a_o letter_n send_v to_o the_o right_n honourable_a the_o lord_n mayor_n of_o the_o city_n of_o london_n by_o lieutenant_n colonel_n kiffen_n captain_n gosfright_n captain_n hewl_v and_o lieutenant_n lome_n touch_v the_o seize_n of_o their_o person_n and_o search_v their_o house_n for_o arm_n and_o also_o show_v the_o forgery_n and_o falsehood_n of_o a_o scandalous_a pamphlet_n entitle_v a_o manifesto_n and_o declaration_n of_o the_o anabaptist_n and_o other_o congregational_a church_n etc._n etc._n publish_v febr._n 28._o 1659._o may_v it_o please_v your_o lordship_n the_o very_a much_o unexpected_a undeserved_a and_o illegal_a usage_n which_o we_o late_o find_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o some_o officer_n and_o soldier_n they_o declare_v for_o just_a liberty_n have_v enforce_v we_o to_o make_v this_o application_n to_o your_o lordship_n as_o the_o patron_n of_o this_o city_n from_o who_o we_o hope_v we_o may_v just_o expect_v common_a freedom_n and_o safety_n with_o other_o the_o citizen_n thereof_o in_o order_n whereunto_o we_o crave_v leave_v to_o acquaint_v your_o lordship_n that_o the_o other_o night_n about_o midnight_n several_a party_n of_o soldier_n come_v to_o our_o dwelling_n who_o without_o any_o warrant_n from_o the_o parliament_n council_n of_o state_n your_o lordship_n the_o magistrate_n of_o this_o city_n or_o any_o other_o civil_a authority_n a_o precedent_n not_o to_o be_v parallel_v that_o we_o know_v of_o in_o the_o city_n in_o all_o our_o late_a sad_a intestine_a war_n demand_v admission_n and_o to_o the_o great_a affrightment_n and_o astonishment_n of_o our_o wife_n child_n with_o other_o relation_n apprehend_v our_o prrson_n be_v quiet_a in_o our_o habitation_n and_o some_o of_o we_o sick_a in_o our_o bed_n search_v our_o house_n carry_v and_o detain_v our_o person_n as_o prisoner_n at_o the_o guard_n at_o paul_n till_o that_o day_n noon_n and_o then_o no_o otherwise_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v remove_v from_o thence_o but_o as_o be_v still_o under_o confinement_n and_o to_o return_v at_o their_o pleasure_n give_v we_o to_o no_o account_n of_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o action_n but_o say_v they_o have_v order_n from_o general_n monck_n which_o they_o refuse_v to_o let_v we_o read_v we_o desire_v to_o know_v our_o accuser_n or_o accusation_n but_o can_v not_o understand_v the_o least_o crime_n lay_v to_o our_o charge_n be_v thus_o use_v as_o evil_a doer_n expose_v to_o scorn_n and_o reproach_n hinder_v in_o our_o calling_n and_o prejudice_v in_o our_o credit_n we_o can_v be_v so_o injurious_a to_o ourselves_o with_o other_o citizen_n as_o to_o suffer_v this_o wrong_n without_o endeavour_v our_o just_a vindication_n and_o reparation_n we_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o conclude_v that_o this_o have_v befall_v we_o in_o reference_n to_o our_o judgement_n and_o practice_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n which_o we_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o own_v as_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n reveal_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n as_o also_o within_o the_o liberty_n that_o the_o general_n himself_o have_v hold_v forth_o to_o be_v enjoy_v by_o we_o equal_o with_o other_o person_n true_o fear_v god_n why_o then_o shall_v we_o thus_o suffer_v have_v to_o our_o utmost_a in_o all_o our_o capacity_n endeavour_v the_o common_a peace_n and_o welfare_n of_o this_o city_n and_o nation_n and_o nothing_o to_o the_o contrary_a sure_o my_o lord_n as_o the_o precedent_n itself_o be_v of_o most_o dangerous_a consequence_n to_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o this_o place_n so_o will_v it_o sound_v very_o harsh_a in_o the_o ear_n of_o other_o people_n in_o the_o nation_n who_o may_v reckon_v themselves_o expose_v to_o the_o like_a usage_n if_o this_o and_o such_o like_a action_n pass_v without_o due_a observation_n and_o therefore_o for_o their_o sake_n as_o our_o own_o we_o can_v be_v altogether_o silent_a beside_o that_o even_o now_o when_o most_o man_n be_v seek_v for_o settlement_n such_o undertaking_n how_o great_o they_o tend_v to_o dissettle_v man_n mind_n and_o fill_v the_o land_n with_o disturbance_n and_o distraction_n we_o leave_v to_o your_o lordship_n to_o judge_v my_o lord_n we_o sue_v to_o your_o lordship_n for_o nothing_o but_o that_o right_a may_v be_v do_v we_o if_o we_o have_v do_v any_o thing_n contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o nation_n or_o the_o city_n we_o refuse_v not_o but_o seek_v a_o legal_a trial_n but_o if_o otherwise_o as_o indeed_o we_o be_v not_o conscious_a to_o ourselves_o that_o we_o have_v in_o the_o least_o offend_v against_o this_o city_n or_o our_o ruler_n we_o do_v claim_v our_o right_n and_o humble_o conceive_v your_o lordship_n engage_v to_o endeavour_v that_o we_o may_v be_v set_v at_o liberty_n from_o our_o confinement_n but_o if_o your_o lordship_n shall_v think_v it_o fit_a and_o requisite_a that_o application_n be_v in_o this_o case_n make_v to_o the_o parliament_n or_o council_n of_o state_n we_o then_o humble_o pray_v that_o we_o be_v member_n of_o this_o city_n your_o lordship_n will_v please_v to_o move_v for_o present_a redress_n in_o this_o our_o grievance_n and_o future_a protection_n and_o security_n with_o other_o our_o neighbour_n in_o out_o habitation_n my_o lord_n the_o day_n follow_v they_o seach_v our_o house_n for_o arm_n there_o be_v report_n of_o great_a commonwealth_n both_o in_o church_n and_o state_n touch_v which_o although_o we_o doubt_v not_o but_o all_o sober_a mind_a people_n will_v perceive_v it_o to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v forge_v false_a and_o scandalous_a and_o do_v by_o profane_a and_o luxuriant_a incendiary_n who_o make_v lie_v their_o refuge_n and_o under_o falsehood_n hide_v themselves_o design_v to_o foment_n distraction_n and_o
