call_v what_o they_o be_v and_o how_o far_o lawful_a on_o that_o day_n what_o be_v the_o proper_a duty_n of_o the_o day_n and_o the_o like_a for_o the_o clear_a resolution_n therefore_o of_o this_o institute_v 3._o what_o work_v the_o lewes_z may_v do_v on_o their_o sabbath_n 4._o whether_o and_o what_o liberty_n christian_n now_o have_v on_o the_o sunday_n more_o than_o they_o have_v and_o who_o be_v the_o lawgiver_n judge_v it_o meet_v and_o right_a that_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n shall_v order_v their_o life_n the_o ceremonial_a be_v belong_v to_o man_n as_o join_v together_o decency_n in_o their_o ecclesiastical_a meeting_n and_o performance_n the_o judicial_a belong_v to_o man_n as_o be_v join_v in_o a_o civil_a society_n or_o commonwealth_n contain_v the_o form_n of_o civil_a government_n to_o be_v use_v by_o they_o tend_v to_o their_o good_a as_o they_o be_v a_o society_n and_o to_o the_o preservation_n and_o exact_v of_o the_o eutward_a worship_n of_o god_n and_o the_o discipline_n thereof_o as_o it_o be_v command_v in_o the_o moral_a and_o ceremonial_a law_n so_o that_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n determine_v 101._o the_o moral_a in_o order_n to_o god_n the_o political_a or_o judicial_a in_o order_n to_o man_n in_o a_o civil_a society_n and_o both_o in_o accommodation_n to_o that_o state_n of_o the_o church_n and_o these_o though_o they_o have_v in_o they_o something_o which_o be_v juris_fw-la moralis_fw-la and_o so_o far_o forth_o be_v contain_v under_o the_o moral_a precept_n yet_o be_v fit_v to_o serve_v that_o state_n of_o the_o church_n which_o be_v to_o be_v hold_v in_o expectation_n of_o the_o messiah_n when_o the_o time_n come_v that_o he_o be_v actual_o exhibit_v and_o so_o the_o promise_n fulfil_v the_o shadow_n be_v then_o of_o no_o long_o use_v 17._o the_o body_n be_v come_v and_o therefore_o at_o the_o time_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n they_o be_v abrogate_a de_n jure_v so_o that_o they_o become_v unnecessary_a and_o in_o that_o wherein_o they_o be_v reducible_a to_o this_o be_v antiquate_v and_o out_o of_o date_n now_o the_o precept_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n be_v summary_o comprehend_v in_o the_o decalogue_n or_o ten_o commandment_n which_o have_v this_o prerogative_n peculiar_a to_o they_o that_o they_o be_v deliver_v not_o by_o moses_n but_o by_o god_n himself_o and_o by_o he_o write_v in_o table_n of_o stone_n and_o preserve_v in_o the_o ark_n to_o show_v their_o dignity_n above_o other_o and_o to_o note_v out_o the_o perpetuity_n of_o observance_n which_o be_v due_a unto_o they_o where_o before_o we_o apply_v these_o thing_n to_o our_o present_a purpose_n two_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v note_v first_o nature_n that_o howsoever_o all_o the_o precept_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n belong_v to_o the_o the_o first_o principle_n or_o common_a notion_n implant_v in_o we_o be_v either_o approve_a or_o reject_v and_o these_o be_v absolute_o of_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n other_o there_o be_v that_o require_v more_o consideration_n of_o circumstance_n and_o the_o use_n of_o discourse_n to_o apprehend_v and_o judge_v of_o they_o and_o these_o be_v so_o of_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n that_o notwithstanding_o they_o require_v the_o help_n of_o discipline_n by_o which_o those_o which_o be_v ignorant_a and_o not_o able_a by_o diligent_a consideration_n or_o discourse_n to_o attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o may_v be_v instruct_v by_o the_o wise_a and_o learned_a and_o last_o there_o be_v some_o to_o the_o knowledge_n whereof_o humane_a reason_n stand_v in_o need_n of_o but_o the_o ceremonial_a and_o judicial_a law_n also_o so_o he_o speak_v of_o all_o and_o do_v indeed_o not_o destroy_v but_o fulfil_v they_o all_o though_o in_o a_o different_a manner_n 1._o he_o fulfil_v the_o whole_a law_n by_o his_o actual_a and_o personal_a obedience_n to_o it_o and_o by_o supply_v the_o defect_n of_o it_o that_o it_o be_v unable_a to_o justify_v we_o in_o itself_o might_n by_o the_o help_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o accession_n of_o faith_n in_o he_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v that_o 4_o which_o otherwise_o it_o can_v not_o 2._o he_o fulfil_v the_o ceremonial_a law_n and_o so_o the_o judicial_a too_o so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v typical_a beside_o his_o subjection_n to_o they_o by_o a_o real_a exhibition_n of_o that_o whereof_o they_o be_v shadow_n and_o though_o by_o this_o mean_n their_o observation_n according_a to_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o law_n cease_v yet_o do_v he_o not_o hereby_o destroy_v but_o perfect_v they_o according_a to_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o circumcision_n which_o be_v a_o legal_a ceremony_n do_v we_o then_o say_v he_o make_v void_v 31._o the_o law_n through_o faith_n god_n forbid_v yea_o we_o establish_v the_o law_n this_o place_n then_o expound_v according_a to_o the_o true_a meaning_n and_o intent_n of_o our_o saviour_n make_v nothing_o for_o the_o total_a morality_n of_o the_o four_o commandment_n nor_o that_o it_o be_v not_o universal_o true_a that_o whatsoever_o precept_n be_v give_v to_o adam_n in_o innocency_n be_v therefore_o moral_a and_o perpetual_a for_o then_o the_o symbolical_a precept_n seven_o day_n on_o which_o he_o rest_v the_o text_n do_v not_o say_v god_n rest_v the_o seven_o day_n and_o therefore_o he_o will_v have_v one_o of_o the_o seven_o to_o be_v sanctify_v that_o be_v but_o the_o exposition_n or_o gloss_n not_o the_o text_n the_o word_n of_o man_n not_o of_o god_n but_o some_o may_v haply_o say_v that_o the_o particular_a day_n be_v alterable_a and_o upon_o good_a ground_n be_v alter_v this_o i_o grant_v but_o say_v withal_o that_o he_o which_o hold_v the_o sabbath_n to_o be_v institute_v before_o the_o fall_n and_o for_o that_o cause_n moral_a and_o flight_n may_v not_o happen_v on_o the_o sabbath_n day_n to_o intimate_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o observation_n of_o that_o day_n by_o christian_n then_o do_v s._n paul_n cross_v 16_o our_o saviour_n intent_n in_o number_v that_o among_o the_o shadow_n which_o vanish_v at_o christ_n death_n and_o then_o have_v also_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n ever_o since_o err_v in_o so_o account_v it_o and_o condemn_v the_o observation_n of_o it_o with_o a_o anathema_n to_o those_o that_o in_o 〈◊〉_d this_o point_n shall_v be_v find_v to_o judaize_v s._n chrysostome_n be_v so_o far_o from_o think_v that_o the_o sabbath_n which_o our_o saviour_n there_o speak_v of_o do_v belong_v to_o christian_n that_o upon_o that_o ground_n he_o expound_v that_o speech_n of_o our_o saviour_n as_o speak_v not_o to_o his_o apostle_n but_o to_o the_o jew_n thou_o see_v say_v he_o that_o he_o speak_v to_o the_o jew_n for_o the_o apostle_n be_v not_o to_o keep_v the_o sabbath_n etc._n etc._n but_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v speak_v to_o the_o disciple_n yet_o can_v no_o such_o thing_n be_v thence_o collect_v as_o they_o will_v have_v for_o our_o saviour_n have_v good_a ground_n so_o to_o advise_v his_o disciple_n notwithstanding_o god_n at_o that_o time_n require_v no_o keep_n of_o the_o sabbath_n for_o though_o the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o law_n and_o this_o among_o the_o rest_n be_v dead_a be_v yet_o weak_a in_o faith_n or_o hinder_v other_o of_o that_o nation_n from_o believe_v in_o he_o beside_o be_v it_o that_o christian_n do_v hold_v themselves_o free_v from_o the_o observance_n of_o the_o sabbath_n yet_o be_v among_o those_o who_o still_o make_v conscience_n of_o it_o even_o to_o superstition_n as_o do_v the_o unconverted_a jew_n it_o can_v not_o but_o prove_v very_o incommodious_a to_o their_o speedy_a and_o far_a flight_n which_o the_o greatness_n and_o suddenness_n of_o the_o danger_n require_v in_o as_o much_o as_o thereby_o they_o shall_v expose_v these_o few_o year_n ever_o design_v by_o the_o name_n of_o the_o sabbath_n without_o some_o difference_n add_v to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o that_o of_o the_o jew_n for_o though_o we_o find_v it_o which_o be_v therefore_o call_v by_o the_o evangelist_n and_o s._n paul_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d one_o or_o the_o first_o day_n from_o the_o 10_o sabbath_n and_o by_o s._n john_n in_o the_o revelation_n the_o lord_n day_n by_o which_o name_n or_o that_o which_o the_o same_o day_n have_v among_o the_o gentile_n viz._n the_o sunday_n it_o have_v ever_o since_o be_v know_v in_o the_o christian_a world_n but_o i_o will_v leave_v these_o and_o now_o return_v thither_o whence_o for_o the_o answer_n of_o these_o objection_n i_o have_v digress_v and_o have_v see_v the_o nature_n and_o another_o do_v can_v therefore_o be_v say_v to_o sin_n and_o much_o less_o be_v count_v irreligious_a or_o profane_a david_n pray_v &_o give_v thanks_o unto_o god_n at_o midnight_n 62._o &_o so_o do_v that_o good_a which_o either_o they_o or_o we_o by_o they_o be_v partaker_n of_o we_o honour_v they_o only_o as_o his_o instrument_n and_o as_o those_o who_o have_v be_v imitator_n of_o our_o bless_a saviour_n be_v worthy_a pattern_n of_o our_o imitation_n to_o this_o purpose_n we_o find_v the_o church_n of_o smyrna_n answer_v the_o like_a calumny_n raise_v against_o they_o by_o the_o jew_n upon_o occasion_n of_o their_o affection_n which_o they_o express_v towards_o 2._o that_o glorious_a martyr_n polycarpus_n these_o man_n say_v they_o be_v ignorant_a that_o we_o can_v ever_o leave_v christ_n appoint_v for_o any_o saint_n day_n that_o give_v the_o least_o ground_n or_o colour_n to_o this_o scruple_n the_o other_o imputation_n of_o judaism_n which_o they_o tax_v we_o with_o because_o we_o style_v our_o christian_a festival_n holy_a day_n have_v as_o weak_a a_o foundation_n as_o the_o former_a for_o i_o willing_o grant_v they_o what_o they_o allege_v for_o the_o countenance_v of_o this_o objection_n that_o now_o under_o the_o gospel_n the_o difference_n of_o time_n and_o day_n be_v no_o less_o take_v away_o then_o of_o meat_n that_o be_v as_o we_o have_v now_o no_o meat_n that_o be_v unclean_a either_o in_o themselves_o or_o by_o reason_n of_o any_o positive_a precept_n give_v to_o the_o jew_n but_o that_o they_o may_v be_v eat_v with_o thanksgiving_n so_o neither_o be_v there_o any_o day_n or_o time_n which_o in_o itself_o or_o by_o reason_n of_o any_o such_o judaical_a precept_n be_v now_o to_o be_v account_v more_o holy_a than_o other_o all_o this_o be_v evident_a from_o the_o place_n which_o they_o allege_v for_o this_o purpose_n whereupon_o we_o conclude_v that_o none_o of_o the_o jewish_a festival_n not_o the_o sabbath_n itself_o ought_v to_o be_v observe_v by_o christian_n nor_o which_o be_v more_o any_o christian_a festival_n to_o be_v observe_v after_o the_o jewish_a manner_n or_o with_o their_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n and_o this_o may_v just_o tax_v they_o who_o stand_v either_o for_o the_o jewish_a sabbath_n or_o which_o turn_v the_o lord_n day_n into_o a_o sabbath_n exact_v the_o same_o strictness_n of_o observance_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o outward_a ceremonial_a rest_n but_o it_o can_v no_o way_n prejudice_v the_o church_n in_o consecrate_v day_n to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n or_o in_o account_v they_o though_o in_o themselves_o and_o set_v aside_o the_o ordinance_n of_o the_o church_n they_o be_v all_o alike_o 31._o yet_o in_o relation_n to_o the_o duty_n to_o be_v perform_v in_o they_o more_o holy_a than_o sanctify_v the_o day_n in_o which_o they_o be_v perform_v but_o every_o one_o of_o these_o being_n most_o absurd_a i_o conclude_v that_o to_o consecrate_v certain_a day_n beside_o the_o lord_n day_n to_o the_o solemn_a worship_n of_o god_n in_o memory_n of_o his_o special_a blessing_n vouchsafe_v to_o the_o church_n on_o such_o day_n and_o to_o account_v such_o day_n so_o consecrate_v more_o holy_a than_o other_o be_v lawful_a and_o free_a from_o all_o superstition_n and_o judaisme_n and_o however_o that_o they_o who_o will_v fain_o affix_v so_o extraordinary_a holiness_n to_o the_o lord_n day_n shall_v of_o all_o man_n have_v abstain_v from_o this_o last_o imputation_n till_o they_o have_v better_o prove_v the_o immediate_o divine_a

the_o lord_n day_n the_o liberty_n of_o christian_n say_v they_o ought_v to_o be_v spiritual_a and_o not_o in_o carnal_a and_o common_a thing_n and_o therefore_o can_v be_v extend_v to_o patronize_v recreation_n or_o ordinary_a labour_n on_o the_o sunday_n but_o that_o they_o be_v as_o unlawful_a on_o that_o day_n as_o ever_o they_o be_v on_o the_o sabbath_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o christian_a liberty_n as_o it_o respect_v the_o thing_n from_o which_o we_o be_v free_v be_v not_o mere_o spiritual_a but_o extend_v itself_o to_o carnal_a and_o common_a thing_n also_o for_o thereby_o we_o be_v free_v not_o only_o from_o the_o guilt_n and_o condemnation_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o reign_a power_n of_o it_o which_o be_v thing_n spivituall_a but_o also_o from_o the_o servitude_n of_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n which_o among_o other_o respect_n which_o it_o have_v be_v as_o a_o schoolmaster_n or_o tutor_n whereby_o the_o church_n in_o her_o nonage_n or_o infancy_n be_v to_o be_v keep_v under_o the_o element_n of_o the_o world_n as_o the_o apostle_n 3._o call_v they_o that_o be_v tie_v to_o the_o observation_n of_o day_n and_o month_n and_o year_n and_o meat_n and_o drink_n which_o be_v in_o themselves_o indifferent_a be_v yet_o forbid_v the_o church_n of_o those_o time_n that_o their_o bondage_n under_o these_o may_v nourish_v in_o they_o the_o hope_n and_o expectation_n of_o the_o promise_a messiah_n in_o who_o they_o be_v to_o have_v deliverance_n and_o so_o lead_v or_o rather_o drive_v they_o to_o believe_v in_o he_o now_o when_o the_o fullness_n of_o time_n be_v come_v and_o that_o christ_n be_v exhibit_v the_o church_n be_v then_o no_o long_o 4._o under_o age_n be_v not_o subject_a to_o those_o observance_n but_o for_o any_o tie_n of_o that_o law_n of_o moses_n now_o upon_o it_o enjoy_v the_o free_a use_n and_o exercise_v of_o these_o thing_n as_o indifferent_a as_o then_o there_o be_v many_o thing_n which_o in_o themselves_o and_o to_o we_o now_o be_v indifferent_a prohibit_v to_o the_o jew_n so_o as_o they_o may_v not_o eat_v of_o all_o meat_n though_o otherwise_o wholesome_a they_o may_v not_o wear_v all_o kind_n of_o garment_n though_o useful_a and_o profitable_a etc._n etc._n so_o there_o be_v some_o work_n in_o themselves_o not_o sinful_a nor_o at_o other_o time_n unlawful_a prohibit_v to_o be_v do_v at_o some_o special_a time_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o peculiar_a observance_n then_o due_a to_o those_o time_n which_o now_o when_o those_o time_n cease_v to_o be_v observe_v can_v by_o no_o mean_n be_v account_v sinful_a or_o unlawful_a grant_v therefore_o that_o ordinary_a labour_n and_o all_o bodily_a recreation_n be_v on_o the_o sabbath_n unlawful_a yet_o be_v in_o themselves_o not_o sinful_a and_o so_o under_o the_o gospel_n indifferent_a they_o can_v be_v so_o upon_o our_o sunday_n i_o answer_v further_o that_o i_o know_v no_o reason_n why_o honest_a recreation_n moderate_a feast_n and_o such_o
