he_o that_o be_v bear_v after_o the_o spirit_n even_o so_o be_v it_o now_o he_o speak_v of_o ishmael_n and_o isaac_n and_o yet_o we_o do_v not_o read_v in_o the_o scripture_n of_o any_o persecution_n between_o they_o neither_o do_v ishmael_n persecute_v his_o brother_n isaac_n with_o hand_n or_o sword_n but_o that_o which_o be_v worse_o proud_o &_o arrogant_o he_o raise_v himself_o against_o he_o mock_v he_o and_o as_o it_o be_v tread_v under_o foot_n the_o promise_n of_o god_n and_o this_o deal_n by_o the_o apostle_n be_v cáll_v a_o persecution_n &_o in_o deed_n there_o be_v not_o any_o persecution_n more_o grievous_a to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n than_o this_o now_o who_o do_v not_o daily_o see_v that_o the_o best_a christian_n and_o the_o pureness_n of_o religion_n be_v great_o persecute_v by_o papist_n atheist_n and_o hypocrite_n as_o isaac_n be_v by_o his_o brother_n ishmael_n and_o of_o all_o matter_n of_o religion_n i_o think_v there_o be_v scarce_o any_o in_o these_o day_n more_o general_o hate_v of_o such_o kind_n of_o man_n then_o that_o which_o be_v most_o altogether_o &_o almost_o only_a hand_n lead_v in_o this_o simple_a sermon_n for_o these_o &_o such_o testimony_n for_o this_o cause_n not_o only_o from_o the_o most_o worthy_a godly_a and_o learned_a divine_n both_o old_a and_o new_a of_o other_o nation_n but_o also_o from_o famous_a martyr_n and_o bishop_n in_o this_o our_o land_n in_o their_o sermon_n and_o writing_n publish_v and_o privilege_v by_o authority_n i_o hope_v then_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n why_o this_o doctrine_n shall_v not_o receive_v a_o favourable_a entertainment_n &_o allowance_n as_o of_o your_o honour_n so_o of_o all_o faithful_a christian_n have_v such_o warrant_n from_o so_o pure_a and_o learned_a man_n and_o from_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o holy_a word_n what_o soever_o i_o speak_v in_o deliver_v and_o utter_v this_o sermon_n i_o have_v here_o set_v it_o down_o so_o never_o as_o i_o can_v remember_v both_o in_o form_n and_o matter_n to_o conclude_v i_o most_o hearty_o desire_v in_o the_o lord_n the_o christian_a reader_n &_o especial_o your_o honour_n to_o accept_v this_o my_o poor_a travel_n i_o this_o manner_n so_o like_o wise_a you_o when_o you_o have_v do_v all_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v command_v you_o say_v we_o be_v unprofitable_a seruavant_n we_o have_v do_v that_o which_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o do_v the_o holy_a apostle_n and_o servant_n of_o christ_n in_o this_o place_n avouch_v and_o confess_v in_o himself_o the_o say_n of_o his_o master_n to_o be_v most_o true_a for_o occasion_n of_o cavil_v to_o the_o false_a apostle_n as_o though_o he_o under_o the_o pretence_n of_o the_o call_n of_o a_o apostle_n shall_v seem_v to_o seek_v his_o own_o gain_n and_o lucre_n among_o other_o thing_n he_o have_v say_v and_o that_o in_o the_o former_a verse_n it_o be_v better_o for_o i_o to_o die_v then_o that_o any_o man_n shall_v make_v my_o rejoice_v in_o vain_a the_o which_o word_n may_v seem_v to_o proceed_v and_o flow_v from_o a_o ambitious_a and_o vainglorious_a spirit_n and_o therefore_o it_o may_v be_v say_v what_o now_o paul_n what_o need_v all_o this_o thou_o be_v wont_v to_o glory_n in_o christ_n alone_o and_o do_v thou_o now_o glory_n in_o thy_o own_o do_n to_o such_o a_o question_n or_o objection_n the_o apostle_n aunswear_v qualifi_v his_o the_o levite_n that_o they_o red_a in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n distinct_o and_o give_v the_o sense_n and_o cause_v they_o to_o understande_v the_o read_n christ_n as_o we_o have_v hear_v already_o continual_o preach_v and_o command_v the_o same_o to_o his_o apostle_n who_o as_o they_o obey_v in_o themselves_o their_o master_n commandment_n so_o they_o require_v it_o as_o a_o continual_a and_o usual_a rule_n to_o be_v observe_v for_o ever_o of_o all_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n in_o his_o church_n and_o most_o special_o the_o apostle_n in_o those_o epistle_n which_o he_o write_v unto_o timothy_n and_o titus_n very_o large_o &_o effectual_o urge_v this_o matter_n i_o refer_v you_o also_o unto_o the_o 14._o chapter_n of_o his_o first_o epistle_n to_o the_o corinthian_n wherein_o so_o high_o he_o commend_v the_o gift_n of_o prophesy_v 1â—_n interpretation_n or_o preach_v that_o he_o prefer_v it_o before_o all_o other_o gift_n and_o account_v it_o so_o necessary_a that_o he_o will_v have_v it_o continual_o observe_v in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n again_o christ_n command_v we_o and_o we_o do_v daily_a prey_n for_o the_o enlarge_n of_o his_o kingdom_n whereas_o guide_n steward_n and_o messenger_n beside_o many_o other_o excellent_a title_n give_v to_o they_o now_o how_o can_v they_o be_v call_v light_n which_o have_v no_o light_n in_o they_o which_o either_o be_v in_o ignorance_n and_o darkness_n themselves_o or_o else_o hide_v their_o candle_n under_o a_o bushel_n how_o can_v they_o be_v call_v the_o salt_n of_o the_o earth_n which_o can_v or_o will_v not_o season_v the_o unfavorie_a and_o sinful_a people_n with_o the_o heavenly_a &_o wholesome_a doctrine_n of_o eternal_a life_n how_o can_v they_o be_v call_v pastor_n and_o teacher_n which_o do_v not_o feed_v or_o have_v no_o food_n at_o all_o to_o give_v to_o the_o flock_n how_o can_v they_o be_v call_v the_o lord_n husbandman_n which_o have_v no_o skill_n at_o all_o in_o till_v his_o ground_n and_o sow_v his_o seed_n how_o can_v they_o be_v call_v guide_n unto_o other_o which_o either_o know_v not_o the_o way_n themselves_o or_o else_o will_v not_o vouchsafe_v to_o open_v and_o declare_v it_o to_o other_o how_o can_v they_o be_v call_v steward_n which_o have_v no_o care_n of_o the_o household_n which_o either_o can_v or_o will_v not_o feed_v they_o and_o how_o can_v they_o be_v call_v the_o lord_n messenger_n which_o be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v their_o message_n or_o have_v no_o care_n at_o all_o to_o do_v it_o if_o the_o minister_n be_v a_o light_n to_o the_o people_n of_o necessity_n he_o must_v needs_o go_v and_o shine_v before_o they_o in_o knowledge_n and_o doctrine_n if_o he_o be_v the_o salt_n he_o must_v needs_o season_v if_o he_o be_v a_o pastor_n or_o shepherd_n he_o must_v needs_o feed_v if_o he_o be_v a_o husbandman_n he_o must_v needs_o have_v a_o care_n of_o the_o lord_n husbandry_n if_o he_o be_v a_o guide_n he_o must_v needs_o show_v the_o way_n if_o he_o be_v a_o steward_n he_o must_v provide_v for_o the_o household_n if_o he_o be_v a_o messenger_n he_o must_v be_v willing_a and_o able_a to_o do_v his_o message_n nay_o i_o say_v more_o it_o stand_v for_o the_o lord_n glory_n and_o credit_n to_o have_v such_o pastor_n and_o such_o husbandman_n such_o steward_n and_o messenger_n as_o have_v wisdom_n &_o knowledge_n the_o poor_a people_n of_o the_o country_n will_v not_o hire_v he_o to_o be_v a_o shepherd_n to_o their_o sheep_n who_o they_o know_v to_o be_v ignorant_a and_o careless_a and_o shall_v the_o lord_n choose_v such_o to_o govern_v &_o guide_v his_o flock_n the_o gentleman_n and_o the_o yeman_n will_v not_o hire_v any_o to_o be_v overseer_n of_o their_o husbandry_n except_o they_o know_v they_o to_o have_v sufficient_a discretion_n and_o experience_n and_o will_v he_o think_v you_o be_v content_a with_o simple_a foolish_a and_o reckless_a overseer_n of_o his_o so_o dear_a and_o precious_a a_o husbandry_n the_o noble_a man_n for_o his_o honour_n sake_n will_v seek_v to_o have_v such_o a_o one_o to_o be_v the_o steward_n of_o his_o house_n as_o be_v trusty_a wise_a &_o of_o sufficient_a to_o guide_v and_o govern_v a_o whole_a household_n and_o shall_v the_o lord_n be_v less_o careful_a of_o his_o honour_n shall_v he_o be_v content_a with_o unwise_a and_o unfaithful_a steward_n the_o prince_n will_v have_v a_o special_a care_n to_o send_v such_o to_o be_v his_o messenger_n and_o ambassador_n as_o be_v most_o wise_a and_o faithful_a and_o be_v able_a discreet_o and_o cunning_o to_o do_v their_o message_n and_o shall_v the_o lord_n messenger_n be_v without_o knowledge_n what_o can_v be_v more_o to_o the_o discredit_n and_o dishonour_n of_o his_o holy_a name_n this_o argument_n i_o amplify_v the_o more_o because_o it_o be_v very_o plain_a &_o effectual_a mark_v i_o beseech_v you_o well_o all_o these_o and_o other_o name_n give_v to_o we_o in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n do_v require_v of_o every_o minister_n of_o god_n that_o he_o preach_v the_o word_n as_o we_o have_v a_o rare_a to_o answer_v to_o our_o name_n and_o a_o care_n of_o the_o glory_n and_o credit_n of_o our_o god_n even_o so_o let_v we_o be_v careful_a in_o do_v this_o so_o necessary_a a_o duty_n what_o shall_v i_o say_v more_o the_o end_n and_o purpose_n of_o our_o call_n and_o ministry_n require_v at_o our_o hand_n preach_v the_o lord_n have_v ordain_v pastor_n and_o teacher_n for_o the_o gather_v together_o of_o his_o saint_n and_o to_o the_o edification_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n see_v than_o we_o be_v call_v to_o this_o end_n see_v we_o be_v ordain_v to_o this_o purpose_n there_o be_v no_o remedy_n we_o that_o be_v the_o minister_n of_o god_n must_v needs_o of_o necessity_n preach_v his_o word_n for_o a_o further_a proof_n and_o conclusion_n of_o this_o matter_n i_o call_v you_o to_o record_n i_o appeal_v to_o your_o own_o conscience_n which_o be_v now_o win_v to_o the_o lord_n which_o have_v some_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n which_o be_v call_v out_o of_o darkness_n to_o light_n from_o ignorance_n to_o knowledge_n you_o that_o sometime_o have_v be_v content_a with_o read_v minister_n and_o quarter_v sermon_n but_o now_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n for_o the_o word_n preach_v i_o call_v you_o i_o say_v as_o witness_n in_o this_o cause_n what_o comfort_v you_o feel_v what_o profit_n what_o power_n in_o the_o effectual_a preach_n of_o y_z e_z word_n how_o careless_a how_o profane_a how_o ignorant_a how_o lewd_a you_o be_v before_o notwithstanding_o the_o daily_a and_o the_o ordinary_a readinge_n which_o diligent_o you_o have_v what_o have_v wrought_v in_o you_o that_o measure_n of_o faith_n that_o heavenly_a knowledge_n which_o you_o now_o have_v what_o be_v it_o that_o have_v wrought_v in_o you_o such_o a_o sorrow_n of_o your_o former_a life_n such_o a_o grief_n and_o hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o superstition_n both_o in_o yourselves_o and_o other_o such_o a_o earnest_a zeal_n
judgement_n be_v able_a to_o say_v nothing_o to_o any_o purpose_n but_o yet_o let_v it_o be_v so_o that_o some_o can_v do_v this_o they_o can_v teach_v as_o they_o say_v in_o some_o measure_n their_o a_o catechise_v and_o ay_o the_o ground_n of_o religion_n yet_o this_o will_v not_o serve_v the_o turn_n there_o must_v be_v building_n after_o the_o foundation_n there_o must_v be_v a_o lead_v forward_o to_o perfection_n the_o lord_n in_o build_v the_o material_a tabernacle_n do_v choose_v man_n of_o singular_a wisdom_n and_o understanding_n and_o will_v he_o be_v content_a with_o every_o drudge_n and_o bungler_n in_o the_o build_n and_o erect_v of_o his_o spiritual_a tabernacle_n but_o herein_o chief_o have_v some_o gather_a offence_n and_o grief_n because_o i_o have_v say_v in_o this_o place_n before_o and_o also_o other_o where_o that_o such_o minister_n have_v no_o right_a to_o administer_v the_o sacrament_n this_o seem_v a_o strange_a and_o hard_a doctrine_n yea_o some_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o count_v it_o erroneous_a and_o heretical_a if_o i_o will_v stand_v upon_o the_o authority_n of_o man_n i_o can_v allege_v for_o the_o confirmation_n of_o the_o very_a word_n which_o i_o have_v speak_v the_o judgement_n of_o those_o which_o by_o common_a consent_n of_o all_o true_a christian_n be_v receive_v and_o allow_v as_o the_o best_a most_o learned_a and_o most_o pure_a divine_n that_o ever_o be_v since_o the_o time_n of_o the_o apostle_n but_o this_o i_o hope_v shall_v not_o need_v for_o if_o of_o necessity_n every_o minister_n ought_v to_o preach_v or_o if_o all_o the_o former_a argument_n will_v serve_v to_o prove_v this_o than_o also_o that_o other_o doctrine_n how_o strange_a and_o obsurde_v soever_o some_o count_n it_o i_o must_v i_o say_v needs_o necessary_o and_o consequent_o follow_v none_o ought_v of_o right_a to_o deal_v with_o the_o lord_n sacrament_n but_o his_o minister_n christ_n require_v of_o he_o that_o baptise_v that_o he_o teach_v sai_v go_v teach_v and_o baptise_v 28.19_o no_o teacher_n no_o baptiser_n that_o which_o god_n have_v join_v together_o let_v no_o man_n put_v asunder_o 11.26_o saint_n paul_n speak_v of_o the_o lord_n supper_n as_o often_o say_v he_o as_o you_o shall_v eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n you_o show_v the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v if_o the_o people_n at_o the_o receive_n publish_v jesus_n christ_n crucify_v so_o may_v i_o say_v that_o he_o or_o any_o other_o do_v the_o same_o and_o that_o more_o effectual_o if_o they_o do_v but_o say_v their_o belief_n open_o before_o the_o congregation_n but_o we_o speak_v of_o a_o singular_a of_o a_o effectual_a of_o a_o excellent_a and_o lively_a show_v of_o his_o death_n which_o be_v by_o preach_v the_o apostle_n speak_v to_o the_o galatian_n say_v â—_o that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v describe_v in_o their_o sight_n and_o among_o they_o crucify_v his_o meaning_n be_v that_o christ_n be_v so_o lively_o preach_v to_o they_o as_o his_o lively_a image_n be_v set_v before_o their_o eye_n or_o else_o have_v be_v crucify_v among_o they_o this_o be_v the_o power_n of_o preach_v this_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o the_o minister_n plain_o and_o effectual_o to_o describe_v and_o set_v forth_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n his_o passion_n so_o that_o it_o may_v be_v see_v as_o it_o be_v before_o the_o eye_n the_o first_o minister_n of_o baptism_n john_n the_o baptist_n be_v a_o preacher_n â—_o he_o join_v preach_v and_o baptism_n together_o and_o in_o no_o douâ—t_n the_o lord_n will_v leave_v to_o his_o church_n a_o example_n and_o pattern_n and_o a_o form_n of_o the_o right_a ministration_n of_o the_o sacrament_n â—_o christ_n although_o there_o be_v sundry_a cause_n why_o he_o will_v not_o baptise_v yet_o he_o minister_v the_o supper_n to_o his_o apostle_n â—â—_o but_o christ_n be_v a_o preacher_n yea_o he_o preach_v then_o of_o his_o death_n before_o that_o first_o ministration_n and_o institution_n of_o that_o sacrament_n leave_v we_o a_o example_n to_o do_v the_o like_a 20.7_o the_o apostle_n minister_v the_o sacrament_n but_o they_o all_o preach_v yea_o the_o evangelist_n luke_n in_o the_o story_n of_o the_o act_n set_v preach_v always_o before_o the_o ministration_n of_o the_o sacrament_n john_n the_o baptist_n christ_n the_o apostle_n and_o primative_a church_n be_v the_o best_a example_n that_o i_o know_v and_o best_a worthy_a to_o be_v follow_v consider_v further_o i_o beseech_v you_o the_o great_a inconvenience_n which_o follow_v in_o these_o place_n where_o the_o word_n be_v not_o preach_v the_o people_n be_v still_o in_o ignorance_n and_o blindness_n and_o keep_v still_o in_o their_o old_a and_o popish_a error_n receive_v from_o their_o forefather_n they_o know_v not_o the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n or_o to_o what_o end_n they_o serve_v they_o hold_v still_o their_o papistical_a transubstantiation_n some_o say_v they_o receive_v their_o maker_n other_o say_v they_o never_o hear_v what_o a_o sacrament_n mean_v some_o say_v they_o do_v it_o in_o a_o good_a intent_n and_o yet_o they_o know_v not_o their_o own_o intent_n other_o say_v they_o hope_v that_o they_o receive_v it_o as_o other_o do_v few_o make_v any_o conscience_n with_o knowledge_n fear_n and_o reverence_n to_o prepare_v themselves_o the_o great_a cause_n of_o this_o be_v lack_v of_o preach_v and_o in_o deed_n how_o can_v their_o great_a ignorance_n be_v take_v away_o how_o can_v their_o old_a superstitious_a error_n be_v effectual_o confute_v but_o by_o the_o continual_a and_o pure_a preach_v of_o the_o word_n and_o be_v it_o not_o than_o most_o fit_a and_o convenient_a when_o the_o sacrament_n be_v to_o be_v minister_v but_o we_o be_v so_o far_o from_o have_v any_o usual_a preach_n before_o the_o sacrament_n that_o be_v many_o thousand_o which_o never_o hear_v any_o preach_n at_o all_o of_o the_o sacrament_n in_o all_o their_o life_n they_o have_v live_v these_o 25._o year_n in_o a_o christian_a land_n under_o the_o gospel_n and_o yet_o they_o have_v profit_v no_o further_o and_o if_o they_o shall_v live_v still_o double_a and_o triple_a the_o same_o year_n they_o shall_v be_v never_o a_o whit_n the_o better_a except_o they_o have_v better_a minister_n woe_n be_v to_o i_o if_o i_o preach_v not_o the_o gospel_n learn_v one_o thing_n further_o before_o i_o go_v
