mundane_a or_o secular_a prince_n as_o they_o term_v they_o ought_v not_o to_o deal_v in_o matter_n ecclesiastical_a but_o only_o in_o matter_n politic_a but_o this_o example_n and_o many_o other_o example_n of_o david_n solomon_n of_o josophat_n of_o josias_n and_o likewise_o many_o say_n of_o holy_a scripture_n do_v testify_v that_o prince_n ought_v special_o to_o have_v a_o care_n of_o matter_n ecclesiastical_a it_o be_v not_o require_v at_o their_o hand_n to_o preach_v but_o it_o be_v require_v at_o their_o hand_n to_o appoint_v preacher_n and_o to_o see_v that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v preach_v sincere_o for_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o prince_n that_o they_o themselves_o be_v honest_a godly_a and_o virtuous_a but_o they_o ought_v to_o labour_n and_o to_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_n that_o their_o subject_n may_v also_o be_v honest_a godly_a and_o virtuous_a for_o as_o the_o good_a man_n of_o the_o house_n have_v not_o do_v his_o duty_n if_o he_o only_o here_o sermon_n and_o lead_v a_o godly_a life_n but_o must_v also_o seek_v to_o train_v up_o his_o family_n in_o true_a godliness_n and_o virtue_n even_o so_o king_n and_o prince_n have_v not_o sufficient_o discharge_v their_o duty_n in_o direct_v their_o own_o footstep_n aright_o unless_o they_o have_v a_o far_a regard_n to_o the_o path_n of_o their_o subject_n but_o now_o let_v we_o see_v by_o the_o text_n what_o thing_n be_v here_o to_o be_v note_v 1_o first_o the_o king_n with_o his_o citizen_n be_v clothe_v in_o sackcloth_n &_o sit_v in_o the_o dust_n while_o they_o go_v about_o to_o repent_v they_o of_o their_o sin_n but_o what_o be_v those_o work_v a_o satisfaction_n for_o sin_n be_v sackcloth_n and_o ash_n of_o such_o force_n before_o god_n that_o he_o respect_v they_o and_o for_o they_o turn_v from_o his_o wrath_n and_o punishment_n nothing_o less_o true_o for_o otherwise_o it_o be_v but_o vain_a that_o god_n have_v promise_v his_o son_n from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n shall_v not_o put_v on_o sackcloth_n but_o that_o he_o shall_v suffer_v death_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o sit_v in_o the_o dust_n but_o that_o he_o shall_v hang_v on_o the_o cross_n what_o be_v mean_v then_o by_o the_o sackcloth_n and_o dust_n which_o the_o ninivete_v use_v they_o be_v not_o thing_n able_a to_o pacify_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n but_o they_o be_v true_a sign_n of_o confession_n of_o sin_n and_o argument_n of_o contrition_n which_o be_v have_v for_o sin_n in_o the_o king_n the_o throne_n be_v a_o sign_n of_o majesty_n in_o the_o citizen_n the_o high_a and_o precious_a seat_n in_o the_o temple_n be_v sign_n of_o dignity_n but_o now_o the_o king_n place_v not_o himself_o public_o in_o his_o kingly_a throne_n but_o sit_v with_o his_o citizen_n in_o the_o dust_n of_o the_o earth_n or_o in_o base_a and_o uncomely_a seat_n to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v open_o declare_v themselves_o for_o their_o sin_n to_o be_v unworthy_a before_o god_n of_o their_o majesty_n and_o dignity_n and_o to_o have_v deserve_v death_n and_o destruction_n the_o king_n and_o his_o citizen_n have_v their_o sumptuous_a and_o precious_a apparel_n on_o festival_n day_n at_o marriage_n and_o at_o other_o solemn_a meeting_n with_o the_o which_o they_o do_v beautify_v themselves_o and_o excel_v other_o man_n but_o now_o they_o put_v on_o vile_a and_o base_a apparel_n to_o the_o end_n there_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v no_o difference_n between_o the_o king_n and_o his_o magistrate_n and_o other_o common_a people_n and_o also_o to_o declare_v that_o they_o think_v themselves_o unworthy_a of_o their_o bodily_a apparel_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o sin_n therefore_o sackcloth_n and_o ash_n be_v not_o satisfaction_n for_o sin_n but_o they_o be_v only_a argument_n of_o the_o acknowledge_v and_o sum_n of_o sacred_a scripture_n be_v so_o great_a also_o be_v the_o certainty_n and_o truth_n of_o this_o miracle_n furthermore_o christ_n himself_o the_o son_n of_o god_n our_o lord_n commend_v unto_o we_o this_o miracle_n by_o name_n say_v as_o ionas_n be_v in_o the_o whale_n belly_n three_o day_n and_o three_o night_n so_o must_v the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v etc_n etc_n even_o as_o the_o same_o at_o a_o sudden_a by_o fire_n or_o else_o to_o bring_v in_o the_o enemy_n by_o night_n but_o the_o godly_a king_n of_o the_o ninivete_n suspect_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o ionas_n but_o receive_v he_o as_o a_o true_a prophet_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o acknowledge_v his_o sermon_n for_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o we_o may_v not_o think_v that_o this_o king_n be_v so_o simple_a so_o rash_a or_o so_o mad_a that_o he_o will_v unadvised_o believe_v the_o word_n of_o this_o prophet_n and_o although_o in_o hear_v sermon_n we_o must_v special_o note_v not_o who_o speak_v but_o what_o be_v speak_v yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o great_a matter_n and_o thing_n pertain_v to_o salvation_n we_o must_v not_o rash_o credit_v every_o stranger_n which_o preach_v new_a thing_n without_o certain_a and_o manifest_a testimony_n prove_v say_v saint_n paul_n all_o thing_n 5._o and_o keep_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o saint_n john_n say_v 3._o believe_v not_o every_o spirit_n but_o to_o the_o citizen_n of_o ninive_n but_o they_o know_v he_o to_o be_v the_o true_a prophet_n of_o the_o lord_n because_o his_o fame_n be_v spread_v even_o to_o ninive_n when_o as_o by_o his_o prophecy_n the_o kingdom_n of_o israel_n be_v restore_v by_o jeroboam_n 14._o as_o it_o be_v write_v in_o the_o book_n of_o king_n furthermore_o the_o godly_a king_n know_v that_o god_n will_v not_o the_o prophet_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o perceive_v how_o all_o thing_n be_v corrupt_a in_o the_o city_n with_o wicked_a manner_n he_o worthy_o receive_v the_o sermon_n of_o ionas_n as_o a_o divine_a oracle_n by_o the_o which_o example_n we_o be_v teach_v not_o to_o receive_v the_o doctrine_n of_o every_o one_o by_o and_o by_o which_o boast_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o prophet_n as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o not_o to_o allow_v by_o and_o by_o the_o prophecy_n of_o every_o one_o which_o say_v that_o he_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o this_o be_v a_o great_a token_n of_o lightness_n to_o believe_v every_o busy_a body_n but_o after_o that_o we_o know_v that_o the_o word_n set_v forth_o and_o expound_v unto_o we_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o deed_n than_o we_o must_v believe_v the_o same_o without_o all_o doubt_n or_o delay_n that_o we_o may_v obtain_v and_o enjoy_v the_o end_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v as_o say_v saint_n peter_n the_o salvation_n of_o our_o soul_n 2_o second_o this_o king_n when_o he_o hear_v that_o ninive_n for_o sin_n shall_v be_v overthrow_v he_o prefer_v not_o himself_o before_o his_o citizen_n he_o judge_v not_o himself_o to_o wrath_n against_o sin_n not_o to_o think_v that_o they_o by_o the_o privilege_n of_o their_o majesty_n be_v just_a before_o god_n and_o that_o the_o rude_a and_o rascal_n sort_n be_v only_o wicked_a and_o unjust_a before_o he_o no_o rather_o they_o be_v teach_v to_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v comprehend_v among_o the_o common_a sort_n of_o man_n of_o who_o it_o be_v say_v every_o man_n be_v custom_n the_o primitive_a church_n also_o imitate_v after_o the_o gospel_n be_v reveal_v and_o it_o be_v lawful_a as_o yet_o in_o extreme_a peril_n to_o imitate_v the_o same_o so_o that_o it_o be_v not_o do_v hypocritical_o papistical_o and_o monastical_o but_o godly_a virtuous_o and_o christianly_a the_o papist_n and_o monk_n use_v these_o work_n to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v thereby_o merit_v remission_n of_o their_o sin_n this_o be_v a_o detestable_a opinion_n and_o far_o from_o true_a repentance_n but_o we_o must_v use_v these_o right_n and_o custom_n to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v declare_v ourselves_o to_o be_v sinner_n and_o to_o have_v deserve_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o that_o we_o call_v now_o upon_o the_o lord_n for_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n 4_o this_o be_v also_o contain_v in_o the_o king_n commandment_n let_v every_o man_n turn_n from_o his_o evil_a way_n and_o from_o the_o wickedness_n which_o he_o have_v in_o hand_n this_o be_v a_o sermon_n of_o manner_n of_o virtue_n this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o king_n commandment_n when_o he_o will_v every_o man_n to_o turn_v from_o his_o wicked_a way_n and_o this_o be_v true_a repentance_n which_o be_v always_o require_v of_o us._n 5_o furthermore_o in_o the_o commandment_n or_o proclamation_n of_o the_o king_n this_o be_v also_o add_v who_o can_v tell_v whether_o god_n will_v turn_v and_o repent_v and_o cease_v from_o his_o fierce_a wrath_n that_o we_o perish_v not_o what_o shall_v we_o say_v to_o this_o do_v the_o king_n doubt_v of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n be_v we_o not_o command_v certain_o to_o believe_v and_o without_o doubt_v to_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n for_o christ_n sake_n do_v forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n and_o to_o speak_v not_o simp_o of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n when_o he_o say_v who_o can_v tell_v whether_o god_n will_v turn_v and_o repent_v and_o cease_v from_o his_o fierce_a wrath_n and_o so_o forth_o but_o include_v the_o remission_n of_o punishment_n which_o ionas_n prophesy_v shall_v come_v for_o in_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n there_o be_v common_o a_o double_a remission_n as_o the_o remission_n of_o fault_n and_o the_o remission_n of_o punishment_n by_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n the_o remission_n of_o fault_n be_v most_o certain_a and_o the_o remission_n of_o punishment_n also_o for_o christ_n be_v promise_v unto_o the_o elder_n &_o offer_v unto_o we_o to_o take_v away_o our_o sin_n &_o to_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o eternal_a torment_n of_o hell_n fire_n wherefore_o we_o must_v never_o doubt_v of_o this_o remission_n and_o if_o any_o do_v doubt_n he_o reprove_v christ_n and_o his_o gospel_n of_o a_o lie_n but_o beside_o the_o fault_n and_o eternal_a punishment_n the_o law_n of_o god_n threaten_v to_o sinner_n temporal_a and_o extern_a punishment_n also_o as_o in_o this_o place_n the_o ninivet_n have_v deserve_v for_o their_o sin_n eternal_a punishment_n but_o the_o prophet_n threaten_v unto_o they_o also_o external_a and_o worldly_a punishment_n which_o shall_v happen_v unto_o they_o and_o to_o their_o city_n within_o forty_o day_n after_o neither_o do_v he_o add_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o this_o external_a punishment_n if_o so_o be_v they_o shall_v be_v convert_v wherefore_o the_o king_n although_o he_o can_v certain_o determine_v and_o appoint_v that_o if_o they_o do_v certain_o repent_v their_o sin_n shall_v be_v remit_v and_o they_o deliver_v from_o eternal_a punishment_n yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o can_v not_o certain_o affirm_v or_o say_v whether_o god_n will_v forgive_v for_o their_o repentance_n and_o conversion_n the_o external_a and_o worldly_a punishment_n he_o command_v the_o people_n therefore_o to_o hope_v well_o and_o to_o repent_v they_o true_o because_o he_o be_v sure_a that_o their_o sin_n shall_v be_v forgive_v and_o they_o deliver_v from_o hell_n think_v also_o that_o it_o may_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o by_o the_o mere_a free_a and_o unpromise_v mercy_n of_o god_n they_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o the_o overthrow_n and_o destruction_n of_o the_o city_n so_o david_n know_v that_o god_n have_v forgive_v he_o his_o sin_n and_o deliver_v he_o from_o hell_n but_o he_o know_v not_o whether_o he_o shall_v return_v to_o his_o kingdom_n therefore_o he_o say_v if_o i_o shall_v find_v favour_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o lord_n he_o will_v bring_v i_o again_o and_o show_v i_o both_o it_o and_o the_o tabernacle_n thereof_o but_o and_o if_o the_o lord_n say_v thus_o 15._o i_o have_v no_o lust_n way_n he_o repent_v on_o the_o evil_a which_o he_o say_v he_o will_v do_v unto_o they_o and_o do_v it_o not_o this_o place_n the_o hypocrite_n do_v abuse_v to_o defend_v the_o merit_n of_o humane_a righteousness_n and_o do_v affirm_v that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n may_v be_v pacify_v and_o that_o sin_n may_v be_v forgive_v for_o such_o work_n as_o be_v before_o mention_v as_o by_o fast_v put_v on_o of_o sackcloth_n and_o sit_v in_o dust_n but_o they_o great_o err_v and_o be_v deceive_v for_o first_o of_o all_o the_o whole_a end_n and_o scope_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o acknowledge_v and_o comprehend_v by_o faith_n the_o pacify_v therefore_o of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o the_o satisfaction_n for_o sin_n before_o god_o must_v not_o be_v attribute_v to_o any_o of_o man_n merit_n or_o desert_n but_o to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n furthermore_o we_o have_v show_v before_o that_o fast_v and_o sackcloth_n of_o themselves_o be_v work_n
