the_o case_n of_o mr._n john_n griffith_n minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o now_o prisoner_n in_o newgate_n be_v a_o true_a and_o impartial_a account_n of_o what_o he_o speak_v at_o the_o sessions-house_n in_o the_o old_a bailey_n on_o the_o 18_o day_n of_o this_o instant_a april_n 1683._o before_o the_o lord-chief-justice_n saunders_n and_o three_o judge_n more_o the_o lord_n mayor_n recorder_n and_o several_a alderman_n of_o the_o city_n of_o london_n on_o the_o day_n and_o year_n abovesaid_a about_o four_o in_o the_o afternoon_n mr._n bampfield_n and_o myself_o be_v send_v for_o by_o the_o court_n and_o soon_o after_o we_o come_v we_o be_v both_o bring_v to_o the_o inward_a bar._n mr._n bampfield_n be_v first_o require_v to_o take_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n it_o be_v again_o tender_v he_o according_a to_o the_o statute_n in_o the_o three_o of_o king_n james_n after_o some_o discourse_n between_o the_o judge_n and_o the_o recorder_n have_v with_o mr._n bampfield_n he_o refuse_v to_o swear_v they_o make_v a_o end_n for_o that_o time_n with_o he_o the_o clerk_n of_o the_o peace_n i_o take_v he_o to_o be_v say_v unto_o i_o take_v off_o your_o glove_n i_o ask_v he_o what_o to_o do_v he_o answer_v to_o lay_v your_o hand_n on_o the_o book_n which_o book_n he_o have_v in_o his_o hand_n and_o hold_v it_o out_o unto_o i_o i_o than_o speak_v with_o a_o loud_a voice_n and_o say_v my_o lord_n i_o hope_v you_o will_v give_v i_o the_o liberty_n to_o speak_v for_o myself_o in_o my_o own_o defence_n one_o of_o the_o judge_n reply_v that_o my_o friend_n meaning_n mr._n bampfield_n have_v speak_v for_o i_o or_o to_o that_o effect_n i_o say_v again_o that_o i_o desire_v to_o speak_v for_o myself_o for_o i_o have_v other_o thing_n to_o offer_v as_o my_o reason_n why_o i_o can_v not_o take_v that_o oath_n have_v liberty_n grant_v as_o i_o take_v it_o from_o their_o silence_n i_o with_o a_o audible_a voice_n say_v unto_o they_o i_o be_o in_o the_o scripture_n command_v when_o i_o take_v a_o oath_n to_o swear_v in_o truth_n in_o judgement_n and_o in_o righteousness_n unto_o which_o the_o church_n of_o england_n do_v agree_v it_o be_v one_o article_n of_o their_o faith_n that_o he_o that_o take_v a_o oath_n be_v require_v of_o the_o magistrate_n aught_o to_o swear_v so_o he_o do_v it_o in_o truth_n in_o righteousness_n and_o in_o judgement_n see_v article_n 39_o of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n now_o for_o i_o to_o swear_v as_o my_o duty_n be_v according_a to_o the_o scripture_n and_o as_o the_o church_n of_o england_n direct_v i_o can_v shall_v i_o take_v this_o oath_n because_o i_o can_v know_v but_o must_v be_v ignorant_a of_o what_o i_o bound_v my_o soul_n to_o perform_v and_o then_o it_o be_v impossible_a i_o shall_v swear_v in_o truth_n in_o judgement_n and_o in_o righteousness_n i_o can_v know_v but_o must_v be_v ignorant_a both_o of_o what_o hereafter_o by_o law_n i_o may_v be_v require_v to_o do_v and_o also_o to_o who_o i_o swear_v to_o be_v obedient_a for_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a i_o shall_v foresee_v what_o law_n may_v hereafter_o be_v make_v and_o i_o do_v not_o only_o bind_v my_o soul_n to_o obey_v the_o king_n that_o now_o be_v but_o his_o heir_n and_o successor_n also_o and_o i_o know_v not_o what_o his_o successor_n may_v be_v for_o aught_o i_o know_v he_o may_v be_v a_o popish_a succesfor_n or_o a_o papist_n and_o i_o can_v swear_v to_o obey_v law_n not_o yet_o in_o be_v nor_o to_o be_v obedient_a to_o a_o popish_a successor_n therefore_o i_o can_v take_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n upon_o which_o word_n there_o be_v a_o hum_n in_o the_o court_n which_o be_v cease_v after_o a_o little_a pause_n one_o of_o the_o judge_n make_v this_o short_a reply_n i_o say_v he_o do_v the_o stick_n lie_v there_o i_o than_o go_v on_o and_o say_v i_o can_v conform_v to_o the_o church_n of_o england_n shall_v i_o take_v this_o oath_n i_o swear_v to_o conform_v for_o i_o be_o bind_v by_o a_o oath_n to_o obey_v all_o the_o king_n law_n as_o much_o those_o law_n which_o respect_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n as_o those_o relate_n to_o civil_a government_n and_o then_o i_o be_o swear_v to_o hear_v common_a prayer_n once_o a_o month_n here_o one_o of_o the_o judge_n say_v so_o you_o be_v and_o to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n with_o the_o church_n of_o england_n as_o oft_o as_o the_o law_n require_v yea_o and_o to_o conform_v to_o all_o the_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n of_o the_o say_a church_n to_o this_o it_o be_v answer_v so_o you_o be_v and_o not_o to_o frequent_v private_a meeting_n any_o more_o for_o there_o be_v law_n that_o forbid_v it_o it_o be_v again_o answer_v so_o you_o be_v therefore_o i_o can_v take_v this_o oath_n i_o than_o pray_v the_o judge_n to_o give_v i_o all_o their_o opinion_n whether_o it_o be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v or_o not_o they_o answer_v with_o one_o consent_n as_o one_o man_n that_o it_o be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v viz._n that_o i_o do_v in_o take_v the_o oath_n swear_v to_o obey_v all_o the_o king_n law_n without_o exception_n then_o i_o return_v they_o thanks_o that_o they_o be_v please_v to_o give_v i_o their_o opinion_n and_o judgement_n in_o the_o case_n and_o withal_o add_v these_o word_n i_o be_o well_o satisfy_v and_o settle_v in_o my_o religion_n and_o the_o more_o confirm_v by_o what_o you_o have_v say_v and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o do_v with_o i_o what_o you_o please_v come_v life_n come_v death_n the_o lord_n assist_v i_o i_o will_v never_o take_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n then_o i_o desire_v to_o speak_v a_o few_o word_n more_o which_o be_v not_o deny_v i_o say_v be_v it_o know_v unto_o you_o that_o i_o do_v not_o refuse_v to_o take_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n in_o any_o dislike_n i_o have_v of_o any_o thing_n contain_v therein_o against_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o pope_n or_o the_o see_v of_o rome_n but_o do_v in_o all_o point_n therein_o with_o you_o agree_v and_o further_o i_o do_v declare_v that_o i_o believe_v the_o pope_n have_v no_o power_n nor_o authority_n over_o the_o king_n person_n nor_o his_o government_n no_o nor_o over_o the_o mean_a subject_n in_o his_o kingdom_n and_o do_v yet_o further_o declare_v that_o i_o believe_v in_o my_o conscience_n popery_n to_o be_v idolatrous_a damnable_a and_o devilish_a i_o be_v then_o have_v back_o again_o to_o the_o press-yard_n where_o i_o remain_v the_o lord_n prisoner_n and_o be_o ready_o further_a to_o bear_v my_o testimony_n for_o he_o against_o anti-christ_n the_o pope_n and_o see_v of_o rome_n and_o for_o his_o holy_a word_n the_o purity_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o ordinance_n thereof_o against_o popish_a darkness_n filthy_a idolatry_n fornication_n blasphemy_n and_o abomination_n and_o all_o tradition_n of_o man_n as_o one_o make_v willing_a through_o the_o free_a mercy_n and_o rich_a grace_n of_o god_n my_o heavenly_a father_n to_o forsake_v all_o for_o christ_n who_o have_v love_v i_o and_o give_v himself_o for_o i_o not_o count_v my_o life_n dear_a to_o myself_o so_o i_o may_v finish_v my_o course_n with_o joy_n and_o the_o ministry_n i_o have_v receive_v of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n to_o testify_v the_o gospel_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n thus_o have_v i_o give_v a_o account_n of_o what_o i_o speak_v and_o be_v say_v to_o i_o to_o the_o very_o best_a of_o my_o memory_n though_o it_o may_v be_v not_o word_n for_o word_n yet_o for_o substance_n of_o what_o be_v speak_v it_o be_v true_a john_n griffith_z thou_o shall_v not_o forswear_v thyself_o but_o shall_v perform_v unto_o the_o lord_n
