many_o that_o be_v confident_a that_o they_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n three_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o many_o that_o come_v very_o near_o to_o heaven_n yet_o to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n i_o shall_v prove_v these_o three_o and_o let_v your_o heart_n go_v along_o with_o i_o and_o oh_o that_o you_o and_o i_o can_v follow_v the_o counsel_n of_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n with_o tremble_a for_o the_o first_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o many_o that_o profess_v the_o truth_n and_o true_a religion_n to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n i_o shall_v give_v you_o two_o instance_n for_o this_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n be_v those_o that_o profess_v the_o truth_n and_o true_a religion_n they_o sit_v in_o moses_n chair_n our_o saviour_n command_v his_o disciple_n to_o hear_v they_o because_o they_o open_v the_o law_n they_o be_v expounder_n of_o the_o law_n and_o our_o saviour_n command_v his_o disciple_n to_o hear_v they_o although_o they_o shall_v not_o do_v as_o they_o do_v they_o profess_v the_o truth_n and_o true_a religion_n and_o in_o the_o outward_a act_n of_o piety_n these_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n go_v exceed_v far_o i_o will_v show_v you_o how_o far_o they_o go_v in_o these_o six_o particular_n first_o they_o search_v the_o scripture_n they_o be_v very_o diligent_a in_o read_v the_o law_n of_o moses_n they_o give_v themselves_o so_o much_o to_o the_o study_n of_o the_o law_n that_o they_o can_v tell_v exact_o almost_o every_o verse_n in_o the_o five_o book_n of_o moses_n nay_o they_o can_v tell_v you_o how_o often_o every_o letter_n in_o the_o hebrew_n alphabet_n be_v repeat_v in_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n for_o example_n the_o letter_n aleph_fw-la be_v repeat_v three-hundred_n seventy-seven_a time_n in_o the_o five_o book_n of_o moses_n second_o they_o be_v frequent_a in_o prayer_n they_o pray_v in_o the_o street_n and_o in_o the_o synagogue_n and_o make_v long_a prayer_n for_o a_o pretence_n to_o devour_v widow_n house_n matth._n 23.14_o three_o to_o prayer_n they_o add_v fast_v also_o hear_v what_o one_o of_o they_o say_v luke_n 18.12_o i_o fast_o twice_o in_o the_o week_n and_o this_o he_o do_v for_o the_o tame_n of_o the_o body_n four_o they_o be_v very_o strict_a in_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o sabbath_n insomuch_o that_o they_o quarrel_v with_o our_o saviour_n because_o his_o disciple_n do_v but_o pluck_v the_o ear_n of_o corn_n upon_o the_o sabbath_n day_n nay_o they_o be_v so_o superstitious_a in_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o sabbath_n that_o if_o one_o have_v get_v a_o thorn_n in_o his_o foot_n they_o will_v not_o pull_v it_o out_o upon_o the_o sabbath-day_n for_o fear_v of_o break_v the_o sabbath_n five_o they_o be_v very_o industrious_a in_o teach_v of_o other_o they_o compass_v sea_n and_o land_n to_o make_v a_o proselyte_n matth._n 23.15_o they_o will_v have_v take_v any_o pain_n to_o win_v other_o to_o the_o same_o sect_n or_o religion_n with_o themselves_o six_o they_o be_v very_o exact_a and_o unblameable_a in_o their_o outward_a conversation_n for_o 1._o they_o be_v free_a from_o more_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a sin_n which_o stare_v a_o man_n in_o the_o face_n god_n i_o thank_v thou_o say_v the_o pharisee_fw-mi that_o i_o be_o not_o as_o other_o man_n be_v extortioner_n unjust_a adulterer_n or_o even_o as_o this_o publican_n luke_n 18.11_o nay_o they_o separate_v themselves_o from_o notorious_a sinner_n they_o will_v not_o come_v into_o the_o company_n of_o drunkard_n and_o sabbath-breaker_n they_o be_v of_o the_o strict_a religion_n among_o the_o jew_n their_o religion_n be_v the_o most_o strait_a sect_n act_v 26.5_o which_o know_v i_o from_o the_o beginning_n if_o they_o will_v testify_v that_o after_o the_o most_o strait_a sect_n of_o our_o religion_n i_o live_v a_o pharisee_fw-mi insomuch_o that_o it_o be_v general_o conceive_v among_o the_o jew_n that_o if_o there_o be_v but_o two_o man_n in_o all_o the_o world_n that_o shall_v go_v to_o heaven_n a_o scribe_n be_v one_o and_o a_o pharisee_fw-mi the_o other_o and_o yet_o those_o professor_n for_o all_o that_o fall_v short_a of_o heaven_n and_o our_o saviour_n say_v that_o except_o your_o righteousness_n exceed_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n you_o shall_v in_o no_o case_n enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n matth._n 5.20_o let_v i_o give_v you_o another_o example_n of_o the_o five_o foolish_a virgin_n which_o you_o read_v of_o in_o the_o opinion_n of_o other_o be_v wait_v for_o the_o come_n of_o the_o bridegroom_n christ_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o those_o virgin-professor_n fall_v short_a of_o heaven_n matth._n 25.10_o and_o while_o they_o go_v to_o buy_v the_o bridegroom_n come_v and_o they_o that_o be_v ready_a go_v in_o with_o he_o to_o the_o marriage_n and_o the_o door_n be_v shut_v the_o door_n of_o heaven_n the_o door_n of_o mercy_n be_v shut_v against_o they_o so_o you_o see_v the_o first_o branch_n prove_v 2._o let_v i_o prove_v the_o second_o branch_n that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o many_o that_o be_v confident_a that_o they_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o that_o they_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o and_o belong_v to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n in_o matth._n 7.22_o 23_o many_o will_v say_v to_o i_o in_o that_o day_n at_o the_o great_a day_n of_o judgement_n lord_n lord_n have_v we_o not_o prophesy_v in_o thy_o name_n and_o in_o thy_o name_n have_v cast_v out_o devil_n and_o in_o thy_o name_n have_v do_v many_o wonderful_a work_n and_o than_o will_v i_o profess_v unto_o they_o i_o never_o know_v you_o depart_v from_o i_o you_o that_o second_o branch_n 3._o let_v i_o prove_v the_o three_o branch_n of_o the_o doctrine_n that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o man_n to_o come_v very_o near_o to_o heaven_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n let_v i_o give_v you_o some_o example_n for_o that_o this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o the_o young_a man_n in_o the_o gospel_n which_o you_o read_v of_o matth._n 19_o 20_o 21_o when_o our_o saviour_n bid_v he_o to_o keep_v the_o commandment_n say_v he_o lord_n all_o these_o thing_n i_o have_v keep_v from_o my_o youth_n up_o the_o meaning_n be_v this_o as_o to_o his_o outward_a
those_o glorious_a hope_n that_o be_v lay_v up_o for_o the_o saint_n in_o light_n four_o be_v content_v to_o endure_v some_o hardship_n in_o the_o way_n heaven_n will_v make_v amends_o for_o all_o all_o the_o cost_n discouragement_n and_o difficulty_n that_o you_o meet_v with_o in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o your_o hope_n will_v be_v abundant_o recompense_v by_o one_o hour_n fruition_n of_o that_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o see_v be_v eternal_a 2_o cor._n 4.18_o if_o you_o live_v by_o faith_n you_o will_v fetch_v your_o comfort_n from_o christ_n more_o than_o from_o any_o thing_n in_o let_v we_o be_v content_v to_o suffer_v hardship_n for_o a_o while_n that_o we_o may_v enjoy_v the_o pleasant_a land_n for_o ever_o and_o ever_o so_o much_o for_o the_o first_o branch_n of_o the_o text_n that_o be_v the_o horrible_a ingratitude_n of_o this_o people_n they_o despise_v the_o pleasant_a land_n the_o ground_n of_o that_o ingratitude_n you_o have_v in_o the_o next_o word_n of_o the_o text_n and_o believe_v not_o his_o word_n but_o so_o much_o for_o this_o time_n psal._n cvi_o 24._o and_o believe_v not_o his_o word_n i_o have_v speak_v to_o this_o text_n in_o one_o sermon_n already_o as_o you_o may_v remember_v in_o it_o i_o take_v notice_n of_o two_o branch_n first_o israel_n horrible_a ingratitude_n in_o these_o word_n they_o despise_v the_o pleasant_a land_n and_o that_o i_o finish_v last_o day_n now_o i_o come_v to_o the_o second_o branch_n of_o the_o text_n that_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o ingratitude_n in_o these_o word_n they_o believe_v not_o his_o word_n what_o word_n they_o believe_v not_o the_o promise_n that_o god_n have_v make_v unto_o they_o that_o he_o will_v bestow_v the_o land_n of_o canaan_n upon_o they_o nay_o god_n do_v not_o only_o promise_v it_o but_o he_o swear_v unto_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n gen._n 50.24_o and_o joseph_n say_v unto_o his_o brethren_n i_o die_v and_o god_n will_v sure_o visit_v you_o and_o bring_v you_o out_o of_o this_o land_n to_o the_o land_n which_o he_o swear_v to_o abraham_n to_o isaac_n and_o jacob._n but_o because_o the_o spy_n forsooth_o come_v and_o tell_v they_o oh_o there_o be_v wall_v city_n and_o giant_n and_o anakim_v to_o fight_v with_o and_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o you_o to_o get_v possession_n of_o the_o land_n therefore_o they_o believe_v the_o spy_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v god_n they_o believe_v the_o report_n of_o those_o that_o tell_v they_o of_o the_o giant_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v god_n report_n they_o will_v not_o believe_v god_n promise_n so_o the_o doctrine_n i_o shall_v commend_v to_o you_o from_o this_o second_o branch_n of_o the_o text_n be_v this_o doct._n one_o main_a reason_n why_o man_n do_v undervalue_v the_o heavenly_a canaan_n and_o so_o come_v short_a of_o it_o be_v their_o unbelief_n look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n here_o speak_v of_o in_o the_o text_n the_o sin_n that_o make_v they_o despise_v and_o undervalue_v the_o land_n of_o canaan_n and_o so_o be_v debar_v and_o shut_v out_o of_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n be_v their_o unbelief_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v express_o heb._n 3._o ult_n so_o we_o see_v they_o can_v not_o enter_v in_o because_o of_o unbelief_n so_o here_o one_o main_a reason_n why_o man_n undervalue_v the_o heavenly_a canaan_n and_o so_o come_v short_a or_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o heavenly_a canaan_n it_o be_v their_o unbelief_n man_n believe_v lie_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o truth_n they_o believe_v the_o devil_n who_o be_v a_o liar_n and_o tell_v they_o they_o may_v come_v to_o heaven_n with_o a_o wet-finger_n and_o therefore_o they_o may_v live_v as_o they_o listen_v but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n that_o tell_v they_o straight_o be_v the_o gate_n and_o narrow_a be_v the_o way_n that_o lead_v to_o life_n and_o few_o there_o be_v that_o find_v it_o matth._n 7.14_o they_o believe_v the_o father_n of_o lie_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v he_o that_o be_v the_o god_n of_o truth_n who_o say_v strive_v to_o enter_v in_o at_o the_o strait_a gate_n for_o many_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o shall_v seek_v to_o enter_v in_o but_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a luke_n 13.24_o they_o believe_v the_o report_n of_o satan_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o report_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o tell_v we_o express_o 1_o pet._n 4.18_o and_o if_o the_o righteous_a scarce_o be_v save_v where_o shall_v the_o ungodly_a and_o sinner_n appear_v they_o will_v not_o believe_v that_o doctrine_n which_o you_o may_v remember_v prove_v out_o of_o heb._n 4.1_o let_v we_o therefore_o fear_n lest_o a_o promise_n be_v leave_v we_o of_o enter_v into_o his_o rest_n any_o of_o you_o shall_v seem_v to_o come_v short_a of_o it_o where_o i_o show_v you_o that_o the_o life_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v a_o life_n of_o fear_n and_o that_o in_o matter_n of_o soul-concernment_n christian_n shall_v not_o only_o be_v very_o jealous_a of_o themselves_o but_o of_o other_o also_o i_o also_o show_v you_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o many_o that_o be_v professor_n of_o the_o truth_n or_o true_a religion_n to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n and_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o many_o that_o be_v confident_a that_o they_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n and_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o many_o to_o come_v very_o near_o to_o heaven_n and_o yet_o to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n but_o man_n will_v not_o believe_v these_o truth_n now_o their_o unbelief_n be_v the_o cause_n why_o they_o slight_a heaven_n and_o shall_v be_v deprive_v of_o heaven_n for_o the_o better_a explication_n of_o this_o doctrine_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n i_o shall_v open_v to_o you_o first_o what_o this_o unbelief_n be_v that_o make_v man_n so_o undervalue_v the_o heavenly_a canaan_n second_o why_o this_o unbelief_n be_v such_o a_o great_a and_o grievous_a sin_n so_o dangerous_a and_o destructive_a that_o it_o deprive_v man_n of_o that_o heavenly_a canaan_n first_o what_o this_o unbelief_n be_v that_o make_v man_n slight_v the_o heavenly_a canaan_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v a_o twofold_a unbelief_n there_o be_v a_o negative_a and_o there_o be_v a_o positive_a unbelief_n first_o there_o be_v a_o negative_a unbelief_n and_o that_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o pagan_n and_o heathen_n that_o never_o hear_v of_o god_n nor_o of_o the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ_n they_o believe_v not_o because_o they_o know_v not_o they_o know_v not_o god_n rom._n 10.14_o how_o shall_v they_o believe_v in_o he_o of_o who_o they_o have_v not_o hear_v this_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o pagan_n this_o ignorance_n it_o excuse_v in_o part_n though_o not_o in_o whole_a their_o sin_n be_v not_o so_o great_a by_o far_o as_o the_o sin_n of_o those_o that_o do_v profess_v the_o gospel_n yet_o their_o negative_a unbelief_n be_v a_o sin_n because_o god_n commandment_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v believe_v on_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n 1_o john_n 3.23_o and_o this_o be_v his_o commandment_n that_o we_o believe_v in_o the_o name_n of_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n but_o this_o be_v the_o negative_a unbelief_n this_o concern_v not_o we_o but_o it_o concern_v those_o that_o know_v not_o god_n second_o there_o
god_n and_o that_o he_o have_v power_n to_o save_v and_o to_o destroy_v james_n 4.12_o there_o be_v one_o lawgiver_n who_o have_v power_n to_o save_v and_o to_o destroy_v and_o you_o profess_v that_o he_o can_v do_v whatsoever_o he_o please_v in_o heaven_n and_o in_o earth_n and_o among_o all_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o that_o none_o can_v stay_v his_o hand_n none_o can_v say_v the_o three_o commandment_n by_o not_o honour_v god_n by_o not_o glorify_v god_n you_o do_v not_o sanctify_v and_o honour_v his_o name_n in_o his_o word_n in_o his_o work_n in_o his_o providence_n in_o his_o ordinance_n in_o his_o mercy_n you_o make_v no_o bone_n i_o say_v of_o break_v his_o command_n thus_o you_o profess_v one_o thing_n you_o say_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v your_o lord_n your_o lawgiver_n but_o you_o practise_v another_o when_o you_o slight_v his_o authority_n and_o break_v his_o command_n see_v how_o angry_o our_o saviour_n speak_v luke_n 6.46_o and_o why_o call_v you_o i_o notwithstanding_o your_o practice_n cross_v your_o profession_n for_o let_v a_o minister_n come_v and_o thunder_v these_o threaten_n in_o your_o ear_n yea_o let_v a_o minister_n come_v and_o spit_v fire_n and_o vengeance_n in_o the_o face_n of_o sinner_n yet_o notwithstanding_o they_o do_v no_o more_o tremble_v than_o the_o seat_n they_o sit_v on_o it_o be_v well_o if_o some_o snner_n have_v dead_a and_o barren_a heart_n seven_o our_o infirmity_n may_v arise_v from_o our_o lose_v our_o first_o love_n remit_v of_o the_o zeal_n and_o intention_n and_o forwardness_n that_o once_o we_o have_v
