because_o they_o will_v plead_v their_o excuse_n they_o fancy_v for_o not_o do_v their_o duty_n and_o be_v a_o defence_n to_o their_o lazyness_n worldly_a mindedness_n and_o other_o naughty_a affection_n in_o short_a doubt_n and_o scruple_n never_o arise_v in_o good_a man_n mind_n without_o grief_n nor_o stay_v there_o without_o much_o trouble_n and_o therefore_o they_o long_v to_o be_v when_o we_o be_v assemble_v to_o commemorate_v that_o stupendous_a grace_n which_o our_o lord_n purchase_v for_o we_o by_o his_o precious_a blood_n and_o bestow_v upon_o his_o church_n in_o send_v the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o comforter_n to_o be_v a_o witness_n of_o his_o resurrection_n and_o exaltation_n at_o god_n right_a hand_n and_o to_o confirm_v we_o in_o the_o belief_n of_o all_o that_o thither_o and_o true_o by_o this_o sort_n of_o reason_v that_o because_o we_o be_v not_o where_o tell_v how_o often_o we_o shall_v do_v this_o we_o need_v only_o take_v care_n to_o do_v it_o sometime_o or_o other_o it_o may_v be_v think_v sufficient_a if_o we_o do_v it_o but_o once_o in_o our_o whole_a life_n and_o so_o dangerous_a be_v such_o conceit_n which_o man_n frame_v to_o themselves_o from_o such_o observation_n that_o vast_a number_n though_o otherwise_o not_o wicked_a live_v in_o a_o constant_a neglect_n of_o this_o duty_n till_o they_o come_v to_o die_v and_o then_o upon_o their_o deathbed_n call_v for_o this_o sacrament_n and_o receive_v it_o they_o think_v they_o have_v fulfil_v the_o will_n of_o our_o lord_n in_o do_v this_o as_o he_o have_v command_v because_o though_o he_o have_v command_v it_o to_o be_v do_v he_o have_v no_o where_o command_v when_o or_o how_o oft_o it_o shall_v be_v do_v from_o whence_o we_o may_v certain_o conclude_v that_o this_o be_v a_o false_a consequence_n which_o man_n draw_v from_o the_o silence_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n in_o this_o matter_n because_o it_o be_v so_o dangerous_a and_o pernicious_a that_o in_o a_o manner_n it_o quite_o destroy_v our_o religion_n by_o take_v away_o this_o part_n of_o it_o which_o be_v the_o principal_a and_o make_v it_o unnecessary_a as_o long_o as_o a_o man_n live_v so_o he_o be_v but_o sure_a to_o receive_v when_o he_o be_v at_o the_o point_n of_o death_n of_o that_o indeed_o no_o man_n can_v be_v assure_v but_o suppose_v he_o do_v receive_v the_o communion_n at_o the_o very_a last_o gasp_n he_o be_v thus_o far_o safe_a and_o not_o guilty_a of_o the_o breach_n of_o this_o commandment_n if_o this_o consequence_n be_v true_a that_o because_o our_o saviour_n have_v no_o where_o appoint_v the_o time_n or_o say_v how_o frequent_o we_o shall_v do_v this_o in_o remembrance_n of_o he_o we_o do_v comply_v with_o his_o institution_n provide_v we_o do_v it_o sometime_o or_o other_o now_o to_o destroy_v this_o false_a notion_n from_o whence_o such_o absurdity_n flow_v i_o shall_v in_o the_o first_o place_n show_v you_o that_o the_o quite_o contrary_a natural_o and_o necessary_o follow_v from_o this_o observation_n of_o our_o saviour_n appoint_v no_o time_n for_o the_o performance_n of_o that_o which_o he_o require_v to_o be_v do_v in_o remembrance_n of_o he_o from_o whence_o man_n wicked_a heart_n draw_v this_o conclusion_n as_o i_o have_v say_v that_o it_o may_v suffice_v to_o do_v this_o now_o and_o then_o though_o never_o so_o seldom_o i._o but_o the_o true_a the_o genuine_a and_o honest_a conclusion_n which_o follow_v from_o thence_o be_v this_o that_o our_o lord_n have_v name_v not_o fix_v settle_v time_n or_o time_n for_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o holy_a action_n it_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o he_o design_v and_o appoint_v it_o as_o a_o constant_a common_a and_o ordinary_a part_n of_o the_o christian_a service_n which_o he_o will_v have_v perform_v in_o his_o church_n at_o all_o time_n let_v those_o word_n of_o christ_n this_o do_v in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o be_v well_o weigh_v and_o there_o be_v instead_o of_o all_o the_o sacrifice_n whereby_o under_o the_o law_n they_o daily_o implore_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n or_o give_v thanks_o for_o they_o it_o ought_v in_o all_o conscience_n to_o be_v as_o continual_a a_o rite_n of_o religious_a worship_n as_o those_o sacrifice_n be_v and_o thus_o when_o man_n have_v upright_a heart_n and_o unbiased_a affection_n they_o do_v honest_o understand_v appoint_v on_o purpose_n for_o the_o commemoration_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o of_o god_n love_n therein_o manifest_v be_v neglect_v it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o the_o same_o love_n of_o god_n against_o their_o performance_n of_o this_o duty_n be_v general_o draw_v from_o one_o of_o these_o three_o head_n first_o from_o the_o form_n or_o manner_n wherein_o the_o holy_a communion_n be_v now_o administer_v in_o our_o church_n second_o from_o the_o company_n to_o who_o it_o be_v administer_v and_o with_o who_o it_o must_v be_v receive_v three_o from_o the_o person_n himself_o who_o be_v call_v upon_o to_o receive_v it_o who_o judge_n himself_o altogether_o unfit_a for_o so_o solemn_a a_o duty_n unto_o all_o which_o i_o doubt_v not_o to_o make_v a_o satisfactory_a answer_n if_o which_o they_o have_v not_o have_v a_o long_a acquaintance_n and_o then_o you_o will_v next_o of_o all_o grant_v i_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n before_o hand_n to_o know_v or_o imagine_v till_o he_o speak_v with_o they_o what_o such_o mind_n will_v object_v or_o scruple_n about_o this_o matter_n for_o some_o have_v a_o fancy_n against_o one_o thing_n some_o against_o another_o that_o which_o one_o allow_v another_o dis-approves_a and_o that_o which_o he_o disapprove_v another_o allow_v and_o the_o very_o best_a constitution_n it_o be_v possible_a be_v disapprove_v by_o many_o narrow_a weak_a and_o scrupulous_a mind_n now_o
reason_n to_o be_v scrupulous_a about_o this_o unfitness_n whereof_o they_o complain_v that_o there_o be_v to_o be_v so_o about_o their_o unworthy_a receive_n and_o yet_o they_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o life_n for_o by_o do_v our_o duty_n as_o well_o as_o we_o can_v we_o learn_v to_o do_v it_o with_o great_a perfection_n especial_o if_o we_o continue_v to_o do_v it_o though_o for_o the_o present_a with_o many_o imperfection_n but_o alas_o will_v some_o say_v we_o be_v not_o only_o utter_o unfit_a and_o unprepared_a for_o the_o present_a but_o it_o be_v not_o in_o our_o power_n to_o fit_v and_o prepare_v ourselves_o in_o any_o sort_n to_o be_v meet_a partaker_n of_o these_o holy_a mystery_n for_o the_o future_a to_o which_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o i_o say_v something_o before_o i_o proceed_v further_o because_o if_o this_o be_v true_a all_o my_o labour_n will_v be_v lose_v in_o persuade_v man_n to_o dispose_v themselves_o for_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o holy_a duty_n 1._o and_o here_o the_o same_o question_n may_v be_v ask_v such_o person_n which_o i_o ask_v at_o the_o first_o how_o come_v it_o not_o to_o be_v in_o your_o power_n and_o who_o fault_n be_v it_o that_o you_o be_v not_o able_a to_o fit_v yourselves_o but_o i_o omit_v this_o because_o it_o only_o throw_v the_o guilt_n upon_o such_o complainer_n but_o do_v not_o convince_v they_o of_o the_o falseness_n of_o their_o plea_n therefore_o i_o rather_o demand_v of_o such_o man_n how_o they_o can_v pretend_v to_o christianity_n and_o say_v that_o they_o can_v leave_v off_o their_o habitual_a course_n of_o sin_v what_o be_v there_o no_o power_n in_o the_o christian_a religion_n to_o alter_v a_o man_n heart_n and_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o repentance_n and_o reformation_n of_o life_n can_v he_o who_o by_o be_v make_v a_o christian_a be_v regenerate_v with_o the_o holy_a spirit_n cease_v to_o follow_v and_o to_o be_v lead_v by_o those_o carnal_a lust_n and_o worldly_a desire_n which_o at_o his_o baptism_n he_o renounce_v can_v he_o for_o instance_n forbear_v habitual_a drunkenness_n swear_v extortion_n and_o profaneness_n be_v it_o impossible_a for_o he_o to_o be_v at_o peace_n beseech_v god_n to_o grant_v we_o true_a repentance_n and_o his_o holy_a spirit_n that_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o do_v at_o that_o present_n may_v please_v he_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o our_o lame_a in_o bed_n and_o disable_v to_o move_v out_o of_o it_o but_o if_o you_o set_v the_o house_n on_o fire_n you_o can_v not_o but_o think_v you_o do_v he_o a_o great_a injury_n or_o if_o you_o stand_v by_o in_o perfect_a health_n and_o soundness_n when_o it_o take_v fire_n and_o will_v not_o stir_v hand_n or_o foot_n to_o help_v he_o you_o can_v not_o but_o look_v upon_o yourself_o as_o unneighbourly_o unkind_a and_o cruel_a in_o like_a manner_n if_o it_o be_v as_o impossible_a to_o forbear_v a_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v to_o stir_v when_o you_o be_v bind_v hand_n and_o foot_n your_o conscience_n will_v never_o accuse_v you_o but_o the_o upbraid_n you_o feel_v there_o the_o secret_a check_n and_o remorse_n the_o suspicion_n and_o fear_n which_o your_o conscience_n be_v trouble_v withal_o plain_o declare_v that_o it_o be_v in_o your_o power_n and_o that_o you_o lie_v and_o do_v not_o the_o truth_n as_o st._n john_n speak_v when_o you_o pretend_v the_o contrary_n in_o short_a if_o you_o can_v possible_o reform_v those_o sin_n which_o make_v you_o unfit_a for_o the_o communion_n how_o come_v you_o to_o charge_v they_o upon_o yourselves_o as_o sin_n if_o they_o be_v sin_n your_o own_o conscience_n tell_v you_o that_o you_o can_v avoid_v they_o and_o if_o you_o can_v why_o do_v you_o not_o go_v about_o it_o and_o by_o do_v this_o prepare_v yourselves_o to_o do_v the_o say_v you_o can_v reform_v be_v either_o sin_n of_o weakness_n or_o sin_n of_o wilfulness_n if_o they_o be_v only_o such_o weakness_n as_o can_v scarce_o possible_o be_v avoid_v by_o the_o care_n then_o all_o man_n live_v for_o aught_o we_o know_v must_v be_v unfit_a if_o they_o be_v sin_n of_o wilfulness_n than_o you_o do_v in_o these_o very_a word_n confess_v that_o they_o may_v be_v reform_v for_o wilful_a sin_n in_o the_o judgement_n of_o all_o mankind_n be_v such_o as_o by_o care_n and_o diligence_n and_o watchfulness_n over_o ourselves_o may_v be_v avoid_v as_o wilful_a in_o good_a earnest_n make_v a_o experiment_n what_o may_v be_v do_v in_o the_o use_n of_o such_o mean_n as_o god_n have_v appoint_v and_o be_v in_o our_o power_n to_o use_v but_o if_o you_o have_v try_v and_o miscarry_v why_o do_v you_o not_o try_v again_o and_o after_o that_o again_z and_o again_o and_o that_o with_o great_a diligence_n and_o care_n than_o before_o for_o this_o you_o can_v have_v do_v and_o why_o shall_v it_o be_v judge_v reasonable_a in_o our_o worldly_a affair_n to_o attempt_v over_o and_o over_o again_o the_o same_o thing_n wherein_o we_o have_v fail_v at_o the_o first_o in_o hope_n of_o better_a success_n at_o last_o and_o not_o be_v think_v fit_a nay_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o be_v willing_a to_o use_v the_o same_o repeat_v diligence_n notwithstanding_o such_o like_a discouragement_n in_o the_o weighty_a concernment_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o since_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n we_o can_v do_v the_o one_o for_o we_o do_v it_o we_o ought_v to_o first_o answer_n to_o the_o pretence_n of_o unfitness_n and_o what_o be_v last_o say_v may_v serve_v for_o a_o answer_n also_o to_o those_o that_o complain_v of_o hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o want_v of_o affection_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o holy_a duty_n let_v they_o do_v it_o as_o well_o as_o they_o be_v able_a and_o they_o will_v find_v acceptance_n with_o god_n and_o grow_v more_o affect_v with_o his_o love_n and_o for_o a_o answer_n to_o those_o also_o that_o say_v they_o be_v never_o the_o better_a for_o come_v to_o this_o sacrament_n it_o be_v certain_a they_o be_v something_o the_o better_a by_o their_o very_a come_n thither_o if_o they_o do_v not_o come_v without_o a_o resolution_n of_o amendment_n for_o that_o resolution_n be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o the_o work_n of_o god_n grace_n which_o though_o they_o do_v not_o keep_v they_o shall_v not_o thereby_o have_v be_v discourage_v from_o come_v again_o but_o rather_o have_v renew_v it_o which_o have_v be_v wont_a to_o overthrow_v it_o this_o be_v the_o way_n of_o christ_n not_o to_o sit_v down_o content_v with_o complaint_n of_o our_o unfitness_n to_o have_v communion_n with_o he_o but_o never_o to_o rest_v satisfy_v till_o by_o our_o earnest_n and_o repeat_v endeavour_n we_o be_v better_o dispose_v ii_o and_o there_o be_v this_o great_a reason_n to_o enforce_v such_o endeavour_n which_o these_o complainer_n will_v do_v well_o to_o lay_v to_o heart_n that_o if_o they_o be_v unfit_a for_o this_o holy_a duty_n of_o commemorate_n the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o receive_v the_o token_n and_o pledge_n of_o his_o love_n they_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o think_v themselves_o fit_a for_o other_o holy_a duty_n which_o be_v confess_v by_o all_o to_o be_v of_o daily_a use_n viz._n for_o prayer_n for_o thanksgiving_n and_o praise_v god_n which_o duty_n if_o man_n be_v not_o fit_a to_o perform_v they_o ought_v to_o look_v upon_o themselves_o as_o not_o fit_a to_o live_v in_o the_o world_n or_o to_o go_v out_o of_o it_o but_o if_o they_o be_v not_o unfit_a for_o these_o then_o how_o can_v they_o say_v they_o be_v unfit_a for_o this_o since_o our_o part_n in_o the_o holy_a communion_n be_v whole_o perform_v by_o devout_a prayer_n and_o praise_n and_o thanksgiving_n with_o such_o faith_n and_o love_n and_o holy_a resolution_n as_o aught_o always_o to_o accompany_v those_o holy_a action_n and_o our_o part_n be_v thus_o perform_v what_o reason_n have_v we_o to_o think_v that_o god_n will_v not_o perform_v he_o by_o account_v we_o worthy_a to_o receive_v those_o blessing_n which_o he_o be_v worthy_a to_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n itself_o vi_o if_o obstinacy_n as_o he_o speak_v a_o little_a before_o in_o that_o book_n do_v not_o knit_v its_o stubborn_a sinew_n fit_a or_o not_o to_o have_v communion_n with_o christ_n in_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o determine_v the_o case_n with_o such_o certainty_n as_o to_o be_v no_o long_o perplex_v with_o doubt_n and_o fear_n about_o it_o 1._o the_o first_o of_o these_o question_n need_v not_o be_v long_o consider_v for_o by_o receive_v baptism_n and_o be_v present_a at_o the_o prayer_n where_o the_o creed_n their_o mutual_a love_n to_o each_o other_o 6._o which_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o do_v that_o they_o do_v the_o quite_o contrary_a for_o true_a love_n delight_v to_o keep_v other_o in_o countenance_n but_o they_o put_v such_o to_o the_o blush_n as_o be_v in_o a_o poor_a and_o mean_a condition_n and_o can_v bring_v nothing_o to_o the_o common_a table_n but_o themselves_o who_o be_v be_v yield_v and_o compliance_n to_o do_v what_o christ_n have_v command_v and_o not_o to_o do_v it_o be_v that_o very_a hardness_n which_o they_o bemoan_v and_o if_o any_o quarrel_n or_o contention_n well_o be_v avoid_v or_o have_v a_o friend_n come_v to_o see_v we_o the_o day_n before_o the_o communion_n with_o who_o we_o can_v not_o but_o in_o civility_n spend_v a_o good_a deal_n of_o time_n
