a time_n be_v but_o short_a as_o a_o tale_n that_o
alone_a deserve_v the_o name_n of_o wisdom_n all_o other_o sever_v from_o this_o or_o not_o subject_v to_o this_o be_v but_o mere_a folly_n and_o madness_n though_o it_o be_v esteem_v wisdom_n of_o those_o that_o be_v possess_v with_o the_o same_o folly_n and_o madness_n themselves_o now_o to_o apply_v our_o heart_n hereunto_o be_v to_o bend_v and_o spend_v the_o strength_n of_o our_o thought_n &_o affection_n that_o way_n that_o as_o we_o see_v worldly_a mind_a man_n how_o their_o mind_n run_v altogether_o upon_o the_o world_n and_o the_o mean_n of_o this_o life_n and_o the_o humour_v and_o please_v of_o they_o that_o they_o look_v for_o most_o from_o and_o all_o the_o stream_n of_o their_o affection_n flow_v that_o way_n they_o be_v never_o so_o merry_a as_o when_o the_o world_n and_o the_o mean_n of_o this_o life_n come_v in_o upon_o they_o they_o be_v never_o so_o sad_a and_o heavy_a as_o when_o they_o have_v lose_v or_o be_v in_o danger_n to_o loose_v any_o thing_n thereof_o all_o the_o power_n and_o faculty_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n be_v set_v on_o work_n one_o way_n or_o other_o about_o they_o at_o least_o the_o very_a strength_n of_o they_o so_o shall_v our_o heart_n and_o affection_n be_v set_v upon_o and_o carry_v after_o this_o true_a wisdom_n be_v serious_o bend_v unto_o the_o speedy_a and_o earnest_n and_o constant_a pursuit_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o life_n everlasting_a and_o the_o mean_n whereby_o they_o may_v be_v achieve_v now_o hence_o in_o general_n we_o learn_v 1._o that_o till_o we_o come_v to_o number_v our_o day_n as_o be_v aforesaid_a all_o our_o labour_n and_o endeavour_n be_v about_o nought_o but_o stark_a folly_n such_o as_o we_o shall_v never_o reap_v any_o sound_n or_o solid_a fruit_n therefrom_o wisdom_n when_o upon_o the_o serious_a consideration_n of_o our_o mortality_n &_o uncertain_a estate_n here_o and_o the_o few_o day_n we_o have_v here_o to_o live_v we_o shall_v careful_o endeavour_v this_o life_n any_o further_a than_o it_o may_v further_o we_o unto_o the_o life_n to_o come_v 3._o to_o count_v all_o those_o day_n lose_v that_o be_v not_o spend_v in_o the_o further_a of_o we_o unto_o eternal_a life_n 4._o to_o judge_v the_o loss_n of_o any_o hope_n or_o certainty_n in_o this_o life_n to_o be_v a_o good_a change_n for_o any_o hope_n or_o certainty_n in_o the_o next_o life_n 5._o to_o keep_v ourselves_o free_a as_o much_o as_o we_o may_v from_o all_o distraction_n and_o from_o whatsoever_o may_v hinder_v we_o in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o this_o wisdom_n 6._o to_o make_v no_o he_o it_o be_v senseless_a and_o against_o common_a reason_n that_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n wrath_n we_o shall_v desire_v or_o hope_n for_o his_o favour_n and_o yet_o continue_v in_o our_o folly_n and_o wicked_a course_n still_o and_o yet_o this_o be_v the_o course_n that_o most_o man_n take_v when_o they_o lie_v under_o any_o judgement_n of_o god_n they_o can_v call_v for_o &_o hope_n for_o mercy_n and_o favour_n and_o pray_v god_n to_o help_v they_o but_o in_o the_o mean_a while_o they_o have_v no_o desire_n nor_o purpose_n to_o seek_v after_o true_a wisdom_n that_o be_v the_o sure_a and_o certain_a mean_n whereby_o to_o please_v god_n but_o if_o ever_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n wrath_n thou_o desire_v that_o god_n shall_v be_v reconcile_v unto_o thou_o desire_v first_o that_o thy_o heart_n may_v be_v apply_v unto_o wisdom_n now_o in_o this_o petition_n of_o divine_a consolation_n he_o pray_v 1._o for_o the_o grace_n of_o reconciliation_n itself_o 2._o for_o the_o feel_n and_o effectual_a fruit_n of_o it_o the_o reconciliation_n of_o god_n to_o they_o be_v note_v out_o principal_o by_o two_o term_n 1._o of_o return_v 2._o of_o repent_v first_o he_o pray_v the_o god_n you_o shall_v see_v in_o many_o place_n of_o the_o psalm_n how_o david_n complain_v 7._o of_o nothing_o more_o than_o this_o 2._o as_o the_o child_n of_o god_n desire_v nothing_o more_o than_o the_o face_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n so_o when_o god_n turn_v his_o face_n from_o they_o and_o be_v depart_v they_o easy_o discern_v it_o and_o have_v light_o a_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o it_o so_o that_o as_o they_o be_v able_a to_o discern_v and_o feel_v his_o presence_n so_o have_v they_o a_o lively_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o his_o absence_n and_o those_o that_o never_o feel_v the_o one_o can_v possible_o feel_v the_o other_o they_o that_o complain_v not_o of_o his_o absence_n never_o feel_v his_o comfortable_a presence_n 3._o note_v the_o effect_n of_o sin_n even_o in_o god_n own_o child_n it_o make_v the_o lord_n in_o their_o own_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n to_o have_v forsake_v they_o and_o to_o be_v go_v away_o from_o they_o and_o if_o he_o be_v go_v all_o blessing_n
